(A Must-Read)
『This is a must-read for anyone interested in the Civil War, its navy, ships, Cape Cod genealogy, biography and adventure. Author Miller has accomplished the nigh-unto-impossible by organizing tens of thousands of researched facts - ingeniously annotated and cross-referenced - into an immensely readable book about the 179 Cape Cod naval officers. It starts with "the transformation" (how Cape Codders became naval officers)and explains the uniforms, pay rates and ranks. A glossary of nautical terms,a list and description of the ships they served in, snippets of personal letters and newsy items from the papers of the day add a lot. Starting with Sandwich, Miller works his way down the Cape to Provincetown giving an overview of each town and mini-biographies of its naval officers. The reader will find heroes and scoundrels, tragic stories, bravado, illnesses and medical care, disciplinary actions, excess and deprivation, and encounters with famous people of the day. Miller breathed life into dusty military records and 179 Cape Cod men emerged. His marvelous dry wit enhances their virtues and foibles during this super-macho era. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. It would make a great Christmas gift.』
『After painstaking research, Stauffer Miller has put together the story of Cape Cod, Massachusetts' many ship captains and mates who put aside their careers as merchant seamen to don the uniform of Union Navy officers in the Civil War. What made them do it? What was the effect of their actions on their families, or themselves? Here is their story, often of conflict within a conflict.

In many cases, these men were close to great newsmakers of American history, as illustrated by two book excerpts. The first is an observation by Benjamin Dyer Jr. of Truro, on the gunboatMahaska:

"City Point, Va, May 28, 1862. We are now quite close to famous Monitor, and a queer-looking craft she is. She looks like a raft with a circular tower amidships. She bears two of three deep dents in her turret and two ugly marks, one on each bow, received in her gallant encounter with the Merrimac. Altogether, she is a naval curiosity."

Sylvannus Nickerson of Yarmouth and on the gunboat Itasca witnessed something equally historic, described by the author:

"While patrolling the Mississippi River in October 1862, theItascaencountered on the east bank a herd of 1,500 head of longhorn cattle which had been brought north from Texas in one of the first of that state's famed cattle drives. When examination of the drovers' passes revealed the cattle were for the Confederate Army, the drovers went to New Orleans under arrest, the cattle to Union possession. Sailor-turned-cowpuncher Nickerson went ashore with details of me to guard the longhorns from lurking guerillas while gunboats, transports and sailors drove the whole "wild and unmanageable herd" to New Orleans in what was termed "a novel act of duty for the Navy."』

(Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Color History)
『Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Color History describes the rich history of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1827 to 1987 when it merged into CSX Corporation. The book has excellent black and white and color photographs of Baltimore and Ohio passenger trains like the National Limited and Capitol Limited and freight trains. I like the color photos of the National Limited (Cover and page 43) at Jersey City with a pair of Baltimore and Ohio E8 diesels on the front of the National Limited in April 1958. I also like the color photo of the National Limited at St. Louis Union Station sharing the platform with Gulf Mobile and Ohio's Abraham Lincoln in November 1964 on Page 99. This is an excellent book.

[...]』

As Americas first common-carrier railroad--a railroad mandated to operate for the public and for commerce--the Baltimore&Ohio set the stage for North American railway development. And as such, the railroad racked up a remarkable list of firsts--first to offer scheduled passenger service, first to experiment with steam power, and the first air-conditioned passenger cars, lightweight streamliners, high-speed passenger diesels, and "piggyback" freight services--to name just a few.

In this expanded hardcover reissue of the popular 2000 release, authors Kirk Reynolds and Dave Oroszi explore these accomplishments, and with them a significant chapter in American railway history. With an all-new collection of more than 150 photos and illustrations, the book gives a colorful account of the evolution of one of the nations most enduring railroad icons, through good times and bad. Reynolds and Oroszi follow the B&O from its infancy as a horse-powered railway in the first half of the nineteenth century to its 1987 amalgamation into the vast CSX Transportation network.

The book tells how the B&O, handicapped by its rugged route from the East Coast to the Midwest nonetheless proved second to none in serving its customers--whether on star passenger lines like the Capitol Limited and National Limited or on a freight network that included such notable offerings as "Sentinel Service" and the "Timesaver" freights. The railroads story, as it unfolds in these pages, makes for an evocative journey through 160 years of railroad history.

