(For the Hardcore ELO Fan)
『I saw ELO's "Out of the Blue" concert when it came to the Oakland Coliseum Arena many years ago. It was one of the best concert performances I have ever seen. This DVD, however, was a disappointment to this ELO fan. The concert footage is excusable given the era, but the audio is not. I'd hope that in the future when someone brings old concert footage to DVD, they put some work into enhancing the audio, if needed. If you're buying this DVD for the "Out of the Blue" concert footage alone, you may be disappointed as I was. If for the additional "Discovery" videos (good audio), then you won't be totally disappointed.』

(Interesting...)
『Well, this dvd has completed my elo collection. I have all their albums and both concert dvds. Having listened to their albums over the last 15 or so years, I always imagined ELO would do an amazing concert.

Pros
- It's good to see some elo footage from the late 70's and the stage spectacle that everyone talks about. I wasn't born until the 80's, so never saw ELO live. However I did see ELO ptII in 1997 and they were amazing, wish they would come back to Australia.

Cons
- They lip-synched on many of the songs
- Sound quality is poor
- Video quality is average, the effects are terrible. However, it was probably acceptable back in the 70s.

Like another reviewer said, the Zoom dvd is much better. Neither this nor Zoom are that watchable. Jeff isn't a very interesting performer. Unless you're a big fan, don't bother with this dvd, get Zoom instead.』

(Disappointing)
『I've been a fan of ELO for many years now. Before I saw this DVD, this was probably my favorite band, after the Beatles. Not anymore. WHAT is with "Standing in the Rain"? They lip-synched it! Does Jeff Lynne think we're fools? Or was the sound quality (which is poor even on the truley live pieces) that bad that they had to get the album version for audio? I've seen ELO Part II, WITHOUT JEFF LYNNE, DO THIS SONG COMPLETEY LIVE, so WHY COULDN'T JEFF? "Standing in the Rain" is not the only song they do this to. If you listen very closely to the audio, you will hear more strings than you see. The guys are playing, but you don't hear them, you hear a track that was synched up to the performance. If I was one of those guys, I would be pissed, unless the sound THAT poor. Heck, the strings have the best sound quality, just listening to the other insturments, it wouldn't suprise me if it was that bad. On other songs, you hear a lead guitar when Jeff is playing rhythm. Oops! I'm kind of suprised they got away with it. All apologies to Ashley Simpson. I can't believe Jeff Lynne would sink so low. For this, 1 star.

Next, the visual effects are very cheesey.I guess for the late '70's they would have been good, but by today's standards, they're very cheesey. Two stars.

I can't give halves, but if I could, I would give 1 1/2 stars.

If you want to see a good ELO DVD, it doesn't really exist. After watching this, you do see how important Kelly Groucutt really was. He sings on evey song. On some he sings harmony with Jeff from start to finish; on others, Jeff and Kelly take turns on lead vocals: Jeff sings one verse, Kelly sings the next. If anything good came of this DVD, for me it was a deep appreciation for Kelly Groucutt and his contributions to ELO. Zoom is the best DVD for live ELO, but Kelly isn't there and the violin parts are done on guitar (Marc Mann does a wonderful job, by the way, but its just not the same). I would give Zoom (the DVD)3 stars. It's not bad, but its not great. The best DVD with Jeff Lynne is "the Concert for George". It's AWESOME and Jeff does a good job.
If you wan't anything good that's live, but has ELO music, you have to go with ELO Part II. There is no Jeff Lynne, but along with that there is no lip-synching and the strings are real. Besides, Kelly Groucutt and Eric Troyer both do a good job on Jeff's numbers. And, more importantly, the sound quality is GREAT. Try "One Night-Live in Australia" or "the Greatest Hits Live:Encore Collection". ELO Part II has a DVD (of the Australian concert if I'm not mistaken), but I have yet to see it. If you want good sound quality, which is the most important thing right?, you're gonna have to go with ELO Part II, not ELO.』

