(Flying Colors)
『Mr Leffens is an abstract artist. An artist with the power to see beyond the surface, to the essential beauty around him. It was this vision that allowed him to see through the severe physical disabilities of a group of students and witness their souls. Powerful souls, overlooked by the world but exploding with insight.

Mr Leffens discovers a way for them to communicate, not in words, but in a more expressive reflection of their spirit. Given the tools to paint, these artists overcome the forces that enslave us all, limited expectations, power struggles and the jealousy of those who have stopped striving.

These "handicapped" artists vault over their able bodied colleagues to reach heights most can only dream of. It's an inspiration and indeed, a work of art.

Jeff Carlson - Sun Prairie, Wisconsin』

(Watching Art Release a Prisoner)
『The author, Tim Lefens, is an abstract artist who is troubled by a growing physical impairment. He writes how he accepts an invitation to show slides of his work to severely disabled people in a hospital/school in New Jersey. The power of the individuals' spirit, communicated mostly through their eyes, bowls him over, and he can't stop thinking about their excitement and interest. The well-meaning but insensitive employees of the school treat the patients like children of zero intelligence and do everything for them, to the point of choosing saccharine TV shows about purple dinosaurs for these thinking adults. Lefens tells how he feels propelled to liberate the residents from the prison of their bodies and others' misguided babying through the medium of art. He begins by working with patients who can operate wheelchairs and sets up a way to paint by driving over the painting with wheels. From there the thrilled artists move on to ever more expressive techniques. The story of how Lefens fights a stultified and hostile bureaucracy, finds legitimate art galleries for the artists to show their work and liberates them in unexpected ways is riveting. It should help readers put their own prisons in perspective and think about ways to accomplish the impossible in their lives, too.』

(Flying Colors)
『This is one fabulous book. I loved it, absolutely could not put it down and am enjoying reading it again. I find it exceptionally interesting and inspiring and wildly funny. It gave me so many insights about the tremendous power of art and what modern painting, and painting in general, really is about. It is a wonderful, finely written love story and I could not recommend more highly.』

(Invigorate Yourself)
『Post 9/11, it seems that most people are looking to fantasy adventures or some other kind of escapist fiction to deal with their angst. More likely people aren't reading at all and simply plop themselves in front of CNN or MSNBC or Jennings or Brokaw, zombie-like, cabernet in hand, nightly, hoping that something good happens.

Well, something good has happened. It's Flying Colors by Tim Lefens. If you're looking to wrench yourself from years of predictable garbage---whether from t.v. or from a pretentious novel---read this book.

Mr. Lefens paints a vivid portrait of all of his characters,so much so that many of the most challenged individuals in this book aren't in wheelchairs. Angel, for example, the tough, unlikely assistant from Trenton is masterfully described. At one time he's described by Lefens as the king of diplomacy and b.s.; the next moment he's the most brutally honest person in the book. Natalie, Chet, James and the rest of the students teach those of us unafflicted by CP that we are, often, afflicted with worse problems. The way Lefens describes, throughout the book and through different circumstances, how pitiful the "normal" people of the world are for not "getting it," is hilarious.
Pack all of the characters together, certainly not just the students, and I think Lefens has begun to touch on the essence of being, if I dare say so. Invigorate yourself and read something worthwhile! Laugh, cry, fight crying until you laugh, get angry, and then LAUGH again. Oh, and may Ring of Keys repent!』

(A Genius in Our Midst)
『Tim Lefens is a modern-day Leonardo da Vinci: painter, poet, teacher, inventor. Genius of this brilliance is rare in our world and will necessarily receive some opposition: opposition from those unable to concede the space that such talent requires, and opposition from those who need to feel a sense of superiority but suddenly are confronted with people of decidedly inferior bodies but through the genius of Lefens are now demonstrating a creative power definitely superior to that which most of us possess.
"Flying Colors" is a once-in-a-lifetime literary gem. I am not suggesting but demanding that all of my friends read it.』

『More than half of the world’s petroleum is found in carbonate rocks — for example, in the Middle East, the former USSR and in North America. These rocks show a bewildering diversity of grains and textures, due in part to the wealth of different fossil organisms that have contributed to carbonate sedimentation, and in partto a wide variety of diagenetic processes that can radically modify textures and obscure the depositional fabric. Careful petrographic study with a polarising microscope is a key element of any study of carbonate sediments — as a companion to field or core logging and as a necessary precursor togeochemical analysis. This atlas, which illustrates in full color a range of features not attempted in any general textbook, is designed as a laboratory manual to keep beside the microscope, and as an aid to identifying grain types and textures in carbonates. It will appeal alike to under-graduate and graduate students and to professionals in teaching institutions, research laboratories and industry. (So what's new?)
『I found it boring and depressing. Politics as usual. This is nothing new ya know.

The people who have governed this country (heck!, the world) from the getgo have all been like this. It was just kept under wraps better. Too many leakers, climbers and journalists these days.

