(Almost all you need to get through your undergrad studies.)
『I don't understand why so many science texts are overwrought and redundant. Worst of all, you end up paying premium prices for poor content, circuitous writing, and an inefficient organization of topics. The real coup de grace comes about when instructors recommend student companion texts with a sly wink and a nudge.

Fortunately, resources like the 'Color Atlas of Biochemistry' are as affordable as they are efficient and useful. It will prove to be an invaluable reference, study aid, and a more adequate companion text than those offered by the more popular publishers.

Far be it from me to suggest that you hurt your instructor's coffers by using this book as a primary source, but it would certainly be a great addition to your library.』

(A must have for students of biochemistry.)
『I was given the "Color Atlas of Biochemistry" as a gift midway through my undergraduate career. It has been an invaluable study aid--the illustraions are plentiful and very clear and the text is well organized and packed full of useful information. It's perfect for when you want to just get down to the critical information instead of having to dig for it in a bloated textbook. I have gotten more use out of this book than any other during my studies. Even for a graduate student, this book is perfect for refreshing your memory on subjects you haven't studied in a while. Highly recommended.』

(Excellent small text/atlas.)
『I wish I had this book when I started my studies. It makes an excellent companion for reading with Voet&Voet. The illustrations are superb, worth memorizing, and supplement the excellent illustrations in Voet. Very easy to follow. The overview diagrams bring a great deal of information together visually.』
『Basic biochemistry in color pictures! This book focuses on particular and fundamental aspects of human and mammalian biochemistry. Besides coverage of structure and composition of biologically relevant molecules and their metabolism, it also includes interlinking of chemical structures with biological functions, how molecules are arranged in cellular space and in the organism, and the evolution of biochemical processes.』

(Information for all Watercolorists)
『This is a clear and concise review of different watercolors and their properties. It is well written and understandable with many examples and lesson illustrated in the book. It is a must for any artist who uses watercolor whether they are a beginner or more advanced in the use of color.』

(from the author....)
『I just read the reviews of my book for the first time and am really so appreciative and pleased! As a teacher, the purpose of this book was to share what I've learned - hoping that I could write it and show it and communicate it. It looks like it works - and that is the greatest pleasure possible for me. The book took me two years to write and paint - but two years well spent. Hope some of you readers will visit my website, [...] - and come to a workshop! I'd love to meet you!!!』

(Great for anyone wanting to learn more about watercolor color)
『Ditto the above reviews.
Jan Hart has painted and written an excellent book on color. I would say one of the top 2 or 3 I have found during 30 plus years of painting and study, and I have read and studied a lot of them. Constant insightful tips of using color, constant color circles painted with sets of pigments, very specific as to the colors used. Many, many color examples and paintings further clarify the well-written text. Frequently there are 3 or more color illustrations on a single page, all of them with Jan's crystal clean and clear, beautiful watercolors (except there are some included paintings by other artists). Every serious watercolorist should own, read, and study this book. It is much more valuable that its selling price.』

(new colors to try)
『She exhibits an enthusiasm to try different color combinations than you might not have tried before. Very important to have someone who has as much experience as she has to encourage you to experiment. Nicely done.』

(Definitely a MUST for watercolorists who love color)
『Jan Hart has written articles for Daniel Smith Paints, most on her "amazing mixes"--unusual blends of watercolor that give luminous results in mainly landscapes. If you enjoyed seeing her articles and work (which really glows with subtle and startling color) then this book has a lot more of her way of mixing paints.

Though landscape and botanicals seem to be her major love, the book also has animals, buildings, seascapes, skies and other subjects. She shows them in variations. There is no attempt to reproduce reality exactly--instead, Hart shows how to mix colors to get a result that dazzles the eye like fluttering leaves and bluish shadows on a bright, sunlit day.

There is a section at the end on Daniel Smith Primatek colors. These are natural pigments made of ground stones and earths. They are sometimes less colorful and bright than synthetic paints, but Hart shows how to use their unusual granulating properties along with more traditional watercolor pigments to gain some eyecatching mixes.

This book is a good tutorial for those who want to break away from the standard three to eight color palette and try for something different.』

(Great art book for teachers!)
『I teach 2nd grade, and I have less talent for art than a goldfish.

None the less, I've been able to help my students create some knockout work, using the ideas, pictures, and instructions in this book.

Highly reccomended!』

(Awesome Book)
『After spending thousands of dollars on homeschool materials, I think it's funny that a $15 book should be my favorite! This book is awesome. The BEST part is that is in color on glossy paper!!! Now we can actually see what we are supposed to be doing. I'm only buying color, glossy art books from now on.