(Performance great-sound and quality makes it only 4 stars)
『Jeff Lynne is fabulous as always, but voice hindered a bit by back up vocals in band. This is nice to have in your collection for ELO/classic rock fans. The sound and picture need some remastering, but this is vintage footage w/great performance. I highly recommend the Zoom DVD between the two, simply because it's the greatest concert I've ever seen on DVD or in person, but this "Out of the Blue" DVD does give you a couple of different songs than that one like "Sweet Talkin' Woman", which sounded great. If you want to buy one, buy Zoom DVD, if you like ELO more than a little, buy both. You will be very pleased.』

(This is excellence, a reminder of QUALITY AND DEDICATION)
『First of all, I cannot blindfold myself and ignore the comments that this "IT" individual left for this item and band below. He says he saw them live. PLEASE, If you are an idiot, do not bother us with your pitiful thoughts, sarcastic cracks and narrowminded views, besides stepping on PROFOUND CONTRADICTION!. If YOU saw them live and they were your "High School LOVE", why are you thrashing the band, the sound and the wardrobe now!!!!
AN OBJECTIVE REVIEW, WITHOUT NONSENSE;
I discovered this band back in 1977. They were in a progression path and road to PERFECTION in the Symphonic Rock genre. They had a unique style without comparison to the rest of bands of the era. The "New World Record" album opened a new age of sound, and they were the masters. For E.L.O. connoisseurs, you will concur they had a string of 5 amazing heaven sent releases, MASTERPIECES after that LP, including Xanadu. This DVD shows you the PROFESSIONALISM, ART, DEDICATION, FEELING and most of all, ----PASSION ---- that was burned on and off stage making music back then, that you DO NOT SEE now a days. For Nostalgics like me, it's a reminder of ALL we have LOST and YEARN, and for Newcomers, IT IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED IN ALL ASPECTS. It also includes The Videos from the Discovery album, a FABULOUS COLLECTION OF FANTASTIC SONGS! Considering the year it was recorded, the picture and sound are GOOD in the LIVE show, and very good in the Discovery videos. This DVD is a MUST and a 100+ for any E.L.O. fan out there. It even has Tony Curtis acting as MC. IT IS THE CLOSEST TO HEAVEN YOU'LL EVER GET WITH THIS GENRE. THIS IS PURE EXCELLENCE AND QUALITY IN MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED.』

『The Seventies was the decade when rock became show business. And nobody put on a better show than the Electric Light Orchestra. This double feature highlights both sides of ELO, with their space-age live show in the "Out of the Blue Tour: Live at Wembley" (1978, 62 min.), with no less than nine Top Thirty hits, and the conceptual music videos of "Electric Light Orchestra: Discovery" (1979, 39 min.). When "Star Wars" met Chuck Berry, the result had to be seen to be believed! Songs: "Live" - Standing in the Rain, Night in the City, Turn to Stone, Tightrope, Telephone Line, Rockaria!, Wild West Hero, Showdown, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, Do Ya, Livin' Thing, Roll Over Beethoven; "Discovery" - Shine a Little Love, Confusion, Need Her Love, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Last Train to London, Midnight Blue, On the Run, Wishing, Don't Bring Me Down.』

(George Strait New Years Eve Concert)
『This George Strait concert was recorded new years eve 1986 and the music is excellent, his band The Ace In The Hole was phenomenal that night as they are for every performance. George Strait was in great voice and he smiled and intertained as best as any singer could or ever would. As it was pointed out by another, he had lost his daughter that year. And if you've seen that man perform before you'll notice there is not the usual spark in his eyes. I'm sure his heart was breaking the entire time, longing to face the new year with his daughter still in his arms. But even so, his performance was classic Strait, energy in the swing tunes and breaking those women hearts as he sang the romantic ballads. There has been and always will be just one George Strait.』

(what's up with the 1959?)
『I just searched for this tape on Amazon, and for some unknown reason it said it came out in 1959. That is so wrong, it came out in 1997..the poor guy just lost his daughter and he jumped on stage and did a concert that New Years Eve. The part that brought me to tears was at the end when Norma jumped on the stage to hug him happy New Years. It must've been devastating to him. But it was so nice after all these years to watch it again..buy this VHS and see what George is all about. You won't be sorry! He will mesmorize you!』

(George Strait is Awesome)
『Anything by George Strait deserves two thumbs up. He is my favorite artist of all time. I went to a concert of his a couple of years back and it was phenomenal.』

