(Meditating with the Body-Mind: a Great Gesture)
『I have been delighted with several of Will Johnson's books, and I have found this one to be the most profound and challenging of his works. Traditional students of Vajrayana Mahamudra teaching might take issue with his application of these teachings to ideas involving the body-mind in a method that has been variously described as somatic psychology or somatheraputic methodology. Tibetan Buddhism doesn't actually teach very much with regard to the nature of the physical body. Mostly the body is simply taken as the vehicle that allows one to experience karma in the form of physical sensations or emotional sensations. Meditation in this tradition mostly considers the body as an impediment to be transcended.

On the other hand if one practices the Chinese form of Yoga called Qigong or Taiji you can experience a vast range of meditative practices that take the body and its internal energies as their object. As a teacher of these Chinese practices I yearned for a meditative method that was as mentally deep and transformative as Tibetan Buddhist curricula while still taking the body as an object of focus. The first time that I read a translation of Tilopa's millennium old instructions for Mahamudra practice, I was taken by how much it sounded like the primary instruction that I give my taiji students. However, I was still at a loss for a practical method for implementing these mind instructions for a physical practice.

When I found this text I had at least one good approach to solving this dilemma. The second half of this book contains exercises that are physical embodiments of contemplating the philosophical explanations in the first half. Will Johnson terms these "Somatic Koans" in reference to the famous koan riddles of Zen Buddhism. If one practices these physical riddles the body will hopefully discover that the answers, or rather the un-answers to the problem of the body. I will give the "pith" description of the first Koan as and example. "Stand as tall as you possibly can while remaining as relaxed as you possibly can". These contemplations are as intellectually impenetrable as their famous purely mental progenitors, and if you give them the same time and diligence, they have the same potential to liberate your mind.

I would recommend this book highly to everyone, but especially anyone interested in body oriented or moving meditation. Dancers, runners and internal martial artist will find questions to the answers their body has been whispering with every wave of pleasure that occurs inside the magic moments when everything flows.

(Not much Mahamudra here)
『There are a number of good exercises (posture&breathing--though holding the breath for healing etc. is discounted)&wise observations (the value of balance&mindfulness meditation) in this book, but mostly it depicts the author's personal, impressionistic path. It includes Tilopa's famous&wonderful Mahamudra (MM) Song as an appendix, however, the book is not a commentary on it. The author uses only 3 lines of it to expound his personal views--heavily oriented towards the physical: bodywork, Hatha Yoga, dance,&the author's inventive "somatic koans." There's a Hindu bent to the book: the cover is a picture of the Hindu god Shiva,&the author advocates p. 144 "walk in Shiva's path." He repeatedly uses theistic terminology&Western mystical concepts--fine for comparison purposes, but not MM. Despite his rhetoric, Hinduism has nothing to do with MM, a Tibetan Buddhist wisdom teaching--the highest one of the Kagyu school (there's also a Gelugpa version--see the Dalai Lama's book). The author describes some Theravada Buddhist practices, but MM is a Vajrayana practice--a type of Mahayana, not Theravada--they don't practice MM. He also mentions Rinzai--a Japanese Mahayana but not Vajrayana sect (as is Japanese Shingon). While I agree with him that p. 144 "The practice is always one of personal exploration&personal discovery," his title is misleading; his teachings are not authentic MM. At best it's a low level, very loose, physically-oriented, New Age interpretation of a very high level, authentic, numinous, noetic path. In Hindu terms, it's a Hatha Yoga interpretation of Jnana Yoga. In Jungian/Myers-Briggs terms, it seems to be Extroverted, Sensate, Feeler, Perceptive. Since I'm far from that, (iNtuitive Thinker), I don't attune well with it--indeed, if I'd read this review before buying the book, I wouldn't have. Still, it's valuable to develop one's inferior function (Sensate for me), it's strong suit is my weak suit,&beauty is in the eye of the beholder--others may love it. It is easy to read.

