(Queen Mary 101 Review.)
『Great book giving facts and figures and I did like the format it used in asking questions one would ask if given the chahnce. Read it from cover to cover and found it very good reading and due the fact I had travelled on this ship way back Dec 1950 as a young lad coming to this country for this first time it meant a lot to me to refreash my memory of that trip.』
『Even before her launch RMS Queen Mary earned a special place in history. Job number 534, as the new Cunard liner was known, was Britain's largest passenger ship by far. In 1930 construction was begun, but as the stranglehold of The Depression tightened, Cunard announced that work was to cease. The half-finished hull sat on Clydebank for over two years, but was far from forgotten.

For the people of Britain, 534 became a beacon of hope; a barometer of the nation's economy. And so it was no coincidence that on the day work at John Brown's shipyard resumed, prices on the London Stock Exchange shot up. A new age had dawned. Without so much as entering the water, the new ship had won the hearts and minds of the British public. A few months later the first of a long line of 'firsts' began for the new liner. Britain's first ship over 1000 feet in length was ready to be launched. It would be the first occasion of its kind it to be reported live by BBC radio; and for the first time the consort of a reigning British monarch would do the honors.

The liner's 31-year ocean-going career would break countless records and re-write history. And her popularity soon spread across the Atlantic as she won the affection of America. Today she is enjoying retirement in the sun in Pier J, Long Beach, California as a floating hotel and events centre. Author David Ellery poses the 101 most crucial questions about her, from design, construction and machinery to stories concerning her name, interior design, and retirement, and provides detailed but concise answers to each one.

How fast was Queen Mary? Is it true the Queen Mary is haunted? Is the new Queen Mary 2 anything like the original Queen Mary? The result is a thoroughly engaging and informative book that provides the essential information to the world's very last remaining 1930s superliner.』

(Thar She Blowhard!)
『Babbit Takes a Cruise could be the subtitle. A man with little taste or sophistication spends a lot of money on mediocrity--and brags about it. First of all, the author cannot so much as drink a glass of wine without quoting the price. Sadly, he has been victimized by a cunning wine steward who gives him all the overpriced, boring bottles on board. The poor sap spends thousands of dollars on "big names" - among which there is not one single exciting, challenging or interesting wine. But no matter, Mr. Naugahyde Palette wouldn't know good from bad. It's the price tag that gets him hot. In fact, when he finally does offer someone a drink, he feels called upon to break down the cost, ounce by ounce, to let us know exactly what how much that single glass set him back. A paunchy, little fellow who looks to be in h is 60s, the author admits to wearing a Speedo, which is sufficient reason to close the book. He also tells us more than we need to know about his sex life with his wife...a sturdy-looking woman with squared off Dutch Boy bangs and a rather grim smile. She looks like the mean librarian everybody was afraid of in grammar school. Oh, and food. What would a cruise be without food? The writer give us the menus, but tells us nothing about the quality...his orders tend toward the Prime Rib Baked Potato kind of thing, which is neither surprising nor informative. At a restaurant in Thailand, where the food is based on a centuries old cuisine that served to the Siamese Kings and their families, the writer lists the boiled rice as one of his favorite dishes. Probably because it didn't have all that annoying "flavor" one finds in Thai food. You just know he was comparing everything to the Pad Thai with Ketchup back at their favorite Milwaukee All You Can Eat Asian Buffet. At various points, the writer also displays a nasty little anti-semitic stripe, an attitude toward women that indicates he has never been near an attractive one, and a pomposity that is as funny as it is ill-placed. But really, at this point you realize just what a petit bourgeois gasbag he is, and you no longer care. Don't read this book. Don't buy it. It's boring and inane. It's not even fun to laugh at this windbag after the first few pages and one cringes to think that as he sails around the world, people will look at him and think "typical American."』

(TAKE AN OCEAN VOYAGE FROM YOUR RECLINER)
『Last week I went on a 91 day cruise from the comfort of the Lazy-Boy recliner in my den. It was the perfect journey for me since the thought of going on a cruise, any cruise, terrifies me.

Needless to say, I've never been on a luxury ocean liner, but as I read, I could picture the ship, the people, the accommodations, the food, and the activities available to the passengers. I found the tidbits thrown in about different lectures on board the ship to be interesting.

