(Only poor if you choose to be!)
『Coat of Many Colors is Dolly Parton's most autobiographical song, and it is beautifully transformed into this splendid children's book that families will love to share.

Dolly needed a coat, and her mother sewed her one made of a box of donated rags. As she sewed, she told her the story of Joseph from the Bible and his Coat of Many Colors, and she taught her to see the value of what is really important, despite the taunts of others too blind to see the real truth.

This is a gorgeous book worth its weight in gold!』

(Nice book)
『We rented this book from the library and my daughter cried when we had to give it back.. So we purchased it. It is exactly like the song and the pictures are really cute.』

(Better than Expected)
『My Mother-in-Law was an avid quilter and collector of children's books that had anything to do with quilting and sewing. When she passed away, I inherited this book. Upon receipt of it, I took one look at it and tossed it aside, believing that... because it was written by Dolly Parton ... it would be overly sentimental, sappy and irrelevant. I just haven't found that big-name celebrities make for great children's book authors.

BUT, I was wrong. Though this book simply follows the lyrics of one of her songs, it is so well spoken in book form ... and is abridged perfectly. The illustrator puts lovely, subtle, yet powerful images to the lyrics as well.

The message is much less didactic than I assumed it to be. And the story basically shows how one little girl felt immense gratitude for what little she had in life (compared to her peers) because what she did have was enough ... and her life was filled with love. This humble little girl receives some teasing for a "coat of many colors" that her Mama made of scrap fabrics ... but the way the girl handles the teasing is wonderful ... because she is secure with who she is and what she has ... thanks to her Mama's teaching.

This is a book that I now share with my 3 year old son. Though we are not "lacking" financially ... I am always making him his clothes&toys, etc. so that he appreciates handiwork and the love that goes into creating things for others. Plastic toys are a dime a dozen ... but a "Coat of many Colors" is a treasure forever. This book is a wonderful way for me to keep exhibiting that idea.

I would say that the target age for this book is 3-7 years old.
Enjoy!』

(Late arrival with no explanation)
『Book and DVD's were fine but delivery was not. I ordered the items 2 weeks before Christmas and did not get it until December 28th. Estimated date on website said December 24th. Amazon even advertised on the home screen that "orders placed today delivered on or before December 24th".
If I could have at least gotten an email notification that the items would be late, then I could cancel or buy another little gift to give in place of the late items. No information at all, just late items. My bad...I was hoping for the best and did not prepare for the worse. Now I wish I would have cancelled. Most orders from Amazon have been great...just don't take them for their word when they promise orders by December 24th. Go to the store and get something else, bring it home and wrap it up so it will be ready to give.... just in case Amazon can't live up to their "Delivered by December 24th" statement.』

(A Modern Classic)
『Beautifully illustrated, this gem of a children's book should find a place in every child's library. Dolly's memorable story stays with me always. "Coat of Many Colors" adapts nicely to a childen's tale and reminds the reader that it's not nice to make fun of people, and what's on your back is not as important as what is in your heart.』

Winter is coming to Tennessee and there's no money to buy a new coat, so a little girl's mama sews one for her out of rags. The little girl wears it to school proudly, and when the other children laugh, she gives them a quick lesson about what it means to be rich. Judith Sutton's beautiful paintings bring one of Dolly Parton's best-loved songs to life. "The heartfelt verses are imbued with the same genuine, infectiously likeable spirit Parton herself projects."'Publishers Weekly.

『The rolling hills of Tennessee farmland, framed in lovely patchwork quilt patterns, set the stage for Dolly Parton's (of Grand Ol' Opry fame) warm childhood memories. The text comes directly from Parton's autobiographical hit country and western song of the same name. Perhaps the grammar is imperfect, but what C&W song ain't rife with grammatical errors--it's part of the vernacular. The story centers on a poor, but happy and loving, family (yes, they do exist) who find clever ways to deal with their poverty. As winter approaches, Mama sews a coat for her daughter from a box of scraps that someone has given her. Of course her classmates make fun of her for having a coat made of rags. But sticks and stones... "And although we had no money / I was rich as I could be / in my coat of many colors / that Mama made for me." That doesn't mean the child's feelings aren't hurt, or that she didn't feel angry. But the message comes through loud and clear (like Parton's voice): the child's mother has provided her with the strength to deal with other children's jeers, and family love can sometimes be enough to pull a person through.』

(Not Free SF Reader)
『Cerryl, from The White Order, is all grown up here and in a position of power. In this book, we see a lot of the same important events of The Magic Engineer, but from the Chaos Side.

