(Laughing out loud)
『This was the first Jennifer Coburn book I've read, and I really liked it. It took me on so many twists and turns, each one wilder and funnier than the next. The characters are completely odd but very likeable. I actually laughed out loud during a lot of it, which I hardly ever do (unless I'm reading Dave Barry, in which case I usually shoot coffee out my nose).』

(Funny and Fresh)
『Queen Gene follows Coburn's earlier book, Tales from the Crib. Although it shares some of the main characters introduced in Tales from the Crib, it really stands on its own merits. In both books, Jennifer Coburn deftly combines hilarious satire and witty social commentary with poignant and touching moments.

I read a wide range of books (mostly stolen from my wife's bedside table). These include Chick Lit like Sushi for Beginners (Marian Keyes) and Tara Road (Maeve Binchey) and "book club" books like 19 minutes (Jody Picoult). Left to my own devices, I tend toward comic novelists like Dave Barry and Carl Hiaasen.

The Queen Gene appealed to me in several ways. Jennifer Coburn made me laugh at the antics of her outrageous characters (a tiny dog and an elderly Aunt were my favorites). And yet, the main characters (Lucy, Jack, and a cast of supporting family and friends) are very human and appealing. Although this book does not tackle deeply disturbing topics like the school shootings in 19 minutes, it does tap into some deeper themes about love, acceptance, and even (in a very light way) death.

I really enjoyed the Queen Gene and I look forward to reading more of Coburn's novels.

(Another Disappointment)
『I've read other Jennifer Coburn books and been sorely disappointed, but I decided to give this one a chance because everyone raves about her as though she is a great author. Obviously a mistake and a waste of money. This book had no plot - none at all. A pushy, self-centered, drama-queen mother does not make for a plot. I had to force myself to finish this book (which I only did because I was on vacation and did not have other readily available options), and when I did, I was kicking myself for buying it. If you want to read a plot-less book with yet again, unlikeable characters, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend one of the other, better chick lit authors such as Meg Cabot, Jennifer Weiner, Jane Green, Marian Keyes, etc... Really just about anyone.』

(I didn't love this...)
『I am usually a fan of Jennifer Coburn - and read The Queen Gene last weekend. It is a fast read, like her others - but not so funny or clever.

Skip this one. There is better stuff out there to read during your precious free time.』

(Easily my favorite Jennifer Coburn book)
『This my second Jennifer Coburn book and, in my opinion, the best so far. The characters are great (Anjoli being my personal favorite), the dialogue funny and the story line engaging. I liked the characters so much, "Tales from the Crib" will be my next read.』

(A deep disappointment.)
『The subject of Sarah Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, is probably the deepest and most intense in the entire universe Starcraft is set in. I can't think of anyone I've talked to who has played through the game's campaigns and not both loved and hated her. She inspires awe and fear, passion and disgust; her dual nature makes her a fascinating subject. I will elaborate on it no more... on to the book.

Mr. Rosenberg did a good enough job piecing together the events of what happens between Kerrigan's capture by the Zerg and James Raynor's trip to Char to save her, finding himself in the company of the new Dominion forces and the Protoss. This is all very interesting and a good story to tell, but Mr. Rosenberg really just puts glue between the cracks from the original campaign and does almost no elaboration. Raynor feels protective of his troops and repeatedly "announces" it through narrative, but there is no development to really establish this on a firm ground--it's just something we have to accept. Even his relationship with Kerrigan feels held up only by the video game: Rosenberg's prose about their relationship resorts to cliches about love combined with cheap horror. He repeatedly cites Kerrigan's in-game line, "You pig!", as if that completely explains the sexual tension Raynor and Kerrigan experience before her abduction and transformation.

Truly, the best parts of this book--the parts that allow it to have at least two stars from me--involve the Protoss, who really don't develop into full characters until the last third of the book. That Raynor manages to repeatedly find them by wandering off into Char's vast desert is incredibly hard to believe (never mind that Char has edible, easily harvested flora, fauna, and water), but thank God he does, because they are the most interesting things on the drab planet Rosenberg has presented us with. Tassadar's initial skepticism of the Dark Templar and Zeratul's confrontation of Zasz and then Kerrigan work to develop what finally turns into a decent plot in the book, and the months the two Protoss factions and the Terrans spend together avoiding Kerrigan are the most exciting, as we see juxtaposed the merging of minds of Zeratul and Tassadar and the constant engagement of and retreat from Kerrigan's brood.