I enjoyed reading about the excursions the author and his wife took when the ship docked at various ports. The entire book was a learning experience for me, and I enjoyed every page and new experience.

I don't agree with the negative reviews of this book. I enjoyed reading it and don't feel it was a waste of money. I'm not going to donate the book because on a rainy day when I'm bored, I'll probably go back and read it again!

(Dont give this guy the satisfaction of a purchase.)
『If you can manage to get through the authors condescending ridicule of others, which I'll bet you can't, this might just be the book for you. This man must be the cruelest person to have ever set foot on the QE2. Dr. Patten you might be at the bottom layer of Dante's Hell, not the Rabbi that you blast page after page. I hope you realize that the more money you have, in this case, the less interesting you become. I tried but could not get through this waste of a book, and I will not be donating it to the library, to the recycle bin it shall go. I want a refund from this creep. I wanted an account of a world cruise on the QE2 and all I got was this lousy diary filled with obvious hatred and judgment toward others written by a self-righteous dirty old man.
Wow that rant sounded like Bernie himself wrote it.
The only good thing about this book was when I decided that no more of this guy's toughts would go through my head and stopped reading it. The fact that this book takes place on the QE2 is the only reason it got 2 stars.』

(Waste of Time and Money)
『If you're looking for a book in which a physician on holiday on the QEII calls his fellow passengers cripples and grey heads, this one's for you. If you are interested in his sex life and the number of times he's been propositioned by every woman on earth and on the ship, this one's for you. It's so bad you can't stop reading.

I don't know whether the reader hopes for some redeeming quality in the man, (he seems strangely likable), or that the reader is fascinated by the narcissism, but for sheer self indulgence personified this one's about as bad as it gets.

There are some good things, however: there are two good jokes, and the lectures sound interesting.

Absolute waste of time and money.

(Adventure on the High Seas)
『This is the "best and easiest" gift-book to come along in years! The combination of luxury and good story-telling in a classic venue is unbeatable. Your friends will thank you Mt friend, a retired Navy Captain, was pleased to find "everything you'd want" about sea travel in one delightful package.』
『HMS Queen Elizabeth 2 is the most celebrated craft afloat and one of the greatest technical achievements of the 20th century. In her construction and maintenance are involved almost every science, profession, and trade known to civilisation. On her bridge stand officers, who besides being the pick of the Royal Navy, have passed rigid examinations in all studies pertaining to winds, tides, currents, navigation, and the geography of the sea. For 91 days, author Bernard M Patten MD, sailed around the world on this ultimate cruise ship. What was it like onboard this most luxurious of luxury liners? "Marvellous, simply marvellous", he assures the reader with obvious enthusiasm that spills off every page. Determined to give the reader the complete QE2 experience, Patten and his wife Ethel systematically stayed in progressively better accommodations from the least expensive class (Mauritania 5) to the Penthouse Suite, which included their own butlers, Geoffrey and Paul. Along with the Pattens, readers will experience (vicariously) every deck, every restaurant, and every level of luxury that this incredible ocean liner has to offer. Whether you are a cruise buff, or planning your own stay aboard this fabulous ship, or just want to take a trip in your imagination on a cold rainy night, "Cruising on the Queen Elizabeth 2" will provide you with interesting information, entertaining stories, and ample pleasures.』

(Entertaining but needed more complex insight)
『Two profs write 211 pages describing the details including the antics of this fabulous Key West club at the 801 Cabaret. The narratives are descriptive of the relationships between the drag queens, the personal histories of each of them, and vivid descriptions of their performances. You'll be entertained, however, I personally wish they went into more complex detail as to their repeated reiterrations at the end of each chapter that drag queens are questioning gender, femininity, masculinity, etc. We already know this. How about breaking down what all this means instead of quickly glossing over it in the last chapter?』

