『This is a book that I have already read and that I continue to refer back to often! One thing I like is that it truly has the potential to appeal to all generations. The author is honest and open about all topics and speaks to those topics from a teen's perspective, as well as an adult's.』

(Highly overrated!!!)
『I bought this book on the review of others. Holy cow! What a mistake! I could not even get throught the first chapter. I was absolutely bored. First of all, I do appreciate the authors idea of decorating for the client and not for yourself. All too often decorators and designers do what they would like to see in your home and not particularly what works with your tastes or lifestyle. That part she nailed. The exercises to get to that however are far and away too time consuming and frankly uninteresting. Now part of the reason people hire decorators/designers is because they haven't got a clue as to what they're doing and are in need of "guidance". The idea behind this book is good, I just wish the author used a different approach in conveying her message.』

(Wow, and wow again!)
『A decorating book with no pictures? What? There are a few sketches here and there, but the whole point of this book is finding out who you are, and what makes you happy. She has some great, incredibly informative activities (buy a little notebook and do them all. They are wonderful.) I've been pretty confident about my design style and what I like, but this book added so much understanding to my taste.
I just moved to a new house and am starting completely from scratch in decorating. I've been so grateful to have my binder and notebook with me to remind me what I like and what makes my heart sing.
This book is too deep and thought-provoking to just be about "decorating". I've recommended it to everyone I know.
No matter what your style, this book will help you!』

(Live what you Love)
『This was a very practical way for me to discover my blind spots when it comes to decorating and arranging my home. Denny has made lots of interesting exercises that are a lot of fun and occasionally surprising. I also liked her playful and inspiring tone throughout the book. I feel very confident and prepared to reinvent rooms that haven't been changed in many years.』

(Spiritual journey and decorating combined)
『Finally, decorating makes sense! While some decorators approach decorating piecemeal, this author takes a much broader view. The author's premise is that you must understand what you want before you start actually decorating. The book then takes you on a journey of discovery.

There are several wonderful exercises in the book, from a completely new perspective. For example, many decorators will tell you to cut out pictures of rooms you like. But what if all the rooms you like don't fit your house, or your budget? Or what if you can't find pictures of rooms you like? Denny's approach is different. She has you create a picture journal, not simply of rooms you like, but of anything you like--rooms, jewelery, scenery, clothing, etc. Then, you look through and find themes which you can then translate to, and make come alive in, your home.

Typically when I read a book with exercies, I find them burdensome or dull. These are different; they are easy and fun. Many exercises are aimed at discovering your hidden desires, likes, and needs. What's the point in designing a beautiful room if it doesn't meet your specific needs? This book helps you dig, and uncover what you want and what may have been missing in your home/life for years.

There's also a wonderful section devoted to clutter.

It's hard to believe that a decorating book can work so well for an individual. But it does. I read the book somewhat quickly then started again and did (most of) the exercies. This book is great for anyone interested in a fresh, individualized, fun approach to decorating.』

(A Fun and Easy Read)
『Do you ever look around a room in your house and think: I never liked this room; it's too ___________ (fill in the blank!). That's how I was, but I was never sure what to do about it. This book is wonderful for helping you discover the styles and atmosphere you want your room to have and then how to create it.

I love how the author emphasizes that your home should be decorated with what makes YOU happy, not what the latest trend is. She has a very straightforward approach for helping you come up with your design. Her many examples of past clients' "problems" and their solutions makes the book fun to read as well as informative. Her book never gets bogged down in technical jargon.

I highly recommend this book. My husband and I used this process in one of our rooms and we love the result; it's one of our favorite rooms in the house. We are now eagerly working on another one!』

Decorate your home so that it expresses your personality, suits your lifestyle, and nourishes your spirit.

Too many people design the interiors of their homes based on what they see in magazines, what they think will impress others, or what an interior decorator recommends. As a result, Denny Daikeler explains, they wind up with living quarters that don't suit them - in which they can never truly be happy. In this unique book, this gifted designer shows you how to design a living space that is created especially for you - a home that will become your sanctuary in the world.

