(Best Garden Colour for Florida)
『Great for colour pictures, and explanations. Much better than two other books I ordered as we are planning shrubs for our new house. Only 2 downsides, we reside in Zone 9 and only a few of the plants (less than a third could be used in our area. Plus warnings of "not tried further north of zone 10" however on collective pictures later on certain plants can be used between zone 8 to 11!! Second downside alot of the best plants are refered to but information was in the previous book, which I was reluctant to get as we reside in Central Florida and it is for South Florida, so I did not expect many plants to be applicable in there for us. Ms Crawford mentions in the text she has a new book coming out which will cover the whole of Florida, which I have looked high and low for, however it appears not to be? Shame.』

(Florida gardening)
『This book has wonderful graphics and comments that are very helpful to a new Florida gardner.』

(Best Garden Color for Florida)
『It is very difficult to find a good reference gardening book for South Florida specially for the Miami area. This book along with her other book "Easy Gardens for South Florida" are a must for anyone trying to garden in South Florida. Great information on all the plants listed in the book.』

(Coloring a Florida garden.)
『This very splashy book with big type, excellent large color photos on big pages is a useful guide if you are looking to brighten up your Florida garden. Crawford provides more information about how to care for each plant than is available in most books. The format of two facing pages for each plant with the information arranged in a common format and organization makes it very easy to use.
Her carefully dealing with suggesting companion plantings and showing their combined impact in a garden is extremely useful.
There are some inconsistencies and editing errors for example on pages 122-123 Butterfly Bush, there is extensive comment about it being a better plant for North Florida and very short-lived or unsuccessful in South Florida yet she recommends it for zones 10a to 11.
Obviously her priority in plant choice in this book is color and her criteria of can she get it to perform. From my perspective I question her advocating the use of spray liquid fertilizers on nectar plants without mentioning the negative impact on butterfly catepillars of these chemicals.
I got the book as a gift--and a lovely one it was--but I have not yet become convinced to spring for the companion volume "Easy Gardens for South Florida. There are many ways in which they would make more sense together than they do seperately but I have been waiting for the new edition to come out.
Some of the plants e.g Forsythia Sage which she raves about I and the major nursuries here in Sarasota and Venice have been unable to secure.』

(Great book!)
『I've lived in Florida for five years and always wanted a lot of color in my garden. Most of my efforts failed, except for annuals which I constantly have to replace. This book introduced me to a whole new group of easy perennials that bloom a lot and last for years! And each plant description has more care information than any other book I've ever seen! This book has changed my garden from drab to gorgeous!』
『"Best Garden Color for Florida" is a must-have for Florida gardeners and professionals who love garden color! It is not only loaded with 575 spectacular photos, but also includes reams of easy-to-understand information about use and care of 150 terrific Florida plants. The plant information is complemented with chapters filled with ideas about color for butterflies, sun, shade, salt, and wind.

The book is a result of decades of plant research by the author to determine which plants and planting strategies give the most color for the least amount of care. The author personally grew most of the plants, giving her practical experience with all aspects of the plants’ use and maintenance. It is a companion to the best-selling "Easy Gardens for South Florida", which will be adapted to cover the whole state in 2004. No information is repeated in either book. The two work together to give you the best garden color for Florida.

"Best Garden Color for Florida" covers all of Florida, with special emphasis on zones 9 through 11. It gives detailed information on annuals, perennials, shrubs, vines, and flowering trees.

