(A right royal scandal...)
『The history of the British Royal Family extends well past 1000 years ago, but for a long time, the date of 1066 has had pride-of-place as the demarcation of the 'proper' lineage, and Brenda Ralph Lewis' book on the kings and queens of England follows suit. Lewis does not pretend to give an extensive or in-depth history here - this being a book with the Reader's Digest imprimatur, it is as one might expect, a summary and overview of the highlights of the reigns. This is not to say that Lewis gives short shrift or lack of attention to her subjects - far from it! But she does concentrate on the highlights (and lowlights) of each subject, focusing a bit more on the more headline-worthy aspects of each reign, as one might expect from the subtitle of the book, 'Murder, Mayhem, and Scandal: 1066 to the Present Day'.

Scandal and attention-getting intrigue is hardly the province of the current generations of the British Royal Family. Indeed, compared to some of their predecessors, the current crop of royals can be considered rather mild in many respects. Lewis details the intrigues around many dynastic shifts - the Wars of the Roses, the race for an heir to George IV, etc. - as well as some of the personal battles - the aforementioned George's ongoing battle with his wife, Caroline, the 'Injured Queen of England', the current Queen's 'annus horibilis', and finally the Charles and Diana split, ending with Diana's death, the point at which Lewis' book on murder, mayhem and scandal concludes.

One gets a bit of a distorted view of the royals from this text, in that one wonders if there is any merit at all in any of the lot for the past 1000 years. In fact, Lewis holds up various figures for their virtues, sometimes against type-casting: Queen Mary Tudor, the first queen to reign in her own right, is nicknamed by history as 'Bloody Mary', but Lewis points out that, in her own time, she was known as a kind-hearted and long-suffering woman. However, there is more than enough juicy gossip to keep the narrative going for several times the page number allotted to this text, so Lewis necessarily had to be selective in her presentation. This is, of course, the story of the English monarchs, so the various tales of the Scottish, Welsh and Irish leaders are only drawn in as they impact the English 1066 - present standard lineage.

Each page is generously illustrated with full-colour photographs, paintings, diagrams, charts and other graphic images. Not a single page is without an image and colour. The text is also laid out in such as way as to make reading very easy and pleasant, with bold face, pull-quote boxes, and other such devices employed throughout. This will make reading a history text much more palatable to younger readers - this text will be of interest to secondary school students and beyond.

There is a useful index, but it is a bit incomplete. The genealogy charts are also drawn so as to focus only upon the key figures in the drama, rather than the whole family, so readers hoping for more complete information in that regard should look to the Oxford History of the British Monarchy, or one of books by Antonia Fraser, among others. However, despite these minor flaws, the book is fun to read - one gets the sense that, had the popular press been around throughout the history of the royals, this would be very much what the stories and headlines would have looked like.

『Explore the fascinating history of the British monarchy with The Kings&Queens of England from Reader's Digest. The scandal, the murders, and the intrigue - history has never been so exciting! Charting the progress of the monarchy from the invasion of the Normans in 1066, to the Wars of the Roses, Henry VIII's divorce and Charles I's execution, right up to the present day, this is a definitive guide to the rule of the kings and queens of England. The Kings&Queens of England looks at each royal dynasty in turn, concentrating on the most exciting aspects of each era, including war, conspiracy, treachery, betrayal and unrequited love. Read about the mysterious death of William II, shot by an arrow while hunting in the New Forest in 1100, or about the retinue of mistresses Charles II kept in grand style in houses all over London during the Restoration period. The book follows the royal family histories right up to the present day, looking at the adulteries and divorces of the House of Windsor, and the tragic death of Princess Diana in a Paris car crash in 1997. Including analysis about how the Monarchy has managed to survive the scandals that have followed it down the centuries, and essential 'family trees' detailing all the royal dynasties, The Kings&Queens of England is an engrossing read from start to finish.』

(Not quite my cup of... "royal-ty")
『I have read almost every book by Sue Townsend, starting from "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole" and have always appreciated her ability to convey strong emotions combined with a fine humour, extrapolating a funny side to heart-knotting situations, thus usually delivering entertaining, laugh-out-loud books which also offer an opportunity to reflect and ponder over a few things in life.

