(Now we're getting somewhere)
『Disagreeing with most of the other reviewers here, IMO this is the best book of the series so far. Baker's straightforward writing style is a refreshing change that makes the book much quicker and easier to read. Additionally, the addition of Nimor Imphraezl and the Jaezred Chaulssin gives a whole new perspective to the story, making for more of an epic feel, something that was missing from the first two books. Telling the story from Hallistra's perspective sat fine with me, as we get a much better understanding of this character (who is going through some rather drastic changes) in this book. The thing I liked the most about this book, however, was that the reader finally learns so much about the true causes of the drow's troubles.

As Nimor schemes to bring about the downfall of the Lolth-worshiping drow, and Pharaun and Co. travel throughout Faerun to determine the cause of Lolth's silence, momentous events are taking shape that will greatly influence the direction of the story. The Druegar of Gracklstugh and the demons of Kaanyr Vhok plan together to bring about the downfall of Menzoberranzan, fielding a massive army without the knowledge of the drow leadership. The lich lord of Agrach Dyrr (another new character that adds greatly to the book) plots along with them and ends up confronting Gromph Baenre in a fantastic battle. And of course Quenthel and her companions face all manner of adversaries on the surface, in the Underdark, and in more mystical places during their quest.

While there are a number of inconsistencies when compared to the other two books, I didn't find them too distracting, and some of them could be explained by changes within the characters. The one that seemed to upset most of the other reviewers the most, involving the sudden appearance of Jeggred, must have been corrected in the printing I read. Instead, Ryld is asked to carry both Valas and Danifae (which in itself was somewhat inconsistent with the first book).

Overall, this book progresses the overall story to a great degree and is just as enjoyable as the previous two.

(Good story, but suffers slightly in continuity.)
『I had an ok time reading this book. It carried the story along as it should and introduced some intriguing new characters but it didn't follow some of the details from previous books. Most of it I could overlook as the sort of thing one expects when dealing with multiple authors, but one or two changes put my teeth on edge and made me wonder if the author really read the other books fully.

The most notable to me was the fact that in previous books Phaerun was the one to advance and pursue talking to another religious sect in hopes to gain clues to Lolth's disappearance. Valas merely mentioned who they might approach and that he could take them there. In this book the whole party, without build up or warning, turns on Valas as the source of the idea and a potential heretic to boot. Phaerun makes a very weak statement in Valas' defense but behaves entirely as if he never had a part in the plan.

All the characters changed somewhat, most to no detriment. Phaerun changed a little too much for my liking, though. Phaerun of old was a flamboyant, pithy kind of fellow with the most charming sense of when and when not to pick at Quenthel. He's foppish, sophisticated, and extremely self indulgent. He's still fun in this book but he's less flamboyant and more hard edged than expected. Instead of charming he's slightly irritating with occasional bad timing and more folksy dialogue.

There are other inconsistances explored in other reviews but I more blame the editor than the author for continuity. I still recommend picking this book up. One can still enjoy the story as the basic dynamics between all the characters are still in play. New developments are put forth that keep you interested and will be important for later books.』

(A strong entry that is action packed and a MUST read in the series)
『I really enjoyed this book in the series. The previous edition "Insurrection" was pretty good, but left something to be desired to me. While Reid did a good job with drow nature, the book somehow didn't keep me excited, aside from occasional parts. Condemnation seems to have filled that void much better. read on, and don't worry... no spoilers :-)

Richard Baker does a good job continuing the negative banter between Quenthel and Pharaun, although it does seem as if Quenthel loses a lot of her "authority" here. It seems by now, the master of sorcere would have been beaten down! As for the end of this book, it is highly climactic and had me turning pages to see what was going to happen next! Although the result of a big event near the end of the book was somewhat abrupt, you cant expect much different given the circumstances. Without creating a spoiler, I can tell you that the ending is intense and explodes with confrontation and realization.

Bakers writing approach is solid, straight forward and made what I thought to be a pretty easy read with good flow. I can honestly say this book is a must in the series that cannot be skipped by inpatients wanting to jump ahead in the series! There are many events in this book that act as a bridge in the series one would be lost without.

