[from the book of the back cover]』

(Now Is the Time)
『I am not afraid to look the reality of colorism in the eye and acknowledge that it does exist within the black community. It is my greatest hope and dream that someday the dark skinned black and the light skinned black will be seen as the one family in the future. I want so much to love the lightskinned sister and brother as my own reflection and not be divided from them or made to feel that one is treated better than the other, but sadly, that day is not here and this book bravely and powerfully illustrates that point to the fullest.

I am a medium brown colored woman, my mother was very dark skinned and I have witnessed the evils of skin color prejudice all my life. In most situations, it was Black Men who were prejudiced against myself and the women around me beccause of our coloring. These men felt no shame or limit in their racist intra-family prejudice and measured their entire lives by how many light skinned or white women they could attain and how light brite their children could come out. It's everywhere and anyone who denies it is both a fool and a liar.

That is why I highly recommend THE BLACKER THE BERRY by Wallace Thurman. There is no truer portrait of the self-hatred among our people than the one extolled in this book, and what makes it even sadder is that this book was written in the 1920's. So that only shows how deep this kind of evil runs.

Lately, I have become very interested in this subject and I have searched for other books that explore this subject with intelligence, honest, beauty and wisdom and I have found several that I consider to be classics on the subject of Colorism.

(1) MARITA GOLDEN'S book "Don't Play In the Sun" is definitely the most modern up to date book of the bunch. It expertly weaves the story of her life experiences in the 1960's Black Power movement with the current struggles of women like Serena Williams and India Arie to find their way in the world, even in the midst of being shunned and ignored by the black community itself. The book's analysis of the Hollywood casting system and the "Mulatto Follies" of BET and MTV is priceless.

(2) "The Bluest Eye" by TONI MORRISON is by far the most riveting and painful book that I have read on this subject of colorism. I believe that her book, more than any mother, gets to the psychological and historical root cause of the problem and exposes the mode in which we pass the problem on generation to generation. The destruction of an innocent black girl named Pecola Breedlove will leave you heartbroken and shocked as you see the bold naked truth unfold right before your eyes. You can't ignore this book, because the story being told is the one that you are all too familiar with no matter what color you are.

(3) "Flesh and the Devil" by African novelist KOLA BOOF is another deeply powerful book that examines colorism, but not out in the open. This book is unique in that it focuses on a very enchanting love story between a Black Prince and Princess and follows their reincarnations through history as they struggle to find their way back to each other. Through detailed moments in black history, both in Africa and the United States, the provocative author highlights the way that black people originally viewed their beauty and humanity and then juxtuposes it against the way they see themselves now in the modern world. The result is nothing less than devastating. I love this book so much, because the storytelling is so rich and the depth is so sweeping and grand. Anyone who loves good writing and is proud to be descended from the Black race will find themselves literally changed forever by the powerful images depicted in this very poetically moving story.

(4) "The Color Complex"--VARIOUS AUTHORS, is a very simple, straight forward analysis from a sociological point of view. Much research and statistical facts are used to illustrate that our communities are infested with these issues.

(5) "The Darkest Child" by Dolores Philips is another great novel that shows us the poor blacks who live under the poverty line ingesting these complex social hierarchies based on color and how they not only expose their children to them, but force the entire community to live by the "color code". Everybody is used to it from slavery and the system goes on and on unchallenged. In this book, Tangy Mae, the darkest of 10 children by the white-looking mother Rozelle, struggles to find her dignity and confidence in the midst of her evil light skinned mother inflicting one horrid abuse on top of the other. One thing I will say for the evil white-looking mother, Rozelle, is that she treated all of her children hiddeously and with contempt, from the whitest to the blackest. But she killed the child who was born looking like Tangy Mae and that spoke volumnes. This book is a very real metaphor for what goes on. Very real.