(Great George Strait video.)
『This is from 1986 New Years Eve in Dallas Texas. George Strait does his songs with alot of class and style and very good video. Some interesting things on this video like the countdown to 1987 it shows just how old this video is. A wild 80's country crowd jumping with excitement with mullet haircuts and bad 80's perm hairstyles. And of course George belting great stuff like Amarillo by morning, Dance time in Texas, and The Fireman and many others. This is the later version of this video they kind of fixed some things like adding some bonus footage about his albums at the beginning and a Check yes or no video at the end. Really good video though great concert from the 80's.』

(Tasty and Raw.....the best combination for a live Blues show (s))
『I took a gamble and bought this...and LOVE it! Sue is a very cool fingerstyle blues player...a bit like Albert Collins but very unique as well.
Unlike others I like her voice...I think its a nice counterpoint to the heavier guitar to have a bit young , thinner voice. The standard Blues Belter boisterously bellowing just wears me out so I was relieved that her vocals weren't competing with the band. I really enjoyed the several instrumentals she played and thought the camera work was very fun and kept me in the heat of the action. The bonus concert is really terrific and the interview gave me a nice background on Sue. I just don't think you could ask for more...2 shows and an interview for under $20...that is good value. I have already purchased 2 of her CDs after viewing this and I'm hooked...a new favorite for me. I should say....I like her voice better than Susan Tedeschi and her guitar playing is waaaaay beyond Susan's. If you are a fan of hers I recommend very very highly , if you aren't ...well maybe you will fall for her like I did and be very happy to find this amazing artist!』

(Sue Foley Rocks)
『Sue Foley is awesome. I've seen her live a couple times and loved it both times. This video will give you a good feel for her style: Blues Rock. She can really drive it.

This is a must have for any Blues Lover.』

(Don't expect too much)
『I've been an electric blues fan for more than 50 years, and it's tough for any blues artist to make a living, so it's with some reluctance that I find myself thinking "Don't buy this DVD." Foley is attractive, and a talented guitar player, but for on-stage blues performance, you also usually need a good singing voice, and she just doesn't have one. Even on the songs where she's actually singing accurately (meaning "on the note instead of flat"), I found her Billie Holliday-type voice grating on my last nerve. I generally prefer the sound of a Gibson or a Strat to a Telecaster for blues, but much of the music Foley performs is country blues that was originally acoustic, so the Telecaster is a sensible choice in that context. Contrary to some, I thought the camera work, lighting and sound were just fine -- I like to see what the guitarist is doing, and there are plenty of shots of that, which I liked. Overall, I can't question her effort, and she'd probably be fun to jam with, but this DVD seems more like a good amateur performance, say, by a band made up of college kids at a party, than a professional group of musicians. Sounds harsh, even to me, but I wasn't at all impressed, and will purchase no other music by Sue Foley.』

(Foley''s Guitar Always Sounds Good)
『This was better than I had hoped for, and I expected a decent blues concert DVD. I got better than "decent," because of the instrumental work in here and the good selection of numbers. Bascially, this is a feel-good concert where most of the time, if you like blues, you are more than enjoying this. What's even better is that there are two concerts in here. On the second, a bonus, Sue repeats some of the songs but the good news is that she sounds a lot better. Her voice is far better than on the main concert. I don't know what her problem was that night but at least I know - thanks to that bonus feature - that she's a better singer than I first thought.

Sue Foley's guitar playing is excellent. That, there is NO doubt. I never realized she was this talented. She also isn't bad to look at, which doesn't hurt. The selections vary from up-tempo (the majority) to ballads to one that even had a bit of a country-ish flavor. In almost all her songs, she never overpowered any of the instrumental work which includes a couple of short but wonderful keyboard solos.

