Lara is gorgeous and not your typical classical pianist. But then I listened to the recording and discovered that she's REALLY not your typical classical pianist! A feisty, swinging musician with a mind of her own, she brings a brand new sound to these terrific American classics. I can't recommend this enough.』
(Unusual - I love it!) 『As a piano fan and record collector, I always look for new concepts and presentations. This is a marvelous collection of seldom-heard works that deserve more attention. Miss Downes is a big talent. Bravo!』 『Pianist Lara Downes takes us on a journey through the heart and soul of the USA with American Ballads, as she interprets 20th century works by Barber, Copland, Ives, Thompson and features the world premiere recording of jazz composer/saxophonist Benny Golson's On Gossamer Wings. This collection of solo pieces reflects the influence of popular music on our master composers and captures the essence of the American spirit, brilliantly performed by one of today's remarkable talents.
Lara Downes has attracted attention as one of the most exciting and communicative pianists of today's younger generation. She has been cited by critics for her breathtaking virtuosity and penetrating, sensitive accounts of classical and romantic repertoire. She has been hailed as an artist worthy of placement in the highest rank of classical performers. Since making noteworthy debuts at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Ms. Downes performs regularly throughout Europe and the United States.
Ms. Downes eclectic and engaging programs encompass both the standard repertoire and works by young composers such as Augusta Read Thomas and Stephen Paulus. Her recent projects include a Copland Centennial recital, a recently discovered piano concerto by Clara Schumann, and a four-part recital series entitled This American Century. She recently made the world premiere recording of On Gossamer Wings by legendary jazz composer Benny Golson for the Arkadia/Postcards label.
The eldest of the three musical daughters of a civil-rights attorney mother and a Jamaican biochemist father, Ms. Downes began her piano studies at age five at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. At seven, she composed an opera based on the book Charlotte's Web, which was performed in San Francisco. Home-schooled through high school, Ms. Downes completed her advanced studies under Hans Graf at the Vienna Hochschule and with Rudolf Buchbinder at the Music Academy in Basel. She has received highest honors in the Claude Kahn, Palma d'Oro and Artists International competitions.
Ms. Downes' busy solo and chamber career is strongly impacted by her commitment to expanding and developing new audiences for the arts. She dedicates time during her concert tours to elementary school workshops, and has developed a wide network of community outreach through the University of California at Davis. She is the co-founder and artistic director of Arts Exchange, a project dedicated to building creative partnerships between the visual and performing arts. In her own words: "I'd like to re-define the concert experience, to give it new relevance in our 21st-century world".
Ms. Downes speaks fluent English, Italian, German and French. She lives in Northern California.』

(Ethereal Fusion) 『This a truly unique recording. The soothing traditional-based chants of Primeaux and Mike are complemented by subtle guitars, atmospherics and the touching sound of clay flutes. All in all, a beautiful and respectful showcasing of Primeaux and Mikes harmonized singing.』
IPhone 3G used's review (Superb) 『Those reviews complaining that the tv themes are too short are correct, but most are the original recordings like heard from the shows themselves. If you are looking for or want the full version of these songs, look elsewhere, or maybe try iTunes. Some might be/maybe outdated, so take what you can get at this point in time. Don't worry, be happy! 』
(WARNING: Be sure you get the volume with 65 songs,) 『Although most of the songs on this CD are worth the purchase price, and great memories, the version I received only has 59 songs, not the 65 listed on Amazon.com For the record the missing "Tunes" (Bar code 6 10535-68032 7) are, Stingray, Thunderbirds,Chico and the Man, Tom Jones Show, (Its not unusual) and Happening 68. Not enough to return it, but certainly somthing you should know.
I had purchased the CD for such themes as Emergency, High Chaparral, Night Gallery and Felony squad. I cannot tell after the all the years if these are originals or copies, but they are good enough to bring back memories.
