(one of the best books on artmaking I've ever read)
『I read this book cover to cover, finding it both engaging and inspiring. I've studied plenty of other books on color, and this one doesn't take the place of detailed works on various color wheels and apporaches to mixing color. But! If, as an artist, I could own only one book on color, this is the one I'd choose -- because I know I can come back to it any time for more inspiration.

This book seemed to turn on a "color ideas" section of my brain, so I'd go to bed imagining colors to try the next morning, and dream in more colors too.

I'm especially impressed that the author presents a full range of approaches to color and painting. His own work is interesting but nothing I'd want to do myself, but he's confident and humble enough to include the work of many other artists as well.

Don't miss this one!』

(increase your color awareness:LeClair has good advice.)
『I was fortunate to study with a color aware painter Paul Wieghardt,52-53. Not all of the painters who studied with him are all that good in color: Robert Indiana, Leon Golub,H.C. Westermann,Jack Beal. But, this book brought back to me how Wieghardt was knowledgeable about color. He studied with Klee. Klee is one of the artists I find inspiring in color. I don't think Diebenkorn is all that good in color. I prefer his work in greys.Grey is color but ,I think artists that are capable of brilliant use are the best.In my own case, I grew in confidence in color ,as I was aware of color when I was fifteen.Instruction from other artists, who you like for their color... helps. There are instructors who have different taste in color. Some will like your work and others will not. This is a book stands alone in a difficult area that many fail to teach. However, he should discuss those artists who use color with sensitivity, daring.... artists who have variety in their use of color.LeClairs emphasis is on American artists. This book does a fine job as far as it goes... you need books on Matisse ,Klee, Bonnard,Cezanne. LeClair acknowledges different approaches such as those chapters on opart, expressionism ,conceptual art. The latter is a chapter that could be expanded.I once told the collagist Robert Nickle well known in Chicago that I liked his color. He was happy to hear that from me! He said. His color is subtle, shows sensitivityI have read a lot of books on color, including the British scholar John Gage. Unlike Gage the beginner will have no difficulty reading and gaining help from this book.I quarrel with the selection of plates ,but value the discussion here.』

(excellent)
『I feel I have a greatly increased understanding of the uses of color. This book doesn't make good/bad assertions, it just explains what is done, why, with examples. I make better color decisions now.』

(useless!)
『A book not good enough for beginners ...really more of a how-to-paint magazine lacking actual info on how to paint...better to study masters and take classes』

(My favorite edit)
『I edited this book many years ago and STILL consult it about color questions. (Yeah, I'm an editor, but I used to be an artist--one who, while I was still painting, desperately needed a book like this. And after that, needed it even more when I chose art history as my muse.)

Am I prejudiced toward this book? Yes, of course. For instance, I love Diebenkorn's work and helped choose the painting that graces the cover. And Charles Le Clair, the author, taught me so much, even though we sometimes did battle over his writing quirks (and my editing ones).

I see now, more than a decade after Color in Contemporary Painting was first published, that even though the paintings Charles used to explicate various uses of color are still valid in that context, perhaps a 21st-century update of some kind may be called for. BUT: Really, how much does color use change in major ways that differ from what Charles has presented?

SO: Here is a plea: Suggest some newer examples. I will forward appropriate ones to the publisher.』

(Not suitable for children adopted from Russia)
『This book was purchased for my grandchildren, both adopted from Russia. They will not receive it. Guess I'll give it away to be read by children who have no emotional interest in Russia. The tone of the book is too negative. Yellow is for the palace where Anastasia lived and played and could make anyone smile. She and her family were killed. Red is for communism. It didn't work but Russians "have not lost hope for a better future." Even the weather -- not that Russians enjoy their cold weather sports but "they make the best" of the weather with sports. Someday our grandchildren will learn more about the land of their birth and the problems the Russian people have faced. However, at elementary school age, they don't need to hear the worst first.』

(Beautiful, informative little book celebrating Russian culture!)
『This is a beautiful little paperback book that teaches children about various aspects of the Russian culture (the Alexander palace in Saint Petersburg (yellow), the red flag of the Communist party - as well as some history since then, the blue of Lake Baikul, the black of caviar, the gold of the Russian Orthodox church, etc.).

One thing that's nice about this book is that the Russian people portrayed are of diverse ethnic heritage. The people on the "White" page - white for snow - are Chukchis, indigenous people who live in Siberia. And on the green page, which is green for the grass on the steppes, a Scythian (one of the nomadic tribes) is pictured riding a horse. Since there are so many ethnicities in Russia it's wonderful to see a children's book that acknowledges it.

(An Exciting Learning Experience!)
『Although an adult, I still enjoy reading children's books, as you can see from some of my previous reviews. I found this book to be educational and very interesting, and believe that children will enjoy learning from it.

