(A rollicking R&B set)
『This is an excellent R&B concert featuring Bill with a killer band including Albert Lee on guitar and Gary Booker on keyboards doing most vocals with 2 backup girls, Beverly Skeete and Janice Hoyte who deserve to be better known. The 12 songs include "Let the goodtimes roll", "Melody" (for Stones fans), "I put a spell on you", "Baby Workout", "Mystery Train" (for Elvis fans) and "Groovin'". The sound is excellent. Bill, we miss you at Stones concerts but you've built another terrific band.』

(One of The Banshees' best.)
『I love this DVD. I especially love that "Play At Home" is on the end of it. This is a great Banshee moment in time. I rate this second best to any concert footage featuring the late John McGeoch; guitarist.

Mr. Severin's part in "Play At Home" is pretty shocking. Trust me on this. It's certainly not what I expected.』

(Siouxsie at the height of her prowess)
『This was one of my fave records when I was 14 years old - I played it to death. I had never before seen the film - and what a joy it was. Siouxsie was at the height of her popularity then - Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse are most prominently featured here. "Voodoo Dolly" is so incredibly intense, you just watch transfixed. If you, like me, loved this album, you must see the concert film.』

(A Must Buy!)
『If you like Siouxsie and the Banshees, or Robert Smith (who plays guitar here), you MUST buy this masterpiece of goth rock.』

(GOTH NIGHT !!!)

A superbly shot show at The Royal Albert Hall in 1983, comprising material from their 5 first records. No songs from Hyena, though, maybe due to the poor reception that album had back then ( I personally still don't like it ). The tracklist is far from ideal IMHO but gets the job done and the end result is a majestic 60' show before a venue filled to capacity (I'd never seen so many punks together-not even at a punk show !! ). The takes are from two different nights but the editing is seamless so you barely notice anything but wardrobe changes (Siouxsie darling, please shave those armpits !! LOL !! ). Personally, I could have used any of the other guitarrists the band had but Robert Smith was an integrant at the time so I had to deal with that; nothing personal, but I prefer more aggro with my guitarwork and Smith's is softer and reminds me of The Cure.
The picture is vhs OK, 4:3, and plagued with some typical early video artifacts common to most of these old tapes; the most annoying being a milky veil that can be almost totally eliminated by maxing the color temperature adjustment on your dvd player (gamma). It could really have undergone some further enhancement.
The sound, on the other hand, has been remixed in 2.0 , 5.1 AND DTS !! but is still not perfect; the takes on the tom toms are faint, there's little lower end and the guitar lacks bite due to a general lack of treble, almost all of which can be satisfactorily corrected by cranking the bass and treble controls of your amp, so why has this not been done at the transfer stage ?!
The bonus tracks are 2 songs from TV show Old Grey Whistle Test (sound no good), the GORGEOUS Dear Prudence vid and the¨Play At Home¨ DIY film by the band including music and clip by parallel band The Creatures.
If you're a fan of the band, you must own this beauty. Clichéd I know, but true.』

(Best Live Album I've Ever Heard)
『This is a 5 stars live masterpiece without question. I was so ecstatically surprised when I took a chance on this album. I think I went into an altered state beyond amazement. The little things Siouxie did with her voice in the early days and the imagination of this band. The opening song Israel sets the standard of greatness and it just stays there all the way. Rusted Root has a good live album, but this one just blows me away. It is a hard to get album, but well worth the effort. Banshee fan or not, get this album!』

(I took Mike Birman's recommendation...)
『...and bought this DVD. I'm completely glad I did, but I have slightly different thoughts about it from Mike's.
First off, I've never been persuaded by Leonard Bernstein's interpretation of Mahler. Now, watching him wield the baton as if from the bassoonist's chair, I know why. He conducts the orchestra color more than the music. He grabs for every attack and pounces on every fermata. He disassembles the music rather than developing it. If you care to hear Mahler as I think it should be conducted, get the performance of Kindertotenlieder by Barbirolli on CD.
Well, you may be asking, why am I giving this DVD a five-star recommendation? It's the whole package! It's a deep and satisfying pleasure to watch and hear, even if one quibbles with the interpretation. Thomas Hampson is the most expressive and musical Mahler singer active today, rivaled ever only by Janet Baker. He has amazing control of his dynamics, producing both his darkest and his lightest tones at any volume, singing with amazing pianissimo when he chooses and yet penetrating through the orchestra. I've heard him perform the same miarcle in live concerts. I have to disagree with Mike about his expressiveness; with Bernstein cueing him on, he seems almost to over-emote at times, but I don't mind, given the perfection with which he shapes his lines. Lucia Popp has a glorious voice, and uses it both coyly and boldly in the Wunderhorn Lieder. Her singing of 'Wo die schoenen Trompeten blasen' is worth the time and money for the whole DVD. I'm not so taken with the voice of Walton Groenroos, but he carries his weight musically and expressively. The DVD has excellent audio and video technology. Very highly recommended!』

