After leafing through the pictures again and again, I was hit by the realization that his playful, even wild, camera technique is brought on by an instant perception of something significant in his surroundings that he, in nanoseconds, decided must be recorded. That is true instinctual photography.』 『Mark Cohen first came to the attention of the photography world in 1973 with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This iconic show proved to the art world that Cohen was the heir apparent to the explosive street photography of the 60s. Now, after the wild success of his first monograph of black-and-white work, GRIM STREET, Cohen’s masterful color work will be seen for the very first time. Rich with the subtle colors of the seventies, TRUE COLOR is a tour through Wilkes-Barre, the Pennsylvania mining town Cohen calls home, from the vantage of this unique artist. Originally an experiment in the difference between color andblack-and-white photography, the pictures included in TRUE COLOR, commissioned by the George Eastman House, became a project of their own. Cohen captures faces and actions from the ordinary to the bizarre, documenting life as it was lived on the streets on Wilkes-Barre. They are an astonishing collection of Americana and a complex testament to the vision of one of the era’s most intense and successful photographers.』

There are only a few stencils in the back of the book and they are all in full color with printing on both sides of the page so there would be no way to use the stencils out of the book. You could photocopy them for use but there are only about 10 pages of real stencil designs the rest are front and back fairly intricate artwork that would be not good for stenciling, but they make great little pictures for frames, etc.』
(BEST OVERALL Art Nouveau Floral Borders&Ornaments Collection Book for Artists) 『I have about two dozen books specifically purporting to be Art Nouveau 'collections', and NOT ONE, or even THREE COMBINED, come close to capturing what THIS book offers, albeit in the "floral" patterns category... To artists looking for a definitive 'starter' source, in the art of the period, for repurposing in art, crafts and decor (ie: wallpaper, fabric, pottery, woodcarving, etc.), pick up a copy of this book and forget the rest! I was able to find not only what I needed for several initial projects, but was inspired to START more new projects based on the sparkling ideas inspired by this plethora of lush color images. Only wished a CD-ROM was available to accompany this book with hi-res digital images, as it would have made importing images to my computer (for re-sizing, tiling, color changes, etc.) much easier than hand-scanning... Only my collection of (specifically) Alphonse Mucha art books surpasses the value of "Art Nouveau Floral Patterns&Stencil Designs", and that is only because I have not YET found a like compilation of M. P. Verneuil 'figure' designs.』
(Best of Verneuil) 『This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work. 』
(Good designs) 『If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.』
(Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions) 『I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.』 『
Magnificent collection of floral patterns and stencil designs, created by one of the movement's finest artists, includes 120 images of graceful garden flowers—foxglove, hollyhocks, columbine, lilies, among others, and 39 stencil designs of blossoming trees, reeds, mushrooms, oak leaves, peacocks, and more.
IPhone 3G used's review (Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color) 『Did you every wonder about the following?
Why do men tend to have darker skin than women? Why do the poorest countries have the darkest people? Why do some African American celebrities seem to get lighter over time? Why do I have a tan even when I do not go out in the sun?
If so, Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is a must read for you.
Thienna was born in Vietnam where white skin is treasured as a characteristic of beauty. Her mother, sister and brothers had a light complexion but she did not. This caused Thienna much distress.
By the time Thienna was twelve years old, her family moved to San Francisco. She tried several things to lighten her skin but it only darkened it. Thienna came to the conclusion that scientific research did not have the answer to her questions.
Since Thienna is a nutritionist, she started her quest by investigating how nutrition influences skin color. She was able to make many connections between what people eat and their skin color. As the author continued her research and experimentation, her skin color lightened. It is important to point out that she did not use any toxic or botanically based chemicals, no drugs and no steroids.
The author gives us some very interesting facts regarding Von Luschan's Chromatic Scale, the first tool used to classify skin color.
Thienna points out that melanin is the basic building block of your skin pigment; however, its characteristics make it very difficult to study.
The author states that one of the most important determinants of skin color is the amount of sulfur in the skin. If you change the amount of sulfur in the pigment producing layers of your skin, you can change the skin color.
Another factor in determining skin color is the environment.
Thienna gives the reader detailed information on selecting a diet that is good for the skin and tells us about foods and drugs we should not even touch.
