(A most entertaining dissertation)
『I finished this over Thanksgiving. My mom flipped through it, as did several other family members, asking was it a dissertation. I did not think that it was, but discovered my error in the Acknowledgements. I have a special affection for scholarly works that are compelling reading. The genius of non-fiction is a story that would not be believable if made up.

Leslie documents every assertion, and includes transcripts of interviews and court proceedings so that there can be little question of context. The intermittent inclusion of belabored detail is a little odd to the casual reader, but there is often a gem in a table or list which helps transport the reader back over a 100 years (a list of schools in Augusta includes the only public one for blacks in the state - and that segregated, of course).

The story itself is stunning (grown plantation owner forcibly rapes 13 year old slave girl before her first period, "getting" upon her a b*stard half breed upon whom he dotes all his life and to whom he leaves all that he has, making her the richest "colored" woman in America), but aside from the drama which unfolds chronologically in such a way that without device one is compelled to keep reading, one is almost by the way exposed to an entire sub-culture of "people of color" whose character, enterprise, integrity, ability, and or good fortune prevailed against all odds to create a world of privilege, the survival of which depended in part upon being invisible to less affluent whites. One of them married the grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence!

Leslie presents the product of research of a phenomenon without mediated moralizing. Nor does the author speculate upon motive beyond presenting the range of possibilities. This volume belongs on your shelf next to Thurmond's Freedom, Meyer's The Children of Pride, and Reese's The Clamorous Malcontents, especially if you are a Georgian.

2 minutes a day transforms your Daily Colors into Personal Triumphs.

Color is energy. Energy is the movement of life.  Everything is "color coded."Discover how the endless supply of color around you transforms your life:

In Seconds:Turn stress into calm with the consistency of light passing through a prism refracting into a rainbow.

Each Week:Enhance&balance your most important qualities of being human and grow your spirit through the colored light of The Creator

Forever:Transform sabotaging behavioral patterns into long-term and unlimited potential.

Each of the seven rainbow colors is linked with a day of the week. Each color has attributes that support personal development to maximize life potential. Red, Orange, and Yellow support physical&confidence-building objectives. Blue and Indigo develop mental qualities and insight. Violet deepens spirituality and Green is the love connection to all human aspirations.

Part 1: ColorAlchemy

ColorAlchemy Quick Start:The simplicity of ColorAlchemy. Discover the benefits of ColorAlchemy along with how and why it works. Start right now with a two-minute Color Breathing exercise.

Living ColorAlchemy:This play on words refers toYOU Living ColorAlchemyas well as the physical and quantum science of living color. This fascinating chapter describes how ColorAlchemy s effectiveness is consistent and duplicatable. Through understanding how rainbows are created from white light, the vibrations of color, and how color is the source of creation, the reader is inspired to Live ColorAlchemy.

Mental ColorAlchemy:The mind is the key to personal development. Periodically pause your day with brief colorful moments to change negative behavioral patterns into those that are positive.

Body ColorAlchemy:The colors of the rainbow exist within the body. Colors of the seven energy centers in the body, known as the Chakra and auric field, are the same spectral colors. Starting with Red, the slowest-color vibration, the root or lowest Chakra has the same energetic, physical attributes as Monday and the color red. Following the spectral sequence, each Chakra climbs the vibrational ladder up the body ending with the Violet energies of Sunday, with its highest, spiritual-color vibration at the Crown Chakra. Integrate the colorful energies of your body to deepen ColorAlchemy.

Spiritual ColorAlchemy:Does God live somewhere over the rainbow? Universal spiritual traditions refer to The Light as The Creator. Because the spectral colors come from The Light, when each color is absorbed every day, by the end of the week, you also receive and align with the colors of God.

Part 2: The Daily Triumphs

All of the 28 days of Triumphs provide fast, enjoyable, and life-enhancing ways to Live ColorAlchemy.

