IPhone 3G used's review (Collector's items) 『The Tomb Raider franchise has had its ups and downs, so the three forays onto the miniscule Game Boy proscenium are understandably received with eyebrow raised. The first Tomb Raider for Game Boy Color (simply called Tomb Raider) was an immense surprise, since I did not expect to see Lara Croft rendered in such convincing animation. Reviewers seem to give that game high marks, and I have to agree - the game is playable, and actually fun. Then this one, Curse of the Sword, comes along. The animations are nearly as well done as the original, but seem slightly stodgy, as though some of the subtlety has been dropped out in favor of clarity. GBC TR1 sometimes hides items behind the scenery, making them hard to see; GBC TR2 actually blinks the medipaks and other items with a white flash, making cognitive skills hardwon in the first game unnecessary in the second. But what is done well, is done well. By contrast, the Game Boy Advance offering in the series, Prophecy, has bad graphics - Lara Croft is a cartoon who runs like a dork, with unvarying 90 degree leg bends like a swastika. The GBA character is not Lara, but an idea of Lara utterly lacking charm or nuance. The GBC characters, by contrast, transcend their tiny frames with brilliantly conceived animations that actually suggest a human being, or at the very least, the Playstation or Macintosh Lara viewed small. These are all collector's items.』
(Excellent game) 『I found this game to be almost as enjoyable as the first Tomb Raider game for Gameboy Colour. The action was plentiful, and there were some interesting puzzles to work through in the process of getting through the game. I have only given it three stars though for two particular reasons. Firstly, I found it irritating that little prompts kept popping up throughout the game whenever Lara approached an item or a doorway. Perhaps others have found this helpful - I expect it would be to anyone for whom this was their first experience with a Tomb Raider game. Secondly, and most major: I encountered a major glitch during the sequence when Lara was on the speeding train. Once the train started moving, and Lara begins making her way to the front, you will come across a save diamond. I used this the first time I played the game, and when I had to restart the game due to crashing and burning (I think I actually decapitated Lara that time round), I discovered the graphics were all warped. I don't mean that they were illegible. The graphics appear normal - until Lara starts running across empty spaces, and falls through holes where there doesn't appear to be any holes. You jump her across what you think is the gap between carriages, only to have her fall through an apparently non-existent hole and die. No matter what I did I could not fix the problem, and I could not reach the front of the train to complete the sequence. Ultimately I had to start over from the beginning again. I don't know if anyone else has encountered this problem, but to play it safe, use the last available save diamond before talking to the old man and getting on the train. Do not use the diamond that is on the train itself. That aside, there is a wonderful assortment of scenery in the game. It starts off in a museum, which Lara must escape from in order to pursue the thieves. From there, after 'defeating' a mini boss on the rooftops of New York, she must negotiate an underground maze of rail tunnels, and then make her way through two hazardous warehouses on the wharf, find her way into an underwater lab filled with zombies and collect and charge all the batteries she needs to operate a mini-sub, which she must negotiate through a dangerous maze underwater. (Hint, save as many of your health packs as you can for this part - you're going to need them) From this last section, you will jump to the last scenes of the game, set on a distant island. Some may feel that the final boss is something of a let down compared to the rest of the game, but it all depends on your point of view. It was extraordinarily easy to defeat the boss, but the real fun was in getting to that final battle, not in the battle itself.』
(Tomb Raider) 『This is one of my favorite games. You start out trying to get from room to room, looking for your gun. There's limited places to go without your gun, because you are not able to get buy the police. This game is perfect with the difficulty levels-they are not to hard and not to easy. I highly recommend this game.』
(Good game!) 『There should be more games like this, what would be great is if they improved the graphics and made it for GBA. I actually got this when I got my GBA. It is really fun, and not too hard to figure out. This is especially recommended to any Tomb Raider fans. Plus, I got this for a pretty good price. Pros: 1) Pretty good price (used anyway) 2) Lots of puzzles, not to easy nor to hard to figure out 3) People with GBC still can play it 4) Fairly good graphics Cons: 1) Some controls are difficult 2) Only one slot for one saved game 3) Some people may get bored early in the game』
