Consisting at this point of saxaphonists Eric Person (heard on soprano and alto) and Zane Massey (on soprano and tenor), guitarists Cary DeNegris and Masujaa, and bassist John Moody, the band cooks, driven by some of the most inspired drumming of Jackson's career.
The music, by and large, is exploratory variants of Ornette Colemans' Prime Time sound-- it's clear that Jackson was reaching for a new sound to accompany his music-- the record pushes in many directions, with superb playing throughout. Particular highlights include the groaning, lurching theme of "When Colors Play", explosive alto soloing on the harmolodically-infused chugging "Good Omens" courtesy of Eric Person, and a fierce guitar solo on "March of the Pink Wallflowers" that recalls both former Decoding Society guitarist Vernon Reid and master Sonny Sharrock. But the album really comes to a head on the bluesy, slowly building "Blue Midnight", with an almost lazy theme statement that explodes into a soprano sax duet with Jackson fiercely restrained. Stunning stuff.
Anyone open to electric free jazz should have this album, pure and simple. Highly recommended.』
(Decoding Society Live at the Caravan of Dreams) 『The Decoding Society, led by drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson, represents one of the high points of electric jazz. Mr. Jackson is a brilliant and powerfully rhythmic drummer, a composer of note, and a superb leader. Unlike most drummer-leaders, Mr. Jackson rarely solos, relying instead on talented sidemen, in this case the twin guitars of Cary Denigris and Masujaa, and saxophonists Eric Person and Zane Masssey (with John Moody on bass guitar). This recording is one of the best in the Decoding Society's discography, featuring a series of highly memorable compositions, strong group interaction, and first rate soloists. It was recorded September 12 and 13, 1986, live at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, Texas.』
IPhone 3G used's review (Yum.) 『I have had the pleasure of knowing this band for about a year now, and I must say, they are a wonderful escape from all the teenybopper garbage and metal that dominates the music industry these days. If you are looking for some good, non cookie-cutter music, then this record is well worth looking into. ....』
(Alternative rules) 『i first listened to this band on riffage.com and bought their cd. i becam freinds with them and their freakin awesome. riffage shut down but i sitll have their cd and talk to them. this is great alternative music, and gets into you. check these guys out cause they rule ass.』
(Refreshing creativity.....................) 『This band captures the hearts and souls of East Central NJ's disenchanted working class youth. The urban sprawl and over development of New Jersey's Parkway towns has spawned a refreshingly original sound. The tone is that of Kurt Cobain meets The Who's "Were not gonna take it!" In these days of White Collared Phoney Rappers and White Soul Robot Boy Toy Groups it's great to hear a group who speaks whats on their minds and in their hearts. Better get on board before your shelling out $50.00 to hear them from the mezzanine.
- Peace』
(Song writing brilliance! ....................) 『I have been kicking around the NJ music scene for 20 years now. Dom Carino's abillity to speak from the heart is a refreshing change from the other thousands of wanna be NJ bands. Too many NJ gigs trade distorted , overdriven guitar licks and middleclass attempts at hip hop licks for true and original music from their own environments and life experiences. Red Engine is the embodiment of industrialized and over developed Central Jersey. Their guitar licks are improvisational and from so deep in the gut that they could be plucking their own intestines. Red Engine Nine is at the station, get on board and get ready for the ride into the souls of New Jerseys disenchanted youth because before long you'll be shelling out $50.00 to see them from the Mezzanine.

I highly recommend!!』 『This easy beginner's lesson teaches you everything needed to start making music on any 20 to 30 key concertina. Using his custom Anglo C&G concertina, John Williams explains all the basics: how to hold the instrument; how to get the most power out of your bellows; and how to use the buttons and the versatile C and G scales. Follow along with John as he explains slowed-down, then up-to-speed versions of each tune in split-screen detail. Before you know it, you'll be playing the familiar Irish children's song, "Oró (Sé Do Bheatha Bhaile)!"
The stereo effect of producing two simultaneous tones (muffled and clear) and of double-octave style playing are both essential techniques. John uses them--as well as the legato capabilities of cross-fingering and a focus on bellows work--to illustrate that developing various skills makes it possible to play one melody in several different ways.
The catchy "Jimmy Ward's Jig" provides a great opportunity to use the air button, master the alternate C pattern, and begin to add a few simple ornaments. Switching to another concertina, John examines the popular session tune "Kesh Jig," using it to introduce new buttons and give advice for better tone production.
John teaches chords, triplets, pick-up notes and more ornaments, then illustrates the common practice of playing jigs in sequence. When his note-for-note breakdown of "Bobby's Casey's Jig" (in A minor) is complete, John performs this string of jigs so you can hear how they sound together at a moderate pace. He completes this thorough concertina overview with a rousing reel, "Last Night's Fun," which introduces additional notes used when playing in the key of D.
