(Poems about Colors for teachers)
『I really like this book of poems. The pictures are lovely. Some poems have just a few lines and some poems are longer. The second language students and native English speaking students enjoy these poems.』

(A Poetic and Photographic Feast)
『Yolen and Stemple have created a visual feast in their, "Color Me A Rhyme." As usual, Jane Yolen's poetry is excellent, but what sold me on the book were the amazing photographic layouts of natural images in green, grey, orange, purple....Each two page spread in the book has a Jane Yolen poem about the featured color, other names for the color (for white: chalk, snow, alabaster and bone), a literary quote about the color, and at least two lovely juxtaposed photos. You have to see the book to really appreciate its gorgeous layouts. This book would be excellent in the early grades, where teaching concepts is emphasized, or when teaching creative writing. Kids could all write their own color poems. I also think young artists would enjoy the varieties of color represented in the volume. How many kids know the varieties of blue? Some of its names are lovely and mysterious--cerulean, sapphire, azure and turquoise. Let them experience these colors in this fine book.』

(a wonderfull must have)
『let's start by the conclusion.your chances of running "colour" software without this book are purely and simply unexisting. How can you..?where to start...?
considering mostly colour is a must have software.
so the book is great and the excercises fantastic. It is very nice to learn in those conditions』

(Great quality from Apple, not from Amazon)
『All the Apple Pro books are great tools for anyone that does video editing. However, my copy of Color came with the top left hand corner of the back cover ripped off. I expected better quality since I was ordering directly from Amazon.』

(fantastic book. no expensive course required!)
『I waited a long time before this book arrived but it was completely worth it. I edit on Final cut pro but never really did too much with respect to secondary coloring. I used the color correction tools with Final cut but they are not very good for precision coloring. I've always peeped through the window admiring da vinci system and even considered buying Final Touch but didn't have the nerve to pluck down $20K. Then Apple bought the company and folded it into Final Cut suite. I upgraded immediately. I soon found that i was out of my element in Apple Color.
The manual that came with Apple color didn't help that much either. Yes i could color but didn't always get the exact look i was going for. I concluded that only Da vinci system could give me the look i wanted.
Then came this book. It thoroughly explained the right way to mix and match to get precise looks, from skin tone to mood.
This book is worth twice it's price. Forget going on any silly course. read it and practice and you are good.

I'll say this for Apple color. It can color as good as any da vinci system. It is 10 times slower to render unless you create a huge cluster, granted, but the end result is the same. Anyone tell you different is trying to justify their higher rates.

(A good choice to learn the software)
『Aside from the frustrations of the "one-star-reviewer", one must consider that the purpose of this book is to teach how to use the software. Apple is making professional tools available to the "general public", and is offering a training series of which this book is a part.

One assumes that if you're an industry professional, you're well on your way, without the need for "training wheels". But if you're like me, more or less still exploring the richness and the depth of Final Cut Studio 2, then this book is a must for you.

I was a bit frustrated about the long waiting period and the delay of the publishing date and was close to cancelling my order, but I am happy I own this book now. The book may seem a bit meager and I wish for more examples and exercises in an updated version, but I feel it gives me a great headstart in learning how to use Color and I feel confident enough to explore all the possibilities on my own.』

(Disappointing)
『I ordered this in June of last year and I wish I'd not. I'm a live tv camera shader so my background is in color manipulation. If you have absolutely no idea how to manipulate colorimetry, this is not the book for you at all. It tells you how to drive the software with some helpful color hints scattered about. Read the manual, work in the application, scour the net and Amazon for information about color and you can learn the same stuff.

If you have a background in color manipulation, skip this book and read the manual to learn how to drive Apple's Color. If you're like me and enjoy constant learning, run and pick up "Encyclopedia of Color Correction" by Alexis van Hurkman. It's a far more useful text than this title.』

『In this guide to Apple’s masterful new color grading and finishing application, award-winning colorist David Gross starts with the basics of color balancing and correction and move on to the fine points of secondary grading. Topics include scene matching, using vignettes to isolate and track regions, creating advancedcolor effects and “looks,” skin tone adjustments, and adjusting the composition and framing of a shot. As with the other titles in the Apple Pro Training Series, each chapter in this Apple-authorized guide represents a complete lesson--with a project to complete and a review section to reinforcethe lessons. Superb footage, including several BBC productions and broadcast commercials, provide real-world examples for you to work through as you master this revolutionary software.』