(The Bonus Concert Clicks)
『The first show in a small club in Germany, the Sue Foley Band seems at times stiff in front of the cameras. It really doesn't cook until about two-thirds thru when they play material from "New Used Car". The filmwork also has too many shots from the knees upward. The room is dark, the older audience laid back. The best part is the close-ups of Sue Foley working her pink guitar with multiple colored lights in the background. It's a good show more for listening than viewing. The live version of "Absolution" is a roof raiser. The second concert in Amsterdam is Sue at her loose, live best. The venue is bigger and Foley works the larger audience like an outdoor festival. Her vocals aren't as good as the first show, but it doesn't matter. It's all about the guitar and upbeat presentation. The supporting band keeps right in step with solid piano work doing great live versions from "Young Girl Blues" and "Change". Luckily they must of forgot the cameras were on. It's a short live dandy. The bonus interview is well done as Foley talks about her beginning years to the present including "The Guitar Woman" project. Overall it's a very good DVD worth the purchase. 21 total songs, 4 of which are repeated in the second show.』
『Sue Foley is one of the leading lights of the contemporary blues scene. Through the DVD Live In Europe you can fully enjoy her remarkable songwriting skills and unique vocal style live. She has the remarkable ability to add a contemporary twist to each』

(An excellent learning tool)
『As a child, I studied music, but I wanted to brush up on my music theory. This video presents classical and jazz music theory in a very accessible way.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Duke Ellington's arrangement of the same are used to illustrate different aspects of music. Marsalis uses visual aids that tie the music theory to everyday aspects of life.

This is a great video for kids and adults to learn more about the music that they are appreciating.』

If you enjoyed this review make sure to check out my Amazon user profile to check out my other reviews. I am always up for making new friends and discussing the music I love!!!』

(Really Good CD)
『I have been listening to Tiffany since her Debut album came out. I have to say that this album is by far my favorite from her. I've read a couple of critics compare this album to Alanis' Jagged Little Pill and I do agree. This album is defiantly more edgy than her squeaky clean albums. I wish she would stick to the more rock than pop side. I think it suits her voice so much better. I recommended this album to all the fans that followed her career and those that liked Jagged Little Pill. I was kind of surprise that this album did not take off like it should have. I'm not Sleeping, I will not breakdown, Piss U off, Silence, All the Talking, Good enough for me, and Butterfly hare my favorites on this album.』

(Tiffany is grown up and better and sexier than ever!)
『I've always liked Tiffany. That statement would sound insane to all my friends who know me as a punk rocking, thrashing, axe slinging metalhead. But for some reason I like her. Maybe it is because we share the exact same birthday, maybe I have a thing for redheads, or maybe, just maybe her music touches me in a way no one elses does. Tiffany was cute in the 80's but wow have you seen her lately? When she did her spread in Playboy I nearly died. Beautiful face and an awesome body.

I think it is a shame the Color of Silence was released with no fanfare, hardly any promotion, and was gone from the record shelves almost the same week it hit. Too bad, I think this album was a great effort and should have had some top 10 singles. What I'm trying to say is that this is a very strong album with much artistic merit, but I think poor Tiffany is still chained to the memories of 'I think we're alone now' which most of her listeners. That is a shame too because a woman in her 30's certainly has something different to offer than when she was 16.

My two favorite cuts on this CD are 'Piss U off' and 'Butterfly'. The whole album is great though. SO get the CD, find the first highway you can, blast Tiffany, and lose yourself in memories, thoughts, and feelings. I do.』

(a jewel)
『wow! when i first saw Tiffany on vh1 from México, i thaought she was only plastic and bubble gum tunes... actually i like all kind of music, and of course, i inmediatly fell in love of Tiffany, and i decided to buy this album for only one purpuse: to meet her soul. And now, i can't separate my heart from her music&Voice! I hope that some day she will have the recognitions that she truly deservs since a long, long, long time ago.
My favorite songs are open my eyes, i'm not sleeping, if only, silence and Christenning. Bye then, and buy this awsome jewel!!!!』

