(yoga mala)
『This book is a must for ashtanga practitioners, having been written by the guru of this form of yoga, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. The forward by Eddie Stern provides an interesting background of the life of Pattabhi Jois and how he came to teach western students.
The opening chapter describes what is meant by 'ashtanga' (eight limbs) of yoga, with valuable information regarding yogic philosophy, lifestyle and dietary concerns, quoting from the ancient texts.
Following is a detailed description of the vinyasa/asana practice.
Ashtanga is a challenging and methodical practice of yoga, with emphasis on correct method; from the first sun salutation to the final resting position, there is exact placement of the gaze, the timing of the breath, and sequence of movement.
Those with an interest in yoga generally, or who practice a different form, may also find this book of value, since yoga is yoga and the ultimate "goal" is the same. It is my feeling, however, that without an existing practice and enthusiasm for this method, the book may seem a little dry in the last section.

I have had a copy with me for years, it is an invaluable reference.』

(Yoga Mala Book Review)
『The book arrived in perfect condition and in a timely manner.』

(Necessary for anyone practicing Ashtanga yoga)
『This book is a must for any Ashtanga practicioner. The beginning of the book describes the philosophy. The rest shows pictures of Jois and grandson Sharath in the poses as well as detailed explainations.』

(Great)
『Yoga Mala is written by a living legend with many years of practice and teaching experience. I would recommend this book only to those already familiar with Ashtanga, as parts of it will make no sense unless you are. Indispensable knowledge is interspersed with lovely throwbacks to earlier days in India, eg. the part where it is suggested a nice flat floor smeared with cow dung is essential to any good practice space. Gotta love it!』

(Good Ashtanga Book)
『I have a personal library of about 50 yoga books. This one is not one of my top ten, but it is a soild book. It's like the "Light on Yoga" of the Ashtanga world.

I wouldn't recommend this book unless you wanted a book specifically about Ashtanga, otherwise their are so many other better books on yoga. If you want a book about Ashtanga, then this and David Swenson's books are the best on that style of yoga.』

The seminal treatise and guide to Ashtanga yoga by the living master of this increasingly popular discipline

There is a yoga boom in America, and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is at the heart of it. One of the great yoga figures of our time, Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West a quarter of a century ago and has been the driving force behind its worldwide dissemination. Based on flowing, energetic movement, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it--have become the most widespread and influential styles of practice in the United States today.

Mala means "garland" in Sanskrit, andYoga Mala--a "garland of yoga practice"--is Jois's distillation of Ashtanga. He first outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline and explains its important terms and concepts. Next he guides the reader through Ashtanga's versions of the Sun Salutation and its subsequent sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides.
Brought into English by Eddie Stern, a student of Jois's for twelve years and director of the Patanjali Yoga Shala in New York City,Yoga Malawill be an indispensable handbook for students and teachers of yoga for years to come.

(Excellent!!)
『This was the first Kundalini yoga book I ever owned. It's a great beginner's book and has a lot of helpful and informative details. The content is very well rounded since it covers multiple aspects of living a Kundalini styled life. This is an excellent book and I definitely recommend it to anyone starting to practice this wonderful form of yoga!!!』

(Decent Book)
『This is a well written book offering superior knowledge on the history, practice, and health aspects related to yoga. The information is to the point and relevant. Likewise, the information on the spiritual side of the art is well worth the price of admission alone, but given the integral nature of the manual I hardly think you can go wrong if you are a beginning or serious student of the Art. Good book!』

(Great Introduction)
『This book was recommended by a good friend/teacher. Very easy to comprehend thorough introduction to Kundalini. Cannot replace an instructor but is a sufficient guide to assist you to confidently practice at home.』
『The first complete and fully illustrated guide to Kundalini available!

Kundalini comes from the Indian word kundal, which means "lock of hair from the beloved." The uncoiling of this "hair" is the awakening of the kundalini, the creative potential that already exists in every human. The yoga in this book is a sampling of the vast wealth called Kundalini Yoga. Here you learn about the branch of yoga based on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., who brought Kundalini Yoga from India to the West in 1969. Master yoga teacher and author Shakta Kaur Khalsa demonstrates how Kundalini Yoga works for everyday life and every person. You are not required to be in perfect physical shape or share any particular belief system. Kundalini Yoga works for you if you can breathe and move your body! In this type of yoga, the most important thing is experience. Your experience goes right to your heart, your core. These ancient teachings are designed to give you a hands-on approach to experiencing your deepest emotions and highest consciousness. By approaching Kundalini Yoga with openness and respect, and by following the steps included in this book, you can change and enrich your life.』

Dissatisfied with her job as a pharmaceutical rep and struggling with the decline of her long-term relationship, Grace, a well-heeled Londoner, uses yoga class to unwind, reflect, and momentarily transcend her earthly dilemmas. While pitching her company’s latest antidepressant to the disarming Dr. James, she is inspired by his plan to study Eastern medicine in Vietnam and decides to quit her job to become a yoga teacher.