Using a remarkable series of exercises she has developed working with numerous clients and her design students, Daikeler helps you to:
- Discover how your choice of a favorite household object is profoundly connected to your inner being
- Understand how a carefully thought out living space can heal you emotionally and physically
·- Learn about the support that environment can give to relationships, work, and play
- Discover your own inner blueprint and develop your personal style

An invigorating mix of feng shui andThe Artist's Way,What Color Is Your Slipcover?Introduces a soulful approach to interior design that will enable you to create a home that is at once a refuge from stress, a place to fulfill your creative and spiritual needs, and a deeply satisfying source of beauty and comfort.

(Excellent resource!)
『Excellent resource for anyone wanting to better understand the feelings and behaviors of children who have experienced early losses, and how their experiences of loss effect relationships as an adult. This is a must read for therapists who deal with children. Sandra S. Thomas, Ph.D.

(Outstanding Content!)
『Colors of Grief covers current research, strategies, and in depth analysis of how children, ages 0-25 deal with grieving and significant loss. Dr. DiCiacco provides specific suggestions for developmental stages. A neccessary book for all adults who are involved with children.』

(the colors of grief)
『The Colors of Grief: Understanding a Child's Journey Through Loss from Birth to Adulthood This book is the best! My husband and I have adopted 3 children. Parenting for everyone is challenging. For parents who have adopted children, there are many factors that go beyond the "normal" parenting responsibilities. Dr. DiCiacco's book is a great source of knowledge for me in trying to understand the "why is my child behaving like that?" What happens during a child's developmental years is so important. For an adopted child, grieving is already a part of their makeup. So to have a readable book full of knowledge that makes sense to my many questions is exciting. Our children have struggled in making good decisions and have difficulty in "connecting dots". I recommend all adoptive parents and professionals working with children to have a copy of this book to read and use as a resource. I guarantee you will be enlightened. DRM - Denver, Colorado』

(Excellent Resource)
『The Colors of Grief is an excellent resource for both parents and professionals. It is written in a clear and concise manner and offers excellent information when working with both children and adolescents. It offers therapeutic activities as well as transitional tools that are an exceptional resource. This book is a must!』

(Very good for what it covers)
『I have found this book very useful for certain points. Unfortunately the Body Acupuncture Points section only covers about 117 points and does not cover all the points I need. For example, for the Lung Channel it only includes Lu-1, Lu-5, Lu-7, Lu-9, and Lu-11. The Pericardium Channel only includes Pc-3, Pc-6, and Pc-7. The Kidney Channel covers Ki-3, Ki-6, Ki-7, and Ki-27. The drawings and pictures, as well as the information provided on these points, are very good. I like the fact that not only do they have drawings but actual human body pictures locating the points, and it does show most of the points on these pictures, even though it does not name or describe them.

Some additional points are shown in Section 3, Trigger Points, but that section is basically by muscle or section and the points come incidental to treatment and are not listed in the index so it is not easy to find them. Also the information on these points is limited to a diagram and a brief description of location so it is useful only for treating the particular trigger point. This section is the largest section in the book and covers 35 muscles or muscle groups. The information provided in this section appears to be very good.

Part 2 of the book, Ear Acupuncture, is very good and probably would rate five stars.

I would probably buy this book again because it is very good for the covered areas with useful concise information, but it is limited. If it covered more points, it would definitely be a five star book.』

(Great atlas!)
『Very good and compact reference. Outstandingly clear depiction of the points.
The only missing thing I'd like to be included is the meridian activity time-table.』

(We'd like more...)
『I brought this booklet to acupuncture school and compared it with the other Atlas of acupuncture, the other students had. We all wanted all the information that all the atlas have, on a single booklet. All the acu. pts. plus TTP, ear pts., pulses, etc. Even if the booklet becomes a book.』

(Better than Expected)
『I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It is a good combination of western and eastern viewpoints. The ear points are well illustrated, and overall, the points are described clearly and concisely. An easy to consult index allows one to look up specific issues quickly. I am a licensed massage therapist who works with Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this book is a great addition to my reference library.』

