I can see myself referring to it in the future quite frequently. The practices he uses are fairly easy, there are a few harder poses that your average practicioner won't be able to achieve but as long as the effort is put forward the benefits will be felt. I like the case studies presented. I did find the part on anatomy and the brain a little beyond my reach but I have no medical background so that isn't surprising. Overall this is a great book for anyone who wants to do or teach yoga therapy.』
(An essential tool for all serious yogis) 『This well-illustrated, detailed-explanation book has answered so many of my questions. The sequenced poses for specific problems are wonderful for a home-practice or for instructors to use in classes. In all cases, injury will be avoided by following Kraftsow's EXCELLENT advice. This should be in EVERY yogi's library and in constant use.』
(A great book for the yoga student and teacher) 『I got this book as a helpful reference for teaching yoga. Since I am a visual learner, I don't buy many yoga books, but this is one of my books that has lots of "dog ears" on its pages! I love that it has lots of pictures and graphically explains when to inhale and exhale during a sequence of postures. He also have a good sized section of the book devoted to yoga postures that help with chronic disease. I can tell the author has a great depth of knowledge about yoga and I feel I can learn so much from him and this book.』
(Everything you need to know abour yoga) 『This book gave the reader a very comprehensive view of the movements of yoga overall and then went on to give the reader movements which would help various ailments and diseases. Giving the reasons for different positions I think is important if you are serious about learning yoga.
Very good』
(The best for healing) 『I've purchased many copies of this book for friends who are involved with healing. It provides the yoga poses and complete yoga sequences for each needed type of healing. Presentation is clear and complete. And, even better, there is an excellent index.』 『A fully illustrated, step-by-step guide to achieve wellness through Viniyoga
Mainstream America is finally catching on to what Eastern countries have known for thousands of years--that yoga is not only a great, low-impact way to increase flexibility and reduce stress, it is also useful in healing any number of afflictions, from common aches and pains to chronic diseases and emotional setbacks. In this easy to follow guide for practitioners at all levels, America's leading teacher of Viniyoga emphasizes the physical as well as the spiritual components of healing through yoga. Beginning with a general introduction, he then includes case studies and specific yoga sequences designed to address individual ailments. Best of all, each step of each posture in a sequence is clearly illustrated with its own photograph. The exercises in this book are truly transformative and certain to help those searching for alternatives to mainstream medicine and those looking for a way of becoming more involved in their own physical well-being.

"Herein lies a gold mine of practical knowledge for enlivening all aspects of the physiology. It is a book worthy of study, which no doubt will enlighten the reader in unexpected ways each time it is opened." -- from the Introduction by Scott Gerson, M.D., The National Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine』 『There's more to yoga than stretching and bending and twisting. InYoga for Wellness, one of America's top yoga teachers gives a clinic on the holistic nature of yoga practice, especially in regard to healing and well-being. With over a thousand photographs, Gary Kraftsow covers the basic postures, the specific movements of each posture, and how to sequence postures in a routine. More importantly, he moves from form to function, showing how sequences of postures can alleviate ailments in each system of the body, from lower back pain to hypertension--even depression and multiple sclerosis. In case studies of his own clients, we see how Kraftsow's holistic approach has him recommending not only posture prescriptions, but breathing exercises, sound techniques, and visualizations, not to mention such commonly neglected wisdom as eating a healthy breakfast and getting closer to nature.Yoga for Wellnessis the rare yoga instruction manual that teaches the basics of yoga while also paying more than just lip service to the original intention of yoga--achieving a balance of mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.--Brian Bruya』

