Siouxsie is the consummate performer who seems to channel great spirits through her being, subsequently catapulting the audience into stratospheric states of consciousness. Like Peter Murphy and Bowie, she is a magician on the stage as she delivers interesting, energetic versions of songs with passion and grace.
The extras offered in this package make it a must. The backing musicians provide a special touch that elevates the sound and allows one of the greatest performers of our generation the ability to truly shine.
Siouxsie rocks!』
(Great, But could be better....) 『I caught Siouxsie&Co. at Stubb's BBQ in Austin, 2004. Having gotten there late, I was crammed somewhere in the back, so I missed out on some fantastic visuals. Having said this, I was thrilled when this DVD came out. In comparison to the live show I saw, the setlist was much the same....a good mix of new and old songs. Hai! is an incredible album, and the Kodo drums add so much intensity to the music. Siouxsie's voice was strong and clear, demonstrating that she's still a force to be reckoned with! All in all, I would highly recommend this DVD. Why only four stars? The production, editing and the hissy fits! There were computer graphics overlaid throughout much of this DVD that were totally unnecessary, at times downright annoying. Throughout the show, camera angles were switching every two to four seconds (notably during Dear Prudence) which was VERY distracting. Too many concert DVD's get caught in this techno-limbo, in between real substance and gloss. It is obvious they were going for an artful feel, but lost much of the essence of the performance in the meantime. It could have been pulled off a lot better. Lastly, the already well-documented HISSY FITS. She was very obviously annoyed by the too-cold air onstage, which prompted many foul-mouthed rants. Not that I mind the F-Bomb every now and then, I just think they could have edited them out. NOW....for the good stuff! Don't let the previous scare you off. If it's real, raw Siouxsie you are seeking, there is some great footage in the Bonus Materials. There are several intense songs performed at the 100 Club in London. Very intimate and Siouxsie SHINES! I'd buy this DVD all over again, if just for those few songs. Fantastic!』
(Not as Good as the seven year itch w/ the Banshees in 2001 !!!!!!!!!!) 『Well let me just say this was an interesting idea w/ the japanese kodo drummer and the millenia ensemble orchestra but to me it just Didnt totally work or pack much punch overall. I think the best moment in the show was when siouxsie did her batman forever hit "face to face" and the orchestra made the song feel more intense and important. It just seemed to me like Budgie and Knox chandler on guitar were kind of holding back a bit, if you wana see these 2 musicians at there best on dvd then you need to buy siouxsie and the banshees the seven year itch filmed in 2001 !!! Her voice here sounds a tiny bit better than the 7 year itch but Not a whole lot better though. Oh and there is some Magic missing in this concert w/out the Awesome an Agressive Steve Severin on Bass guitar, Knox chandler fills in on the bass duties sometimes in the concert but he just Doesnt have the Bombastic flair and Aggressive edge of Severin and chandlers bass duties are totally by the numbers and safe. Siouxsie looked a lot Sexier in the seven year itch also with her tight form fitting slacks and her glittery bra top showing when she removes her blouse. She seems a little larger and heavier in this concert but it was filmed 3 years after the seven year itch was. The light show on this concert was awesome at least but the set list was kind of so so to me.』
(siouxsie redux) 『An excellent performance by Siouxsie Sioux...what else could one expect.
Video quality is marred by whitewash from the spotlight and bluewash (I don't know what else to call it) when the floodlights aren't on Siouxsie.