(A NICE POCKET BOOK)
『IF YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR ACUPUNCTURE POCKET BOOK YOU WILL FIND A VERY NICE ONE. WITH PRECISE ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS.
ITS POCKET SIZE IS SUPERB. IT CAN BE USED AS A QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE.
I GAVE IT FOUR STARS BECAUSE THE TITLE SAYS ACUPUNCTURE ATLAS LEADING ME TO THINK THAT IT SHOULD BE A COMPLETE ATLAS WITH ALL POINTS, BUT IT ONLY COVERS SOME POINTS,MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES.
OVERALL IT'S A NICE POCKET BOOK BUT NOT FOR BEGGINERS WHO MUST LOOK FOR A COMPLETE TEXTBOOK BEFORE BUYING THIS,』

『In this update of the 2001 English version of a pocket atlas published in German in 1999, 2005, and 2007. German physicians who practice acupuncture present a visual-didactic introduction to the major acupuncture points (Part I), auricular (ear) acupuncture points (Part II), and trigger points (Part III). The description of each point includes the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) terminology, Western anatomical nomenclature, exact location, indication, depth of needling, function in TCM, and clinical tips. Illustrations include color drawings and photographs. Many of the references are in German.』

(A unique and wonderfully inspiring book)
『Two reasons to write this review. One is to counteract, or attempt to balance, the negativity of some of the other reader's reviews. The other is to bring to notice this exceptional book. The ideas that atmosphere, air and geographic location can influence color are not novel thoughts - Dutch master painters and the Provence of Van Gogh come to mind. But to apply such theories to the architectural and interior use of color has not been explored by enough people. Donald Kaufman was first an artist - this obviously influences his perception and methods of working with paint. The book is fascinating for the way it balances ethereal ideas with practical suggestions. The power and influence of localized light is described with excellent prose as well as lovingly selected photographs. Alongside such beauty are supremely helpful suggestions for using color and light in your own environment or in the spaces you are creating for others to enjoy. I have all three of Donald Kaufman and Taffy Dahl's books. Now I await a fourth!』

(The World of Color)
『This and the two related books (Natural Palettes and the Suzanne Butterfield book on palettes based on D. Kaufman colors)should be read attentively by anyone faced with painting a room. As beautiful as some of the illustrations are, these are NOT coffee table books to browse through. They are full of practical information for painting rooms, including rooms like mine with dark woodwork, hardwood floors, uneven walls, odd-shaped and leaded glass windows, etc. For example -- balancing cool and warm, contrasting or matching color values, using hue to stand up to strong trim, using flat paint to create a soft, smooth wall surface, what to do with dark rooms (Don't paint them white -- the resulting shadows emphasize that they are dark.), the importance of mixing paint colors without using black pigment and the importance of having the full spectrum of pigments in any paint hue, the effect that the color of light in the room will have on the wall color, and much more. The room descriptions are not prescriptions for what one must do but rather examples of the many different effects that can result using fully-pigmented paint of different value, hue, contrasts, etc. under different light conditions. The Butterfield book is a fairly simple presentation. "Natural Palettes" and "Color and Light," particularly the latter book, are sophisticated illustrated explanations of the basic "rules" of light and color through some of the myriad possible results. Read these three books with attention and be rewarded with an appreciation of color and light everywhere(in every house, apartment, store, restaurant, office, etc., on the street, the highway, in the sky, city, country -- you won't be able to help it!) Read these books and you will see, know and care about color and light forever. You'll also have no problem painting your rooms.』

(Useful and Illuminating)
『Beautiful book with great practical advice about how to choose colors for your home. I've gone gaga over Donald Kaufman's paints, and, although they are expensive, they are only a fraction of the price of Martha Stewart's line for Schreuder.』