Recommended. better than Insurrection imo and on par with Dissolution, just strong in different ways. I really enjoyed Richard Bakers writing style and will most likely read more of his work in the near future.』

(ok.)
『This is the 1st book I read in the series because of unfortunate circumstances (but I have bought every book in the series). It's a good book, the one thing that I think needed ALLOT more work is describing the action (fighting scenes) it made me conclude that this writer does not have a great sense of imagination when is comes to this category and in a book about dark elves it was very lacking. However I am intrigue to see what the other writers can do.』

(boring and stupid)
『The worst one of the series so far. Doesn't even seem part of the same series. Richard Baker you suck!!』

(A quick, delightful read about a fascinating monarch)
『I recently bought this book for a paper I had to do for school. I had read Polly Schoyer Brooks' book about Joan of Arc last year, and had enjoyed it, so I was hapy to find one on Eleanor of Aqutaine. This book was clear and easy to understand, but explained the fascinating life of Eleanor in detail. Each chapter highlighted a different section of her life, from her childhood in Aqutaine, to her marriages and rules as Queen of France and England, and finally to helping her sons rule as kings of England. I was amazed by her long life in the medieval times. This book is a treasure and one I would read again. I especially enjoyed the references to the King Arthur tales and how Eleanor influenced them as a model for Guinevere!』

(Good Basic Life Of Eleanor)
『Brooks copyrighted this herself in 1983 and, although there is no useful biographic information, I get the impression she wrote it for the k-12 school library market. The book feels like it is written for an 8th grade audience but with an admirable extent to the vocabulary and historical contexts. Brooks has done a good job on relating geography, medieval culture and art, and history in an enjoyable and informative read.

Perhaps I don't understand the prejudices of the school library market, but I do wish that books like this would do some referencing and citations of quoted material to give readers the concept of backing up what is said with authoritative research sources.

This is a good solid introductory book on Eleanor. It is comprehensive (unlike so many of the newer Eleanor books that focus on and tend to glamorize only one part of her life). It presents most of the known historical facts and mentions most of the commonly known myths as well (clearly presenting them as unfounded legend). This is a good place to start if you want an overview of Eleanor's life. It's a quick read for adults and a good comprehensive exploration of a medieval life for an elementary or high school student.』

(Awesome Book!)
『Queen Eleanor is a women who never gives, even in the last few years of her life. She gave birth to two famous kings, King Richard the Lionhearted and King John Lackland. She was married to King Louis and then to King Henry. The story is very well put together and gave the feeling of being at the place where Eleanor was. The book gave a lot of interesing facts but it told a story as well.』

(Do Not Miss This)
『This is a wonderfully written book about one of the most interesting figures in history, Eleanor of Aquatine. From her carefree homeland to dreary England, first and second husbands, Eleanor's charactor shines through every page. I seemed to get to know her as a person, not just some charactor whom the author slaps on a few traits and leaves the "finished product" fuzzy around the edges. Do yourself a favor and buy this book for you, your child, you grandchild, your teacher, your... Well you get the point!!』

(A wonderful presentation)
『Two Thumbs Up = EXCELLENT!!

Sideways Thumb = OK

One Thumb Down = Bad

Two Thumbs Down = TERRIBLE!!

This book was: Two Thumbs Up

Comments: When you think of the average bio you think of DATES DATES AND MORE DATES! And trust me, I cannot STAND DATES! They are too dry and it's not like we're going to remember anyways unless we are overly obsessed freaks. ANYWAYS! To get back to the point: This book was a great presentation of the life of Eleanor of Acquitaine. Why? Well it wasn't too dry. Somehow the author managed to step into Eleanor's character and write from her point of view, yet stay in the third person. It was very detailed. Overall it was an enticing and informative story.』
『Accused of being a demon by those who could not tolerate her independence, Eleanor of Aquitaine made her mark as one of the most dynamic and extraordinary figures of the Middle Ages. Born in 1122, Eleanor refused to be confined by the traditional gender roles of her time. She became well educated, gaining political and governing know-how from her father, William X, duke of Aquitaine, and armed herself with the skills necessary to become an influential queen-first of France, and later, England. With an impact that reached beyond politics, Eleanor shaped the future of the arts and humanities. And in a time when women were viewed as inferior to men, the virtues of chivalry and courtly love were born. Once described by a contemporary as "a woman beyond compare," Eleanor of Aquitaine is a figure who will remain controversial, powerful, and enchanting in the twenty-first century.』

"The ideal reference on Maya archaeology."—Science News

Behind the ancient cities of the Maya and their abandoned artworks lie the turbulent stories of their ruling dynasties. One of the world's greatest and most powerful civilizations, the Maya experienced constant conflict in a landscape divided among numerous kingdoms. Intense rivalries, rapacious conquerors, and repeated dynastic defeat and breakdown are common themes in many tales of this mighty civilization.