After studying at the eccentric White Lotus Foundation in California, Grace returns to London, ready for her new life.  But nothing could have prepared her for the motley crew of students she amasses--from the octogenarian industrialist desperate for distraction, the supermodel who indulges yogic aspirations when she tires of kabbalah, to the American film star who uses yoga classes to conceal a scandalous affair.Overwhelmed, Grace soon finds herself relying on her bi-continental correspondence with Dr. James for solace and inspiration, his words hovering above her London life like a sweet promise.

With an eye for the absurdity in every encounter, Alexandra Gray gently skewers our society’s preference for a quick-fix nirvana in this chronicle of one woman’s quest for love and meaning in a world numbed by materialism and psychotropic drugs.

(Yoga Asanas are not the main Focus)
『As Westerners many of us are exposed to yoga as an exercise system. Here the very well versed author explains that the positions (asanas) of yoga were primarily to help focus on the meditation which is the true purpose of yoga. You will get a review of several of the major Yoga schools and a very good history of yoga. If you are looking for exercise or positions this is not the book for you BUT if you want to know a lot more about the origins and purpose of the yogic tradition it is an excellent overview.』

(What a find!)
『Yoga is a complex, deep, and broad subject, yet often skimmed over as a fitness exercise and therefore vastly misunderstood. For years I've been searching for a simple-to-understand, scholarly book written in such a way that anyone could understand the basics of Yoga. I wasn't sure such a book existed--but last week I found it. *Yoga: the Greater Tradition* by the Sanskrit scholar, Dr. David Frawley, is such a book--and what a book! I cannot praise it highly enough, and I recommend it to anyone who is curious to know about the hidden wealth of Yoga from the inside out. Pocket-size, beautifully done, only 112 pages, with information that incorporates the depth and practicality of Yoga. If amazon.com had such a scale, I'd award it 10 stars, not a mere 5.
Dr.Vimala Rodgers

(A must for anyone with even a passing interest in the art.)
『Yoga is not a religion in its own right, but it can help the faith of any believer of any sort. "Yoga: The Greater Tradition" is a complete and comprehensive guide to the practice in a small, portable form. Covering its history and its origin, it flows well into the customs and traditions of the practice and why things are done the way they are. With some speaking on the higher and more enlightened Yogis, "Yoga" is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in the art.』

(Revealing the true range and depth of Yoga)
『Dr David Frawley is a prominent scholar, practitioner and teacher of the Yoga Tradition. Yoga itself has spread all around the world in modern times, though the majority only know a fraction of what this tradition has to offer, preferring the physical aspect over the more inner spiritual teachings. Yoga, the Greater Tradition addresses this modern understanding that falls short of the full potential Yoga can offer.
This book is an eagle's eye view of the Yoga Tradition, and an introduction to the entire scope of Yoga, outlining its origins, philosophy and the various practices and paths available. It includes many leads for further exploration and provides guidance on how to navigate the world of Yoga towards its deeper, more profound aspects.
The book is beautifully designed with images, drawings and photographs, and has a natural, logical flow and structure that is easily understood by beginners, and still insightful for the experienced.』

As yoga continues to grow in popularity as a modern exercise and fitness movement, it is important to take notice of the greater spiritual tradition that forms its core. This book sheds light on the greater tradition and teachings of yoga, providing readers with an important approach to the practice that can harmonize their existence both individually and collectively.Yogaprovides all students with a new appreciation of their dicipline's universe.