(Lovely pictures, great information, gorgeous color palettes, what more can a beader want?)
『Margie Deeb hits a home run with The Beader's Color Palette, a lush 192 page book full of inspiration, color palettes and jewelry projects. The book opens with an introduction followed by brief sections on how to read the palettes and creating palettes. Margie then jumps right into five gorgeous chapters entitled, The Elements, Artists' Historical Palettes, Cultures of Our World, This Gorgeous Planet, Living Color. The book ends with a chapter on inspiration and techniques including a gallery full of lovely artisan made beaded jewelry. The jewelry projects are rated which I found very helpful. Margie includes the inventory/color number of the Delica seed beads used in the projects. If you're looking to create the jewelry exactly as Margie has written them, this is just the information you'll need to make an exact replica. If you just like a particular color, you'll have the inventory number so you can get the beads in the color you desire, a detail not always available in a jewelry project book.

Lovely pictures, great information, gorgeous color palettes, what more can a beader want?』

(Wonderful use of history, culture, fantasy in regards to making the perfect colored piece of jewelry!)
『For those of you that are hesitant about this book, please review the "Search Inside this Book" link underneath the book cover image again. As you can see from the table of contents, the glory of this book IMHO comes from Deeb's use of historical color combinations and designs, to cultural variations, and fantasy. Included are natural stones from the earth and representing the elements (earth, water, air, fire) - not just Delicas as Deeb is so fond of using (with the appropriate color numbers listed for the projects and recommendations). This focus is very different than other beader books and much appreciated as many jewelers often focus on cultural, historical, etc. when developing their own designs. Unfortunately only 20 of the designs are discussed in depth so one can mimic the design, but there are soooooo many other wonderful images of jewelry designs that add to the creativity pathway for all beaders to begin from - not to duplicate! So I really consider this more of a book that compliments Deeb's earlier book on color (using primarily Delicas) and a necessary reference book for all serious jewelry designers to have and use. A true classic book that will definitely withstand the test of time in regards to design and color.』

(Brilliant for Beaders)
『The Beader's Color Palette by Margie Deeb (Watson-Guptill US $24.95; $27.59 CAN) mixes beads, brains, and brilliance. Beads, of course, refers the the fact that this is a book for beaders. Brains relates to the fact that you will need to use your brain - in a good way - to get the full use of this text. Brilliance refers to the amazing (in many cases jaw-dropping) jewelry designs packed between almost 200 pages that make up the book. Read the rest of my review here: http://jewelrymaking.about.com/od/beadbooks/a/072608.htm』

(Great book!!)
『This is an excellent, high quality book! I'm thrilled at the color palettes and the BIG photos!

My only criticism is that the type size, especially for the project materials, is microscopic. And in some places, the type is even a very light color, making it even more difficult to read. As a graphic designer myself, I'm not sure of the reasoning for this.

At any rate, I guess I'll get some new glasses 'cause I know I'll have this book around for years!』

(Inspirational Photos)
『I don't find the color palettes very helpful, but the photos of the jewelry are excellent for ideas for my own beadwork.』

World's Great Men of Coloris a comprehensive account of the great Black personalities in world history. J. A. Rogers was one of the first Black scholars to devote most of his life to researching the lives of hundreds of men and women of color. This first volume is a convenient reference; equipped with a comprehensive introduction, it treats all aspects of recorded Black history. J. A. Rogers's book is vital reading for everyone who wants a fuller and broader understanding of the great personalities who have shaped our world.

The companion volume covers the great Blacks of Europe, South and Central America, the West Indies, and the United States, including Marcus Garvey, Robert Browning, Dom Pedro, Alexandre Dumas, Joachim Murat, Aleksander Sergeevich Pushkin, Alessandro de' Medici, St. Benedict the Moor, and many others.』

(The next Horatio or Jack?)
『I've been reading "sea stories" for the past 40 years since I discovered Horatio Hornblower and I think Charles Hayden has the potential to be listed along with Hornblower and Aubrey. I can't wait until the next book...

(What a wonderful novel for me to start my adventures with.)
『I must confess immediately that this is the first naval fiction book I have ever read, in any historical time period. I get queasy just standing on shore watching a boat bob in the waters of our local river but I saw that a friend of mine had read this book and I was curious. I am extremely glad that I decided to branch out a lot and include this nautical historical tale in my reading.

This was a wonderfully written, exciting book for me. I have nothing to compare it to, nothing from other authors to help me in my understanding of the technical aspects of the book. I didn't need any previous experience. I was able to figure out anything of a technical nature because the author presented it in such a reasonable, rational manner that I soon deduced what was happening and didn't let my lack of knowledge hamper my enjoyment. When I finally closed the book at well past midnight last night (this morning) I realized how sorry I was to see it end. All of the characters who will obviously be included in the next installment are characters I want to meet again. Mr. Russell made me invest the emotions of sympathy, devotion or dislike by his vivid development of the men and women involved in the story.