The book is large-format, hard-cover, reference book with top-quality binding and paper. It is designed to be a useful, long-lasting book that goes with you to the garden center and into your backyard for many years to come. "Best Garden Color for Florida" belongs on the book shelf of every Florida gardener!』

『Luscious color photos! A great book to curl up with on a gray day.』

(The Best!)
『Thank you Susan Sargent once again! Her fist book was packed with color, and this one is the same. Filled with unbelievable beautiful rooms and the information to overcome anyone's fear of color. I plan to use this with my clients and for myself. My only wish is that besides a color chip photo of the colors she uses she actually put in a tear sheet of color chips!!
An inspirational book.A must have if you are a textile designer, lover of color!』

『Susan Sargent's woven rugs, pillows, pottery and bedding are known for their bright, yet elegant, colours and patterns. She has licensed her brand name for upholstery, bed linens, furniture, window treatments, and ceramics. Sargent's products can be found in her flagship store in Manchester, Vermont, as well as in her new flagship store on Boston's Newbury Street. Her fabrics are available at over 8000 design centres, including Home Depot Expo and Jo-Ann Fabrics. Susan Sargent's The Comfort of Colour presents colour makeovers of nine home environments, from a young couple's starter home to new retirees who are downsizing from a house to an apartment. In each makeover, Sargent emphasizes finding a style that suits and reflects the owners' personalities. The hands-on presentation of the projects is inspirational and informative, illustrating how colour can completely transform the atmosphere of a home in conjunction with the owner's family treasures, antiques and personal collections, as well as how colour can influence people's emotions. Sidebars teach readers such tips as how to resist formulaic approaches, chromophobia versus chromophilia, and the power of colours on neutral backgrounds.』

(cool... but not the best I've seen)
『I was looking forward to using this with my art students, and it is a really interesting way to introduce them to art pieces. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I've seen other books provide a brief intro before each piece that talks about the artist... not this one.』

(Abstracts)
『I thought this book of abstract arts are full of lines and shapes similar to the cover but I was wrong. I forgot that different artist has different views of their abstract art. There are some pieces of abstract inside that contains only very simple shapes like circles or triangles, but it's a masterpiece already! I wonder why? but it's great to have this book... :-)』

(A Plethora Of Modern Art)
『This amazing book by Muncie Hendler is great in many ways. The primary use is obviously exposing children to some of the greatest abstract art in the history of the world in a fun and interactive way. It succeeds brilliantly in that goal, but it is actually a good way for adults (especially young adults or people new to modern art) to learn about and appreciate abstract art as well.

The book is nicely printed, and features nice (but relatively small) color images of the original works of art as well as the actual pages to be colored in black and white.

This is a great way to expose people to the joys of abstract art. I think it is a brilliant little book, and is the best of the series by Muncie Hendler.

(Great for adults, too)
『There are 30 different abstract art masterpieces represented here, so it is definitely worth the price. All pieces are shown in color on the front and back covers, and each individual page has the name of the artist (years of their birth-death), title of the work, date created and type of medium used. So, it's educational and fun. I recommend it for all ages.』
These captivating reproductions of 29 great abstract art masterpieces of the 20th century are irresistible fun for colorists of all ages. The meticulously recreated black-and-white renderings include Frank Stella'sLac Laronge III,Ad Reinhardt'sNumber 30,Helen Frankenthaler'sIndian Summer, and many more.

(In response to 'racist')
『Initially, I wanted to respond to the person who wrote 'racist' to say, that he's an ignorant idiot; particularly for his unexamined complicity in affirming the oppressive hegemony that burdens this culture and society. By attempting to silence and dismiss the marginalized voices of women of color he is only perpetuating racism, and extendedly, sexism, classism, neocolonialism, and homophobia by hiding them and pretending that they don`t exist. However, I thought that maybe his apathy is only the result of being uninformed, unexposed, and/or simply being uneducated. I mean, who has the audacity to tactlessly claim in public that "To think about racism is to be racist. [and that, therefore,] People should think about other things." This is, either written by (1) someone from a position of unearned privilege; inferred by his/her inability to find urgency with the issue; or (2) someone who simply can`t read.

Slavery's long dead dude, not the embedded institution of oppressive "-isms" that circulate and reside within this society. And I know that sometimes it's hard to accept or understand that you're an oppressor too.

