(Montserrat's voice casts a seductive spell,Viva Diva!)
『Montserrat Caballe is the voice of all ages. She continues to bring joy to millions around the world. This latest recording finds caballe in lovely voice, with plenty of lush pianissimos. While I was listening to this album I felt immersed into a very spiritual atmosphere, that nearly carried me out of my body.I realised this peaceful music transformed by Caballe's celestial singing was levitating me closer to the pearls of spanish mysticism.
I will treasure this fabulous 24 bit recording for the rest of my life.

This is ravishingly beautiful singing from Caballe's latter years. She was in her late 60s during the recording of this beautiful little gem of spanish renaissance songs.Highly reccomended to all who love the ethereal voice of montsy as well as those intrigued by early spanish music, which is an important facet of spanish culture.』

('Spirit and music, song and instrument...')
『The heart of this collection of Spanish Renaissance canciones is the enduring musical presence of Montserrat Caballe, whose vivifying art spans the second half of the twentieth century like a colossus. I can think of few artists who better exemplify the humility required to consistently reveal art as an essential component of human progress. Caballe, among them all, is the complete humanist, the complete artist. Who can afford not to be grateful for these things?

She sings accompanied only by the intriguing vihuela de mano, masterfully played by Manuel Cubedo. Fittingly used for these musical gems of renaissance Spain, this stringed instrument possesses a complex intonation conformed to the human voice. The CD notes hold another gem - an essay (printed in three languages) by Cesar Rodriguez Campos, called "The Enraptured Spirit: Song and Vihuela de mano in the 16th Century", an informative addition to a compelling disc. The Spanish text of each song is also provided.

Caballe's genial musical majesty pervades every track. Those elements of her art that inform and transcend the operatic canon, are present here, refined to mystical simplicity and pleasure: the artist in her native tongue, lissome ornamentation, serious preparation and scholarship. What emerges is a portrait of the artist as carriage of the spiritual. So, this is a transforming recording. You can say this is Montserrat after opera. I think the arc of her art extends even to these delicacies. Only one whose gifts replenished the operatic art's true conformation, as being one that must rest upon the human voice alone as on an unchangable foundation, could create a recording as revealing as this one. Recommended.

("Great" she may be, BUT ABSOLUTELY NOT in this repertory!!)
『I'm really not sure what this recording (or should I say this series) is getting at...

Presumably, Montserrat Caballe had either lost enthusiasm for playing endless operatic divas, felt she had lost her youthful agility and technique (resorting to "easier"[?] music), or perhaps even wanted to exhibit a sense of patriotism by showing that - yes - Spain had an equivalent to the German Lieder tradition (albeit an earlier one).

But just who is this recording aimed at...? Are seasoned Caballe fans really interested in music from 15th and 16th century Spain...? Are passionate early music listeners - familiar with this repertory from the numerous infinitely superior recordings available - really wanting to hear a fruity and unashamedly operatic interpretation of this repertoire...? Indeed the most irritating feature of this recording is the sheer arrogance with which these performances are presented. No performer, no matter how great or experienced, is appropriate for every type of music. Would Emma Kirkby be a suitable Carmen in Bizet's renowned Opera...? Would Ella Fitzgerald be appropriate for a recital of Wolf's 'Italienisches Liederbuch', or Michael Jackson for Schubert's 'Die Winterreise'...? I think not. Suffice to say that there is not a single scrap of evidence which could be called upon to justify Caballe's wobbly style in this music...

And of course, it would all perhaps be infinitely more acceptable if both she and her accompanist could at least attempt to sing and play in tune. Caballe's intonation is decidedly unreliable; indeed, she is often flat as a pancake, and in certain tracks completely off-key (try track 19 for starters). Perhaps this is partially the result of her dire accompanist, who is quite simply one of the most abysmal vihuela players I've EVER heard (and not a patch on exponents like Rolf Lislevand, Jose Miguel Moreno and Xavier Diaz-Latorre). If you're looking for a recording to shatter the myth that opera singers are better than early music singers, THIS most definitely is it. Personally, I believe she should stick to her dying diva roles. Indeed, looking at the photograph on the back of the CD (in which she wears pastiche "Elizabethan" frocks), one could believe she has just walked out of a production of Donizetti's 'Maria Stuarda' - she certainly sounds like she has...』

(BOB)
『Bob the Builder are great for little ones and easy to understand the concepts of sharing, working together and completing a job!』

(Great video!)
『I'm not too sure why this video has gotten so many bad reviews, but we definitely think it is worth 5 stars in our house. It's very nice how Wendy surprises Bob with a birthday party and how the trucks make him a "cement" birthday cake. Wendy even gets to go line dancing in this video since Mavis sprained her ankle. The trucks get in on the act and do their own special "line dance." The segment on Spud trying to learn some manners is very cute, with Bob reminding him on how to wipe his mouth and to eat with utensils.