In Colors of Russia, Ms. Zemlicka uses different colors to convey a variety of facts about Russia. For example, the color orange tells us about the Siberian tiger, how it's the world's largest cat and is on the verge of extinction. To acquaint yourself and your child with Russia I highly recommend this exceptional book.』

(Eye-opening)
『After reading this book, you will never look at the sky or the sea in the same way again. Accompanied by beautiful photographs, including some rare sights in the sky, the book systematically covers atmospheric phenomena related to light and colour. For photographers it's a great book that will help you understand light effects in nature. The book is resplendent in the spirit of science: the topics are classified by the type of explanation for them: shadows, reflection, refraction and so on. This makes perfect, natural sense and really holds the book together. Some of the explanations include modest equations, tables and so on, but the text is always lively and readable. If you're scared of mathematics, buy it for the pictures. But be warned: this book will inspire you to go to Antarctica, chase solar eclipses, buy a telescope, and demand a window seat on every plane you fly for the rest of your life.』

(Beautiful.)
『This is a great book. The photography is beautiful. The explanations are clear. It's all very well done.』

(A required reference...)
『A wonderful book illustrating and describing numerous natural optical effects. Simply a must have on your shelf to whip out whenever something unusual plays out in your field of view. Entertaining to just take down and read as well.』

(Enjoyable account of light in nature)
『This book is intended for people who are intrigued or awed by the way light is expressed in nature. It describes many natural phenomena involving light, including shadows, the color of the sky, clouds, mirages, halos, rainbows, the effects of ice in the atmosphere and much more. The intended audience in my eyes consists mainly of people who like physics but the beautiful color full-page pictures and tips on taking them also make this book a great resource for anyone interested in photography. Even physics students can benefit from this book (although it is intended for laymen, so no equations are used) - the book shows them interesting manifestations of optics in nature. The book also makes a nice gift for people who enjoy nature and would like to know how it "works". Highly recommended!』

(A Cinematographers Delight !)
『I am sorry to see that this title is out of print. "Color and Light In Nature" is a wonderful look at the ways that light touches us everyday. I recommend this title for Directors of Photography as well as anyone captivated by light.』
『We live in a world of optical marvels - from the commonplace, but beautiful rainbow, to the rare and eerie superior mirage. Have you ever asked yourself how a rainbow is formed, why the setting sun is red and flattened, or even why the sky at night is not absolutely black? If so, then allow David Lynch to provide you with the answers. This beautiful and informative guide provides clear explanations to all naturally occurring optical phenomena seen with the naked eye. It offers complete and easy-to-understand insights into shadows, halos, water optics, mirages and a host of other spectacles. Separating myth from reality, it outlines the basic principles involved, and supports them with many figures and references. A wealth of rare and spectacular photographs, many in full colour, illustrate these phenomena throughout, with many helpful hints on how you can best observe and photograph them. Color and Light in Nature provides a complete, well-illustrated, and authoritative guide to seeing, photographing and understanding nature's optical delights.』
『Why is the sky blue? Why do mountains glow in the dark? Is the darkest always before the dawn?

An ideal reference to have on hand in answering questions such as these,Color and Light in Natureis an endlessly fascinating exploration of phenomena that are familiar to us all, but that even trained scientists take for granted. Take the question of why stars twinkle, for instance: twinkling, astronomers Lynch and Livingston observe, is strongest with stars that are low in the sky, and then on a clear and windy night, when starlight passing through the atmosphere encounters little pockets of turbulence that bend its rays "momentarily away from our eyes." Sunlight undergoes similar distortions, yielding mirages, "blinks," sundogs, halos, rainbows, "mountain light," and other wonders of nature, all of which the authors describe and explain in clear and accessible prose.

Lynch and Livingston encourage their readers to seek out and study these phenomena for themselves, writing, for instance, "No effort should be spared to witness at least one total eclipse in your lifetime." They go on to make a good case for why that should be so, and why the workings of light and color should be of interest to students of science. Their book is a lively companion and teacher.--Gregory McNamee

(A Questionable Reference)
『For frequent readers of "Southern Accents" magazine, this will just be a rehash of previously published photos. Unfortunately, it is not a particularly handy reference since inaccuracies in printing do not give the true color, or a different color from the original printing in the magazine in any case. Clearly it is an "armchair" editing job where the author never visited any of the rooms shown. There is no serious text on the use of color in interior design. Although there is the typical focus on a detail of a floral arrangement or place setting that is an infamous trademark of the magazine, the views of interior furnishings are generally interesting for those who enjoy traditional interior design. As designer credits are particularly lacking, it is not a good reference for interior design. However, readers of the magazine will recognize the work of Barry Dixon, Holden&Dupuy, Bobby McAlpine, John Tackett and Josie McCarthy among many others.』

(Good Coffee Table book)
『I thought the pictures were nice&some of the information was enlightening...but for the most part this is strictly a coffee table book.
I don't think that the book is totally useless as some have stated...but I also don't think it's the best either...
Living in the Midwest...I bougth the book out of interest to better understand the Southern mentality on design... It did offer some insights...but not to the extent I'd hoped.
I don't regret getting the book...but I got it for a good price...I wouldn't pay full price for it...but would appreciate it as a gift.