The ancient Maya remain one of the most vibrant areas of study in world archaeology. Fresh discoveries in the field, together with the ongoing process of hieroglyphic decipherment, mean that information is constantly coming to light. This new version of the only comprehensive, kingdom-by-kingdom history of the ancient Maya brings the story fully up to date with previously unknown rulers and new glyphic readings, as well as additional information on diplomacy and warfare. 366 illustrations, 86 in color.』

(What grown-up has time for all this drama?)
『I read the book and picked up some good hints for dealing with unfairness and how to handle it if I should have to deal with a rogue coach or something. I guess we've been lucky. With the exception of the fallout of having to deal with one whacked first grade teacher, I have managed to bring kids to the teen/pre-teen years without getting too wrapped up in the drama of the kid who didn't get invited to the Big Party, or the Kid who Spends Too Much Time of the Sidelines or the Mean PTA Lady Who Makes Me Do Scut Work while all her cronies get the plum assignments. In short, I have a life, as do my kids, and they really aren't the same life. But in all our lives, not being invited to every event, or not being the kid with the most playing time on the court, or even being teased for wearing an eye patch are all small bumps in life's journey, not the measure of our self worth.』

(Some people never leave 7th grade behind so how do you cope?)
『I have two elementary-aged girls and bought this book hoping it would help me communicate with other adults in their lives in a productive manner. Mrs. Wiseman injects humor, incorporates real-life stories from parents across the country and provides step by step how-to strategies for dealing with difficult situations. While you might have moved on from 7th grade you will be amazed by the number of folks who have not and these include your children's teachers, coaches, friend's parents, etc. At the very least this book helps you recognize some of the personalities you will encounter.』

(Some of Us Have Left Seventh Grade Behind)
『I am the mother of two first grade children and picked up this book rather reflexively a few weeks ago. I was drawn in by the promise that it would reveal the secrets of all of the weird and labyrinthine social interactions that supposedly plague parents of school-aged kids. I figured it must have something to tell me that I don't already know!

Although I've had my share of questioning my own and other parent's judgement at various moments throughout my children's school experiences (so far preschool through first grade) -- I find that my live-and-learn attitude, and my sense of confidence and practicality just keep my boat afloat. If I screw up, I learn something from it and try to manage things better next time. If someone else screws up, I might stew over it for a while, but ultimately, I just right myself and move on. I guess I just don't have the time or interest to care much about whether there's a queen bee or a superdad around. I figure we're all just people after all and everyone is working from a different set of strengths and weaknesses. What is the big deal?

I mean are we really all fretting over what to wear on "back to school night," or chewing our nails with anxiety when one mother is on a first name basis with the principal while we are still at the smile and nod in the hallways stage with that person?

After reading about 1/2 the book and flipping through the rest trying to find a chapter worth reading but failing at that task -- I finally gave up and realized that maybe -- just maybe -- I just have gotten over 7th grade after all. I'll bet I'm not alone.』

『What happens to Queen Bees and Wannabes when they grow up?

Even the most well-adjusted moms and dads can experience peer pressure and conflicts with other adults that make them act like they’re back in seventh grade. InQueen Bee Moms&Kingpin Dads, Rosalind Wiseman gives us the tools to handle difficult situations involving teachers and other parents with grace. Reassuring, funny, and unfailingly honest, Wiseman reveals:

• Why PTA meetings and Back-to-School nights tap into parents’ deepest insecurities

• How to recognize the archetypal moms and dads—from Caveman Dad to Hovercraft Mom

• How and when to step in and step out of your child’s conflicts with other children, parents, teachers, or coaches

• How to interpret the code phrases other parents use to avoid (or provoke) confrontation

• Why too many well-meaning dads sit on the sidelines, and how vital it is that they step up to the plate

• What to do and say when the playing field becomes an arena for people to bully and dominate other kids and adults

• How to have respectful yet honest conversations with other parents about sex and drugs when your values are in conflict

• How the way you handle parties, risky behavior, and academic performance affects your child

• How unspoken assumptions about race, religion, and other hot-button subjects sabotage parents’ ability to work together

Queen Bee Moms&Kingpin Dadsis filled with the kind of true stories that made Wiseman’sNew York Timesbestselling bookQueen Bees&Wannabesimpossible to put down. There are tales of hardworking parents with whom any of us can identify, along with tales of outrageously bad parents—the kind we all have to reckon with. For instance, what do you do when parents donate a large sum of money to a school and their child is promptly transferred into the honors program–while your son with better grades doesn’t make the cut? What about the mother who helps her daughter compose poison-pen e-mails to yours? And what do you say to the parent-coach who screams at your child when the team is losing? Wiseman offers practical advice on avoiding the most common parenting “land mines” and useful scripts to help you navigate difficult but necessary conversations.

