Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (seems dull for a color theory book) 『the colors seem dull and dark. why use a black background for the samples and examples? those pictures look a little out of focus, shadowy, and dark. i really like everything else about this book, but expected much better photography. i want a visual feast when i sit down to explore color. this was uninspiring.』
(The only book on color you'll ever need!) 『Really, this book covers all you'll need to experiment with color. I never knew that so much was involved when making color choices. It's not hard to understand, but it took me a bit to understand the chapter on value. Once I read it through twice, though, it all started to make sense.
It also contains a color wheel with punch out overlays to help you choose colors. I did find them hard to punch out, as another reviewer stated, and ended up using scissors to cut the perforations.
This book is just packed with information. If you are interested in exploring color, you'll find this book very helpful.』
(Color and medium combinations) 『Deb Menz's Color Works is about color combination. There are numerous illustrations of theory and practice. The pages of samples showing several mediums makes the book for me. The same color on yarn, fabric, seed beads, or paper has a different resonance. The text illustrates how color/medium combinations "can be dramatic or theatrical." The examples push the reader to consider alternative color choices. Goethe's color theory of relative proportions is convincingly illustrated. Deb Menz offers practical methods to add more colors (hexad harmony) while avoiding a rainbow look. There's plenty to retrain the eye and mind.』
(Wonderful reference you'll use again and again) 『If you are a craftsperson, this is a terrific reference tool! The examples of spinning, beading, weaving, quilting, and embroidery really show you how color works in each realm. Best of all are the tear out color wheel and color harmony overlays that get you thinking about your palette.』
(Inroduction to color in fiber arts) 『Colorworks is a great introduction to color theory for people who work in fiber arts, packed with lots of examples of color schemes worked out in knitting, weaving, beads, quilting, paper, machine and surface embroidery. While it is not nearly as in-depth as the now out-of-print Color and Fiber, it is also more accessible. It is also not as specific as Mary Fry's Color for Needlework, but it provides a good, solid ground for a stitcher's exploration of color.
Almost half the book is made up of color tools, including palettes of each of twelve hue, ranging from fully saturated hues to extremely muted tones and shades. A Color Wheel and Value Scale are also provide. A series of templates has holes cut out to be used in conjunction with the color wheel to find color combinations.
The seven chapters of the book cover all the major topics in color studies. There are chapters on color relationships, value, contrasts, and harmonies. Each sub-topic within the chapters is given s page of text. Next to it are nine samples in various media showing the principle discussed. These examples use the same design from page to page, varying only in the color used. As much as anything, this gives graphic demonstration of the topics and will fuel stitchers' imaginations.
The last two chapters apply color to specific media. The sixth chapter discusses the characteristics of media in relation to color. Most folks know that shiny surfaces look lighter than matte surfaces, but how does this apply to knitting yarn or beads. Knowing something of the characteristics of yarns before you shop will help you in making choices. The final chapter, shows how a color scheme is developed in each of the nine crafts used in the book. Paper scraps show the basic colors involved while the text outlines the color harmony used as well as the specific colors. A value scale on paper is included and samples of the media used are also included in the illustration.
This book provides just enough information on color to get a craftsperson started with this exciting topic. Unlike many books on color, this book doesn't talk about mixing colors, since these materials are all discreet. But it should be considered a starting point for color exploration, not a complete book.』 『
Crafters can explore colors with confidence in a variety of mediums with the advice in this book. The principles of color theory are clearly and simply explained and applied to knitting, spinning, weaving, surface design (including stenciling and rubber stamping), hand and machine embroidery, beadwork, and paper collage. Basic color concepts are presented in sections on color description, values, contrasting and complementary colors, warm and cool colors, undertones, and using color relationships. A pull-out color wheel and handy color chips in perforated format that are easy to remove and use for planning, matching, and shopping for supplies are included.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Barely Three Stars) 『I have to agree with the previous reviewers comments about the Van Gogh exhibit he was unfortunately unable to attend. I just came from the MOMA today, and it was indeed remarkable to have so many of the artist's works in a single show.
That said, I would also concur that the central theme of the show is a bit contrived. It seems to be organized around a few comments Van Gogh made to his brother Theo (the exhibit includes multiple letters the artist wrote to his closest sibling) about effectively capturing the beauty of the night sky through artistic method. Beyond the two Starry Night works, the remaining pieces displayed are less on-point with regard to the general theme. However, so much Van Gogh in one place is truly rewarding. I can't complain about the exhibit.