Anyway, that's what I want to say. Instead, I'm going to be passive and say:

Well, there's a great distinction between being racial and being racist. A racist is someone who vilifies another person through that person's race; and/or discriminates or commits violence against another person on the basis of that person's race. When a person emphasizes race to substantiate the socio-political flesh of his/her experiences, however, I don't read it as being racist. To me it is a reflection of the reality upon which other people are situated; and how that reality is defined and determined, sometimes, on the basis of one's skin.

This book is not "racist." This is a glorious book. A necessary book. A book that must be promoted and made accessible for everyone to read. Yes, it speaks about feminism, but it expands and complicates the term to include ALL women and to acknowledge, more importantly, that race, class, and sexuality intricately intersects with gender in this global matrix of domination and in how some people define or identify themselves. It is, undeniably, for and about women (of color) but only because the particular standpoints of this collection of women profoundly reflect and articulate the relationship between the "powerful" and the "powerless;" both relative terms that constitute the LIVED reality of most everyone. And that, in itself is, in my opinion relatable and worth learning enough to read.

This book is also about consciousness, empowerment, resistance, and resilience; a possible source of validation and inspiration for those who may not have been handed any.』

(A compelling Third Wave feminist, multiracial, youth anthology)
『"Colonize This!" is a thought-provoking, important Third Wave feminist youth of color reader powerfully documenting the myriad ways that the politics of gender, race, class, sexuality and disability interesect. I strongly recommend it for activist youth engaged in coalition building and anti-oppression work, especially young, able-bodied, middle-income, white, heterosexual men.』

(Edgy Third Wave Book)
『Colonize This will make some readers uncomfortable to the contributors' honesty and in some cases anger. The various entries bring race to the center stage and this in itself will cause some readers to shift uncomfortably as they re-think their own particular privilege.

This book is ideal in a women's studies classroom or ethnic studies, english, or sociology. I think the book would be best served by also reading _This Bridge Called My Back_, since so many of the contributors refer to _Bridge_ as causing their "click" of feminism.

Colonize This isn't your typical academic tome, but a personal (and political) book that should cause some lively debate.』

(Thinking and Racism)
『To think about racism is to be thoughtful. To be thoughtful is to be engaged in the process of learning. To refuse to reflect on and examine your belief systems is to be ignorant.』

(In response to "racist")
『In response to the last reviewer, it is always interesting how the very people who perpetuate racism and the oppression of people of color are the first to denouce as 'racist' any argument against (or God forbid, anger towards) the system that keeps colored people oppressed. The previous reviewer should consider the notion that maybe these women didn't need anything but the experience of their own lives to know that the world is stacked against them as women of color. He should also wonder if his inability to believe the pain of others is a reflection of his inability to acknowledge the privledge he takes for granted. The is an excellent book, and will be an excellent read for anyone with an open mind or a capacity to listen to the feelings and ideas of others.』
It has been decades since women of color first turned feminism upside down, exposing the‘70s feminist movement as exclusive, white, and unaware of the concerns and issues of women of color from around the globe. Now a new generation of brilliant, outspoken women of color is speaking to the concerns of a new feminism, and to their place in it. Daisy Hernandez of Ms. magazine and poetBushra Rehman have collected a diverse, lively group of emerging writers who speak to their experience—to the strength and rigidity of community and religion, to borders and divisions, both internal and external—and address issues that take feminism into the twenty-first century. One writer describes herself as a “mixed brown girl, Sri-Lankan and New England mill-town white trash,” and clearly delineates the organizing differences between whites and women of color: “We do not kick ass the way the white girls do, in meetings of NOW or riot grrl. For us, it’s all about family.” A Korean-American woman struggles to create her own identity in a traditional community: “Yam-ja-neh means nice, sweet, compliant. I’ve heard it used many times by my parents’ friends who don’t know shit about me.” An Arab-American feminist deconstructs the “quaint vision” of Middle-Eastern women with which most Americans feel comfortable. This impressive array of first-person accounts adds a much-needed fresh dimension to the ongoing dialogue between race and gender, and gives voice to the women who are creating and shaping the feminism of the future.