(The Real Cuse of the Sword) 『This game is better than some people give it credit for... The only thing that isn't that great is that there is NO BACKGROUND MUSIC! Everything else rules! Personally I find the level RUNAWAY TRAIN the best.』
IPhone 3G used's review (STILL a classic game by today's standards!) 『Even though I like the more "modern" Nintendo games (for the DS in particular), Yoshi's Island stands out in the crowd as one game that you can play and enjoy. The colorful graphics and catchy music will have you playing "just one more" game before powering down for the evening. I had the opportunity to pick this game up again, and I am now glad that I did. It has all the pastel colors that lured me to it in the first place, and very responsive controls as well. Here's a breakdown below:
I could find no real faults for this game, as it can be picked up by anyone and played. The bonus Mario Bros. game is a welcome addition to those that have played this before, and might attract new gamers as well. It's reasonably priced, and could round out your DS library nicely. Enjoy an old classic today.』
(Beautiful, simply beuatiful...Everthing about it sparks with glory...) 『This game was the sequel to the most popular Super Mario World in the 1990's for the SNES, and is a platformer as is its predecessor, and not only that, it explains how Mario came to be. When the kind stork was carrying two baby orphans, Mario and Luigi, to their parents, flying across Yoshi's island, home to all Yoshis, it was assaulted by Kamek, the Koopa/Witch who worked for a little dragon named Bowser. She managed to snatch one baby, but the other, fell straight down onto Yoshis Island, and fell on one Yoshi's back, along with a map that the stork was using of Yoshi's island. It was decided that several yoshis of different colors were to see where the map led, maybe to find Luigi, Mario's brother, and stop Bowser's plan. So came super Mario world 2: Yoshi's island for the SNES. The game sold well, and got the right to be remade for the GBA, with several advancements. Now that you know the game's history and the plot, we should probably move on to the gameplay of Yoshi's island. You play as yoshi, with baby Mario riding on your back. Baby Mario hardly serves any purpose at all; in fact, it would probably make more sense on Yoshi's part to leave baby Mario behind with the Yoshi's that stayed behind. Now then, Yoshi's moves consist of: A: Jumping. Useful for defeating certain enemies you may land on and jumping over hills and obstacles. Also, if you press A in the air, yoshi will elevate slightly higher. B: Makes yoshi stick his long, stick-like tongue out. His tongue can put certain enemies in his mouth, and you can press B again to spit them out. D-pad controls: D-Pad Up: Makes yoshi look up, and makes the screen camera move slightly up to see what's above you. Also, when yoshi is looking up, if you stick his tongue out, it will go up instead of right/left. D-Pad down: makes yoshi duck, making the camera move slightly down, and occasionally avoiding enemies. If you have an enemy in your mouth, you can swallow it with this button. Also, while in the air, by pressing down, Yoshi will do a flip and point his butt at the ground, then very quickly slamming the ground; this attack is more powerful then jumping. D-Pad Left/Right: Using left will make you run to the left, and right will make you move to the right. Applying a gentle push will make Yoshi walk, and pushing on them harder will make him almost immediately run. To make him immediately run, you must hold down B. R: Most enemies will turn into eggs and follow yoshi wherever he goes when yoshi swallows an enemy. By pressing R, yoshi will pick up the egg, and a red X will be going up and down. You can choose the way you want yoshi to throw the egg; the first way is just by pressing R and than pressing it again to throw the egg; the second way is to hold down R, and once it is released, yoshi will throw the egg in the direction of the red X. As you can see, this targeting system takes good timing, but it's actually quite easy to get used to. Now there are many enemies in Yoshi's island, of many shapes and sizes, that, if touched, will make Yoshi flinch back, and cause baby Mario to go off of Yoshi's back. Mario will be enveloped by a small bubble, and a meter of 10 seconds will appear. If yoshi does not touch the bubble in 10 seconds, Kamek's minions will fly down and take baby Mario away. Across levels, there will be glittering rings that yoshi can continue from if this happens or if he falls down a pit. Many enemies in this game include shy guys, which are basically red boxes with, white, circular masks with black, circular holes for the eyes and mouth. Others include