(Exploring the stratification process)
『Collaboratively compiled and edited by Cedric Herring (Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, University of Illinois - Chicago), Verna M. Keith (Chair of the Department of Sociology, Arizona State University), and Hayward Derrick Horton (Associate Professor of Sociology, Albany University-SUNY), Skin/Deep: How Race And Complexion Matter In The "Color-Blind" Era is a collection of informative and informative essays concerning the very real and entangled issues of race, judgement, and the question of why skin color remains a determining factor of economic success and quality of life in America today. Exploring the stratification process, cause and effect chains, emerging issues such as biracialism and color-blind racism and a great deal more, Skin/Deep is a highly recommended contribution to Contemporary Social Issues reading lists and offers a wealth of persuasively argued and deftly presented viewpoints.』
『Shattering the myth of the color-blind society, the essays in "Skin Deep" examine skin tone stratification in America, which affects relations not only among different races and ethnic groups but also among members of individual ethnicities. Written by some of the nation's leading thinkers on race and colorism, these essays ask whether skin tone differentiation is imposed upon communities of color from the outside or is an internally-driven process aided and abetted by community members themselves. They also question whether the stratification process is the same for African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. "Skin Deep" addresses such issues as the relationship between skin tone and self esteem, marital patterns, interracial relationships, socioeconomic attainment, and family racial identity and composition. The essays also grapple with emerging issues such as biracialism, color-blind racism, and 21st century notions of race.』

(Real Teen Faith in a Mean-Girl World)
『It's hard enough being a teen girl, but even harder when you've just moved cross-country and you make the cheerleading squad, knocking Miss Popularity from her long-time spot.

Reagan Mercer has problems at home as well. Her grandmother has Alzheimers, and it's up to Reagan to take care of her while her single mom works long hours.

In time, Reagan is invited into the inner circle, yet there's a steep price to pay for this mean-girl lifestyle. When a drinking party goes too far, Reagan has a choice to make - and having a new Christian friend helps.

This is the last book in Melody Carlson's amazing True Colors series, touching on topics that connect with postmodern teens, showing them the power of real faith in a tough world.

--Christian Women Online Book Buzz

(Loved Regan Mercer)
『It's tough going to a new school, with a new set of cliques to figure out, but Regan Mercer knows how it works. She and her best friend from her former school developed a clissification system for rating friends. A, B, or C, with C being another word for desperation, and Regan's never been all that desperate.

She tries out for cheerleading and beats Kendra Farnsworth, who apparently considers herself the reigning queen of Belmont High. Now Regan has real problems. Kendra isn't the kind to lose gracefully, and she sets out to make life miserable for her new enemy. Then suddenly Kendra changes and decides to be friendly, but most things carry a price tag, and this friendship is no exception. Regan has some serious choices to make.
This is my first book in Melody Carlson's True Color series, and it's a book teenage girls will love. She gets her faith message across without being preachy, and the readers guide in the back of the book can open the way to a great discussion. I strongly recommend this one.』

『So much for blending in. After moving with her mom from their hometown of Boston, Reagan Mercer is just trying to fit in at her new high school. By winning a coveted spot on the cheerleading squad, Reagan accidentally bumps popularity poster child Kendra Farnsworth from the lineup and makes a new A-list enemy. Life at home isn't much better as Reagan struggles to deal with her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. Things begin to look up after Kendra decides to play nice and make Reagan a part of her elite crew. But Reagan finds that acceptance has a steep price, as her new friends make life miserable for anyone who gets in their way. And after a tragic accident and drinking party gone too far, can Reagan still make the right choice? Melody Carlson presents the final chapter in her wildly popular TrueColors series. Filled with provocative stories and smart humor, Melody offers characters who ring true and connect with teen girls.』

(An Amazing Book!)
『I have learned so much from this book already!!! I am a pastel artist and have purchased many art books and always find things to learn and to enjoy, but this has been the best so far!!!! I have spent a few hours reading and absorbing the suggestions in this book and have seen immediate results in my work. The way to scan what you're looking at and see more colors is quite astonishing! I find that I do it constantly. It is not a "how to" in the typical sense but more a way of training your whole body to relax and take in more of what you are seeing. Try it! You'll not be disappointed. I can't wait to go back and read more....Well worth the price!』

(What a great reference book!)
『While I may never develop the "scanning for color" technique described in this book, my understanding of color and how it is manipulated by so many different factors in nature has increased substantially. Thanks for a great book.』

(I really liked this book)
『While I had difficulty connecting with Painting the Impressionist Landscape by Lois Griffel I had no difficulties zooming through this book. It is easy to understand and the concept can easily be used with acrylic. I would like to see another book by her, demonstrating the technique perhaps in 10 paintings, step by step.

