IPhone 3G used's review (First Rate) 『Tangerine Orange. Shocking Pink. Azure Blue. These are just a few of the colors offered in Color Healing Home. For those of you who love modern interior design but would like something other than beige and variations on white, then this is THE book for you. The book is divided by color and each color is showcased in beautiful modern rooms. Worth its weight in gold!! A+++++++++』
(Beautiful and Inspiring) 『I really like this book. The photos are beautiful. The author discusses what effect different colors have on your mood, i.e. paint your bedroom deep blue for restful sleep, red can cause exhaustion if it's not used sparingly, magenta-pink encourages introspection, etc. This book gives you lots of interesting ideas for adding color to your home, beyond just slapping paint on a wall.』
(a fun book) 『This is one of my all-time favorite books ... and I have a HUGE collection of books on color and decorating. Whenever I look through these pages, I want to do my rooms in every color I see, loving each page more than the next. If you ask me which was my favorite color, I will say, "All of them!" But then, my passion for color is the reason I bought this book in the first place. As soon as I opened it, I had to have it.
The book is broken down according to the colors of the spectrum and the color therapy use of each color (i.e., there are sections for "energizing," "uplifting," "balancing," "refreshing," "calming," "meditative," "romantic," and "grounded"). Each individual color has two or three photos. But this book doesn't just separate the colors as simply as red, orange, yellow, etc. It elaborates by breaking each color down into numerous shades and tones of that color. For the violet part of the spectrum alone -- which is classified as "meditative" in terms of color therapy purposes -- there are pages for the shades "very violet," "deep purple," "mood indigo," "fresh lavender," "lilac time," and "purple haze." Each has several photos.
Throughout the book, there are pages (and photos) for such luscious colors as "sunflower," "aquamarine," "fruit pastels," "sugar candy" ... and there are natural/neutral colors represented as well.
Just looking through this book cheers me up and inspires me. It is intelligently written as well. I highly recommend Color Healing Home to anyone who would like to bring more color and joy into their life.』
『
Transform your house into a haven of health and happiness by applying color theory to interior style. Organized by mood, fascinating text and hundreds of color photographs present color schemes to calm, invigorate, assist meditation, or promote passion. Revitalize busy areas such as living rooms with lively reds and vibrant pinks—but avoid hot colors in contemplative or relaxing spaces, where gentler hues and pale glass panels are ideal. These stylish ideas are just what the doctor ordered.

Cohen's method of colorimetric calculation, for which he received the Macbeth Award from the Inter-Society Color Council in 1992, continues to exert a pervasive impact on the color-science community. "Visual Color and Color Mixture" develops Cohen's signal achievement from its historical sources. Some of Vicki Ingham's other books have also been very good so keep your eye out for her name.
Positives....covered some great questions such as... Coordinating brick&it's various color combinations with the rest of the decor... Ceiling color....another good question rarely discussed in enough detail... Dealing with different colors of wood...there's one you don't hear much about...&wow....even discussed seasonal changes&how do adapt color for that.... Kudos for covering these important...much neglected topics.
Here's what I thought was missing... More in depth coverage on how lighting affects&changes colors. There should have definitely been some discussion on how/when/where to choose paint colors, finishes etc. Also sorely missing is some color help in dealing with specific style of homes, or period/heritage homes...etc. that would have been icing on the cake.
Overall I still give the book 4 stars....has some very useful info&found it to be helpful in many ways....my only caveat is that the book wasn't longer&even more detailed than it is. 』
(Excellent color resource) 『I like the overall organization of the book. It's a unique approach from other color books I have. It addresses the most common questions many of us have about color and then answers them, providing several options for each question. Great photos and explanations.』
(Good Book for Color Questions) 『I thought this book was very helpful, but it IS one that you will need to read to get the full scope of information. Even though the picture captions give some information, the real tips are in the text. It is a good complement to the BH&G book "Color Schemes."
This book addresses color by taking some common questions and providing solutions for addressing the problem. For example, "I Can't Change My Carpet, What Should I Do?, " provides several options using text and photographs of the solutions. There is a photo of a room w/blue carpet and Option 2 states to shift the color scheme in a new direction. They decorated the room with a taupe wall color and pulled in accessories that complement the blue carpet. It looks good.
I generally like decorating books where you don't have to read a lot and can get an idea just by looking at pictures. You CAN do that with this book, BUT you will miss a lot of good information and tips in the text.
If you are looking for books with various color palettes, I recommend "Color Schemes"; if you want a book that helps you solve some color dilemma's you might want to give this one a try. I think both books are great additions to a decorating library.』
(This book is very helpful and beautiful to look at.) 『I'm very pleased with this book. I wanted something that would help me figure out what colors to use, whether or not to paint the molding, and how to make one room flow with another. This book addressed all of those issues and more! I am very pleased with the layout and how the book is set up as a Q&A format. I would highly recommend this book.』
(boring and drab) 『This book doesn't look any different than any BH&G magazine out on the newsstand - and maybe it's the same thing just tweeked a bit. Lot's of pictures, but sadly this book offers few new or fresh ideas. Save your pennies, friends!』 『The only book about color that starts with the problems home decorators want to solve.
Problem-solving approach breaks color selection down to 10 basic questions and devotes a chapter to answering each question.
Photo-driven format illustrates options; text explains how to handle specific situations.』