(Luscher Color Test)
『This book and test was an old friend. However, when I ordered it (used) it arrived without the color cards that are used in the test. Without the cards, the test is useless and so is the book, so I sent it back.

From past experience, it is a very interesting and accurate test.

(Very Interesting Concept)
『I just came across this book and decided to try it out. I don't know if it accurately sums up my psychological state - as if I knew that answer - why would I need the test to tell me? As it is written under the presumption that we would need to be told how we are feeling, it is hard to objectively measure it's accuracy. The one thing that astounded me however, was the amazing amount of correlation in the results. After choosing 2 sequences of 8 color cards, you are given various parings to look up for interpretation - 10 in all. The interpretations of all ten of my combinations basically said the same thing, often verbatim. Of course, I was skeptical and had to look up the other interpretations to make sure that they weren't all identical - they weren't. It's still hard to say what value if any the test has, but my results were at the very least an interesting coincidence. I give this book four stars - 3 for being interesting, 1 for it's possibility of accuracy, but I'm holding out on the last star, as like most psychology and self-help books, I found it to be too vague to be more than an interesting diversion.』

(Easiest of the deep psychological tests to self administer)
『I have no clear idea of exactly why the Luscher color test works, I simply know that, in my own case, it proved incredibly accurate. It is amazing that a simple selection sequence of eight colored cards could reveal so much about internal anxieties, compensations, and conflicts. Yet, there definately is a correlation with these inner states and color preference.

This is probably the easiest of the deep psychological tests to administer and interpret. It is not a game and is not to be used carelessly or improperly. In fact, I first heard about it in graduate school when I overheard one of the psychology professors go ballistic when he found that the undergraduates were administering the test to each other. He wasn't upset because he thought it was nonsense, on the contrary, he was upset because he knew it to be a deep and powerful tool with the potential to do great damage if misused.

One further warning, if you buy an older edition of this book make sure that: #1 the eight cards are included, and #2 that they are not too badly faded.

Oh yes, the text states that this test is still accurate even if you are color blind!

(Interesting test but with reservations)
『I recall being interested in this test when it came out in a Bantam Books edition when I was a young psychology grad student. Based on what's known as functional color psychology, the test uses somewhat off-color panels and their pairings to assess personality dynamics. The reason for why pure colors aren't used for the 8 panels is discussed in the book, so I won't burden you with it here, but it's actually one of the more interesting parts of the theory of color psychology and why the color panels appear as they do.

I played with the test quite a bit at the time and although found it interesting and perhaps valid, the entire area of color psychology, although fascinating, still seems to me to be a bit of a stretch as far as using it for any real depth psychological purposes. I haven't looked in detail at the research used to standardize the test, so I can't say for sure, but in my own case I found the test best for determining when I was under stress. At other times it seemed less accurate, and my results could vary from day to day.

Also, as another poster here commented, the descriptions for the results, although they sound clinical and fairly specific, can be switched around and read to people and they will agree as much with them as with the supposedly correct diagnosis or interpretation in the book.

The field of color psychology is much more prevalent in Europe than in the U.S., but the most I would say is that the test should be used in conjunction with other tests, which is likely how it is used, anyway, rather than as a single diagnostic tool. It might also be used as a quick assessment tool in Europe to be followed up by the longer, more detailed personality and diagnostic tests such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory or MMPI, the Rorschach Inkblot test, and so on. However I give the book 4 stars for effort since it is a fascinating concept and could still be useful.』

(Life Altering for Me)
『I started getting into psych books in 1985 and lucked into this one early on. I have used it over the decades to help countless other people in determining the source of inner conflicts. It is based on extensive scientific research in Germany in the 40's-60's. You can read more about the history from Luscher himself at the Luscher-Color web site, just be sure to hit the』

(A TRIBUTE TO MOM...)
『This book is, indeed, a tribute to the author's mother. In it, the author, a man whose mother was white and his father black, tells two stories: that of his mother and his own. Tautly written in spare, clear prose, it is a wonderful story of a bi-racial family who succeeded and achieved the American dream, despite the societal obstacles placed in its way.