Song selection is varied so you get a nice overview. An interview is included among the bonus features - the highlight of which is a performance at @ the 100 Club just prior to the recorded concert.』
(Superb show !) 『Superb show. Nice shots , picture&excellent sound. I really recomend this !』 『This DVD captures Siouxsie at her dramatic best and it marks the first time she has ever performed with a full orchestra. The show features Leonard Eto on Japanese Taiko Drums-a musical style of interest to Siouxsie and Budgie for countless years. 『When it comes to Siouxsie Sioux, fans know to expect the unexpected. Filmed at London's Royal Festival Hall in 2004, this two-act concert begins with a drum duet. As an image of the sun glows behind them, drummer Budgie and guest taiko master Leonard Eto work themselves into a frenzy as the other musicians join them on stage. While the percussionists pound away, the 15-member Millenia Ensemble takes their positions. Then Siouxsie makes her entrance in a cleavage-baring pantsuit and feathered headdress. The assemblage proceeds to perform 27 selections from her storied catalog. They tackle most of the expected Banshees and Creatures numbers, like "Christine" and "Kiss Them for Me." Throughout, the self-proclaimed Ice Queen vamps, struts, and even swears—fully living up to her reputation as one of post-punk's most theatrical performers. Except for an unsteady start on "Dear Prudence," her velvety voice sounds duskier than ever, and she and Budgie work well with their talented accompanists.Dreamshowmakes for a fine follow-up toNocturne, which captures Siouxsie and the Banshees live in 1983. Extras include a sound check, a rehearsal, short interviews with the central duo, and a five-song set filmed at the famed 100 Club.--Kathleen C. Fennessy』

(B-1) 『Kind of raw. Not what I expected. Lou Rawls looked out of place on some songs. One of the Mighty Clouds of Joy seems to "hog" in all the song by other artists. One or two bright moments though and should have expanded on the artists history more than they did.』
(to "wrong choice" Pauline) 『African Americans often come together to rejoice in the lord. Although we do not know each other, we are able to dance together, shout together and pray together with the help of great gospel music and great rhythm. We have much to holler, moan and cry about. Our ancesters often made up songs while picking cotton to pass the time away. These songs are still sung today. So far as "looking wild", wildness comes in all colors when one is feeling the holy ghost. Perhaps a toned down version of these songs (mormon tabernacle choir) would suit your fancy.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (The funniest of all Falstaff') 『Saw this production at covent Garden when it re-opened The House after it's colsure for refurbishments during the late 90's and have been waiting to purchase the DVD for many years. Bryn Terfel is Sir John Falstaff, and is certainly the funniest and greatest Sir John's that I have seen/heard. Barbara Frittoli is equisite in the role of Alice Ford. Terfel and Frittoli have great communication and stage precence as indeed most of the cast do under the strick batton of Bernard Haitink. I loved the staging (dircted by Graham vivk and designs by Paul Brown) vibrant yellow and blue designs create a feeling of pantomime/cartoon as indeed this is a great comedy of life as Sir John expresses at the beginning of the fugual finale "The whole world is a jest...but he who laughs last laughs best". If you want originality, great singing and acting, and above all a real laugh then don't look further than this version of Verdi's Falstaff』
(A Comparative Critique) 『This last weekend I spent a few hours comparing this DVD with the Von Karajan Falstaff DVD.
Many elements of this performance are superior to the earlier performance. Formost is the quality of the sound. The video quality is likewise superior. Both are videos of live performances but this performance was better captured.
Giuseppi Taddei was one of the finest baritones of the twentieth century. He had a repertoire of over 250 roles. He was famous for his Mozart roles as well as Verdi, Rossini, Puccini and Giordano. He was never a high baritone like Milnes or Warren. But on the other hand he could sing many basso buffo roles like Leporello. In short he could have been called a bass-baritone as Terfel is.
He had a very big personality. I saw him several times as Leporello. As Scarpia he just about ate all the scenery. In short he was an exuberant performer - again rather like Terfel.
So who's the better Falstaff. Terfel. Frankly I was surprised. I had recently done a similar comparison of Terfel's Don Giovanni DVD with the Von Karajan DVD. In that comparison Terfel came up far short of Sam Ramey's performance. But as Falstaff, Terfel is supreme. The voice is just right. It's large, rich and expressive.
Alas the other baritone - Frontali - is nowhere near as good as Rolando Panerai on the Von Karajan set. Panerai recorded Ford several times. It was a sort of specialty for him. He's sensational.
