IPhone 3G used's review (Everything you wanted to know about the Kings and Queens of England) 『There is a lot of history in this book. Over 1500 years is covered. The author digs deep into history to give us the histories of the people that became the Kings and Queens of England from the reign of Egbert in the 800's to Queen Elizabeth II who is currently reigning.
The book is broken down into sections. The first section details the lives of the King or Queen in question. The next details the people that they married. The next is how the person died and where they are buried. The next section details wither the King or Queen had any illegitimate children.
Very informative book for people who are interested in the royal family or just want to learn more. It also has a family tree that connects the first King of England to Queen Elizabeth-fascinating stuff! 』
(Great Tidbits Of History) 『This is a fun book that gives interesting and little known facts occuring in the royal history of England. It ties together many unions, births, deaths and other important events of English royalty and lesser royals. It is an easy read and a great reference for understanding the royal succession.』
(Chill out - people) 『Honestly, people - calm down. Did any of the previous readers/reviewers honestly expect a book with the title "Kings, Queens, Bones and Bastards" to be a flawless description of centuries of English history ? And that with scholarly accuracy and intellect ? Take it for what it is worth. Read the "Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy" if you want accuracy. This book is a highly entertaining, easy read. I highly recommend it for its amusing anecdotes and enjoyable style.』
(no murder happened in the corridor) 『leading to Princess Sophia Dorothea`s apartement.
In fact Count Königsmarck was last seen whe he left his house in Hannover on the evening of 11.July 1694. No corpse was ever found. Of course there were rumours all over the town that he had been assassinated and murdered and that his body had been thrown in the river Leine. But wether this had really happened anif it was being carried out on the instruction og George Ludwig (the latter George I) or his father Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hannover or the Countess of Platen (who was not only Königsmarck`s mistress but also Ernest Augustus`s) will never be known. Princess Sophia Dorothea was not divorced and put under house arrest in Ahlden because the dying Königsmarck was found lying before her bodouir But because she was forced to return to her father in Celle. This business was called run away and although she did not "flee" voluntarily and although of course her father turned her down she was accused of wilful deserting thus justifying George Ludwig to divorce her. As a note of history she became not only the mother of the english dynasty of Hannover but through her daughter, another Sophia Dorothea, the mother of the prussian dynasty of Hohenzollern.
But on the whole the book is remarkably enertaining and gives you a fascinating insight into 1500 years of englisch history.』
(Entertaining, but has many mistakes of fact.) 『The book is entertaining but if your goal is the study of history, do not buy this book. It is, as another reviewer pointed out, full of mistakes. The first one I found (that stood out) was on page 10. The author states that Mary II (of William III and Mary II) was the sister of James II. She was, in fact, James II's daughter. William's mother, Mary, was the sister of James II and Charles II.
I also found that Hilliam's method of tracing the lines of descent of the various royal houses of Great Britain seemed designed to confuse, rather than enlighten, the reader. I think that it even confused the author himself(see page 10).
On the plus side, the sections on Bones and Bastards are entertaining to read, if you don't plan on using this book for research purposes.』
『Who invented the House of Windsor as a royal name? Who founded Westminster Abby? Which king had twenty-one illegitimate children? David Hilliam answers all these questions and many, many, more, covering unusual incidents of royal history which rarely appear in text books.』

It posits a relationship between the growth of power of women in medieval Christian Europe and the growth in power of the chess queen. Yolam makes her point well. This is a good read for anyone interested in history, women's issues or chess.』
(The transformation of chess) 『Many of us, even those of us who don't play either well or often, are familiar with chess. Some of us will be aware that some pieces are differently represented in different parts of the world, but I wonder how many of us are aware of the comparatively recent introduction of the queen?
Marilyn Yalom attempts three objectives in this interesting book. Firstly, and of most interest to me, she outlines a history of the game of chess and its likely spread across the world. Secondly, Dr Yalom explains the development of the piece currently known as the queen in most European chess play both in terms of its replacement of earlier pieces, and its emerging power. Finally, Dr Yalom makes a case for parallels between the emergence of the power of the chess queen and the rise of powerful female sovereigns in Europe.
While I am attracted to the notion of the role of the chess queen as a reflection of the rise of strong queens (such as Isabella of Castile), and a possible association with the cult of the Virgin Mary, this is of peripheral interest to me. What I did find fascinating was the history of the development of the game, especially the differences between cultures and countries. Dr Yalom advises that the chess queen did not appear on the board until about 1000: some 200 years after the game had been introduced to southern Europe. Yet, by 1497, the queen had developed from a weak piece (moving one square at a time on the diagonal) to the more formidable force that she is today.
Dr Yalom presents a wealth of information in this book. Whether you share her conclusions, her enthusiasm for the subject combined with her capacity to present a variety of interesting data in a readable and accessible way will make this an enjoyable read.
