I enjoy reading about and researching the Tudors (by researching, I mean reading existing research). I have a book "All the Queen's Men: Elizabeth and her Courtiers" by Neville Williams. I loved the reproductions of paintings in that book, and so tracked down "Gloriana" to see and compare as many pictures of Elizabeth as I could. I must say the pictures are great, and plentiful. The text is well written too. It describes the art and explains the purpose of and evolution of the stylised portraits of Elizabeth. It's not the book's fault, but it was missing some things I hoped to find, as follows: few pictures of those close to Elizabeth (I shouldn't probably have expected this, but I like to look for family resemblances, and the looks of her suitors!); little text description of Elizabeth (based on the author's reseach, I hoped he'd tell us whether her eyes were blue or brown, how tall she was etc. Hard to tell from the art - the colors and proportions vary); and finally, some portraits that are described in the text are not illustrated. Not many, but I wanted to see more. That being said, you can't go wrong with this book if you want to study the portraits. I am very pleased to have this as part of my little Tudor library! (My copy is paperback, I have not seen the hardback.)』 『

She grew up in Brunswick with more freedom and love than usually received by one of her station. She had more than her share of scandals and practical jokes, but she still was offered the hand of the Prince of Wales. The marriage was ill fated, as she was the opposite of what George admired in women. He proceeded to humiliate her at every possible occasion, and only stayed with her long enough to get an heir. After his daughter, Charlotte, was born, he continued to make her life unlivable, perhaps encouraging her eccentric behavior. Her generous nature and tragic life won her the love of the people, causing more hatred from the Prince. He tried everything in his power to be rid of her, even trying to try her for adultery, and making his marriage dissolved. If you thought that was scandalous enough, wait until George became King, and Caroline demanded her rights!
This is the last book in the Georgian Saga that I read, making my collection complete! As with every book in this magnificent collection, it was very well written and enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to any fan of history, or reading in general.』
(Her Majesty's Own Worst Enemy) 『The story of Caroline of Brunswick, the injured Queen of England, is a fascinating and worthwhile read. According to Jane Austen, "She was bad, but she would not have become as bad as she was if he (Britain's George IV) had not been infinitely worse."
Jean Plaidy, a good story-teller, does an admirable job of matching history as it was to the story she writes. Still, she gets a few things wrong but this is due more to lack of access to key historical documents than to sloppy research.
After reading Flora Fraser's more recent, scholarly biography, The Unruly Queen : The Life of Queen Caroline, I found Plaidy errs in identifying the little Italian girl, Vittoria, as the daughter of Pergami when she was his niece. She also errs in calling Pergami, "Baron Pergami," at the time he first meets Caroline. He doesn't become a Baron until after Caroline visits Malta and buys an estate and the title of Baron for him. Still, Jean Plaidy takes the clay of scholarly biography and moulds a living, breathing character for the reader.
Caroline of Brunswick was, at turns, warm-hearted and maternal, and defiant and unconventional. Rejected by her husband as unfit, unkempt and embarrassingly gauche, she became even more so as a means of getting back at him. In the end, she only harmed herself.』
(The moving story of a rejected, tragic Queen) 『Surprisingly, the sad story of this unloved bride and wife is almost the same of Princess Diana. And she was also loved by the British people. I strongly recommend the book.』

If you would like books that are good companion volumes to this book are: Uncle Sam's Diet&The Step Diet (The Step Diet comes with a pedometer and is based on the data gathered by the National Weight Control Registry).