Instead of just parroting the rumors and tracing the origins, it goes into depth about WHY the rumors are believable and what it says about race relations in the US.
If you're interested in urban legends and want something a little meatier, this book is an intelligent treat. It's denser than most books on the same subject, but it's also more rewarding.』
(Drawing upon more than twenty years of study and analysis) 『Drawing upon more than twenty years of study and analysis, by Gary Fine (Professor of Sociology, Northwestern University) and Patricia Turner (Vice-Provost of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of African American and African Studies, University of California, Davis) Whispers On The Color Line: Rumor And Race In America is a superbly presented, collaborative treatise on narrative folklore prevelent in contemporary American society in the form of legends and stories informally circulated among the general public, and which have served to confuse and reinforce misinformation regarding a wide range of social issues. These are tales traveling mostly by word-of-mouth and focusing a diversity of subjects ranging from alleged governmental conspiracies, to possible food tampering, to the foibles of celebrities. An impressive, seminal, and scholarly work, Whispers On The Color Line addresses how these gossip ladened tales reflect attitudes that blacks and whites have about each other, and how such stories serve a pervasive social purpose of "expressing the inexpressible. Whispers On The Color Line is a ground breaking work and highly recommended for Contemporary Sociology, Social Anthropology, African-American Studies, and American Popular Culture Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.』
(If you've ever wondered...) 『We've all heard the rumors. The rumors that Tommy Hilfiger is a racist. The rumors that Liz Claiborne is a Satinist. The rumors that KFC serves fried rats and that's why it can no longer legally be called Kentucky Fried Chicken. And most of us probably take these rumors with, at least, a grain of salt. Believability issues asside, from where do these rumor stem? What is the meaning behind them?
Those are the questions Fine and Turner attempt to answer, and their answers are quite informative. These rumors, when analyzed, tell us quite a bit about race relations. They allow people to communicate feelings that they otherwise would not feel comfortable communicating.』
『Legends are arguably the most common narrative form of folklore in American society. From sex acts to business transactions, from fashion to food, from heroes to heroin, rumors and legends take on every charged topic. Children circulate texts about toys and candy; teenagers share stories about sex, drugs, and rock and roll; young professionals commiserate over the hazards of the work world. These stories address aspects of life about which we receive mixed or ambiguous messages. Given that matters relevant to race remain confused and divisive in many corridors of American society, it is not surprising that rumors and legends that reflect racial misunderstanding and mistrust frequently circulate.Whispers on the Color Linefocuses on a wide array of tales told in black and white communities across America. Topics run the gamut from alleged governmental conspiracies, possible food tampering, gang violence, and the sex lives of celebrities. Such beliefs travel by word of mouth, in print, and increasingly over the Internet. In many instances these stories reflect the tenacious level of racial misunderstanding that continues to vex efforts to foster racial harmony, creating separate racialized pools of knowledge. The authors have spent over twenty years collecting and analyzing rumors and contemporary legends--from the ever-durable Kentucky Fried Rat cycle to persistent beliefs about athletic footwear manufacturers and their support for white supremacist regimes. These implausible stories serve many purposes: they assuage anxieties, entertain friends, increase our sense of control--all without directly proclaiming our own attitudes. Fine and Turner consider how these tales reflect attitudes that blacks and whites have both about each other and about the world they face. In an engaging and penetrating narrative, they brilliantly demonstrate how--by transforming unacceptable impulses into a narrative that is claimed to have actually happened--we are able to express the inexpressible.』

