It was full of fairly useless information and not at all entertaining or a joy to read which I'd expected it to be. I've given it a rating of 2 but had to think long and hard to even go that high.』
(A LOT of information packed into a deceptively small package.) 『_Colors: The Story of Dyes and Pigments_, is an excellent little book to read if you are interested in colors. It covers pre-history up through the modern era, and it discusses some of the chemistry, much of the mineralogy, and a lot of the economics&politics that went into the use of different dyes&pigments through the eons.
It is also lavishly illustrated, with many many photos, including photos of famous works of art, close-up photos showing artistic techniques, photos of artists' materials, and photos of historical treatises relating to cloth dyeing and other skills. There is a lot of good technical content, including explanations of the differences between dyes, pigments and lakes, and details of attempts in antiquity to create artificial colors, going as far back as the Egyptians.
The chapters are Painting&Dyeing, which covers paints and dyes from antiquity to the Middle Ages; Colors in the Middle Ages, which covers new technological&economic developments in the Middle Ages; The Explosion of Supply and Demand, which covers how the increased trade of the Renaissance, Enlightenment Era, and the Industrial Age drove the search for new colors; and The Triumph of Industrial Chemistry, which describes how colors are made today.
There is also a chapter titled Documents, which has excerpts from a number of historical works about dyes&pigments, and that chapter alone is worth the price of the book. The bibliography is also excellent.
It was a bit slow in places, and since it was originally written in French, there is a certain flow to the text that is subtly different from many contemporary books written by native English speakes. But, the differences are not unpleasant, and for the most part the text is very engaging.
I did notice that it repeats the statement that India Yellow was made from the concentrated urine of cows who at only mangoes, and according to Victoria Finlay in _Color: A Natural History of the Palette_, that provenance is mythical. But that was the only jarring note I found in the entire work.』
(A treasure chest of interesting trivia) 『I am a Color Manager for one of the worlds largest paint companies and even though I have been working with pigments for 15 years I have found this book to be a treasure chest of interesting trivia that I didn't know or had long forgotten. But this book is not just for chemists. If you are like me interested in art, especially paintings, you will find that this book gives you a wealth of information and facts that one can use to better understand the development of art through the centuries. I can highly recommend this beautifully illustrated booklet which is fun to read to everybody (not just color nerds like me).』 『From the painted caves at Lascaux, 40,000 years old, to the medieval cloth industry to today's computerized chemistry, this engaging book surveys the history of dyes and pigments-in a work as rich, varied, and colorful as a box of crayons.
160 illustrations, 135 in full color,』
『In our overstimulated, color-saturated society it is easy to forget the impact of color in the dull world before cheap dyes and plastics.Colorsis a delightful little book, highly illustrated and packed with intriguing information. It traces the history of dyes and pigments from cave paintings to modern textiles. The book's four sections cover the uses of color in ancient times; its development and refinement in the Middle Ages; the explosion of supply and demand after the Renaissance; and the triumph of industrial chemistry in synthesizing and inventing colors. Production processes often paralleled those of alchemy, giving an almost magical quality to colors. Dyes were expensive in medieval Europe and could increase the price of a cloth tenfold; thus color was used to indicate social status, with aristocrats in bright robes standing out against the drab mob. Since antiquity, writers have compiled technical manuals on dyeing and pigment manufacture, often using more ancient texts, so that a great many antique recipes and techniques have been preserved. We learn, for example, how Indian yellow was made from a concentrated extract of the urine of cows fed exclusively on mango leaves (which was not healthy for the cows). Every page of the book has interesting tidbits of information, such as the derivation of blue jeans (frombleu de Genes, Genoa blue, a form of indigo). Clearly written and well-designed,Colorsreminds us of the powerful ways color permeates our lives.--John Stevenson』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (It's OK) 『This is ok book. But the writer needs to do more research on light effects and colors.』
(Clear and concise) 『This book is very clearly written and provides in-depth information about the 49th Vibrational Technique, a way to heal using color and light. It is one of the only books out there, that I am aware of, that actually has instructions for using the processes expressed. I have not yet tried the technique, but do plan to in the near future.』
(Color/Vibrational Healing) 『At only about 130 pages, I find this book to be quite informative and easy to read. It is basically about the usage of the 49th Vibrational Technique (color which can be combined with sound--musical notes--for healing purposes) and acknowledges the work of East Indian physician Dr. Dinshah P. Ghadiali. The technique of recirculating blocked energy goes back to at least 500 B.C. and was used by Pythagoras and others. The 49th Octave is a vibrational range that corresponds to certain colors, which fall within an electromagnetic energy spectrum. Basically, these colors can be projected to certain areas of the body to affect, and maybe heal, certain medical conditions.