But, it doesn't compare with other books I've read:
-- Osho's "Tantra-the Supreme Understanding," an enlightening/impressive interpretation of Tilopa's Song
-- Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now," a fine, new age oriented view of mindfulness
-- Traleg Kyabgon's "Mind at Ease," a terrific easy-to-read explanation of MM
-- Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche&Alexander Berzin's several translations/commentaries on volumes of the 9th Karmapa's wonderful MM trilogy
-- Takpo Tashi Namgyal's amazing "Mahamudra: The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation" (an English version of "Moonbeams of MM"), the "bible" of MM, if there is one

In addition to Tilopa's Song, Johnson quotes (p. 143) Niguma's wonderful MM stanza (with more MM than his book!)--Don't do anything whatsoever with the mind, Just abide in an authentic, natural state.
One's own mind, unwavering, is reality. The key is to meditate like this without wavering.』

(A great foundation and starting point)
『What a wonderful way to approach both meditation and living. So many writers, readers, and meditators fail to- shall I say?- glorify the miracle that is the human body's experience. It is our foundation, our temple, and our doorway to the phenomenally real and stupefyingly ordinary enlightenment that is the moment. This book is both food for thought and practice, and is a wonderful inspiration to truly and happily immersing oneself into the literally life-long experience of the body.』
『Presents three simple yogic principles from Tilopa'sSong of Mahamudra

• Explains how balance is the key to achieving higher consciousness

• Includes somatic koans

Mahamudra, literally "the great gesture," is often looked upon as the highest manifestation of consciousness known within the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition. InYoga of the Mahamudra, Will Johnson explains how it is possible to bring forth the condition of mahamudra naturally by utilizing the mystical yoga of balance to create what he calls the embodied cross.

He presents three simple yogic principles from Tilopa'sSong of Mahamudra. The first principle, "do nothing with the body but relax," forms the vertical axis of the embodied cross. It is an internal process that focuses on the upright structure of the body, which opens up our relationship to the divine source. The second principle, "Let the mind cling to nothing," allows the horizontal flow of energy to our mind. This horizontal axis represents our relationship to the world: what we see and hear, and what our mind does with the objects we perceive. The establishment of these vertical and horizontal flows of energy allows us to embody the third principle, "to become like a hollow bamboo." In this way the body and mind become extraordinarily fluid, surrendering to the currents of the life forces that constantly flow through them like air through a flute. The author concludes with a number of somatic koans, exercises that allow the direct experience of balance and lead to the creation of the embodied cross.』

『This is a great book. It has a lot of good info and is very detailed.』

(Two thumbs up.)
『I found this book to be very thorough, helpful and empowering. Having done yoga before pregnancy, I wanted to know what poses would still be "safe." I got the answer to that question and more. I highly recommend this book!』

(excellent yoga workouts)
『This is the best yoga book for pregnacy I have come across. I started practicing yoga two years ago, and I was looking for a book that would tell me what was safe and beneficial during pregancy, how to modify my poses and how to add new ones. This book did it. The workouts are based on *real*, familiar yoga poses, with some modifications to protect you and your baby. Frankly, I worked until the last minute, and never got around to practicing the meditations suggested, but the yoga saved my back. It never hurt once! Don't be put off by the new-agey "aura" of this book, if it is not your style. The workouts are just great!』
A safe and natural way to prepare for a wonderful birth experience! 『This book is a great resource for developing a home practice, and learning about the spirtual benefits of yoga.』

(A very different and great aproach to Yoga)
『I love this book. It is one of a kind. Easy to use. There are 12 spiritual muscles to work with. You can use the book in the order you wish. The author encourages you to make your own yoga posture. A treasure of a book.』

(Best Yoga book I have ever reviewed)
『This is by far the best yoga book I have ever encountered. The content, design, photography and overall feel of the book are superb. This book exemplifies everything yoga is and will be a tremendous asset to anyone wanting to start or go deeper into the path of yoga.』

(This book is simply outstanding)
『I am a former endurance athlete struggling with weight gain and back pain. I was given this book by a concerned friend. I thumbed through it, admired the exceptional quality, and placed it on my coffee table. When I could not even go for a long walk without pain, I started using the book, first choosing postures to address my spine. The benefits have been essentially immediate. It is well organized, light-hearted, and has proved to be a wonderful gift, indeed.』

(A must-have book for beginners and advanced yoga students!)
『Yoga is becoming very popular these days, and yet there aren't very many books out there that present yoga as clearly or beautifully as Yoga for Your Spiritual Muscles. The message of this book is that yoga can help you develop not only your physical self but your inner self as well. I really like how the author lists specific inner qualities (like Peace, Compassion, Awareness, and 12 other "spiritual muscles") that you can develop and then provides complete chapters with postures, breathing exercises and meditations designed to enhance each "spiritual muscles".』

(Has all the answers)
『If you are the type of person who is seeking to understand the abilities of human consciousness beyond the day-to-day existence, this material will provide you with that information.

It would appear that other books, self-help books in particular, have taken one piece of the totality of knowledge required to put into practice a desired existence inclusive of several realms of consciousness. They are not helpful in reaching these realms or levels.