As you work your way through this Irish concertina lesson, John shows you how to deliver a tune with good volume, clarity, snap and rhythm. Before long, you'll be ready to lead your own dance sets on this wonderful traditional instrument!』
IPhone 3G used's review (best of colors) 『This is by far the best of everything LC made, written and sung. This being a live cd makes you feel like you are there at the show- which is great if you go to the shows or not.』
(If you can't see them live, this is the next best thing!) 『I first heard of Laughing Colors in while living in Annapolis (1991-1994). I was walking by Armidillo's in Annapolis and heard a sound that I had to see. Between, sets I met and spoke to Dave and knew that this would be a band to see, and I did at every chance I could. The first song I can remember being special to me is "Sunrise Highway", and when I moved back to Michigan, I got a job at a radio station and began to play the band's tape. I later recieved a copy of the CD "What's So Funny" in the fall of 1994 and began playing it on my radio show. If you can't see them live, this is the next best thing!』 『Laughing Colors displays thier songwriting prowess on this live acoustic CD recorded at the Recher Theatre in Towson, MD, September 24, 1999. The CD spans their entire musical career, including a very early song never before available on CD ("Sunrise Highway") and three brand new tracks ("You and I Are," "Roll Into the Light," "Telluride"). If you want to hear the rockin' side of Laughing Colors, check out their latest studio album,The Pattern Seed, on Fowl Records.』
IPhone 3G used's review ("Pride" - An Essential Compilation) 『Living Colour had their greatest commercial success during 1988 - 91, when they managed to score hit singles, MTV exposure, an opening slot on the Rolling Stones' 1989 "Steel Wheels" tour, and a slot on the first Lollapalooza tour. By the time "Pride" was issued in late 1995, this generous and nicely packaged set didn't even crack the Billboard Top 200. What happened? Like Guns 'n' Roses, LC bridged the late '80s 'hair metal' era and the '90s 'grunge' era. "Pride", with nearly 80 minutes of material, collects highlights from "Vivid" (1988), "Time's Up" (1990), the EP "Biscuits" (1991), and "Stain" (1993) their least commercial album, and the one that saw Doug Wimbish (late of Tackhead and the Sugarhill house band) replace Muzz Skillings on bass. Even if one has the group's four previous albums, "Pride" has much to offer: 4 brand new tracks from a never completed album (recorded at the end of 1994) are all superb, showing the band exploring a more ominous, bass-centered sonic approach with dub influenced textures, for an overall edgier sound - clearly an extension of "Stain", with great riffs and playing, and some of their best ever lyrics. With each release, LC was moving away from their only flaw, the occasional bombast that slightly marred the first two albums. These tracks, taken together, are well worth the discount price of the CD, but there is more: a longer version, and different mix, of "What's Your Favorite Colour" betters the original, and the superb Soulpower Remix of "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" makes for a very refreshing alternative to the version on "Time's Up". The remaining tacks (including a live 'Memories Can't Wait') will be familiar to those who know the band's catalog, but the sequencing of this set is also one of its pleasures. As originally stated, this is a very generous set, way better than the subsequent 'Super Hits' (cheesy!), and as put together by the band, nicely covers the 1988 - 95 period of their career. Too bad we had to wait until 2003 for the reunion!』
(Good and Bad) 『I agree with reviewer sdbaker this compilation does not represent The Stain album (besisdes 'Nothingness' missing 2 or 3 tracks). But its probably good for a singles/top 40 fan. but I'm Glad I bought for the bonus 1994 tracks/alternate versions alone-I think they're worth the price.a jmust have for real Living Colour fans.』
("Great Living Colour Hits (1988 - 1993) on 1 CD") 『This is probably the only Living Colour CD that any true rock fan needs to own. Their 1988 debut "Vivid" is also essential, but only includes a few true hits. "Pride" compiles 17 tracks, ranging from 1988's smash "Cult of Personality", "Pride", "Type", "Solace of You", and "Nothingness" to 1994's "Sacred Ground." A live version of the Talking Heads song, "Memories Can't Wait" is also featured, along with a remix of 1990's "Love Rears it's Ugly Head", and 4 unreleased tracks, that were principally recorded in October of 1994. Vernon Reid is an under-rated guitar god, and his playing is un-parallel to any wannabe in today's world of rock. Pick this disc up, and you will never need to purchase another Living Colour album, unless you want a bootleg of their live show (I have a few of these very rare recordings).』
(incomplete compilation/afterthought of a great band) 『Released in late 1995, after the band disbanded, 'Pride' suffers from an identity crisis likely brought on by fulfilling contractual obligations.
First of all, there are 13 tracks that form a sort of "Best of" compilation of their three records. Predicaably, there are six tracks from their most successful, Grammy-winning debut, 'Vivid' (1988) - the hits "Cult of Personality", "Open Letter to a Landlord", and "Glamour Boys", along with "Funny Vibe", a live version of "Memories Can't Wait", and an extended mix of "What's Your Favorite Color? {Theme Song)". Also included are the hits "Type", "Solace of You", and the remix of "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" from the follow-up, 'Time's Up' (1990). What is grossly underrepresented is their most underrated third record, 'Stain' (1993), as there is only one single, "Nothingness", and a disposable instrumental, "WTFF". The later-era singles "Leave It Alone" and "Auslander" are conspicously nixed for less-memorable album cuts from earlier records, "Time's Up" and "Pride", which hurt the overall quality of this as a compilation.
