『A fascinating survey of the role and status of the female rulers of Egypt documented with hundreds of superb reproductions and graphics, this authoritative volume provides a fascinating exploration of the role and status of the queens of ancient Egypt. Based on her in-depth research, Egyptology expert Rosanna Pirelli provides answers to such questions as: Did the Egyptian queen enjoy a privileged status compared to other sovereigns in antiquity? If this was the case, did the centrality of her role depend on her relations with the pharaoh or on the fact that she incarnated the female counterpart of the divine element? What was her role in Egyptian society? To this end, the book compares images and stories of queens from different eras with images and stories of monarchs who were their contemporaries, using historical reconstruction.』

(Can't stop reading)
『I am a huge fan of Weir's 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII' and having read quite a few books on the subject deem it to be one of the most thorough books I've read. So I was very happy to find 'The Lady Elizabeth' at a local Costco! I can't put this book down, despite having read many non-fiction and fictional books about Bessy! Weir has a real talent of taking a familiar story and making it exciting, through detail, pacing and each crisis in Bessy's earlier life. Warning: it's dangerous to read before you go to sleep because you could be up all night reading! Cheers!』

(Long Live the Queen!)
『The Lady Elizabeth: Alison Weir
Five Stars

Though it starts slowly, The Lady Elizabeth is a captivating telling of the early life of Elizabeth I. We hear so much of her later life, and thus, it was interesting to gain insight into what her childhood/young adult years might have been like.

Although it is historical fiction, this book was not difficult to understand or follow.』

(An embellished and controversial novel of Queen Elizabeth's early years.)
『Take everything you read in this novel with a grain of salt. If you are unfamiliar with the details of Queen Elizabeth's life, I recommend that you read the author's note at the end of the book before you begin reading the novel. After reading Alison Weir's biography on Elizabeth I, I was excited to read The Lady Elizabeth. However, a few pages into the book I was horrified that Ms Weir could write something that so blatantly contradicted her own biography. I quickly read the author's note and was relieved to read that Ms Weir was simply flexing her creative muscle with the sundry of myths surrounding the virgin queen.

The Lady Elizabeth was a rare mix of historical fact and historical gossip. There were a few facts that the author tinkered with for dramatic purposes such as Elizabeth's devotion to her mother's memory. There is no evidence that Elizabeth ever spoke of Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth's infatuation with Thomas Seymour and resulting pregnancy is a well known myth that has lingered around for centuries. The Admiral's advances towards Elizabeth are historical fact, but there is zero evidence that Elizabeth ever had intercourse with him or conceived a child. Elizabeth was considered a precious commodity and would never have been left alone for such an act to be committed. Mary's feeble role as Queen after her marriage to Philip of Spain is actually considered a fact. Although Mary's love was unreciprocated, Mary was not the wallflower that Weir depicted. I recommend The First Queen of England: The Myth of Bloody Mary by Linda Porter for an accurate view of Mary's reign and marriage.

The novel begins with the death of Anne Boleyn and whisks the readers through King Henry VIII's many moods and marriages: Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and finally Katherine Parr. In the turbulent years after the old King Harry's death, Elizabeth remains true to her Protestant fate and her rightful place in the line of succession. Yet Elizabeth has many trials to face before being crowned Queen of England: malicious rumors and plots, accusations of treason and heresy, and the ever present fear of sharing her mother's bloody end. Although the author took many liberties with the historical facts surrounding the young Elizabeth, she still managed to stage a page turner novel. The book was not something I would have expected from Alison Weir, but it is an entertaining read if not taken too seriously. No matter how much or how little you know about Queen Elizabeth, The Lady Elizabeth is terrific and thought provoking read.

(Great Read)
『I loved this book. Granted I have always been fasinated with English history, but Ms. Weir brings this period to life better than anyone else. As with her other historical novel "Innocent Traitor", about Lady Jane Grey, I couldn't put it down. I found myself immediatly picking up her biography of Elizabeth I.

(Delicious historical fiction)
『The Lady Elizabeth: A Novel is intriguing, hard to put down and engrossing to read. You really get a feel for the main characters and can visualize so many details. Loved it, would highly recommend.』
『Following the tremendous success of her first novel, Innocent Traitor, which recounted the riveting tale of the doomed Lady Jane Grey, acclaimed historian and New York Times bestselling author Alison Weir turns her masterly storytelling skills to the early life of young Elizabeth Tudor, who would grow up to become England s most intriguing and powerful queen.

Even at age two, Elizabeth is keenly aware that people in the court of her father, King Henry VIII, have stopped referring to her as Lady Princess and now call her the Lady Elizabeth. Before she is three, she learns of the tragic fate that has befallen her mother, the enigmatic and seductive Anne Boleyn, and that she herself has been declared illegitimate, an injustice that will haunt her.

