』
(aleung) 『This is a useful and practical book worth reading by people who suffer from low back pain or prevention of the problem. The advice there tallies with management and exercise prescription from professional practising physiotherapists. The exercises can be performed by people who suffers from low back pain.』
(This book is excellent) 『I am 35 years old and was a very active runner, cyclist, lift weights and practiced yoga. I became immobilized overnight by back pain and an orthopedic surgeon shook his head and told me he didn't know why I was in so much pain. This book emphasizes yoga that can be done lying on the floor, so it can be used very early on. It is very similar to what I was prescribed by my physical therapist--I even took the book to my first appointment and she bookmarked the pages she wanted me to emphasize. Between this book and Back Care Yoga by Schatz I have returned to my normal activities. I even recommend having them spiral bound so you can lay them on the floor next to you. The only thing not in these two books was advice by my physical therapist--twice a day everyday--forever.』
(No more back pain) 『I love this book. I use it all the time. When I do these exercises all the time my low back pain is nonexistent. When I stop, the pain slowly creeps on back. I bought this book for my sister and she said it helped her too.』
(really good and effective) 『author gives the basics of backpain and causes which we overlook in general. first you should beleive in the process(dont make the pain to take control over you as it is more mind+body related) and follow it sincerely. Only difference what i found is that it takes around 30-min and not 15-min for any of the series a/b/c.Back RX: A 15-Minute-a-Day Yoga- and Pilates-Based Program to End Low Back Pain』 『From a noted pioneer in sports medicine comes a breakthrough regimen for stopping back pain once and for all—without surgery.

Sounds True, Incorporated
Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (I really felt "The Wave") 『My comments focus on the Lunar disc. I've not yet attempted the Solar disk** because of the focus on arm balances, but will tackle it on a strong day with modifications. As a general note, this CD set experienced birthing pains, with the Lunar disc contained a flaw. To their credit, Sounds True and Shiva&Co. demonstrated excellent customer service in replacing all Lunar discs with the corrected version in a timely manner. I am still mildly annoyed that the solar disk is blue, and the lunar disc is orange, but that's my problem to overcome. So be forewarned, if you are considering purchasing this, make sure Amazon sends you a corrected set.
It comes with a booklet explaining Shiva's intentions to bring the ocean to our practice, and the importance of fluidity to our lives and bodies. There are brief, adequate printed instructions and photos of her demonstrating asana in the sand, at times with the surf running over her. Music for Lunar is hypnotic with watery tones - tinkling, raindrops, ocean surf; for Solar it is a bit stronger, with light background chants at times, perhaps to help you "lighten" in the pose, and some unobtrusive percussion in the tough parts. Shiva's instruction is clearly in the foreground throughout.
During Lunar Wave Progressions, observant yogis will experience a true ocean wave - forward flowing (lunging, pigeon), ebbing (half splits, child's pose), and cresting (Anahatanasana, up dog or cobra).
Breakdown, 60 minutes total: 1 - Prana Wave warmup, arms sweeping up and down with the breath, progressing to spinal wave, to mat on all fours for cat's breath. Ohms chanted on exhale.
2 - Lunar Wave I, hip opening - pulsing lunges, Ardha Hanumanasa (half splits), Anahatanasana, Sphinx or Cobra with neck flow, pigeon wave; repeat opposite.
3 - Lunar Wave II/Wave 1 - hip opening and twisting - from half split wave flow forward into lunge, to pigeon, gracefully transitioning to seated twist then back to pigeon same side, Anahatanasana and its twisting version, cobra wave at top of the sequence; repeat opposite.
3 - Lunar Wave II/Wave 2 - Repeat half splits/lunge/pigeon wave with Ardha Danurasana (kneeling half bow) and full Dhanurasana (bow) culminating the wave.
4 - Forward Bend Wave I - Pigeon counterpose which is actually the final stretch into fully extended pigeon to "marinate."
5 - Forward Bend Wave II - featuring pulsing into forward bending Baddhakonasana then Upavista Konasana, wide angle pose.
6 - Option to practice Nadi Sodhana as music gives way to ocean surf.
7 - Intro to Shavasana, crashing ocean waves.
8 - Shavasana Wave, option to remain in relaxation while meditating to a kirtan-styled, simple and repetitive song about the ocean waves. It is unusual and I suspect some might find it hokey; I enjoyed it but issue an earworm warning!
**Notes on Solar (untried) - Arm balance flow disc starts out with a Yoga Mala Wave (Sun Salutations) and progresses to waves featuring Crow, Galavasana, Vismamitrasana (the side angle pose where you hold the top leg over your head!) and backbends such as camel and wheel. It looks like a vigorous practice for athletic yogis. Shiva speaks stronger than her hypnotic Lunar coaching.
The instruction on both discs is measured and accurate, delivered with a calm voice. Those who have found Shiva to be a little "out there" recently might wish to consider this offering, which somehow manages to be grounded and meditative at the same time. Cues such as "pour yourself over your right leg," "draw your heart towards the earth," and "back leg a bow with arrow extending through your heart" seemed appropriate and not overly flowery. Helpful reminders as to breath patterns, alignment, and pointers for modifications are given frequently.』
(Shiva Does it Again!) 『(I am updating this review from 4/22. As of right now there is a track error on this double CD set. The Yoga Mala on Disc I is reapeated by mistake on Disc II on Track 2 which is supposed to be a hip opening flow. The CD has to be remastered and then rereleased. Just wanted to let people know about this as you may want to wait to get your copy until the problem is resolved. Sounds True is the company that put out the CD. They can be contacted at 800-333-9185 for more information about a rerelease.)