(Wow!)
『Tiffany has grown up and so has her music. This work is excellent. I just hope it gets judged on its own and not prejudged based on Tiffany's teeny-bopping past.
The opening song (Open My Eyes) starts off slow (but good) and turns into a nice little rocker. 'I'm Not Sleeping' picks up right at that pace and pushes it further. The next 2 songs are ambitious and good, keeping the pace moving along.
The 4th song (I Will Not Breakdown) is probably my second favorite. Although this is one of the few songs on this project that Tiffany did not co-write, she really seems to be into it. It is a medium-paced, vocal-driven ballad.
The next several songs are an eclectic mix of styles and paces. Tiffany does them well, hitting the moods and ranges where needed. While they might be a bit of an odd mix, they do showcase her talents.
She really hits her stride again with 'Betty', a fantastic soulful ballad. This would be my favorite tune of the bunch. Once again, although Tiffany did not co-write the song, she really gives it everything.
Her next song (Cinnamon) is another odd sort of song. It is a bit out of place, yet totally fitting. It is followed by 'Butterfly', to end the CD.
Perhaps because Tiffany has not come out with many CD's since her teen-age days, this seems like a jumbled (but very solid and enjoyable) bunch of songs. Yet, I think if you really listen to the words and follow the pattern, you will see some themes coming out.
Tiffany appears to be sending a message that she is back and ready to make her name again in the music world. If she continues with works like this, she will be totally back and even better than ever.

(Great Rare Concert footage!)
『I really enjoyed this dvd, I was looking for a live show of Blondie from the 70's. I agree with the last reviewer, its well worth getting if your a Blondie fan. The quality is perfect and Debbie Harry looks beautiful. Its great to see them in their early years when they still had a punk edge, I wish they would release more footage like this.』

(Live Tv concert from 1979 BBC program.)
『This is the live concert given by Blondie for the BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1979. I am pretty sure this is the same program that has also produced several bootleg lps back in the day as well as have the live versions of "I Feel Love" that was on the "Union City Blue" maxi cd from 1995 and the live version of "Heroes" on the Blonde&Beyond cd from 1993. This dvd is only 40 minutes long and features the group with Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison in the line up. The sound is great as well as the picture. The only gripe about the concert was that you really couldn't see Debbie's face until around "Union City Blue" - in that either it was hidden behind her hair or the lighting was a bit dark at times. And my second gripe is the end of "Sunday Girl" was cut off. If this was for tv then I am assuming it was the end of the show and the credits rolled at that time but it was great to see them perform the song because there is no video for the song--plus loved the guys playing bagpipes . The other scary part was seeing Clem Burke in the lame suit!!!! But watch him play drums and you will see that he is one of the best rock drummers ever. There are only 11 tracks on the dvd and a bit short but any chance to see vintage Blondie perform at all is worth the 5 stars and any amount of money. "Picture This","Shayla","Union City Blue" and "Pretty Baby" were great to see performed live. A+++++ just for the fact that Debbie Harry is on this dvd.』
『Fronted by the formidable Debbie Harry, New York's finest New Wave punk band catapulted to fame in the late '70s with their innovative style and groundbreaking sound. Filmed live at the peak of Blondie's success, this program showcases the band performing their utterly contagious classics at Glasgow's Apollo Theatre. Songs include: Dreaming, Slow Motion, Shayla, Union City Blue, Atomic, Eat to the Beat, Picture This, Pretty Baby, Heart of Glass, Hanging on the Telephone, Sunday Girl.』
『Now that Deborah Harry and Blondie are reunited and back at it in the new millennium, folks are remembering what a great pop band they always were--and this 1979 concert in Glasgow, Scotland offers definitive proof. They were lumped in with the '70s "new wave" movement, but actually, it was the way Blondie melded older sources--like punk, disco (especially on the hit "Heart of Glass"), and the classic sensibility of Phil Spector and the Brill Building ("Pretty Baby" and "Sunday Girl" are only two of the contagiously melodic tunes performed here)--that helped them create an irresistible pop sound. The band's playing is good (especially by powerhouse drummer Clem Burke); Harry's sexy, slightly Warhol-esque vibe is in full effect; they even bring on some bagpipers for the finale. Sure, the set is short (11 songs, 41 minutes); on the other hand, few complained when the Beatles used to perform for less than half an hour. And if the DVD film quality is a little grainy and the sound is kinda tinny, well, these are quibbles when measured against the sheer charm of seeing Blondie in their prime.--Sam Graham

『This is an excellent set of blues backing tracks. It includes slow blues, a couple of shuffles, blues in minor key and even a Latin type flavor blues. The tracks are about five minutes long give or take, and you set up your guitar (or harmonica or any other instrument theoretically) and jam. It's that simple. I intend to be jamming to this for a while.