I am admittedly not trained in art in any way, so I'm left with what I've learned through some undergraduate classes and auto-didactic energies. Having said that, the value of the book for those who have not attended the exhibit may be limited with a couple of exceptions: The MOMA exhibit very effectively displays Van Gogh's progression through the late 1880s from work that lacks distinctive quality to pieces like the Starry Night works that scream his name. Also, the book breaks down Van Gogh's work by having numerous curators, educators, and artists evaluate his life and productivity. The commentary is doubtless not groundbreaking, but I found it interesting for someone who is not steeped in artistic technique or history.』
(Just for the sake of the reproductions) 『I cannot help thinking, when opening this catalogue for the latest Van Gogh show at the Moma, that the only reason for the museum to mount such a show is to be able to make some more money at its bookshop and at its ticket counter.
Granted, the reproductions of Van Gogh's night paintings (e.g. The famous Starry Night, Gauguin's Chair, the Café at Arles, the Starry Night on the Rhone, etc) are gorgeous, but why choose such an artificial and arbitrary theme? Many a painter painted night scenes or landscapes, before and after Van Gogh, and the paintings depicted here are masterpieces not because of the fact that they are night scenes, butbecause of Van Gogh's genius. There is no real connection between them: what is there in common between the early "Potato Eaters" and the late "Starry Night"? The fact that they both depict night scenes does not justify a whole book on the theme. Next time, will it be "Van Gogh and the colors of day"?
The text, somewhat pompous and vacuous, does not really alter this initial impression. I would have loved to see the exhibition for the sake of the paintings (so many major paintings are seldom seen together, especially the two starry nights), but the book itself does not add anything of substance to the already extensive literature on Van Gogh. I'd rather read Van Gogh's much more illuminating own letters to his brother Theo...
』 『Throughout his career, Vincent van Gogh attempted the paradoxical task of representing night through color and tonality. His procedure followed the trend set by the Impressionists of "translating" visual light effects with various color combinations, yet this goal was grafted onto his desire to interweave the visual and the metaphorical in order to produce fresh and original works of art. These different artistic concerns found themselves powerfully bound together in Van Gogh's nocturnal and twilight paintings and drawings. This illuminating volume, published to accompany the first exhibition to focus on this aspect of Van Gogh's career, presents new insight on Van Gogh's depictions of night landscapes, interior scenes and the effects of both artificial and natural light on their surroundings. Representing all periods of the artist's career, this volume features more than 100 images of superlative quality, including large reproductions of works by Van Gogh, details of iconic paintings and images of works by other artists that were important to the development of Van Gogh's oeuvre. Essays by the exhibition organizers provide historical and personal contexts for better understanding the artist's motives and offer in-depth studies of the technical and stylistic aspects of Van Gogh's work. Vincent van Goghwas born in 1853 in The Netherlands. His career as an artist lasted only 10 years, but he produced almost 2,000 paintings and works on paper during this brief period, many of them described or sketched in his extensive correspondence with his brother Theo. Van Gogh is most celebrated for his bold use of color and expressive painting technique. He spent his last years in the south of France, where he painted many of his most famous works. He died in Auvers-sur-Oise, just north of Paris, on July 29, 1890.』

IPhone 3G used's review (Color Mixing) 『This book is an excellent book. I have just started art lessons and need a little help in knowing how to mix colors. Helen Van Wyk books have all been excellent book. Easy to understand with great information and instructions.』
(Color Mixing the V.W.W.) 『This is a great book specially for beginner. Excellent reference book. I'll certainly read it several times.』
(Worse than useless) 『All the theory in this book is dead wrong. There is little by way of practical advice. The book is mainly a collection of amateurish paintings by Ms. Van Wyk that are supposed to illustrate how to use various tubed colors. You should aspire to paint much better than Van Wyk ever did.
To date, there appears to be no good book on mixing color. Instead, see www.handprint.com. It's about watercolor, but the color theory and mixing sections apply equally to oil paint. Also give a look to www.wetcanvas.com』
(A must have for artists in all mediums!!) 『I just received this book for Christmas 2002 and I have read it and re-read it! It has a wealth of information and is even a good reminder for those who might not have painted in a while. It helps you attain effects that you want and gives some step-by-step descriptions to help you understand what the author is talking about. I find that the information on casting shadows and the information on focal points most helpful. Helen Van Wyk also helps you to dimensionalize your art. Once you have read this book you will not look at colors in the same way. "The 4 Questions" will have you looking at art completely different. Don't paint without it!』
(great novice manual!) 『This is a great manual for beginning and intermediate painters. It is arranged in a rather unusual way: by paint color. Within each chapter there are step-by-step paintings showing the color's usage. While I found the the organization odd at first, I quickly grew to appreciate it. There are colors I never would have thought to put in my palate, but seeing them in action was very valuable. Likewise, having a blended value scale for each paint was wonderful!