Unlocking the Mystery to Skin Color is an intriguing and interesting book. It is very obvious that the author has done much research in order to be able to write this book. This book is easy to understand and gives the reader a thorough history on skin color. Throughout the book there are sections called "Warning" where the author advises the reader on what they should not do. There are several photographs, charts and lists to help the reader understand the points the author is making. The reader will also find a lists of "Dos and Don'ts" in order to have fantastic skin. Thienna backs up her research with several before and after photos of people who have been able to lighten their skin by using her method. If you are interested in changing your skin color or want more information about restoring damaged skin, this is the book for you. The author has done a thorough job in writing this book and if you ever had any questions regarding skin color, I'm sure you will find the answers here. As the author states, skin color is not fixed. Thienna gives the reader plenty to think about. I know it made me do a lot of thinking as I read this book. Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is highly recommended.』
(The guide to natural way of lightening your skin color) 『Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (2/08)
The first time I truly and really became aware of importance and influence of skin color was when I moved to USA 8 years ago. Growing up in Europe skin color just wasn't an issue, or at least not one that would merit more than a second's pause when one met somebody of a different race. I have to admit I never gave it much thought, and even after reading Thiênna Ho's book, I found myself quite surprised that my home country ranks among those with the absolute lightest people on the planet. Skin color was not and still is not anything that defines a person in my eyes, but unfortunately I had to learn that in certain parts of the world it truly mattersenormously. Whether we like to admit it or not, life in the USA is easier if you happen to be lighter skinned. I am not going to moralize nor preach about this issue; suffice to say that I do understand why a person would want to lighten her or his skin if they could do it safely.
Thiênna Ho's "Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color" carries a long subtitle, namely "The Strictly Natural Way to Dramatically Lighten Your Skin Color Through Diet and Lifestyle." While the cover photos failed to convince me that the color change in Thiênna Ho's own case was quite this dramatic, I seeabsolutely nothing wrong with the diet and lifestyle changes that she recommends. All of us would benefit from eating smarter, moving more, eliminating toxins and stress from our life, taking nice long baths and indulging in massages - which are some of her tips.
It is obvious that Thiênna Ho performed an outstanding amount of research while developing her method and writing her book. Just a glance through the over 40 pages of endnotes shows the great number and diversity of sources used in writing "Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color." The book is actually quite interesting reading for the general public as well, dealing with diverse topics such as the great variety of the human skin colors, melanin, influence of sulfur on the skin color, the role of the environment as well as several chapters on nutrition and lifestyle. The surprisingly easy to read and understand stylecontributes to the feeling that this book should not be intimidating to anybody - it is written in such a way that a general reader can get enough useful information; and the more advanced or a professional one will find another nearly 100 pages of data, tables and sources in the appendices.
Regardless of whether you pick up "Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color" because you truly want to lighten your complexion or out of sheer curiosity, I am certain that you will learn a lot of both useful tips and fascinating trivia about an attribute that we all posses and which oftentimes defines us - even when it should not.
』
(Can You Actually Change Your Skin Color?) 『Have you ever wondered if it is possible to change one's skin color?
In the Preface of her book, Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color, Vietnamese born Thiênna Ho, Ph.D asserts that she always was envious of her mother and siblings who were blessed with having been born with light complexions. Thiênna goes on to state that her complexion caused her a great deal of distress and as a result she was motivated to find out if it is possible to control one's skin color.
Unfortunately, when she was studying microbiology at San Francisco State University as an undergraduate student and genetic engineering as a graduate student, she was saddened to discover that scientific research had not reached the stage that would help her unlock the mystery of changing one's skin color. Consequently, Thiênna affirms, "if I wanted to have a beautiful fair skin, I would have to unlock the mystery myself!"
The findings presented in Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color are the results of Thiênna's extensive research in the fields of biology, chemistry, genetics and nutrition as well as her own personal observations and experiences.
Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color is divided into nine chapters wherein Thiênna explores how changes in human skin color are the result from changes in environment, diet, behavior, health, and emotional and psychological factors as stress. She further delves into such topics as the mysterious variety of human skin color, the history of skin color of our ancestors, melanin, the mysterious, molecule of skin color, the importance of sulfur and how are bodies uses sulfur, how environment affects skin color, the importance of crafting a lifestyle and diet and how it affects our skin color, what you should know about vitamins and minerals and their effect on skin color, why we should not touch photosensitizing foods and drugs, tannin and the problem with ultraviolet radiation, and finally the benefits of massage as a stress reducer and its relationship to skin color.
