If you have any degree of previous exposure to Chinese language and Taoist concepts this is not a spring board to further knowledge, it is a rosetta stone. Not an ounce of this text is watered down, like so many of the other books on this subject. Further, the full inclusion of herbal formulas in this text are incredibly vital to understanding the true value of huang di's teachings from su nu.
Best of all ... there are no pictures.
A fine text by a true scholar.』
(Outstanding collection and translation) 『This book collects nearly two dozen classical writings on the use of sexual energy in achieving health and long life. It's a distinctly non-Western tradition, but presents a unified, interlocking set of ideas.
The largest part of this lore corresponds to Western alchemy. It uses many of the same metaphors, such as mercury, lead, and the crucible, and much of the same elliptical language. In a few places, the metaphors or code-words are so obscure that translators disagree wildly on their meanings, and even on whether the meanings can be reconstructed correctly. Other parts of the writings draw on mystical Taoism, Buddhism, and the same vital energies that explain acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Not surprisingly, much of the tradition is aimed at male readers, with relatively little concern for the women. Despite the over-all male orientation, the last few selections do address women, with needs that sometimes match and sometimes differ from the men's. Even the men's writings address the importance of the woman's excitement, though, and describe the outwardly visible signs of its many stages.
However it is phrased or whoever it is addressed to, this set of practices is based on summoning and channeling sexual energy. Many of the authors use the "paired way" of coition to raise that power. Others use solo exercises in self-stimulation for the same purpose. This seems especially common in the women's texts, possibly because placing her needs before the man's would have been culturally unacceptable. The emphasis is on yogic self-discipline rather than exotic poses. Still, one author does offer a list of couplings with poetic names such Mandarin Ducks United (a pose I enjoy very much, because of range of additional caresses it makes possible). I recommend this book very highly to students of Asian thought and to anyone else who wants to see different perspectives on the practice and power of human sexuality.

(An important reference work for the serious student) 『Here is the largest collection of historical Chinese texts on Taoist sexuality in English, excellently translated and footnoted. A must have reference work for the serious, advanced student.
This is not an introductory text, and I think a beginner would be hard pressed to understand and practice many of the techniques in the book.』
(Very complete. documented and Annotated) 『This is a work of scholorship and not simply a book about the ancient Chinese view of sex. It's very complete and contains both usuful material for moderns and very interesting historical material regarding alchemy, Qi Gong and Chinese medicine as they relate to sex.』
(the art of the bedchamber) 『I'm just a beginner on this subject,I started with some photocopies on the subject(nothing special)and found them not very elucidatory. I wanted to know more!...then I bought this book, although I haven't read it all, from the pages I read, I felt I could comprehend easier what was being said.It explained certain doubts that came accross from the other texts I read.
I think(from the little insight I have)that this book is perfect to understand the subject, if one already knows something about Taoist ancient sexual practices.』

Since Francesca Freemantle's 1971 phD thesis from University of London, a complete annotated translation of the Guhyasamaja Tantra seems destined to never be published in book form, thereby being available only to professional scholars, this text of Wayman stands as the only published translations of the seminal and utterly profound Guhyasamaja Tantra. Although we only get 3 chapters of 18 translated here, such is the scope of his scholarship and insight, the work as a whole is vastly rewarding and supremely precious. Humankind as a whole owes the brilliant Alex Wayman a profound debt of gratitude for making this 'arcane lore' accessible and presented in a mature and meticulous edition. Indispensible for students of Mahayana Buddhism.』
(Wish we had more, but this is good to start with) 『Alex Wayman has done a great service to both the academic world and to those of us interested in root documents of buddhist traditions. If you are looking for a complete translation of the Guhyasamaja Tantra, this is not it. Wayman has translated the 40 nidana verses, as well as chapters 6 and 12 of the root tantra, (which he considers the most important in terms of existing commentary on the tantra), along with Candrakirti's Pradipoddyotana commentary on these two chapters. Additionally, Wayman provides us with brief excerpts from all other chapters of the Guhyasamaja, with the exception of chapter 14 (unless I missed it), portion's of (the tantric) Nagarjuna's Pancakrama, and additional relevent quotations from various other as yet untranslated scripture and commentaries. He does all this in a very scholarly manner, using this work to discuss the ideas presented in chapters 6 and 12, as well as the 40 nidana.
The primary topic of this document is the three Lights and the Clear Light, but there is also important discussion on the Illusory Body and the winds.
If, after reading this, you want more (as I did), cannot read Sanskrit or Tibetan, but can read German, you might look for Peter Gäng's translation, Das Tantra der Verborgenen Vereinigung. Guhyasamaja-Tantra.』 『Reprint of a classic on Buddhist Tantra. Presents the forty Nidana verses, then initiates the reader into Tantra by introducing various translations of key texts. a major text』
IPhone 3G used's review (Best yoga book I've read so far) 『This book is written for those interested in yoga that suffer from depression and/or anxiety. Also for those wishing to boost their memory and concentration. You can use the poses separately or in the routines they are written in. There are routines for waking up, before bed, during the day and for when you are sad, angry, panicky, need a new perspective, to get unstuck, to feel proud and much more. This is a book you need to own or borrow for a long time until you memorize the moves. This was a very worthwhile read and for now, the best yoga book I've ever read.』
(A Great Introduction to Yoga . . . .) 『I picked this up at the bookstore, mainly because I was looking for a beginner's guide to yoga, and this seemed to fit the bill. The routines are simple and I really like the author's reassuring tone. The fact that the routines can also be done in as little as 5 minutes is also a big plus.』 『Everybody feels "blue" from time to time, but when depression persists for a long time, it can suppress your energy for living. Yoga asks you to be in the moment and to let go of the "chatter" in your brain. Once that chatter is released, you should be able to feel your emotions more clearly and think through what your really need and want. Yoga can be a mind/body solution to some of our problems, and the exercise, coupled with correct breath patterns, centres your thoughts and can help to lift your mood. Yoga's regulating and energizing properties can help alleviate many of the symptoms of mild depression. Its exercises can help to improve circulation, sending invigorating oxygen to the brain and muscles, and stretching and strengthening movements flush toxins from the body.』

IPhone 3G used's review (Yoga of the Heart) 『This is one of the best books I have read to do with yoga. Jenny Beeken is a wonderful teacher and the book is very easy to read.
If you have never had anything to do with Yoga before than this is the book to start you off. I love Yoga now and I contribute some of my love to what I was taught when I read this book.
Practice what she teaches and you will become a new person』
『An introduction to yoga for any student interested in the philosophy that underlies the postures. It stays open while you practice your yoga and it also brings the Indian teaching of yoga into a western context by means of White Eagle's teaching. Jenny Beeken shows how our choices affect the physical body and how the postures can open the understanding. Chapters include yoga in pregnancy, for the handicapped and for help in illness and convalescence.』