(A Must Read for All)
『I just finished reading this book and was very impressed with how well the authors bring you into the lives of the draq queens at the 801. I have been to Key West many times and have been to several of the drag shows at the 801. While reading the book I felt like I was there sharing in the experiences and lives of the 'girls' who do so much good for their community and for the gay community. This book is a must read for all people...gay, straight bi etc. (especially if you don't know much about this facet of the LGBT community). You will get a kick out of all the antics, gain a better understanding of drag queens, and will grow to appreciate&love all of the girls covered in this book. Also...If you love Key West then you will love this book. The authors really express the mood and spirit on this island that makes so many tourists wish they were locals.』
It's Saturday night in Key West and the Girlie Show is about to begin at the 801 Cabaret. The girls have been outside on the sidewalk all evening, seducing passersby into coming in for the show. The club itself is packed tonight and smoke has filled the room. When the lights finally go down, statuesque blonds and stunning brunettes sporting black leather miniskirts, stiletto heels, and see-through lingerie take the stage. En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" blares on the house stereo. The crowd roars in approval.

In this lively book, Leila J. Rupp and Verta Taylor take us on an entertaining tour through one of America's most overlooked subcultures: the world of the drag queen. They offer a penetrating glimpse into the lives of the 801 Girls, the troupe of queens who perform nightly at the 801 Cabaret for tourists and locals. Weaving together their fascinating life stories, their lavish costumes and eclectic music, their flamboyance and bitchiness, and their bawdy exchanges with one another and their audiences, the authors explore how drag queens smash the boundaries between gay and straight, man and woman, to make people think more deeply and realistically about sex and gender in America today. They also consider how the queens create a space that encourages camaraderie and acceptance among everyday people, no matter what their sexual preferences might be.

Based on countless interviews with more than a dozen drag queens, more than three years of attendance at their outrageous performances, and even the authors' participation in the shows themselves,Drag Queens at the 801 Cabaretis a witty and poignant portrait of gay life and culture. When they said life is a cabaret, they clearly meant the 801.

(The Winter King and the Summer Queen)
『Although the text is not first-rate, the beautiful illustrations carry the story. As an elementary school librarian, I use this book with kindergartners, who love it and check it out over and over. A large bulletin board version of the King and Queen serves as a takeoff for vocabulary development--winter words are written on die-cut snowflakes, icicles, and clouds, and summer words are written on flowers, bees, bunnies, etc. Although not scientifically accurate, the pourquoi story satisfies young children's sense of wonder.』

(Poorly written and biased against winter)
『I think this is a pretty bad children's book, for two reasons.

First, the writing is poor in many ways. Some words are unnecessarily difficult for a young child to understand, and sentence structure and flow are very choppy at times. It's almost as if a third-grader and a twelth-grader took turns writing the sentences.

Second, the book claims that Summer is "good" and Winter is "bad". The two forces initially are at peace, but then Winter starts freezing people. Summer decides to rescue them by warming them up. Then two sides decide to negotiate a peace. Huh? It's just so ridiculous. I would have preferred a story that shows that both summer and winter as being equally valuable, but just different. I get the feeling the author lives up north somewhere and just personally hates the cold.』

(Neato, I must say...)
『When I ordered this book, there was no other review for me to go upon. I judged this book solely on its cover and I am very pleased. The pictures are beautiful (in an ordinary way) and fit the story very well. However, they are not in the same league as K.Y. Craft or Mercer Mayer's fairy tale work. One thing that I found very helpful within this book for a classroom is the diversity pictured. The King and Queen's friends are all different colors and different cultures, which teaches young children an important lesson. My favorite is Maya Monsoon. The story also teaches children the importance of compromise and settling arguements with words not actions. The story is a creative way to explain the changing of the seasons and weather, with the neat addition of the King and Queen's friends. This book does a nice job explaing something quite complicated to young children. Enjoy!』
『Learn an important lesson about balance and acceptance in this exciting tale about how people learn to share the Earth, and how the rotating seasons of winter and summer are born.』

(cut clutter)
『The Queenn of Clean books are always a great big help, due to that I am a caregiver for my mother and I am married with three children. This book has helped me out on many ocassions to organize my home and a lot of tips on how to keep your home organized.』

(A "hoarder" no more)
『I was raised to be a packrat. My mom's house was practically unlivable for a time and as I entered adulthood my home slowly was becoming rat's nest. Full of things that "I just might need some day" or "This item reminds me of _____, so it's a keepsake." I'm that type of hoarder who hates to throw out "Perfectly good things that can still be used" even if I'd never use them. When I actually started avoiding going home because I couldn't stand to be there I said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH but I felt so overwhelmed and didn't know where to start!

