It has just a little bit (a few pages) of everything from ancient Egypt to 18th century France. It will be more then helpful in helping me decide what I like. (Used one of the patterns for our house) 『We just painted our living/dining room and kitchen from one of the patterns. So from my perspective this is a excellent book since we actually made use of it!
The only thing I had trouble with is matching the authors color names to the in-store experience. Author calls one "Clotted Cream" but that was not much help with an internet search so we matched it to one we liked (Behr color 300E-2 Calm Air). Same thing with the green which the author calls "Pastel Meadow Green". We matched this to Behr 420F-4 Sagey.』
(Color and Texture Bible) 『Since this book is organized according to floor colors, it takes a little time to adjust to the point of view. The selections of fabrics and flooring would be a much better if presented in a "coffee table" size book, but in general I think the suggestions are good.』 『

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A Good Start) 『This is a worthwhile effort in an under-studied area. Surely, poor whites are among among the most abused and least understood people in the United States. Moss lets a jargon-laden, deconstructionist (and not very useful) methodology intrude on his account, and he spends a lot of time reflecting on (and dramatizing) himself (an educated black man) in the context of poor whites. The conclusion is not enlightening, and the book seems to run out of steam near the end, offering no good insights into how the gulf between the poor of all backgrounds can be brought together in their struggle for fairness and opportunity. Kudus, though, for pointing out how bourgeois white self-congratulation for racial enligtenment serves their interests rather than those of minorities.』 『
"Even though we lived a few blocks away in our neighborhood or sat a seat or two away in elementary school, a vast chasm of class and racial difference separated us from them."--From the Introduction
What is it like to be white, poor, and socially marginalized while, at the same time, surrounded by the glowing assumption of racial privilege? Kirby Moss, an African American anthropologist and journalist, goes back to his hometown in the Midwest to examine ironies of social class in the lives of poor whites. He purposely moves beyond the most stereotypical image of white poverty in the U.S.--rural Appalachian culture--to illustrate how poor whites carve out their existence within more complex cultural and social meanings of whiteness. Moss interacts with people from a variety of backgrounds over the course of his fieldwork, ranging from high school students to housewives. His research simultaneously reveals fundamental fault lines of American culture and the limits of prevailing conceptions of social order and establishes a basis for reconceptualizing the categories of color and class.
Ultimately Moss seeks to write an ethnography not only of whiteness but of blackness as well. For in struggling with the elusive question of class difference in U.S. society, Moss finds that he must also deal with the paradoxical nature of his own fragile and contested position as an unassumed privileged black man suspended in the midst of assumed white privilege.

From the Pulitzer-prize winning novel by Alice Walker, and the moving film by Steven Spielberg, has come a soul-stirring new musical and landmark Broadway hit that has critics and audiences on their feet. A musical that evokes a unique emotional response, it tracks the story of its heroine, Celie, from sexual abuse by her stepfather to physical abuse by her husband to "a roof-raising story of triumph." This gorgeously producedcompanion volume revisits what is so powerful about the show. The Color Purple: A Memory Book has the look and feel of a beautiful antique scrapbook, a keepsake for those who have experienced the musical and want to be able to experience its soaring emotions at any time, or who want to share Celie's journey with their loved ones. But it will also be a memory book of the road The Color Purple took— from Alice Walker's memories right through to the sketches for the costumes and sets, from the cast's own struggles to the entire libretto, all of which have given Celie's against-the-odds triumph new life. Revealing, poignant, and stunning, The Color Purple: A Memory Book is a must-have book for anyone moved by Celie's story.
IPhone 3G used's review (HOW THE BIBLE RELATES TO AFRICAN AMERICANS) 『This outstanding bible opened my eyes to how the Bible really relates to me, an African American woman. It affrims the presence of Africans in the Bible. It also helps to correct the distortions that were taught or told to my people for so many years. I use to believe in the Bible through blind faith, and thanks to this beautiful book,I now believe through knowledgeable faith. The Women of Color Study Bible is an excellent bible, which brakes down every book in easy to understand language and helps connect us (African Americans) to our African decents. Like never before in history, we women of color have our own bible to teach our families, the true meaning of God's word and his plan for our salvation. I leave my copy out on my coffee table, and six of my friends have already bought it, because they love my copy so much. We have formed a women of color bible study group, to discuss and learn more about God's word from this wonderful book.』
(Amazing) 『I have never had a book that is as enlightening as this. I love the Bible. We as African Americans haven't been taught about our place in biblical history, but because of the extensive research by this group, we now know. Thanks so much. Anyone that reads this Bible will certainly be blessed. Get ready!』
(Great Study/Devotional Bible) 『I recently bought this study bible and I love it! I hope that one day it will be available in some of the other translations (NIV, New Living, NASB) as well. I especially love the essays -- they are short, practical, biblically based, and tailored for the realities that many minority women face. Since many of you reading this review may not be able to physically examine this bible, I'll use the bulk of this review to describe it to you:
Each book in the bible begins with a summary and outline. In the King James Version, Jesus' words are printed in red.
Verse cross-references appear in the center column of the text. The chained cross-references are quite extensive compared to other similarly-priced bibles I have purchased.
Essays appear for each book in the bible. Essays are written by various contributors -- mostly black women who are clergy members, authors, professors, or lay ministers. Each contributor has a mini-profile in the back of the bible. Many of the contributors are renaissance women who have allowed themselves to be used by God to accomplish many things.
Essays are interspersed throughout the bible and are printed on heavy stock paper; a picture of a strip of kinte cloth appears the right edge of each essay page. This makes the essay sections easy to find. The biblical text appears to be printed on standard onion-skin paper -- this keeps the bible from being bulky.
Each essay starts with an overview of a biblical book and presents historical background. It then discusses the black presence in that book and presents life lessons that can be gleaned from various subsections. Next, it presents information about the women mentioned in that book. This is followed by written sermonettes (called "insights") that focus on a particular topic, such as "Widows -- Dependence Upon God" or "Overcoming Abuse -- the People Could Fly." The sermonettes can also be used in devotional readings.
Standard biblical maps, a concordance, and an index (listing the essays and the women of the bible) appear in the back.
I highly recommend this bible -- it is a wonderful addition to your library!