The Integral Yoga is not "one piece" it is the totality. Within the pages of this book you will find the knowledge of a man, Sri Aurobindo, who, with continued practice, was able to reach realms or levels of consciousness unimaginable to most.

Clearly written, easy to understand and practice. It is a journey that is more fulfilling than any journey you might take in the world of matter.』

(The Integral Way)
『Wow, there are great books, and there a books that leave you in somewhat a query, this book exceeds the "great book status, and moves to the awesome book status. Aurobindo's awareness is rare, and certainly focuses on devotion to God, rather than, acquiring knowledge. Aurobindo succeeds in relating liberation with the reality of actually knowing and wanting God.』

("Your life is your yoga.")
『If ever you've wondered how to integrate the living of your life into your spiritual practice so that your life can actually become your practice, then Aurobindo's "The Integral Yoga" is for you. Here is one of the few recent sages who not only saw beyond the beyond, but lived his life from that perspective. If you've been searching, but not finding answers, chances are that Aurobindo's cogent comments will more than meet that need as he walks you through what it means to lead a deeply spiritual life, and then shows you how to do it.』

(Yogic Ways to Conquer the Battle Called Life!)
『This book is for those who want to conquer their everyday problems for ever and not seek an escape from them. Unilke his other books, the selections in this book are in easier prose.

You could open this book when Tylenol fails to bring sleep after a bad day, and pillow yourself with a good dream. Or you can read it first thing in the morning and allow yourself a great day ahead!

It is not a typical book that you must begin on its first page. It is a compilation of paragraphs and pages selected from his other writings, outlining the solutions arrived at by Sri Aurobindo after his experiments with Integral Yoga. Depending on what area of your life you are seeking to deal with on a given day, you can jump to the topic directly.

Whether you are seeking a higher peace or running away from your lower order problems, it is a book for you, for your spouse, for your child and for your parent. If you want to raise your purpose in this life to a higher possibility then this book is your waiting chance.』

(A rare find)
『I've seen this book referenced more than a dozen times by Wilber in his books so when the book presented itself I jumped
at it. It's not a book written by Aurobindo but personal instruction to those who have written to him seeking guidance.
This book is packed with the knowledge of one of India's most accomplished saints. This book reveals valuable insights
for the spiritual traveler as well as a road map of the journey. A book I would say is indispensable for anyone on
the path.』

『Integral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo's Teaching&Method of Practice US Edition One of the foremost Indian philosophers of the twentieth century, Sri Aurobindo was also a political activist, a mystic and a spiritual leader. Between 1927 and 1950, Sri Aurobindo remained in seclusion while perfecting a new kind of spiritual practice he called the Integral Yoga. During this period he gave detailed guidance to disciples and seekers, responding to thousands of inquiries. This correspondence constitutes a major body of work on the practice of yoga-sadhana. The present volume brings together a comprehensive selection of Sri Aurobindo's letters, organized by area of interest. An ideal introduction to his work and vision, it will also serve as an invaluable daily handbook for seekers of all paths - beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Glossary.』

(The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yoga)
『This book was outstanding! I have been in the martial arts for 33 years and most of that is has been with the study of Buddhism. This book was stellar in clearing up many of the cofusions that I did (and didn't) know that I had. I always thought that Buddhism was a philosophy! Not! It is an empirical study of your own mind. I highly recommend that all students of Buddhism and Yoga add this to your library. Even if you find it a repeat of what you already know you will love it as a 'loner' to friends.

(Excellent piece of work)
『This book does an incredible job of making buddhism and yoga accessible to the average, everyday man or woman raised in the west. The author has clearly spent years studying this material and is able to translate and present important concepts it in a format that is easy to digest but no less profound. Whenever the author presents an important eastern concept, he anchors that eastern concept to a western concept, which makes otherwise foreign ideas easy to relate to. Excellent work. By far this is the clearest, most well written introduction to basic buddhist beliefs I have read.』

(Buy this book)
『Not only would you do well to buy this book and read it, you would do better to memorize it. The benefits for your time and effort will be rewarded 100 times over. This is the first book I ever read that when I finished it, I went right back to page one and read the whole thing again.

There are several reasons why I am so enthusiastic about this book. For one, it is the most accessible introduction to Buddhism and Yoga that I have found. Levine keeps the jargon to a minimum and instead gives a sensible and straightforward explanation of subjects that are all-too-often made to sound complicated. The ideas are very simple and very useful, and Levine has a knack for conveying that.