small, blue, bats with orange wings that swoop down on yoshi, or bandits that try to grab Mario and steal him away. Now that you know a little bit about the gameplay, it's time to move onto the graphics, which I was truly impressed by. The background is almost full 3D, and the land that yoshi can walk on is beautiful and full of colors; some of these look like giant, 3D, clouds that were painted all sorts of pretty colors and placed flowers upon, others look like hundreds and hundreds of black and blue shiny gems, these floors and platforms are in underground caves. There are many floors beside that, I just named a few. Also, stones in castles look very nice and realistic. Yoshi and enemies have bright, colors, and many more things will also look very beautiful. All in all for the graphics, Yoshi's island is defiantly on of the best-looking GBA and SNES games around. The music in the game is...simply amazing. It 100% captures the feel and setting for each level in such a good way, that it seems indescribable. Some levels will have the calm tune, where many will have his jazzy one which I will never forget. The cave and castle music are just so awesome unforgettable. This game has some of the best music you'll ever find for its era. Many small clouds with wings will also be floating around levels, and if hit by an egg, may give you stars, which increase your seconds until Mario is taken away (the glittery rings I mentioned before will also do this), circular coins, and if 100 are obtained, an extra life will be gotten until game over, game over really doesn't do anything except reset those glittery rings, because whenever you defeat a level anew or replayed, the game saves automatically. These clouds may also contain other surprises like making a staircase in a level. There are also several minigames to be played in which prizes will be obtained throughout levels, a good example is giving you the maximum eggs that can follow you. You can access these items by pressing select. Now, one thing I forgot to mention was the world map. A map will appear whenever you start your file (there are 3 in all and can be erased or copied) that shows yoshi, awesome graphics and landscapes, and 6 numbers for six worlds. You may use the D-Pad to select a word and press A to go into it, in which two castles which inhabit bosses at the end, and several other levels will appear. Unfortunately, unlike super Mario world, there will be boxes and a pointer to enter levels, instead of a map that you can walk all over. When on the box select screen, you can easily switch to other boxes from the other world without going back to the map screen. One of the best things about this game is the replay value. Every single level in the game is repayable, and I find myself constantly playing these levels, over again, just for the fun and thrill of it. All in all, this game deserves my 10 for such a game that...that...Well it's just such a masterpiece... A must buy for any Nintendo fan. Not to mention it comes with the arcade Mario Bros., upgraded to sprites from the original super Mario advance, or super Mario bros. 2. So it's a masterpiece, a must-buy.』
(Yoshi's island is FUNNER than super mario bros.3) 『Since this game is FUNNER than super mario bros.3 as you see in my title I played it more times too. And so if you get both you might play it more too. So try not to get super mario bros.3 okay? (-:』
(YOSHI ROCKS) 『Cant go wrong with this game. Yoshi is one of our favorite Nintendo characters and the game has alot of action. An adult may actually enjoy this game.』
(Yoshi's Island is a great game) 『We purchased this game for my son(who is 10) and he really likes it. I asked him to tell me what he enjoys about it since I have never played the game myself. I figured the opinion of the 10-year-old player would be more useful. He gave it the 5-star rating. He says "It is cool that you can morph into different things and it has lots of different levels to play on." He also likes the "storyline" or "plot" of the adventure since Yoshi is one of his favorite characters. I can tell you that it IS NOT a game he played for 10 minutes and got bored with. He has continued to enjoy it very often.』 『Yoshi's Island: Super Mario 3 puts you in control of Yoshi for his wildest new adventure! You can even connect with three friends in a multi-player game of Mario Bros.』 『Oh no! It looks like your granddad was right--things really were better in the old days. At least they were if you liked 2-D platform games, andYoshi’s Islandis indisputably one of the best ever made.
Yoshi’s Islandgoes back in time to recount the touching story of the various Yoshis' attempts to unite Baby Mario with his parents. You don’t actually control the Italian plumber-to-be but instead his dinosaur pal, who has the curious ability to eat his enemies and then immediately turn them into eggs, which he can then fling at more enemies.