(Women of Color Study Bible) 『This bible is a very good study bible because it has real life example within the books ie geneis, exodus. Showing how the word is applied in real life and also explaining what God was teaching in the passages. Most people would not read the bible staight through because they may get bored, but the way this bibles is divided it will keep the interest of most non-bible readers. I really, really love it.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Good defence of representationalism) 『This book is a good, but not introductory defence of representationalism. Tye is one of the big upholders of this view in the philosophy of mind, among others like Dretske and Shoemaker. Seager wrote a good introduction to representationalism (theories of consicousness). This book has three parts. The first deals with the explanatory gap and the knowledge argument. Tye considers an objection to the knowledge argument but finds it inadequate, so he proposes that colorblind mary lacks certain phenomenal concepts, and that therefore naturalism rests untouched. I think the knowledge argument, although still vey popular, is open to many objections, and this one is as good as many others. Tye then dismisses explanatory gap fears as cognitive illusions, and here I also agree, although I am more inclined to David Panpineaus thoughts on the matter.
In the second section, Tye gives a quick outline of his version of representationalsim, listing the conditions necesary for a representation to be phenomenal, and then defends his theory against all kinds of objections. I see no flaws in his arguments, but remain puuzzled about some aspects of representationalism in general. For example it is not clear to me whether Tye holds that physical makeup determines pheneomenal content, but he seems not to. If so, then it is strange to note that it seems quite obvious that what does the representing is the brain, and it certainly is functionally determined by physical makeup. This is not denying externalism, which is another matter altogether. The other thing is that it is also not clear at all how exactly representationalism explains qualia in a "deeper" way than, say, higher order thought dispositional theories. To say that phenomenal content is representational content of some kind, and that the qualities are of objects and not experiences, does not explain why the qualia are the way they are, it only says that they are the way they are because thats how they are on external objects. I guess im not convinced because I simply cannot get over the intuition that experiences also have something to do with qualitative contents. Achromatosia or akinesia seems to affect experience, not merely the representation of external objects qualities, for example. Although representationalism is neturalist-friendly, it also is friendly to some anti-physicalist thesis, and this makes me unconfortable. I also cannot agree to the metaphysical possibility of zombies, for example.
The last section of the book deals with a representationalist view of color, that mainly argues for externalism, where I see no real problem, and with the existence of consciousness across the phylogenetic scale. Here one sees that Tyes PANIC theory seems to be a good enough measure for phenomenal consicousness, and I really cannot say I am troubled by the idea that many species, even insects, have some phenomenal content, given of course that this content is also scaled acording to complexity. That is, honeybees may have phenomenal content, but it must be extremely limited and uninteresting, something we would not recognize as phenomenal at all, probably.
This is a good book for someone who is not a beginner in philosophy, there is complex argumentation, but anyone would probably get the main points and find them interesting. Representationalism is relatively a conservative philosophy for the problem of consicousness, and it seems plausible and a good candidate for explaining qualia. The only reason to adopt this position over others, like plain identity theory, functionalism, biological neuturalism, or whatever, is that it can deal adequately with qualia and remain neturalistic. Time will tell wether it is this theory that will turn out to be right, but this is unlikely, considering the history of philosophy.』
『Experiences and feelings are inherently conscious states. There is something it is like to feel pain, to have an itch, to experience bright red. Philosophers call this sort of consciousness "phenomenal consciousness." Even though phenomenal consciousness seems to be a relatively primitive matter, something more widespread in nature than higher-order or reflective consciousness, it is deeply puzzling.
In 1995 Michael Tye proposed a theory of phenomenal consciousness now known as representationalism. This book is, in part, devoted to a further development of that theory along with replies to common objections. Tye's focus is broader than representationalism, however. Two prominent challenges for any reductive theory of consciousness are the explanatory gap and the knowledge argument. In part I of this book, Tye suggests that these challenges are intimately related. The best strategy for dealing with the explanatory gap, he claims, is to consider it a kind of cognitive illusion. Part II of the book is devoted to representationalism. Part III connects representationalism with two more general issues. The first is the nature of color. Tye defends a commonsense, objectivist view of color and argues that such a view is compatible with modern color science. In the final chapter, Tye addresses the question of where on the phylogenetic scale phenomenal consciousness ceases, arguing that consciousness extends beyond the realm of vertebrates to such relatively simple creatures as the honeybee.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A beautiful and informative book) 『I took Susan Neider's wonderful Color Country on our family's recent trip out west. We had never been there before, and traveling with Ms. Neider's book was like having our own personal tour guide. She tells you where all the "not to be missed" spots are in each park, and even the best time to see them. Then she provides great maps that make it foolproof to get there. We were never lost even once. We particularly appreciated the scenic route she recommends for approaching Monument Valley, and the detour to Goosenecks State Park, a wonderful spot our other guidebooks didn't even mention. And there was just the right amount of information about the geology of each area to keep us informed, and so well explained that we were still interested. She gives each site a Child Rating for its interest to children, and we found these to be spot-on. For example, she rates Mesa Verde a "5" (the highest child rating), and we all loved it. And now that we're home, Color Country has become our favorite souvenir. The photos are just plain amazing. This book is worth the price just for the portfolio of photographs alone.
』
(Solid Information and Beautiful Photography) 『[...] Color Country provides travelers to the Colorado Plateau of Utah with essential information to get the lay of the land, a concise explanation of the geology of each park, a list of highlights, and gorgeous, honest photographs of the places covered. Dirt and gravel roads are not the focus of this touring guide; those who want more detail about backcountry travel would be advised to read an expert such as Michael Kelsey. However, even remote places like Kolob and Needles are, in fact, mentioned in the copy I bought. For the traveler looking for a superb overview, this book cuts to the quick and captures the essence of each park with finely-conceived text and images. Rating this book with one star is like buying a Brooks Brothers suit and then complaining because it didn't hold up when you went rock climbing in it.