(A profile in courage)
『You gotta love a political pundit like Joe Klein. He didn't even have the decency to attach his name to his book. Wow, that's courage. That's a backbone.

Let's see, Klein goes around slamming the Clinton presidency, anonymously. Thanks, Joe. America needs more brave souls like you.

Go back to writing your drivel in Time Magazine. Frankly I am surprised you have the courage to attach your name to your columns.

(Good.)
『I never read the book. My sister needed it for school. She said the books was interesting.』

(Better character study than politics or novel)
『The concept of this book intrigued me: analysis of the first really postmodern president America had, a man who was known for scanning the polls before he had an opinion on any issue, and a candidate whose success was made possible by computer analysis of voter opinion. However, the work itself is quite tedious. There is not enough analysis of characters, and too many scenes explaining the political process. There is too much emphasis on the development of a plot that's tangential to the study of tehse characters, and there is not enough room given to them so that, in breathing, they might exhale what we can then diagnose. I didn't understand why so much emphasis was placed on the narrator, either, since his role was not central. While I read this book without political bias, I was not blown away by its quality as a read or a political novel, but the insight into a certain president's character, and how that made him a success, was intriguing. Not sure if I'd recommend it to anyone except historians at this point.』

(Cooking Pig Ain't Always 'Bout Barbecues)
『After starting the 1990s by publishing "Bonfire Of The Vanities," Tom Wolfe wrote an essay decrying the state of fiction, how too many authors wrote convoluted, esoteric novels designed to win elitist approval and be ignored by the masses: Why oh why can't some journalist swoop in and write a novel that's really about life and people we know, like the great Frenchman Zola had?

Joe Klein seemed to notice this, if "Primary Colors," the book he had published under the moniker "Anonymous," is any indication. This was a book taken so directly from life that it became a parlor game figuring out who was who. Sure, Jack Stanton was really our then-president, and his wife Susan was Hillary Clinton, but who was that crazy Libby woman supposed to be? Or the shadowy narrator, Henry Burton?

The buzz gave "Primary Colors" most of its popularity, but one wonders just how interested people are in the book now that Bill Clinton is retired. Probably not much, which is a shame, because "Primary Colors" deserves better than being a '90s time capsule.

If you haven't read "Primary Colors," one thing you need to know about it is it's not a note-by-note recitation of the Clinton road to power. It takes some similar turns, and some prescient ones (Monica was not news when this came out in 1996), and in general Jack and Susan Stanton are recognizably Clintonesque, but there are some liberties taken that make the real First Couple seem like the saintly Carters by comparison. The plot takes some jaw-dropping turns, in a sort of shameless "Desperate Housewives"-way that makes for fun reading.

The other salient thing about the book is that it is a clever satire not of one specific administration but the whole way politics is done in our time, the way passion and practicality come together and threaten to do each other harm. One campaign leader cautions our narrator about getting TB, True Believerism, and "Primary Colors" sells its weary cynicism with sharp humor and pungent observation.

It has the feeling of reality, too. Klein has followed a lot of political campaigns, and invests his narrative with a sense of how things really play out when the candidates aren't in front of the cameras. One staff worker is unhorsed not by anything she says but what she doesn't say, a slight but noticeable pause when talking about another candidate's giving blood that reveals her knowledge about - and discomfort in - the candidate she's working for.

The novel isn't perfect. The main romance isn't really well-defined, there's too much Libby and not enough Richard Jemmons, the crazy cracker Carville stand-in. Klein throws a lot of balls in the air, and doesn't catch all of them, but I think the variety of ideas and atmospheres you get in the space of 500 pages has a lot to do with its readability, and the satisfying sense you have when you are done.

"Primary Colors" reminds me a lot of Tom Wolfe, vibrant, flashy, but well-thought out all the time. Waggish, too; Klein even uses "mau-mau" as a verb. Most important, it's entertainment at its highest level, and something worth remembering long after the rest of the circus has passed us by.

『A brilliant and penetrating look behind the scenes of modern American politics, Primary Colors is a funny, wise, and dramatic story with characters and events that resemble some familiar, real-life figures. When a former congressional aide becomes part of the staff of the governor of a small Southern state, he watches in horror, admiration, and amazement, as the governor mixes calculation and sincerity in his not-so-above-board campaign for the presidency.

From the Hardcover edition.

『The famous -- or infamous -- roman a clef about the 1992 Clinton presidential campaign. You've read the hype; now read the book.