Barabra Fritoli is quite wonderful but perhaps a bit to young and glamorous. Raina Kabaivanska is also a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice but she's, as seen here a bit older, which provides more verisimilitude. Kabaivanska also milks the big sweeping melodies for more more juice than Fritoli. This may be because she phrases better or it may be that Von Karajan is a better conductor than Haitink. I know that I admired Fritoli's singing but I cried when I heard Kabaivanska.
Verisimilitude is a major problem with this set. The Von Karajan setting is psuedo Globe Theater. It looks Shakesperean. Taddei appears as slightly down on his luck former man of some repute. He is overweight and he's getting on in years but he's still a formitable human being. Terfel on the otherhand is shown in an over the top fat suit. He would weigh at least 400 lbs if all that were really flesh. Furthermore he seems to have a skin disease. He is not just unattractive, he's grotesque. To look that extreme makes it hard to understand why Alice and Meg are initially flattered by his letters. It would be like getting an unsoliticited love letter from the Elephant Man.
The young tenor(Tarver) on this set sings very, very well but I'm afraid he's black. His race is just another element that contributes to the unreality of the performance. Maybe that's unfair, the sets make no effort to place this piece in Elizabethan times although the costume do. It is all rather surreal. So are we to accept that a black man running around in seventeenth century London would provoke no comment. But if that's so why did Shakespear make such a fuss over Othello?
Tarver does sing better than Araiza (another surprise) but Araiza's performance comes off better probably because of the conducting and the staging.
Christa Ludwig is a major disappointment in the Von Karajan set. She is after all a rather high mezzo who has had a lot of success in soprano territory. In Falstaff, Mrs. Quickly is the bottom voice. Ludwig is simply too light. Her voice does not contrast with that of the Meg Trudeleise Schmidt. Meg is a mezzo role and Quickly is better done by more of a contralto. Bernadette Manca di Nissa in this the Haitink set is much better.
The Von Karajan set has wonderful comprimario tenors - Heinz Zednik and Piero De Palma. It also has Frederico Davia, who is perfect in the part of Pistola although Gwynne Howell actually sings Pistola better in the Haitink set.
The main controversy over this production is Falstaff's giant erection that seems to gained the DVD an 'R' rating. That didn't bother me so much - in fact its an Elizabethan sensibility. I was more concerned with the sense of unreality lent by the sets and staging. Falstaff in Henry the Fourth Parts One and Two is a true tragic figure. In The Merry Wives of Windsor he is much less deep but still he must be sympathetic or nothing means much. In this the Haitink-Terfel performance Falstaff is just a grotesque buffoon. The more traditional Von Karajan-Taddei set is often less well sung (again to my surprise) but it is always more affecting.』
(Verdi without fear) 『Falstaff is G. Verdi's hardest nut to crack. The main reason is a noticeable lack of long flowing melodies and arias commonly present in Italian opera tradition. Another is that, more than any other operas, the theater is as essential as the music.
This BBC presentation is a true marvel. It is a feast for the eyes. The young cast can sing and act. The stage direction is flawless, capturing the energy and humor of the piece. If you are curious but hesitant about Falstaff, give this DVD a try.』
(When you're in the right mood...) 『Is the other reviewer serious about the "R" rating in the USA? In Australia this film has been rated PG - which means children can watch it but it is recommended that parents guide them. That's the same rating as "Home Alone" and other such innocuous Hollywood comedies. Weird.
Anyway, this production certainly is colorful. In the right mood I find it a riot. In the wrong mood I find it unsubtle and overdone, even gauche.
But Terfel's Falstaff is tremendous in spite of absurdly unrealistic stomach padding. Frittoli's Alice is beautifully sung and acted, and Mistress Quickly's motif was still impressed on my mind the day after watching it, such is Bernadette Manca di Nissa's fruity tone.
Fenton (Kenneth Tarver) and Nannetta (Desiree Rancatore) make an enchanting pair physically and vocally, flirting with the kind of extrovert style encouraged by the production.
I've never heard anything badly done by Haitink - he is a reliably excellent conductor and this is no exception. The Covent Garden orchestra articulate the shifting motifs of Verdi's score splendidly.