When Living Colour disbanded, they were also left with four tracks in the mould of their third record, 'Stain' (1993) - "Release the Pressure", "Sacred Ground", "These Are Happy Days", and "Visions" - all of which are included here, but only one of which warrants inclusion on a "Best of" compilation.
A perfect compilation would have included: 1. Cult of Personality 2. Middle Man* 3. Open Letter to a Landlord 4. Funny Vibe 5. Glamour Boys 6. Which Way to America* 7. Elvis Is Dead* 8. Type 9. Should I Stay or Should I Go* 10. Solace of You 11. Love Rears Its Ugly Head 12. Bi* 13. Auslander* 14. Leave It Alone* 15. Nothingness 16. Visions
Sony knew that hardcore fans would buy this record for the last new output of the band, and casual fans would buy it because it has enough of the hits. Unfortunately, it is a poor representation of a great band's work. Fortunately, this will not be their last word (i.e., fast forward to October 2003).』
(these Brothers truly Rock) 『Alot of People are Narrow-Minded when they see a Black Person playing a Guitar&Rocking it&I say go back&do the History of Music you will be in for a Eye Opening awakening.Living Color Bring the Rawness here.Corey Glover is a Strong Singer&Very Underrated. He did what Darrius Rucker the Lead Singer of Hottie&The Blowfish does&Corey has SOul with it."Cult of Personality" was my Highlight back in the day on BET's Video Vibration.I dig Vernon Reid's Attack on the Axe."Type" was my Jam back in 90.in a far world Living Color would still Dominate easily along with the Bus Boys, Fishbone,Brand New Heavies,Mint Condition,&other Acts that had no Limits with there Music.Much Props to Living Color for folliwng the Tradition of P-Funk&Howlin Wolf,Mandril,War,&Robert Johnson,Jimi Hendrix,Ernie Isley,Mother's Finest,&Others Before them&since that showcase so much more than what the Powers that be wanna allow for a Black Artist to be.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Perfect!) 『Theres only one way to discribe this cd. And that is perfect! I bought this cd after I heard a couple of songs on it. I was amazed how he composed his lyrics. I'd recommend this cd to any synthpop fans! Its unbelievable!』
(Intelligent music with feeling) 『I was introduced to Color Theory about six years ago. Since that time, I have kept close tabs on the music of Color Theory. I have always been impressed by the nature of the lyrics. The albums opt to delve into more complex issues than standard pop and do so with eloquent simplicity. The music exudes a great depth of feeling, while still being precise and smartly orchestrated. (I find that frequently, when artists create a deeply meaningful or passionate song, the precision, integrity, and compositional aspects of the music suffer. Color Theory balances a passionate feeling with high musical standards.) And the music is very well composed, produced, and engineered. Color Theory blends strong melodies, full harmonies, sophisticated musical ideas, and solid instrumentation along with pensive and meaningful lyrics to create excellent music.』
(A Melancholy Masterpiece) 『To compare Color Theory with any other synthpop band out there would only mislead you. Listen to the clips and you will see what I mean, it is a sound that is familiar yet undescribable. I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes electronic music with heart. Standout tracks are New Years Day, April's Bonfire and For Good.』
(A synth masterpiece) 『Perfect Tears is a stimulating album from a talented musician. I have never been so moved as deeply as I have while listening to Brian's work. It combines the emotion of Tuesday Song with the brilliance of his powerful new material. I am amazed at the progression of his musical talent. As amazing as his first album Sketches in Grey is, each album has surpassed the splendor of its predecessor. The combination of inspiring lyrics and mesmerizing instrumentation leaves me wanting more when the album ends. I would encourage everyone to check out this synth masterpiece. You will not be disappointed.』
(Finest Synth) 『I'm listening to Synth since I am 15 years old. During that time I recognized that many bands, especially bands from Sweden or Germany tried and still try to copy Depeche Mode in any way. But that is not the way Color Theory (Brian Hazard) makes Synth. Perfect Tears is the best evidence as it includes a wide spectrum of Synth styles. I prefer to listen to the eighties-style songs like April's Bonfire, Guilt Reflected and For Good. In my opinion this songs are highlights at the world-wide Synth-Scene. All songs are made of Synth combined with piano which make the songs smooth and pleasant to listen. But it is not only the music and the piano playing that is great. Brian Hazard also has a fantastic voice and he gave all songs marvelous lyrics. It is not an album for dancefloor but it is suitable for listening during autumn and winter where things run slower and where it is gloomy outside.』 『A soundtrack to the lives of the lovesick.』