My husband and I listened to 20 minutes of the cd on a driving trip. We kept asking each other if a point had been made yet and what is she trying to say. Nothing. In reading the book, there is such a wounded hero here trying to prevent others from encountering the same misfortunes. If a yoga teacher, or for that matter any one in power, acts unethically, according to Socrates, did what they thought was the right thing at the time. We all know teachers, therapists, medical professionals who have acted unethically. Would reading a book change the outcome of unethical situations? No. This book is poorly written with so many pitiful autobiographic stories in it. Yoga Journal has succeeded in 2 pages what this book could not begin to cover. For most, yoga is a spiritual path and so ethics will reflect that. If you already have good ethics and common sense, and want to read something of value, try: Ben Benjamin, The Ethics of Touch, written for bodyworkers. The The Ethics of Touch: The Hands-on Practitioner's Guide to Creating a Professional, Safe and Enduring Practice』
(I love this book ...) 『Donna Farhi has written a very important text here - I am using it in my 200-hour yoga teacher training program. I used Donna's The Breathing Book to write a pulmonary rehab program and this book is an equally important one. Thank you, Donna, for writing such wonderful, useful, life-changing books.』
(Should be part of every teacher training) 『I have been unable to put this book down after two years teaching there is a lot that Donna talks about in this book which I have faced without the guidance and professionalism that I found in this book. It is exceptionally helpful and has helped me really think about the nature of teaching Yoga and how this impacts on the students and the world around me.』
(A must read for ALL yoga teachers and serious students) 『Anyone who is currently teaching yoga, or who has a desire to teach yoga, would greatly benefit from this beautifully written and most thorough work on the topic of teaching yoga. You will grow so much as a teacher and as person through these ethical inquiries. This book should be a required reading for teacher training programs. I also highly recommend all of Donna's books as well as her workshops and women's retreat. You can find her workshop schedule at www.donnafarhi.co.nz. Donna's books and workshops have been transformational. She has an amazing ability to make what were once abstract concepts become real and applicable to everyday life. Donna has touched so many lives. She has maintained the purity of yoga. Many western yoga teachers have lost this purity and it has become all about aquiring fame and fortune. Although Donna has aquired this fame, that has never been her goal. Her goal has always been to facilitate spiritual growth in her students. I am forever grateful to my beloved teacher.』

When you are willing to simplify and pare down to the essentials -- this is the meditation for you. Many layers, many doorways into why we make things so complicated, when really it comes down to our most simple and personal understandings. Richard Miller shares this understanding in the form of mental, physical, and emotional ease. We can directly experience this kind of ease. It can be that simple.』
(CD is good, but the book needs an editor.) 『Yoga Nidra may not necessarily be what some people are expecting. This form of guided meditation doesn't have you envisioning warm sunshine over the body or the sound of a babbling stream. Instead, you are guided through a series of sensing exercises as you examine the relationship between emotions and feelings and their effect on the body - eventually helping you to realize the duality created by the mind that ultimately causes suffering. For instance, you are asked to notice the constriction of the heart as you think about a time when you felt closed off to a person or situation. Then you are guided away from being directly in those feelings, observing them instead. I've been practicing this for some time in the form of vipassana meditation, and Yoga Nidra is a nice supplement to that practice.
The CD is very well produced and Richard Miller's voice and pacing are quite good. His instructions are clear, without talking too much. Some meditation CDs are very wordy to the point of distraction, but this one isn't like that.
However, the book that comes with the CD is in desperate need of an editor. I'm a yoga teacher and generally used to reading flowery material, but this one goes over the top. I found myself reading and rereading sentences trying to cut through all the adjectives to get to the meaning. I think Richard Miller's points are often lost in his overly descriptive text. A good editor would do this book a great deal of service.
I don't think you necessarily need the book to get something from the CD. However, it is useful to understand what the meditation is all about b/c it isn't the same as other forms. It's a shame that his text makes the practice seem overly involved. As such, it took me an extra few weeks to get around to listening to the CD b/c the book made it seem like the meditation was going to be a lot of work.