Thiênna contends that genetic heritage is not the all-important determinant of skin color. As she exemplifies, some dark-skinned population groups as the Lemba have for the most part European ancestry and the Papua New Guineans have mostly Asian ancestry. Moreover, Thiênna states that solar radiationdoes not have as important an influence on the skin color of population groups as previously believed. As Ho illustrates, if we refer to some brown- skinned groups as the Eskimo or Sami peoples, we notice that they have lived in the sunlight-deprived polar region for thousands of years, yet their skins are not exactly light.
According to Thiênna, one of the most important factors in the determination of skin color and one that is grossly overlooked is the amount of sulfur in your skin. As she points out: "When skin of any color has less sulfur available for its use, it develops a darker shade. When skin of any color has plentiful supplies of sulfur available for it use, it develops a lighter shade." Accordingly, Thiênna ardently believes that by changing the amount of sulfur in the pigment- producing layer of your skin, you can change your skin color. And in a nutshell this is the basis of Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color.
Essentially, Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color provides a road map showing how to enrich one's diet with sulfur-rich foods and how to adopt behavior patterns that will maintain high sulfur levels in order to lighten one's skin.
Thiênna asserts that after two years of practicing her method, which she calls her Natural Fairskin(tm) Method, her total body complexion lightened from a dark olive to a light olive. Her initial changes to her diet and behavior had not only evened her complexion tone throughout her body, but also naturally lightened her body including her nipples.
It should be mentioned, as indicated in the concluding chapter Lessons Learned, that the book is intended for people who want healthier complexions and not solely for those who want lighter and brighter complexions: "It is a `self-detective guide' that you can use to track down ways to undo the skin problems that concern you-in your own home without every using any drugs, toxic chemicals, or steroids."
In addition to its abundance of information, Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color also contains several interesting appendixes dealing with such topics as Van Luschan's Skin Color Scale, skin colors compared by countries, skin reflectance measurements, distribution of minerals, nitrates, and sulphates in volcanic ash, some chemical compounds released by three volcanoes, carotenoids in common foods, and common foods containing cyanogenic glycosides.
Although there are quite a few endnotes, it would have been helpful if there were references to additional reading resources as well as a bibliography, an index and suggested websites and additional reading resources.
Nonetheless, Unlocking The Mystery of Skin Color is a fascinating and accessible insight into the factors influencing skin color and should be of interest to anyone who wishes to know more about the possibility of changing its color without the use of toxic or botanically based chemicals, drugs or steroids.

This book is an excellent tutorial addressing color and fabric choices to help you make your quilt into what you were actually hoping for, whether it's calm, eye-popping, or traditional. The authors go through the color wheel, complementarity, hue, dominance, all in an easy interactive style using photographs of quilts as examples, as well as exercises and workbook pages. They also address variety in prints, floral, geometric, novelty, pattern size/scale, types of prints, etc. You can cut samples from your own fabric collection to cut and paste into a color wheel, complementary color pairs, and into index pages that are organized by color for a personalized "table of contents" of your own fabric collection to use when planning projects. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Beyond Brilliant. One of my all time favorites.) 『I cannot say enough good things about this novel. Cintra Wilson skewers so much of what I loathe about this ridiculous, lame, infuriating society. She also turns a brilliant eye at various countercultures, the misery of high school rulers, sycophants who kiss the butts of celebrities (even if they happen to be murderers), etc. In addition, this novel eschews lame gender stereotypes and isn't afraid to correctly call out certain walking stereotypes that other writers are too 'politically correct' to critique (misogynist rap stars, superficial gay men, the ridiculous drug rehab industry). Imagine--a female protagonist who does drugs, is ambitious yet self-aware, sexual, non-mainstream, and isn't a masochist who ends up in a dumpster or toting five kids around a suburb by the end of the book! The happy ending was a bit of a cop-out, but this book is too perfect for me to complain about a bit of wish-fulfillment. In addition, this book contains one of my favorite quotes of all time, as dreamt by the utterly sympathetic Ned: "The universe has only thirty six cycles, and all of them are corrupt." I check Amazon every week for another Cintra Wilson novel. I only wish I knew someone like her, as I live in the belly of the beast (her characterization of Los Angeles was right on) and it seems everyone except for myself and my partner has no problem with the utter lameness of Hellywood.』
