(One thing to keep in mind.)
『I don't own this book-- let me say that up front. But with any reproduction from the 19th century, there's one thing of which you must beware: the Victorians LOVED to put their "stamp" on things. If you look at the bodies of the women, for example, you can see they hold to a Victorian standard of beauty, not one contemporary to the costumes rendered. The differences in line and fit for the articles of clothing themselves are also subtly different, based on, again, a very different aesthetic. While this may not matter to anyone looking for general outlines and period landmarks, it's something to keep in mind for more serious research. In other words, if you're looking to reproduce a costume somewhat faithfully, this shouldn't be your primary resource.』

(Great Pictorial Guide)
『Dover's edition is reproduced from colorplates
from "Modes et Costumes Historiques" (Paris, 1864).
It is a very good guide to fashions of the nobility
and general costume of the peasant/working class,
including women and men, a doctor, page,
shepherdess, and chambermaid, etc.

There is a List of Plates at the front, but no Introduction, Index in the back, or glossary of terms. Plate captions include the Plate number, General Title, Date.
(ie: "Plate 3. Women from the outskirts of Paris (reign of Charles VIII), 1443.")

This edition would go well with Dover's
_An Illustrated Dictionary of Historic Costume_ or
_A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion Historic and Modern_.

The book is well worth it for fashion enthusiasts! As an art historian and illustrator, I find Dover's color plates extremely useful for accurate patterns and fabric colors.』

500 years of French fashion are reproduced directly from a rare and valuable 19th-century publication. Artfully rendered illustrations progress chronologically from the voluminous robes of 15th-century royalty to the Empire styles of the Napoleonic era. Members of the nobility are well represented, as are dapper pages, knights, chambermaids, milkmaids, and shepherdesses. 76 full-color plates.

(Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color, and Composition in Photography)
『This is a terrific book. It covers the basics in depth and in an easy to understand manner. I teach a beginning photography class for the city and will be utilizing this book.』

(Incredible Read!)
『I would recommend this book to anyone starting off in photography.

Invaluable information, well presented, and easily referenced.』

(Changed my shooting)
『Bryan Peterson's book is excellent for beginners like myself. He walks you through basic prinicples of design and composition with many excellent examples. Most importantly he walks you through his thought process. Each picture has information about how he shot it and often why he shot it that way. The book also includes several useful excercises to help you develop your eye. Although it could be argued that the book doesn't cover all topics and is not as thorough as other books, it accompishes its purpose which is to get beginning photographers to see the world around them differently. This book rapidly improved my shots because the examples and principles are so clear. Now I am ready to move on to more complex and complete books. I highly recommend this book to get started.』

(Well worth the Read)
『A very good book of instruction and fabulous examples are given of creative picture taking.』
『Almost everyone can "see" in the conventional sense, but developing photographic vision takes practice. This work helps photographers visualize their work, and the world, in a whole new light. This revised and rewritten guide takes a radical approach to creativity. It explains how it is not some gift only for a few, but actually a skill that can be learned and applied. Using inventive photographs from his own portfolio, the author deconstructs creativity for photographers. He details the basic techniques that went into not only taking a particular photo, but also provides insights on how to improve upon it, so helping readers avoid the visual pitfalls that can lead to dull photographs. This edition features informaton on digital photography and digital imaging software, as well as a section on colour as a design element.』

(This book transcends its genre and you want to read it.)
『In this book, an expert on mountain goats tells you all about mountain goats. With some old black-and-white pictures.

Doesn't sound very exciting, does it? Well, Douglas Chadwick has blown the genre apart. The book includes his personal story of becoming and being a mountain goat biologist, and the joys of wandering around Montana's high country in winter. He tells us about mountain goats and how they live in their challenging habitat. He teaches us about how to identify male and female goats of various ages, mostly in terms of how he figured it out himself. We get to observe goat sex but, again, we learn it through his eyes. (Chadwick also tells us why it matters - - it's really easy for hunters to disrupt goat reproduction.)