I got to "The Queen&I" just recently, years later it was published for the first time and this probably took some sparkle away from it. Yes, it is outdated by now and although it still proves to be an easy, quite entertaining read, I felt it was rather "lukewarm". Perhaps even the farfetchedness of the events taking place added to a raised eyebrow (as opposed to some of Ms. Townsend's other books, the Mole saga in primis, more credible, down-to-earth works of fiction).

In this book, the Republicans have taken over and the Royal Family have lost all powers. They are all sent to a council estate and have to adjust to the best of their ability. Will they manage? That's for you to find out if you read this book, but should this be the first book you read by Sue Townsend, skip it altogether and get to the "Adrian Mole" books first, in chronological order, starting from "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4 ". Granted that this was published about 25 years ago for the first time (much earlier than "The Queen&I"), you would have to take the whole story into historical perspective (early 1980s) but if you like the tragic-comic genre it will not fail to engage you to this day!

(Hilarious!)
『Sue Townsend knows how to turn a phrase; hers is, to my surprise, sophisticated and intelligent humor with keen social commentary thrown in. I've read this several times and guffawed my way through.』

(Maybe funny. . . ultimately not worth it)
『This novel takes a look at what might happen if one day a radical political party suddenly came into power in the United Kingdom, including a platform that the British royal family be denied their positions of status and relegated to extremely low level government sponsored housing and given only as much money as the average person welfare recipient. The royal family makes adjustments, the country quickly learns to live without them, quasi-hilarity ensues.

Quote: "I had a wendy house bigger than this," said the Queen, as she peered into the main living room. "We've had bloody cars bigger than this," said Prince Philip.

This book is set in 1992 (if it was meant to be a real study of how the royal family would deal with being forced from their position I would say the author ought to have used a fictional point some time in the future, but since it's a comedy the supposed character traits of the royal family as it was then composed are needed) after a surprising election. Although I was aware that the book was trying to be funny, most of the time I just didn't see it enough to be actually entertained. Quasi-entertained, maybe. I had trouble throughout the book suspending disbelief long enough to really get into it, so maybe that's my problem. It was hard for me to imagine that any stretch of the imagination could include the royal family meekly living out their exile in a projects house (called Hells Close of all things), instead of doing as exiled royals have throughout the century and living with rich friends and family members abroad until the whole thing blows over. So I readily admit that the fact that I had so much trouble letting go of reality probably hindered my enjoyment of the book, but considering all the effort I put into suspending my disbelief at the end of the day I felt it was not at all worth it.』

(Funny little book!!!)
『In this book, Republicans have taken over England and the Royal family is forced to leave and go live in the poorest section of London. The Queen quickly adapts, Philip goes mad, Charles gets rebellious, Diana becomes a thrift store shop-a-holic, the queen mother goes into madness and believes that she is living in the year 1953, the boys (William and Harry) adapt to their new enviroment, Anne falls in love with a cockny man next door, and finally the new British government sells England to Japan! Of course there is the ending shocker.

Quite a funny novel. It takes place in 1992, of course a lot has happened to the Royal family since then, but it's still fun to read. Highly recommend.』

(Cute book)
『This is a great fun book, about what could happen if the monarchy was dissolved, and the royals were forced to be normal people. It was silly, but great ffun!』
『A runaway #1 British bestseller, Sue Townsend's very, very (extremely) funny satire offers welcome relief from the very real-life peccadillos of the House of Windsor as England's royals are given sack and are forced to go on the dole. A delightfully impudent, brilliant and possibly prophetic work.』

(Too much gay culture, too little opera)
『This book is well-written, which is why I give it 3 stars; but much of it is well-written nonsense, which is why I give it only 3 stars.

First, it is mis-titled. It is not about opera so much as about opera singers, in particular female opera singers who allegedly appeal especially to gay men, such as Maria Callas (there is a whole section (pp. 134-53) on "the gay cult of Callas") - what must my wife think when I play her records?