In the right mood, a very enjoyable night at the opera.』
(R rating says it all) 『Honestly I didn't think you needed to look at the parental guidance rating of an opera. I'm sure Verdi would have been "proud". Luckily I took it out of the library and didn't buy it. Since there are so few opera DVD's and so many other oppurtunities to see lewd behavior on the screen, I hope the opera DVD producers will produce more traditional approaches for old "stick in the muds" like me. Also other BBC productions have had suggestive or violent approaches in other operas. I probably won't view any more of their productions.』 『The spectacular opening of London's newly restored Royal Opera House brings a riot of color to Verdi's great Shakespearean masterpiece. Bryn Terfel as Sir John Falstaff and Barbara Frittoli as Alice Ford lead a star cast with the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House under the direction of Bernard Haitink, in a spectacular new production by Graham Vick with vibrant medieval designs by Paul Brown.』

I've been involved in a lot of artsy craftsy stuff as an adult but was afraid to paint on canvas again, even though I really wanted to because as a child I painted all the time. This series gave me a starting point and there's no turning back now. If you are already painting I would not recommend buying these. But following along with Frank's instructions as he paints made it easy for me to get several very basic acrylic paintings finished in about one hour and a half for each one (even though each lesson is only half an hour, I had to rewind a lot, which is why having the DVDs is so great). I now own four of the DVDs in this introductory series (a total of seven lessons) and after watching each one many times I now feel like Frank Clarke is an old friend. His enthusiasm for painting is contagious.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Etta Burns!!!) 『After more than 40 years, Etta still delivers a great performance. This DVD shows why she's in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame. The great singers, the great performers, can deliver raw, live performances without all the hype, pomp and circumstance. They don't rely on the takes and re-takes; the cuts and re-cuts.
This DVD proves Etta's a time-tested, star singer and performer. And she doesn't take a break during this performance. She delivers for 90 straight minutes! Sure she sits, but so what. You can still see and feel her rhythm; she never misses a beat as she rocks, and rocks, and rocks.
You believe Etta when she declares, "Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home". She relives her yesterday in "I Was Born To Be Wild".
And she involves her audience as they join her in song. Listen to her and watch her interact with them (and direct her band)in 'Your Real Good Thing'. Her subtle hand, head, and body motions come together as a maestro in this composition. She directs the band to "bring it on up, bring it on up a littler higher". Though she's in command, she never fails to thank and compliment the audience.
And then there's 'Rock Me Baby', followed by 'Love and Happiness', and 'Take Me To the River', which Etta smoothly transitions to 'My Funny Valentine'. What a masterpiece!
Finally, 'Sugar On The Floor' brings it all home. After more than 40 years in the bizmo, Etta is still not afraid nor ashamed to show emotion.
Great DVD!!!!! 』
(Etta) 『This was purchased for a friends birthday, the review i got from them was it was pretty good, but they exspected a little more. (from her)』
(This set is scorching all the way!) 『Etta James has expanded her boundaries during the last several years, incorporating more sophisticated and lavish productions, particularly with her jazz and gospel recordings. Despite the forays into other musical genres (where she is imminently competent), her rockin' blues songs on this live set are incredibly soulful and arguably represent the peak of her achievements since her Chess and Cadet days in the '60s. Do yourself a favor and get this set on dvd or cd, and also get her blistering set from 1963, "Etta James Rocks the House". Then you'll have 2 remarkable shows bookending 40 years of the ongoing career of the real Queen of Soul.』
(NOT EXACTLY BURNIN' DOWN THE HOUSE) 『Being a long time Etta James fan, I leaped upon this DVD when it was first released to own an actual live concert of the legendary artist. It was not what I expected. Burnin' down the house this ain't! I found a lot of the songs offered were mediocre at best. Gone were the classic growls that this awesome lady usually delivers. Being in her 60's I guess has stifled some of her voice, I dunno, but this is bland. She sits the entire program and at the outset I thought this is gonna make me sorry I invested in this DVD. For all her ups and downs, I feel this is a poor initial gift to her many fans. This concert is a yawner!』
(A Living Legend !) 『Etta James has had a long, distinguished career in music, which is reflected in the 90-minute concert now available on this DVD. In front of an enthusiastic audience, she delivers 15 songs in her trade-mark, tough and tender, take-no-prisoners style that puts her up with the elite artists of our time. The songs cover blues, soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, funk and even some flat-out rock--Etta handles sensitive ballads and raucus ravers with equal emotion and heart. Although seated throughout the concert, she knows how to connect with an audience.