Finally! A Shiva Rea Fluid Yoga practice for my iTunes! Over two hours of programmable practice, similar in structure to the Yoga Shakti and Fluid Power matricies; meaning you can do a preset flow or create your own flow based on your needs and how much time you have.
I did my first practice from these CDs this morning. I did the entire solar flow and about half of the lunar flow. I was very challenged and feel very worked out in the afterwards. (And I have been doing Shiva yoga or Shiva style yoga for going on 4 years now). I can see how someone who is new to Shiva Rea yoga might have to look at the photos in the 33 pg CD booklet while doing the practice the first few times to be sure to be doing the asanas correctly. She does use the Sanskrit names for poses as well as the English names and to me her instruction is clear and concise.
The solar practice focuses very heavily on backbends and arm balances. On Yoga Shakti and Fluid Power, I tend to focus more on hip opening and less on back bends and arm balances, so this is less experienced ground for me, especially in the realm of backbends which I have to be very careful with. Her backbend instruction is very concise and I felt relatively safe doing it. The arm balance wave flow is a kicker: Bakasana in wave 2, Galavasana prep and Galavasana in wave 3 and Parsva Bakasana in wave 4 was a LOT of arm balance and core strengthening work!
I really like the way she ties the Fluid Power concepts of moving in waves to the more traditional Yoga Shakti style by constantly offering the practitioner the option of doing the wave-like movements of Fluid Power or "marinating in the pose" in the more traditional way.
There is no specific abdominal sequence, but after all that arm balancing work, I felt fully worked out in the abdominal area.
I found the Shavasana to be a little odd: a folky type song with lyrics seemed to keep me from really going down into my restorative place, but different strokes for different folks. It doesn't take anything away from my five star review.
I can't wait to do the parts of the Lunar Wave Progressions that I didn't do today. THANK YOU, Shiva for another beautiful, heart opening, joy inspiring and challenging teaching.』 『With world-renowned instructor Shiva Rea's Yoga Wave, your yoga practice becomes a catalyst for rediscovering the potency and creativity you naturally possess. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (arcane but useful) 『I have read excerpts from this book before and thought it would be a useful tool to own. I am sure it is and I am glad to own it. However, to me the descriptions of the sutra are dated and there is too much spiritualist lingo.』 『
from theINTRODUCTION TO BOOK I:
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are in themselves exceedingly brief, less than ten pages of large type in the original. Yet they contain the essence of practical wisdom, set forth in admirable order and detail. The theme, if the present interpreter be right, is the great regeneration, the birth of the spiritual from the psychical man: the same theme which Paul so wisely and eloquently set forth in writing to his disciples in Corinth, the theme of all mystics in all lands.
We think of ourselves as living a purely physical life, in these material bodies of ours. In reality, we have gone far indeed from pure physical life; for ages, our life has been psychical, we have been centred and immersed in the psychic nature. Some of the schools of India say that the psychic nature is, as it were, a looking-glass, wherein are mirrored the things seen by the physical eyes, and heard by the physical ears. But this is a magic mirror; the images remain, and take a certain life of their own. Thus within the psychic realm of our life there grows up an imaged world wherein we dwell; a world of the images of things seen and heard, and therefore a world of memories; a world also of hopes and desires, of fears and regrets. Mental life grows up among these images, built on a measuring and comparing, on the massing of images together into general ideas; on the abstraction of new notions and images from these; till a new world is built up within, full of desires and hates, ambition, envy, longing, speculation, curiosity, self-will, self-interest.
Patanjali has in mind the spiritual man, to be born from the psychical.
His purpose is, to set in order the practical means for the unveiling and regeneration, and to indicate the fruit, the glory and the power, of that new birth.
Through the Sutras of the first book, Patanjali is concerned with the first great problem, the emergence of the spiritual man from the veils and meshes of the psychic nature, the moods and vestures of the mental and emotional man. Later will come the consideration of the nature and powers of the spiritual man, once he stands clear of the psychic veils and trammels, and a view of the realms in which these new spiritual powers are to be revealed.
At this point may come a word of explanation. I have been asked why I use the word Sutras, for these rules of Patanjali's system, when the word Aphorism has been connected with them in our minds fora generation. The reason is this: the name Aphorism suggests, to me at least, a pithy sentence of very general application; a piece of proverbial wisdom that may be quoted in a good many sets of circumstance, and which will almost bear on its face the evidence of its truth. But with a Sutra the case is different. It comes from the same root as the word "sew," and means, indeed, a thread, suggesting, therefore, a close knit, consecutive chain of argument. Not only has each Sutra a definite place in the system, but further, taken out of this place, it will be almostmeaningless, and will by no means be self-evident. So I have thought best to adhere to the original word. The Sutras of Patanjali are as closely knit together, as dependent on each other, as the propositions of Euclid, and can no more be taken out of their proper setting.
In the second part of the first book, the problem of the emergence of the spiritual man is further dealt with. We are led to the consideration of the barriers to his emergence, of the overcoming of the barriers, and of certain steps and stages in the ascent from the ordinary consciousness of practical life, to the finer, deeper, radiant consciousness of the spiritual man.
