(Good Reference Book for Color Theory)
『Great small sized reference book for those interested or curious about color theory. The book includes hundreds of various color combinations that can be used. Some are a bit odd and don't work together. All around it is a good reference book.』

(Lost my flair . . . until these)
『After working in newspaper/magazine graphic design for nearly 18 years, I was pretty much coasting on complacency and one gigantic mess of a color pallette that I used at work and at home until I finally picked up both of these Color Indexes (the first one as part of the The Designers Complete Index (Boxed Set) ), which finally broke the monotony, expecially on recent freelance gigs (to which I've returned after a time) where I wowed 'em with the kinds of color combos I USED to create off the top of my head, but before I fell into a rut when I realized just how undiscriminating a lot of clients really are. All of Krausse's "Index" books are essential for the beginner AND the jaded veteran, but the color books are crucial in an era of tight deadlines and mass competition from every flapjack with a home computer and a paint program who suddenly decides graphic design is easy. I hope Color Index 2 will one be day added to the box set as well, right alongside it's predecessor. These books are life-savers, and should be recommended products for anyone seriously considering a career in this field, not to mention those fearing they've been in it too long! ;)』

(Color Index 2)
『This product is a jewel for all designers alike. It eliminates all some time in the theory period of designing and allows you to work.』

(Great book, but calibrate your monitor!)
『I thought the book was a little whacked until I realized my monitor was out of calibration. I used the Eye-One Display 2 Monitor Calibrator to calibrate my monitor and now I am getting colors that are VERY close to the book.

There isn't much to say about it except that is it very easy to use, very intuitive, and will have you making better color choices without having to learn one single thing about color theory. You can be completely color-theory illiterate and still make great choices using this book.

In fact, you could be writing hex code for html on a monochrome monitor, while using this book, and still get it right!

The book is split up into sections based on color. "Combination of blue hues" is the first section cluster. Within that section is "Blues + neighboring hues", "Blues + opposing hues", "Blues + neutral hues", and "Blues + black and tints of black." These section clusters continue for Reds, Violets, Orange, Yellow, and Greens. At the end you will find "Mixed combinations of Saturated Hues", "Mixed Combinations of Semi-muted Hues", "Mixed Combination of Neutrals and Muted Hues", Mixed Combination of Neutrals and Saturated Hues."

I highly recommend this book, just be sure that your monitor is calibrated before you start complaining about the book's color numbers being wrong (like I initially did.)』

(Great color book for ideas!)
『This book is really helpful when you're stuck using the same color palettes over and over. His first book was good too, but this one is grouped by colors instead of being so random. It's a small book and great to have near computer for when you need a creative boost.』
A new take on color combinations!

Color Index 2 contains hundreds of different color combinations, each with an accurate formula for both print and web use. You'll easily find the best colors for your piece with chapters organized by dominant hue, and with unique expansion palettes--sets of four related hues arranged from dark to light--that allow you to explore even more color combinations for limitless possibilities.

Designers, illustrators, photographers and fine artists alike will find this book an indispensible tool when it comes to finding color-related ideas and solutions. A companion to its best-selling predecessor, Color Index 2 offers even more colors and fresh new combinations of colors, making it easier than ever to create harmonious palettes for whatever project you're working on!』

(I wish I rote this retirement book.)
『I love the way the author has adopted a holistic approach ties and ties all of the elements together at the end. The Financial Pillars chapter is a real eye opener.』

(What Color is Your Parachute:Retirement)
『Thus book us a timely addition to my library since I just retired last week. Good practical suggestions, very readable and easy to understand. It fully met my exoectations, offering the same quality I found in the origional "Parachute" book.』

(A Reasoned Leap of Faith)
『Richard Bolles and John Nelson lead people planning reitement through an exploraation of who they are and who they want to be. Through a wholistic approach, the future retiree is given the tools to examine the main issues involved in planning retirement. How to look at one's health, finances, environment, passions and social needs are put forth. A great manual for looking at what retirement can be for you.』

(Disappointment)
『Certainly not cut from the same cloth as the original "What Color . . ." publication. Far too much time spent discussing basics so widely covered elsewhere. I had hoped that there would be more "tools" provided for relevant decision making. This was a waste of good money.』

『This book covers things you might not have considered when looking at retirement, and encourages you to think about what's important in your life. It's a good guidebook for retirement.』

(So - so instruction.)
『Not as detailed as I had thought. A little more basic, would be good for a true beginner.』

(Wonderful Book on mastering color- and colored pencil for photorealism)
『I have bought a lot of books on colored pencil art over the years, and this one is perhaps the best of them all...it is absolutely packed with color illustrations- the artwork in it blows me away- and the color information and how to build up colors in colored pencil work is first rate.

The information is vast- from supplies, to transfering, to using photos and grids, building a good composition, color and value, underpainting, reflections....and on and on. My big weakness (still) is to go in with a thick layer of the color I want to use- but the author shows us step by step how using many thin layers of different colors builds a much richer overall color and makes a much more beautiful painting in the end. There are MANY color tips- including a great chart of using greyed complements for darker values.