Since Yoshi isn’t particularly fast and can float in midair for a few seconds after making a jump, the whole dynamics of the normal Mario gameplay have changed, but the same incredible attention to detail and endless imagination that mark all of Nintendo’s best efforts are still here in full effect. In fact they’re joined this time, after the rather plain-looking prequel, by some wonderful pastel-shaded graphics that were jaw-dropping when the game was originally released in 1995 and still manage to impress now.
As with the otherSuper Mario Advancetitles, this game also contains a four-player version of the originalMario Bros.arcade game, making it even more of a bargain than it already was.--David Jenkins, Amazon.co.uk』

IPhone 3G used's review (Great gameplay) 『The gameplay in Yars Revenge is addicting, fast paced, and very fun. This Game Boy Color version is much better then the version bundled on the Game Boy Advange with Pong and Asteroids. I know this because I had originally bought Yars Revenge for Game Boy Color used for about 2 bucks. At first, I could't figure out what to do in the game and didn't understand the goal. After I got the hang of this game I was HOOKED!!! It was the best 2 bucks I ever spent. Then, one day I popped the cartrige into my system, and it wouldn't fire up. Attempt after attempt to boot the game up failed: the game had inexplicably stopped working! I had played the game without a problem earlier in the day, too. So, since it broke I thought I'd buy the GBA version....wow, what a rip-off. For 15 bucks I got a slow paced, lower-rez graphics (yes) and much worse version of the game. Don't get me wrong, Asteroids and Pong are allright, but with no high score saves this compilation is lacking. Since the GBA Yars was such a dissapointment I hopped onto Amazon and once again purchased one of the most fun arcade style games EVER: Yars Revenge.
The storyline and main character in this game are very odd and unique. I won't spoil them for you. If you haven't heared of this game already and like arcade games or addicting games, this is a MUST BUY!!! The only downfall is that it won't work on your DS, so you have to bust out a GBA, GBC or original Game Boy to play it! And yes, this Game Boy Color software is backwards compatible with the ORIGINAL Game Boy hardware! How cool is that? I'd love to play this game on an original GB, too bad mine is gone for good :(』
(Just as I remembered it!) 『This one's a classic, folks. I don't remember 'Yar's Revenge' being one of the "bigger name" games on Atari. It wasn't a 'Pac Man' or a 'Space Invaders', but it was definately a fun game. I loved it back then and I love it now. The Game Boy port of the title is excellent. The game is just as I remembered it. The only noticable difference is that the playing field is larger than the Game Boy's screen, meaning it will have to scroll in order to get to the other side. This is a minor footnote, however, and is an obstacle that will quickly be overcome. If you loved this game in the 80's and own a game boy, grab it up!』
(Fun!) 『I remember this game from my young teens....it still hasn't changed and is just as much fun as still addicting. The graphics are ok, but for those of us old timers from the Atari 2600 generation, this will feel like putting on a pair of old shoes! Its challenging on a small screen and takes some getting used too. I reccommend this to the 30 something crowd!』
(Great conversion of an old Atari game) 『This is a great conversion of the original Atari 2600 game from 1983. The graphics are better but the same addictive game play is there. And the price is good too for a new GameBoy Color cart. A password system lets you pick up a game where you left off previously rather than starting from scratch.』
(YES!) 『The classic Atari 2600 game, now available on Gameboy! This is an exact conversion (as I recall), with good colors. At last I can beat this game...』 『Anyone who survived the first wave of twitch video games of the '80s will rememberYars' Revenge. It was one of the best and most popular games available for the legendary Atari 2600 console, and many a sore thumb can be attributed to hours in front of the TV battling the evil Qotile Armada. Now a new generation of gamers can see what all the fuss was about withYars' Revengefor the Game Boy.
The premise and gameplay have not changed. You pilot a ship that looks like a housefly, blasting your way through the barrier that shields the Qotile mothership so you can destroy it and progress to the next level. Homing missiles and the Qotile itself hinder your progress and keep you on the move at all times. As the game progresses, the shields become more difficult to penetrate and the obstacles harder to dodge.
That's it.Yars' Revengeis reflex gaming at its most basic level. The graphics stink and the sound effects are laughable, but this isn't the type of game that relies on cutting edge technology to deliver great gameplay. If you prefer more steak than sizzle,Yars' Revengeshould deliver hours of old-school fun.--T. Byrl Baker