(Color Right From The Start)
『You can't go wrong with this book. Hilary Page is pure magic. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, this book has something for everyone! The lessons are so compleat, invaluable and inspiring...N.Williams』

(Excellent reference book.)
『As a professional watercolourist with over twenty five years of experience and an advanced understanding of colour I can tell you that this is an excellent reference book. Definitely a great tool for art instructors. Even though the writer sees it as a book for beginners I feel that the complexity of the subject will probably be overwhelming for beginners.』

(Hilary Page is a "teacher's teacher'.)
『I just finished reading this well-thought-out and completely researched watercolor book. I am still new to water colors and am challenged and frustrated by this medium. Page's chapter on the history, nomenclature, and categories of pigments was incredibly interesting and will become a permanent edition to my water color reference library. I have seen many variations of color wheels in my 35 years of teaching---her watercolor pigment wheel is based on her own palette, and includes placement of saturated, unsaturated, and neutral pigments. I slso found the chapter on optical color effects fascinating.』

(Possibly the most valuable practical guide on color)
『After reading Hilary Page's book, it occurred to me how painting classes should maybe start with lessons on color rather than charcoal drawing. Her detailed explanation of color is grouped in three main aspects: objective color (measured by instruments), optical color (perceived by eye) and practical color (working with pigments). The theoretical aspects are then proven in practical examples which are also used for demonstrating her watercolor techniques, producing some very pleasing artwork.

Details on pigments are particularly valuable. Pigment properties like clarity, tinting strength, purity, value range, degree of opacity, consistency related to the degree of sediment, wet-on-wet behavior, staining when rewetted etc. will be new to many. Knowing such details will help you prevent some strange "accidents" that can spoil your work.

Rare books on color point out the difference between the pigment-color contrasts and the light-color contrast. Hilary Page is very specific regarding these contrasts: she shows two types of color wheels and two sets of primary and complementary colors. She also explains "spectral reflectance curves" that give us an insight to understanding why printers use "balanced" primary colors.

A book on color naturally requires high quality print without any color distortion and this one doesn't fail here either.

(Indispensable!)
『I'm new to watercolor painting and suffering from the beginner's consequence of too many books and too many paints. I wish I would have bought this book first, much time and $$ would have been saved. Her suggestions for testing each tube of paint to learn unique pigment qualites, pigment colors, color theory, color schemes, primary colors, complements, and optical mixtures have proven invaluable.

The excercises included are easy to follow and serve to instill her unsaid mantra. Learn your paints learn your paints learn your paints! I've had this book for several months - still working through some of her excercises and foresee that I will continue to refer to this book many times in the future.』

(France, Race, and the Struggle for Political Freedom)
『As I write, vehicles all across France are ablaze. Since October 27, 2005, thousands of cars in suburbs and neighborhoods in various corridors of the country have been burned by predominantly young French citizens descended from North Africa and West Africa. These disgruntled youth represent a class of 'de jure' French citizens who do not consider themselves 'de facto' citizens of the French polity. Like the tragic images from Hurricane Katrina in the United States, the images from France depict a nation sharply divided along racial lines. In America, the notion of a racial state is hardly something new. The case of France, in contrast, brings to the fore the often submerged reality that the French polity purports to be "color-blind" although it in fact has deep-rooted problems of race and racism with their own complex historical and political genealogies. Observers in the post-9/11 world may attempt to initially reduce the cause of citizens enacting anti-statist civil unrest to the presence of Arab Muslims and black Africans in the nation. However, that deduction would not only be nearsighted. It would also overlook the longstanding disjunction between the dominant white French society and the daily lives of others such as Arabs, Muslims, blacks, browns, and immigrants inhabiting the high-rise ghetto projects ("cités") and laboring in a polity that many times questions whether these persons really belong there. The issue of race in France is not a novel problem. Cataloguing the root causes of unjust humanitarian practices against these second-class citizens and openly debating them, however, does present alarger quandary rarely acknowledged in the public sphere among even the most well-intentioned French liberals.

I first acquired Sue Peabody and Tyler Stovall's brilliant edited work, THE COLOR OF LIBERTY: HISTORIES OF RACE IN FRANCE (2003), when I was in the midst of an ongoing project that involves theorizing notions of political freedom emanating out of France and the French Caribbean during the Age of Revolution. After the recent riots in France, I once again picked up this text in order to think through the ways in which race and racism in France have manifested themselves uniquely while at the same time bearing in mind their integral role in sustaining what Charles Mills calls the global "racial contract" underlying the modern world system. The book serves as a mandatory read for any scholar or lay person seeking an extensive introduction into the evolving concept of race in the French past, present, and future.

The text begins with an intriguing Foreword by Fred Constant, which is followed by an Introduction by Peabody and Stovall. Peabody's "`THERE ARE NO SLAVES IN FRANCE'" and Stovall's PARIS NOIR each contributed to contemporary debates in the last decade about different aspects of French racial culture, the former in terms of race during the ancien régime and the latter regarding the African-American presence in the making of modern French life. The Introduction allows the editors to build upon their mutual expertise and outline the importance of the concept of "race" in French history. For Peabody and Stovall, the "French case thus providesan excellent reference for all those interested in developing a transnational, global perspective on the history of race." The contributors to their volume provide a fascinating array of viewpoints in response to the editors' thematic agenda. These viewpoints occur in four distinct sections: (1)"Race: The Evolution of an Idea"; (2) "Representations of the Other"; (3) "Colonial and Global Perspectives"; and (4) "Race and the Postcolonial City."