The climax of the book occurs with a "final battle" that truly is engaging, as the Protoss devise a way to lure Kerrigan's entire brood into a trap using Raynor as a conduit of their mental trickery. Kerrigan is nearly killed by the heroes, but all the same she flexes her muscles and puts them each in their places. Afterward, the inevitable recovery of Tassadar and the others by Judicator Aldaris is explained, and the plot is left to thicken.

If it weren't for so much going on in the latter third of the book, there would be nothing to read here. The writing remains elementary throughout, but at least the story is engaging and new towards the end rather than constantly regurgitative.

Still, the book's greatest failure, its lack of development of Kerrigan's character, its thrust forward into her transformation without dramatic pause (we only see glimpses of this in the prologue and Jim's dreams, and they, like many of the emotions in the book, are written in heavy cliche), is inexcusable. The next book featuring Kerrigan needs a writer who can develop her emotional conflicts in a mature and captivating way.

Two out of five stars for the decent plot at the end and the elucidation of Zeratul and Tassadar's first encounter. Otherwise... a deep disappointment.』

(Queen of Yawn-- Well, kinda.)
『Starcraft fans seem to have two opinions about this book: either it sucks, or it rocks. I find myself in the middle--

I'll try to explain what parts were good, and which were boring and really weird, at least for me (you need to know a tad bit about the Stacraft storyline, though, plus, there are some SPOILERS ahead).

So, the beginning is awesome, it's cool, has a lot of details and explains how Raynor got to Char at the beginning of the Zerg campaing in the Starcraft game. It also tells us a lot about how Jimmy has been striving to cope with the loss of Kerrigan since the end of the Terran campaing. I found this part, up until Raynor gets stranded on Char and all, to be really interesting and captivating--specially the parts that describe Raynor's new found role as a leader. Yeah, it was cool.

Let it be known, however, the book should've ended there, while it still could. Seriously.

The rest, up until the very final battle (which, apparently takes place in the 'Eye for an Eye' scenario from the Zerg Campaign), is extremely tedious and boring, and quite weird. I mean, just plain weird.

Let me explain: it felt like an endless tale of how Jimmy runs around 're-living' every dialogue that happened in the game, line by line, whith some minor changes to the story and some added encounters, while spying the elusive Protoss and the Zerg on Char.

Seriously, that's all he does for almost every page.
He goes around, spying on both Protoss and Zerg, watching how they fight, how the Protoss run away, hide, fight again, run away, hide, fight again, and so on and so on--whith Jimmy following all the way, trying to convince the Protoss to ally him against the Zerg and to get him and his men out of Char.
He sometimes talks to Tassadar, and has some dreams about Kerrigan (they have a psychic link of sorts, which is explained later in the book)-- but it was more like a National Geographic documentary than anything else. A really boring one.

Now, don't get me wrong, the book obviously has some new info and added storyline, but being sincere, it wasn't that much nor that good.
I just felt like getting this huge amount of filler and game scenes that I already knew all about. Sure, I appreciated the extra info and all, but again, it wasn't that interesting nor important.

Anyways, after 12 chapters of spying and chasing (there are 20 in total, plus the epilogue; the first 4 are cool, the last 4 are 'normal'--the rest pretty much felt like filler), Jimmy finally finds the Protoss and asks them to help him so he can help them against the Zerg. From here on we are given this weak clichéd subplot of how the Terrans befriend the Protoss and how Tassadar, Zeratul and Jimmy become Super Friends.

Next we have a huge final battle between our three Musketeers and Kerrigan, which, according to the book, ends in a draw or something--with Kerrigan saying something like: 'I'll be back!' and Zeratul replying: 'We'll se about that'--I mean, come on, what was that?--

And the epilogue is so corny.
Everyone finally appears (this roughly takes place in the fourth scenario of the Protoss campaing): Aldaris, Artanis (who apparently is 'you' in the Protoss campaign), and even the Hyperion, Raynor's capital ship, which had to leave Char because the Zerg were attacking it, the reason why Jimmy and his men are stranded there in the first place--but seriously, all in the final chapter? Damn, that's what I call a coincidense; a pretty weak constructed coincidense.
It was more like they wanted to end the book as soon as possible.

And that's it. That's basically what happens.
So, in conclusion, it isn't a horrible Stacraft book, I mean, it isn't Shadow of the Xel'Naga, but it isn't that good either--plus, the writing isn't something to die for. It has a couple of interesting stuff and expands a lot about Jimmy's relationship with Tassadar, Zeratul and Kerrigan (maybe the only worthwhile aspect of this book), but it's nothing really important to the general storyline--I mean, it felt that way for me.

