No wonder he writes in a technical, sometimes not easy to understand style. Even in German I have to read some sentence once again for a complete understanding. The book has many new pictures if one has read the previous "Color Design". Despite the poor translation, I still highly recommended it to anyone who wants to learn at detailed serious technical level.

(Excellent text on fundamentals) 『If you have read Michael Freeman's book, the Photographer's Eye, and liked it and you have patience for a bit denser treatment, you should like this one. Just be prepared for a lot of flipping back and forth to look at examples. Like Freeman, Mante, builds the concepts from points up though colors and then veers off a bit to cover more general topics such as creative unsharpness. As with Freeman's book I'll be reding it more than once.』
(Not good for amateurs) 『When I picked up "The Photograph: Composition&Color Design", it felt and looked like a textbook (and it was shrink-wrapped like one). But the title sounded good, and the author is well known in Europe as an author and instructor for many years. These inferences led me to make a bad conclusion as to the worth of this book to me.
I should have focused on the term "color design" in the title. This book is very technically oriented. While it does have over 600 photos and 160 diagrams (all very well done mind you), it was difficult for me to make sense of much of it. I get the full impression now that this book is geared for students of design and not a budding amateur. In reality, the concepts are just too much for the average layman (and I am not an uneducated person). It felt like I was being told, in very technical terms, why I like the color interaction or composition of certain pictures. I really don't need to know why, in my opinion. If I like something, I like it - simple as that.
If you are a student of design or photography, this book would make sense to you. It is unfortunate though that "The Photograph: Composition&Color Design" is the first book I cannot recommend for an amateur like myself.』

) 『In the under $15 range of books regarding the methods of illumination, this little book can't be beat--and it is better then a number of how-to's priced over $15. The book offers a historical survey of illumination, an introduction to materials, 5 projects small enough to be non-intimidating to beginners (without being too simple for those with experience), and a gallery of modern calligraphy.
The book is lavishly illustrated with color photos, and is written in a friendly manner--no difficult jargon here. There is a small glossary for those bits of calligraphy terminology that can't be avoided.
The emphasis of the book is on modern usage; if you are looking for a book regarding historical method, you may be a bit disappointed. The "hisorical" calligraphic hands are all modern adaptations, as are the techniques and projects. On the other hand, if you want a lovely book to assist you in branching into illumination, this is for you.
I do think that the technique section is missing some worthy tips. Too, this book is written for those who dwell in England. This makes the suppliers list pretty useless for anyone not in the British Isles, and makes those who still use English Measurement run for their Metric Convesion Tables.』

But don't take it too seriously as an introduction to mixing color. Babar may be king of the elephants but as a color theorist, he's a lightweight. Babar tells us that mixing the three primary colors makes black. Then, a few pages later, he tells us that to make brown you have to mix the three primary colors PLUS black. What? But I thought... Also strange--the "what will you paint with white?" illustration done in ice blue and every color BUT white. The problem isn't the contradictions but the fact that De Brunhoff sets himself up with the difficult task of bridging color theory, practice, and artistic convention in less than 30 pages. In a children's book! But kids will probably like the bright, clean illustrations. And - regarding the one review that called the book "useless" - that person must have been looking for magic. There is vital basic information in this volume that you definitely need in order to do your own color correction. That information will be transferrable to programs other than PhotoShop, although not in a precise step-by-step fashion. If you don't plan on purchasing a serious photo editing package, then you don't need to worry about getting serious about color management, and you don't need this excellent book!』