We, 7, 9 and 39, created every project in this book and we were all pleased with our results. Basic paint supplies are needed, and I'd recommend good quality papers. The drawing is kept to a minumum so even the littlest can do it. I mounted all the projects on black construction paper and turned our hallway into a gallery. I'm keeping this book and doing it all over again in a few years, so we can see our progress.』

『This book is for ages 9+. Included are reproductions of other students' paintings, both children and adults as well as those of acclaimed master artists. The overall message of the book is that you don't have to be a professional to have fun and enjoy using colour in art.』

(an inspiring resource)
『The photos in this book are glorious, and the story of the Bohus collective is inspiring. The book provides reconstructed patterns for Bohus-style garments at the back, and it is as far as I know one of the only places to find such patterns. These reconstructions are not technically authentic Bohus garments -- their gauge is a bit bigger and they use different yarn. So if you are a stickler for authenticity, buy a Bohus sweater kit online. If you are interested in learning more about the history of this kind of knitting and you want to knit a gorgeous Bohus-inspired garment, this book is for you.』

(Poem is the right title for this book, but it's a lot more)
『The Bohus Workshop in Sweden was started about 50 years ago and brought together creative designers and hand knitters to make some of the most stunning knitted creations ever. The wool was carefully chosen, the designs modern and timeless, with that ineffable Scandanavian flair. Sadly the Bohus workshop has long been closed. All that remains are some treasured vintage sweaters and...this book to document their history. And not only does this book document the history of Bohus Workshop, it also has patterns so you can make some of the famous designs yourself.

This isn't knitting for the timid; many of the designs boldly go where color knitting isn't supposed to go; there are patterns with 3, 4 even more colors per row. The colors are subtle and varied, knitted in an angora/wool mix to create the "shimmering" effect the Bohus designs were famous for. But if you embark on such a knitting adventure you will surely make a masterpiece you will wear or give with great pride.

A source for the kind of yarn that closely matches the Bohus mix is provided in the book, plus patterns for the famous fairisle-like yoke pattern models. Also included are jackets with matching designs to the yoke pullovers, mittens, and hats. You can certainly adapt the design to your own creations. Not all the designs require many colors per row; some are two color only throughout and some rely more on texture than color.

This book is worth reading for textile history, for history of women in clothing design, and for knitting history. And it's also a valuable knitting reference for people who like to knit their own designs as well as reproduce them from patterns. All in all, this book has a lot and is one of my great favorites.』

Full-color reproductions of original pattern swatches, sweaters, and accessories from the Bohus workshop in Sweden, along with the history of the women who designed them.

『Many handcraft traditions are lost because no one records the history and techniques, even though numerous examples and practitioners still exist. Thankfully, Wendy Keele has prevented this from happening to Bohus-style knitting.Poems of Colorshows this unique Scandinavian knitting style-- philosophy, really--in careful detail, elucidated by a number of the original knitters and beautifully illustrated with color photographs.』

(The Makeup Industry for Those Who Can't Get Enough)
『I know many people who are addicted to makeup, and I'd recommend this book to any of them. While it's not earthshattering information by any stretch of the imagination, it's still a fun, easy read. It follows the development of those seasonal color stories we so anxiously await from the initial to conception and how colors are chosen through fashion shows and advertising to the final product at the counters. You learn how the colors for the story are chosen, how magazines list that products used on models aren't really the products used (did any of us doubt this?), and many other behind the scenes tidbits.

The book is an easy, entertaining read. I finished within a couple of evenings. Behind the scenes business material is potentially dry but Gavenas manages to keep it interesting and easy to follow. It would be a great summer poolside read.

For the Neutrogena/Olay questions below...Neutrogena is still making its cosmetics line. Olay discontinued its cosmetics line but is still making skincare.』

(Must read for makeup junkies ;))
『This is a fascinating look inside the makeup industry and is a must-read for a make-up junkie like myself. It documents the process of creating the color story. How it's conceived, marketed, sold, ect. and reveals many interesting insider details about the color stories and the mis-truth's reported by popular beauty magazines. It also goes back in time to the conception of the beauty industry telling the beginnings of the Estee Lauder empire and walks you through a Mary Kay conference (found this pretty amusing). At times the detail becomes repetitive and I did a bit of skimming but overall it was an interesting little read.』

(Well researched a written.)
『This is a fabulous book that's well worth the read. Gives fly-on-the-wall accounts of various elements of the beauty industry. While some of the accounts seem a little exaggerated and reductive, it is a useful tool for those interested in the beauty biz.』