Queen Bee Moms&Kingpin Dadsis essential reading for parents today. It offers us the tools to become wiser, more relaxed parents–and the inspiration to speak out, act according to our values, show humility, and set the kind of example that will make a real difference in our children’s lives.

(Old Queens, NY in Early Photographs)
『Book arrived on time in excellent condition. 100% satisfied with everything and will buy a couple more books as Christmas gifts.』

(Less than comprehensive but still satisfying!)
『I guess we all have our own opinion of what we'd like to see in a collection of old photos and the history of a particular place. In the case of this book, there are lots of old photos and interesting memorabilia, like early maps and ads for housing developments, as well as a brief synopsis of each section of the borough through the photos' descriptions. The quality of the photo reproductions is quite good, overall, and the writing is fine. I only wish it was larger and had more from the area I grew up in but, never-the-less, still a worthwhile addition to anyone's bookcase or coffee table.』

(A fascinating look into the past)
『I grew up in Hollis, Queens during the '50s&and '60s and thought that I saw a lot of changes in the neighborhood. But this book is a real eye-opener showing how the area changed from farmlands in the 19th century (including developer's ads) to a fully built up residential community by the 1940's. The book is a must read for anyone who has lived in Queens』

(Old Queens In Photographs: A Window on a Vanished Landscape)
『For this former resident (Corona and Laurelton), Old Queens presented an engrossing, illuminating, and refreshing visual window on the area of New York that has received too little historical attention. Arranged by community, the book provides concise, individual historical narratives to go with a set of photographs of people and places and old maps that can only be called amazing. Indeed, the treasures of this book, for my taste, are the many photos from the era before the construction of the subway lines that transformed rural Queens into megalopolis. Many of the area photos (structures from the 1939 World's Fair, for example) will no doubt be familiar to many. What surprises, however, are photos such as the two page spread of an untamed, deserted pre-World's Fair Flushing Meadow, a lush meadow creased by the winding Flushing River, itself crossed by the vanished Strong's Causeway that carried Corona Avenue traffic across the soggy marsh to Lawrence Street in Flushing. Equally compelling are photos of the muddy looking thoroughly rural roads of Queens Boulevard and Merrick Road (in Springfield) from the early 20th century complete with isolated farm buildings. Perhaps the most symbolic photo, however, is the panoramic photo showing a spanking new IRT Flushing Line elevated tracks slanting across a nearly-vacant 1915 Sunnyside landscape that looks more like Ohio than New York City. This book helps the reader see Queens as it existed before the housing explosion. It also makes one wonder what might have been. In effect, Old Queens shows what was lost to all-too-rapid, unplanned suburbanization left entirely in the greedy hands of the marketplace. Lack of urban planning and nonexistent historic preservation is the unspoken theme that resonates often in this book. Who wouldn't want to live in one of those handsome, tree-shaded, Victorian homes on the shady, Lefferts Boulevard in Richmond Hill, Jamaica, or Elmhurst? The question is academic, since none of these homes survived the Queens building boom of the early 20th century. Suppose Robert Moses had actually carried through plans to turn the Corona Dump/Flushing Meadow into an honest-to-goodness park with kinds of recreational facilities he lavished on his Long Island state parks? Suppose the city fathers (and local politicians) had taken a more custodial role and protected Jamaica Bay and it surrounding marshlands from pollution for descendants of the gentlemen angler shown pulling his crabpot out of a quiet channel in Meadowmere? While this reader would have liked to view a few photos from vanished communities, such as Ramblersville (Ozone Park), Black Stump (Fresh Meadows), or White Pot (Forest Hills), he believes that Seyfried and Asadorian have assembled a fascinating book that appears destined for the coffee table hall of fame, that is, if rabid readers don't tear it to shreds, first.』