As other reviewers have pointed out, Lieutenant Charles Hayden has a serious problem to overcome while serving in the Royal Navy. Having a mother who is French and a father who was English, Hayden has always lived in two worlds. Now, in the year 1793 and with the French Revolution taking place he is glad that he decided to put himself firmly on the side of the British. Yet no matter how often he reminds himself that he is English the French blood flowing through his veins remains a constant reminder that such decisions are not as easily implimented as made. Circumstances continue to cause him to realize that his parentage can be both a help and a hindrance, depending on how he chooses to use his childhood experiences.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this chapter in history. To be able to do so while enjoying a fictional re-enactment of the time period made for an absorbing reading experience which I shall not soon forget. Lt. Hayden has been written to be a very proficient hero, able to command ships, even on a temporary basis, while either in port or during naval battles and to outwit his enemies on their own soil or in the political games being played. It seems impossible to believe that Hayden would have been considered such an unimportant part of the Royal Navy simply because of his lack of "connections" or that Captain Hart could have risen to such a prominent position, again, simply because of the "connections" of his wife. And yet, Hayden's abilities have been noted, and noted by very important people within the Royal Naval hierarchy.

Even viewed from the perspective of a reader completely unfamiliar with the subject matter of this book I can say with no hesitation that I am looking forward to the next chapter in the naval career of Charles Hayden.』

(What a terrific read this is!)
『Occasionally a book comes along which, when the final page is turned, leaves the reader begging for more. Under Enemy Colors delivers in spades, with expertly drawn characters, pulse-pounding action, and enough nautical detail to sound authoritative without boring the landlubbers. One hopes that this is the auspicious beginning of a long, long series.』

(Engaging, exciting read!)
『It is obvious that Mr. Russell has done his homework, providing us with a very entertaining story.』

(Entertaining navy romp)
『Hayden is half French, not a good thing to be when Britain is at war with France. Add to that his posting to a ship to serve as second in command to a cowardly and bullying captain and a crew on the edge of mutiny...
This is the kind of stuff lovers of Hornblower will enjoy - not too much in the way of sea battles, but good characters and and interesting scenario. I found the dialogue a little too formal (there was one early scene with a friend's wife who was referred to as Mrs all the time - took me ages to work out it was his wife not his mother!) but once on board it settled down and turned into an entertaining story. Hayden himself is a little too perfect but that aside, this turned out to be an enjoyable read. I will read the next one and hope the author will lighten the formality a little and continue to develop the characters - it was a good first novel and I suspect things can only get better...』

『A sweeping novel of maritime mutiny set against the backdrop of the French Revolution that evokes such masters as Patrick O'Brian and Bernard Cornwell.』

(Happy Baby, Happy Mom!)
『We received this book as a gift at my baby shower. I thought it was cute, but didn't realize it's true value until I had a 6 month old on my hands and I was looking for things to do with him. Not only was this my son's favorite book for many months, it was mine because I was teaching him his colors as well as having a good time with him.

I recommend the entire Happy Baby series to every mom I know. I can't say enough good things about it. I like that it's a soft slightly squishy board book, and sturdy. I love the colorful and bright pictures through out the book. I also like that it is more than the colors of the rainbow, it also includes black, white, grey and brown, which not all color books do. I also love the fact that for each color there are 4 objects of that color, so not only is my son learning colors, he's learning names of different objects as well! And last but certainly NOT least, my SON LOVES IT! He's nearly 2 now and these books are still some of his favorites.

So, if you're a mom of an infant/toddler or buying these as a gift for one, these are a SURE BET. They are also reasonably priced in my opinion. Other books in this series we own and enjoy are the Words book and ABC's. We'll definitely be buying more too as time goes on. Way to go Roger Priddy!!』

(Great book for toddler!)
『I bought this book for my son who is not quite two and is learning his colors. This is a great book - larger than most but not "big", high quality with hard pages, and a semi-soft "cushy" cover. The items pictured on each page are good discussion items with your toddler as well. My only negative is that on some pages like "black" the objects shown are not all black which can be confusing - like a white sheep with a black face or a black wheel with a red hubcap. Overall, though - a great book to learn colors.』