I say "maybe heal" for a reason. You absolutely CANNOT heal someone who does not WANT to be healed. Been there. Yes, believe it or not, there ARE people who really do NOT WANT to be healed. It takes a 1) desire to be healed, and 2) it usually means you have to fix/change whatever made you "sick" in the first place. Change is a painful process for most people and often not worth the trouble. So, if they don't fix whatever made them sick, the condition often returns.
Anyway, the book provides a lot of base information about colors, their vibratory rate, how colors and body energy interact, auras, chakras, energy imbalances, healing with sound, and matching color vibrations to various parts of the body. The book even provides how to information, such as what colors to place on what areas of the body to help reduce high blood pressure. An example of what colors to place on what areas is: in the back of the book, there are 123 conditions listed.Let's pick one: #51 Gout--Lemon and Magenta on WBF; Scarlet on 12. WBF is Whole Body Front. Area 12 is on the back side of the body, and is the kidney area. This how to is explained in more detail in chapter 5, color application. There are also diagrams of front and back area numbers and locations of major organs so you can figure out what this "language" is saying. There really is a tremendous amount of info in this roughly 113 page book (plus about 17 extra pages of end-of-book stuff.)
There are also good explanations of various colors for those who see colors in the auras or wherever. There ARE people who see colors and energy fields, but if you are checking out this book, you probably already know that.』
(Color Medicine) 『It's a well written book, but so it should be, based on all the information that is taken from Dinshahs'initial work on light therapy over 50 years ago. You can get copies of Dinshahs' material "cheap" from their website... Dinshahs' work was well ahead of its time. It's too bad certain organizations are"still" threatened by his work even though it was an array of doctors who had written most of the original testimonials backing up his work. "Color Medicine" is mostly Dinshahs' work with some good added info. on the healing powers of sound. It's nice to know a modern book acknowledges Dinshahs' work as opposed to many other "Color" books that don't.』

(Very informative&effective nutrition) 『This book has changed my approach to food. I feel great.』
(Best book and easy to understand) 『Everyone is talking about how we should eat more fruits and vegetables, because it is better for our health. This book explains what and why in easy to understand language. I am getting copies for family and friends, because we were so pleased with it. I have read other books on the subject, but I feel that this one is an easy referance as well as accurate information.』
(Great Advice) 『What color is you diet is a great book. Dr Heber hit th nail on the head with this one. My eating habits are forever improved. Thanks Dr Heber!!』
(The Best Weight-Loss Plan) 『I cannot say enough good things about this book. Almost a year ago, my husband decided he needed to lose weight (his doctor had been telling him to do so for years; he was verging into diabetes despite being on Glucophage, Glucotrol, and Lipitor). My husband's one criterion was he wanted a diet that allowed him to eat frequently during the day because he didn't want to be hungry. Enter Heber's book!
Merely by increasing the number of vegetables and fruits that my husband ate, he crowded out the crap he'd been obliviously living on. He began to count calories because the results from merely eating more healthily a la Heber made him feel very positive. In six months, he lost sixty-five pounds. His cholesterol went from 220 (a number achieved with the help of those meds) to 125. He's kept the weight off five months now, but we are determined that he will be eating this way for life. We have a word in our household: Heberific. My husband's Park Avenue doctor phoned me and said: "I didn't recognize your husband from his numbers [meaning his blood test numbers]. They've never looked like this! You've added at least ten years to your husband's life, and really fifteen quality years. You are a hero!" I accepted the compliment because it's I who do most of the food preparation.
Now I go to the fruits-and-vegetable market almost every day. I too have made a game of tracking what color fruits and vegies my husband is eating (I composed a daily chart; I've noticed another reader said he did the same thing). I keep meaning to write Dr. Heber a thank-you letter but then I thought perhaps I should simply post my praise on Amazon.