She is backed by The Roots Band, a large group of talented musicians, that includes two of Etta's sons. I guess talent can be hereditary ! The set includes Etta's most famous song, "At Last", which still retains its magic after so many years--but there are other highlights too--" I Just Want To Make Love To You ", "Breaking Up Somebody's Home"' "I'd Rather Go Blind", even "Born To Be Wild"--also I'm betting that her rendition of "Love and Happiness/Take Me To The River" would bring a smile to the Reverend Al Green's face !
The technical quality of the DVD is good, but not perfect. The picture occasionally seems a bit hazy--the sound perhaps not as sharp as it should be. At the same time, it adds to the atmosphere of the event--an R&B concert in a blues club is not a Mozart quartet recital ! This music is supposed to be a little rough around the edges.
When you are thinking of the great "ladies of song"--Bessie, Billie, Ella, Sarah, Dinah, Aretha--don't forget Etta--she belongs !』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Great workout for your home theater ...) 『If you love all types of music, you should get to know Evelyn Glennie. For the last 15 years or so, she has stood alone as THE world-class "percussion soloist," earning her living touring the great symponic orchestras of the world.
In this beautifully recorded concert, performed live with the symphonic orchestra of Luxembourg, she lovingly attacks three pieces: a symphonic work featuring the snare drum (too bad Buddy Rich hasn't been around to appreciate her virtuousity), a six-part modernist solo on the marimba, and a Glennie-transcribed Vivaldi piece originally written for piccolo and recorder but performed onstage on a vibraphone. A fourth piece, a Beethoven overture, is included as an opener, preceding Glennie's appearance onstage.
For my money, the marimba piece is a complete stunner. The instrument has the most beautiful tonality, and is made to literally "speak" under Glennie's mallet work. Each of the six parts has a distinct personality, speaking to a different segment of the musical spectrum.
The Vivaldi piece is beautiful, too. Glennie's perfectionism is evident as she blends her vibraphone playing seamlessly with a small string orchestra that includes a harpsichord. Her rapid-fire mallet work turns incredibly expressive at all the right moments. She must love what she does.
The recording, both video and audio, is flawless in its quality. The DTS and 5.1 sound help make it so, but the on-site recording staff clearly knew their stuff regarding microphone and camera placement and large hall sound levels to get everything right (a bonus feature shows Glennie and the orchestra in rehearsals, but sound levels in the bonus are over-driven, indicating that the audio levels were pre-set for a hall with audience present). Anyway, everything looked and sounded great on my home theater rig. Turn it up -- the neighbors won't mind!
Oh, yeah. What was the Beethoven connection with the opeining number for an Evelyn Glennie concert? Both Ludwig and Evelyn share profound deafness. That fact makes this and every Evelyn Glennie performance all the more astounding.』
(Enjoyable Percussion Concert...) 『I'm enjoying this dvd quite a bit. Since I bought this a few months ago, I have watched it many times. This is a rare dvd with which you can appreciate percussion music in a live concert. Evelyn Glennie, a world-famous Scottish percussionist, provides a wonderful time with her outstanding talent. She plays snare drum, marimba, and vibraphone for "Konzertstuck for snare drum and orchestra" (Masson), "6 miniatures for marimba dolo" (Schnitt), and "Concerto in C major" (Vivaldi). My favorite is her Vivaldi. She arranged the original piccolo concerto for vibraphone and orchestra. The orchestra plays Beethoven's overture "Leonore III" at the beginning.
The sound (DTS 5.1, DD 5.1&PCM) and vision is great with 16x9 enhanced widescreen. You will like this dvd if you are a music lover who is ready to meet any style of music.