What I found most valuable as an beginner/ interm. painter was being able to see a variety of paintings in stages. And not just "one, two, three, boom its done" like many books, but really layer by layer. She touches on a couple of different styles, discussing glazing as well as her painterly approach.
This book also has valuable reference pages discussing (and displaying) color scales, color temperatures, earth tones, blending tricks, etc. It touches on portraits, backgrounds, and a variety of other related topics. I have read a number of other basic painting books, and this is my favorite. I have also seen (and own) other of Helen van Wyk's books, and while they are nice, this is by far the most valuable (and it includes some paintings and sections repeated in other books, i.e. portrait painting and color mixing bits).』
『In this practical guide to color from one of America's best known artists, color mixing is explained clearly. Oil and acrylic painters will learn how to put color theory into action. This book is a tremendous help to the artist struggling with color composition. 230 color, 15 black-and white illustrations.』

It runs through such useful categories as starting points--choosing maybe your favorite color or a favorite color from a rug. And then, and this is what really helps, the book goes through all the colors, such as yellow, or red, and shows different hues, different tones, and what other colors go well together with them. Every set of colors shows you a photo of a room using those colors.
There is also a section at the back that includes many neutrals, and shows you how to blend them. If you are terrified of painting everything in your living room blood red, then this part of the book, with its soothing blend of neutral shades, will really help.』
(Color for beginners) 『I'm taking a color class in an interior design program. I have a textbook and various color-related books that I purchased by myself on Amazon. This is one of my favorite of all.
It does introduce some very basic yet important concepts about color in such an understandable language first. Then, it gets into the color application part, explaining how to combine colors to create a certain kind of ambience or impact, in a very easy-to-understand way again.
It is really well written, although it's not written by any certified designers. For beginners who like colors and would like to understand colors, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it.』
(Great basic paint color guide) 『Clear, concise guide to choosing and co-ordinating colors in the home. Lots of helpful pointers, such as how to unify rooms in the home with the baseboard color. Often I flip through interior design books looking at the photos, but this one was interesting to read as well as look at.』
(1st Painting Book...) 『I have purchased my first house and will soon be tackling the job of painting it. I bought this book to get ideas on how to paint without using neutral colors in every room. This book has opened my eyes to the various color schemes and how to use them. It has a painting wheel inside. It tells you how to use colors and even has a question/answer page in the very back. It gives you a lot of pictures with furnishings and talks about how to tie the color on the walls with the furnishings and vice versa. I really liked how the author explained what the colors draw out, for example, "Yellow. Happiness and good cheer circle the room when you invite yellow inside. Bright citrus and pistachio yellows wake you up while the softer tones of vanilla, cream, and honey warm you like sunshine. Yellow-greens add brightness, golds glow with richness. Whatever your pick--buttercup, mustard, bamboo, or lemon sherbert-- yellow is sure to improve your outlook on life." I had some ideas of how I wanted to paint my house and this book helped me to figure out if I was headed in a good direction. By allowing me to pick a trait I wanted to draw out, for example my living room I would like to draw on conversation, while the bedroom relaxation; this book helped guide me into the correct colors to draw on those attributes. The author speaks in a basic level so the average person can comprehend what they are saying at a basic level. I would recommend this book for beginners, but would also recommend purchasing another book to go with it that may give more ideas.』 『Bring your home together withNew Color Schemes Made Easyfrom Meredith Books. This book will show you how to decorate your home with a flow of color that connects every room. With color palettes that will help mix and match your favorite colors, you can now easily create beautiful color combinations room after room that fir your style - both indoors and out.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (The longer the better) 『This book will be useful for years. My 5 month old loves this book, as did the twin two year olds I used to baby sit. My son kicks and wiggles when I pull this book out, and he puts his hands all over the images. I point to each apple and say apple as I find all of the apples in the image. I think the repetition and the similarity are coming together for him better than in any other book of colors or counting I have found because of their random locations and sizes. The twins got to show off their ability to recognize words they could not yet pronounce by pointing when you asked them "Where is the flamingo?" or "Do you see a flower?" Grouping the images by color makes each page you turn to feel fresh and interesting.』
(My 2-year-old LOVES this book!) 『My 2-year-old loves it, and so do the older kids that play at our house. It's a lot of fun, and very interactive for parent and child. Bonus: he uses his new vocabulary learned from this book all the time! Highly recommended, and I think it would be enjoyed by a very wide range of ages.』
(My boys love it) 『My boys and I look at this book over and over. They do not tire of finding things on the pages.』