The back up band that plays this is Oscar Jordan and the Mighty Sons of Hercules. This is an actual band that makes recordings and plays in clubs. It's a talented band and a professionally made dvd. In addition to the backgroud tracks there are three live performances of the band.

(This is great...)
『Great buy. Easy to use, lets you just set up at the TV and switch over to a practice session when the mood hits. The advantage in softwares such as Band In The Box for practice at least for me, has been that you can transpose whatever track you have to any or every key if you feel like it - however the setup overhead to getting everything around the computer that I need to practice is more time comsuming. Just using the DVD on the TV and having these sessions right there makes it not only easy but also fun. The variations are very nice, the latin flavor blues, slow shuffles, or rocking tempos, give you a nice workout. The visual queues from the "band" on the TV screen are great - more realistic then playing off a software lead sheet on a PC screen. It is worth the money and a must have for anyone buying or working on the "learn these licks" or scales instruction books on the blues topic. Takes all the tedium out of learning new licks or even running your scales.』

(Great Way To Practice With A Virtual Band)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2NMM0S8V2P4EThis is a great DVD for someone who wants to play the blues but doesn't have the time to get together with others. These guys make it real easy to get your chops good and improve the standard of your lead playing. It is so easy to use, the tune up section gets you ready and away you go. Everyone who owns a guitar and plays the blues should own this DVD, $20 so cheap for such an important tool.』

(Fun, but helpful as well)
『I have to admit, I purchased this DVD as more of a novelty, and was happily proven wrong. It was a blast, and with much more content and effective instruction than I initially thought. The musicianship of Oscar Jordan and his band is a great inspiration to improve my own skills. The DVD was easy to follow, and production quality is excellent. Highly recommended!

(HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
『this DVD is a step above the rest. i am not the best guitar player, but i have so much fun jamming out with this blues band! they say, "time flys by when your having fun!" well, the 1st time i played this DVD, i didnt put my guitar down for 5 hours!! haha great buy!』

(Synopsis)
『From the back:

Here's Willie Nelson's official, authorized video biography! "Willie Nelson: My Life" is the close-up portrait of America's favorite singer/songwriter, from the days he sold one of his early hits, Family Bible, for $50 to buy milk for his children through his long struggle to superstardom. Included are frank and sometimes humorous interviews with Willie and his friends Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris, Sydney Pollack, Gary Busey, Mel Tillis, Ray Price, Jerry Jeff Walker and others.

The soundtrack features vintage live performances of over 20 of Willie's biggest hits, including On the Road Again, Stardust, Whiskey River, Crazy, Nitelife, Funny How Time Slips Away, Red Headed Stranger, Shotgun Willie and Seven Spanish Angels (with Ray Charles).

"Everything in this video, both the good and the bad in my life, is the absolute truth." - Willie Nelson』

(Willie Nelson - My Life)
『The is a wonderful story about an amazing man. I enjoyed every minute of the film and have watched it over and over. I can't get enough of his friends and the insights they all have about Willie. This is a "must have" if you are a fan of any country, rock music, or Southern poetry.』

(Great!)
『I am probably Willie's #1 fan (of course there are others who feel this way). I absolutely loved this and definitely recommend it for anyone. All Willie fans will want a copy of this!』

(Reviewing My Willie Nelson CDs&DVDs)
『If you are reading this you probably already know that Willie is one of the most creative, powerful, and diverse performers of all time. In this review, I'm not going to rate the albums, just offer some insights into the CD's and DVD's that I have purchased - and I'm glad I've purchased them all.

"The Essential Willie Nelson" is essential. Be that as it may, Willie's individual CD's are so strong and the songs are so interrelated, often in a story or a tight thematic format, that they almost make the "essential" Willie Nelson unessential - but it is such a great collection of songs, that you can't get as easily any other way. Definitely worth the buy.

"The Red Headed Stranger" is one of the greatest albums of all time. It is pure genius. If you get the 70th birthday edition, you get a remastered track and extra songs. There are no less than six "A" level songs on this CD, nothing short of amazing. Plus, you get fourteen minutes of great story telling. As a story teller, Willie is only rivaled by Native American artist Robert Mirabal ("Indians Indians", "Taos Tales", "Music From A Painted Cave", "Mirabal", etc.).