(Fun and easy to read but that's about it.)
『Of course, what more do you need in a book? Okay, first off--the disclaimers--I never read fashion magazines (although I have been known to rifle through them at the doctor's office), I don't follow fashions, I am not a cosmetics connoisseur (I only use mascara and eye pencil and I have used the same 2 brands for over 20 years). so why did I even bother to pick up this book? I figured it would give me some idea of how the "other side" lives (i.e. the proudly fashionable, well groomed, perfectly coiffed, put-together women). Well, not really. But I certainly have an idea about how the author feels about such women. No, on second thought I don't. The ambivalent tone of her writing was a bit confusing. Could she speak more contemptuosly of the bored and boring "suburban mom" (no I am not one therefore I am not speaking defensively) in search of a superficial "escape" from her dull and dreary existence? And then later she would sound vaguely sympathetic for these pitiful creatures. Oh never mind--let's just all forget our problems and crises by spritzing ourselves with some fun perfumes and putting on a new face.

Some of the history regarding the pioneers of the cosmetic industry --is interesting. But the narrative regarding the development of one of Estee Lauder's seasonal "color stories was somewhat disjointed and difficult to follow. But maybe it's just me. Maybe I need to start reading Vogue and Glamour. Maybe I need to lighten up and put on some pink lipstick.』

(F.Y.I)
『I have yet to actually read this book, but I feel moved to correct to previous reviewers who have. Actually, you are both wrong. Both Neutrogena and Oil of Olay products are still being produced though the latter is now packaged and advertised as simply "Olay".』
『For everyone who's ever slicked on lipstick, flirted with eye shadow, or browsed the bewildering array in any store's beauty de-partment,Color Storiesoffers an insider's view of all the brainstorming, bickering, and bitchery that go into those little sticks of color and pans of powder.

Former beauty editor Mary Lisa Gavenas takes us behind the scenes during the nine months that culminate in the launch of a season's all-important "color stories." We discover how one shade becomes the "must have," why makeup artists never use the same products as the rest of us, and exactly how easy -- and impossible -- it is to start a million-dollar makeup line.

Backstage at the runway shows, we're swept into the catty, chaotic work world of makeup mogul Bobbi Brown and supermodel Gisele Bündchen. At Estée Lauder headquarters, we see the achingly chic Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer spin societal trends into a lipstick lineup. We watch magazines cheat to make makeup work for layouts, find out how Cindy Crawford got to be worth every penny of her $10 million contract, and make the pilgrimage to Dallas as 35,000 of the Mary Kay faithful assemble for the fabled annual Seminar. Along the way, we also learn about marketing, media, and the manipulation of aesthetics, about the codification of physical beauty, and how this industry revolutionized the role of women in business.

Through its often funny, sometimes poignant scenes of seduction, courtship, and consummation,Color Storiesreveals why women become besotted by beauty products -- and why that love affair will never end.』

(Disappointing Text But Good Pictures)
『Don't publishers employ editors or proof readers any more? This book is full of simple spelling errors and poor grammar, the kinds of errors that a proof reader would find very quickly. Many of the errors are missing or duplicated articles. Others are cases of a plural noun being used with a singular verb or vice versa. Another class of error, common to many books that include photographs, is captions that don't match the photograph in some important detail.

Still, the many photographs in the book are of very good to excellent quality. Most of them are pictures that I have not seen in any other publications. It's unfortunate that the quality of the text and some erroneous captions make the whole thing suspect.』

(INFORMATIVE&EASY READING !)
『Wish I had this book several years ago to help me plan the prototype layout and what engines to acquire. Highly recommend this book for NYC fans.』

(Me and my Son love it.)
『The book is well done, and the photos are super.
My five year old can't put the book down. It really shows the NYC in a way that was never seen before, unless you worked for the railroad. If you love trains, you must add this book to your collection.』

(great short history of the new york central system)
『This is a great short history of the New York Central System. Chapters 1 to 4 deal with the makeup of the system and history. Chapter 5 deals with Grand Central Terminal and New York electrification. Chapter 6 is the steam locomotive fleet. Chapter 7 is the diesel locomotives. Chapter 8 is the electric locomotives. Chapters 9&10 are about the freight and passenger service. The pictures used in the book are great. The amount of information is remarkable. If I were to purchase only one book on the New York Central System, this would be the book.』
For decades the New York Central reigned as one of Americas most important railroads. Beginning with the 1853 consolidation of a group of fledgling railways that formed a route from Buffalo to Albany, the New York Central grew into a powerhouse transportation company with more than 10,000 route miles.