(Simple, effective weight loss!) 『There are tons of weight loss books on the market. Many of the authors have never struggled with their weight. Jackie and Diane are a mother and daughter who have lost 300+ pounds between the two of them. They know what it's like to be heavy.
The two tried a number of diets and studied the diet books on the market. They came up with the simple conclusion. If you want to lose weight you have to eat less. You don't have to combine foods in a certain way, cut out carbs or exercise till you are blue in the face. You simply have to burn more calories than you are taking in through diet and exercise.
Throughout the years there have been many diet plans that agree with Jackie and Diane. Cut calories, move a little more - lose weight. Weight Watcher's members count points, Jenny Craig doles out low calorie meals etc. Many of these diet plans enable members to lose weight. The problem is people gain the weight back and usually a few extra lbs with it!
Jackie and Diane advocate a different approach. They advocate a system called EUCALORIES or normal calories. They suggest you select your goal weight, making it a realistic one and then multiply that weight by 12. For example if you wish to weigh 135, you would multiply 135 by 12 and get 1620. Start eating 1620 calories on a daily basis and eventually you will wind up weighing 135. It will take longer than if you cut to say 1200 calories BUT you are more likely to stick with the program...forever! Weight loss can be enhanced by adding in more excercise.
There are drawbacks to the plan. Individuals do differ in their metabolisms, acitivity levels etc. So the actual calorie count per individual may vary. But in general Jackie and Diane say this method will work for most.
One area Jackie and Diane address is dietary guidelines ie how many grains, veggies etc. you should eat. They use government guidelines By following the recommendations you will know how much and what to eat daily. HOWEVER the beauty of the method is, if you don't follow the recommendations..so long as you count the calories (baring medical problems) you should reach your goals. For good health though, it is recommended that you follow the guidelines most of the time. The recommendation for fats and oils is listed on p. 53 as 2 servings per week. This did not look correct to me and I emailed the authors. They said it was a printing error and it should be 2 servings daily.
Eating more calories but still losing weight is much easier than sticking to a low calorie diet, however, there will still be times when one has trouble. Eating protein will help with control. It has been shown that folks that eat a little more protein eat fewer calories and stay in greater control. Though Jackie and Diane touched on nutrients etc. They did not share this information and it is really crucial for many people who lose control when they eat too many carbs. It's not a matter of giving up carbs..its a matter of making sure you eat enough protein to regulate sugar surges.
The mental aspect of weight loss are barely addressed in this book and for two women that were 300+ overweight I think they could have discussed this.
The book is set up so it shares the plan in the first half and the second half is primarily recipes. Recipes include mushroom smothered chicken, ham and egg fried rice, banana muffins and smashed parmesan and roasted garlic potatoes. Each recipe includes calories, fat, carbs and protein. There is also a daily menu plan for 28 days spelling out breakfast, lunch, dinner and allowing you to select your own snacks. The back of the book includes a snack and calorie guide.
Kudos for Jackie and Diane for their tremendous weight loss accomplishment and thanks for sharing this new way of looking at how to do it!

Eleanor is the second of four sisters, who are all destined to be queens-which they all were. Eleanor of course married Henry III of England and in her mind was the greatest King in the world. (Although her eldest sister, Marguerite would think otherwise as she was married to King Louis IX of France, who was such a great king that after his death became a saint.) Eleanor was determined to rule her husband and that she did, even if it meant the demise of the country.
Eleanor loved her family and her husband and was very devoted to her children. She took care of her sisters when they were in need, but was always quick to compare herself to them, thinking that she always had it so much better.
Eleanor was hated by the English-the Londoners in particular- because she brought her foreign family with her to England and demanded they be given high offices and extravagances which Henry could not pay for unless he taxed the citizens. And this he did, so often that the people revolted against him and his beautiful, overbearing queen.
Her husband, although very devoted and a loving father, ruled his kingdom rather weakly. He never wanted to disappoint his queen and so gave her all she wished, which in turn led to his (and his son Edward's) imprisonment. His jailer, none other than his brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, who Henry feared more than anything or anyone else. As usual, I was swept away to a world that only Jean Plaidy could bring to life. A savage world of romance and mystery, war and rebellion that I am in awe of.

But the information presented is stuff that for some unknown reason isn't covered in the general beekeeping texts. For example, this clearly explains why in-breeding bees can be very undesirable (or very desirable, depending on what you are trying to achieve). It explained to me for the first time, in an understandable way, the cause of "shot brood." I think this is an important book for people who want to go beyond simply having bees and want to understand what bees are all about. But it also contains a lot of practical information, such as detailed directions for constructing and use of robber screens for nuc boxes.』
(Lots of good information, but not well organized or prioritized) 『The beginning of the book that covers the logistics of getting ready to breed bees/rear queens is done fairly well. There is a lot of great information on what you'll need to do to get setup for the process. The section on genetics has a lot of less useful infomation and is poorly organized. I am not well versed in genetics, but I do have a strong background in Science (Math, Physics, and Chemistry) and one of my other hobbies besides beekeeping is cosmology. Most of the technical terms were not well defined and although the writter(s) of the genetics section of this book may be 100% correct and right on with there information, their ability to relate this information to the layperson (even one like me with an extensive background in science, just not genetics) was extremely poor.
If you are serious about bee breeding/queen rearing, you should probably have this book as an additional reference. As this is the first book I have read on the subject, I cannot recommend another book. I can recommend checking with your county extension offices and/or your state universities to see if they have more information on this subject or offer classes.