Personally, when I finished the book, it felt nice to have read it, but only because it was a book about Starcraft. The cold reality was I was left with this weird void, like, I read the whole book and yet learned nothing really imporant, nothing that I didn't already know thanks to other sources--so, yeah, it felt like an apparent waste of time. Not a total waste of time, mind you, but it was very close to be one.

So, yeah, I recommend it--but you have been warned!

(Worst StarCraft book)
『This book proves the good old saying that quantity is not quality.
Although this book is probably the longest of all StarCraft novels it is a really disappointing read.

The very begining may just be a little interesting but after Jim Raynor reaches planet Char, it starts to feel boring and even stupid. The big scene when Kerrigan emerges from the chrystalis is in the first two chapters, whereas I think it shoud have been the culmination of the story. The very annoying thing was that the author decided to put the main character - Raynor - into every possible place even in stupidest circumstances. A real StarCraft fan would just cry out of anger for such ridiculous portrayal of the events on Char. Moreover, the battle scenes are also pathetic, it seems as if the writer was doing some kind of statistics work, he just writes how many fought and how many died, and descibes the action with only few mere sentences.

How good can a novel be if the best part of this book is the preview for the other StarCraft story "Ghost:Nova"!?

I have read a lot of books, a whole lot of sci-fi, and I can assure you this is the worst book I have read in my life. Even picture-books for children or fairy tales are more interesing!
Unless you have to have this piece of paper as a collection item, I suggest you not to buy it.』

(Pretty Good)
『This book is pretty good. I am only about half way done though. I like how it is following the story that was in the game. It get you a little deeper into the story than the game did. so so far its pretty good.』

(It's disgusting but I can't stop reading! =)))
『This book explains the tranformation of captured Kerrigan to the Queen of Blades. As Jimmy, how Kerrigan called James Rayner, travelled thousand of lightyears to save his love from the Zergs only to learn that he was a little bit too late as Kerrigan swore her new alliance to the Zergs. The novel reached its peak where Kerrigan convinced Rayner and his men to return from whence they came as she now belongs to the Zergs. Everything was explained in great detail, the sad fate that separated James Rayner from the love of his life.』
『Former marshal-turned-rebel Jim Raynor has broken away from the power-crazed Emperor Arcturus Mengsk. Enraged over Mengsk's betrayal of the powerful telepath, Sarah Kerrigan, to the ravenous Zerg, Raynor has lost all faith in his fellow humanity.

Yet, in the aftermath of Mengsk's treachery, Raynor is plagued by strange visions of Char -- a deadly, volcanic world haunted by horrifying alien creatures. As the nightmares grow in intensity, Raynor begins to suspect that they may not be figments of his imagination -- but a desperate form of telepathic contact. Convinced that the woman he loves is still alive, Raynor launches a hasty mission to rescue Kerrigan from Char. But deep beneath the planet's smoldering surface, Raynor finds a strange chrysalis...and is forced to watch in horror as a terrible, all-too-familiar entity rises from it.

Before him stands a creature of depthless malice and vengeance...

(Scottish Highlanders 1830-1910)
『This beautifully illustrated title serves as an introduction to the history and uniforms of the Scottish Highland regiments in British service from c. 1830 to c. 1910. As a previous review stated, this was something of a golden age in the history of the Highland Regiments, many of which distinguished themselves for courage, eagerness to battle, will to survive, and loyalty to their country and generals. It was only on March 28th of 2006 that 'Highlanders' was removed from the regimental names.

The first half of the book is a summary of their history as well as the recruiting system and the origins of the troops. The second half examines, in detail (though not to a technical, or, for the casually interested reader, dull, level) the colors and styles of the bonnets, jackets, kilts, plaids, trews, hose, spats, and sporrans of the 19th Century Regiments.

The color plates are perhaps the most impressive I have ever seen from Gerry Embleton, and depict leaders, pipers, and common soldiers from many of the most famous regiments in a number of poses. The wide and fearsome arsenal of these men, combined with their colorful, sometimes wild costumes made them the most impressive soldiers in the British Army of their day. This book is a fitting tribute to these valorous and flamboyant men and their illustrious legacy.』

("Golden Age" of the Scottish Regiments?)
『Osprey continues their fine series of military history with this book on the Scottish regiments in the 19th Century. This is what a number of people would consider the "Golden Age" of the Scottish regiments, who were held in high regard world wide. The book covers some interesting topics, such as the attempt to amalgamate some regiments, and standardize uniforms (tartans, etc.), which, at times, were flatly refused to accept. The book has the usual color plates of various regiments, of particular note for this reviewer, the pipers. Very interesting book covering a most significant time period for the Scottish regiments.』