Second, where it leaves off the gays-as-super-aesthetes stuff, and attempts to discuss testable hypotheses, it often gets the facts backwards. For example: "Records helped kill opera by limiting the repertoire to a handful of repeated and repeatable chestnuts." (p. 47) The truth is of course the exact opposite. Before records, a handful of operas were performed in a season and every season would include at least a Bohème, a Butterfly, and/or a Carmen - one would be lucky to hear a couple of hundred operas in an entire lifetime even if one lived in one of the few world cities with an opera company. Today I can, as I do, live in the desert and choose from thousands of recorded operas whenever I feel like it, an unprecedented cornucopia of operatic riches. Similarly, Koestenbaum states that "opera virtually died with Puccini" (p. 74). That is true only if you don't count Richard Strauss's Arabella (1933) and Capriccio (1942), Alban Berg's Wozzeck (1925) and Lulu (1937), or all or most of the operas of Hindemith, Weill, Krenek, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Gershwin, Poulenc, Menotti, Barber and Benjamin Britten. Puccini may represent the end, even the Indian summer, of romantic Italian opera, but scarcely of opera.

(Me LikEy..)
『Me likey the book, me likey Gays in Opera cause no one writes about (see "Opera: The Undoing of Women; Catherine Clement) them. And Opera, Callas singing Delibes Laksme is good. It's good someone talks about how Gays like Opera, otherwise straight corporate society would think they were the only cultured ones,..Yep, Me like.』

(Theory on a High Note)
『The Queen's Throat is an insightful and animated blend of knowledge and intuition exploring the connections and overlappings of homosexuality and opera, arriving at a number of intriguing conclusions. The core of opera's queerness is dismantled and reassembled with a reflective and lyrical precision that defies typical essay format and approach. This is a brilliant monologue -- a very entertaining brainstorm which even includes silly graphics. It's smart, funny, personal, and spirited and even of interest for the operatically challenged. In fact, I bet big opera fans would give this a five.』

(Tediously whimsical)
『There's no denying that Wayne Koestenbaum is a very smart man, but that still doesn't make THE QUEEN'S THROAT very worthwhile. The narratorial persona he adopts (which he's stuck to ever since the book was published ten years ago) is of a slight hysterical, over-the-top aesthete who takes to impossibly grandiose and silly declamations (such as when he pretends to dream he is Thaïs: "Wayne, Thaïs must have pearls!"). The book really belongs to that peculiar moment in academia when writers could claim whatever trivial thing they did in daily life was politically important, with regard to identity politics, simply because they claimed it to be "subversive"; if you give eventwo seconds worth of thought to the strictures and actual repressive measures gay men and women must face on a daily basis all over the world, you'll see how trivial Koestenbaum's claims that his trivialities are politically important really are.

There is some fun to be had in the reading of this work, but the narrator's giddy narcissism does get very wearisome after a while. This new edition comes with a new and especially pompous preface from Tony Kushner.』

(Queenly Insights)
『The author is sometimes outrageous yet outspoken in some of his assumptions and observations about those who attend and enjoy opera and those singers and other musicians who perform these works. Some may disagree vehemently with some or all of his consclusions, but no one who reads this book will be without an opinion - either agreeing wholeheartedly with the author or having a "hissy fit" over his "over-the-top" arguments and perceptions. It is amusingly illustrated with occasionally very droll captions to go with the archival photos. On the whole, this book is a pleasant diversion for before-bed reading and may keep you from falling asleep with some of the author's "apercus" in mind』
『"Brilliant. . . The Queen's Throat is a dazzling performance."-New York Times Book Review This passionate love letter to opera, lavishly praised and nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award when it was first published, is now firmly established as a cult classic. In a learned, moving, and sparklingly witty melange of criticism, subversion, and homage, Wayne Koestenbaum illuminates mysteries of fandom and obsession, and has created an exuberant work of personal meditation and cultural history.』
『Why do so many gay men love opera? What makes an "opera queen"? What is the connection between gay sexuality and the full-throated longing that emerges from the diva's mouth? InThe Queen's Throat: Opera, Homosexuality, and the Mystery of Desire, self-proclaimed opera queen Wayne Koestenbaum investigates the hidden--and unexpected--mysteries that opera and sexuality produce. At once a personal meditation and an iconoclastic, highly entertaining survey of divas,The Queen's Throatis ultimately a profoundly moving, and at times curiously disturbing, investigation of the intricate interplay between art and sexuality, between beauty and eroticism. Koestenbaum is not afraid to challenge, and he more or less grabs readers by the hand to drag them, with nonstop exuberance, through the ornate, highly stylized world of diva worship. Traipsing through descriptions of classic performances, musical autobiographies, personal recollections, historical notations, and the music itself, Koestenbaum creates for us the daring, frenzied, disordered, highly sexual--and ultimately ecstatic--world of the opera queen.--Michael Bronski