I know Dr. Heber formulated this way of eating primarily to safeguard people from the major chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer) that are diet related, but this way of eating is fun and has had extraordinary results in my family. I've given this book to my parents (who are not overweight) and recommend it incessantly. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that five stars for this book isn't enough.』

Don't settle for a diet that's mainly beige or white! Add some color to your diet and enjoy a level of health and energy you never dreamed possible. In What Color Is Your Diet? renowned medical researcher David Heber, M.D., introduces Eat for Your Genes food plans–– revolutionary approaches incorporating the latest breakthroughs in nutritional and genetic research –– and his unique 7 Colors of Health food–selection system, which groups fruits and vegetables by the colorful, beneficial chemical substances they contain. This groundbreaking book includes: 埄NA–compatible food plans that supercharge your health and help you lose excess body fat 埔he ten best herbal remedies for everyday health problems 埔ips on colorizing your diet and twenty fully Color–Coded recipes 埓ample weekly menus, tips for dining out, and shopping lists
』 『"Most Americans eat far too few foods with any color in them," says David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. Instead, we tend to eat a high-fat, highly processed "beige diet" full of snack foods and refined grains (bread, cake, pastries) that don't fit the requirements of our genes. The average intake of fruits and vegetables is only 3 servings a day, when it should be 7 to 11 servings a day.
According to Heber, the varied colors in fruits and vegetables indicate "specific beneficial substances that help to prevent the common diseases that affect many of us as we get older." Damage to DNA leads to changes in our genes as we age that can result in diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Substances found in plant foods protect our DNA.
Heber has coded plant foods into seven colors, all of which have different health-protecting qualities: red, red-purple, orange, orange-yellow, yellow-green, green, and white-green. "Colorize your diet" to protect your DNA by eating at least one serving (one-half cup cooked or one cup raw) of a fruit or vegetable from each color each day. Huber also suggests that at least half your protein intake be soy. He includes diet plans for men (1,800 to 2,000 calories) and women (1,200 to 1,400 calories) and 19 recipes to get you started. Though the emphasis is on plant-based foods, most of his recipes are not vegetarian.--Joan Price』

Color is context. This book not only provides exceptional color comination suggestions but it places color in historical context. It jogs the imagination in so many ways.
I was a grapic designer and am now a fine artist. I continue to use this book for inspiration after using it for over a decade.』
(I can't recommend it) 『I greatly admire the work of Leslie Cabarga -- particularly in the book LOGO FONT&LETTERING BIBLE. Perhaps because of the aforementioned authorship, I let my guard down in purchasing DESIGNER'S GUIDE TO COLOR COMBINATIONS. The same tired layout is depicted hundreds of times in colors sampled from "historic" paintings. Though subject to personal opinion, I find the large majority of such colors are period dated or otherwise unsuitable for current graphic design projects. As with other books of this sort, the Live Color feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 renders this reference work unnecessary.』
(Very useful) 『I ordered this book for my college courses. It has been very helpful for several projects so far, especially when having to do projects that are historic in content.
~Stacey~』
(Delightful book) 『The book contains hundreds of color combinations derived from packages, posters, advertisements, giftwrap by designers over the past century. It covers Victorian period, Art Deco, Sixties, Modern times, etc.
On each page, beside the art piece, the author has posted a commentary related to the particular color combination which is often rather humorous and very much fun to read.
