The instructions are clear and the breathing flows nicely, though it's probably not recommended for people who are brand new to yoga, where visual cues would be helpful. The yoga nidra and pranayama sections are superb. I have almost all of Shiva Rea's yoga CDs and would definitely recommend them all.』
(a beautiful discovery) 『I have been a yoga practitioner my entire life (a long time) and this is a lovely addition to my regular class schedule. It allows me to do a guided practice in a hotel room or rooms of my house without a tv screen. The music provides a soothing, spiritual background.』
(Open Your Heart) 『It is unfortunate that I have only done this workout twice before I injured my rotator cuff (not due to the workout)! I was a little apprehensive about useing a cd but now that I have I find it a wonderful experience. I am able to go a little deeper "within" than I do with a dvd. This is probably because I don't have any attention directed toward a screen! I found the practice to be solid and the OM and kirtan chanting awesome. Not for beginners of course. My shoulder is just about healed and I will be so happy to regularly practice with Shiva again.』
(Great guided work-out) 『Shiva Rhea successfully delivers again with this voice-guided yoga work-out. Intense enough to work up a sweat, but also flexible enough to accomodate both intermediate and advanced practicers. I also enjoyed the background music that is played throughout. You will definitely need to be familiar with yoga postures and their names in order to benefit from this CD. It's best to start off doing yoga with a live instructor anyway. If you are intermediate to advanced, this is a nice rounded out practice that you can do at home. I highly recommend it.』
(Balanced Sequence for the Experienced Practitioner) 『Don't be put off by the title - foremost this CD set offers a well-rounded flow of asanas that are complemented by the chanting at the end of the second CD. Jai Uttal's music is ideal accompaniment. Rea has, as usual, designed the tracks to be accessible for different needs - length of time, type of practice, time of day, etc. I especially apprecite the gems of poetry (Hafiz) and thought (Upanishads) she has interspersed with her instruction. Altogether a worthwhile purchase!』 『The journey of all yogas, in every tradition, leads us to a single destination: an open and loving heart connected to the Source. On Yoga Chant, instructor Shiva Rea and acclaimed world music artist Jai Uttal guide yoga lovers into a transformative "inner yoga" practice of the heart to experience: Chant (kirtan)– India’s ecstatic sacred sound tradition for opening ourselves to love and devotion, Postures and Movements (asanas) in a flowing sequence to expand the chest and rib cage, and release the physical and emotional "armoring" of daily stress, and Meditation and Breathwork (pranayama) – specificmeditations and breathing cycles to nourish the heart center with prana (vital life energy).』

Check out the plus size woman on pg 113 doing the alley cat--and the old lady with the huge behind and jowls. i suppose it's not very pc but this motley collection of flabby people encased in spandex does not project an image of health and vitality. not very inspiring.』 『“Doug Swenson has created a book about Yoga that captures his delightful and unique teaching style.” —Karen Allen, actress, Yoga Practitioner

Usually ships in 2 to 4 weeks IPhone 3G used's review (vapid and shallow) 『I expected something a little more complex and deep... the descriptions of the foreign characters are all stereotypical of what Indian people think of them - vapid, shallow, sexually promiscuous, and stupid. Unfortunately, the protagonist in each of the stories meets most of these stereotypes. Descriptions of the Indians fall almost exclusively into the type that is perceived to be "beautiful and intense", or the type that wants to scam foreigners. Both of these descriptions too are shallow and lack depth. As an Indian person myself who has spent many years in India as well as the US, I am quite offended at the sterotypes made of the Indians, as well as the foreigners (I know plenty of non-vapid foreigners who have lived in India as expats). For all the years that the cover of the book claimed Maura Moynihan lived in India, she could have written much better stories.』
(Takes you to India.) 『I've been to India several times, and have a few Indian friends. Moynihan's stories show an insider's knowledge of the country. Read wherever you like and you'll immediately be transported to India.
The expat characters are funny, delicious, and anyone who has lived the expat life in Asia will recognise them.』
(expat India captured) 『I read the original version of this short story collection published in India. I loved every story. Maura Moynihan captures the uniqueness of expat life in India and the relationships between Indians and Western expats perfectly. On top of that the writing is simply splendid on its own, hence these stories are well worth reading just for the language even if you don't have a strong interest in India.』 『
In the 1970s, Maura Moynihan moved to New Delhi with her mother and father, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who at the time was U.S. ambassador to India. She wasfascinated by the country's contradictions: ancient religions amid urban chaos, the staggering disparity between rich and poor, and Indian familial tradition and the lure of Western novelty.
From three decades of deeply sympathetic observation came the inspiration for these stories, in which the characters' beliefs are challenged as they interact with those outside their culture. British and American expatriates mingle with Indian friends, colleagues, and servants, and the stories follow the change, or failure to change, that results. Hari, a young Indian servant, hopes for his amiable British boss's help in escaping a prearranged wedding. An American embassy worker named Melanie becomes disillusioned when her married lover uses her to get a visa. At a Himalayan retreat, a wealthy group gathers to seek spiritual enlightenment, but their altruism is tested when they are asked to buy dowries for a poor Indian family.
Through witty dialogue and engaging scenes, Moynihan examines how both easterners and westerners struggle for dignity. Replete with humor and poignancy,Yoga Hotelis a stunning literary debut from a writer who understands the complexity and universality of human hopes, fears, and desires.
IPhone 3G used's review (My favorite first book of yoga for children) 『Just as it is titled, this is a good first book of yoga for children. It is written so one can look at the easy-to-follow directions to get going or take more time and read the detailed tips on how to get the most from each yoga pose.』 『Using cheerful illustrations, simple text, and clear photos, "A Yoga Parade of Animals" shows kids how to assume the shape of their favorite animals--each of which corresponds to a basic yoga position. The book is boring, is right in the grooves of traditions despite his references to J. Krishnamurti who was entirely non traditional.』
(This book has more pluses than minuses) 『I am enjoying this book very much. I would recommend to to anyone who already has some knowlege of the spiritual side of yoga. It is also great for comparissons to different and parellel spiritual paths. It allows for a great understanding of yoga, no matter what your personal background may be. However, i don't like the high integration of sanskrit terms. The book will define a term then use it again and again amongst other sanskrit terms that it has previously defined. Although it is important to learn these terms, it takes away some of the messege for me because I am continuously having to go back and relearn meanings.』
(I Love this book!!) 『If you have read or would like to read The Sutras of Pantanjali and the Bhagahad Gita this is a great companion book to pull the two philosophical books together..oh, and apply yoga to everyday life. I'd recommend reading the last chapter first, it was recommended to me and I am to really apply the "everyday yoga" to my life and my journaling. I highly recommend this boo.』
(Historical background of the yoga tradition) 『Very interesting book with a lovely overview regarding genuine philosophical thought in relation to yoga. Perfect reminder that yoga is much more than health providing gymnastics !!』 『
Rather than a hatha how-to guide with asanas and step-by-step instructions,The Spiritual Roots of Yogaexplains yoga’s origin and underlying philosophy. The book dives straight to the heart of the yogic tradition embodied in the figure of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, an understanding broadened through an examination of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. It then provides the framework for an accessible comparison between yoga and Christian, Buddhist, and other systems of thought. The author of several acclaimed interfaith studies, Ravi Ravindra writes from a deep understanding of not only the philosophy but the context from which yoga evolved, as well as its standing within the community of religious thought and practice, offering practitioners and other spiritual pilgrims a deeper appreciation of the tradition.

