(Great for recognizing colors and learning to mix colors) 『This is such a cute story. SHORT with simple text and great images. The rabbit hops into various tubs of colors and even mixes a few. Cute story that keeps my kids interested. My 2 year old is learning about colors and my 4 year old finds the mixing of those colors to create new ones to be very interesting. Really has triggered their imaginations and creativity. Fun little book. It gets requested here often.』

As a graphic arts manager in an industry that lives and dies by correct color, I am blown away by what Dan shows in this book. This is not a book for photoshop beginnners, but it will make you reevauluate the way you look at any color correction in the future. This is also not necessarily a book you will read (1) time and then put away. There is so much to digest you will need to read it at least twice, and keep it at arms length any time you are working with color correction work. It is not your typical "formula" photoshop book, you will learn more than you can even thought possible. The world needs more teachers like Dan Margulis, since getting this book three weeks ago I have read nothing else, and am amazed everytime I pick it up....wow』
(A great text) 『Several members of the Brentwood (TN) Camera Club have formed an 0n-line group where we report on how we are understanding the ideas being presented.
Dan Margulis is a key "guru" in color correction and the use of curves in PhotoShop and our group just wants to understand his concepts so we can individually improve our work.
Serious stuff and requires concentration and thought. This is not a recipe book as are so many books on PhotoShop. This goes way beyond and we feel it is essential.』
(Excellence, Elegance and Precision) 『This book will give you almost everything you need to know about Color Management. Margulis is a leading expert in the field of Color Management and he is thorough in his presentation. You may find that he is a bit difficult to understand, but if you read the book twice it gets better and easier to understand.』
(Power Users Need This Book) 『In the first 20 Pages I learned new things about color and image control. This book is jammed full of information and examples. While it is not an easy read it is a must read for anyone interested in getting better results from their images. Each chapter has something new to teach you. I know I will be re-reading this book a few times to try to absorb all the information in it.』
(I wasted my money ... don't waste yours too ...) 『I bought this book on Amazon sight unseen, after reading the glowing reviews. I wish I could return it. I consider myself above beginner level at Photoshop but found this book too difficult to follow. I found Dan Margulis' style of writing utterly frustrating and a bore to read. I may have gotten more out of this book if it was written in an easier to follow style like Katrin Eismann or Lee Varis' books. I also disliked the use of CMYK throughout the book. I have read others reviews and agree with one that this book is not 'user friendly'. Another reviewer says you will need to reread this book and I agree that is probably the case, however if you are like me you will struggle to read it through once. I'm desperate for a good book on colour correction but my search continues ...』 『The commonsense, by-the-numbers approach of Professional Photoshop has shaped the workflows of a generation of Photoshop experts. This new edition, the first in nearly five years, is completely updated for the age of digital photography. It continues the book’s tradition of introducing astoundingly effective, previously unknown methods of image enhancement. The original photographs found in the book come from a variety of professional sources, and all correction exercises are on the included CD. Professional Photoshop has changed radically from edition to edition, and this time is no exception—with almost 90 percent new content and completely overhauled coverage of curves, channel blending, and sharpening.Professional Photoshop offers a full explanation of:
How curves bring out detail in the most important areas of the imagen
A comprehensive strategy for blending channels to create deeper, stronger images
The strengths and weaknesses of CMYK, LAB, and RGB, and when to use each one
The first detailed look at the Shadow/Highlight command—and even more sophis-ticated ways to enhance contrast in the lightest and darkest parts of the imagen
Sharpening strategies, in three full chapters, including the innovative hiraloam method (High Radius, Low Amount). Plus, a fiendishly effective method of merging hiraloam and conventional unsharp masking
The realities—and the politics—of preparing files for commercial offset printing and how to deal with colors that are out of the press’s gamut
What Camera Raw and similar acquisition modules can offer
Typical problems of digital captures that were not found in the age of film— and how to correct for them
IPhone 3G used's review (How to think about modeling, not how to model. Amazing book but not for everyone.) 『The single most useful book on modeling I've ever read. This is not a java design pattern book, there really isn't any java in it at all. This is less a cookbook than a book on the theory of cooking.
The central idea in this book is the 'Domain Neutral' design pattern. Read until you understand that, and then read again while you apply the idea a couple times in real life. Then you will be in awe. If you are looking for the answer to 'how do I model a shopping cart step by step' this is not the book for you. If you are a working designer who faces new domains every few days and needs a sharp utility knife in your toolkit this is it.