Underneath each color combination are listed CMYK colors used in that particular combination so that you can reproduce them in your graphic design program - Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc. - if you find a color combination you'd like to replicate or experiment with.』
(Excellent book for the Color Combinationally Challenged) 『This book is an excellent resource for anyone in the field of Design. It not only offers a variety of color combinations to suit a particular style or time period but also includes the CMYK values to produce an exact duplication of the color(s) of your liking in the book (contingent upon monitor/printer callibration etc.).』

The book is a great read and introduced me to many animals that I was unaware of, and it did so in a fun way that most children can appreciate.』
(Mommy, why is that frog red?) 『A cool natural history book, geared for slightly older kids... Jenkins groups wildly different animals by color -- blue dart frogs along with hyacinth macaws and blue-tailed skinks, etc. -- and explains how each animal uses their distinctive coloring as an adaptive or defensive trait. There's a lot of tooth-and-claw action here: most of this stuff has to do either with killing prey, avoiding being eaten, or finding a mate. There's also a lot of text -- each of the dozens of animals being profiled gets a little explanatory paragraph next to their picture. The artwork is beautiful (if you like this book, you might also want to check out Jenkins' earlier work, "Biggest, Strongest, Fastest") and there's tons of great zoological information. Just the thing for a budding naturalist to pore over for years to come. (ReadThatAgain!)』 『Red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink—animals can be startlingly colorful. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Best Spiritual Gifts Tool I know of) 『(I am a pastor who uses this book in my church's spiritual gifts and ministry placement process. I am also a consultant for Natural Church Development-this book is part of a four book set to help churches improve in placing members into ministry roles).
This book is part of a massive paradigm shift which started several decades ago (for the Church growth writers and researchers). The book Natural Church Development and the national partners for the author (Christian Schwarz) have demonstrated there are 8 crucial areas of health for Churches. One of these 8 crucial areas is 'gift-oriented ministry'. The book 3 Colors of Ministry is the book which contains the actual tests used for individuals who want to identify their spiritual gifts. The book also has explanations for everything. There are two tests. The Change Compass attempts to show you which person in the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) you tend to focus most on and which one you focus least on...with the idea of bringing balance into your life by fully reflecting the fulness of God as He is revealed to us in scripture.
It is an interesting idea which is built on the concepts explained in Schwarz's book 'The Three-fold art of experiencing God'. (That book will someday be a classic in my opinion). I have found this test to be very accurate in my life.
Research has now proven what the bible said all along...that every member of the church should have a ministry. Research has also proven that everyone should minister using the spiritual gifts God has given them.
NLT 1 Peter 4:9 Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. 10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
The main reason most people use this book is to identify their spiritual gifts for use in a local church. Schwarz categorizes 30 different gifts (everything from music to leadership).
The way we use this book is with a 'Spiritual Gifts Counselor'. A Spiritual Gifts Counselor is trained to interpret the results of the tests in this book. There are three books in the 3 Colors of Ministry series besides this one. Using this book in a mentoring relationship....developing a process for a church and a book for spiritual gift counseling. This book is the actual test.
Unless there is a well designed process for a member in a church to embrace ministry and use their gifts, it will be pretty frustrating to buy this book and take the tests. It should be part of an organized effort.
4% of the people who take this test will find the results are not accurate. The authors state this fact in the book. This test is the only one on the market that has weighted scores for each gift based on field research (every question has a slightly different weight).
Now a story....when I first took these tests I felt an amazing sense of 'how did they know that?' Something inside clicked. It was very helpful. My wife took another very famous spiritual gifts test a few years before this one came out. (She is a very gifted teacher). That test did not show a teaching gift for her. This one scored it as very high.
So my experience is that about 1 out of 25 people do have trouble with this test....but that is a way better percentage than other tests on the market. This test is more expensive, but you cannot use Schwarz's test without understanding his new definitions for some of the terms...and the new paradigm (3 Colors).
I think when you consider what you are doing with this test (using it to confirm your ministry role in a church), a few dollars is no big deal. Get this test and skip the others. I also urge you to get all the 3 Colors of Ministry books. There is a new 3 Colors of Love book which I am working through right now. It's test is designed to help you identify what areas of character are holding you back from loving others more effectively (novel idea and full of practical tips).
In my view, the 3 Colors of Ministry book has opened up a whole new quality of measurement for church leaders who want to use the best tools they can to assess and place people into ministry. I give it a five star.』 『Would you like to use your spiritual gifts to their full potential? The 3 Colors of Ministry presents a holistic approach to identifying and developing your spiritual gifts. It is based on the three dimensions of God's nature, for which the author has chosen the colors of green, red and blue. In addition to emphasizing the critical importance of using your gifts in an authentically trinitarian way, this book shows you where you most need to focus your energies in order to bring this kind of balance to your Christian service. The natural result will be increased effectiveness. A gift test is included with this resource.』