(Amazing book)
『Queens usually takes third place to Manhattan and Brooklyn on NYC bookshelfs but this terrific photo collection will go a long way to remedy that. There's an enlightening introduction about the borough and wonderful photos/captions for 27 neighborhoods. My personal favorite is on pp.122-123, a jaw-dropping 1906 view of the strange junction of Jamaica Ave., Myrtle Ave. and Lefferts Blvd. in Richmond Hill. Today, this unique street pattern remains but, alas, the Triangle Hotel, later the Triangle Hofbrau, where the likes of Babe Ruth and Mae West imbibed, recently closed down. I've shown this book to a couple of former Queens people and they were amazed. Don't miss it if you're from Queens or have even a passing interest in urban history. Hopefully, the publisher is correcting a page-order problem in the beginning of the edition I purchased at a museum last summer, but don't let that hold you back. This is a real gem.』
Rich harvest of rare photographs recalls "good old days" in Maspeth, Jamaica, Astoria, Jackson Heights, other areas. Vintage views include DeWitt Clinton mansion, hotel where Washington slept (1790), plus recent landmarks— Astoria Studios, 1939 World's Fair, more. Captions. 261 prints.

(Sweet story, beautiful pictures)
『The story begins as two children, a fairy queen and a pirate, head out for a night of trick or treating. They struggle through feelings of fear and bravery. The story contains a nice little moral by which to learn and grow. The pictures are vibrantly colored and interesting. A wonderful new addition for the Halloween season.』

Wearing the perfect fairy queen costume, with her friend Michael by her side, Ann Estelle is ready for a Halloween night on the town. And what a night it is—full of ghosts and mummies and witches and wizards, and lots of candy, of course.

But Halloween can also be a little bit scary, as Ann Estelle discovers when she tries trick-or-treating at the spookiest house in town. It's awfully dark up there . . . and the pathway is awfully long. Will Ann Estelle be brave enough to ring the bell?

Little trick-or-treaters will enjoy this Halloween outing that sparkles with Mary Engelbreit's signature wit and charm.

(Turns the scriptures into rubber...)
『We are going to study the Virgin Mary in our home church so I thought I'd read some books on her to prepare.

Since Catholics are very much into Mary I thought I'd read one their books for completeness sake. This one had all perfect ratings so I bought it.

But there's so much scripture bending and man made arguments that I lost heart pretty quickly that I was getting anything halfway scriptural.

Here's an example.

Perpetual Virginity
This is the teaching that Mary was and is always a virgin, even though the bible says Jesus had brothers and sisters.

Hahn says this:
"Heretics in the early Church occasionally challenged this teaching, but they never gained much ground...The bulk of their arguments rested on the New Testament passages that refer to Jesus' "brethren"...This is virtually a nonissue for anyone who has a glancing familiarity with Hebrew customs. The Hebrew word for "brother" is a more inclusive term, applying to cousins as well. In fact, in ancient Hebrew there is no word for cousin." (Pages 103-104)

Okay -- so Jesus didn't have brothers and sisters but the bible meant cousins...fine then.

Then on page 135 the author teaches us: "I'll say it again: adelphos means "from the same womb."

So brothers and sisters mean cousins for Jesus' siblings but real brothers from the same womb for everyone else. Kind of a double standard if you ask me.

How does that work? Beats me.

That's just one example.

Also the teaching that Mary is Jesus' mother and bride (being the second Eve) doesn't make sense to me.

There are no bible types of men marrying their mother that I'm aware of.

If you get technical (as much as I can) it seems that God was Adam's father and the earth was his mother and the Holy Spirit was the seed God planted in the earth to make Man. Then God took the rib from Adam and made Eve his bride. I don't remember Adam marrying his Mother or anyone in the bible marrying his Mother. Sisters yes (Abraham). Mother no.

In the Spiritual New Testament version then it seems that God is still the father - the Holy Spirit is still the seed and Mary (the Mother) represents "Spiritual Earth". The body of Christ is the church. And the overcoming church are taken from His side (body/church) (like Adam's rib) when he was "asleep" (dead) is the "bride" or Eve. So the whole church is not the bride but just those taken from the "dead body" or "sleeping body". Or spiritually dormant church.

Technically then the "overcoming church" is a spiritual "Eve". Mary is "spiritual earth" from which "Adam" or "Jesus" came.