Chadwick also sets the stage more fully, discussing the other animals that live in goat country and how their habitats and lifestyles differ from goats. He discusses goat evolution and how the steep cliffs of goat country shape their body shape, behavior, and evolution. He criticizes state game management agencies for assuming (wrongly) that mountain goats behave like other large, hoofed animals and can therefore be hunted at the same rates, in a similarly regulated system.

Last, but certainly not least, he makes an impassioned case for preserving the species and the high country that he loves.

It's highly readable, and if you're looking at this review, you should read it. Then give it to a friend.』

(Great Book)
『This book has everything you would want to know about Oreamnos americanus including how many times goats chew their cud depending on age. We view mountain goats a lot here and this book will greatly help improve this experience. I thought this book was well written and mixed informational data and story telling very well to keep things from getting to dry.』

(Best of the Best)
『This is one of the best books I have ever read. Douglas Chadwick is a brillaint and sensitive observer of all natural things and has a keen insight into human nature as well. Nothing you can read will ever teach you as much about Mountain Goats as this wonderful book. I have hunted Moutain Goats and will continue to do so. Regardless of Chadwick's feelings about hunting, I admire him greatly and highly recommend this book.』

(The Authoritative Foundation for Mountain Goat Studies)
『Chadwick presents here the most thorough and enjoyable encyclopedia of everything Oreamanos Americanus (Mountain Goat). It takes me back to my own days roaming the high country of the Bob Marshall on long weekends, seeing early spring heards back of Gibson Reserviour playing and every munching on sedge in the snow.

A thoroughly enjoyable read for any high country affecianodo.

(Informative, but)
『I found the book to be very informative about the ways that goats go about their daily lives and the hierarchied structure that prevails. The problem I have with this book is the author's admission that he is against the hunting of mountain goats. This is fine to have as an opinion, but when the author admits in writing that he has performed an illegal act, harrassing animals to prevent legal hunting as well as threatening to destroy a legal road to disallow legal vehicle access, my opinion of the book plummeted.
Also the data in the book was from the 1980's and there have been many studies done since then. More recent information would have been helpful.』

"In North America there is one large animal that belongs almost entirely to the realm of towering rock and unmelting snow. Pressing hard against the upper limit of life's possibilities, it exists higher and steeper throughout the year than any other big beast on the continent. It is possibly the best and most complete mountaineer that ever existed on any continent. Oreamnos americanus is its scientific name. Its common name is mountain goat."

Resourceful, belligerent, and unbelievably sure-footed, the mountain goat is a white-coated survivor from the Ice Age. Oreamnos americanus shares its dizzying alpine world with elk, eagles, bighorn sheep, and grizzlies. This first full-length book on the mountain goat offers a superbly written portrait of its life, habits, and environment. Douglas H. Chadwick tracked mountain goat herds for seven years, and his observations are richly textured and replete with fascinating and dramatic details. We learn of the mountain goats' lives from birth to adulthood, their feeding habits, unique social behavior and courtship rituals, and their long history. Chadwick also makes clear the troubling and escalating impact of the modern world on the mountain goat's wilderness home. This Bison Books edition features a new introduction by the author.

(A good book, but there is room to improve)
『This book was written based on the color theory. Basically, the theory says that each of us has either yellow or pink skin undertone, and thus only fits one of four "color palettes" namely Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Everyone can wear every color but it's the shade and intensity that makes the difference. This book is for colored skin people: Black, Asian, Caucasian, Latin America. Those who want to learn more about the same topic with a focus on white skin people may read "Color Me Beautiful."