What comes next is a succession of stepmothers, bringing with them glimpses of love, fleeting security, tempestuous conflict, and tragedy. The death of her father puts the teenage Elizabeth in greater peril, leaving her at the mercy of ambitious and unscrupulous men. Like her mother two decades earlier she is imprisoned in the Tower of London and fears she will also meet her mother s grisly end. Power-driven politics, private scandal and public gossip, a disputed succession, and the grievous example of her sister, Bloody Queen Mary, all cement Elizabeth s resolve in matters of statecraft and love, and set the stage for her transformation into the iconic Virgin Queen.

Alison Weir uses her deft talents as historian and novelist to exquisitely and suspensefully play out the conflicts between family, politics, religion, and conscience that came to define an age. Sweeping in scope, The Lady Elizabeth is a fascinating portrayal of a woman far ahead of her time an orphaned girl haunted by the shadow of the axe, an independent spirit who must use her cunning and wits for her very survival, and a future queen whose dangerous and dramatic path to the throne shapes her future greatness.』

(Elizabeth I)
『Tom Tierney has obviously done a good deal of research in preparation for this book. The costumes are well selected and accurately colored and depicted.
I was disappointed on two scores. Firstly, the costumes aren't printed on card (only the doll is). Secondly, I think there should have been at least two dolls showing the queen at different stages of her life.
It's also odd that dolls of Sir Walter Raleigh and the Earl of Essex are included, but Elizabeth's closest friend (and greatest love), Robert Dudley, wasn't.』

(Nice Paper Doll book of "Elizabeth I")
『It's a pretty paper doll book of the "Queen Elizabeth I" but still I saw other paper doll book who were more beautiful, this one lack of little details but it's still a nice book if you like to know what kind of wardrobe Queen Elizabeth was wearing and if you are interest in "Elizabeth I" like I do you will like it!』
『Meticulously detailed paper doll collection spotlights the strong-willed monarch who led sixteenth-century England to a period of great strength and enormous prosperity. The Queen's seven magnificent gowns of silk, satin, and brocade are accented with pleated ruffs, pearls, and polished gemstones. Two figures of her admirers--Sir Walter Raleigh and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex--are also included. Detailed notes describe each outfit.

(A Heartwarming Story of the Queen Who Earned My Deepest Respect!)
『I was most touched by Queen Elizabeth, seeing that all her life she has had to put country and duty first. I felt heart broken for her with her treatment from her husband and his bad behavior, but at the same time could understand that it was most difficult for him as well, having to give up all his hopes and dreams. I also learned how Diana threatened the monarch with her behavoir, something I never understood until now and I felt differently about the whole thing, and understood both sides. I learned a lot about how royals raise their children and was shocked, but understood that it is how they are raised, and they know no other way. I also learned what the Queen does in official business and just how influential she is. She has earned my deepest respect and I have watched her intereact and must say that when she smiles it is truly captivating because it radiates from her heart. Great book! I highly recommend it.

(GREAT BOOK!!)
『A great book about the Queen. Lots of information, but not too over the top with details and hard-to-understand writing.』

(I wouldn't be amused either!)
『Three years ago, I added this book to my too-large collection of books about the Royal Family. I started re-reading it this week when looking up something about her disinterest in clothes while reading the reports of her visit to Australia. Whoever is doing her hats now should be drawn and quartered!

This is an enjoyable book and I can only feel a bit sorry for the Queen. For all of her worldly possessions, she leads a rather dreadful life. Smiling, looking interested, holding flowers, etc. must almost drive her out of her mind! She does a good job of it, though, and for that I give her credit. It's a good show. I've been watching it for over 40 years!』

(Informative and highly entertaining)
『One of the best books on the British Royal Family and on Queen Elizabeth in particular.

Reading this book one can see that Mr. Davies is quite knowledgeable and has done his homework where researching the subject is concerned.

Queen Elizabeth may not be easily amused - and she has every right not to be - but I certainly was highly amused and entertained.』

(HM may not be amused but I sure was!)
『Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by the British Royal family; watching the weddings of both the Waleses and the Yorks, reading Majesty magazine each month, etc. I bought this book to find out more about the Queen and Prince Phillip. I finished this book within two days and still find myself drawn to it. The depth that the author reaches, describing the Queen's marriage, family, responsibilities, daily life - it is all covered with a thoroughness that makes the reader feel as though they knew Her Majesty personally. Undoubtedly there are other books available that detail Queen Elizabeth II's life, but this one will stand out due to it's ability to draw the reader into the world of this remarkable monarch.』
『An expert royalty watcher exposes the private lives of Britain's ruling dynasty, detailing Elizabeth's celibacy, Prince Philip's adulterous affairs, and the demise of Charles and Diana's and Andrew and Fergie's marriages. 50,000 first printing.』

(English History Made fascinating!)
『English history made fascinating and definitely in the "I could not put it down" category. Great for ALL ages.』

(The third Volume in a Wonderful Series)
『This third and final volume by Robert Lacey really finishes the series. Included are tales about the famous and the not so famous. What I really like about his books are that they are stories- great quick reads about events that we may not be familiar with.