(clear thinking of the Iyengar path)
『Doing yoga is not just for the sake of doing the asanas, but a way of getting deeper in perfectioning the movement through being in a process of discovery your innerself soul and body. Who reads The Tree of Yoga will be able to understand better what I am trying to share with you.』

(why I keep going back to this book)
『After more than 30 years of yoga practice and classes from expert teachers, I continue to look for the lessons that will take me beyond where I am today. I have read this book so many times and always find new lessons in it. The first time, I probably read it through in a couple of hours. Now, I keep it on top of a stack of frequently consulted works. Most mornings, here in Brooklyn (NY) in a winter that seems an object lesson in global warming, I turn to The Tree of Yoga in the first hour after wakening. This practice reminds me to consider the important lessons I might forget: my stage in life, the stages that came before, how short life is, what is happening today, the tendency of memory to distract the mind, the power of attention, the value of self-study, etc. And tomorrow, a new lesson, a new understanding, with the next passage read carefully in the pale light of a winter morning. This is a book that keeps on giving.』

(Great Iyengar book)
『This is a great book for the new and the familiar to yoga. This compilation of lectures is a more philosophical look at his yoga, unlike the more technical books Light on Yoga and Light on Pranayama. Although these last two are indispensible, in this book, Iyengar's love of yoga shines through his words. He develops the analogy of the eight limbs of yoga as a tree skillfully and beautifully. Really excellent!』

(A must read on yoga principles)
『While being an avid yoga practicioner, the first time I got to know anything about B.K.S. Iyengar was when I picked up this book. Since then, I have done much more reading by him. Tree of Yoga was wonderful in explaining some basic principles of yoga, and the concepts behind it. The book didn't go into explaining or documenting the various asanas (for that read Light on Yoga), but instead spoke of the history of yoga, the concepts, types, what it was about, etc.

I read this book within a night, and have reread it many times since then. It's simple and inspiring, and will forever be a part of my collection.』

(Light from one of the great teachers of yoga)
『B. K. S. Iyengar achieved an international reputation with the publication of his classic Light on Yoga in 1966, which today stands as the definitive work on hatha yoga, a work made distinctive not only by the 602 photographs of Iyengar himself demonstrating the various poses, but by the detailed manner in which they are explained. He was then 38-years-old. Since then he has written several other books on yoga and lectured widely while continuing his teaching practice. He is today recognized as one the greatest of all yoga teachers.

In this book, editor Daniel Rivers-Moore has taken it upon himself to construct a narrative by Iyengar, gleaned from lectures given by the master in Europe and India during the nineteen-eighties. Rivers-Moore has done an admirable job of bringing the voice of Iyengar to the many readers who have not had the opportunity to hear him speak. The continuity of expression is maintained throughout, and the book reads as though Iyengar wrote it himself.

One sees that Iyengar is speaking to teachers of yoga as well as students. The extended metaphor of yoga as a tree is an apt one since when our practice is strong we are like a tree, solid and unshaken by the vicissitudes of life. But it is only a metaphor, one of many used by Iyengar in his teaching practice. His metaphor is not related to what is one of the most profound metaphorical images in yoga, that of the tree upside down with its branches in the earth and its roots exposed to the sun. It is said that this is the way we will see the world after becoming firmly established in yoga. Much of what we once believed (as children and young adults), we will now disbelieve and embrace the very opposite.

The value of asana, pranayama, and meditation in preventing disease and maintaining health has been established beyond doubt, and is one of the great boons humankind has gotten from yoga, and is under no circumstances to be underestimated. However, I took Iyengar's prescriptions for the further medicinal value of yoga with the proverbial grain of salt, just as I take the ancient claims of superpowers developed through the practice of yoga. His is a way of speaking that is native to India and has a long and honored tradition in the literature. One recalls the miraculous claims of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Svatmarama and the Siva Samhita, in which all disease is cured, and understands that the authors are speaking in a symbolic and intentional manner. What is most interesting and valuable in this book are the chapters on meditation and pranayama, and on the advice and warnings that Iyengar extends to teachers of yoga.

Iyengar's yoga is the yoga of Patanjali, whom he reveres as "the noblest of sages." It is a yoga of discipline and dedication, a yoga of power and grace developed over at least several thousand years of practice. Of the four traditional yogas of India--bhakti, jnana, and karma--it is perhaps the oldest. It is certainly the one with the widest international application since it melds well into any and every way of life, from the monastery to the streets of the city.

Iyengar has been described by some as a teacher of physical yoga only--an unfair description that he recalls and rejects in two different places in this book. On the contrary he demonstrates here that he is also a master of raja yoga, and in particular a man who understands that the prerequisites of hatha yoga are essential to the achievement of samadhi.

Those who are familiar with Light on Yoga and Iyengar's other works, will find this volume a fine addition to their library and of value because of the light it sheds on the personality and understanding of one of the great teachers of the ancient art of yoga.