My advice is to listen to the CD and THEN read the book, even though Richard Miller says otherwise.』
(Book is helpful tool for insomniacs) 『I am a 60-year-old woman who has struggled with severe insomnia since her mid-twenties. I have used many strategies to help with this, some with more success than others. This book and CD have been very useful tools for me. It's emphasis is a form of meditation that you can take with you into your daily life. I have only been practicing it for a month now (although I have long practiced yoga) with very promising results.』
(Very relaxing) 『Richard Miller has a very relaxing and soothing voice, making the cd that accompanies this book very enjoyable. It has helped me take the next step in my yoga journey.』
(Pure New Age) 『I give the book 2 stars but the accompanying disc was a waste. A very poor Yoga Nidra experience.』 『One of the most enjoyable parts of a yoga class comes when we rest in savasana?the ?corpse? pose?and realize deep serenity, a sense of eff ortless joy, and a glimpse into our true nature as unqualified presence. How is this so? Master teacher Richard Miller explains that this experience is a manifestation of yoga nidra, the meditative state of mind-body union at the heart of all yoga practice. A powerful integration of book and CD audio learning, Yoga Nidra is an ancient tantric yoga path that leads to inner freedom. Th rough accessible language appropriate for any level of practice, Miller takes us step by step through the traditional techniques of relaxation and meditation to help us move toward the realization of ?unqualified presence??the ultimate aim of yoga?a goal unreachable through posture practice alone. Through his expert guidance, students will experience: ? Deep relaxation for relief from day-to-day stress ? The development of ?one-pointedness??a key to spiritual awakening ? Healing from painful emotions, such as fear, grief, and anger ? More eff ective and energizing sleep, and much more Suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners?but new to most Westerners?Yoga Nidra provides an unmatched way to experience the culmination of the art of yoga, and the deeper physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards that are its promise.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Use of Professional Athletes Oversells Basic Concepts) 『Full disclosure - I am a complete newbie when it comes to yoga. This probably explains why I picked up this book in the first place - an experienced yoga practitioner probably doesn't need to turn to a book for guidance.
But as a newbie, I can highly recommend this book for its easy-to-understand yet comprehensive walk-through of basic yoga.
At first, I was turned off by the use of famous professional athletes in this book. I prided myself on being from a more cynical generation than my parents, where they bought Mr. Coffee because Joe DiMaggio was its spokesman. So I was bit turned off by the prominent photos of Eddie George and Dan Marino, to name but two of the prominent athletes depicted in this book. I'm well aware that pro athletes will do anything for a buck, so their pictures in the book did nothing to impress me.
But then I read the book, and the athletes' testimonials started to make sense when I started to understand the exercises described in its pages. And thanks to those thorough - yet basic! - explanations, I have been able to start my first yoga routines.
And that's saying something, because I'm the last guy that anyone would expect to pick up yoga - stiff as a board, father of two young girls with no free time whatsoever.
But this book worked for me. It lays out reasonable explanations of why I should do these exercises. No mysticism, no tapping into my inner being, just good plain common sense - even in the section about meditation!
If you're an experienced yoga practitioner, this is probably not the book for you. But if you're a guy and you're looking to give yoga a shot, this is one of the better books you can pick up. It's educational, cautious (no "You'll look better and start turning heads in 10 days!" promises), and yet optimistic about the benefits yoga can provide to the average American male who gives it a try.
All in all, well worth the investment.』
(Gift idea gone bad) 『I gave this as a gift. He never used it. It may be a great product but I will never know.』
(Great motivator) 『After reading the other reviews, and looking inside the book, I knew this wasn't going to have as many different postures or routines as other books. I hoped to get some motivation to practice more regularly and I did get that. Just reading about the many benefits to making a yoga routine a regular part of your life got me motivated to practice almost every day. Right now I'm lucky of I do 30-45 mintutes a day, six days a week, but even with that little practice, I'm seeing a difference in the way I feel.
It feels good to be getting looser. I don't know whether I'll ever be able to do the lotus or even half lotus, and to be honest I'm not ever going to try crossing my legs behind my head. (I am trying to talk my wife into that one, however.)
Anyway, Real Men Do Yoga is a good book if you are looking for motivation and for proof that it is possible to get strong using yoga although not the same kind of strength you get from lifting. It is not a book with comprehensive routines.』
(He's happy!) 『I purchased this book for my boss. He was a little thrown in the beginning, knowing that he isn't able to compete at the level these men are, but....he's still happy with the book itself!』
(A Pictures Worth 200 Words) 『It's tricky to learn yoga from a book, especially when limited to sporadic black&white shots every other page. the book does a good job of taking someone mildly athletic who has never done yoga (me) through a few good stretches. There are some great flexibility-improvers. Plus, I liked the quotes and inspiration from the top jocks.
Plus - how did they get Eddie George on the cover?!?! What a great selling idea. If he and his atlas quads can do this stuff, I ought to be able to . . .』 『
With its revolutionary approach to yoga and innovative, male-oriented instruction,Real Men Do Yogawill be the definitive guide for both novice and veteran men who are discovering the innumerable physical and mental benefits of yoga.