I highly recommend this book to any Anglophile, or anyone wanting to learn more about the history of the UK.』

(WELL WRITTEN HISTORY)
『The author Robert Lacey, writes "The job of the historian is to deal objectively with the available facts. But, history is in the eye of the beholder and also of the historian, who as a human being has feelings and prejudices of his own." In Volume 3, few if any of Lacey's prejudices are apparent as he demonstrates once again that he is one of the best, both as a historian and a storyteller.

Technical, economic, governmental and political advancement dominated this period. The monarchs of the period are succinctly covered including the German George I, the madness of George III, and the coming to the throne of the teenage Queen Victoria. Tomas Paine's idea "that the rights of man, which include equality and liberty, are God-given at birth, and that governments are only good when they protect them" became a part of American doctrine. Curiously, profits of the triangular slave trade helped fuel the spectacular economy of England in the eighteenth century...." England ended slave trade in 1807.

The engineering marvels of the Great Western Railway are noted. In 1842 Queen Victoria chose that railway for her first train trip. This was also a period of great labor unrest and abuse. Labor alliances were formed. The 1888 strike of the "match girls" pioneered techniques of protest still used today, helped the formation of trade unions all over the country and "provided an early grass roots triumph in the struggle for women's rights.

Coverage of the twentieth century is excellent. The World War I trench-warfare truce of 24 December 1914 occurred when both German and Allied troops stopped fighting and celebrated Christmas together. Lacey notes that "such a widespread flowering of peace and friendship had never been seen in the history of war...." In 1915.when a few Allied soldiers trapped behind lines in Belgium were helped to escape by Edith Cavell, matron in a Belgium nurses' training school, the Germans executed her. The worldwide outcry was enormous and the bitterness so great that there were no more Christmas truces. In 1914 the British used volunteers. Young friends marched to recruiting offices, to enlist in what became known as the "pals or chums" battalions. At the Somme nearly twenty thousand British soldiers were killed with another forty thousand wounded: "the greatest ever British loss in a single day of battle.

Most interesting is the account of Edward, Prince of Wales' abdication. Apparently, Edward had been thinking of giving up the throne long before his father's death. Later Edward was involved with Mrs. Simpson, an American divorcee, which was his excuse for abdicating. Brief but sympathetic comments are given Neville Chamberlain's well-meaning attempts to appease Hitler. Robert Lacey asks the rhetorical question regarding Chamberlain "And was he really so wrong to try to stop a conflict which....would claim the lives of more than fifty million people?"

The text coverage of World War II is revealing. The story of the little boats at Dunkirk is exaggerated; "it was the big ships of the Royal Navy that transported the vast majority of the soldiers home.." While Churchill lauded the RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain stating "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few", the text notes "...every fighter pilot depended on a massive and complex pyramid of support staff--radar technicians, the observer crops...." The few were supported by "many." The text's final comment on WWII notes that Winston Churchill, taking up to eight hours, wrote all his own speeches. Churchill phrases are still quoted to this day.

Finally, the text closes with a review of the 1953 discovery of DNA 1953 by Francis Crick and James Watson for which they later received a Nobel Prize

This is an easy and very enjoyable book to read. The reader need not worry about the author's objectivity.

(I love Robert Lacey!)
『Robert Lacey has a most remarkable aptitude for relating history in an engaging manner, while still informing and educating. "The Year 1000" and the first two volumes of "Great Tales" are testaments to this. Lacey also manages to make history relevant and selects figures of note. Also to his credit is his lively, entertaining writing style.』

(History Writing at its Best)
『Those who have had the pleasure of reading this author's first two volumes in this series will know what to expect in this third and final volume - and they will not be disappointed. This volume contains 60 short (4 or 5 pages) snippets of English history - often little known but fascinating facts. These span the years from 1690 to 1953. The writing style, as usual for this author, is clear, simple, lively and quite engaging. The book is hard to put down for, I believe, the following two main reasons: 1) the shortness of the chapters and 2) the excellent writing style. This book can be enjoyed by anyone - but especially history buffs.』
『History at its best--the great stories of England's modern age, distilled in Robert Lacey's inimitable style. From William and Mary to Watson and Crick, Robert Lacey's newest volume offers up the most delightful and intriguing English tales of the last few centuries. Royal families and renowned scientists, highwaymen and war heroes--the most colorful characters of modern English history are here. Samuel Johnson, Mary Wollstonecraft, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill--these are but a few of the famous characters to grace the pages of volume three. Robert Lacey once again captivates with the tales of an era's most pivotal moments: the events and extraordinary characters that shaped a great nation.』