(Not just for grade school kids....)
『This book has very useful information and beautiful illustrations for anyone interested in the life cycle of a bumblebee. Its informative for the novice beekeeper because its explained in very simple 'non-scientific' terms that anyone can understand. A great starter book before you research the more biological text-book type of information on bumblebees and pollination.

(Refreshing and highly informative.)
『Simple but concise drawings and watercolor illustrations of a queen bee and her stages of life, duties, activities and choices. The illustrator is a well-known scientific artist and the quality of her work speaks for itself in this story. No wonder this book received the TCA, Teacher's Choice Award. Each page is a story with descriptive qualities and then there is a little bee that circles a dialogue bubble with factual information different but adding to the story to enhance clarity and answer questions the child might be asking hiim/herself. I learned so much from reading this book and was amazed at how much I retained because of the manner in which it was written, simple and direct. I might have rated this book a 5, but I felt as if someone ripped the last conclusionary page of the book out. It really needed one or two more sentences. I did enjoy the extra pages in the back of the book filled with bee websites, bee activities, good bee-havior and a list of other bee books.』

(HERE'S THE BUZZ)

How pleasant to find a children's book about an insect without anthropomorphic illustrations. Patricia Wynne's illustrations are bright, sunny, and accurate, allowing young readers to have a close up view of bumblebees as they really look. Done in watercolor and ink, her drawings of the differences between queens, drones, and workers are especially fetching.

Author Sayre's text is spare with informational asides, such as the number of species of bumblebees, their stinging habits, how nectar becomes honey, etc. The author has chosen to relate the life span of one queen bee, tracing the bee from early spring when she is underground to emerging and building her colony, and finally the birth of new queens and drones.

Youngsters may well be surprised at what one small bee can accomplish, and develop a healthy admiration for nature's creatures.

(Wonderful book for pre-teen girls)
『This is a wonderful book for young girls. How wonderful to have a new series of books for this generation of young girls. (Nancy Drew was the series when I was a girl, I wish this series had been around then too!)』

(action-packed teen fantasy)
『Anita Palmer was a typical London teenager until she learned who she really is. In the Realm of Faerie, she is Tania, the seventh daughter of the Royal House, who vanished five centuries ago just prior to her wedding to Lord Gabriel Drake. She crossed THE FAERIE PATH to meet her biological family and save the realm from her evil former fiancé Lord Drake.

Asked by her father King Oberon, Tania knows she must return to the earth she just left a few days ago to find her biological mom, Queen Titania, who disappeared when she did. However, her human parents are irate as they worried about Tania who had not come home for three days. Angry and relieved they ground her and forbid her from seeing her boyfriend Evan Thomas, who on the fairy plane is Edric Chanticleer. However, Tania understands Drake is crossing from THE FAERIE PATH to the mortal plane and must be stopped and Titania must be found; while Anita is expected to remain in her room under punishment.

This action-packed teen fantasy contains strong characterizing and realistic relationships especially those intruding on the princess. The story line is relatively simplistic as the young lead couple mounts a rescue of her biological mom while battling with Drake in an effort to save two realms. Although the ending sets up the third novel without fully closing the prime plot of this tale, Prewin Jones provides an intriguing entry as the daughter and her boyfriend try to stay alive while seeking THE LOST QUEEN.