(A dismal failure)
『I love color. I love light. So, I thought I would love this book. Wrong, wrong, wrong. This book is a borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring read. It's like a bad term paper. I dare you to find one idea to take away and use in your own life. The author talks AT you, pontificates, lectures, never asks you a question or makes room for you to react. Talk about over-intellectualizing a topic and taking the fun out of design! Bleah!』

(YUK)
『THIS IS REALLY UNAPPEALING. THEY SHOULD HAVE CALLED THE BOOK "ATMOSPHERE FOR BEIGE ROOMS." IF YOU WANT A HOUSE WITH ALL THE CHARM OF "BUILDER BEIGE," THEN GO FOR IT. OTHERWISE, KEEP LOOKING FOR A REAL BOOK ON COLOR. (I HAVEN'T FOUND ONE I LIKE YET.)』
『"Human beings feel a universal attraction to light. It is the source of life-giving energy . . . and where there is light there is color."

"Color is light made visible," says Donald Kaufman," and the atmosphere of the air we breathe and the quality of the light passing through it affect how we see color." A wall painted terra cotta in Santa Fe will look very different than a wall painted terra cotta in New York. By understanding the nature of the light and atmosphere in the place where you live, paint palettes for rooms can be selected that will enhance the light and create luminous effects.

In these inspiring pages filled with breathtaking rooms, Kaufman and Dahl have visited homes in different regions of the country and explored the particularities of the light and air in each to show how colors were chosen to enhance the available light. Whether it be the veiled light of the South and Northwest, the dry air and harsh light of the desert, the misted light of northern cities, the incandescent light over water, the clear light of the mountains, or the glaring light reflected from snow, each has its own way of interacting with color indoors. The reader also learns that, just as colors change with the region, they vary with the seasons and times of day. Molecules of air, water vapor, ice crystals, nearby buildings, or the tree branches and leaves we see outside our rooms all interact with painted interiors. We come to understand that the colors on our walls need not be fixed but can reflect the subtle changes that happen outdoors.

In Kaufman and Dahl'sColor: Natural Palettes for Painted Rooms, the authors transformed forever the way we see colors in nature and in the paint on our walls. InColor and Light, they take us one step further to help us understand the role of the kinds of light we live with and how we can bring the sun's warmth and luminosity inside.』

Though he didn’t realize it at the time, David Lee began this book twenty-five years ago as he was hiking in the mountains outside Kuala Lumpur. Surrounded by the wonders of the jungle, Lee found his attention drawn to one plant in particular, a species of fern whose electric blue leaves shimmered amidst the surrounding green. The evolutionary wonder of the fern’s extravagant beauty filled Lee with awe—and set him on a career-long journey to understand everything about plant colors.

Nature’s Palette
is the fully ripened fruit of that journey—a highly illustrated, immensely entertaining exploration of the science of plant color. Beginning with potent reminders of how deeply interwoven plant colors are with human life and culture—from the shifting hues that told early humans when fruits and vegetables were edible to the indigo dyes that signified royalty for later generations—Lee moves easily through details of pigments, the evolution of color perception, the nature of light, and dozens of other topics. Through a narrative peppered with anecdotes of a life spent pursuing botanical knowledge around the world, he reveals the profound ways that efforts to understand and exploit plant color have influenced every sphere of human life, from organic chemistry to Renaissance painting to the highly lucrative orchid trade.

Lavishly illustrated and packed with remarkable details sure to delight gardeners and naturalists alike,Nature’s Palettewill enchant anyone who’s ever wondered about red roses and blue violets—or green thumbs.