The illustrations in the book are fantastic- beautiful glasswork in particular. The style is all photo-realistic- I do wish a few more 'imaginary' works were included, where the end result does not look like a photo, but that is just me. I would have to say if I had to rid myself of all my CP books but one, this would be the one I would keep.』

(great technique book)
『The author provides a clear explanation of the colored pencil techniques and materials she uses to create her vibrant paintings. Very helpful to artists experienced with other media who want to master colored pencil.』

(No matter how many books you already have you need this one)
『Having a pretty large collection of drawing and colored pencil books I figured there wasn't much I would get out of this one. I was wrong. This book really took my colored pencil paintings to a new level. Like a lot of other colored pencil books, you really need to have drawing skills as this book won't teach you how to draw. What you will learn is how to make your colored pencil paintings look like paintings and not bland one dimensional drawings. This book will teach you how to bring life to your drawings with vibrant, bold color. Get this book and try one of the drawings (I did the marbles) and if you follow the directions and take your time you will be amazed at what you can create. I find myself going to this book to help guide me each time I start a new project and it hasn't let me down yet.』

(Masterful Color: Vibrant Colored Pencil Paintings Layer by Layer)
『"masterful COLOR" is well written in a clear concise format. Explanations from concept of idea to composition using the latest digital equipment as well as basic equipment needed is well taught. This is more of a "how I do it" book, rather than a broad spectrum book detailing supplies, equipment, techniques and other basics. With this in mind, Arlene Steinberg eliminates the need for lengthly explanations so you can focus on how to expediently execute a well conceived painting. A detailed summary of color theory and underpainting styles used by the Old Masters was exceptionally insightful and unique to this fine art medium. I consider this purchase a part of my foundation in learning the art of the colored pencil.』
『Colored pencil artists are gaining respect in the art world. This book approaches colored pencil work in the same manner as oil/acrylic painters work; offering instruction on how to plan and work on the entire painting at once. The result is a more cohesive, finished painting.

Rich colors are a desirable result for most artists. The techniques of creating a tonal underpainting and layering colors have been used by master artists for centuries. This book, which uses complementary colors for the underpainting, allows the contemporary colored pencil artist to tap into that tradition used by the Masters.

There is no other book that approaches color in this manner for today's artist.

Opposite or complementary colors create contrast and vibrancy. Masterful Color is loaded with instruction on how to layer colored pencil effectively to create deep, vibrant colors that exude richness. Readers will learn how to layer these complements over one another, creating rich shadows and adding depth and dimension to their paintings. With extensive coverage of basic techniques, detailed information on composition, color theory, textures and more, colored pencil artists will learn everything they need to achieve rich, vibrant colors by layering complementary colors. 17 demonstrations show readers the various techniques needed to use this approach and an extended final demonstration leads them through the entire painting process, step by step.』

(Must have)
『This book is interesting.
if you are starting to become a designer this is an introductory of colors, the meaning of them and how they can be applied.

it is nice to have it as part of your design books collection』

(Color: Messages and Meanings)
『This is an excellent resource for those who have the desire to understand how color can be used to relay powerful messages. The graphics in this book are crisp and vivid. A topic which could be daunting has been presented in a way that is easily understood and absorbed by those that currently work or wish to become more acquainted with color.』

(The Best Color Guide)
『This is a newer edition of a book we've had in our graphic design studio for several years. Even after 34 years in the business, sometimes you just need a kick in the pants to come up with a great color combo, and this book gives you countless ideas sorted by feel, emotion, application, etc. I've gotten to a point where it's as important as a software manual when we get into a jam. Buy it!』

(An excellent resource for color trends and color combinations.)
『I had the pleasure of attending the seminar: Future Color/Design Trends by Leatrice Eiseman. She addressed the major challenges in today's marketplace in satisfying consumers' more demanding perceived needs and desires in both styling and color. She told us color is the first thing a consumer considers when making a purchase, then shape, then words.

This book is an incredible resource for trendsetting color combinations for anyone making color choices. Whether your designing a new product for the home, a retailer buying at market, a graphic designer or an artist creating a new line of stationary, you will be inspired by this Pantone color resource.

Thank you Leatrice for providing this valuable color resource.』

(Duped?)
『This book is a nice little book, but it is too much like it's predecessor, Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color by the same author. I would not have bought it had I known, I assumed (like a dummy) that it was an addition to the other book, not basically a copy with a few very minor extras and a bold new cover. I have since discovered the Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color is being discontinued and no longer being printed at this time. My feeling is that the author and publishers duped the public by not simply saying this is a (slightly) updated version. If you already own the older book, don't bother purchasing this one. If you do not already have the older book, then by all means purchase this book as it is a good one for any artist and designer working with color. Shame on Leatrice Eiseman and shame on the publisher.』
『There is no one in the business world that doubts the impact of colour. Those involved in marketing, design, advertising, and retail need to be as informed as possible about the usage of colour as a means of instant communication in order to make appropriate colour decisions. This guide explains the emotional response to colour and covers the latest guidelines for effective colour combinations including the integration of colour trends. With up-to-date visuals and printing formulas to eliminate guesswork, this guide empowers and equips its users to make smart informed decisions.』

(Beginner's Van Gough)
『Several of my grandchildren have learned to love van Gough's art. This is a nice introduction and an easy reference.』

(Linking Literacy and the Arts)
『I have been an early childhood educator for over 36 years and am delighted that "Vincent's Colors" is available to my young students, ages 3-6. It is an exquisite introduction not only to the work of Vincent VanGogh but to the observation of color and art forms. In addition, the vocabulary associated with each picture links literacy to this introduction to art. Research clearly shows that the arts strengthen brain connections, particularly during the first five years of life. Every young child deserves this book in their early library!