It seems that diplomacy is something that will be important in his future. Politics and taxes, all that sort of thing.

What is interesting is that despite the Black and White names, it is all just grey, depending on whose viewpoint is shown at the time.

(Excellent)
『I've always been a fan of this series, but this may well be my favorite to date. The tie-in from the "other side of the fence" is very enlightening, and nicely written.

I found myself thinking, "Why don't Cerryl and Dorrin just get together and talk? They want the same thing...", as if these were two real people.

Any book that can make me forget I'm reading a book, is an excellent book indeed.』

(A Great Read)
『I just finished a re-read of this book (along with its immediate predecessor The White Order), and I now remember why these two are probably my favorites out of the entire Recluce series. Modesitt is in top form here -- the characters are real people making hard decisions as well as they can (not always perfectly), and you truly feel for them, even as you see their weaknesses. The main character (Cerryl the mage) is especially memorable.

Another nice aspect of this book is the parallel with The Magic Engineer. Though I did not enjoy that book as much as this one, seeing the "other side of the story" was quite interesting, as it sheds light on the fact that the characters in both are simply doing the best they can in their respective situations. There are some "better" and "worse" characters, but they show up in all the various countries, trades, and magical abilities, and no character is simply good or evil.

If you are interested in this book, be sure to read The White Order first, as Colors finishes the story that it begins. No other knowledge of Modesitt's Recluce series is necessary, though a read through The Magic Engineer in advance is illuminating. These books will stretch your imagination, make you think, and (best of all) make you glad that you read them.』

(Probably the best of the series so far.)
『This book along with the previous book, The White Order, make up a really great story about the white mage Cerryl. While every other book in the series is written from the perspective of the Blacks and portrays all chaos wizards to be totally evil (which most of them seem to be), these books provide a look into the workings of the Whites. It turns out that not all whites are truly evil and in fact many have very honorable ambitions to help the world rather than take it over. The Colors of Chaos was especially interesting because it told the same story as The Magic Engineer (with Dorrin the smith) exept from the perspective of Cerryl. It shows how there are two sides to every coin and that peole from both sides (except a few such as Jeslek&Anya) actually believe that they are on the side of good. In this story, told from the perspective of the Whites, Dorrin the smith and Recluce seem to be the bad guys because of their support of rulers who refuse to pay the road tariffs (to the detriment of all of Candar).

Also, Modesitt's writing style has come a long way from his earlier novels and this book was much more interesting and gripping than its predecessors... I strongly reccomend this book for any Modesitt fans or fans of fantasy in general (although I believe that you'll have a much better appreciation of this one if you read the others in the series first). This book does much to patch up the complex story of the Recluce Saga.』

(Another Great Read from Modesitt)
『This book is absolutely thrilling. It has great political and economical intrigue. It is made great by the qualities and the diversity of the main character, Cerryl. He is a young white mage in the city of Fairhaven. He was a Patrol Mage, an assassin, and a temporary governor of a recently captured city.

The strengths and weaknesses of Cerryl made the book good but how money and economics influenced the course of action made this very realistic. The political backstabbing made the book very interesting.
Also another book written by the same author blended into this story but was told by the good side. This book was written from the evil side.
Coming to a conclusion this book is a great read. It is not very easy to follow but is still great.』

The biggest fantasy from L. E. Modesitt, Jr. to date,Colors of Chaosis the story of the White Chaos wizard Cerryl: his education in life and love, and his rise to power in the magicians guild of Fairhaven. This is the direct sequel toThe White Order, which told of Cerryl's boyhood and youth, and takes place at the same time as the events in Modesitt's earlier novel,The Magic Engineer. Yet it stands alone, the longest Recluce novel, a portrayal of the growth and change of character and of the strengths and weaknesses of an age-old civilization held together by the power of magic. Ceryl, now a full mage in The White Order, must prove himself indispensible to Jeslek, the High Wizard. Whether through assassination, effective gorvernance of occupied territory or the fearless and clever direction of troops in battle, Ceryl faces many harrowing obstacles, not the least of which is Anya, the plotting seductress who's the real power behind the scenes of the white wizards. With his wits, his integrity, and the support of his love, the Black healer Leyladin, he must survive long enough to claim his rightful spot within the ruling heirarchy of the White Order. This is a must-read for followers of the Saga of Recluce, offering a unique, sympathetic point of view of the White Chaos wizards-the forces that throughout history have opposed the magicians of Recluce.Colors of Chaosis the ninth book in the saga of Recluce.