8 years later I'm still referring to this book occasionally and practice it's ideas constantly. I can't say that about any other technical book I own besides richie/kernighan's classic.』
(Great Concepts but ...) 『The book's UML diagrams are very necessary for understanding the book but the diagrams are illegible due to the use of miniscule font. The text of the book has a good font but half or more of the pages of the book are UML diagrams.』
(It does stand the test of time) 『This is an excellent book. It is, however, terse and has taken me a long time to get to grips with its content and language. I have had to read several of the Coad books to 'get it' but it's finally coming together. I would recommend you read it in conjunction with (or maybe after reading) "Streamlined Object Modeling" by Jill Nicola (and would love to see her do a follow-up book). To those that say there is no Java in the title: look at the CD. To be honest I think all the Coad books are good (the "Java Design" book is really good too and was my first contact with Coad's books), some are dated but still stand up. They do take a lot of the guesswork out of modelling.』
(Ignore the Java) 『Though "Java" is in the title, this book is not limited to Java, and, indeed, there are no Java code examples. Usage of UML, however is extensive. The book presents an approach to generalizing business components (modelliing patterns - referred to as archetypes) that really helps one to understand the structure and interaction of business components. I use this book as a regular reference. It includes a near-complete business component model through 12 compound components.』
(Nice concept, but too limited to havestaying power) 『I often test the utility of a book by one of two ways:
1) Did it expand my thinking?
2) Do I constantly refer to it after reading it the first time?
The seminal patterns book, Design Patterns - by Gamma et al, (also known as the GOF) passes both tests. This book does not.
I haven't had much use for this book since purchasing it in 1999. It seems Ironic, somehow, since enjoyed the Togethersoft UML refresher training I received in 2000. Together/J, supports the UML methodology, and also supports for the these models outlined in the book.
That said, it's worth borrowing a copy to see for yourself. I'd also recommend downloading the current 'whiteboard' edition from Togethersoft.
Jeff Grayson borrowed my copy when he was working on a project to improve VIANT's software development methodology with the Rosetta project.』
『Explores the importance of color and introduces the color-coding that project teams have been applying. Delivers ready-to-use Java models, and a process that integrates Java modeling into the delivery of frequent, tangible, working results. CD-ROM included.』 『Java Modeling in Color with UML--printed in color--provides four UML "archetypes" for common entities in business modeling. These have rather abstract names like themoment-interval. Each archetype is assigned a different color in UML. The book uses these four archetypes to model 61 domain-specific business components for manufacturing (including suppliers and inventory control), facilities management, sales, employees, and organizations, plus accounting and document management.
Similar in spirit to software-design patterns, these UML components are catalogued with short prose descriptions and illustrated with UML. The detail here is often impressive, though the type is necessarily small. (Fortunately, the CD-ROM contains all these diagrams--including Java source code--for use within your own designs.) The authors--all experts in UML--have done the heavy lifting here. The idea is to incorporate these components within your own projects.
Besides a catalog of expert components, this book describes the authors' Feature-Driven Development (FDD) software-design process. (While there is one UML standard, design processes still proliferate.) FDD touts good productivity with a minimum of overhead. The authors argue that it can be used productively within today's ever-shorter business cycles.
In all, this book features much more than just color-enhanced UML. It provides a foundation of UML (and Java classes on the CD-ROM) that can model most business problems. If you design with UML, you can surely benefit from this intelligent and visually savvy text.--Richard Dragan』
IPhone 3G used's review (Simply the best) 『Of the many books in my art instruction collection, I rate this one at No. 1. It has had the greatest influence on me of any lessons or books I've had. If you treat this book as a course in painting you will: 1) learn how to mix absolutely any color with dead-on accuracy, 2) get practical advice on setting up materials and aids (for example, his "spotter" to isolate colors -- simple but indispensible), and 3) become comfortable with the painting knife, which most amateur artists shy away from. Get this book and devote a few months to it. You'll never regret it.
(Note: He shows the use of oil paints. I prefer acrylics, and used them for these lessons without any problems.)』
(Worth every penny) 『Anyone serious about improving the color in their paintings should own this book. The reproductions are clear and lucious. The work is done in palette knife so the color notes are clean. It takes you step by step through several still life settings and excercises and shows how the objects were first divided into shadow and light patterns and then breaks down to the finer nuances of color. It teaches the student how to look closer and see the subtle temperature shifts of color. There are also several reproductions of completed paintings in the back that utilize the approach. Fortunately I bought it while it was still in print and cheap, but, I'd pay $60 for it if I didn't own it already.』
(Waste no more time with flaky, new age egopainting. This is it.) 『Arthur Stern, student of the legacy of that almost-lost thread that has passed through Classical art, the Renaissance masters, the Baroque masters, into Chase, Hawthorne, Henri (and his students- Bellows, Hopper, Kent, etc.), the Bay Area artists (etc.), offers up the eye-clearing humility, without BS, that is necessary to see in order to paint what Cezanne called the "ensemble".
Akin to tuning a guitar, the method reveals that the harmony of the few notes ("spots" of value/hue/chroma) must be chorded before you learn how to glue an American flag and a photocopy of the Twin Towers to your 21st Century bombast. THE FUNDAMENTAL basis for painting. A pathway, not to be viewed as a fixed style or dogmatic cul-de-sac, but a route of initiation to Beauty.