Secondly, Levine is an accomplished researcher in cognitive psychology and he seamlessly blends ancient eastern philosophy with modern psychology. He makes profound philosophical insights sound like the plain common sense that they actually are. His sections on communicaton and anger-reduction strategies are indispensible. Neither venting anger nor suppressing it is effective. The only useful long-term strategy is to reduce it at the source, by changing the way we think about things. Levine has succeeded in making that point clear.』

(M.A.S.T.E.R.L.Y)
『Not so many books became instant "classics", this is one of them. As many people, I've read a lot of books on Buddhism, knowing intuitively that there is something interesting there.

I don't know for you, but for me, this gave me by moments an impression of a course in a complex and sometimes confusing jungle. A territory in which the sources are not always highly reliable or captivating. In such a context, the work of Marvin Levine is THE book which I hoped for years.

I am traditionally not a "fan" of the use of superlatives. But in this case,it would be particularly difficult to react differently: Marvin Levine book is truly an outstanding one.

The reasons are many. Among them,

- the text contain one of the clearest and straightforward explanation of the Core of Buddhism available. I've personally never found something like this and didn't knew it exists.
- the amazing relation between Buddhist approaches and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is remarkably explained. Moreover, Levine is a recognized expert in the field of CBT.
- the source is reliable, which is not always easy to find. No "pop-psychology" or "academic annoyances" will be founded here.
- the overall book style is attractive, in addition to its other qualities, this pure gem offer a real and intense reading pleasure.
- this is the kind of book that one preserves preciously in his/her library
- I don't know excactly why, but,the reading generate an true impression of personal enrichment. Also, this is the kind of book you "feel good" when reading it. Very Positive.
- The uncommon presentation of the Buddhists and Yogic principles is done is such a way that you can DO something with the material, you can apply it if you wich.
- ...
In one word: Remarquable. I hope that this review will contribute to the share of a rare pleasure.』

(Promises to be a Classic)
『This book is both a wonderful introduction to the psychological frameworks of Buddhism and Yoga (B&Y) and--most importantly--a practical guide to applying these systems to develop greater emotional maturity and overall wellbeing. According to Levine, the path to mature happiness developed in the ancient philosophies of B&Y requires calming one's conditioned beliefs and "passions" to allow greater control by the "anterior mind" (the "mind's eye" capable of observing, contemplating, and directing the mind). At the extreme, an "immature" individual is entirely conditioned by his or her culture, language, and biology--yielding the positive functions of anterior mind nonfunctional. Much like a little child, such a person's mental state is completely at the mercy of the external environment. He/she feels alright when a craving or ego desire is fed--but falls into tantrums and anguish whenever a craving or desire cannot be satisfied. Moreover, perception and interpretation of external events are distorted by the conditioned mind and its many unchecked passions (ego needs, cravings and attachments, fears and aversions, antipathies and resentments). The result is a life filled with suffering and illusion.

Fortunately, children typically do learn to moderate their most selfish behaviors as they grow to adulthood: "[P]art of growing up entails learning some self-transformation" (p. 54). Nevertheless, Levine points out that our American vision of "normal" allows for a mix of mature and immature behavior. "Normal" adults experience disquieting feelings (anger, pettiness, impatience, envy) quite regularly: e.g., when "stuck" in a traffic jam or when passed over for promotion at work. Because such unhappy events are common, many of us spend a great deal of time and energy feeling upset about one thing or another.

Levine points out that we don't have to live that way. Through the cultivation of positive attitudes (harmlessness, truthfulness, trustworthiness, sexual restraint, nonmaterialism) and practices (mindfulness, yoga poses, meditation), the anterior mind is freed more and more to reflect upon one's own mental processes and even transform them for the better. Thus the daily agitations diminish and we feel a greater sense of equanimity and happiness.

Viewing these ancient philosophies through the lens of American "positive psychology," Levine succeeds in developing a powerful "Yogic" model of cognitive processing that shares much with Albert Ellis (e.g., A Guide to Rational Living), Aaron Beck (Cognitive Therapy and the Emotional Disorders), David Burns (e.g., Feeling Good), and Martin Seligman (e.g., Authentic Happiness). As such, this highly readable book makes a major contribution to American "Cognitive Therapy." But while mainstream cognitive approaches are limited to diverse techniques for coping with irrational thoughts or troubling events, the Yogic approach described by Levine is comprehensive and holistic. I have began working with these ancient ideas and practices -- my early results suggest a potential to transform every aspect of one's life (mental, emotional, spiritual)!