(Love This Book!)
『This is a beautiful book and a wonderful introduction to art for young children. In addition, children who are just learning to read can read the book themselves. My kindergarten aged grandson can read most of the book and loves to talk with an adult about the art. This book links meaningfully to the Baby Van GoghBaby Van Gogh video in the Baby Einstein series.』

(Great for all ages)
『I am a teacher in a class of 2 year olds and they LOVE this book. I have to read it at least 3 times per week, in addition to the children "reading" it themselves. The pictures are so bright and the words are so simple. We have even done pictures based on their favorite painting "Starry Night". I highly recommend this book to be added to any personal or classroom collection, especially if you are promoting art.』

(vincents colors)
『Vincents Colors is a beautiful book. I purchased it for my preschool to go along with the theme of illustrators and authors. The teachers used this book as a resource to go along with that theme. The children loved looking at the pictures.』
『Vincent van Gogh is one of the world's most famous artists. Throughout his life, he wrote to his younger brother, Theo, about his colorful, dynamic paintings. This book pairs the artist's paintings with his own words.

Van Gogh's descriptions, arranged as a simple rhyme, introduce young readers to all the colors of the rainbow and beyond. The descriptive words combine with spectacular reproductions of many of the artist's most beloved and important works to create a perfect art book for young and old alike.』

(Why Do Leaves Change Color?)
『This is a question every elementary child asks their parent or teacher. Don't know the answer? Read this cute book and you will find out! A great book to teach one science concept of fall. Do leaf rubbings of leaves collected on a walk and you and your child will have a great afternoon of learning. Excellent text and pictures.』

(Explaining fall)
『I used this book this semester while student teaching with a Kinder class. The kids really loved the illustrations, and the explanation of why the leaves fall. They were fascinated with the explanation of the pigment for red, yellow, and orange already being there. I'd reccomend it with older children too, as they might enjoy the science behind it even more, and there's more opportunities to actually have them describe the leaves and observe leaves in a section the way the book shows us we can.』

(Fairly detailed book for early elementary children.)
『I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children.』
『Most children have jumped into piles of leaves or helped their parents rake the yard, and everyone has wondered: Why do leaves change color? Activities that a child can do with leaves and even a list of places known for brilliant fall colors that readers can visit with their families is included. "An informative concept book."—BL.

(One of my favorite references)
『A great color reference for any graphic artist. A variety of sample color combinations included (Pantone specific). Color choice can be a powerful psycological tool in a design. This book helps define what moods or emotions are evoked by different color palettes.』

(Great Color Reference book for every kind of designer, or even fashionista)
『This book is a beautiful, beautifully put together quick reference to color! The illustrations, to-the-point text, and the resource of pallets makes it a great starting point or cheat-sheet to using color on designs for the concious mind. It has helped me greatly on basic projects like page layout, websites, and application design. This is a must have quick reference for anyone who cares about color harmony and psychological impact or stimuli of self or one's project/product on one's audience and needs on the fly application of the same. I highly recommended.』

(A Designers Necessity)
『Let's start by saying that I've been a Graphic and Multimedia Designer for over 10 years now. Like all beginners I used to think that design was all about what ever you liked best.
Well thats worth a good chuckle these days. As an experienced designer will tell you there's a lot more to good design than personal preference.
Matter of fact it's more like a science than anything else. Once you start diving into color theory and color association you begin to realize that there's quite a lot of information to retain and that there's a right and a wrong color for everything.

Well here's your reference guide!

This book has sat on my desk for the 4+ years that I've owned it and has definitely seen better days. The pages are falling out, the cover is beat ta heck and page 63 in particular has been scanned so that I could fold it up and put it in my pocket more times then I can count.

Leatrice keeps her explanations simple and direct and reinforces them with stellar designs of well known products from top notch agencies.
She adds a large section of color palettes in the middle but they've become a bit dated since the release of this book. Some of them are still nice and will at least inspire you to play with some similar colors.

As an added bonus the back of the book has the CMYK values for all of the pantones if you're one of the cave dwellers that dont have a Pantone booklet (shame on you!).

This is not the definitive color theory hand book!
You wont become a master after reading this and there are quite a few design fundamentals that are not included.
But it is a terrific and beautiful reference that you'll find yourself digging through constantly for information and inspiration.

It belongs on your bookshelf.

Nuff said.