(Beautiful and tragic Lieder recital)
『If you are having a bad day and you're feeling depressed, you might not want to reach for this DVD. This recital of Mahler's beautiful but often tragic song cycles with orchestral accompaniment might just drive you over the edge. I'd prescribe Mozart for those days. But for every other occasion, this splendid DVD may be exactly what you need. Containing all of Mahler's mature song cycles (except for Das Lied von der Erde), they are magnificently sung by Baritone Thomas Hampson, Soprano Lucia Popp and Baritone Walton Groenroos and stunningly accompanied by the preeminent Mahlerian Leonard Bernstein conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic.

Of course, Mahler's lieder are the seedbed of his monumental symphonies. You will recognize melodies later used for the symphonies 2-4, for example. This can make it hard to judge the song cycles in strict isolation since we are constantly reminded of something much vaster just over the horizon. I like the symbiosis between Mahler's works; it helps that they're works of genius. With Bernstein as conductor, he naturally imparts that vast scale to these relatively intimate lieder. It gives them additional resonance.

Hampson performs the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer), the Ruckert Lieder and the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic. His tone is round and beautiful, his diction crystalline. Emotionally, however, he is somewhat reserved. He doesn't experience the emotions of these songs, he recreates them. If you demand emotional authenticity in your lieder, real tears streaming down the singers face, you may be put off by Hampson's emotional distance. I find that the poetry of these songs provides more than enough emotion for my tastes. The accompaniment of the Vienna Philharmonic is superb, as expected. This is a great orchestra and the sound of the Musikvereinssal in Vienna, recorded in 1988 and 1990, is splendidly recaptured in this recording.

Lieder nach Gedichten aus 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' or Songs to poems from 'The Youth's Magic Horn', containing as they do so much music later used in the great Symphony No.2, will always be an addendum to the symphony for many. It helps to really throw yourself into them. Lucia Popp and Walton Groenroos do exactly that. They experience the emotions, not just recreate them, making for an interesting comparison with Hampson's performance. Since they're children's songs, this is easier to do and there's no danger of slipping into a maelstrom of bathos. The Israel Philharmonic is a younger, more enthusiastic orchestra with many women instrumentalists, as opposed to Vienna's older, all-male band. The 1984 performance seems quicker. The recorded sound is somewhat dry though not unpleasant. It is crystal clear in the DVD's DTS 5.1 format. The total time of this Region 0 worldwide disc is 127 minutes. There are the usual menus, languages and DGG trailers.

No doubt these performances will someday be surpassed. Until then, I don't think you can do better than these recordings of Mahler's gorgeous songs. Strongly recommended.

(Not a good DVD)
『I was disappointed in this DVD. Luckily I rented it and did not buy it. The interview part is odd in that there is not a lot of discussion about music, it's more about philosophy and life in general. he also picks his nose a lot and often there are several seconds of silence where Todd just sits with a blank look on his face. The interviews are interrupted with song videos, and they are mostly pretty bad. I'm a Todd fan, but I would not recommend this DVD. I was expecting interesting interviews and decent concert/music footage; this DVD has abstract interviews barely releated to music and a bunch of very trippy and psychedelic, generally boring, music videos. Todd doesn't play guitar at all on this entire DVD; there is only one live concert part and Todd only sings on it he doesn't play any instruments. The highlights of the DVD for me were the "Elpee Worth of Toons" video, which is a great song and funny video, and the other highlight was the interview section about Todd's drug use, which I found interesting. I learned nothing about Todd's career, nothing about all of his bands, nothing about the records he has made-- there was no "Behind the Music" or "History of Todd" at all, and that's what I was interested in.』

(artistic visionary statement with a dash of humor indeed)
『all of the newest reviews here talk as if this is a new piece of art. actually, it was done in the 80s with a commission from the bbc to do a retrospective. it is a bit self-indulgent but thats always been one of the negative things about old todd vs new todd..nowadays he has a bit more patience with things. this was him shooting the whole thing kind near his home in upstate ny....at the time what todd was doing -even the concepts utilized in the presentation was new..to say it was a waste of time is like saying is like saying 8 tracks or lps are a waste of time..if youre comparing it to his groundbreaking art like change myself (then a 90s era period piece) or anything today, of course it is..the same way your pappy's old car is a waste of time today...it was a piece of 80s video ART....the content on here is nice, you get guest appearances from rick derringer, ian hunter and the elpee worth of tunes is a classic piece of self parody...for gods sake folks, have a sense of humor about it..it was homemade....the interview parts in the dvd are funny i think..hes doing a parody of himself or the he who others expect him to be..sorry some of you didnt get it....i dont think it was ever intended to compete with george lucas..if you love todd, you NEED this..it could have been transferred better but its nice to have it preserved on dvd.』