If you are purchasing the CD for liner notes which tell you about the music, forget it. It does list artist for some, Author for some, but the scant notes are a one paragraph note about the show. A bit dissapointing.』
(Where is the disclaimer that these are NOT originals?) 『Most of these are re-renditions of the originals. Many people upon hearing these recordings are going to be very disappointed if they remember the original theme.
This CD deserves zero stars. OR, at least a disclaimer somewhere that these are not original pieces. 』
(Fan-rific!) 『This CD features 65 more theme songs from old TV shows. Most of the best known shows were already featured on previous volumes, so there are many shows here that aren't that well known. So, since there are several themes here for shows I have never seen, it doesn't have as much nostalgia value for me as the older volumes have. However, unlike the earlier albums, which featured rerecordings of most of the themes, almost all of the themes here are the original versions. (The only rerecordings here are "Family Affair", "Let's Make a Deal", "Gentle Ben", "The High Chaparral", "The Big Valley" and "Masterpiece Theatre".) Fans of old TV shows should enjoy this CD.』
("The Men from Shiloh"? Now, that's a rarity!) 『For those that don't know, the last year of NBC's long-running western was reworked becoming "The Men from Shiloh", new ranch owner, a few new faces, and a dynamic theme by Ennio Morricone that replaced the more familiar one by Percy Faith.
If you know that little bit of fluff, as well as remember "This is Tom Jones" or "Judd for the Defense" or "Superchicken", then this is the disc for you.
If you don't, then give it to your 40-something uncle!』
IPhone 3G used's review (The Oak Tree owner gets a Wooded Leg Chop!) 『You know, out of the 3 solo albums MORRIS DAY has, this was the most interesting. Although JIMMY JAM&TERRY LEWIS penned "Fishnet" and "Love Is A Game" from the sophmore "DAYDREAMING", Morris did this album alone without production or music or backing voices by the legendary TIME members!
That is about all the props I can give Mr. DAY. His album is nowhere better than any of THE TIME's four albums. Even JESSE JOHNSON's solos tell MORRIS DAY to "Walk". What gets me the most is "The Oak Tree". "The Bird" (Part 2) as RUN formerly of RUN-DMC would say. Good song to a point but if you're 'ready to debut' you don't go back in TIME to get ahead. High points: "The Color Of Success", a diss to PRINCE. Shocking! Of course PRINCE disses him back on SHEILA E.'s "ROMANCE 1600 LIVE" video with the 'wooded leg' chop! "The Character" is my favorite here. The music is a cross between R&B and new wave, sounds like ANDRE CYMONE. That's the first 3 songs. The other 3...
Well, that's my review. MR. COOL, made his best effort on this album and not the ones after this ("GUARANTEED" is frisbee bait). "THE COLOR OF SUCCESS" shows a man finally breaking out of the kingdom of PRINCE, but to go where?
Also, where is the originally here? 6 songs makes an album? THE TIME's first 3 albums have only 6 songs each album. MORRIS can't escape THE TIME. He keeps on doin' what he and they have done, again.』
(Morris Day Makes Us Party,But Is That It?) 『Morris Day ended his association with The Time after the groups wonderful Ice Cream Castle album and released his solo debut 'The Color Of Success' one year later. On the most superficial level the album is a great party album-you can slap it on,have a great time and think nothing more of it.The problem is the song quality itself. The album is credited as being Written And Arranged By Morris Day,and if that's true it's clear he obviously wasn't in that much creative control of The Time. These songs all go on forever and for the most part try at a very bland caricature of The Time's sound; The Time were fun,but one main reason for that was the fact that the musicians had such great chemistry and Morris's braggadoccio and humor glistened right through. In this case none of the songs ever do much FOR Morris;he has to do all the work with his additude holding down the fort and it just isn't a very secure platform.Which is too bad because Greg Phillinganes and Earth,Wind&Fire members Larry Dunn and Roland Bautista participate as musicians.Even the lone ballad "Don't Wait For Me" just meanders on for seven rather pointless minutes. The only truely worthy song on this recording is "Love Addiction" which has a cute melody and is a very catchy pop-funk tune.Other then that unless you want backround music for a dance party then this cruise might be a snooze for you.』