I picked up this book "The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter" by Linda Cobb and it saved me from my hoarding. It gave me very practical advice that I could actually use. It didn't judge me "the packrat" it just said "It is what it is and here's how to fix it."

What really made it all click for me was the focusing on small areas. Take one drawer or one counter and tackle it. Once that battle has been won you feel so great that you want to continue. Little by little my entire home became clutter free. This book made me realize that I didn't need these items. That in the grand scheme of life if I didn't save every nice gift bag or old butter container, it doesn't matter one bit. And while having some items as keepsakes are nice and should be kept, my memories are in my head, not in every little thing must be saved for the memory to be cherished.

My life is so much better now that I don't hoard. I actually like my home and enjoy being there. Thanks Linda Cobb.

(Very practical...gets you started right away!)
『I really should not be writing a review of this book yet because I have only read the intro and first two chapters! I'm really excited, though, and want to share. This book is great--and I am seeing results in my home already. The book offers practical suggestions that you can implement right away. As I have said, I just started Chapter 3, but I have already straightened my entryway and family room--the rooms covered in Chapters 1 and 2. I like the fact that you can get up during the middle of a Chapter and make a change, however small. The book is that practical. For the family room, the Queen suggested looking at the room with pen and paper in hand to see exactly what the clutter and disorganization was made up of. I did that and learned that my blankets (you know, the ones you throw over yourself when you are watching a great TV show) had no "home". I immediately followed a tip in the book and put them in a wicker hamper that I already had. Voila! Problem solved. In my entry, the kids backpacks and my purse had no home; they were never in the same place for two days in a row. I placed an old bench I had in there. Now the kids can sit when they put their shoes on and I know where their backpaks and my purse are--on that bench! Again, I am just getting started and these are small steps but they have made me feel good. I'm getting things started and making small but effective changes. I can't wait to read m o r e ! My only regret is that I bought the ebook and it seems that I am unable to print it. I wish I had a hard copy to take with me to read during those few precious moments I have to do so!

(A waste of time and money)
『Given the glowing ratings by previous reviewers, I expected good things from this book. I kept it aside for my beach reading on our holiday - thank goodness I brought something else. This book cromprises a bunch of no-brainer solutions that my seven-year-old could easily come up with and, rather than prescribing solutions that really conquer clutter, provides tips on ways to stash it out of sight...presumably so the reader has room for more clutter.』

(Unusual, but highly practical, ideas for storage and more)
『Most books about clutter boil down to: look at what you've got, decide whether you want what you have, and figure out what to do with what remains. It is in this last category -- figure out what to do with what you keep -- that this book really shines. It contains a pile of suggestions for kitchen organization and some particularly helpful ideas about dealing with bedrooms and closets.

In addition, there is concise, but thorough coverage of how long to keep everything from condiments to tax returns. This is the longest list I have ever seen of how long foodstuffs keep in the fridge. The material is easy to read and use. Even the best organized person will find something to use in the plethora of information and ideas. We less than well organized folks will find a lot of advice that we will be able to put to use right now, and encouragement to do it. A great buy.』

『Great product for the price. A short history for each neighborhood is
followed by nostalgic yesteryear and as it looks today photos of important areas or structures--lots of photos.
Each neighborhood has a street map and as an appendix, each has a complete
demographic review.』

This up-to-date, intimate portrait of the 99 neighborhoods of Queens is a wonderful tribute to the borough’s past history and present diversity. Detailing the history, people, and cultural activities of each neighborhood, the book is generously illustrated with more than 200 photographs, both contemporary and historical, and over 50 new maps that chart the precise neighborhood boundaries.

With two airports (La Guardia and JFK), Shea Stadium, and Aqueduct Racetrack, Queens is a destination for millions of travelers and visitors each year. But those who live in the borough’s neighborhoods know that it offers much more: parks, bridges, colleges and universities, museums, shops, restaurants, and other institutions and sites that testify to its more than 350-year history. From Astoria to Woodside, with points in between, Queens, the most diverse county in the country, offers a cornucopia of cultures, sights, tastes, and sounds.