(Another Example of one of Ospreys Better Efforts!)
『When this company puts its mind to it and plays to its strengths. (The History of the British Army)It can produce a 1st rate book as this shown here. Both the Text and the Illustrations are excellent on a very interesting and complex subject. The Highlanders are given their proper due by this slim tome. Well Done by all hands involved!
PS Its a Pity that White Hall has now done away with the Highland&Low land Regiments and basically all we have now is a Scottish Division.』

This book not only offers a tribute to the proud Highlander regiments who have served with distinction for over two centuries, but also offers an in-depth study of the period in which they made their name. As the British Empire dominated every corner of the globe, Queen Victoria's Highlanders served in a variety of campaigns from the Indian subcontinent to Africa. This title will study their organization, histories, and the evolution of their uniforms. Each of the famous regiments - including the Black Watch, the Gordons, the Argylls, and the Camerons - will be covered and the full glory of their romantic, tartan uniforms revealed.

(Easy read but far too many inaccuracies)
『Nice easy read, quite entertaining but way too many inaccuracies. James, Duke of Monmouth was NOT James, Duke of York's son, for instance. I'm not a history professor by any means, but it seemed like nobody proofread this book. If you want something just as entertaining with no factual mistakes, buy Eleanor Herman's Sex With Kings.』
Prion’s internationally bestselling Sex Lives series presents lighthearted accounts of the sexual escapades of major figures in history, politics, religion, the arts, and film. Irreverent and gossipy, the books are packed with carnal tidbits and eye-opening revelations. The headlines of Royal infidelity and divorce that are the bread and butter of today's tabloid press are nothing new. People have always been captivated by the sexual behaviour of Royalty, and as author Nigel Cawthorne reveals, there has been plenty of it. In humorous style, Cawthorne chronicles the ongoing sexual farce across thecenturies from Hal the Horny (Henry VIII) via Edward the Caresser (Edward VII) to the present day antics of Prince Charles who, unlike his predecessors, chose a mistress who was far less attractive than his official partner.

(A Succinct Summary Emphasizing Ideas)
『This is a relatively short book with a page count of 128 (including title page, contents, etc., and advertising at the back!) but it is filled with useful information that emphasizes ideas more than an endless list of variations. It is probably the best overall QGD survey book in my sizeable (550 volume) chess library.

The book presents 25 complete games. This is a great approach for the class player (compared to a variations tree) because you see the middle games and even endgames that arise. The games are spread over 8 chapters which cover the Alatortsev variation, Tarrasch Defense, Exchange and Blackburne, Ragozin and Vienna, Semi-Tarrasch, Cambridge Springs and Laskers, Tartakower, and Classical. As you see the coverage is wide, treating to at least some degree (one or more games) the major variants which are in play. The notes also treat (briefly) many other options including oddities such as the Dutch-Peruvian Gambit. Games are from modern practice.

While plenty of variants are presented in the notes (certainly enough to cover the ground and be useful) the book is really on the "chatty" side and there is plenty of text which explains concepts and ideas. This is all made to fit in a low page count by means of slightly oversized pages and a rather small font size. However, the diagrams are large, clear, and copious. Even though I can't play blindfold, I am able to read a lot of the book without the aid of a chess set and board.

There is no real white/black bias. Ideas for both sides are discussed making this book suitable for basic repertoire development for either color. I say "basic" repertoire development and what I mean is that there is more than enough here for the class player, but at a high level of play (perhaps expert and up) you will want specialist books which cover your favorite lines in more detail.

Overall: a very nice effort and well worth the cost. Don't be put off by the low page count. More is not always better.』

『Chess Explained books are not theoretical works in the traditional sense, but more a series of lessons from a chess expert with extensive over-the-board experience with an opening. You will gain an understanding of the opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.

The Queen's Gambit Declined is one of the most important and popular of chess openings. While an immensely solid and classical choice for Black, it has remained highly topical for more than a century. Both sides have ways to create imbalance and test their opponent's skills and knowledge in a full-blooded struggle. Most of the World Champions have taken both sides of the QGD, with Spassky and Karpov especially notable defenders of Black's cause. In addition to the traditional main lines with Bg5, White has at his disposal the Exchange Variation, and the Bf4 system, both of which can be handled in highly aggressive style if he wishes. Rizzitano covers all these lines and a plethora of other important lines, focusing on the fundamental ideas on which they are based.』

(Quick and insightful reading for women of all ages..)
『Though I believe this book was targeting a younger audience, but in reading it I found some insights that I felt were pertinent to me (and I'm over 30!). I think this book not only speaks to girls but women who still have the little girl inside. Highly recommended.』

(Inspirational and motivational)
『Susie gives an inspirational account of the four areas that one needs to address in order to build confidence which will lead to unleashing your ultimate beauty.