(HE'S JUST COOL!!!!) 『I LOVE THIS ALBUM IT IS COOL IT HAS SOME OF MY FAVORITES BY MORIIS DAY AS A SOLO ARTIST THE COLOR OF SUCCESS, CHARACTER, THE OAK TREE THIS IS A GREAT HAVE AND A MUST HAVE FOR ANY MORRIS DAY FAN. IF YOU LIKE THE TIME THEN I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU TO BUY THIS ALBUM!!!! I AM REALLY SURPRISED HOW GOOD THIS ALBUM IS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DON'T DO VERY WELL BEING A SOLO ARTIST.』
(MORRIS IS THE MAN) 『Wow! This one takes me back. I love "The Oak Tree". No matter what anybody else says, he can still jam on his own without "The Time".This album proves it. After you've heard it you too will be doing "The Oak Tree". Go get 'em Morris.』
(He needs the Time....) 『This is a marginal effort. Many of the songs just sound too similar to each other, and Morris shows very little of the creativity that drew us to the Time. His vocals are as solid as he can get (considering he can't really sing), but the music is terrible.
IPhone 3G used's review (This man is AMAZING!!!) 『I have had the benefit of seeing him perform with as well as without the New World Renaissance band, and all I can say is; he's -enchanting!!- I have all of his CDs and just cannot get enough of his beautiful voice, skillful pronunciation of ancient dialects, and inspired, emotional renditions of pieces that I never would have known existed without is engrossing song. His artistry and musicianship are impeccable, and he puts his soul into every word. You'll feel it even if you don't speak the language or know the lyrics- he'll capture your heart and imagination too! Take a listen!! :D』
(One of the Best of the Renaissance Faire Performers) 『I have to admit I have a real weakness for Owain Phyfe. From the first time I heard him sing at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire I knew I had to own every CD that he put out. He carefully researchs and finds music of the era and then his beautiful voice and his friends musical talents go to work. Any one who enjoys folk, classical voice or just really great singing will love this album.』
(Indescribably soothing and beautiful) 『This c.d. is a collection of lovely songs in a variety of languages. Owain Phyfe's voice moves effortlessly over the lyrics, accompanied by skilled instrumental musicians. I had the opportunity to see this man live at a renaissance faire, and it was an unbelievable experience. He's one of the few performers who sounds as good live (if not better) as he does on c.d. His voice is ethereally beautiful!!! I recommend all four of his c.d.'s. When I saw him live, I got to pick the language for one of his songs...I chose Latin, and he proceeded to sing a gorgeous, haunting tune from the "Odyssey" c.d.』
(A pleasant reprieve from the cares of the everyday world.) 『I have turned to this melodious CD many times to find a pleasant reprieve from the cares of the everyday world. Open the CD, note the stylized Tudor Rose which epitomizes the music of this very gifted group. You easily see that something old and familiar has been transformed into a fresh creation, yet remains faithful to its origins. The album contains several songs by popular Elizabethan composers John Dowland and Thomas Campion. Dowland has been praised for his "heavenly touch upon the lute", and these talented musicians are surely no less divine.』

I did like "andmoreagain" and a few others had a nice beat. I found this to be one more CD where a one hit wonder (she comes in colors) led me to believe that maybe I would find something more on the CD. Would I buy it again knowing what I know now - yes. It was worth buying just for listening even if I didn't find anything else to compare to "she comes in colors".』
(Songs to love!) 『The best by one of the best bands of the sixties... four songs from their absolute masterpiece "Forever changes" and other lovely psychedelic gems... Dream on with "Andmoreagain"...!!!』 『Digitally remastered anthology of the Arthur Lee fronted band's best from the Warner/Elektra music archives, with 14 standout tracks including 'Hey Joe', 'Seven&Seven Is', 'My Little Red Book', 'Orange Skies' and many more. Wea. 2005.』