"A Meeting of Mystic Paths: Christianity and Yoga" is Justin O'Brien's desire to combine the two disciplines in creating a more complete spirituality. The two, although at first sight very different, there is much in common with them despite thousands of miles and thousands of years difference in origin. With the idea that Jesus himself may have heard some of the ideas of Yoga makes "A Meeting of Mystic Paths" a fresh set of ideas, sure to interest even those who don't follow Yoga or Christianity. 』 『A Meeting of Mystic Paths is the most important book for Christians in the present age– a path-breaking look at Christian spirituality and the mystery of Christ in light of the 5000-year-old tradition of yoga spirituality. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (A brilliant book!) 『What can a simple seeker say of a book written by one of the greatest Sages of India in the last century? As all probably know that Swami Sivananda Ji Maharaj taught the path of yoga to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, through His simple and practical books. His sole goal was to eradicate the suffering from the lives of the multitudes by showing them the way back to God or Eternity!
Through His own exemplary conduct He taught lessons in divinity through service to fellow man. So many of His disciples returned to their eternal state through realizing the Self or Atman (soul). In turn, these divine saints traversed the globe with His message of God and uplifted numerous people out of this ocean of samsara (wheel of birth, life and death).
He made His message available to all through the 300 or so books He wrote. All of His books are simple, direct and easy to follow for the earnest seeker. Taken together they form a very sure path for spiritual upliftment, good health, love and peace. If one follows His works, one can be assured that one's life will be transformed in due time -- of this you can be certain as the Sun will rise tomorrow. His methods and teachings are fail proof!
I used to be in a very poor way -- healthwise, mentally and emotionally. However, after I started to follow His practical methods about 6 years ago, ALL of my problems have gradually solved themselves. Since He was a God realized Sage, He is ever present! Hence His grace will surely uplift anyone who puts His writings into practice. I assure you that you will be successful in all your endeavors if you apply His methods in the various systems of yogas! May His blessings bring you success in all of your efforts.

Usually ships in 24 hours 『The word 'yoga' conjures up in the minds of many Westerners images of people performing exercises and adopting unusual, sometimes contortive postures. Such exercises and postures do have a place within the practice of yoga, but it is much more than that. Indeed, the early literature on yoga describes and defines it as a form of mental rather than physical discipline. Yoga is also associated with the Indian subcontinent and the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. This book therefore concentrates on the evolution of yoga in the context of Indian culture, though the final chapters also explore some of its links with non-Indian mystical traditions and some of its developments outside of India during the modern period. The book is aimed at both university students taking courses in Comparative Religion and Philosophy and practitioners of yoga who seek to go beyond the activity and explore its spiritual dimensions. Hence, it presents yoga in the context of its historical evolution in India and seeks to explain the nature of its associations with various metaphysical doctrines. The work also draws upon a number of conceptual schemes designed to facilitate comparative study. Some of these are employed throughout the book so as to link the material from each chapter together within a common framework.』

As is probably common, I was doing many of the poses only semi-correctly. There is a lot of reading to be done here, but there is incredible detail to help anyone elicit the poses correctly. Dworkis also divides each pose for beginner, moderate, and advanced. After a particularly tough day of running and 5 sets of tennis, I followed the poses and felt refreshed, relaxed, and loose afterwards. The workout is also really only 20 minutes (after learning the poses) and fun to complete as well as challenging when striving for a more advanced level.』
(As an exercise physiologist certified fitness instructor...) 『As an exercise physiologist and certified group fitness instructor/personal trainer I highly recommend this book. I have been hesitant to try yoga because of the contraindicated moves (called poses), however this book makes the necessary modifications so that the program is safe, yet still effective and fun. I have looked at many yoga books, and even more videos and classes and this is my favorite. I actually recorded (audio) myself reading some of the descriptions of the poses so that I could do the entire sequence with someone to "cue" me with the appropriate instructions!』 『The gentle yet rigorous discipline of yoga has been used for thousands of years to condition the body and relax the mind.