(Fun, quick read)

Tania and Edric have entered the Mortal World (specifically London) in search of Tania's mother; Titania, Queen of the Faerie Realm. They are challenged with a series of obstacles to prevent them In their search. First off, news comes from the world of Faerie that the throne has been seized by the Sorcerer King, who has usurped the throne with the help of Gabriel Drake, Tania's erstwhile suitor, and her sister, Rathina, the woman who loves Drake. Secondly, the King has released the Gray Knights, a vicious and deadly band of assassins bent on killing Tania and anyone who could stand in the Sorcerer King's way. Third is almost more destructive and terrible, and that is Tania's mortal parents, who have forbade her from seeing Edric at all!

This series is getting better and better. It's still fluff, don't get me wrong, but I am so wrapped up in the story that I don't even mind it that much. It's a very quick read, and one that is surprisingly compelling. I do have to knock points off in parts for cheese factor, but overall the story is very engaging and readable. I like it much more than I thought I would and do intend to finish reading the next one.』

Tania is a princess of Faerie. And now she must return to the Mortal World.

Once, Anita was an ordinary girl on the eve of her sixteenth birthday. Now she has assumed her true identity as Tania, the long-lost princess of the elegant Faerie court. She and her true love, Edric, must return to the Mortal World to seek her Faerie mother, Queen Titania, who disappeared hundreds of years ago searching for Tania. In London, Tania is torn between her mortal life and her new one. Dangers lurk, and Tania's two worlds soon collide in amazing and frightening ways she never could have anticipated . . .

『An easy read on Queen Victoria. This book adds nothing new but simply rehash everything that you've read in other biographies on Queen Victoria. Its not a bad book it is very well written and I enjoyed it very much. But if your expecting any new information on her you won't find it in this book.』

(easy book about victoria)
『this good bood on basic facts about queen victoria and her era.this is a easy read.』

(Victoria "Lite")
『This book is a reflection on the life of Queen Victoria by someone who is clearly fascinated by her and who probably knows everything there is to know about her. It is easy to read and does not require you to know a great deal about her already in order to make any sense out of the book.
On the other hand, if you are already well-read about Victoria, this book, in my opinion, brings little that's new. But if you are willing to take the journey with this author and let him share his thoughts in the way usually reserved for a dear old friend, then you will find a pleasant un-bumpy ride along the way.』

Author Michael De-la-Noy takes us on a conducted tour of the many homes of Queen Victoria and crafts an intimate domestic portrayal that adds depth and complexity to her legend. Apart from Balmoral Castle, the home she loved best, there was Kensington Palace, where she was born; Buckingham Palace, where she was the first monarch to take up residence; Windsor Castle, the origins of which stretch back to William the Conqueror; the exotic Royal Pavilion in Brighton; and Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight, where she died. What emerges from this intimate domestic portrayal is, alongside her self-centeredness and obsession with the anniversaries of deaths, a great deal of humor, shrewdness and compassion. She often showed generosity and affection to her servants: not merely did she turn a blind eye to drunkenness below stairs but also showed real concern when they were ill. Although she drove the male members of her household to distraction by insisting on conducting business with them by correspondence, this very human and domestic queen retained the love and loyalty of all who served her. This book provides a revealing and thorough portrait of the domestic side of Queen Victoria's reign.

(Similarities between moden businessweman and Queen Esther)
『The book is about professional success. The two most important points for a successful career, emphasized by the authors, are professional image and mentors. "Find a mentor to open your eyes and doors. Mentors are more important to career success than hard work, talent, intelligence."

The authors analyze many case studies of successful women in modern organizations and find analogies in their actions with Queen Esther's actions. These similarities are very interesting.

I like this book because it has many references to good titles about mentors, professional image, business affairs, etc. After completing this book, you will definitely know what to read next.

(I Still Have No Idea)
『Bought this book based on a favorable review in a business journal I read ... in fact, bought one for a friend as well. After several attempts to get into this book I no longer care what Queen Esther knew .... My friend didn't care either.