I don't think Jesus marries his Mother. But I do know he marries the overcoming church (the elect) taken from the sleeping body (spiritually dead church). That makes sense to me and I don't even have to bend any scriptures either. If he marries his Mom that would seem kind of weird thing for God to teach. We should love our Mother's not be "in love" with them.

So the new "spiritual" earth is Mary in type and shadow not in reality.

That's my two cents worth.

Easy and fun read.

(Great Read)
『I think this would be a good book for someone new to reading about Mary, Our Holy Mother. It is an easy read and if you've been interested in finding out more about the truth of Mary, this will be a great introduction to get you started on your study. I also like how he explains the Rosary and how to pray it.』

(If you don't get "the Mary thing"...)
『Read this. I was almost 98% of the way to Rome, but I just couldn't wrap my head around "the Mary thing". This book explains it so clearly that my final objections were blown away. I'm RC now.』

(One of Dr. Hahn's best to date!)
『I have read many of Dr. Scott Hahn's books, and Hail, Holy Queen was the first I read, and remains my favorite (at least so far!) Dr. Hahn presents the information in a very readable and engaging style, as always. I would highly endorse this book for anybody who is interested in learning more about the Blessed Virgin Mary.』

(A spectacular Read from start to finish)

(Brings chess to life)
『From the author of The Man Who Fell to Earth, the Hustler and The Color of Money. Young girl learns chess from the janitor in the basement of the orphanage and is transported. Chess games are very well described and exciting, even for those who don't know much about the game, and her rise in the ranks is plausible.』

(Relentless inaccuracy ruins the good writing.)
『This is a very well written, gripping character study of a young woman driven to excel at chess. I can understand how the non chess players who have posted reviews might like it.

Unfortunately, for anybody who understands the game, the book is spoiled by many truly boneheaded inaccuracies. For chess players, just a couple of examples, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d5?! is given as a common variation of the Sicilian. Tevis doesn't seem to understand that, in a Swiss System tournament, the only two undefeated players would have to meet in the last round, and much, much more.

For non-players, if you think that this is just chess geek nitpicking, imagine the following. Suppose a book about football implied that it was okay to make passes beyond the line of scrimmage. Suppose a baseball novel had somebody running the bases clockwise. We're really talking that level of inaccuracy here. Tevis claimed that a well know chess master had reviewed his book for accuracy, but if so, he must have ignored his suggestions, or been overwhelmed by how much he would have had to change.

A knowledge of chess is truly a barrier to enjoying this book.』

(Just as I remembered.)
『I first read this as a (much) younger man about 15 years ago. For some reason the ending stuck in my mind. I was interested to see if was as I remembered and it was! This is not an amazing read, but it is gripping, and the chess descriptions are certainly believeable for the amateur. Well worth some couch time.』

(The Queen's Gambit)
『This book completely captivated me. I knew nothing of chess, which doesn't factor in the enjoyment of this page turner. I came across the book completely by accident, a friend passed it to me on a train while traveling through Europe. Needless to say, I did miss much of the countryside as we traveled through various parts of Italy, however, the novel before me was such a masterpiece I had no choice but to continue reading. Feeling absolutely no regrets as we pulled into our final destination, I felt completely satisfied having every emotion imagineable rush through me as Mr. Tevis so artfully scripted. A fabulous read, a re-read, a must have.』

(One of the best novels I've ever read)
『I've read a lot of novels over the years, everything from "literary" work to genre fiction, and it's been quite a while since I've read a novel that kept me up all night because I couldn't put it down. I remember doing that with John Irving's The World According to Garp, and I did it with this phenomenal novel from Walter Tevis.

For years I've been curious about Tevis, but for some reason I never picked up one of his books. I've seen all of the film adaptations of his novels and perhaps I thought I wouldn't discover anything new here ... I'm not sure. I finally read The Queen's Gambit and I'm amazed Tevis isn't more of a literary icon. This is as good as anything Bradbury or any of the other "classic" modern American writers have published over the last 50 years.

I won't go into too many plot points, since a lot of reviewers have already gone there; but let me just say that this novel has all the depth and sophistication of great literature and the wire-taut tension of the best thrillers. It is smart AND exciting, and you don't have to be a chess grandmaster to appreciate the suspense of the gaming in the novel.

If you're on the fence about this, because you think you might be disappointed about an over-hyped book, don't hesitate. This is an awesome book. I will go back and read Tevis' other works too. He's a grandmaster of fiction.』