(Isabella: Queen Without a conscience)
『Isabella: Queen Without A Conscience, By Rachel Bard
This was a book we looked forward to reading every night. A well
researched novel that brought to life what were previously just names in a history book. One wishes that the book could be recorded with multiple
readers for each character. We thought that the different perspectives
created a more interesting accounting of the times and events than is usually the case with most historical novels. Sometimes second books can be disappointing, but we loved this one as much as her first one, Queen without a Country. We are looking forward to the next story by Ms Bard

(Great Story Lens to View History)
『This book has been the answer to my gift-giving quandaries. I have given copies to travelers, history buffs, readers looking for a good tale, and girls and women who love a woman's story.
Author Bard shows that Isabella and other royal women (even today) live three lives at once, all interacting, none independent. The intertwining lives involve Isabella's own selfhood, her family, and her country. Bard does this exploration well. No act on Isabella's part is free of these three responsibilities, and the consequences can be joyful, tragic, but most are mixed. We follow Isabella as a virgin girl, wife to English King John, mother, adulterer, again wife, and finally widow.
Skillfuly helping this exploration, the story shifts first-person narration among the players while artfully keeping Isabella as our focus. As the plot progresses, story sections are told by Isabella, King John, a lady in waiting, lover, mother-in-law Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, second husband, and her son, English King Henry. What the multiple points of view allow is clarity of motivation, humor, plot complexity, reversals, foreshadowing, tension, and easily and concisely accessed historical and cultural details.
The read is smooth--enabled by the layout and type face as well as by being impeccably edited and proofed. Major publishing houses could learn from Bard.

(Unconscience Queen Makes History!)
『Ms. Bard's latest, "Isabella: Queen Without a Conscience", was a tasty read. I loved the author's ability to combine historical fact with unhysterical fiction. It takes true talent to bring such an important figure to life. I eagerly await the third book in this trilogy (the first was "Queen Without A Country" about Berengeria, Richard the Lion Hearted's bride...)』

(A fascinating period, a bewitching heroine)
『I loved Isabella. In particular, I appreciated Bard's cuing me at the beginning of each chapter as to whose voice I would be hearing. It's a complicated book about a complicated time in medieval history when battle lines and loyalties seemed to shift with every season, but Rachel Bard has made these shifts seem inevitable.

I was recently traveling by train from Paris to Bordeaux and so passed many towns that were part of Isabella's life. It was wonderful to be able to look at them and remember what went on there all those years ago when a headstrong young princess was growing up, defending and defining herself.

I understand that there will be a third medieval queen book coming out soon and I can hardly wait to dive into it.
Hurray for making stodgy European history into a vivid, lively tale!』

(Three and a half stars)
『Though not at the level of Ms. Bard's non-fiction histories or her previous novel, Isabella: Queen Without a Conscience is an enjoyable well-researched book.

The title is slightly misleading, as Isabella is portrayed as spoiled, self-centered, manipulative, and rather unintelligent, but never as cruel or evil. My primary disatifaction stemmed from the constantly rotating first person narrative, which tended to break up the continuity of the story.

I also am curious as to why Ms. Bard did not include any of John's numerous illegitamite children as characters, as at least three were part of the court during the time Isabella was Queen.

『In her day the beauteous Isabella of Angouleme was called a Jezebel, a sorceress, an adulteress. As the young bride of King John of England she was charged with seducing John into neglecting his kingly duties. Back in her native land she and her second husband were accused of trying to assassinate the King of France. Now meet the real Isabella, Relive the turbulent twelfth and thirteenth centuries when France and England were struggling for control of western France. You'll encounter kings and queens, popes and prelates, warriors and courtiers who were the power elite of their day. You'll become intimately acquainted with this fascinating and enigmatic woman, prey to strong passions and ambitions, aware of the power of her beauty, willing to dare all in order to be and be seen as queen.』

Book Two: The Impossibles (Out Like a Light)
Book Three: Supermind (Occasion for Disaster)

Brain Twister:
All the FBI needed to save America was a telepath. Then agent Kenneth Malone found one. Only she was crazy and thought she was Queen Elizabeth. He also needs her help when teenage gang members can escape police and payment for their crimes by teleporting away and vanishing--appearing to simply wink out like a light.

The Impossibles:

Supermind:
It continues to follow the adventures of FBI Agent Malone as he investigates psychic criminals. He investigates a series of incidents in which people make mistakes--sometimes minor, and sometimes major--that lead to disasters. It looks like a secret cabal of psis may be behind events, influencing the behavior of those involved. Are they? And if so, why?