Aside from this inaccuracy, it's a pretty good book, although I prefer hardcover for kids' books for durability.』

『"The catalogue ... is truly excellent and makes an important contribution to the study of Greek Art." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review
"An overwhelming volume. The subject matter ... is described in great detail in nine chapters. Essential."--Choice
This catalogue documents a major exhibition at the Getty Villa that was the first ever to focus on ancient Athenian terracotta vases made by techniques other than the well-known black- and red-figure styles. The exhibition comprised vases executed in bilingual, coral-red gloss, outline, Kerch-style, white ground, and Six's technique, as well as examples with added clay and gilding, and plastic vases and additions.
The Colors of Clay opens with an introductory essay that integrates the diverse themes of the exhibition and sets them within the context of vase making in general; a second essay discusses conservation issues related to several of the techniques. A detailed discussion of the techniques featured in the exhibition precedes each section of the catalogue. More than a hundred vases from museums in the United States and Europe are described in depth.』

(Not Recommended)
『This book along with is Sense and Nonsense book was horrible. We used it for a Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice class and none of the students or my teacher thought that either book was good. It was way too complex for people who just want the straight forward facts. In looking back at the book, it would not be my recommendation to use it. The whole class suffered in the potential learning due to these books. I respect Professor Walker with his teaching and serving on boards throughout the nation, but unfortunately, I cannot agree with this and his other book I used. I hope this review helps.』

(Careful, unbiased review of the evidence)
『There is nothing casual about this book's consideration of racial bias in the criminal justice system. The authors offer a very careful, balanced and thorough evaluation of racial bias in the various stages of the arrest, sentencing, incarceration, etc. based on a comprehensive consideration of the evidence from numerous studies. What is so striking about this study is that the authors are able to describe this evidence in a very understandable way that should be accessible to the general public. They find that while some areas of the criminal justice system are racial discriminatory, others are not. An excellent book!』

(Informative - YES; balanced and unbiased - NO!)
『I purchased this book as recommended supplementary reading for a college level criminal justice course. The book is advertised as "Comprehensive and balanced" and "uniquely unbiased" on the back cover. I was hoping for a book that honestly and objectively presented both sides of the debate regarding race and crime. I am not qualified to debate the accuracy of the data presented, or to argue that the authors are incorrect in their charges of discrimination in the criminal justice system. However, the book adamantly asserts that discrimination is responsible for the disparity between races in the crime data and casually dismisses opposing arguments. The authors presentation is neither balanced or unbiased.』
『Comprehensive and balanced, THE COLOR OF JUSTICE is the definitive book on current research and theories of racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination within America's Criminal Justice system. The authors synthesize the best and the most recent research on patterns of criminal behavior and victimization, police practices, court processing and sentencing, the death penalty, and correctional programs, giving students the facts and theoretical foundation they need to make their own informed decisions about discrimination in the system. Uniquely unbiased, THE COLOR OF JUSTICE makes every effort to incorporate discussion of all major race groups found in the United States.』

Selecting a paint color, whether for a home’s exterior or the bedroom walls, can feel like a perilous venture. For good reason. Like no other aspect of our environment, color has the power to profoundly affect our feeling of well-being. And taste in color is an extremely personal matter: to choose a color—a saturated red, an understatedochre, a sizzling-hot pink—is to say something revealing about oneself. It’s no wonder that committing to a color demands an act of bravery.

WithColor at Home, the Echo Design Group’s Meg and Steven Roberts aim to inspire and encourage you to jump into the exhilarating world of color. Illustrated with more than 150 images of color-infused homes across the country, the book will bolster your courage as you develop a color vision for your own home.