Primary Colorshas its rich rewards as a savvy insider's look at life on the stump. But it travels far beyond mere gossip and expose and discovers a convincing world of its own, peopled by smart cookies, nutcases, and wheeler-dealers, whose public and private lives illuminate each other -- sometimes by casting dark shadows. This story spans the novelistic spectrum from bedroom farce to high moral drama, and it paints a picture of the political state of the nation so vivid and authentic that one finds in it the deepest kind of truth -- the kind of truth that only fiction can tell.』

(Diamond Sins)
『The world of fine gemstones is brought to life and death in Elizabeth Lowell's THE COLOR OF DEATH. Her research and knowledge of fine gems keep the reader plowing through some rather rigid suspense. I became a fan with AMBER BEACH and have read them all, this one lacked the special sparkle I've come to associate with Ms. Lowell.
Sam Groves is relentless, but Kate Chandler seem along for the ride even those she cut the Seven Sins (blue white diamonds) and her brother is missing. The action is well paced with sharp dialogue until the last line.
Nash Black, author of TRAVELERS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.』

(An allright book)
『This book isn't as good as other Lowell novels. It does have it's good parts though.』

(Fun for the beach but you need to concentrate.)
『Elizabeth Lowell knows her precious stones. We're exposed to a plethora of coloured stones here, precious and not, rough (uncut) and cut, genuine and manufactured. So many your head will whirl, and you'll have to take a trip to the jeweller's to slake a bit of the gem lust that ensues! In Colour Of Death it's seven stunning sapphires - huge, perfectly cut, rare genuine sapphires worth millions - that inspire lust and murder. Kate Chandler has cut the seven sapphires, which she nicknames the Seven Sins. Her brother is courier for the finished product, but he and the sapphires go missing en route to the delivery. A murky swirl of rumours about theft emerge that blacken his name, but Kate is convinced he's been murdered and the jewels stolen. So much so she decides to track the Sins down, despite death threats and the FBI blowing her off. When she finds just one `Sin' at a gem show she's also noticed by FBI agent Sam Groves. He operates on gut instinct, sometimes a little bit outside the law. Death snaps at their heels as they race to uncover the mystery behind Kate's brother's disappearance. This is a complex and brilliant thriller. Like the gems themselves, it will dazzle you.』

(Trite Book leaves me wishing it were over)
『The plot of this book COULD have been good. However, the cutesy sexual foreplay was WAY overdone. It seemed pretty unbelievable that the FBI agent Sam Groves could be so thoroughly disliked by his bosses and still be working. It's also pretty unbelievable that all the information that Sam puts together for his seemingly stupid bosses gets totally ignored.

Sam and Kate's rolls in the hay detract from the story line. It seems as if the author can't decide whether she wants to be a mystery writer or a tawdry romance writer.

I doubt whether I'll ever read another one of her books.』

(Good story, strong characters)
『I'd classify this book as a suspense novel rather than a thriller. I'd agree that the plot and outcome were predictable, but along the way it was a still a good story. I will definitely read more of Elizabeth Howell's suspense books.

Kate Chandler is a gem cutter who cut seven extraordinarily beautiful and valuable sapphires from a rare piece of rough sapphire. Her stepfather runs a gem courier company and Kate's brother, Lee Mandel is the courier taking the gems from Kate to the owner in Florida. Only her brother never arrives. His rental car is returned, but no brother and no gems. The general consensus is that Lee has done a runner with a buxom blonde, but that doesn't ring true to those that know him best.

Sam Groves is an FBI working on other wrongdoings in the gem industry. There appears to be a conspiracy with some rather nasty murders along the way. Kate tries to shake Sam off, but he discovers who she is and they both become involved in the mayhem.

Of course there is electricity sparking between Sam and Kate, and to my way of thinking a hard-bitten FBI agent of 16 years, probably wouldn't have trusted Kate quite that quickly.

There are a plenty of characters, including quite a few in the FBI, but I didn't have any trouble following who was who. It made the book more realistic by involving those characters, even though some were only mentioned once or twice, or provided red herrings. I also thought that the amount of confidential information openly given to Sizemore, an ex-FBI agent now running a security/courier service, by Kennedy, a current FBI agent, was unrealistic. I know they were both involved in security for the same gem show, but forwarding Sizemore emails and allowing him to meetings where other cases/murders were discussed didn't ring true to me.

All in all, a good read. Not the best book on the shelf, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'd also agree that the subliminal sexual message when Kate kept taking out her hair clip and running her fingers through her hair was overdone.

If you are a fan of Elizabeth Lowell's steamy historical novels, you may not enjoy this book because, like Sandra Brown, her suspense books are very different.』

Kate Chandler has accepted a commission that will solidify her reputation as a world-class gem cutter. But during what should have been a simple transfer, seven rare, priceless sapphires vanish without a trace, along with their courier, her brother Lee, who now, quite possibly, is dead. And suddenly Kate is on the run, pursued by federal agents who believe she's the criminal mastermind of a cunning bait-and-switch.

Only Kate suspects the terrifying truth: that she's stumbled into a conspiracy of deceit, betrayal, and cold-blooded murder that goes far beyond a simple jewel heist. Getting Sam Groves, the FBI special agent who's her constant shadow, to trust her is a step in the right direction -- but it may be too little and too late in a bloody game where terror dictates her every move. Because a ruthless assassin has already received the order that Kate Chandler must die ...