(Capturing Radiant Light&Color in Oils and Soft Pastels)
『This book is excellent and very helpful. There are many tips and stages presented in a carefully thought out way. I have Susan Sarback's earlier book and this is a stellar update! She shares much of her immensely improved talent and knowledge. Although I am a beginner, I believe this to be helpful to artists of all experience. I highly recommend it.』

(A serious book)
『In my opinion this book must be compared with "Painting the impressionist landscape", from Lois Griffel; the focus of both books is the same: explaining a simple step-by-step method to paint with full-spectrum color.

In Sarback's:
-The "block studies" (painting colored wood blocks) are not so well explained. Griffel gives a lot more insight in the selection of colors, and the cloudy day example is completely missing in Sarback's.
-There are more step-by-step "real landscape" demonstrations, but they are not so well explained as in Griffel's. Just 4 pictures of preliminary states of the painting. Nevertheless the final pictures of these demonstrations are much better in Sarback's.
-There is a comparison of different color approaches to painting that is interesting: expressionist, abstract, local, etc.
-She does not explain how to select colors (which warm? which cool?) or how to compare their values. There is nothing similar to Griffel's idea of a chart for comparing values.
-She gives tips about brushstrokes or using different types of edges. These subjects are not included in Griffel's.
-Portrait and figure paintings are not covered at all. Griffel's at least shows some beautiful paintings of this kind.
-The pages are almost full of text and beautiful paintings. There are no quasi-empty pages.
-The soft pastels coverage is minimal, but oils coverage is also lacking. The book talks about general principles: do not expect low-level (paint layering, I mean) advice.

A "must have" book? I am not sure, but I think that if you follow Sarback's tips, you will paint beautiful "masterpieces". If you are a beginner consider buying Sarback's DVD "The difference a day makes". The DVD is too short (30 min or so) and a bit dissapointing, but if you want to observe the way she paints wet-on-wet, may be it is cheaper than a trip to California to attend Sarback's workshops.

"Everything was alive, pulsing with light and color."
--Susan Sarback

This is more than a how-to-paint book. It's a how-to-see book ... specifically, how to tune in to nature's glorious subtleties of light and color.

Forget complex theories. "Full-Color Seeing" is based on direct observation. It's about overcoming preconceptions and perceiving true color based on the colors that surround it, the way light hits it, time of day, season, weather conditions, and too many other factors for a mere formula to incorporate. You'll learn to see your subject--any subject--just as life truly presents it to you. This is the secret to capturing the living, breathing sense of atmosphere so celebrated in the works of the Impressionist painters.

A revision of Susan Sarbacks' illuminating Capturing Radiant Color in Oils, this book offers twelve more years of fresh insights, new paintings and expanded coverage on soft pastels. The concepts explored here have been handed down through generations of artists: Sarback was taught "Full-Color Seeing" by master painter Henry Hensche, who learned it from Charles Hawthorne, a contemporary of Claude Monet. This step-by-step approach will add greater vitality to your artwork and forever change the way you see.』

(Great text on color)
『The Art of Color describes seven innate contrasts in color, giving special significance to Simultaneous Contrast. Further, Itten describes the psychological effects of color, the analogous shapes to each color, drops the names of several color theorists which can be used for a jumping off point for further study, provides several exercises for the reader, and gives eye-opening analyses of a wide variety of paintings, from Rembrandt to Seurat to van Gogh to Mondrian.

The text is not perfect, and suffers from deficiencies stemming from the fact that color was not as well understood when Itten was developing these theories. The primary colors are described as red, yellow, blue, instead of the red, green, blue (and complements cyan, magenta, yellow) that we know today.

Another deficiency is a striking lack of several color effects described in other contemporary texts on color theory, such as the Bezold effect, vibrating colors, and the Weber-Fechner law.

