Much of the book is conjecture given the scarcity of primary resources. For the same reason it is not a vivid biography. The book could have been condensed into a chapter length article without losing anything.

(An Inspiring look at a very determined woman) 『As far as I know, this is the only adult biography of Bessie Coleman, the pioneer African-American aviatrix. Rich notes that she was hampered by a lack of personal material, but has none the less produced a fascinating biography. Coleman, a woman of modest background, overcame barriers of wealth, race and gender. A national celebrity, especially among Blacks, she was even able to attract the attention of white Americans. Through her airshows and lectures, and against a great deal of hostility, she was a tireless campaigner for equality for both sex and gender. Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut has written an afterword. For some reason, this is after the notes and bibliography, but before the index.
There are a variety of biographies of Coleman aimed at various ages of children. While reading this, I also read Bessie Coleman; first Black Woman Pilot by Connie Plantz. This is of course the most detailed and contains a considerable amount of historical and contextual information. Both this and Plantz's book are lavishly illustrated, happily with a number of different pictures, and I recommend both to anyone interested in visual information.

"Blood Paths" by Clark Howard. Warden Grant and Teacher Elaine Kenner argue over the job their daughter Susie has taken. The mother wants Susie to be a teacher like her, but Susie is a chip off the old man's block.
"Piranha to Scurfy" by Ruth Rendell. Ambrose Ribbon is a pro at pointing out errors in other people's lives such as writing letters to authors. However, he receives a unique critique from a writer who holds him to his standard of nasty criticism.
"The Lost Boy" by Robert Bernard. Malcolm flees town with his son Randall leaving his wife Selena behind. His nanosecond calls to her only increase her concern for her son, but it appears there is not much she can do unless Selena chooses a drastic route outside the law.
"Out There in the Darkness" by Ed Gorman. The five friends who make up the Midwest neighborhood watch are playing cards when two intruders break into the home. They catch one and kill him, but his friend escaped. One by one he enacts vengeance on the quintet.
These five strong crime thrillers are filled with suspense and surprising endings that explain why the Ellery Queen pack proudly presents them to readers to enjoy.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A Queen Who Reigned Supreme) 『Effa Manley was seemingly yet another "lost" pioneer in Negro Leagues Baseball before being posthumously honored in 2006 with induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. She was part of a class of players and executives selected by a special committee chaired by former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent.
But a plaque for the only woman inducted in the Hall of Fame barely touches the surface of an oftentimes controversial life. Author James Overmyer does an excellent job in piecing together a story that is as interesting as any you will read.
Compared by some as the George Steinbrenner of her day, Effa Manley and her husband, Abe Manley, operated the Brooklyn/Newark Eagles and were major figures in the behind-the-scenes operations of NLB.
She was relentless in her battles with other owners, players and sportswriters to make NLB a viable professional sport and business. Effa Manley was also a civil-rights advocate, who led several successful protests in Harlem for equitable job opportunities at white-owned businesses.
She was also critical of how NLB was beholden to white booking agents - who oftentimes became club investors by advancing struggling team owners money for percentages of ownership - and the white Major League Baseball teams to utilize stadiums.
It was at the height of the Eagles greatest success, a 1946 championship, where even Effa Manley's passion and business acumen could not save the league. During that championship season, Branch Rickey had started a new league to compete against NLB. That league lasted only one year, but it was a major opening move against NLB that presaged the future.
And when MLB - through the Brooklyn Dodgers and Rickey - began to integrate its league through the signing of Jackie Robinson, it opened up a raid on NLB rosters, with the best players being signed to contracts with little or no compensation to the NLB teams.
Though Effa Manley successfully challenged Rickey on his attempt to sign (steal) Monte Irvin, the die had been cast. It was an end of an era when the Manleys divested themselves of the franchise that had mounting financial loses.
The final chapter (Appendix A), Effa's Competition: The Other Owners of Black Teams, is a nice summary of the personalities, egos and conflicts that are comparable with the maneuverings and manipulations within any pro league.
This is a story of triumph, as a woman demanded and grudgingly gained respect in a male-dominated sport, sought through protest equality in a racist-dominated society&worked tirelessly to the end for the recognition NLB truly deserved.

This book gives an insight what the tough challenges the owners faced. Some of the owners of Negro League teams were white just like Effa Manley. That did not help them at all. It is interesting to see her problems because she was also a woman in a man's sport. An excellent read to give you insight on the history of the game.』 『The story of a championship baseball team and an extraordinary woman who make her mark despite gender and race discrimination.』

It's written by a SCHOLAR, yes someone who STUDIED the topic beyond tossing together last year's 101 books and adding some "personal gnosis". She is an actual professor in Ireland and she's a Pagan. She is writing this book for her colleuges, but adding exercises that are amazing at the end each chapter for the Pagans. It's not dumbed down in any way which is so refreshing. She expects that the reader is smart, wants facts, and cares about integrity. PLEASE WRITE MORE BOOKS! The fact that it's never clearly understood just what the Celts had for a moon Goddess was irrelevant - she offered details about the Celtic calender that make a lot of sense, great Indian information that clicked in wonderfully for anyone who has done their Indo-European studies, and millions of other details. This book is worth 100 of the same old same old books being passed off as new. Most Pagan writers have no scholarly experience and can't write a footnote to save their lives - BUY THIS BOOK!』