『Iyengar developed a form of yoga that focuses on developing strength, endurance, correct body alignment, as well as flexibility and relaxation. The Iyengar method integrates philosophy, spirituality, and the practice of yoga into everyday living. InThe Tree of Yoga,Iyengar offers his thoughts on many practical and philosophical subjects including family life, love and sexuality, health and the healing arts, meditation, death, and Patañjali'sYoga Sutras. This new edition features a foreword by Patricia Walden, a leading American teacher of the Iyengar style.』

(Great Pregnancy Yoga Choice)
『This is a pretty simple review in that I truly have benefited from this product. Initially I thought it didn't have enough regular yoga poses and had too much about posture and breathing and simple stretches and poses. Shortly into my pregnancy though I started to have quite bad lower back and butt pains, due to the baby being too low. I found that all of the breathing and more simple poses helped more than anything else could have. I strongly recommend this book for pregnant women looking for either something to help relax their body or something to help stretch out sore areas. I also loved some of the meditation mantras for when I was having a really tough day and was "frustrated" with being pregnant. Anyhow, if you have a difficult pregnancy at all this is definitely the book for you, or "deck of cards" should I say!!

(Prenatal Yoga)

Great, indepth and informative, but I need to extra incentive in a class not on my own. Great cards though!』

(Wonderful pregnancy gift)
『I have used this through two pregnancies and the cards are terrific. You don't need to be well-versed in yoga to appreciate them - they are written in "plain English" and are mainly stretches, breathing exercises, and meditations. You can pick and choose whatever you want to do and there is helpful guidance on each card about how to practice or adjust the exercise as you pregnancy progresses. Just doing 10 min a night makes a difference in how peacefully I can sleep at night.』

(Excellent for Childbirth Education Classes!)
『I love this deck! I am a certified childbirth educator and this prenatal yoga deck is one of my favorite resources for my classes. Almost every pose has specific pregnancy or labor/birth related benefits. I put together a series of 6-8 poses from the deck that I use as an opening exercise in my classes--people often learn better by actually *doing* something and practicing the yoga poses together allows experiential practice of pelvic floor exercises, pelvic rocks, tailor sitting, optimal fetal positioning exercises, etc. instead of just me talking! Also, I emphasize to my students that birth happens in your BODY--we will spend a lot of time talking and sharing information, but birth doesn't happen in your mind, it happens in your body. People today spend much of their time "living in their heads" and many of us do not feel comfortable with, or at home in, our bodies. So, practicing the poses from this deck in class helps couples out of their heads and into their bodies and begins a process of feeling comfortable with moving and using their bodies in positive ways--I hope this helps develop a trust and confidence that will then contribute to a smooth and peaceful birth process.

The deck also includes several nice, short meditations that serve as a nice closing exercise either for the whole class, or for the exercise portion of class.

I forgot one more nice feature! Each pose has a positive birth affirmation that goes with it--I love these, because I feel like they help plant positive seeds of confidence and trust in the wisdom of women's bodies and of the beauty of birth.

To conclude, I love this deck and I strongly recommend it for other childbirth educators!』

(Great Tool)
『The prenatal yoga deck is a real find. I had already owned several DVDs when I came across Miller's deck, but decided to purchase it anyway. I am glad I did. At about eight months, I could barely move and the deck enabled me to stretch at my own pace. Now that my baby has moved and I have more space, I still use the deck just about every night so I can continue my practice at my level. I highly recommend this product, and plan to purchase it for my friends who became pregnant in the future.』
『Yoga is an ideal way for expectant mothers to enhance overall health, cope with the physical demands of pregnancy, and prepare for labor and birth. (Practical advice, excellently presented)
『This is a great book for anyone who spends a lot of time at a computer, or just at a desk. Even if you have never done yoga before, this book will make your body feel better after a session in front of the screen. It's also a great reminder (and a good excuse!) to take breaks. Practical and clearly explained, this book should be required buying for every Human Resources department across the land. It will save companies a ton of lost employee time - and as they know, prevention is a whole lot better (and cheaper) than cure!』

(Easy to follow!)
『Reviewed by Kam Aures for RebeccasReads (4/08)

"The human body evolved to hunt and gather, to run and jump and climb, to play hard and rest fully - not to sit in front of a computer all day. Evolution has not kept up with the rapid changes of the technological age; we are simply not equipped to deal with all the requirements of modern life." (p. 15) Sitting at a computer for a prolonged period of time can wreak havoc on your body. Not only can it affect your back, neck, and shoulders but it can also be the cause of tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome among other things. In order to counteract the negative effects that heavy computer use can have on your body it is important to develop some sort of regular fitness regimen.