All-in-all, we give this one a 5 star rating. It's very enjoyable, moves very well and is quite educational.』

(Very good video)
『My little brother just got this for his birthday - he's five and he loves Bob the Builder - so I watched it with him and I must say I was very favourably impressed. This is probably one of the best children's programs around. I appreciated the fact that all the characters were very positive - no bad attitudes etc - and just loved to work together and were kind to one another.

The stories on this video... The first was about Bob's birthday, when he thinks everyone has forgotten but Wendy dahling makes it a surprise party and assures Bob she'd never forget his birthday, while Spud waits impatiently for cake.

The second was a little story about Spud having dessert with Bob and Wendy and trying very hard to behave himself. Very cute.

In the third story Wendy goes to visit her sister and while she is gone Bob leaves Pilchard in charge of the office and re-landscapes Wendy's back garden, which is a mess. Needless to say, she is very touched when she sees the great improvement in her garden, but I wonder what she thought the next morning when she went into the office?

The fourth little story is about Dizzy helping Wendy to water the new garden.

The fifth story... Bob takes a day off to go photograph a rare bird in Farmer Pickles' field, but something has gone wrong with the computer and Wendy can't leave the office, so she keeps calling Bob to do the work until the repairman gets there. The repairman is a rather absentminded fellow who remembered to bring his lunch and is allergic to cats - or was it peanut butter?

The sixth story is another short one where some hedgehogs help Bob clean up a littered road (with a subtle hint at the very good point, "Don't litter")...

The seventh story concerns a cowboy line-dancing contest in which Bob plans to take part, with Mavis from the good old P.O. On the evening of the contest, Wendy has a pity party to Pilchard about being stuck at home watching TV while the rest of the town is dancing all night. And just then, Bob's cell phone rings, and it's Mavis who has sprained her ankle... so, Wendy drops a few rather obvious hints in Bob's direction and... off they go.

The last one was a little story about Dizzy and Roley singing with Bird. Pilchard jumps on the wall and frightens Bird and the Curtain Descends.

I recommend this highly.』

(My 2 year old loves this video)
『We have a rule in our house that our son can only watch one video per day, and he always chooses this video/DVD. It keeps his attention and he learns a lot from it. I especially like the segment where Spud has to learn his manners, it reinforces saying "Please" and "Thank You".』

(Very, very disappointed)
『As has been said in these reviews, the fact that the Bob company couldn't figure out how to make a dvd is really sad.

The content is okay, but until this company figures out how to make tracks and a menu, I would wait to buy anything from them. When you can't get past the previews or go to a particular track, you may as well have the vhs.』
『Looks like Bob the Builder™ is in for a busy, busy day! There’s a dance contest, a surprise birthday party, a really messy office and a broken computer! No prob, Bob! It’s all in a days work for Bob and the rest of the gang as they gear up for their daily dose of fun. The day begins with Bob and Mavis out to win the dance contest, but when Mavis sprains her ankle, can Wendy step in? Then, Bob is in for a surprise – it’s his birthday! Unfortunately, it seems like everyone has forgotten his special day! Speaking of surprises, Wendy’s friends are building her a new garden…but who’s minding the office? Never fear – with Bob the Builder and his friends on the job, no problem is too big! Can the fix it? Yes, they can! Approx. Run Time: 45 minutes』
『It's always a party when Bob the Builder is around--even when he has work to do! In "Bob's Birthday," he thinks everyone's forgotten his big day, but Wendy has a surprise in store for him: a party. In "Bob's Big Surprise," he decides to treat Wendy to a surprise of her own when he builds a backyard garden while she's away. In "Bob's Day Off," he attempts to enjoy some time off to do a little bird watching, but duty won't stop calling. In "Buffalo Bob," he makes plans to compete in a line-dancing contest with Mavis. Wendy wishes she could go, too, and when Mavis sprains her ankle, she gets her chance. This 45-minute program includes four mini-adventures: short skits on manners, recycling, and other topics.Celebrate with Bobencourages children aged 3 to 6 to take responsibility seriously, to show respect for others--and to have fun!--Kathleen C. 『What about "Succumbs"?...the first REM video available on VHS but never put out on DVD. Anyone who has seen it will agree. The band/record company has done such a great job in releasing video compilations and live concert video. REM has more available on DVD than any other band I can think of. But "Succumbs" has pre-1987 REM, some stuff dating back to 1983 or early '84. I know that old-school fans would also like to see a complete REM unplugged release from the 1987 MTV broadcast. Please!!』

(Great Collection of Early R.E.M. Videos)
『There are reviews listing which tracks are included, so I will not waste your time relisting them. This DVD includes the earlier R.E.M. videos (Michael Stipe with lots of hair, pre the half buzz-cut/long braid down the back, which was followed by the short cut which was followed by the current shaven dome). These videos are accused of being amatuerish in sophistication when compared to the multi-million dollar videos that are shot today, however this video does have artistic merit. These are the videos I remember watching in my disgruntled youth and being so impressed that R.E.M. had actually made it onto MTV. Pop Song 89 is on this disc in its original version which MTV refused to show because of the topless female dancers without "black barring" the bare breasts. True to form, rumor has it, Stipe insisted on having his chest black barred as well.