Satisfying the male fascination with sports and admiration for athletes are interviews with more than twenty pros, all of whom are enthusiastic yoga practitioners: football's Eddie George, Shannon Sharpe and Amani Toomer; baseball pitchers Barry Zito (2002 Cy Young Award winner) and Al Leiter, star hockey goalie Sean Burke and NBA superstar Kevin Garnett as well as pro golfers and tennis players.
Photos of sports stars doing yoga, such as football greats Dan Marino and Chris Carter, drive home a powerful message. Each chapter offers a combination of stretches and strength-builders that target and benefit specific areas:
Conquering back pain (which afflicts an estimated 10 million men)
Improving sports performance including yoga for golf, running, basketball, tennis and more
Increasing flexibility in the upper body, spine and lower body
Building muscle strength
Improving sexual performance
In a sea of yoga books aimed at women,Real Men Do Yogais an easily accessible, "non-New Agey" guidebook that takes something mysterious to American men and offers a reassuringly effective and practical guide that they'll actually use.

I have been practicing yoga for over 5 years and teaching for over 2 1/2 years. I keep rereading this book so I can have the knowledge and experience from this book embedded in my body and brain. I have highlighted, underlined, bookmarked many pages in this book to share with my yoga students. I could not say enough about this amazing book.』
(Pure Fluff) 『Not to be too negative, but from my angle, this book contains nothing of substance. It's Farhi's journal entries for a period in her life (as far as I can tell) that add nothing of value to the discussion of or learning of yoga. Save your money.』
(A Real Gem) 『I really treasure my copy of Donna Farhi's "Bringing Yoga to Life." No matter how many times I've read it, I can always pick it up and glean some new insight or perspective from any passage. Her writing reflects genuine depth, wisdom, and experience, and she has a real gift for expressing sentiments that we intuitively realize but may not yet be able express ourselves. Note that this is not your typical manual of physical postures (there are certainly plenty of those available), but a very unique work that speaks to the process of integrating one's practice into daily life (which is what yoga is really about). Highly recommended.』
(Donna Farhi Takes Yoga Beyond The Asanas To It's Depths) 『Donna Farhi is one of the most knowledgeable, sincere, interesting and open minded Yoga teacher/writers that I am aware of, and she has given all of us the gift of another wonderful book.
Her deep and profound knowledge of all aspects of Yoga, both from a Physical and Spiritual perspective is always apparent in her writing and anyone can reap benefits from her books no matter what style (or styles) of yoga you embrace, as she is not bound by any one school of yoga.
In "Bringing Yoga To Life" Donna Farhi goes beyond the postures and moves deeply into the heart of yoga, the practice of yoga in one's day to day life.
Still, you can also bring your actual physical practice of Yoga "to life" by incorporating an awareness of the 8 limbs. This will help you deepen and internalize your asana practice.
This is one of many excellent books that have recently surfaced that take Yoga beyond the postures and show how it can have a profound relevance to real life, beyond the work one does on their sticky mat (or mysore rug). Among these other books I highly recommend "Yoga And The Quest For The True Self" by Stephen Cope, "Yoga and the Path Of The Urban Mystic" by Darren John Main and Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy by Michael Lee.

(Questions answered) 『Soon after practicing yoga and finding myself changing in strange and remarkable ways, I felt I needed a book that might explain the less obvious "benefits" of yoga other than physical fitness. I now read a chapter or two of this book every night and so far I have the feeling that I am conversing with a very wise, benevolent, and understanding teacher. Donna Farhi has a way of communicating exactly what I, at least, have been wondering and feeling about me, my yoga practice, and life. I will send this book to my closest friends.』 『
Internationally renowned and bestselling author Donna Farhi moves yoga practice beyond the mat into our everyday lives, restoring the tradition's intended function as a complete, practical philosophy for daily living.
Expanding upon the teachings of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the core text of the yoga tradition, Donna Farhi describes yoga's transforming power as a complete life practice, far beyond its common reduction to mere exercise routine or stress management. This is the philosophy of yoga as a path to a deeper awareness of self. Drawing upon her years of teaching with students, Farhi guides readers through all the pitfalls and promises of navigating a spiritual practice.