Those who are serious chess players may find some of the facts interesting. Those of us interested in the evolution of institutions of power and who choose to explore parallels between games of strategy and political realities should also enjoy this book.

(First Female CEO on the Board.) 『I enjoyed this book for one reason. I learned some history! I hated history in school and did not pay attention. This book centre's on a subject I love "Chess" and does a good job on covering the history of the Queen. I have not verified Ms. Yalom's research in-depth but what I have confirms her conclusions. Ms. Yalom discuss the replacement of the Vizier on the original board to a minor, weak piece to how she became the piece she is today. Yalom uses historical Queens, including Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen Isabella, Catherine de' Medici, and Elizabeth I to show how they might have influenced the "Queen's evolution. I especially enjoyed the color pictures of the surviving pieces, showing the detail and artistry. If you are a Chess-Nut, enjoy learning, and not afraid of a female CEO then you will probably enjoy this book. 』
(FASCINATING HISTORY INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN) 『this book was a thorough treat from start to finish... the history of chess is truly fascinating and ms. yalom interweaves incredibly interesting historical details of the lives and incredibly exploits of the medieval monarchs, specifically the queen of the time...
every page is filled with pure pleasure... the pictures add a very unique dimension to the story by making you feel you are there and seeing the very people in those paintings... and ms. yalom gently reminds you of who's who when she brings back names that were mentioned earlier many pages before so you can keep track of the truly fascinating historical figures as the story builds and unfolds...
ms. yalom, WOW! i loved this book tremendously』
(Very informative history of chess) 『The birth of the chess queen is synonymous with the birth of "modern" chess rules, when the Court of Queen Isabella of Spain expanded the power of the Queen. Had we all known about the date and place of this sudden change, the book would be little more than a "travel guide" down the corridors of chess heritage; but the new light that Marilyn Yalom sheds upon chess history makes "Birth of the Chess Queen" a landmark work.
It was interesting to read chess history for the specific nations of Europe, England, Scandanavia, Spain, Italy, Russia, and the lands bordering upon the Mediterraniean Sea. Marilyn Yalom presents the archaelogical record related to the chess sets or pieces recoverd from the many nations, and adds to it, historical accounts of the chess play from around the world known at that time, through poetry and other literature and representation of chess in art work. It is an account of chess used for romance and courtship, in addition to other social discourse. It is refreshing for the ability of its author to elaborate the defining moment when chess expanded from it's slow-moving and primitive structure, to the dynamic game we know today.
There is a chess history which costs well over $70.00, besides which, chess history can lend itself to mere repetition. I appreciate this affordable and scholarly work for its distinct approach. Marilyn Yalom draws a clear distinction between chess play of the Medieval period, the players of the chess "Golden Age" (1800's ), and the highly competitive and organized event we play now. Marilyn Yalom introduces some fascinating questions regarding certain historical anomalies. For example: Why was Queen Isabella of Spain the only female monarch to pass through the ritual of coronation or "crowning" with a SWORD? Why indeed! Crowning with a sword was, until Isabella, a right reserved for male monarchs only. The reader will want to know more.
Yalom brings a distinct insight into the history of our beloved game. To it's credit, "Birth of the Chess Queen" is devoid of "feminist" stereotyping. Yalom's research is thorough and well presented in an objective way, unbiased. The relationship between chess playing and the religious authorities is of distinct interest. In different times, Muslim Imams, Christian Popes, Cardinals, and Bishops and Priests, and Jewish Rabbi's and Talmudic Scholars all vied with each other for offensive prohibitions against play of the "Royal Game". At other times, chess had approval.
You betcha I recommend it. Chess players will find their interest in the game renewed and deepened. ---Bruce R. Bain, President, Denver Chess Club 』 『
Everyone knows that the queen is the most dominant piece in chess, but few people know that the game existed for five hundred years without her. It wasn't until chess became a popular pastime for European royals during the Middle Ages that the queen was born and was gradually empowered to become the king's fierce warrior and protector.
Birth of the Chess Queenexamines the five centuries between the chess queen's timid emergence in the early days of the Holy Roman Empire to her elevation during the reign of Isabel of Castile. Marilyn Yalom, inspired by a handful of surviving medieval chess queens, traces their origin and spread from Spain, Italy, and Germany to France, England, Scandinavia, and Russia. In a lively and engaging historical investigation, Yalom draws parallels between the rise of the chess queen and the ascent of female sovereigns in Europe, presenting a layered, fascinating history of medieval courts and internal struggles for power.