(Contemporary take on Huckleberry Finn with a few flaws)
『I'm sure Winer had various influences when writing this novel, but it strikes me as a contemporary reworking of Huckleberry Finn. Like Huck, Conrad Clay has a broken home and alcoholic father, resists the conformity of school and organized religion, and tells "whoppers" sometimes but is essentially good at heart, with the gift of feeling sympathy for others. Most importantly, he has a real connection to African-American culture; in fact, one wonders if Winer wrote this novel in light of the discovery that Twain may have modeled Huck's speech on that of black children. Conrad is able to move between cultural worlds and draws emotional sustenance from a nearby black family (in this, Winer reverses stereotypes, as it's the white family that is dysfunctional). The strengths of this novel, then, are its dialogue (the various speech-patterns of the East Bay, CA community) and a well-developed moral viewpoint. Regarding this latter strength, Jane Smiley, Wendell Berry, and others have argued that Twain's major fault was an individualistic desire to escape from community, instead of responsibly attempting to solve social problems. Generally speaking, there will be no "lighting out for the territory" for the young narrator, and without giving away the plot, I'll just say that the novel is a bildungsroman that involves Conrad's growing awareness of, and sympathy for, the problems of others in the community.

That said, the novel has some flaws that keep me from recommending it without reservation. I think Winer over-idealizes childhood and the black community at times. Sometimes the childish, innocent things Conrad does are a little cloying, too "TV Movie of the Week." Meanwhile, his surrogate family is very multicultural-for example, it includes a [...] couple-and it felt, as much as I hate to use this term, a little "politically correct." To the extent that Winer endorses a "Well, we may not make much money, but we get by for all that" viewpoint, he can be said to minimize the very real and serious effects of economic inequality upon black families. Most seriously, in my view, Winer never really figured out just how old Conrad was. We often get physical descriptions and accounts of events that sound like they're coming from a much older person. For example, in the opening pages the narrator says "Streetdust soaked up oilspots under buzzing telephone lines, which sagged low and heavy from too many people talking through them." This is a clever description, but I'm just not sure a fifth-grader, even a genius poet in the making, would use figurative language in that way. This fluctuation in Conrad's mental age sometimes causes a discordance in the plot. There's one point, for example (I'll try to phrase this ambiguously, but if you're worried about spoilers, you might want to stop reading here) where it's clearly indicated that Conrad (a) knows what adultery is and (b) takes a certain physical object in a neighbor's house as an indicator of whether or not adultery is happening in his own environment. Yet later in the book, Conrad suddenly seems blissfully ignorant, and when there's a confrontation, Conrad is trying hard to figure it all out: "I still wasn't sure exactly what was going on," he thinks. Now, this is a time when an author should *show*, not *tell*: if Conrad really is too young to know what's going on, that should be apparent in the way Winer narrates the story through Conrad's perspective. If Winer has to actually make his character think, "I still wasn't sure exactly what was going on," that betrays a certain insecurity on Winer's part as to the mental age of his character. This problem wasn't big enough to keep me from enjoying the book, but I didn't believe in Conrad quite as fully as I believe in the reality of Huck Finn.

In sum, this book is well worth ordering through Amazon because of its sharp dialogue, vivid rendering of a community, and clear moral perspective. However, I also think that Winer's next novel will be much better.』

(A Moving Modern Coming of Age Novel)
『I met the author of this novel, who spent much time in New York City, and writes with the passion of experience and the knowledge of life in the streets. The hero of this novel is a young white man living in a primarily black community in a shipyard town near San Francisco. He goes from foster home to foster home and attends Christian churches attended by blacks. While its about identity, its also about friendship (he befriends a blind man who draws a new color thats symbolic of the soul). It's also about tolerance, humanity and a boy's journey into manhood. It's a modern coming of age novel. It's well-written and soulful. Dickens, while not in an obvious way, directly influenced some of the characteristics- the waif who is taken in by a "family" and taught good values. The book is very modern and contains language that is very realistic and down-to-earth, like its tone. I look forward to a sequel if it is ever written.』

(A good read)
『This book is interesting and a good read. Characters in the book are well developed throughout the story and create a sense of reality for the reader. I would highly recommend those who read this book to read the whole book at once so they don't forget important details throughout the story and grasp the full meaning of this book.』

(Good book)
『I enjoyed this book. It reminded me of some aspects of my own childhood (parents not getting along, father getting drunk and swearing, feeling alone in the world, unhappy about family life). At first I thought it was a bit slow but then it picked up (not too far into it) and never lost my attention after that. The author keeps an even pace between hardship and humor so one does not get depressed reading the book. The part I remember the most (and still gives me a chuckle) is when Conrad is in church (forced to go my his mother who does not attend with him). Apparently the church choir is predominately white (if not all white) and a black church choir comes to visit. Conrad is bored and not very interesetd in the strained singing of the white church choir but when the black church choir comes in with their own unique way it makes Conrad sit up and pay attention and he thinks to himself "We have a situation!" If you didn't get a chuckle out of that you'll have to read the book and see how the author described it. It is poignant.