(hilarious) 『This writer has incredibly keen powers of observation and puts them to work carving up the quest for celebrity. As a social satire, it is biting, hilarious, dark, scathing and extremely well-written. My stomach hurt from laughing so hard. Favorite interlude? The decriptions of the 80's San Francisco scene with the vampires and elvenfolk. Not a gentle read, in fact it's more of a kick to the chest, but my gosh it's hilarious.』
(Laugh out loud funny.) 『This is one of those books that you get so into you laugh out loud because it is so funny and you don't care who hears you. They make think you're crazy for laughing while reading a book but you know different. This book was great.』
(Scathing, entertaining, and surprisingly, er, moving?) 『I knew I had to read "Colors Insulting to Nature" after digesting Cintra Wilson's "A Massive Swelling: Celebrity Reexamined as a Grotesque, Crippling Disease" (one of the top five best titles of all time, IMO). Now, no one is going to accuse Wilson of having written a "deep" book here, but hey, that's not her style, and this is a full-out satire and criticism of our fame-hungry society. Why do you think the main character's name is Liza Normal? Isn't it considered "normal" in America today to be absolutely fame-hungry? What got me, besides the laugh-out-loud moments, was the fact that Liza actually truly grew on me as a character. I got emotionally involved in her plight, and the spate of friends and enemies (including her outrageously selfish mom Peppy) she deals with grew on me too. Wilson is dead-on in her grasp of so many aspects of underground as well as mainstream culture, it's uncanny. What could make this a better book? It could be shorter. Wilson writes wonderfully but there were scenes I felt could have been excised. All in all a great and worthwhile read, if you're not in the mood for "War and Peace."』
(Writing Insulting to Readers) 『don't believe me? check out page 96, the bit in bold type at the top of the page. the author (term used loosely) feels obliged to remind us that we, as readers, are "a vast repository of stories," and that she need only "toss out a select handful of hoary chestnuts to suggest certain templates, and you will start filling in the blanks."
to which i can only reply: author vastly overamused by her own dubious wit.』 『
Like any healthy, red-blooded American, young Liza Normal wants to be famous. Like "people will see me and cry" famous. She lacks only talent. . . .Colors Insulting to Natureis a scaldingly hilarious coming-of-age novel, savage on the exterior but with a heart as tender as a marshmallow chick. It is a remarkable comic debut.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.』 『Authors who write about the entertainment industry often extend promises of wit and edginess to attract an audience.Colors Insulting to Nature, bySaloncolumnist Cintra Wilson, delivers these qualities because it enters the fray not with a forgettably likeable protagonist predestined for a happy ending, but with an axe to grind. The object of Wilson's loathing is the "ego-porn" Hollywood that turns out formulaic story lines, making hapless, mediocre talents believe that their dreams of fame can somehow come true.
The central mediocre talent in this book is Liza Normal, who first appears in the story as an adolescent auditioning for a spot in a commercial. Imagine the child version of the Bette Midler character inBeachesand you're about halfway to understanding the tragic gaudiness of Liza's persona--though of course she is a sweet girl underneath it all. The novel follows Liza into adulthood, bringing other vividly drawn characters, including her shut-in brother, Ned, her narcissistic, alcoholic mother, Peppy, and a sadomasochistic dwarf named DelVonn along for the ride. Liza's cringingly funny attempts to win fame as an actress-singer never stop--and neither does Wilson's railing against the logic-corrupting, "ultimately demoralizing" messages from film and television that Liza has ingested from infancy. Will our heroine ever turn her life around and figure out that The Media made her do it? Will Wilson succeed in breaking free of formulas, or end up undercutting her own message with a fairy-tale ending? Readers who are drawn to darker comedies will enjoy finding the answers, and find this novel impossible to put down.--Leah Weathersby』
IPhone 3G used's review (Consider this if you do not fit in the usual cookie-cutter categories) 『There are many different opinions out there about the validity of personal color analysis. My personal take is that it can be very helpful to somebody who finds it difficult to see what really looks good on them or for those among us that just like to improve on their looks. I do NOT support the idea that books and advise like this be taken as some sort of strict rules as they do by some people and because of that I may be a little more forgiving than others if a book on color theories is not perfect. Having said that, I think that this book is the best on the topic. I have read most anything that has been published so far and while all systems have their good sides, there are some that always fall through the cracks as they do not fit into any of the categories. I am one of those, frustrated for a long time with most color theories, a very unusal Autumn, dark honey-blond with teal blue eyes and light skin with a light bronze cast, yet too muted in self-color to be able to look good in Spring's bright hues and too warm-toned