Throughout "Yoga for Computer Users," Sandy Blaine provides us with a variety of yoga poses along with detailed explanations and photographs showing how to perform them correctly. There are poses in the book that can be performed right at your computer desk at work and there are others that are for when you are away from your computer. Under each exercise's name is a list of what body areas this particular stretch will help to work. To receive the highest level of benefits Blaine advises us to take "at least two focused, 10-to-20 minute yoga breaks during the course of a full workday." (p. 25)

Being an avid computer user, this book was definitely geared toward me. Even though I had always wanted to, I had never tried yoga in the past. I found that the instructions and photographs that Blaine provided were very adequate in helping me to achieve the desired positions. There were some exercises that I could not fully do because my body just didn't stretch that way; but I am hoping in the future, with more practice, that I will be able to master them. With the short amount of time that I have been practicing the poses in "Yoga for Computer Users," I have noticed the benefits already, particularly in my neck and shoulders. I think this book would be beneficial to anyone who spends a lot of time on a computer or at a desk.』

(A must have for everyone!)
『Another great book from Sandy Blaine. Her first book, Yoga for Healthy Knees, was such a help, that I'm not suprised at how great this book is. Well written with easy to follow explanations of the postures. These sequences are easy to do anywhere. This book is sure to help me and my staff stay healthly and pain free in our daily lives.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who sits, drives, uses a computer, cell phone or PDA- just about all of us!』

(Add me to the chorus - simply a beautiful book!)
『Hundreds of large black and white photos of yoga poses. It's very simple, inspiring, and aesthetically pleasing! A great buy if you want to look at the beauty that is yoga!』

(lovely things of all)
『This book bring-mes inspiration for a life with full presence of God. This is a great gifit for all those want to be a success life in all areas of your life. Its a passion.』

(Common Yoga information, filled with MUMBO JUMBO)
『What bothers me is that Chopra seems to be completely confused on the subject of eastern philosophy. His knowledge on the subject is very superficial. He blends Advaita Vedanta with Raja Yoga, adds some Buddhism and comes up with his own seven laws of spirituality from the middle of nowhere. These branches of thought in fact all contradict each other, Chopra makes it seem like one big school of thought. That's perhaps the western romantic view of eastern philosophy. And of course, he fantasizes a little bit about chakras, the foundation subject of New Age bestsellers. The first half of this book is complete rubbish.

The only reason I rate this book two stars is the second half. It's a nice overview of some Asanas, meditation practises and Pranayama. But I do not recommend the book for this section. There are better books available on the subject. Even online, you will get the same information on Yoga Asana's for free. There are many good books on the subject of Hatha Yoga and also on the subject of different eastern philosophies and religions. Deepak Chopra is not a spiritual person, he is a marketer. Don't cheat yourself reading his crappy information.

(Excellent Reference Book)
『This book is an excellent reference for the true, pure form of yoga. It is something you come back to again and again, and mark up for future reference. I highly recommend it!』

(Chopra simplifies yoga)
『As with each of Chopra's books that I have read, his thoughts are extremely helpful at taking things and making them seem reasonable and simple. If you are already practicing yoga or thinking of starting, you need this book. Another book he wrote-"The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" is probably the best book you could ever put to use. I'm not a "new age" or "self-help" kind of guy but this dude is cool!』

(A Book of Many Insights)
『I chose this book because I was looking for help in returning to my practice of yoga. Deepak Chopra books always provided words of guidance. He did not fail in this attempt. He begins the book with insightful questions to help you find the real "you" and then progresses to explain the different types of yoga practices. But the real value in the book is the section discussing the Seven Spirtual Laws. For me, that alone was worth buying the book.

After many years of practicing yoga I now understand the importance of not forcing the body to obey moves but it is in allowing the inner Self to assist in all of the movements. There is a wonderful section on yoga positions with excellent photos and descriptions of how to attain the pose. Chopra also discusses meditation, how to practice it and methods for success.

This is a book I keep in my workout area and read each day before I begin my sessions. It is not only physically helpful, it is a spiritual inspiration.

『The remarkable benefits of yoga, which include improved flexibility, balance, muscle tone, endurance, and vitality, only hint at the extraordinary power of this deeply spiritual practice. When adhered to and practiced mindfully, yoga can unlock readers’ full creative potential, their capacity for love and compassion, and ability to find success in all areas of their lives. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yogabrings spirituality back to yoga. It shows how the Seven Spiritual Laws play a crucial role in yoga’s path to enlightenment while providing readers with a wealth of meditation techniques, mantras, breathing exercises, and yoga poses. Whether a newcomer to yoga or an experienced practitioner,The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yogais a portal to yoga’s deeper spiritual dimension and a beautiful step to a happier, more harmonious, and more abundant life.』