I recommend this book. It is an easy and relativly fast read. I loaned it to my 15-year-old nephew. He has to do several book reports for school and needs something that he can read that isn't too long. I felt this was a good balance between not too long but would also hold his attention and be a pleasure to read.』

(Innocence and Truth)
『Conrad Clay, the ten-year-old protagonist of "The Color Midnight Made" is the center of his own universe...one that's slowly but inexorably going to pieces. Growing up white in a predominantly black area of San Francisco isn't easy--but "Con" is adaptable and trusting. Perhaps too trusting. As he watches his family crumble, and his relationship with his best buddy "Loop" (a derivative of "Froot Loops")grow distant, Con moves through the world like a lost soul.

Andrew Winer has created a character in Conrad equal to Holden Caulfield--a rebellious, naive and innocent young man searching for truth. "The Color Midnight Made" is darkly poetic, moving, and wonderfully told. This is a story that stays in your mind long after you've finished reading it.』
『This critically acclaimed debut is a modernHuckleberry Finn, a heartrending tale of wit and grace that charts the coming of age of a color-blind white boy struggling to find meaning in a world divided by poverty and race.

One of the most memorable characters in recent fiction, Conrad Clay is just beginning life. Yet all around him things are ending: His parents' marriage is crumbling, his father loses his job during the closing of the Alameda naval base, his family faces eviction from their house, and his beloved grandmother is dying.

As betrayal and poverty take their toll, Conrad's efforts to create a new family for himself lead us on a journey alternately hilarious and desolating. Filled with tenderness and a cast of unforgettable characters,The Color Midnight Madeis at heart a profound portrait of America.』

When Americans are asked what concerns them most about the direction of the country, crime and racial tensions invariably figure prominently in the answer. In the minds of many, these two problems are inextricably linked. Yet opinions and beliefs about race and crime are often informed as much by myth and preconception as by fact and reality.

In this important book, Katheryn K. Russell surveys the landscape of American crime and identifies some of the country's most significant racial pathologies. Why do Black and White Americans perceive police actions so differently? Is White fear of Black crime justified? Do African Americans really "protect their own"? Should they?

Perhaps the most explosive and troublesome phenomenon at the nexus of race and crime is the racial hoax--a contemporary version of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Examining both White-on-Black hoaxes such as Susan Smith's and Charles Stuart's claims that Black men were responsible for crimes they themselves committed, and Black-on-White hoaxes such as the Tawana Brawley episode, Russell illustrates the formidable and lasting damage that occurs when racial stereotypes are manipulated and exploited for personal advantage. She shows us how such hoaxes have disastrous consequences and compellingly argues for harsher punishments for offenders.

Stressing that journalists, scholars, and policymakers alike have an ethical imperative to disregard and refute inflammatory or wrong-headed work on race,The Color of Crimeis a lucid and forceful book, impossible to ignore.

(A Best Buy)
『I am more than satisfied after I received the book and actually took a read. The book is well made and organized, containing super rich content in a compact size. I also found those photos in good quality.
Along with the book you also get the access to the Student Consult online which I think still needs improvement. The software took a lot of time to synchronize with my PDA and it generates many un-coded letters.
But anyhow, this book itself is worth the price. A must read for new dermatologists.』

『I bought this book a month ago, read it thoroughly and find it quite intersting and informative. It is different from the books usually written on dermatology. All questions asked are very common, informative and the one which are usually asked in the ward rounds and clinical meetings.