『In a manner never before published, this book presents both Buddhism and Yoga and relates them to contemporary Western psychology. Although existing books begin with advanced concepts, such as emptiness or egolessness,The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yogabegins with very basic concepts and avoids the exotic and so called "mystical" notions. Levine emphasizes the goals of Buddhism and Yoga and the methods they employ to achieve those goals.

This book is divided into four sections. The first deals with Buddhism, the second with Yoga, and the third describes aims and practices in Western clinical psychology. The fourth section is a workshop on handling anger. The central lesson of the first three sections is that one can improve one's life by changing one's self. This fourth section applies this lesson and the methods of the three preceding sections to handling one's own anger. Overall the book is rich with Eastern tales and illustrative anecdotes. These concrete examples vividly illuminate the general conceptual presentation.

Levine shows not only the basic concerns of Buddhism and Yoga and how intensely practical their methods are but how these concerns and methods relate to those of modern Western psychology. Application to daily living is emphasized throughout.

The serious reader should start:
*to experience less anger, agitation, and stress;
*to improve relationships with coworkers, family, and friends; and
*to face life's challenges with greater wisdom and strength.

(Good reference for western practitioners)
『The Book of Yoga by Christina Brown is good for insights and revelations about getting the most out of your yoga practice. It has brief but in-depth readings on the philosophy, breath techniques, healing practices within hatha yoga or the yoga where you do asanas/positions. It also has excellent, clear pictures of asanas. The visualizations and healing yoga techniques are also very good.

Beginners who started out yoga as a physical exercise for stress relief and improving health can use this as a handbook to help them better comprehend what yoga is. It will expand the meaning of yoga and help them get more out of their practice.

Intermediate yoga practitioners can get some review and also new insights in this book. Again, quite excellent for those who practice yoga asanas and are really into the form and beauty of it, but now want to get more into the esoteric aspects of yoga practice.

For Yoga Teachers, especially those in Western civilizations, I recommend this book as a tool for words of wisdom, tips, insights to help your students better understand yoga philosophy and to help them get the most of their practice.

One thing, this book is not useful if you want more history on yoga and the many different types of yoga traditions there are. But it certainly gives a background on the yoga philosophy by explaining briefly the 8 Limbs of Yoga.

This is a book written and published in the United Kingdom and thus it has a different and newly enlightening way of interpreting, in english, the meanings of the 8 limbs of Yoga as interpreted in the USA.

In the back of the book are some visualization practices for meditation and some healing practices of yoga. All very good for beginners who want to get explore their practice of yoga further.

There is a chart in the back of the book that suggests a sequence of breath techniques and asanas for various ailments. This is great for teachers who want to customize a private class or for a targeted class. See the bottom of the contents brief for a peek at the chart contents.

(Good General Reference)
『The previous reviewers are far to hard on this book. There are a lot of interesting facts and images here that you won't find all in one place anywhere else. I could easily spend an hour or more jumping around to the different cross references that are provided with each entry. Within each entry he points the reader to other entries within the book by placing a asterisk beside the word. This denotes that you can find the entry listed separately in another location. All entries are alphabetical so finding things is no problem at all. Do you know what a Shiela-na-gig is? Or, how the Taoists viewed female sexual secretions? You'll learn this and more if you get this book. The bibliography is quite extensive and you'll get many ideas from there. Make sure to place a little mark beside them, because there are so many references, you won't remember which one you liked. If you get this used, you can't go wrong!』

(It's alright)
『It seems like it serves its purpose as a quick reference, but many of the entries are openly biased (i.e., male circumcision). I think anything by the title 'encyclopedia' should be able to deliver information without an agenda.』

(Great pictures; questionable research)
『There is one really good reason to get this book: the pictures. Almost 50% of the pages have coloar photographs of primarily Eastern art. However, pictures aside, Camphausen states his goals early in the book then does not see them through as well as he could. While there are many rare facts covered there are also very commonly known terms, deities, and objects included. Most terms do not have references so we can't tell where the information was found. The bibliography is done well but without references how can one truly do extra research? The index is completely worthless because it just lists things under general categories but not the pages they appear on; yes, the terms are alphabetically done but really, is putting a page number too much to ask? So if you want some great pictures, this is a good way to get them. Luckily the price is good just for the pictures themselves.』

(interesting book, but.....)
『Although this is an interesting book, it contains only heterosexual entries and articles. Therefore, I think it is better that the title of the book should be changed into "The Encyclopedia of Sacred Heterosexuality".』