The four weeks of Triumphs are Colors of Your Body, Colors of Your Mind, and Colors of Your Spirit.

ColorAlchemy Activatorsinclude color breathing, visualization, journaling, healing hands, blessing your body, color-ray healing, diagnosing auras, ColorAlchemy on the body, in the body, and around the body, working with frozen light: gemstones, working with liquid light: essential oils, making vision collages, drawing mandalas, color toning, making ColorAlchemy elixirs&bathing, chakra dance&moving meditations, ColorAlchemy music&chanting, healing core issues, astrology, numerology&dreams, ColorAlchemy fire, new moon, candle rituals, ColorAlchemy meditations, affirmations, initiations, and much, much more!

(Am I a color too?)
『Wonderful books for my two grand children. They both loved the book and it helped them to understand their own lives. Thanks from Bonnie, Jabez and Janayah.』

(Excellent.)
『This story points out the confusion of a child who was born from two people of different races. By some of the people who know them, this child's mother is described as being white while his dad is described as being black, and therein lies the problem. When the child looks at himself, he doesn't know exactly WHAT he is. There just doesn't seem to be a word for his color, and color must be the most important thing since that is all he has heard about his parents. The whole problem here seems to be that people who know them don't describe his parents as kind, smart, caring, loving, etc. They choose to take note of ONLY their color, leaving the child in a sort of nothingness since there isn't a color that fits him - although there is SO much more than color to take note of in any person.

***** To me, Am I a Color Too points out that we should all strive to be absolutely colorblind and that we should resist putting color labels on people. Why? Because all people are human beings, and they should be judged ONLY by their deeds.

I hope that this beautifully illustrated book will help to teach the oneness of all people to parents everywhere. If that happens, the parents can then teach the wonderful concept of being colorblind to their children, thereby stopping the cycle of only seeing and describing people by what their color is on the outside.

This is a wonderful book to enjoy with your child. It is a moving and poignant story that could possibly affect change for a whole generation. Wouldn't that be awesome? *****

(GREAT SUBJECT!!!)
『Everyone should read this to their children. It should definitely open up the lines for communication.』

(Educational and beautifully written)
『Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (8/06)

A young boy questions why people look first at another's color rather than the important aspects of being human. This "Christopher Award" winning book is educational and beautifully written. The verse is light and cheerful. The illustrations are beautifully done. "Am I A Color Too?" is a question many children must ask themselves. They hear one person called black and another called white. They look around them and see a rainbow of people as they walk down the street. Heidi and Nancy Vogl do a wonderful job of presenting color to our children

"When I think of all the people,
All those faces in my sight,
If people are really colors,
They must be more than
Black or white."

People are more than black and white, as this book successfully points out, they dance in color and they smile in color. This book should inspire us to look at each other as humans and to cherish those things that make us special.

I recommend this book for young children. It has a delightful message that they will learn from. If we all looked at each other without seeing color we would love each other for who we are.

(more than skin deep!)
『Rebeccasreads highly recommends AM I A COLOR TOO? as a big picture book, superbly illustrated by Gerald Purnell, on a touchy subject: how to explain the "race" of children borne of "mixed" parentage, when "Other" seems so dismissive.

Here, young Tyler wonders why we focus on the color of our skin rather than the person inside. Through his eyes we explore the common labels of Black&White,&if we come in, see, smile, sing, dance in all colors of the rainbow, why do we separate people, like shoe boxes, into only two?』

『A young interracial boy wonders why people are labeled by the color of their skin. Seeing that people dream, feel, sing, smile and dance, regardless of their color, he asks, "Am I a color, too? When I think of all the people, All those faces in my sight, If people are really colors, There should be more than black and white." Gerald Purnell's captivating art brings this simple poem vibrantly to life.』

(Fascinating, educational and an excellence reference)
『This book, by one of the leading scientists on the subject, introduces the relatively recent domain of color appearance. That is, the study of the *subjective* appearance of colors, depending on their surrounding, background, context, etc. The emphasis is thus on the various effects which affect our perception of colors (light intensity, background, simultaneous contrast, etc.) and their modeling.