to be able to wear Summer's muted cool tones, but I have always found myself drawn to Autumn shades and received compliments, felt very comfortable in them and my light skin looked nice and healthy even in the darkest chocolate browns. Now, none of the popular books acknowledges the fact that there are blond and blue-eyed Autumns, lacking the lightness in their look to be a Spring and the cool elegance to wear the light pastels of Summer, which wash me out. Autumns have to be redheads to have blue eyes or can be blond but then with brown or maybe green eyes. After noticing Bernice Kentner's book in a local library I knew that my instincts didn't misguide me, just that the other books did not take in account the exceptions that always confirm the rule. This book admittedly has some flaws, some grammar or spelling mistakes, and references to God, which I agree, has no place in a book like this, but all that did not bother me enough to be annoyed by it or to think less of it. What did bother me, however, were the images which did not match the description. There is the redhead that looks blonde in the picture, the "brownette" that is a darker blonde...and so on and so forth. These pictures helped none at all and might as well have been omitted. Contrary to some, I do like the fact that Mrs. Kentner describes the usual character of the types and blends. I do find this true. In myself and others. And I can definately see validity in her eye pattern theory. I do not really comprehend the comments or issues some reviewers have with the fact that make up and fashion advise are outdated. Well, without trying to step on anybody's toes, but this book was originally written in the 1970s and republished in the 80s. I knew that at the time of purchase as it is fairly easy information to come by and didn't expect such advise to be up to date. I did not find it hard to understand where she was going with her advise and alter it according to my taste and the 21st century. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book.』
(Not worth the money or time) 『I have many color books and this one was a huge disappointment from the contents to the few bad photos that are in it. The print is like a cheap paper back novel and the actual contents are boring and not very comprehensive or exciting. This topic should have lots of good color photos and illustrations to make any sense, this has almost none.. All in all, don't waste your money, spend it on Suzanne Caygill's book or other personal color books.』
(One to have for anyone interested in colour/colour analysis) 『Alright, the book's been re-published in 1983 which makes it look very old fashioned especially the pictures and unecessary references to 'god' (just a couple here and there nothing too bad though). But don't be put off by this. From all the books about colours and colour analysis I have read, there are some very clever remarks on this one. For instance the eye pattern therory (which for myself completely confirmed my not so obvious season) or the fact that your hair colour may not fit your season. The author gives a more flexible approach to the usual 'you fit in one season full stop' approach. If you already have several books about colour I definitely recommend this one. If this is your first interest in the subject, work out your colour along with other books (like the one from Carole Jackson which I find -retrospectively- not as good), you won't regret it! It can truly change your life and your sense of style.』
(the best book I have found on color analysis) 『I have been studying and researching color analysis for many years, and personally have found this book to be the absolute best in the field. Ms. Kentner gives you genuine scientific information regarding your skin, your eyes, your personality, your face shape, etc., to help you find where you fit in the seasonal spectrum. She has done much more in depth research than most of the other authors, most of whom seem to view it only as a "fashion and style" subject, which it is not. If you are truly interested in learning about yourself and others, read this book.』
(Bernice Kentner's book "Color Me A Season";) 『I have read MANY books on color seasonal theory, but could never fit myself in any category since I have traits from three different seasons ( a thing that isn't supposed to happen), but this book by Bernice Kentner hit the target in her explanation of her "Firelight Winter";Angela. The drawing was me, as was the written explanation. According to Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful" says blonde Winter's are very rare (so I assumed I couldn't be one),and also according to Ms.Jackson, I have Spring eyes, and Summer hair,(and Winter skin = porcelain).Color Me A Season is a breakthrough books in seasonal color theory as far as I am concerned.』

The pictures are excellently drawn, in FULL COLOR, and filling an entire page. Most of the pages show two ladies in lovely costumes from the period.
The brief text either explains the occasion for which the dress would be worn, or the materials and fabric of the gown.
There is always a bit of background color behind the ladies so they are not on a stark white page, yet the background does not, in any way detract from the ladies and their apparel.
There are more detailed explanations of each of the gowns featured , listed and numbered, at the front of the book.
There are also a couple of pages featuring various bonnets and hats for spring and winter wear.