(Telepathic love) 『Twin brothers Shan-Lin and Vincent, the Queen's Warriors introduced in the first book of this series, Stephanie's Menage, decide on a dangerous path to save their country, the Queendom of Aranak. Queen Sara grows ever more sadistic, and her cruelties endanger the peace and safety of the Realm, as well as the very lives of many citizens. Sara refuses to submit to the law of the Queendom, and relinquish her throne to her successor, Stephanie, the wife of her twin sons.
The Queen's Warriors tell Queen Sara that they are going to Earth to search for their destined soulmate. They travel to Earth through a Tear between worlds, however, with the purpose of consulting with the future Queen Stephanie, and her husbands Mitch and Kristain, on the best course to take to save the Queendom.
Shari White, an Earthwoman, catches the eye of the twins. Much to her surprise, they whisk her back to Aranak, to pose as their wife. Neither she nor they realize that, in truth, she IS their destined mate. Nor do any of the three realize that Shari will risk her life as she is drawn into the dangerous struggle to save Aranak.
As mentioned above, this is the second novel in a series about an alternate universe in which twins are born with the ability to communicate mentally, and in which it is customary for twins to marry the same woman (or man, if the twins are female). While I was a bit confused about the initial events in this novel--you REALLY need to read the first book in the series to truly understand what is going on--once I got into it and accepted the setting without the preliminaries, I really enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and well-drawn, and I became very concerned about what might happen to them. This is definitely an erotic novel--very hot--and is centered around the menage a trois of the central characters. The reader should also know that there are several scenes of violence and torture depicting Queen Sara's excesses. In spite of that, I thought this was an excellent book and a great read, and I went right out and bought the first one--and that's the highest praise I can give a book! -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews) 』 『Shan Lin and Vincent Rayan (whom we met briefly in STEPHANIE'S MENAGE) embark on a dangerous journey filled with intrigue and duplicity. Fed up with a Queen determined to destroy their Realm, the twin warriors are prepared to sacrifice all for the love of their Queendom. Queen Sara has become more explosive in her sexual escapades. She refuses to surrender the Realm to the Queendom's new and rightful ruler. She will do anything, including sacrificing the remaining members of her family, to ensure her right to the throne of Aranak. Add to the mix a feisty young Earth woman struggling to find her own independence. Shari White never expected to be dragged into the middle of a fight for an entire Realm. Unsure in what direction her life was supposed to turn, it shocks her to no end to find herself in a different universe altogether. She also never expected that same path to lead her to love. What starts out as an undercover sham of a marriage soon becomes more real than either man can begin to imagine as one tiny woman brings both of these strong-willed Warriors to their knees.』

"Never mind, the next will be a prince." -- Queen Victoria's comment when informed as to the gender of her first child
I've always been interested in the Victorian period of English history. One of the most fascinating of the people of the time is the woman who gave her name to the era, Queen Victoria herself. Longtime author John van der Kiste, who has penned several biographies of the European royalty, now turns his attention to the Queen and her nine very different and unusual children.
While this is a good place to start research on the various children of Victoria, the treatment is just too light and shallow to be of any real use. Most of the information that is given is of the 'who was born, married, and died' variety, along with various illnesses and mishaps. Almost nothing is given of the sibling rivalries and dramas that must have played out in such a huge family with so many distinct characters. Van der Kiste has written other collective biographies of royal siblings, and several stand-alone biographies of various royals, but this is not one of his better efforts.
The best part of the book is one of the appendices that lists all of the children, and provides pertinent information about their own children and the many intertangled relationships that they would create -- by the First World War, descendants of Queen Victoria would be found either occupying or marrying into nearly every throne in Europe with the exception of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, several small German principalities and the Italian royal house.
The author did update his book and bibliography, making note of the new material and books published on the individuals, it's still not really worth the effort to seek out a copy unless you are a fan of van der Kiste's work. The photographs are rather muddled, and not very unique to the work -- many come from other sources. Most of all, the entire narrative has the feel of a cut-and-paste job; while it is good to see the story of Queen Victoria and her children presented in a cohesive whole, and in chronilogical order, it simply lacks the depth of other, far better written, biographies.