"Willie and Family Live", done around 1975, is a great live album. It has lots of energy. A highlight for me was Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, and Johnny Paycheck singing "Amazing Grace" together. It also contains the fourteen minute story of the Red Headed Stranger, including "Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain". This live performance of Willie's first #1 hit is the best I have heard on any album. There is a little extra "oomph" on every song in the CD. Again, make sure you get the 70th birthday edition, it has extra goodies.

If you like the early super hits that Willie wrote for everyone else, like "Crazy", "Night Life", and "Funny How Time Slips Away", then you need to also get the "Milk Cow Blues" CD. Willie performs these and more Blues standards, usually in a duet format, with outstanding artists such as B.B. King - Rolling Stone Magazine's choice as the 3rd greatest guitarist of all time. Hearing BB and Willie strum and sing together on "Night Life" and "The Thrill is Gone" is indeed a thrill. Willie performs this album with a first class Blues band and it is a first class Blues album.

Willie's latest album, "It Will Always Be" is once again a solid piece of work. Duets with Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams help make it special, but the best part of this album is the haunting duet of Willie and Paula Nelson on the song "It Will Always Be". This is a song that hits you in the gut, and it rivals Bruce Springstein's "Streets of Philadelphia" in terms of its raw emotion. A number of people, including me, cried the first time they heard it: "I'm tied of this and I'm running out of time; feels like dyin', feels like cryin'; and I'm running out of time." Say it ain't so, Willie!! A second good song was written by another member of the Nelson clan. The title song is very beautiful. The tribute to the land Willie loves, "Texas", is too short but very meaningful. If this was Willie's last CD, he went out as "The Midnight Rider", a great song for the leader of the outlaw movement: "They ain't gonna catch me, I ain't go let `em catch the Midnight Rider."

"Spirit" and "Teatro" are brother/sister CDs. Both have a strong thematic core, although they are not stories. "Spirit" is one of those rare CD's when every note seems important. For most, you'll listen to it less than the other CD's, but love it equally as much. For a few, you'll play it by the hours. It is essentially a story of coping with lost love, redefining your relationship with yourself and with God, and finding love again. The music and the whole CD are moderately paced, with a strong, steady spiritual tone to it. It has a light Latin sound, essential to Willie's roots. Pictures of Willie on this album look like he came from an ancient Holy Land.

"Teatro" is the mirror of "Spirit". Again, it is a story of coping with lost love, but the story goes south, ending in murder and psychological ruin. Teatro means "theater" in Spanish and this is good to keep in mind in listening to the CD. It is just a play folks! The CD is very hard-hitting, because Willie's music is very hard-hitting and very close to the heart. The music tends to have a lively beat, with strong Latin overtones. Its haunting nature is reinforced by Emmy Lou Harris, who accompanies Willie on most of the songs. The back picture on the back of the CD case is one of the best pictures of Willie ever taken.

The "My Life" DVD is well worth the buy. The story ends before the 90's, but there is a brief update. I knew about Willie and Farm Aid, but I didn't know about the scope of his philanthropy and the diversity of populations targeted in his giving until this DVD. I was also amazed to learn that he paid his $16 million IRS debt off in one year, selling $17 million worth of songs as info-mercials to radio stations. That's a lot of love, translated into a lot of power.

A number of people criticize the "Live In Amsterdam" DVD and some of the criticisms are merited. But hey, the DVD has a large collection of great songs. Some criticisms are not fair. You perform differently and 70 than you do at 40, it is a biological rule. Willie's shows have always moved quickly from one song to the other, so the pace of the concert is nothing new. The love from the audience is shown at the end when Willie is signing autograph after autograph. The bottom line is this, if you like Willie, if you would like to watch him live occasionally instead of just hearing him through the box, and if you want those images of him at 70, then you should buy this DVD. You'll find it worthwhile.

In the final analysis, the raw power of Willie's work, formed by singing in the cotton fields with Black and Mexican laborers, and his keen insight into what people really want in music, formed not through record company analysis but through live performances on the ground, make Willie Nelson one of the most creative, powerful, and loved performers of all time.