With input from residents, historians, demographers, politicians, borough officials, shopkeepers, and many others,The Neighborhoods of Queenscaptures the unique character of each neighborhood. The book features practical tips (subway and bus routes, libraries, fire departments, hospitals), quirky and unusual neighborhood facts, and information on famous residents. (Not as good as the others)
『I bought this book because I absolutely loved the first four books. I did not, however, find this one anywhere near as funny. Although there were a few laughs, overall the book was just OK. I could not put the first few books down, and was really looking forward to reading this, but found myself switching to another book after the first few chapters. I did eventually read the whole book, but just did not really enjoy it. The Wedding Planner part is funnier than the Divorce Guide. Maybe she just has too many books and not enough ideas to go around and keep it fresh. I would be reluctant to purchase future books without checking them out first.』

(Belly laughs for when you really need them)
『No matter where you are in your marriage-anything from planning to meet the future groom to trying to decide how big to make the bonfire of the ex husband's crap-this is the book that tells a woman most of the things her friends are trying to tell her nicely. But they love her so they can't be nice about it-so get a big, funny Southern woman to tell you what you need to know. In classic Southern way, Browne regails you with stories of her friends, leaves you in stitches, offers a few yummy recipes (who wants to diet when something so important is happening?), and helps you plan any number of parties you need to feel. Her conversational tone gives the image that, were you to visit to Mississippi for the SPW march, you could walk up to her and give her a bear hug.

Just a note-I get quickly annoyed by the tone many authors take-the whole "New York is the best place in the world and anyone else is a poor backwards rube." It can take away from any other hillarity that follows. Browne, being a proud Southerner, does the opposite: "You're a Yankee! Why bless your heart. Don't y'all want to move to where it isn't snowing all the time? Oh, and get over yourself." I find that hillarious, but if it grates on your nerves, skip this helpful, funny, and friendly book. It's your loss.』

(Jill's losing it)
『I bought the cd because I really enjoyed the first two so much.

I laughed once in the third cd. This book is a rehash of many stories from the first three, with a bit of new stuff thrown in.

Don't waste your money.』

『I bought this book and read it to a friend going through a nasty divorce. Not only did she laugh, she said absolutely every word rang true. The wedding planner half is silly fun with a few good ideas thrown in, but any woman who's had to kick out a Man Who Needs Killing will relish the divorce guide and all its wicked humor.』

(Hilarious)

(got me from the first page)

This was my second Linda Howard book and what a wonderful read! I finished it in less than a day.

I love a book with a strong beginning...something that keeps me intrigued. And there was plenty of sexual tension between Niema and John throughout the story; what happened in Ronsard's office was unique. Also, how often do you read a book where you actually have empathy for the villain?

I'm on to find another Linda Howard book to read.』

(All the Queen's Men)
『This is a very good book and very entertaining. I like all of Linda Howards books. She is an excellent writer and her stories are always spellbinding. Ms. Howard can't write books fast enough for me!』

(Great book with ok ending)
『This book was great! Like previous reviews said it's a page turner for sure. The title didn't make sense to me, still trying to figure it out but the characters and events are awesome! John and Niema know each other from 5 years ago when her husband Dallas dies, and John promises to take care of Niema. They meet again 5 years later, where John asks her to help him with an assignment. She is hesitant at first, but then comes to the realization that she enjoys the thrill and excitment behind the danger of the job.

John and Niema's relationship evolves through the story and builds up pretty good. Towards the end of the the book otehr reviewers said the sex scene was border line rape. I disagree. That really discouraged me, but when I read it it wasn't what you'd think. It's all part of the plan, thats all I can say.

So after that scene there relationship is evolved, and the end of the book is suspenseful and really good, and then all of a sudden you hit the last page and are like "what?" The ending was not my favorite. Nothing was really answered (when Niema starts to question her feelings for John). I was disappointed with the ending and think Linda Howard could have done a better job.

If you want a really good page turner book, romance, and suspense then this is the book for you. Just don't be disappointed with the ending, its not horrible, but could have been better.』

(Ill Conceived Romance With An Absurd Spy Component)
『A really rather silly and ill constructed romance. It tries to do double duty as an espionage, but just can't manage it.