Among the list of rising and established authors contributing to the collection include John Garrigus, Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall, Laurent Dubois, Patricia Lorcin, Leora Auslander, Thomas Holt, Dennis McEnnerney, Gary Wilder, and Alice Conklin. Though there is not enough space for me to summarize all the authors' arguments, I wish to note that each essay addresses in their own manner the French idea of color-blindness and the positions of those who wish to push aside discussions of race in France under the myopic rubric of non-race conscious universal cosmopolitan principles. The riots in contemporary France, like the upheavals in the eighteenth-century Francophone world, point to the reality that avoiding discourse on race in France might ultimately lead to civil unrest and potentially revolution. Confronting race and racism does not mean reifying a static conception of racial identities. It simply means taking seriously the claim that race matters. In closing, if you are truly committed to political freedom and to combating the adverse effects of race and racism, then I strongly urge you the reader to purchase THE COLOR OF LIBERTY.

『France has long defined itself as a color-blind nation where racial bias has no place. Even today, the French universal curriculum for secondary students makes no mention of race or slavery, and many French scholars still resist addressing racial questions. Yet, as this groundbreaking volume shows, color and other racial markers have been major factors in French national life for more than three hundred years. The sixteen essays inThe Color of Libertyoffer a wealth of innovative research on the neglected history of race in France, ranging from the early modern period to the present.

The Color of Libertyaddresses four major themes: the evolution of race as an idea in France; representations of "the other" in French literature, art, government, and trade; the international dimensions of French racial thinking, particularly in relation to colonialism; and the impact of racial differences on the shaping of the modern French city. The many permutations of race in French history—as assigned identity, consumer product icon, scientific discourse, philosophical problem, by-product of migration, or tool in empire building—here receive nuanced treatments confronting the malleability of ideas about race and the uses to which they have been put.

(One of the best general frog books available.)
『This book (hardcover) has a beautiful lay out, well written text (nice letter type !) and especially the stunning photography!
This together makes it in my view one of the best (general) frog books on the market today.
Please do note the word "general", the information is targeted at anyone with an interest in frogs in general, a broad audience.
Which should work fine in this case.

(Great for Understanding and for Teachers)
『I teach 6th grade and have this in my science reading corner. My students enjoy the book, and it is written close to their grade level; however the book is enjoyble to me as an adult and nature lover as well. It begins by a thoughrough introduction to frogs and amphibians. The book then delves into frog classification. The photos and diagrams are plentiful with many phottos of rare and unusual frogs.』

(Frogs and more beautiful frogs)
『If you are into frogs like me, you'll enjoy this book very much. Excellent pictures, great narrative and a wealth of information about these incredible creatures. Too bad, humans are destroying their habitats in the jungles. The other book about frogs with a lot more pictures is "Frogs" by David Badger. This is also a winner!』
With richly colorful photos and compelling, informative descriptions, John and Deborah Behler have carefully crafted a wonderful tribute to the amazingly complex frog. With decades of expertise in conservation, the Behlers are unequaled in their ability to capture the wild and ever-changing world of these amphibians—all 5,000 species. They reveal an unexpected diversity of form, lifestyle, and ecology, and take readers on a magical journey that makes vibrantly clear why these creatures are so important. Breathtaking and brilliant images show tadpoles in water and on leaves; a many-hued variety of frogs (bright blue, golden yellow and black, red and turquoise) in their environment; African sand frogs and chirping frogs; Oriental fire-bellied frogs; and tiny three-toed toadlets—among the smallest that exist. It’s a vision not to be missed.

(Helpful study tool)
『My professor had recommended this text, though did not require it for her histo class. I found it extremely helpful in studying for lab exams outside of class, but it wasn't very helpful in learning about cell types that we hadn't discussed in lecture first. An overall helpful study tool.』

(Great Atlas)
『I'm a med student and found this atlas to be a great source for studying for the my class exams. The pictures are great and it makes the facts easier to learn. Squamous cell epithelium never looked so good. I also used the following:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me with test preparation because it showed me what to focus on and the type of questions that were asked on my tests. I highly recommend both books.』

(This is an excellent atlas.)
『I found the color atlas to be extremely helpful. The images are very clear and structures are labeled. It's a useful guide for medical students new to histology.』