(If you like Todd's music DON'T WATCH THIS!)
『As a "long time Todd fan", I realize I need to re-define that to read "long time TODD'S MUSIC" fan, as I suppose I don't even really know Todd. If I were Todd and had any say so I would pull this waste of time and money from the shelves before anyone else has a chance to view it. I found it to be pseudo intellectual/philosophical to the point of nausea with cheezy dream/fantasy sequences set to music between interviews (which you can read about in the other reviews). Somehow I failed to read the fine print and thought I was getting live Todd performances with some interviews. (OOPS!)I can't believe the person who wrote so much great music is the personality protrayed on the DVD. Chalk it up to the 80's (or whenever this was produced) Sorry, Todd.』

(A complete waste of time)
『An interviewer who is unfamiliar with Todd's work asks Todd overly abstract questions, interrupted by amateurish videos for some of Todd's cheesiest '80s music. Focuses on Todd the songwriter/performer and ignores Todd the singer, guitarist, multimedia pioneer, arranger, producer, bandmember, etc. For example: the interviewer asks Todd if he believes in an afterlife; Todd -- inscrutable behind hair and sunglasses -- sits in silence for five seconds, touches his nose for a few more and refuses to answer the question. Tortured artist indeed. Then another video featuring a floating egg/brain/vagina/chambered nautilus object. This DVD was painful to watch, even with the remote control handy to speed through videos of Todd's naked backside. I actually feel that Todd is a lot less interesting now that I've seen this. Todd -- from a fellow Philadelphia/San Francisco boy who has been a fan for 20-plus years: do yourself and your fans a favor and get someone else to do this kind of thing for you.』

(Great content for true Todd fans, but poor quality DVD)
『If you're truly a Todd fan, you've probably seen this already in the VHS format. I've enjoyed it many times in that format and was excited to see it available on DVD...but was very disappointed when I finally viewed the DVD, as it looks like it's a second or third generation dub from the VHS copy. At least on the DVD I bought, the picture quality is so lousy I suggest you stay with the VHS.
So, 4 and a half stars for the material. One star for the visual quality.』

(Duke Robillard: Live at the Blackstone River Theatre)
『I saw this guy on a video on UTube and he sounded good. I was disappointed in the quality of his performance on this DVD. I will probably never watch it again.』

(Top Shelf DVD)
『This DVD is a treat for any music fan, especially anyone who have followed Duke's long and prosperous career. Set appropriately in a cozy theater, this collection captures the warmth of Dukes performances as well as his versatility. Filmed by an alert crew that is sensitive to the music, this DVD brings you close to feeling what the show was like to experience, not the roller coaster ride flying cameras that have become the fad. Camera gymnastics are not needed to make up for the excitement that is not in the music. Here the artistry of music rules and the thrills are in the playing&the interplay. The sound is mixed clearly with rich fidelity in the recording. In keeping with Duke's musical history, the performance bar is set high&the excellent musicians clear this standard seemingly effortlessly with consistent all pro musical delights. Hearing Duke play solo acoustic blues was a special treat for me, as well as the outstanding performance by Jerry Portnoy. As they have done for decades, Duke&friends leave you with a satisfied feeling. A must own DVD for blues, jazz&music fans everywhere- highly recommended.』

(Duke Robillard Live @ the Blackstone)
『Have you ever wished you could bring a world-class band into your own living room? Well, that's what will happen when you watch Duke Robillard Live @ the Blackstone!

Duke&Friends can - and do - play it all! Superb blues, jazz, swing&good-old Rock 'n Roll...there is something for every music lover on this DVD.

I don't want to tell you to much&give away all the surprises in this performance, but I will say that Duke&his Friends have stepped up their game&prove they are one of THE best bands on earth. Special kudos to Upright Bassist Marty Ballou for his strong, steady work on this show. He inspired me to get back to some hard practice on my own upright! Matt McCabe keyboards and a superb guest appearance by Jerry Portnoy are highlights!

The camera work&production is excellent throughout! A HIGHLY professional production. I own many many music DVD's&this is one of the best I have ever seen. BUY IT! YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!』