(Fun integration of skills) 『My son, three, loves this book as does his older sister, seven. It combines many critical skills into one fun, interactive book. We have done it together over and over and even I look forward to playing with it again and again. Another lovely side effect-- my son's knowledge of colors and counting has improved dramatically through his love of puzzles and searches. I liked it so much I ordered a copy for my niece.』
(Learning on many levels) 『This is one of the first books to really capture my 15-month-old daughter's attention. She brings it to us to look at multiple times a day. Right now she's using it to learn vocabulary: she points out and names the things she knows and asks "dat?" for things she doesn't know. We're starting to talk about the colors in the book, too, and at some point we'll add the counting. I suspect this book will be a hit for many months to come.』 『

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Great book, but not a must-have) 『I ordered this book sight unseen as a prepub discount, because I LOVE color in my knits and loved the other Style books from Interweave. Once it came in the mail, however, I wished I'd seen the book before I purchased it. It's not nearly as strong as the previous Style books (Lace Style, Scarf Style, Wrap Style), with a few patterns that seem almost dated, and worst of all some are ... drab. There are also a few patterns that are almost too color-saturated, and would need to be toned down for most knitters. Plus, the sweater I loved the most was actually published in an issue of Interweave Knits (I believe the Winter issue) already as a promotional pattern for the book, which I found disappointing. The one part I do really love about the book is the Designer section at the back, which shows you how to design and knit your own color-coordinated projects, and shows the different techinques for each. This is where the style books excell, and I see myself referring to this section in the future when I work on my own designs. Overall: if you like fair isle/ski-type sweaters and a more traditional look to your knits, you may love this book. Otherwise, I recommend looking at it before you buy to make sure you're happy with your purchase.』 『

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Good book but scripts use CS3) 『A good book on digital comic coloring but with a rather huge flaw: A few of the lessons rely on the scripts included on the disc which only support recent versions of Photoshop.
We encounter this early in Lesson 1.4 which instructs us to copy the lineart to a channel. Instead of giving details on how this is performed, it tells us to use the script and moves on to the next chapter. What if we were using Painter or Paint Shop Pro? What if we just wanted to know how to do it manually? Setting up a Special Effects Layer and Color Separation are also Script-Only.
Oh, and the included brushes can't be imported into earlier versions of Photoshop either.
I can appreciate using scripts to automate simple tasks but Hi-Fi seems to forget not everyone has, can afford, or would even want to purchase CS3 (I have PS7 and will probably never upgrade). If you already know how to do these things, it's a minor oversight. If you don't, then you'll have to search the internet or you're left in the dark.
Overall, I did enjoy the book. Lots of good techniques, full color examples and step-by-step instructions (aside from those delegated to the scripts) with practice files on the disc.』
(BEST CHOICE for beginners!!) 『Hey, This BOOK is the BEST choice for beginners and Intermediate users.
I don't have any previous experience with PS. I've been reading tutorials around the net, I was almost frustated, after read Hi-Fi Color for Comics I changed my mind..
Now, I can do an entire comicbook page!!
If you find this one, go ahead, This is simply the best!
』
(Nicely done except its slanted more for Photoshop users) 『The first chapter claims that the tutorials in the book can be used for any image editing program but the tutorial often involves using Photoshop scripts. So with that in mind, if you use another program it may be difficult to convert the tutorial steps to fit whatever image processing program you use.
Despite that, the authors really know their stuff.』
(Not bad) 『Very nice "How To" book, however, many of the techniques CAN be sourced from the Web. My biggest critique and is the scripts included in the CD - if you don't get them up and running (Mac OsX users) half the tutorials won't work. THey're supposed to make it easier for you, but not if they don't work...other than that, good to see some of the techniques Hi-Fi uses. 3 out of 5』
(The best book on computer coloring) 『I've just started coloring a comic, and I wish I had purchased this book before I started! It contains SO MUCH information, from scanning, to prepping your drawings for coloring, to flatting and finally to coloring itself. Sure, some of this may be in the Internet here and there, but never in one place and never, ever explained so well.
In addition to the valuable information on coloring, he also includes some invaluable scripts from Hi-Fi, which removes the tedious process of setting up your channels, etc., as well as a script for color holds and finishing up the page.
All I can say is this is the best resource I've found on computer coloring for comics. In fact, it was so good, I ordered copies for two friends.』 『This is an exciting and complete instructional package starting with the basics and progressing through step-by-step demonstrations that take you from line art to full, awe-inspiring colour. It features instruction on equipment, scanning, setting up pages, colour theory, flatting, rendering, special effects, colour holds, colour separations, and even details on the business of becoming a professional colourist. The bonus CD-Rom, includes Photoshop tools and actions that pro colourists Brian and Kristy Miller use to streamline their colouring work, plus sample Photoshop files so that readers can work along with the demonstrations.』