Fair enough that that the male lead, John Medina, is obsessed with the female lead, Niema Burdock; such is romantic escapism. But to suppose a healthy man is silently obsessing over the course of a 5 year period is pushing it even in this genre.

Where the plot really breaks down, though, is when he admits to taking her on a dangerous mission simply because he wants her around. When he further delays their rescue because he does not want to give her a chance to leave him without talking - well, it goes beyond absurd. You simply cannot take such a character seriously as professional.

I also had problems with the physical component of the relationship, which starts off with a scene in the office of an enemy, where they pretend to have sex in order to avoid suspicion. Problem is, their pretend sex turns into real sex, and even though Niema is portrayed as climaxing, the undertone is a little too close to rape for me.

There is also a secondary sex scene involving su

Freudenheim, who wrote about the New York City borough of Brooklyn in Brooklyn!: The Ultimate Guide to New York's Most Happening Borough, now tackles Queens. She organizes the book by neighborhood, with each section containing information on how to get there, things to see and do, history, shopping, restaurants, and points of cultural interest. Walking tours and brief essays by community members are also included. Small, detailed neighborhood street maps are helpful for finding attractions and navigating the area. Freudenheim presents some very compelling reasons to visit, such as the ethnic food, world culture, and proximity to New York's airports (you'll be passing through, anyway), and further provides practical information like tips on decoding Queens' complicated street addresses. Not every restaurant or attraction is covered and reviews are brief, but the guide is packed with useful and entertaining information and nicely fills a niche by covering the borough exclusively. Freudenheim's enthusiasm for Queens is contagious. Recommended for libraries with large travel collections, particularly for those collecting New York travel guides.--Louise Feldmann, Colorado State Univ. Lib., Fort Collins』

("New York's Best Kept Secret.")
『Ellen Freudenheim's "Queens: What to Do, Where to Go (And How Not to Get Lost) in New York's Undiscovered Borough" is a delightful guidebook to an often forgotten part of New York City. As the author points out, "were it to secede from New York City today, Queens would be the fourth largest city in America." If you enjoy diversity and value history and culture, Queens is the place for you: 120 languages are spoken here, ethnic food stores and restaurants abound, and Queens features cultural institutions, historic sites, and sports venues that are well worth a visit. Like so many formerly underappreciated parts of New York City (many in Brooklyn), Queens is being rediscovered and is on the upswing.

After an informative and witty introduction, Freudenheim devotes thirteen chapters to neighborhoods from Astoria (named after the wealthy fur trader, John Jacob Astor) to Woodside. Within these chapters, she covers the basics: where the neighborhood is located, how to get there, its history, things to see and do, where to shop, points of cultural interest, restaurants, and nightlife. Sprinkled throughout the chapters are lively anecdotes and essays, some written in the first person by Queens residents. At the back of the book are sections about JFK and LaGuardia Airports, tours you can take, and recommended Web sites. The detailed and well-organized subject and alphabetical indexes make the book easy to navigate.

Even if you plan never to set foot in Queens, this guidebook is fun to read solely for its entertainment value. The author has a brisk and spunky writing style that makes "Queens" a browser's delight. Turn to any page, and you will find a fascinating tidbit of information presented with wit and verve. Did you know that jazz great Louis Armstrong lived in Queens for for twenty-eight years and that his house is a National Historic Landmark open to the public? I love New York (especially Brooklyn), but Ellen Freudenheim tempts me to board one of the many subway lines leading to the "hidden gems" of Queens.

(Who knew?)
『I'm told Queens is the new Brooklyn, and as a long-time Brooklyn resident I thought, Fuggedaboudit! But that was until I read Freudenheim's book. Wow. And I thought Queens was famous for Shea Stadium, the old Worlds Fair and two airports. I stand corrected, and after reading just one part of the book I'm hungry. Having already wet my whistle at the beer garden I think I'll head over to Flushing for some authentic Asian cuisine. I suggest you read this book and head to Queens too, before all the trustafarians and folks priced out of Brooklyn and Manhattan over-run the place.』