The author's mother was a Polish Orthodox Jew who migrated to America at the age of two with her family during the early nineteen twenties. They ultimately settled down in Virginia, where she led an isolated and lonely life; shunned by whites because she was Jewish and shunned by blacks because she was white. She was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood, where her father, a despicable and harsh man who brutalized his handicapped wife, ran a local grocery store, where he priced gouged his black clientele.

She left home and moved to New York when she was nineteen and never looked back. She met and married the author's father, a black man, when mixed race marriages were still frowned upon by both whites and blacks. Still, she always felt more comfortable around blacks than around whites. When he died sixteen years later, she married another black man who nurtured her eight children by the author's father and proceeded to give her four more children.

The author tells of his childhood, of his family, and of the issue of race that ultimately colored his life while growing up in predominantly black neighborhoods, where his mother stood out like a sore thumb because of the color of her skin. It was always an issue his mother avoided discussing with him, as for her it was not an issue. It was not until the author wrote this book that his mother discussed the issue of race within the context of her own life. From this dialogue emerges a fascinating look at the issues of race, as well as religion, and how it impacts on an individual's identity within our race conscious society.

It is also a very personal story. While the author's family was economically disadvantaged, his eccentric and independent mother always stressed education. She was a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsense from her twelve children. A convert to Christianity through her first husband, with whom she founded a Baptist church, she provided her children with the will to succeed. Consequently, all twelve eventually went to college and did her proud.

The story of this unique family is told from two distinct, parallel perspectives: that of the author and that of his mother. While both are interesting, it is his mother's story that dominates this beautifully written book, which is, indeed, a tribute to her. It is truly a story told from the heart, as the love that the author has for his mother is evident with every written word.』

("It's the fit, not the cut...")
『I think what men find most frustrating about the present day shopping experience is the daunting and sometimes overwhelming task of fishing through the big well placed stacks of shirts, pants, shoes and the seemingly incoherent placement of everything else to include belts, ties and jackets. That experience, combined with the attitude of pushy sales people and the general frustration associated with prolonged shopping and one begins to understand why men eventually give in and just let their wives shop for them. But, armed with Carole Jackson's, Color for Men, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. The book simplifies a complicated and tricky jungle of patterns and colors in such a way that any man can approach dressing and dressing well with strategy and confidence. This book should be required reading for department store managers. Although the material is a bit dated the information is timeless. For instance; contrary to popular belief, men should experiment with choosing their own colors instead of letting their wives, mothers and/or superficially flirty sales girls' choose their colors for them because generally, one naturally gravitates towards flattering colors. And once you learn what season's colors work for you, and how to separate the pieces of clothing according to your seasons color fields, the battle is almost over. You are then armed with enough information to build not only a survival wardrobe, but a suitable general wardrobe too. What's even more amazing is how easy matching colors can be and how badly most people (to include women) choose their colors. Do yourself a favor, buy this book and be color blind no more. Because Color for Men will help you clear the fog of different shades and hues and cheerfully guide you into the light of dressing well.』

(Informational and Focused)
『I was introduced to the book in the 80's when it first came out, and actually attended a seminar when it was something people did. I have been looking for the book since. I still have my identifiers and color swatches from when I went through the seminar to discover the best colors for me to wear.