In my opinion, the color theory has a good rationale behind it: everybody has her own colors that flatters her skin tone (and body shape too.) For example, my mother hates black and loves brown, rich orange clothes. She always says she feels older in black, but black actually flatters my skin. In terms of the color theory my mom can be an Autumn and I, a Winter. However, I think dividing all people into such 4 categories is an oversimplification. While finding the color type may be easy for some people (white, pinky skin), it doesn't work for me. I'm an Asian with fairly light skin and the skin undertone is between pink and yellow, or peach color. So I don't think I belong to a particular group. However, the book is successful in that it makes me pay attention to the colors and shades that suit me. Gradually, I hope I'll create my own "color palette". Besides, the book has very thorough color pages which I may use as a checklist when I shop for clothes and build my unique colors.』

(It's Color Me Beautiful For Women Of Color)
『I met Ms. Mathis at a book signing more than 10 years ago, and found her to be a lovely, caring person. She was a disciple of Carole Jackson who expanded the original CMB concept to include various ethnicities. I found the book to be heavy on advice for African-American skintypes rather than Hispanic or Asian women; however, it is was a very useful book for me, because I was a trained CMB consultant at that time, and many of my clients were non-white. If you combine this book with Donna Fujii's "Color With Style", you will have the most complete advice for women of color.』

(The worst book for ethnics I have read.)
『One would think that a CMB book about women of color would atleast focus on all women of color. This advice speaks of african american women, Asian women (as in Chinese, Korean, not Pakistani or Indian) and Hispanic women, and if you are from the middle east, the mediteranean, or SriLanka you pretty much have one picture of an east Indian woman, and some white women to look at and assume you must be an autumn. She offers much conflicting advice - that you could look golden but be olive, and there is no way you can color type your skin using this book unless you are very blue black or very golden. The author herself looks warm toned in her picture but says she is winter, and a family picture of a very good looking African American family is even more confusing than ever, because the mother and daughters are all of the same skin tone and undertones, hair and eye color, but are dubbed autumn and springs respectively. Her book is full of written examples of her clients, but without pictures don't make much sense except in selling her skills and her suggestions are way over the top (Top Management should have fur coats as part of their work wardrobe any body?). Honestly, I bought this book from a reseller for 2 bucks and that was a waste for the shoddy advice this book provides. You are much better off reading the core CMB books which includes advice for women of color, but does not claim a focus it does not deliver on. Unless you really liked 80's fashion and wouldn't mind reading antiquated, conflicting advice, I would advice against buying this book.』

(Must-buy for Image Consultants - current and future!)
『This book takes the theory of Seasonal Color to a new level. As a woman of color and a Certified Image Consultant trained in Seasonal Color draping, I very much appreciated the detail and thought given to seasonal color as applied to women of color.

Too often, women of color were tagged with one particular season, with no allowance for the rainbow of skin tones and coloring combinations that we are born with. This book explains not only the different possibilities for coloring, but teaches through gorgeous photography and color charts that women of color can fit into any of the traditional seasons.

Wonderful information is also contained within this book on dressing figure challenges, accessories, and drawing the eye to where you want it. For anyone in the Image Consulting industry who works with women, this book is a great reference. Our world is becoming more multi-cultural every day, and this book will help Consultants work effectively within that world.』

(Should Be More About Color!)
『I found this book a great add-on to Carole Jackson's Color Me Beautiful. The photographs are beautiful and the techniques are presented logically. However, I didn't like that she seems to advertise certain clothing designers like Donna Karran/DKNY and Liz Claiborne. Also, she seems to push the idea that in order to be beautiful you need to spend a lot of money on things like manicures&pedicures every 7 days seeing a skin care specialist often. HELLO! Not everyone has a budget for these sort of things! I also didn't like the fact that she seems to think that your season dictates your personality and what fragrance you choose.』
『The world's women are auniverse of colors with a gorgeous spectrum of eye, hair and skin tones. Now acclaimed personal image consultant Darlene Mathis offers her easy-to-follow system for identifying the palette of colors that will enhance natural beauty and develop "fashion fitness" so women of all colors will look great and feel terrific no matter what their ethnic roots: African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American and more.