(What a beautiful book!)
『I read the reviews for this book and just had to have it for my twins. I was so pleased when it came. It is really well made, a good solid board book with a nice cover. The colors and pictures that represent them are just beautiful!! My kids took to it immediately and wanted to read it over and over again, and I enjoy reading it with them. This is going to be my shower gift or new baby gift for any friends or family from now on! You will not be sorry with this book!! (I also bought the "My Big Animal Book" by Priddy books, too, and it is just as stunning!!!) I am a devoted fan of these books now!』

『great for identifying objects&colors. bright and cheery so babies and toddlers love to look at the pages.』

『This book is FANTASTIC! I loved how easy it was to read by the catagories and the point form facts. This book must be read in adjacent to Living Your Colors- By Tom Madden as it goes into deeper and better explainations of discovering what your colors are. I can stop reading it! I read to my family and my friends when I read something about there 'color' that is bang on! Highly recommend!!』

(Useful, Enlightening, and Applicable!)
『I had briefly looked through this book at work and after buying it, was so happy I decided to do so! The information presented in the book can be applying in many areas of life: teaching, working, friendships, relationships, family, and even with fellow musicians! Although learning about other personalities helped me understand how to deal with and be patient with other personality styles, it really helped me understand more about myself! I learned that certain behaviors and reactions that I have are actually normal. I have a higher confidence, because I know that how I am reacting is okay and I now know how to internally deal with it! I am a blue personality by the way...

(Puts you in the room with amazing colorists)
『Someone once told me, "The best way to learn how to color is to watch someone doing it." Gaining access to someone at that level can be difficult (and expensive). At that time, I wished I had this book. The author puts you in the room with some of the best colorists working today. It's interesting to see how each colorist approaches a scene differently and how the elements of the picture can motivate the color. For instance, one colorist may see football as the subject, another might be moved by the gritty dirt smeared over the side of it.

Whenever I need inspiration, I turn to the last chapter in the book, "Creating Looks." This book gave me new direction that I hadn't considered in the past and has helped me build my own "PowerGrade" library. It is by far the best book that I have found on the subject both technically and artistically.』

(Finally know what all those adjustments do)
『The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction

If you've ever tried to color correct in your NLE and have no idea of what all the adjustments mean (such as "input Black") and have been trying to teach yourself the software by just moving the knobs and looking at the results, then this book is for you. I am amazed after reading the first third of the book how much I have learned and how to use the built in scopes that come with most software. I may never become a colorist, but it sure makes my in-house projects far better. And when the day comes that I need to hire a colorist, I feel like I will be better prepared to speak the language. This will be another reference book that will be worn out from daily use.』

(An excellent book!)

I 'searched inside this book' and after reading the table of contents and the first few pages I decided to buy it. I had my reservations - not because of what I had read in the intro, but by the last few DV books I had purchased on Amazon. I am, I suppose, something in between a novice and an intermediate editor, and I edit on Sony Vegas Pro. This I have found puts me in a rather awkward category. In the past, all of the 'how to' books I've read have been far too basic or software specific.

What I really appreciated was the tone and pitch of the book. Most of the time, I find introductory books condescending - they seem to assume your inexperience equals a lack of intelligence (and corny jokes are unbelievable).

Before I read the Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction, I new more or less nothing about colour correction - my former corrections, dare I say it, were largely made using the contrast/brightness control - but this book made perfect sense to me. Steve Hullfish writes enthusiastically and encouragingly, and the book I believe would suit novices and pro's alike. The clear definitions in the margins are an excellent idea and are perhaps the key to the book's ability to transcend the novice/pro divide. If you understand the terminology move on, if you don't the explanations are right there.

Although the book does not give examples from Vegas. It explains colorist parlance in useful analogies, and offers suggestions about where to look for color correction tools in NLE's other than Avid and Apple Color. By in large, I found Vegas had most of the tools, scopes etc, and although I love Vegas, after seeing what Apple Color can provide, I do have a little 'application' envy.

One last thing... here's a small anicdote: I recently made a short film on HDV and showed a couple of people who liked it and before I new it, I was being mentored by a large post production studio. I asked them for some advice on corrections. I ended up sitting down with their senior colourists, watching the film on the big screen and talking shop with them for a couple of hours. We were talking about masks, vignettes, secondaries, colour casts, gamma and all sorts of things that, to be honest, I new nothing about until I read this book. It seems there's no substitute for experience, but because this book is full of advice from colourists with many years of experience, why not learn from your mistakes before you make them!

(American Cinematographer loved it)
『I disagree with the reviewer who said that the book claims that it's impossible to color correct with Adobe products. The MAIN readers of the first color correction book by the author were After Effects users, many of whom followed the advice of noted After Effects gurus, Trish and Chris Meyer.