I would recommend reading the book and really putting it to use. Typically there are shirts and items we all wear that we love. Usually these are the items that hold a key to what you really should be buying in color and style. I would also recommend the book.. "More Dash than Cash" since it is a good way to take the practices into the arena of usage and style.』

(Still Feels Current 19 Years Later)
『I have not quite finished reading this book but am very excited about it. It really is a good comprehensive guide for men. These are difficult lessons for men to digest and they are presented fairly straightforwardly and in a manner that is simple to understand. Despite the fact that the book is almost twenty years old, it is one of the few where I find the illustrations do not seem particularly out of date. On one point I may have to disagree with Ms Jackson. She states that a man should not mix three patterns when wearing a suit, shirt, and tie. I find that in modern dress, this can distinguish the men from the boys. I do agree that this is somehting that not all men will be able to do effectively so it may be best to avoid it (which may be the authors point in discouraging it). If you want to go one step beyond this book, pick up Alan Flusser's Style and the Man. With these two resources, you will have no excuse for not looking your best every day.』

(Absolutely brilliant book for men)
『This is a great style book for men since there are few good ones out there for us and, if we spend too much time thinking about it, some people think we're you know what!

The main thrust of this book is: different color and shades look best on certain people depending on their skin coloring but that isn't limited to race either. The four areas are: winter, spring, summer and fall. Few variations in each one, too.

Now, that alone would give this a four star but the author goes beyond that: she covers hair styles based on face shapes, combining colors, clothes to buy based on your dressing style (these are broken down, too) and advice for what to seek out based on your color styles and your dressing styles. For instance, a more formal type gets certain types of jackets and slacks whereas a casual type gets more jeans and the like.

Excellent book. Highly recommend.』

(A complete guide with clear color and selection advice)
『I'm excited about this book. I love to buy clothes and I often dislike what I have bought almost right away. This gives a comprehensive guide to choosing colors and designing a complete wardrobe. It allows up to 2 years to phase out old and unmatching stuff. The book allows for people who dress casually and are on a moderate budget.』
『Based on the same system that has already worked for millions of women, COLOR FOR MEN is foolproof and scientific and works for every part of a man's wardrobe, from his business suit to his jogging suit. Using basic principles to understand the subtleties of skin, hair, and eye color, you match yourself to one of four seasonal palettes. (A Great Stride Forward In Teaching Chinese Characters)
『I think this is an outstanding contribution to the teaching of characters. Hanyu pinyin allows you to encode phonetic information in written Chinese, but does not, like writing directly in characters, dispel the ambiguity of meanings between
homophones. Being able to directly encode the tonal value of a character by giving it a color firmly links the pronunciation and meaning of a character without the ambiguity of the pinyin transcriptions.
The book itself is deceptively modest in its declared intention. . .to simply instruct the reader in the meanings of 100 characters drawn from the HSK1 Level A. However, because the author adds a great deal of grammatical and syntactical information, as well as including additional chinese words in pinyin to create illustrative sentences and to provide models for how to properly form sentences, the alert reader will be famililarized with a great many more than 100 characters by working through the book.
Right now I am working through the HSK1 List with a selection of Pentel Colored Brushes bringing the characters to vivid life by displaying the proper tones directly in the the characters themselves.
Listening to the mp3's of the characters and exemplary sentences while reading them in color format firmly fixes their pronunciations in the mind. Writing them with colored pencils or pencils, or drawing them with Pentel brushes further fixes them in the mind.
Once you are familiar with the color assignments to the various tones,it is then no problem to move beyond the book itself and include any other instructional materials into this method, writing and reading other learning materials in color.
Altogether an great advance in teaching Chinese.』

(Combined with Pimsleur, an amazing supplement)
『First I started with Pimsleur, and then I bought this book to supplement Pimsleur. This book is amazing. I am grateful to the author for creating it. Don't buy this book by itself, however, and expect to learn Chinese from it alone. It's a vocab and grammar book in one, and although it comes with audio cds, it's just too dense to read straight through. That's why I say it's the PERFECT supplement to use with an audio program like Pimsleur. As you learn the words with Pimsleur, you can look them up in this book and learn how to write and read them as well.』

(An Invaluable Supplement for Learning Tones)
『This book provides a brilliant and easily remembered means for internalizing the tones of characters. For the first time, I have finally locked tones into my memory. If you are a student of Chinese who has struggled with making the transition from pinyin (the Romanization of characters) to writing and reading sentences in characters, the value of this book is obvious. If you are just learning Chinese and still enjoying the luxury of the pinyin and tone-marker crutches, this book is essential. As soon as you leave pinyin and are confronted with the character for 'is' and do not remember whether it is 'shi' with a 2nd tone or 'shi' with a 4th tone (the difference between 'is' and '10'), you will recognize the books' value.