(Ancient Wisdom Comes to Life!)
『The authors do an outstanding job of making an ancient story come alive with relevance for today. Esther provides us with a timeless role model who inspires and instructs us in principles of leadership and authenticity. The book has application for every workplace. An excellent read which is both practical and uplifting!

(Not Biblically Based)
『Although this book describes some great qualities a woman in business should strive to have, I do not care for the book selling itself that it is based upon the Old Testament Book of Esther.

From page one, this book states that it was Esther who achieved her position as queen and subsequently saved her people. That is not the point of the OT Book of Esther AT ALL. God put Esther in her position of influence and used her to save her people.

The authors also infer qualities that they ASSUME Esther possesses. If one reads the Scripture, though, very little of Esther's qualities are listed. For instance, Esther's willingness to act and bravery are examples that the Scripture unmistakeably tells us she holds.

However, the authors say things like Esther studied the palace protocol. How do they know that? It is not stated in the OT Book of Esther. The Bible states in Esther 2:15: "When the turn came for Esther (the girl Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her."

The passage only states that Esther didn't ask for anything that Hagai didn't suggest. This could be attibuted to many things.

This book is full of what the authors THINK Esther might have been like, and therefore should not be considered Scripturally-based. It seems to be taking advantage of those women wanting to apply Biblically-based principles to business by inserting human thoughts and opinions to what Esther MIGHT have been like.

And, please know that I believe and know that the Bible shows us how we should live our lives, in and out of business. Esther is also an incredible role model for all women, not just those in business.』

(Queen Esther... Royalty Reigns Supreme)
『What Queen Esther Knew takes the well-known Biblical story of Esther and uses her wisdom, smarts and savvy to relate to our current business world.

It was a pleasure to revisit the story of Queen Esther and learn how ancient wisdom applies to today. Connie Glaser not only has the ability to analyze behaviors that succeed and correspond those actions to ones we can take in our lives, she also breathes life into a favorite heroine who rose above adversity and helped save her people. It is an informative, easy to read book that is an inspiration as well as an education.』

". . . practical strategies to help you become the queen you deserve to be."

The story of Queen Esther, the orphan girl who became Queen of Persia and saved her people, has inspired millions and is the focus of a joyful celebration of thanksgiving--but there's more to Esther's story than meets the eye. Connie Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley found something remarkable--Esther's tale contains the ingredients every woman needs to succeed in the business world today.

From Esther's start as a contestant in the ancient world's largest beauty pageant to her triumph over the evil Haman, the authors use her example as a strategist, a risk-taker, and a persuasive speaker to provide a new archetype for contemporary women's success in business. Along the way, they answer questions such as:

- Do I really need a mentor, and if so, how do I find one?
- What can I do to be taken more seriously?
- How can I get the credit and recognition I deserve--without seeming pushy or aggressive?
- How important is risk-taking to my career success?

Smart, savvy, and strategic, Queen Esther provides an impressive role model for women today.

『Authors Connie Glaser and Barbara Smalley revisit an ancient question: How did an orphaned Jewish girl win a beauty contest and become the most powerful woman in Persia? They shape the tale of Biblical Queen Esther into an intriguing tutorial for women as managers. Esther’s development as a leader illuminates key strategies for success. These leadership tools are introduced through old/new parallels. For example, Esther’s mastery of "palace protocol" translates into learning corporate culture, her closeness with her wise cousin Mordechai creates a template to finding a mentor, her dustups with the villainous Haman become a primer for dealing with difficult people, and her bravery in saving her people underlines integrity and risk-taking. Glaser and Smalley alternate examples from Esther’s leadership with those of contemporary executives such as Avon CEOAndrea Jung and Enron whistle blower Sherron Watkins.

Each chapter begins with an excerpt from the Esther story and is followed by highly practical suggestions. Seasoned businesswomen may find some strategies familiar. And the writing is diminished by expert quotes that could have been paraphrased. Yet the author’s engaging and thoughtful examples rule the day. Their insights about a tale as old as time are relevant and inspiring.--Barbara Mackoff