(beautiful photos)
『This book is wonderful with lots of beautiful photographs. There are colors that I never thought of using in my home, but this book has shown me that I can be adventurous and have splashes of pink or orange or brown, but still have a room look classic and elegant.』

(Limited in scope)
『Sadly, this book was a disappointment. The rooms are overdone and overwhelmingly done in dated traditional style. I wouldn't mind some classic traditional decorating, but it looks as if nothing but traditional style has ever made it south of the mason-dixon line! Sorry I bought this one.』

(SOUTHERN ACCENTS RULES)
『This is the fourth in the series of books written by the editors of Southern Accents Magazine. It is a truly marvelous resource guide for design professionals as well as "civilians" looking for ideas. Organized by color, the book showcases some of the finest rooms in the country, decorated by the best decorators working today. The text is both authoritative and fun to read, and the pictures allow us into some of the finest rooms in this country. There is nothing staid nor stodgy about this book. It underscores the absolute correctness that this magazine has developed under it's current Editorial team. While many rooms are tradtional in tone, there is a freshness and true sense of what contemporary decor is all about. While so many other magazines and books try to push "edgy" or "experimental" ideas, Southern Accents and it's books perfectly reflect the way people live now. As an industry professional, I read every magazine and buy every book on decorating that I can get. This latest book from Sothern Accents is as good as anything on the market. It is filled with ideas that everyone can implement into their own houses. A truly wonderful book that has a feeling of what a joy can be found in brilliantly decorated houses. The photography is flawless. This should be a must read for anyone who cares about decorating. And everyone should. Once again, the Southern Accents team delivers great beauty that is fresh and fun.』
『The newest book in this series takes a lively look at the resurgence of colour in our interiors. Over the last twenty years designers have emphasised neutrality and there has been a dearth of colour. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century much can be made of colour's vibrant return. The book addresses the aesthetic effect of colour versus neutral in interiors and offers suggestions on how to use colour when planning a design. Divided into colour-themed chapters the book again features photography from the magazine, with text discussing the designer's use of colour in an interior, tablescape or floral arrangement. Each chapter closes with a specific designer's perspective on colour and the challenges of translating them into a successful interior so that the colour feels so right, it's not even noticed.』

Lovely how-to on adding illumination to calligraphy

)
『In the under $15 range of books regarding the methods of illumination, this little book can't be beat--and it is better then a number of how-to's priced over $15. The book offers a historical survey of illumination, an introduction to materials, 5 projects small enough to be non-intimidating to beginners (without being too simple for those with experience), and a gallery of modern calligraphy.

The book is lavishly illustrated with color photos, and is written in a friendly manner--no difficult jargon here. There is a small glossary for those bits of calligraphy terminology that can't be avoided.

The emphasis of the book is on modern usage; if you are looking for a book regarding historical method, you may be a bit disappointed. The "hisorical" calligraphic hands are all modern adaptations, as are the techniques and projects. On the other hand, if you want a lovely book to assist you in branching into illumination, this is for you.

I do think that the technique section is missing some worthy tips. Too, this book is written for those who dwell in England. This makes the suppliers list pretty useless for anyone not in the British Isles, and makes those who still use English Measurement run for their Metric Convesion Tables.』

『This book is not for the timid, if the idea or sight of disease, mutilation&death bug you, then don't bother. If otherwise you find the subject matter fascinating or educational then this is a must have! Very Graphic&Descriptive. To those (you know who you are, ENJOY!)』
『A male homicide victim with a shotgun blast to the chest. A female drug addict who has overdosed on crack cocaine. An elderly woman with deep stab wounds to the neck. A two-year-old motor vehicle accident victim with blunt head trauma. For forensic pathologists, police detectives, and crime scene investigators, dealing with death and injury is a daily routine. But even after investigating thousands of drownings, shootings, stabbings, electrocutions, overdoses, and traffic accidents, most professionals in the investigative fields still haven't seen it all. Readily accessible and easily searchable, Forensic Pathology: A Color Atlas on CD-ROM provides much of the basic information that forensic pathologists and other investigators need on a day-to-day basis. Packed with 800 full-color, captioned photographs, this atlas examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, causes of death from blunt trauma, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows the various causes of death and injury with case examples -- "visuals" to help investigators understand the work they perform. Indeed, with its exhaustive coverage, the Forensic Pathology: A Color Atlas provides investigators with valuable insight into the many different causes of death and injury they must deal with and how these causes of death are diagnosed.』