The plates are not as crisp as they could be, and the color quality is off. Altogether, a good introduction to the common tartans, but not the definitive guide the title suggests.』 『

IPhone 3G used's review (AWESOME!!) 『I own dozens of graphic design books and the Color Design Workbook is one of the most useful books I own. I highly recommend it. It not only breaks down the theory of color and how it applies to design, it also gives examples of how color has hindered or helped in real world design projects. The page design is also fabulous...glossy pages with interesting design, yet readable information. Using color incorrectly is one of the most common blunders in graphic design so understanding it is crucial. Note: This book discusses color theory and relationships, not color management. A good color management book is: Practical Color Management: Eddie Tapp on Digital Photography (Eddie Tapp on Digital Photogra)
This book is part of a TERRIFIC series of graphic design books by Rockport. (The series also visually looks great together since the publishers shrewdly designed all the bindings to match and line up together on the shelf.) So far there are only 5 (including the Color Design Workbook), but hopefully they will add more books to the very useful series: Logo Design Workbook: A Hands-On Guide to Creating Logos
Typography Workbook: A Real-World Guide to Using Type in Graphic Design
Publication Design Workbook
Layout Workbook: A Real-World Guide to Building Pages in Graphic Design』
(Very Helpful) 『I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding colours and their relationship with design. It's easy to read and has some great examples.』
(LOVED IT!) 『Has lots of ideas for color use. Loved the section on the cultural meanings of color. So many interesting things to consider. Has some basic color theory, how to convey your message with color, etc. Very helpful for the graphic designer or visual artist.』
(Good basic book on color.) 『This book was a good basic book on color. I feel that there are better books out there that go more into color theory and I'm in the process of looking for those. Overall this book is great for beginning graphic design professionals.』
(Lots of examples, little guidance) 『I bought this book expecting to find guidance on how colors work and how to use them. The book provides this, but not in the way I expected.
If you are looking for: - A deep discussion of color theory with specific examples of what works and what does not or - Insights from industry about how the choice of colors can affect production costs, choice of material, etc or - Information about tools that can help with color selection, matching or proofing, DON'T buy this book.
This book is about color palettes only and its approach is to give you lots of examples from the real world, from which *you* must build your own understanding of color. As a survey of the use of color by many well-known designers for clients of all kinds, this book excels. The most valuable parts are not the examples themselves, but the text accompanying them where the designers outline the reasons for their choices. All this is perhaps clear from the title, but I didn't think so.
A severe shortcoming of this book is it provides no examples where a choice of colors failed--for whatever reason.
Since readers have consistently criticized Rockport's use of the word "Workbook" for books in this series, let me suggest a way of looking at it that justifies it. The way I used this book was to go through an example, look at every line, fill, shading or photograph and use the color palette in several ways in some designs I cooked up-- constantly experimenting--until I felt I understood how those colors interacted and changed their overall feel. That's the workbook aspect that totally worked for me so I have no problems with this book being called a "Workbook".
If you regularly read graphic design sites/blogs, you won't find anything new in this book. But if you are starting on the path to understanding color in graphic design, this is a great resource.』 『
Designers know that color is an extremely vital part of any design project and not a subject to be taken lightly. For better or for worse, it affects moods and elicits reactions.
Color Design Workbook invites readers to explore color through the language of professionals. As part of the Workbook series, this book aims to present readers with the fundamentals of graphic design. It supplies tips regarding how to talk to clients about color and using color in presentations. Background information on color such as certain cultural meanings is also included. Color Design Workbook breaks down color theory into straightforward terms, eliminating unintelligible jargon and showcases the work of top designers and the brilliant and inspiring use of color in their design work.

I am currently coloring this one, and absolutely loving it.
The pictures are quite well rendered by Marty Noble, an illustration of a Renoir painting fills each page. I am finding them easy to do with markers or chalk. I think an older child could also do these pictures, age 10&up.
The subjects are interesting, showing men, women and children in various everyday situations and activities from the time period in which these paintings were done--a mother&her children in their parlor, a man&woman dancing in a cafe, young girls in their pretty dresses, a husband&wife in the garden of their home, and others.
Furthermore, a small image of each painting is shown on the inside front&inside back covers of the coloring book for those who wish to make it like the original.
The title of each painting is given underneath the drawing inside the coloring book, together with information on the size of Renoir's painting and the year in which the painting was done, and a brief history of Renoir is also given just inside the front of the book.
Highly recommended.