Still, this text is not to be missed. It is probably the most comprehensive text on color that is not written from a purely technical standpoint.』

(This is THE premium book on color)
『As an artist who uses color in my work, this book has been invaluable. The color wheel has always been my primary reference for color combinations; however, since reading Johannes Itten book, an entirely new world of understanding and enlightenment has evolved. I love this book for how it has enriched my knowledge and passion for color.』

(The Art of Color: The Subjective Experience and Objective Rationale of Color)
『A little expensive, but well laid out and designed. On quality paper. Thoroughly recommended.』

(Eye-opener on harmony of colours)
『This book of Johannes Itten is a good example of the use of colour in the antroposofic way. He connects the different colours with moods and feelings, religious symbols and even gives it a spiritual dimension. For me it was an eye-opener on the aspect of harmony. Itten emphasizes that the eye and mind are always looking for balance, harmony in the sense of a grey-tone. If a work of art does not reflect this kind of harmony, for instance because of a distonality in the use of colours, the eye and mind get restless and agitated. But if used on purpose this aspect of colour gives a work of art a very strong impact and makes it a masterpiece.[...].』

(amazing!)
『This book might be expensive, but what do you expect for such genius. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone into color theroy. Itten is a color genius, and this book proves it.』
『In this book, the world's foremost color theorist examines two different approaches to understanding the art of color. Subjective feelings and objective color principles are described in detail and clarified by color reproductions.』

『This book is absolutely excellent if you love art nouveau. I was very very pleased with the color designs which are spot on for nouveau times. If you are interested in arts such as stenciling, tattooing, or decorating than this is a must have book.

I received this book very quickly and did not have to wait to receive it.』

(300 Art Nouveau Designs and Motifs in Full Color)
『Although this is a nice book, it did not meet my expectations. There are many art nouveau designs, most of which are printed using only two or three colors each. The designs are nice, but the way they are printed would make transferring them for use to be very difficult. If you are interested in the colors and designs of this era, it would be a good book. But if you are looking for clip art or ready-to-use designs for art projects, I would recommend purchasing something else.』

(Really Cute Book...)
『I really like this book despite some of the other reviews. No, there's no Spanish words in the book, but it doesn't bother me because I took four years of Spanish and while I don't remember much, I do remember the colors. My 18 month old daughter loves the book because she loves anything Dora related. I'm trying to teach her colors and thought a Dora book might help. It is a little bigger than most board books; it's the same size of Baby Einstein's Baby Mozart book, but she has no problems with it. I think it's a good start for learning colors.』

(Good book for young learning colors)
『My son, 2 1/2, was having a hard time with his colors and this book has really helped him. I was a little disapointed that the names for the colors were not in spanish as well as english. My daughter (4) is learning spanish and asks me how to say a color and I honestly don't know some of them and was hoping I would be able to learn too!』

(Dora is fun (for younger readers))
『This book is probably better for the 1-4 year old crowd, than the 4-8 year olds, as it primarily is about finding colors. It is more fun than the other "simple" color books that we have. If you have a little Dora fan, they will enjoy this one.

It is also a sturdy board book, easy for little hands to turn and not tear pages.』

(Good for learning colors in English!)
『I am trying to teach my children a little Spanish- and since most Dora books have Spanish, I assumed this book would have both English and Spanish words for the colors. So, I just wrote the Spanish color names into the book.』

(An O.K. Book)
『My 2 year old is a Dora fan. We nearly have every book of hers. This one is not one of our favorites. It is a larger board book that is hard to hold for small hands. And there is no spanish to learn in this one. The object of this book is to find things that are the color Dora is asking for. If you are looking for a simple colors book then this might interest you. But if you are looking for a story to teach colors, this is not the book to get.』

『Very unique and unusual and an especially good value. I've never seen books like this series before and my granddaughter loves to pull out the little pages to reveal the colors.』

『I snatched up Baby Animals, Jungle Animals and Farm Animals in an airport store as soon as I flipped through one book. These are great for 1-3 year olds. The animal set teaches toddlers to recognize different animals and learn about colors at the same time. A great gift for baby showers, although the babies probably won't really learn to interact with them until they are at least 1 years old.』

Fluffy lambs, friendly pigs, and other baby animals everywhere--they're all so cute. Look at the foal; he's a gorgeous gray. And piglet is the perfect pink.