If you are not a hard core R.E.M. fan you can probably do without this DVD (unless you are truly interested in the progression of the Stipe-do). I would suggest "Parellel", (which is excellent) or "In Time" which are more what the mainstream consider R.E.M.』

(Purchase a different R.E.M. product)
『Yuk! The cover of this DVD is misleading -- the cover does not disclose that this product is merely a collection of amateurish (artistic?) video clips running in tandem with R.E.M. music. Be warned -- this is not a collection of the band's professional videos; and the band should have ethically disclosed this fact on the cover. This taught me not to buy music DVDs in some store; instead I'll check reviews on this website beforehand and purchase through Amazon.』

(Surprisingly good)
『I liked this documentary because it covers the basics and they were able to use the songs and footage from the reunion in '93. It does clue in on what made them influential.

There are documentaries on Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico that are on TV and video worth checking out.

I think they should've interviewed Jonathan Richman and Penn Jillete though.』

(An Archival Musical History Tour of One of Rock's Most Influential Bands)
『Essential for it's rare movie clips, 'The Velvet Underground: Under Review,' features archives from Andy Warhol's museum and other snippets during the influential band's career during the 1960's. Including live performances from their album, 'The Velvet Underground and Nico,' the core of its focus, however, is on analysis by journalists and authors (Robert Christgau of 'Village Voice' and Clinton Heylin to name but two). Also, leaning heavily on those with first hand access to the band (namely line producer, Norman Dolph; "Factory" Warhol associate, Billy Name; Velvets' patron Dean Wareham; and Boston Tea Party manager, Steve Nelson), the composite remains resourceful enough. Even Velvets' expert, Sal Mercuri, is able to demonstrate some of the process, subtleties, and alterations found in their music.

Significantly, Lou Reed and John Cale aren't interviewed, but drummer Maureen "Mo" Tucker and replacement bassist/organist Doug Yule fill in the gaps with some necessary anecdotes and explanations. While the films are preciously thin, pictures provide a nice focus during some attentive recollections and analysis. Excellent criticism and commentary assemble a cohesive history with perhaps the barest of resources.

Tidbits: 1.) One fascinating thing I learned is that "Sunday Morning" was originally intended to be a breakthrough commercial hit. I always assumed it was a nasty parody of groups like The Association.

2.) "The Most Difficult Velvet Underground Quiz in the World" is the interactive trivia pursuit bonus feature game. Quite fun, I managed to only achieve 10 correct out of 25, a mere 40% from a diplomatic and playfully named post-test. After about seven trial and error takes, I finally managed to get a 100% on the quiz and earned a piece of cheese (er,...make that banana!) in the end.』

(An excellent critical analysis of the music of the Velvets)
『I'm going to do something that shouldn't be as radical as it ought to be: actually review the DVD that was released, instead of a fictional DVD of the imagination that most of the other reviewers here bizarrely believe that it should have been.

VELVET UNDERGROUND and CAPTAIN BEEFHEART were the first two of a series of DVD that are intended to be critical analyses of the music of the band in question. I'm not sure where anyone would have gotten the impression that it was supposed to be a documentary in any other sense than that, but all the complaints I see lodged here are aimed at qualities that were never intended to be in the film to begin with. The aim of the series was go examine the music through a presentation of some archival film footage and extensive critical discussion. That is precisely what the DVD delivers. In fact, most DVD reviewers gave this disc glowing reviews when it was released.

I'm one of those odd birds who actually read critics. One of my favorite critics, Robert Christgau, is one of the more prominently consulted individuals in the film. I was overall enormously impressed with the insight the various individuals consulted regarding the Velvets' music. Only one truly ignorant statement was made in the course of the film, which is usual for a film of this type. Oddly, the truly awful statement was made by a critics I usually have a great deal of regard for, Clinton Heylin, author of the well known rock study FROM THE VELVETS TO THE VOIDOIDS. He says bald-faced that "Venus in Furs" is the most important rock single after "Heartbreak Hotel." One hardly knows what to make of such a statement, especially given that the one major acknowledged influence on the Velvets was Bob Dylan and especially his single "Like a Rolling Stone," which is frequently and rightfully regarded as the most influential rock song in history. And just before Dylan released "Like a Rolling Stone" the Stones released "Satisfaction." I love "Venus in Furs," but it impossible for me to compare in any meaningful fashion the influence of that song to either the Dylan or Stones' singles. But as I said, this was fortunately the exception rather than the rule in the DVD. Most of the reviewers (even Heylin) are otherwise very insightful in their comments on the album.