A must have for all those working with colors. The presentation is very educational, the visual illusions are fascinating, it is both a pleasure to read and an excellent reference to consult on the subject.

It introduces human vision and the perception of colors, the field of psychophysics and its methods, colorimetry (the objective study of physical colors), and the rest of the book is dedicated to color appearance itself. Important terminologies are discussed (e.g. the crucial difference between luminosity, brightness and lightness), then color systems (Munsel, etc.), then the various effects which affect the appearance of colors, viewing conditions, chromatic adaptation, perceptually uniform color spaces, and analytical color appearance models. Different models are reviewed and compared (Hunt, Nayatani, RLAB, preversion of CIECAM). Finally applications and device-independent imaging are described.

Note that this book is not a book on colorimetry (see Wyszecki and Stiles) nor a book on color reproduction (see Hunt), but a book on the subjective appearance of colors.』
『There is an ever-increasing demand for a standard way to transport colours among devices on the Internet, and for achieving colour fidelity across digital media. The rapid growth in colour imaging technology has led to the emergence of colour management systems. These systems require colour appearance models so that images produced in one medium and viewed in a particular environment, may be reproduced in a second medium and viewed under different conditions.

The eagerly anticipated second edition ofColour Appearance Modelsbrings the fundamental issues and current solutions in the area of colour appearance modelling together in a single place for those needing to solve practical problems or looking for background for ongoing research projects. This book provides the relevant information for an updated review of colour appearance and provide details of many of the most widely used models to date, for example, Nayatani et al., Hunt, and RLAB and the ATD and LLAB appearance models that are of increasing interest for some applications. It also includes the recently formulated CIECAM02 model that represents a significant improvement of CIECAM97S and is the best possible model based on current knowledge. Fairchild presents an updated overview of device-independent colour imaging and finally introduces the concept of image appearance modelling as a potential future direction for colour appearance modelling research.

A website accompanies this text that lists developments, publications and calculations related to the material in this book.』

(Outstanding book on Color for all Kinds of Artists)
『There are lots of books about color, but few include information directly pertinent to stitchers as well as to painters.

Needlepointers will be familiar with Feisner as the author of Needlepoint and Beyond, an incredibly creative book from the late 70's. She is also the founder of the EGA Master Craftsman in Color program.

The book is divided into four parts: Color Foundations, Dimensions of Color, Color in Compositions and The Influence of Color. Color Foundations cover the basics of color perception, color theorists, color mixing, and the different color wheels. Dimensions of Color covers the different aspects of color (hue, value, intensity, etc.). The section on color in composition discussed color in relation to different elements in designing a piece. Two wonderful chapters cover color interactions and the effects of illumination on color. The final section looks at the influence of color in two different ways. The first chapter covers color symbolism (religious and otherwise) and the second chapter looks at the use of color in fine and applied arts.

Each chapter is lavishly illustrated with great works of art as well as color studies done by students in Feisner's classes at Montclair State University. There are also diagrams illustrating many of the principles discussed in the test. Several of the diagrams take the same composition and color them in slightly different ways, so it is immediately apparent what a particular technique (like adding a shadow) can do for a piece.

There are also tables in the book which highlight particular techniques of use to artists of all kinds. One in the this section, lets you know how to make "metallic" shades without using metallic colors. Technical concepts are explained clearly and simply, but it's easy to move to other books which cover these concepts in more depth.

Each chapter ends with a number of exercises covering the topics of the chapter. I really liked that the exercises don't assume that you will be mixing colors in paint, but leave the choice of media up to the student.