Farhi's engaging and accessible style and broad experience offer important teachings for newcomers and seasoned practitioners of yoga alike. And because her teachings of yoga philosophy extend into every corner of daily life, this book is an equally accessible guide to those seeking spiritual guidance without learning the pretzel bendings of the physical practice itself. As one of the top teachers worldwide, Farhi's exploration of the core philosophy of yoga is destined to become an instant classic.

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (misrepresentation of the gospel) 『First off, the Bible isn't hiding anything. There are messages, but what we need to know isn't hidden, and definitely not found through PY. Second, look at the front cover. It quotes Luke 17:21 as Jesus says "The Kingdom of God is within you." Now this quote is not misrepresentation, as even the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures state this verse basically the same way. BUT the verse is taken out of context as to what Jesus was saying as a WHOLE. Before this passage, the pharisees were asking when the kingdom of God was coming. Jesus replied, "the kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say "here it is" or "there it is" because the kingdom of God is within you." Yes it says that the kingdom of God is within us, but it is not saying that we ARE the kingdom of God, or we can FIND God within OURSELVES. Jesus is answering the pharisees by saying that the kingdom of God (our salvation) isn't something we can literally SEE on this earth, but have IN our hearts. It is not the kingdom of God that is IN the pharisees, as they are unbelievers, but it is meant in a general sense that when we do "see" or "have" the kingdom of God, it is within US (our hearts), not outside in some certain place on earth. It is not something outside of us that the pharisees will literally see, but something we have inside of us. It blows the verse way out of context when you say we can look within and find that we are the same as Christ. Our salvation comes from Christ alone, and nothing from within ourselves. You would have to ignore the rest of what the Bible said to believe that we are the same as Christ or could ever achieve that same status as Him. Ephesians 2:8-9 "for it is by grace you have been saved-through faith and this is NOT FROM YOURSELVES, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast." 2 Timothy 1:8-9 "..join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time." The salvation of Christ is IN us as believers, but it is NOT US. We CANNOT save ourselves or look to ourselves to find God. To be saved, we must place our COMPLETE faith in the power, promise, and forgiveness of Christ alone, as Christ was, is, and will be our only Lord and savior. Jesus Christ is knocking on our hearts, and we have to let him in. He is not in there already for us to find and become. He is in us when we are saved by faith in Him, and we grow to be more LIKE Him, but He is NOT us...don't let PY tell you otherwise. this subtle change completely skews who Christ really is in the Bible.
2 Peter 2:1-2 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them-bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth in to disrepute."』
(Puts Jesus' teachings/life in proper perspective) 『Very simply, it explains what happenned to Jesus after he went "east" and came back teaching something very different. It puts Jesus' teachings/life in proper perspective.
I only gave four stars because the book is really a primer for the author's giant book: Second Coming of Christ. So you jump around a bit.
Just say it is a primer for another book on the cover.』
(Not quite a home run, but a stand up triple!!) 『While I would agree that this book is of very high value, it seems to me that a lot of great topics were glossed over and didn't reach the depth of insight that I have come to know and love from Paramahansa Yogananda. My opinion is a bit biased, as I own and am currently reading his most elegant tome: "The Second Coming of Christ," which is quite detailed and has an abundance of depth to it. "The Yoga of Jesus" is of course a watered down version of "Second Coming" and is certainly well worth the time if you want a quick study, that is; "How Sri Yogananda Interprets Jesus - 101" kind of thing. It will definitely get you thinking, with quite a few "ah-ha!" moments. I strongly recommend you read "The Yoga of Jesus" before "Second Coming." A 4 star recommendation today!』
(Yoga of Jesus) 『Great book written by a great man. It has renewed my perspective on Christ (original perspective was that of a Catholic who received First Communion in a French church in Rabbat Morocco, and later attended Catechism in Southern Spain as child). The author, Yogananda, really taps into the beauty and truths that I always suspected were the things that all religions had in common.』
(Lotus Guide Magazine Review) 『As an avid reader of Gnostic teachings, I found The Yoga of Jesus to be a breath of fresh air in understanding some of the deeper meanings found in the gospels that have been all but forgotten in modern interpretations. Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide magazine (lotusguide.com)』 『In this remarkable book, Paramahansa Yogananda reveals the hidden yoga of the Gospels and confirms that Jesus, like the ancient sages and masters of the East, not only knew yoga but taught this universal science of God-realization to his closest disciples.