(bone-chilling story)
『the 'national security' seems to become the green light for all kinds of authorities to do whatever they like and it's exactly what we are facing right now daily. when the communism took over russian , china and other eastern europe countries, their big word was 'the people', everything is for the peoples' interest. i still remembered when doctor zhivago came back to his home and found his house was confiscated 'by the people', he just ripped off that notice from the door and cursed: 'by the people?! i am also one of the peoples!' so the national secruity voodoo term being used by most of the governments now is actually the sameold sameold crap as the commuinist countries used to be implemented to do whatever they like to do in the (dis)guise of the law.
kevin kerney in this novel has to make some unwanted compromises under the excuse of 'national security' too and that's not quite appealing at all. this series so far is the best series i've ever read, and master storyteller, michael mcgarrity, never disappointed me. i just love the plot, the dialogue and scenario a lot. to me, the stories about this police chief of santa fe and that deputy chief of new mexico's state police are far better than what john sanford delivered in his 'prey' series.』

(A great series)
『I ordered one book in the series and ended up ordering all books featuring Kevin Kerney, What a pleasure to read books with good stores and I enjoy the characters, especially his wife, Sara.

If you want good reading, order the entire series and enjoy

(Black Helicopters)
『Michael McGarrity's name showed up in an article about "mystery writers." I ordered books by 4 different authors. I doubt I'll do that again...I'll stick to the Prey series and Coben.
While I enjoyed the trials and tribulations of the main character, I did NOT for one second enjoy/believe the government conspiracy aspect of the book. Sorry, Mr. McGarrity...but no more of you !』

(UNDERCOVER COLORS)
『This sixth entry in the Kevin Kerney series once again demonstrates the talents of writer Michael McGarrity. Kerney is embroiled this time with a huge government coverup. The first victim: Phyllis Terrell, the estranged lascivious wife of ambassador Harrison Terrell. Looks like her murder might have been an act of passion. Kerney's investigation however reveals a close connection with the murder of a priest as well. McGarrity brings back officious undercover agent Charles Perry, a brief appearance by Enrqiue de Leon, Kerney's nemesis from two previous books, and of course, Kerney's wife, Sara. Sara, now pregnant, is considering leaving the service so she and Kevin can build a better life together.
Again, McGarrity uses fellow police officers to aid Kerney, and with his usual flair for scene and substance, pulls off another remarkable entry in this excellent series.
Outstanding!』

(Colorful characters and a new direction)
『When I finished this novel from Michael McGarrity in the continuing saga of detective Kevin Kerney, it tooks me a few days to formulate how to write this review. All of it was positive and I couldn't be happier with the novel, however, I didn't know what angle to expound on that hasn't been discussed so many times about his prior novels.

Then it dawned on me. It was a departure from the norm of these novels. Certain loose ends were tied up once and for all, the ending wasn't what one would expect...that is, it wasn't neat and tidy. Also Kerney has progressed quite a bit, and author McGarrity introduced new ideas that surely will breathe life into the main character and makes for many sequels down the road.

But most importantly was the introduction of many new characters. While this was and still is a Kevin Kerney novel, McGarrity debuts several new characters in this installment, and I was surprised how fleshed out they all became. In some aspects this just wasn't a Kerney novel. Two other detectives come into their own and a good deal of written word was on the following of their exploits. It was like reading the same novel from 3 different and varying perspectives which was quite unique. Only at the end was it clear they were all after a common goal, and it was done brilliantly.

Again, the ending was a nice change. The CIA and a covert black-op organization aren't always fighting for good, or are they? The events that unfold force the reader to constantly re-evaluate the 'color' of law, and even though this novel takes place in New Mexico...events taken place here will shape how US policy effects other regions and Kerney's decisions he will never know what ball he sets in motion.

Great read!』
『Newly-installed Santa Fe police chief Kevin Kerney receives a deadly welcome when a U.S. ambassador's ex-wife is brutally stabbed to death in her home. But before Kerney can begin to investigate, the FBI closes the case with trumped-up evidence. And the harder Kerney hunts for the truth, the more he knows that he may not survive the chase.

"McGarrity does for New Mexico what James Lee Burke does for Louisiana...He's a natural born storyteller."(David Morrell)

"In mixing thriller with mystery, McGarrity has struck solid gold." (Houston Chronicle)』