The appendices of the book are a wealth of information. Appendix 4 is the most useful for stitchers. It matches various art media colors to Color-Aid papers, the standard color tool for most artists. Not only does she list several different types and brands of paints, she also lists the matches for seven kinds of thread (DMC and Anchor floss, Paternayan, Appleton and Medici wool, DMC Rayon floss and Au Ver a Soie silk. This listing is so useful that I ran out and bought the range of colors in Anchor floss and will be using them for all my exercises for the book.

Have you ever had the problem where you really wanted something to show up against a background, but it doesn't? A final appendix, lists color legibility rankings, listing background and lettering colors. By looking for your background color, say blue, you can find that the most legible (distinct) color for lettering (or in our case the foreground) is white, the least legible of the choices is orange with yellow in the middle.

In the past I have often been frustrated with commercially available books on color. They have often been written poorly, emphasized mixing paints, and gotten too technical too quickly. If you combined this book with Mary Shipp's Color for Needlework, you would have enough information to make you a color expert.』

『This expanded new edition introduces students in all the visual arts to color theory, the
physiology and psychology of color perception, and the physics of color. It also offers tips
for putting that knowledge into practice in a variety of media, from painting and other fine
arts to interior design, architecture, fashion design, ceramics, textile design, and needlework.
Four dimensions of color hue, value, intensity, and temperature are discussed
in detail.』

(A beautiful and informative book)
『I took Susan Neider's wonderful Color Country on our family's recent trip out west. We had never been there before, and traveling with Ms. Neider's book was like having our own personal tour guide. She tells you where all the "not to be missed" spots are in each park, and even the best time to see them. Then she provides great maps that make it foolproof to get there. We were never lost even once. We particularly appreciated the scenic route she recommends for approaching Monument Valley, and the detour to Goosenecks State Park, a wonderful spot our other guidebooks didn't even mention. And there was just the right amount of information about the geology of each area to keep us informed, and so well explained that we were still interested. She gives each site a Child Rating for its interest to children, and we found these to be spot-on. For example, she rates Mesa Verde a "5" (the highest child rating), and we all loved it. And now that we're home, Color Country has become our favorite souvenir. The photos are just plain amazing. This book is worth the price just for the portfolio of photographs alone.

(Solid Information and Beautiful Photography)
『[...] Color Country provides travelers to the Colorado Plateau of Utah with essential information to get the lay of the land, a concise explanation of the geology of each park, a list of highlights, and gorgeous, honest photographs of the places covered. Dirt and gravel roads are not the focus of this touring guide; those who want more detail about backcountry travel would be advised to read an expert such as Michael Kelsey. However, even remote places like Kolob and Needles are, in fact, mentioned in the copy I bought. For the traveler looking for a superb overview, this book cuts to the quick and captures the essence of each park with finely-conceived text and images. Rating this book with one star is like buying a Brooks Brothers suit and then complaining because it didn't hold up when you went rock climbing in it.

『Susan Neider's Guide to the Colorado Plateau gets it exactly right. Read this book - or even just look at it - and you are itching to get on the road! The stunning pictures tell you where you'd love to go and the logical and readable maps and the clever photo icons show you just how to do it. After you make your travel reservations, go back and really read the book. The pictures will reward much careful looking and the literate, informative text is filled with useful and unusual details on the history and geology of the region. This book informs without clutter or preachy wordiness. And when you are finished with your trip, you'll have an unbeatable souvenir - though it is likely to be worn out! No matter, you will likely, like me, log on and buy another! The price is right, too, it won't break the bank. This book is an excellent value. Great job, Ms. Neider, thanks!

(Unique and extremely well done - William Hunter)
『The best book of its kind and it delivers a remarkable balance of informative text, readable maps, and wonderful photos. This is much more than your normal guide book - it is a portfolio of why I love this place. There is a great deal of information that I haven't found anywhere else - or at least not from the same reference. I now have a copy to carry with me, and a copy to keep displayed in the house.』
A full-color guide to nineteen parks and national monuments in the vast Colorado Plateau region of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.