The four keys are:

* Identify and effectively develop your spirituality - Susie discusses developing your spirituality by finding out what makes you tick, staying positive and developing an attitude of gratitude. The latter two she learned a lot about from her mother, who she calls "Mami" a hard-working, resilient woman. Susie says, "effectively developing your spirituality is the most importing key because knowing who you are empowers you, improves your self-esteem, and imbues you with confidence.

* Discover and embrace your relationships - we learn that developing relationships are important for self-esteem because strong bonds with family, friends, and mentors provide a support system when and where you need them. Throughout the book, Susie describes her relationship with her mom. Even though she may have disagreements with her from time to time, she respected her opinion and told her what her dreams were especially since her mother always gave her positive encouragement. To this day, Susie says she calls her mom to tell her what is happening in her life and uses her as a sounding board.

* Take control of your health and body image - Susie says that taking control of your health and body image will lead to confidence because how you feel in the inside will reflect on the outside. Here she talks about the importance of eating right - not showing up to work starving and not being able to think - and exercising. This section is also great for those who don't have anyone who can tell them about clothes, fashion, hair, make-up and little tips for homemade spa treatments.

* Believe in your dreams and make them a reality - we find out the importance of determining your passion, researching how to going about getting what you want, creating a realistic plan for achieving it, and the determination and perseverance to keep going for it until you succeed.

"Confidence Is Queen" is a great book full of inspiration for any young woman looking to do something positive with their lives but I recommend this book for any one who needs a little more confidence.

(Excellent Theme of Positivity and Perseverance.)
『In a time where there is increasing pressure from the "public" to give the government more power over our children's development and future, Suzie inspirationally reminds us all what truly successful individuals already know. There is no substitute for confidence, positivity, taking personal responsibility for one's actions, and the need for a strong parental role model in a child's life. (The Queen Who Couldn't Bake Gingerbread)
『Twenty-five years ago I read this book to the first graders where I was student teaching and we all loved it. I have been reading it to children (and adults) ever since because it illuminates the truth that we often SEEK relationships to fulfill our needs rather than to take care of them ourselves. This picture book makes it easier to talk about breaking gender stereotypes and becoming the person we were intended to be.
It's also a HUGE hit because we always serve warm gingerbread to everyone while a musician visits to play the slide trombone.

(Responsible for your own happiness)
『This is a wonderful and sophisticated tale about expectations. A king goes looking for the perfect wife: beautiful and wise and can bake gingerbread just the way he likes it. Of course, the perfect wife doesn't exist and as he becomes ready to accept a good enough princess, he runs into various snags. Eventually he will settle for the wise Princess Calliope, but runs into the snag that she is looking for a husband who can play the slide trombone. They compromise and vow to never mention gingerbread or slide trombones again.
But of course they do. Eventually they do some soul-searching, realizing that the other married them for being wise and kind and mentioning the forbidden words was neither. Eventually they solve their problem brilliantly, settling it once and forever.
This is a must read for anyone getting married. It reinforces the wisdom that each of us is responsible for our own happiness, among other lessons.』

『When the King of Mulligatawny is unable to find a queen who bakes gingerbread, he finally realizes there are more important things to consider in selecting a wife.』

(An Inspiring look at a very determined woman)
『As far as I know, this is the only adult biography of Bessie Coleman, the pioneer African-American aviatrix. Rich notes that she was hampered by a lack of personal material, but has none the less produced a fascinating biography. Coleman, a woman of modest background, overcame barriers of wealth, race and gender. A national celebrity, especially among Blacks, she was even able to attract the attention of white Americans. Through her airshows and lectures, and against a great deal of hostility, she was a tireless campaigner for equality for both sex and gender. Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut has written an afterword. For some reason, this is after the notes and bibliography, but before the index.

There are a variety of biographies of Coleman aimed at various ages of children. While reading this, I also read Bessie Coleman; first Black Woman Pilot by Connie Plantz. This is of course the most detailed and contains a considerable amount of historical and contextual information. Both this and Plantz's book are lavishly illustrated, happily with a number of different pictures, and I recommend both to anyone interested in visual information.

The book has copious notes, a lengthy bibliography and an index.

『Here is the brief but intense life of Bessie Coleman, America's first African American woman aviator. Born in 1892 in Atlanta, Texas, she became known as "Queen Bess", a barnstormer and flying-circus performer who defied the strictures of race, sex, and society in pursuit of a dream. 30 duotone photographs.』