(It is a the name says just an atlas)
『You need to know from other sources to understand the pictures.
Quality of the paper and pictures are good but unfortunately there is hardly any explanation what they are, what the functions are. It is not just because they run out of space, one side of the page is generally empty. I guess it is the concept that needs to be changed. Yes pictures are worth tousands of words but it would be much nices with some talk.Book is divided into systems. Book is also missing a short introduction that could have been very helpful.』

(Best Atlas Available)
『I've done a lot of searching into histo atlases. This one has the best photographs of all I saw. They are untouched by artwork like other atlases. They are the real thing, which I think is important for future practice with the microscope. There are two problems with this atlas. First, although the photographs are organized quite logically, there is no boldface title above each one. It is annoying when you are browsing the book. I remedied this by writing in my own titles, but it would be SO much nicer. The second thing is there is no histological information contained with the photos. There are only small description boxes next to each. Unfortunately to my knowledge there is no such thing as a histology atlas that has high-yield histo information included. I think if the company who made this atlas adds high-yield info the resulting book would be used by every medical student in the country. What's ironic is there is so much white space in this atlas. It's as if the publisher intended to add in info boxes, but never got around to it. All we need are small bites of info like exists in the High-Yield series with the beautiful photos in this atlas.

If you are the publishers of this book, heed my advice and you'll make a fortune. Medical students like to have everything wrapped up in neat little packages instead of cross-references several sources. It makes studying so much easier.』
『This unique atlas includes over 475 full color photomicrographs while providing students with a readily accessible source of morphologic information for use in the identification of tissues and organs. Each photomicrograph is accompanied by explanatory captions that guide students to the key morphologic features that identify the function of the structures. The self-assessment section at the end of the book serves as a review tool for those structures that students traditionally have difficulty in identifying.』

(What I wanted and more...)
『I bought this book for the prequel to Silver Kiss but after reading it in its entirety It is obvious that all of these stories could stand on there own.』

(Color of Absence shows loss in many ways)
『I absolutely solidly recommend this anthology of short stories. All of the stories deal with loss, but different types of loss and the stories are as varied as the writers who have written them. Walter Dean Myers uses baseball for his setting, Annette Curtis Klause writes about a vampire, and "Shoofly Pie" by Naomi Shihab Nye is set in A DINER!! All of the stories are brilliantly written and selected. Anyone who has experienced loss will love these stories, but anyone who enjoys great writing will also love these stories.Avi's story about a bicycle theft is wonderful and "The Rialto" is great as well. "The Rialto" was supposed to be made into a novel, but no news yet. UNTIL THEN, Read the short story. It is fabulous. I can't believe in a collection of short stories, there is not a one that I did not care for.』

(GOOD BOOK)
『This book makes for a good read. it has theraupitc ways of dealing with death, loss, and ways of finding hope.』

(Color of Absence)
『I read the story "Summer of Love" by Annette Curtis Klause. I thought it was a really good short story. I like this story because it is funny and I think vampires are cool because they are wicked. I thought is was sad because Simon was alone until he meets a cat. Then when the cat died he was alone again.:( Other kids in my class think the story is sad, but they liked it too. :(』

(The Color Of Absence)
『This book is so moving, especially if you are somone who has just lost someone you love, like a parent or grandparent or even a pet.In a way the book lets you know that it happens to everyone and it shows it from several differnt points of view. which lets you see how other people deal with some of the same losses teens go through today. I loved this book,I hope more people enjoy this as much as i did.』
"In adolescence we feel our losses as if for the first time, with a greater depth of pain and drama than we are aware of having experienced ever before,"says James Howe in his introduction to this stunning collection of short stories in which some of today's most celebrated authors of fiction for young adults explore the many faces of loss - the common thread they share and the hope that is born through change.

『Virginia Euwer Wolff (Make Lemonade,Bat 6) sums up the essence of the 12 stories inThe Color of Absence: "One of the things that interests me most about loss is that often, while we are being swept away by losing something, we are gaining something else that totally surprises us." A dozen young adult authors look at this paradox in all its guises as it touches young lives, in this collection of short fictional pieces edited by James Howe. Two of the stories are extraordinary--Wolff's own "Chair," which dramatizes the heartbreaking descent into Alzheimer's over three visits between an old man and his great-grandson, and Annette Curtis Klause's delicate and astonishingly moving tale of a vampire who rediscovers love through the affection and death of a small cat. Knowledgeable fans of young adult literature will be intrigued by the unlikely collaboration of Jacqueline Woodson and Chris Lynch in "The Rialto," an excerpt from a novel in progress. Walter Dean Myers, Avi, Angela Johnson, Norma Fox Mazer, Naomi Shihab Nye, and other authors explore losses ranging from a stolen bicycle to a father dying of AIDS. Young readers of a variety of ages and temperaments are sure to find at least a couple of stories here to touch their hearts. (Ages 12 and older)--Patty Campbell