Hawthorne/Hensche purists irk me with their holier-than-thou, plein air fascism (and some of their students with how-to books should be, with Thomas Kincaid, whipped), but I DO agree that THIS IS THE DOOR TO THE WAY. Beautiful, simple truth. Reprint Stern's book before the world ends.』
(Reprint Please) 『How sad that this book is out of print. It is a wonderful book that deals with the process of isolating colors. First it starts you with a simple project and then progresses within each study exercise that you do. My gray view finder from class has now seen better days, however, I will always carry one with me and used it even to capture items for my journaling.』
(Kat Eldred) 『This book uncovers the mystery of painting. For anyone who wants to grasp the basic concepts of color in a very visual manner. A CLASSIC! If I had found this book sooner, I would not have paid so much for art instruction.』 『Artists are trained to paint what they actually see, not what they think they see. Twenty-two painting projects show how to analyze every subject as a series of distinct color areas. A final section contains beautiful paintings of various subjects.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Hypocrisy on High) 『Slowly but surely, the disparity between high blown rhetoric and stone cold reality in admissions to marquee-name colleges and universities is being exposed. Peter Schmidt stands out in this regard in "Color and Money" by his ability to reveal the hypocrisy that permeates the rarefied atmosphere of higher education.
Because affirmative action is by its very nature an emotional issue, Schmidt wisely takes great pains to lay out a clear paradigm in order to help readers distinguish between ideology and evidence. He makes a compelling case that forces them to reexamine their preexisting positions on the policy.
Not everyone will agree with Schmidt's conclusions, but no one can deny that he hasn't performed a real service at a time when so much is on the line. "Color and Money" is an important contribution to an issue that won't go away.
Walt Gardner taught for 28 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District and was a lecturer in the UCLA Graduate School of Education.
』
(Makes it's point very well) 『Despite the provocative title this book really hits home with objective facts and measurable effects, regardless of debates over motivations. It could have used more practical how-to guides for conscientious parents and students to counter this stuff. Overall however I loved it and so did my son.』 『
What is the real story behind the fight over affirmative action in college admissions? Veteran journalist Peter Schmidt reveals truths that will outrage readers and forever transform the debate. His book exposes the hidden agendas of all sides, revealing how:* The conservative opposition to affirmative action preaches equality in college admissions, yet guts programs that help poor kids get in the running.* The higher education establishment feeds lies to the federal courts and the public about the benefits of affirmative action, and attempts to squelch any talk about how selective colleges’ favoritism toward the privileged undermines professed commitments to diversity.* Affirmative action has evolved from a means of bringing about social justice into a tool colleges cynically use to sell themselves and attract corporate support.* Lower and middle class students of all races are being lost in the affirmative action struggle. The underlying premise is that affirmative action is a band aid used to hide a very deep wound that neither side of the debate has much interest in treating any time soon. The real winners in the war over college affirmative action are rich white kids, whose spot on the inside track is secure no matter which side comes out on top. The real losers are African- American, Hispanic, and Asian-American kids, who continue to have the deck stacked against them, and those worthy white kids who lack cash and connections and find their futures sacrificed by colleges for“diversity” and the almighty dollar. Unafraid to shine a harsh light on schools such as Harvard, the University of Michigan, Princeton, and the University of California, this is a startling and brave book that will inspire a national dialogue on class, race, and education.

It is very helpful for all levels of painters, and those of us who aspire to be artists. I think it is also applicable to other aspects of everyday life, such as home decorating and wardrobe coordination. I learned so much about how and why colors either work together or don't, and how to attain color harmony. It's well-organized and beautifully illustrated. And, appropriately, the color reproduction is amazing!』
(Color Is Everything) 『As an amateur artist and a gift-giver to artists, I find Bartges' book to be the answer to great dilemmas: color questions of my own and a way to look very savvy to my artist-friends! This book is to painting what "new math" was decades ago to students who never understood math -- and we can be grateful to artist-author Dan Bartges for its seeming so easy. "Color Is Everything" makes anyone with the least bit of an inkling to put color to canvas want to grab paints, palettes and brushes and head for the hills (or any other destination that is one's inspiration)!』
(Now I understand color) 『As an art lover and fledgling artist I often knew that the colors in a painting were exactly right -- or terribly wrong. This wonderful book begins by taking you to the art supply store so that you can get the simple but essential tools which start you on your way. By use of the "color wheel" it guides you in mixing colors to get exactly what you want. Then, with examples of the author's art and classical museum works, it uses the color wheel to explain why the colors are just right -- and sometimes, how to make them better.
Whether you're just beginning to dabble in painting or you've been at it for years, this book, along with the color wheel, will enhance you efforts and make painting more fun.』 『For beginners to advanced artists who have been struggling with color, this remarkable new book explains and illustrates how to truly master the use of color. It is written in a concise yet conversational manner and very easy to follow.
Author/artist Dan Bartges sums it up best: This book is designed with one purpose in mind: to show painters exactly how to master color. As a result, you will gain greater confidence, you will paint better pictures, and you will have a lot more fun painting.
The unusually high-quality book features more than 100 full-color illustrations, photographs and paintings by the author. Further, it clearly explains what great artists know about color that most painters don t and demonstrates with master works by famous artists such as Degas, Picasso, de Kooning, Sisley, Goya, Sargent and others.』

The readings are similar to other books that I have read in any 12 step recovery program, with the exception that with this disease there is no recovery, just coping.