Somewhat recommended.』
(Very competent survey) 『This author produces very workmanlike and highly readable popular histories of the modern period, this time with a bio-political survey of Victoria's nine children and forty grandchildren. They possessed widely differing personalities but remained a close-knit family -- though relations often were strained by divided loyalties through marriage into other European dynasties. The author also makes good use of illustration and includes a good (though brief) bibliography.』
(Good overview of all 9 children) 『If you have nothing else in your library re: the 9 children of Queen Victoria&Prince Albert -- no other biographies of Vicky, Albert Edward, et al.-- then this is the book to have. It gives a good overview of the lives of all nine children. However, I found it a little tedious to read because I HAVE read separate biographies of Vicky, Albert Edward, Louise, Arthur&Beatrice, and those biographies are the sources for Van der Kiste's book. So, if you are like me a royalty buff who's already got the biographies, you don't need to read this because it has nothing to add. But it's a well-written&concise history of all the children's lives.』
(Royally Good!) 『A very in depth and intriguing view into the life and lifestyles of the children and grandchildren of the "grandmother of europe", Queen Victoria. If you are after something easy to read and digest but not too in depth,on a wide variety of royals, then Van der kiste is the author for you. I find his books to be very interesting to read as well as informative, which is a hard combination to find. Very good reading! Im on to his next book.』 『
Queen Victoria and Albert, the Prince Consort, had nine children who, despite their very different characters, remained a close-knit family. Inevitably, as they married into European royal families their loyalties were divided and their lives dominated by political controversy. This is not only the story of their lives in terms of world impact, but also of personal achievements in their own right, individual contributions to public life in Britain and overseas, and as the children of Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort.

IPhone 3G used's review (So Bad it makes you weep! No Research weak weak weak) 『When I saw the title of this book and then read the back cover I was so excited! But then I began to read the book. This author did no research, how do I know? She claimed a Peasant blouse and broomstick skirt would have been okay to wear as undies in 1500's England.
It is obvious that the author has gone to Renaissance Faires, by her discriptions, and I guess to her it might seem like a great place to do research. However? It is not, Checking out extant clothing of the time, researching museums would have made this book a better read, I know I am being a Snark for stating the authenticity sucks.... but it does in fact suck royally!
#1. The cover is horrible, it does not show man of the time period in question, but a modern guy in a badly done outfit....
#2. Herione who is supposed to be a "textile expert" and an embroiderer. Yet she does not know the Renaissance Faire get up is not what would be seen at QE 1's court.
#3. She was making a dress in satin in PURPLE! What kind of Satin? We are never told, but she is a TEXTILE EXPERT!!
#4. Elizabeth's gowns are documented, She never owned a 'purple' gown, She did have"Mulberry" gowns which was a kind of burgundy. No purple EVER. It would have taken no more than 20 minutes of research to find out that fact.
I would have liked to have known more about the people involved in this fantasy, Mary Bolyen did have 2 male children of Henry VIII, surprising that they never surfaced to try for the throne. History is astounding in the real vs fantasy we can take it too.
But this author did not take it very far and it was limited by her own lack of knowledge of her subject.
I am glad this book was only a Buck for me, and I wish I had not purchased it but borrowed it from the library.

(Captivating, suspenseful...may i rate this book a 10?) 『This book was just plain amazing...Sharon Reynolds and Richard Graniville had a powerful chemistry. I absolutely loved the setting, the 16th century Elizibethian time. I feared for Richard, when the queen found out about his plot with the catholics to evict her from the throne and locked him in the tower of london. I really enjoyed the part when Sharon finally told Richard that she was from the future. The ending of the the book was a complete surprise to me! I figured you know just "happy ever after" but it was more than happy ever after. If I go on, this page will not be able to fit any other reviews. Know this: this book is a definate plus! it was captivating, suspenseful, romantic I couldn't put it down for a second! get your self a copy. It is worth it!!!』
(Romance is a bit graphic.) 『It really is a great story - for that I would have given it 5 stars. I found the "romantic" parts a bit too graphic though. I certainly wouldn't want a teenager or my Mom reading this.』
(QUEEN ELIZABETH OR KING RICHARD?) 『With her third time travel novel, Terri Brisbin once again captures the hearts of her fans. Ms. Brisbin is fast becoming a force with which to reckon in the time travel genre.
Thirty year old Sharon Reynolds, head curator for the historical costume and fabric collection of the Chicago Museum, is in an old manor house in London, England, examining a collection of clothing purported to be from the Elizabethan period. While doing so, she discovers a piece of parchment dated 1560 A.D. concealed in one of the gowns, the written contents of which, had it been discovered back then, would have had the power to change history as we know it. In her excitement to share this find with her colleagues, Sharon stumbles into a small, hidden room and finds herself transported to sixteenth century Elizabethan England.
There, she is providentially mistaken for one of Queen Elizabeth's seamstresses. She meets up with the Queen's stable master, the handsome and charming Richard Granville, illegitimate son of Henry VIII and half brother to Queen Elizabeth I. Attracted to him, she finds herself falling in love with him before she realizes that the parchment she holds has the power to change his fate, as well as that of Elizabeth and England, forever.
This is a wonderfully inventive time travel tale, replete with political intrigues, plot twists, and characters who charm the reader. The author masterfully weaves a tapestry of events that will keep the reader turning the pages of this book.』
(Great Book!) 『I really enjoyed this book! I thought the ending was especially wonderful...romantic and yet a total surprise.