(This book gets it right) 『Susan Neider's Guide to the Colorado Plateau gets it exactly right. Read this book - or even just look at it - and you are itching to get on the road! The stunning pictures tell you where you'd love to go and the logical and readable maps and the clever photo icons show you just how to do it. After you make your travel reservations, go back and really read the book. The pictures will reward much careful looking and the literate, informative text is filled with useful and unusual details on the history and geology of the region. This book informs without clutter or preachy wordiness. And when you are finished with your trip, you'll have an unbeatable souvenir - though it is likely to be worn out! No matter, you will likely, like me, log on and buy another! The price is right, too, it won't break the bank. This book is an excellent value. Great job, Ms. Neider, thanks! 』

My mom flipped through it, as did several other family members, asking was it a dissertation. I did not think that it was, but discovered my error in the Acknowledgements. I have a special affection for scholarly works that are compelling reading. The genius of non-fiction is a story that would not be believable if made up.
Leslie documents every assertion, and includes transcripts of interviews and court proceedings so that there can be little question of context. The intermittent inclusion of belabored detail is a little odd to the casual reader, but there is often a gem in a table or list which helps transport the reader back over a 100 years (a list of schools in Augusta includes the only public one for blacks in the state - and that segregated, of course).
The story itself is stunning (grown plantation owner forcibly rapes 13 year old slave girl before her first period, "getting" upon her a b*stard half breed upon whom he dotes all his life and to whom he leaves all that he has, making her the richest "colored" woman in America), but aside from the drama which unfolds chronologically in such a way that without device one is compelled to keep reading, one is almost by the way exposed to an entire sub-culture of "people of color" whose character, enterprise, integrity, ability, and or good fortune prevailed against all odds to create a world of privilege, the survival of which depended in part upon being invisible to less affluent whites. One of them married the grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence!
Leslie presents the product of research of a phenomenon without mediated moralizing. Nor does the author speculate upon motive beyond presenting the range of possibilities. This volume belongs on your shelf next to Thurmond's Freedom, Meyer's The Children of Pride, and Reese's The Clamorous Malcontents, especially if you are a Georgian. 』