American Cinematographer magazine's reviewer said this about the book: "likely to become the definitive text on the subject. Sensibly organized, lavishly illustrated and varied in perspective, it's a dense but highly readable summary of the current state of the art."

The cool thing about the book is that it is NOT platform or product specific. The author sat in on sessions with more than a dozen colorists around the country as they all graded the same images. The book walks the reader through those corrections from the viewpoint of these master colorists, instead of from the solitary viewpoint of the author. That's the value of the book. You are literally sitting in with people who have graded TV shows like "24" and "Desperate Housewives" and "LA Law" and "48 Hours" and movies like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spiderman" or those beautiful NFL Films.

This is a book for anyone using any software product. It is a book that is more about "why" to do the things you need to do than about "how" to do them with a specific piece of software.』

(Not just "How To" but "Why Do")
『I originally wrote this review for my blog and decided to post it here since I think it'll help potential buyers decide if this book is for them. Enjoy...

First question: Is The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction worth reading?

Answer: Yes! Absolutely.

Second question: Is it targeted at newbies or advanced users?

Yes. To both.

The first two thirds of the book "Primary Color Correction" and "Secondary Color Correction" deals with the fundamentals of our toolsets: monitoring, understanding waveform monitors and vectorscopes, balancing shots, vignettes, HSL isolations, and more. While this part of the book can be safely skipped over by more advanced users to whom all that info is second nature, Steve Hullfish does a nice job of surveying how different software apps approach the same concepts. And when a particular software package has a unique tool for achieving a particular task, he breaks it down for the reader.

The upshot: Even if you're experienced colorist on a Symphony you'll walk away with a strong understanding how other software apps work and what you might be missing (or what advantages you may have that you didn't realize). My advice, advanced users should at least skim through these parts paying particular attention when Steve takes a moment to pull a quote from the working professionals he features in the last third of the book. There are some great tips in these sections - especially on how different colorists set up multi-display scopes to help them nail black balance or tweak color values. I ended up changing some of my displays and found a few new setups that I really like.

Overall, the first two parts are not a dumbed down discussion. While Steve starts by laying down the ground-work emphasizing monitoring and external scopes (the latter being a deep discussion that permeates the entire book - which I very much appreciate), he seems to anticipate some of his readers finding material redundant and thankfully breaks out basic terminology to sidebars. Appropriately, those early chapters work through the subject matter in the same order a colorist will typically approach their problem-solving.

The final third of the book "Pro Colorists" is likely where the advanced users will want to begin. Why? That answer leads us to our third question...

Third Question: What makes this book different than other color correction books (or DVDs)?

The soul of this book is contained in the last few chapters and on its supplemental DVD. Steve sits with over a dozen accomplished, professional colorists and puts them in front of a common software color grading platform, Apple's Color (at the time called Final Touch HD), with a Tangent control surface. He gives them all the same set of footage (also provided on a DVD), presses 'record' on a DV camera and grills the colorists about the approach they are each taking to color correcting those images. The result is the author presenting up to three colorists approaching the same shot using different techniques. Or the same technique being used on different shots. Usually in the words of those colorists. It's a great education.

Even better are the transcripts Steve provides on the DVD that didn't make it into the book but he thought were informative. I've just started to read those and already I've gotten some new ideas about different approaches to common challenges.

Another thing that differentiates this book is its largely software-agnostic approach. Color, Avid Symphony, After Effects, Color Finesse, even Photoshop are all featured in the first 2 Chapters alone. Where interfaces are similar, Steve picks a software package and follows it through - pointing out where users of other apps might find things different. I suspect that if iMovie had a color correction module Steve would have a found a place to feature it.

Fourth Question: Any final thoughts?

This is clearly a book about concepts, not tools. As much as it necessarily covers the How To of working with color correction software, it's the Why Do that is emphasized.

In fact, Why Do is the whole point of the book.

Read it. Live it. Learn it.』

『Provides direct access to the skills, insights and techniques of some of the postproduction industry's most prominent digital video colorists, delivering practical skills to the postproduction pro seeking to improve their color grading craft. The author interviews and observes 8 professional colorists as they grade a series of real world video images, describing the methods and techniques each artist uses to reach their finalized image. These video images are included on a DVD that allows you to work lockstep with each artist as they grade their images.

Though some tools provided may differ from one product to the next, the basic process of video color correction (grading) remains the same. Application agnostic and sure to inspire, The Art of Digital Video Color Correction will further your artistic skills, whether you're an editor, compositor, or colorist, and allow you to apply those skills to the grading process, making your finished image sharper, crisper and more aesthetically pleasing in general.