I took this same class in July of 2004. It offered hands-on experience where everyone in the class got a chance to graft queens and learn the process of queen rearing. Lots of good class-room time and literature. If you have the option of doing something like this, I would strongly recommend it.』

Although I love technical books, when it comes to honey bees, I found it straight-forward and a worthwhile text. Although I didn't have to rear my own queens for my experiment, it helped to understand how bees are bred for traits and the process that is involved with breeding honey bees.』

Few books deal so effectively with both the hands-on art of queen rearing and the scientific aspects of bee breeding as does this text. Professors Laidlaw and Page of the University of California, Davis, have prepared a comprehensive yet understandable book for both the beekeeper and the scientist.
Laidlaw, born in 1907, made important discoveries about breeding methods using instrumental insemination during the 1940s. He spent his professional life at the U. of California, Davis, perfecting II technology to the point where it is widely used in bee breeding techniques. Moreover, he worked with commercial queen producers and developed reliable methods for producing quality queen bees for either natural or instrumental mating.
Page has developed modern bee breeding concepts using computer methodology. His closed population breeding and mass selection techniques are widely used by bee breeders.
If you are a beekeeper interested in producing queen bees for your operation, this is an excellent book for your study. If you are a scientist interested in techniques used in bee breeding, this book is also for you.
The book is designed as a work-book textbook, with ample white space for notes and post-its. The twelve chapters cover history of bee breeding to a delightful 'Whimsy' section, and includes 'Song of the Queen Bee.'
There are many excellent photographs and illustrations to help you understand complex ideas.

IPhone 3G used's review (better translation needed) 『I was excited to find this book. I had not heard of it before but "The Count of Monte Christo" is one of my all time favorites. Then seeing all of these positive reviews, and since the subject matter is of interest, I couldn't wait to dig in. I can still say that the subject is interesting. And I tried plugging along with it - the reason it gets 2 stars instead of 1 is that the story moves along quickly enough to hold one's interest. However, after about 150 pages I just couldn't go on.
This has got to be one of the worst translations ever! I don't know if all of these positive reviews are for this particular edition, but there is no credit for translation, and it's easy to see why. I don't speak French, but it seems as if someone who is not a writer did a straight translation from the French, without taking into account any of the idiom or sentence structure differences. And the constant repetition is soy annoying: everyone is always saying "ah, ah" at the beginning of their sentences. Another character says "mordi", whatever that means, at the beginning of everything he says. And words repeated as a sentence introduction, apparently to convey emphasis and excitement: "Well! Well!" "Go! Go!""Kill! Kill!" and so on, are just too annoying.
I don't have a problem with period dialog, especialy in a book written 150 years ago. But a translation needs to convey the intent and style of the writer, while making it understandable, and readable, in the language, and period, it is being translanted into. And it should be consistent with the period. Characters saying "thanks", mixed in with very archaic language forms everywhere else, just makes no sense.
It was all just too irritating and I didn't feel like I was reading something by Dumas. There are just too many great books out there - don't waste your time on this one.』

(A true classic) 『Alexandre Dumas pere was a master of story telling. If he was still living today he would definitely write some of the most popular television series. This is how this novel reads, as a TV series, and this is also how it was written, since it was first released in 2 page instalements in 19th century french daily newspapers. Every page ends in some sort of dillema or with an item a suspense. There is never a boring moment. Of course, even if this book is based on actual historical events, it cannot be considered a true rendition of what really happened. Nevertheless, Dumas succeeds in making his characters so alive, that you feel you are living through the intrigues with them. You feel what they feel. A true masterpiece of literature, in any language; and by the way, the book is a thousand times better than the movie.』