I strongly recommend this DVD to any fan of the Velvets. I've been listening to their music for over 30 years and I still learned a great deal about their music. I also recommend the series of DVDs as a whole. I would just ask potential viewers to keep in mind that these DVDs are focused on a critical evaluation of the music. They are not intended as biographical DVDs or attempts to present all the archival film footage that exists. I think those are great as well, but I welcome as much critical discussion of great music as possible.』

(review of the albums as produced)
『contrary to what a previous reviewer and what mo tucker says in the interview (everybody was not in all the loops all the time), andy warhol and the factory did act as producer of the velvet underground and nico album and art(the first album). it wouldn't have happened as it did if the band tried to push it independently. it was andy's connections and influence that made it move into production.

moe tucker is delightful and the critics and other reviewers insights are worth hearing. doug yule is cool. i got to give my input on the album art for the first time. any vu lover will enjoy this dvd. (no, i do not get a cut). billy name.』

(No Lou, No Cale)
『I am a big Velvets fan but found this documentary to be rather mundane and uninspired. I also wanted to hear about Velvet related activity in the 70's (ie solo Nico, solo Lou, solo Cale etc...)but no. This unoffical critical documentary just deals with the four studio albums. And Mo's the only original Velvet available for comment.

For such an avant-garde band you would think they would interview some avant-garde spirits but mainly you get Mo Tucker reminiscing. She really gives most of the credit for the bands sound to John Cale. You also get the very staid Doug Yule (John Cale's replacement) who is likable (and who we learn did provide the vocals on "Candy Says") but who admits to never havng been "in the loop" when band decisions were being made. It seems he was basically hired because the band needed a guitar player to tour with and he was a guy who was not going to cause any creative tension with the always contentious Lou. This was a band that had two leaders, Lou Reed and John Cale (who left band after second album), and neither of them say a word or are even quoted even once on this documentary. Mo is nice and provides a few interesting insights into how the bands dynamic changed with each line-up but she doesn't provide anything like revelations about what happened between Cale and Reed.

We learn:

Album #1: Warhol promoted but did not produce the album. Band was basically forced to work with Nico. Most critics say "Venus in Furs" was the albums masterpice and that this song changed rock music. "Sunday Morning" was supposed to sung by Nico and this was supposed to be the song that would make it to radio but Lou sang it instead (one critic claimed that Lou sang it in a more feminine way than Nico could have). The album was recorded in 8 hours according to Mo and it sat on a shelf for a year before it was released.

Album #2: Many critics claim this is the "purest" Velvet record. Its certainly the hardest and the fastest. "White Light/White Heat" was written by Cale one morning during a snowstorm after a night of speed. "Sister Ray" is one of Mo's all-time favorites.

Album #3: Mellowest record and a lot of people's favorite. Yule's favorite (perhaps because it was the first one he played on). Yule claims he likes it the best because they were a real fully functioning band playing well together when it was recorded. Critics say Cale's departure allowed the band to explore their own talents as musicians (when Cale played everyone else was pushed into the background). One critic raves about the "What Goes On" dueling guitar parts and I would recommend you go listen to that right now. It is really cool.

Album #4: Most critics concede that the band was not getting along during the recording of this record and that this one was written to gain commercial attention and that its much too compromised. Mo does not drum on the record because she was pregnant at the time it was recorded. "Sweet Jane" was written to be a radio hit.

Some of these tidbits are useful but due to lack of interview candidates, various V.U. controversies and mysteries are aired but remain as unresolved as ever.

Also the video footage is grainy and none of it is particularly mesmerizing. I understand that old super-8mm footage isn't going to be pristine but the breif splices of footage presented on this DVD are ridiculously blurry. You can tell its the Velvets but its not LIVE concert footage, rather the documentarians simply play the studio versions of the songs as they play a few seconds of grainy footage of Velvets just talking or hanging out or onstage. Most of the footage is Factory types dancing. Its pretty much a scrapbook collection, and a pretty scant one at that. Warholite Billy Name waxes about the iconic album covers that he designed.

If you want to know about the Velvets it is probably best to read the books they read and listen to their music etc....and write your own poetry and paint your own paintings while doing so. This will put you closer to the Velvet spirit than hearing club owners and record producers remember that night at Max's Kansas City.』

『Velvet Underground Under Review is a 75 minute film reviewing the music and career of one of rock musics most influential collectives; a band which esteemed music journalist Lester Bangs claims started modern music. It features rare musical performances』