Color at Homeinsightfully explores the emotional territory mapped by each hue—aqua’s refreshing oasis; orange’s warm radiance; the stark, urbane chic of black and white—while providing essential practical advice on topics such as coordinating colors with a home’s architectural style or historical period. The innovative color grids included in the book help you define your preferred palette.

(Addicting)
『This book helped me realize that I was a Core White with a secondary Blue. That's just exciting.

Now for the real review: I happen to find Hartman's system brilliant. He leaves plenty of room for individuality, but has still managed to find specific characteristics that dominate society and group them into four basic patterns. He also takes care to explain his theory and why it works in real life. With that are plenty of anctedotes of patients with whom he has worked, all that human intereraction to solidify these personalities.

The quiz is easy, but complex and varying, managing to cover many parts of a person. After that are the descriptions of each color, both positive and negative. After that he expands into relationships, work, personal improvement, you name it--the goal of making our individual personalities work. It's all very practical for understanding ourselves and how we work with others.

It's informative, insightful, and just plain fun. Most of all, it's very logical.』

(This book literally changed my life!)
『I am a Registered Nurse and I was working at a hospital as a "quality assurance utilization manager" when a co-worker gave me this book. I was in the 13th year of my career and had always received great annual reviews from supervisors regarding the quality of my work. After working in this new administrative job for a year I got one of the lowest evaluations of my entire working life - after I had put more time, energy and passion into this new job than I had in any of my previous positions!
After I read this excellent book (back in 1991) I immediately understood the problem: My boss was a "Red" and "Yellow" personality, driven by power and craving focused attention. My personality is "White" and "Blue" so I seek peace and intimacy. Trust me - it was not a good fit! Thankfully I was able to quit my job and become a full-time parent to my two sweet children.

Fast forward seventeen years.....
My children are now 21 and 22 years old and attending college. They have been raised on the "Color Code" concepts and it has dramatically improved the quality of their interactions with family, friends, teachers and other acquaintances. My daughter has an intense "blue&yellow" personality (like my husband) and my son is "white and yellow" - which must be the most laid back personality on the planet! I am not exaggerating when I say that I use the concepts in this book every single day.

Thank you Taylor Hartman for your most excellent book!』

(Life changing book)
『I am amazed by this book. As I read the chapter on my personality color, I couldn't believe that the author had me figured out down to the very nuances of my behavior. This book has helped me view others with more understanding and forgiveness. You will never look at people the same way again. Every person I know who has read this book can't stop talking about it. It goes down as one of my favorite books ever. Your relationships will improve as a result. This book is a must read for all and a perfect wedding gift.』

『The color code is not founded on anything but theory. No tests, no experiments, no psychological research other than Dr. Hartman's personal observations. The information in this book is useless and repetitive. You will be confined to a core motive, and will be stuck with all the flaws and strengths of that color. The book mentions but does not explain how different core motives make a person, and how to overcome personality flaws. Go ask any psychologist and you will find out The Color Code is really Color Crap.』

(The most insightful book ever!!!)
『This book really helped to open my eyes. I understand why people do the things that they do. it helped me to understand myself and why I feel the way that I do sometimes. I have a whole new "people" outlook!』

『If you're familiar with the Hippocratic or medieval model for typing personalities (choleric, melancholy, phlegmatic, and sanguine), then Taylor Hartman'sThe Color Codewill be a short refresher course for you.

This "original" personality paradigm divides us into (surprise!) four colors-- red, blue, white, and yellow--that define the characteristics of our fundamental natures. Reds are the annoying bossy types; blues are moody artists; whites are unmotivated layabouts; and yellows are--you guessed it--party animals. Well, maybe it's not that extreme, but according to Hartman, who reads the text himself, each person has one true color that explains the motivations behind his or her behavior. For example, if you are a red, you are probably a natural-born leader and have a high need for control. While this characteristic may do marvelous things for your career, it could have a devastating effect on interpersonal relationships.

In a simple, easy-to-follow, chime-filled format, Hartman suggests ways to capitalize on each color's positive attributes and offers advice on how to downplay its weaknesses. Did we mention the package also includes a personality test?(Running time: two hours; two cassettes)