This illustrated history of the railroad that grew to power under the Vanderbilt dynasty covers every aspect of the New York Central through its 1968 merger with longtime rival Pennsylvania Railroad and the eventual merger of Penn Centrals successor, Conrail, into Norfolk Southern and CSX. Along the way, readers are treated to a selection of archival photographs, commissioned route maps, period ads, and timetables detailing all of New York Centrals operations--steam and diesel, freight and passenger--not to mention associated icons like Grand Central Terminal, the legendary Henry Dreyfuss shrouded Hudson steam locomotives, the Water Level Route, and the 20th Century Limited passenger trains.

Prolific railway author Brian Solomon sources 150 evocative photographs, promotional materials, and postcards not included in the previous edition to deliver a nostalgic and colorful look at the New York Central. In addition, there are four specially commissioned maps.

(Excellent on Photoshop)
『This is a very good book. There's a lot of useful information specially for beginners. The book explains all the basics of color management. It gives you a good understanding on what's going on your image file from the moment you take a picture up to the printing of your final images. It's really focused on Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0. So, I found the title a little misleading since I was looking for a book to teach me about Color Management without leaning to a particular software. Nevertheless it's a very good book.』

(Great book for those who need to know "why"&"How")
『I bought this for my husband who loves photography to make due until we can afford a color managment tool for the screen. He has loved the book and has found it very helpful. He is an computer engineer and want to know all the ins and outs of everything and he has found this book to be just the thing.

The only downside is it doesn't take into account Vista's new color management software so if you have Vista you will have to look online for the best way to calibrate your software.』

(Wow - Color Management that is understandable!)
『I would give this book ten stars if I could. Color management is something that all digital photographers need to be competent with. There is very little on the subject that is comprehensible to those that are not technically inclined. This book meets and fills that gap in an excellent and understandable manner. And it is brand new! And full of color illustrations (something new for "Dummies books"). And it is geared to Photoshop Elements 5, a program with a large following. I teach a Digital Darkroom class using Elements 5 and this book is a natural follow on for that class. It also ties in very nicely with the new Photoshop Elements 5 for Dummies book. (Also full of color illustrations). Of course if you use the full versions of Photoshop, the principals are the same but you implement them slightly different, so the book is valid for both versions. It also covers the Mac version of Photoshop Elements. All in all, a great book!』

I will recommend to friends.』

  • Shows digital photo enthusiasts how to ensure that the color in an image file is accurately represented and reproduced, from camera or scanner to monitor or printer

  • Discusses the main components of color management including understanding light, matching digital images to displays and prints, working with color spaces, calibrating a printer, and using color management tools

Although I enjoy machine quilting and piecing I love the portability of this as well.

(Blooms all year round)
『I am finding more quilt patterns are coming like dress patterns--- in a self-contained envelope - plasticized and made of cardboard rather than paper - that is re-sealable. Each envelope contains all the instructions on large sheets of paper that can be taped to a wall or pinned to a bulletin board. This prevents your instructions from becoming lost in the maze of fabric you're working with.

The appliqué patterns are at full size so no copying is needed. You can take the pattern out of the envelope and start right in on creating your own winter garden. The directions for creating "Winter in the Garden" are well written and have various tips such as how to do mitered corners and the best way tocut your fabric. A color photo of the finished quilt is in the directions and, of course, on the envelope itself.

A bonus booklet is included with this pattern. "Color-Palette Appliqué" explains what a color palette is and how the author used it in creating this project. If you read through this booklet before beginning your quilt, it will explains all the codes used in the directions.

If you are an avid gardener or know someone who is, this quilt is one that will keep the summer blooms alive all year long. Make it for yourself or as a gift and the summer colors will brighten the room as well as keep a body warm.

『Itten's COLOR STAR is a wonderful and useful tool. I wish the price were a bit lower to make it more affordable for students - I would definitely consider adopting it as a tool for my Color courses. Itten's work with color is at once practical, accessible, and sophisticated. If I were using my personal money for this...forget it, not worth it - google image and print at Kinko's if you just have to have it.』

(important tool for artists&designers, read his book first)
『Johannes Ittens is unarguably recognized as the master of color from the Bauhaus school of art. The color star is a valuable asset to any artist or designer that wants to become better with making color choices. However, as any good tool goes the color star by itself won't be much use to you unless you've studied the material presented in one of his books.』

(Just a set of wheels)
『Very disappointed by the "book", which actually consists of a set of wheels,
with a 4-page booklet which does not explain much. I returned the book.』

『Consisting of eight stencil-like disks that can be placed over ltten's color wheel to compare cool and warm values, complementary colors, and different hues and intensities, this useful and innovative tool helps designers explore a myriad of harmonious color.』