'Chinese through Tone&Color' should be a companion for most beginning Chinese programs. Its primary focus is learning (so they become automatic) the tones of 100 characters by assigning a color to each of the four tones. But it is much more than this, because every lesson sets the target character into basic sentence structures with additional, color-coded characters. I have found that by using these basic structures I am finally remembering tonal patterns fundamental to Chinese. The color coding of the tones accompanied by the CDs has provided an invaluable memory tool.

The pace for the beginner is fast, and I have found it is necessary to listen to the CD tracks multiple times in order to lock the target characters into sentence structures. Several characters are introduced at once in simple sentences. If you have studied no Chinese before, you may find it difficult to catch on at first, but it is worth the effort; if you have studied some beforehand, this book will enhance your tonal memory and accuracy. It is likely to become an indispensable learning supplement. The book, with 2 CDs, is small, compact and durable--easy to carry. Later, the downloadable image-enhanced mp3s make it possible to practice any time, any place.』

(Tackling Tone)
『Before reading this book, all I knew about Chinese was that it's a tonal language and therefore very difficult to learn if you don't speak a tonal language already. After reading this book, I have a better grasp of what exactly the different tones are and how they change the meaning of the word. The CDs are extremely useful for the demonstration of the different tones. In a language where meaning depends largely on pronunciation, the CDs are crucial to the learning process. In the beginning, I was constantly looking back at the useful "Note on Pinyin" on pages 8 and 9. The "Note" explains the differences in pronunciation between our alphabet and the phonetically transcribed Chinese alphabet. If you are struggling with your study of Chinese or are just curious about what exactly learning a tonal language entails, this is the perfect book for you!』

(Singularly comprehensible.)
『As someone without any real prior background in Chinese, I can safely say that this book introduces the Chinese tonal system in a way that anyone can understand. It's exceedingly clear, succinct, and well put together. I was able to load the character images onto my iPod without a problem, and it's really convenient to be able to study at any time, without bringing the book with me. I'd recommend this system to any new learner of Chinese, particularly if you're intimidated by the complexity of the language.』
『This title is avilable in book and CD. Most linguists believe that writing was unveiled in China during the latter half of the 2nd millennium BC. Despite the many thousands of written characters however, there are approximately 1,700 possible syllables in Mandarin, compared to over 8,000 in English. As a result, there are many homophones, distinguished in written Chinese by the use of different characters to represent each one. Not all the characters are pronounced using the same tone, so to Chinese ears they sound different. To Westerner ears, however, they all sound the same. It is even possible to write a test in Chinese using only one syllable, pronounced with different tones. The well known story by Chinese linguist Zhao Yuanren - Story of Shi Eating the Lions - uses nothing but the sound "shi".This book offers a new, intuitive method for more effectively mastering spoken Mandarin Chinese. It assigns a colour to each of the four tones in Mandarin, creating a psychological, synaesthetic resonance between written characters, colour and sound. Sample sentences and grammatical patterns are printed in colour to reinforce the association between tone and colour. With practice, each character generates a colour association, and the tone for the word can therefore be recalled immediately and effortlessly - a true asset to any beginner learning Mandarin. Designed as an engaging introduction to 100 primary characters, the book also contains an audio CD of the lessons and tones, as well as downloadable files and artwork for mp3 players or computers. Compact, well designed and innovative, it is perfect for a student interested in mastering spoken Chinese while simultaneously studying the written characters.』
