If you practice Ashtanga yoga, then you are undoubtably already familiar with the Moola Bandha, or "root lock." If not, a little background is in order. In Indian yogic lore, this is the most important of the Bandhas (tightening of the areas of the body related to the location of the Chakras). The yogis believe substantial health and psychic benefits are to be gained through the practice. It is my opinion that practicing the Moola Bandha has greatly enhanced my yoga practice.
This book is divided into two parts. Part one focuses on the benefits of the Moola Bandha practice, while part two covers various poses and techniques for working the Moola Bandha.
As a relative new comer to yoga, I found this book to be intelligently written, insightful and practical. Recommended.』
(Moola Bandha: A "lock" that liberates) 『Moola Bandha: The "Lock" That Liberates
The author of this tome, Swami Buddhananda, is a former physician and psychiatrist. Realising the limitations of traditional pyschotherapy and western medicine, Swami Buddhananda began a decade-spanning search for a more widely-available, practical and effective method to reintegrate the body, mind and spirit of his patients and a suffering and benighted humankind.
Experimenting with a wide range of western and eastern-derived therapies including the techniques of acupuncture, manipulative therapy and herbal medicine, his quest culminated in his discovery of yoga and its healing powers. This little volume is one of the results of that quest.
Moola bandha (the "perineal lock") is a yogic technique intended to manipulate the flow of energies in the pranic body by closing off their nethermost channel in the Moolachakra region, via a dilation and contraction of the muscular structure around the perineum. This was one of the approaches taught by the author's guru, and prompted the author to undertake an intensive theoretical and clinical study on the practice, an important aspect of both hatha and kundalini yogas.
Moola bandha is a simple, easily learned yet powerful practice with a host of benefits - spiritual, mental and physical - for its practitioner. It is such a beneficial practice that one is left wondering at the reasons for the paucity of literature on the topic.
This book delineates the anatomical, physiological, endocrinological, neurological and psychic effects of Moola Bandha in clear, easily understood text supplemented where necessary by illustrations. Of particular interest to this reviewer was the attempt to relate the effects of Moola Bandha practice on the body with those of acupuncture, which chapter alone is worth the price of the book.
I ushesitatingly recommend Moola Bandha: The Master Key to every yoga student, practitioner and teacher and anyone with an interest in natural approaches to the healing of body, mind and spirit.』
(Excellent - suitable for all levels.) 『This book is a gem... easy to use while doing the practise.. and a great reference for modifications to specific asanas.
Also, I found the comments provided for some poses to be especially helpfull - they are short and to the point.』
(A Little Treasure) 『A very important book for Yoga practitioners in general and for Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and Pranayama practitioners in particular.Clearly explains Moola Bandha, it's anatomical and physiological aspects as well as neurological and endocrinological viewpoints. It relates the bandhas to the chackras,to Kumbhakas and asanas and describes the pranic effects. It also has a big practice section, which after all is the heart of the matter.A must have for serious practitioners, who will probably find themselves returning to the pages of this small book very often.』 『Moola Bandha - the Master Key is for those dedicated yoga practitioners researching for the master key to unlock the abode of maha kundalini. Little has been written about the ancient practice of bandha, which is regarded as an important aspect of both hatha and kundalini yoga. Moola Bandha is a simple yet dynamic practice with profound physical, mental and spiritual benefits for the practitioner.
The text focuses on the theory and practice of bandha. The physical, pranic and psychotherapeutic effects are explored, including the relationship between moola bandha and acupuncture. A concise practical section includes both preliminary practices and advanced techniques to enable the practitioner to pursue this sadhana to the utmost, thus awakening the primal energy within. Includes the drawings and diagrams.』

I wasn't sure if I would like having yoga on a CD but am now glad I purchased it. I love simply listening to a soft voice and music (rather than having to watch a video) just before retiring. Yoga Zone found Alan Fingers focuses on how to incorporate yoga into your life both on and off the mat by teaching basic asana (posture) sequences as well as simple self-growth exercises.
In the segment on "Reducing Stress," Finger reviews the nine impediments to yoga practice (from the Yoga Sutras), provides guidelines on how to practice yoga anywhere, and offers a beginning-level asana sequence (17 total poses) for stress relief. The next section of the book, "Moving Yoga Off the Mat," introduces other concepts from the Yoga Sutras, such as behavior couplings. Finger also talks here about how your five senses can influence your yoga practice and provides suggestions for stimulating each area.
The chapter on "Discovering the Self" presents additional information on ancient yogic concepts, including the koshas, or sheaths that make up the self, and the chakras, the seven energy centers of the body. Again, Finger suggests strategies for connecting these traditions with your asana practice, and he also offers an asana series for finding your core. This 18-pose sequence includes breathwork and is slightly more challenging than the first yet still at a beginning level. The final two chapters, "Finding Balance" and "Restoring the Body," provide information on kara/dharma as well as the yamas/niyamas. The book concludes with a restorative asana series--four poses held for lengthy periods of time.
I've been practicing yoga regularly for about 4 years now and consider myself to be an intermediate yogini. I found this book to be somewhat below my level, as the asana sequences consisted of very basic postures and I had already familiarized myself with most of the philosophical information. Still, I enjoyed reading this book; it provided me with a nice review of the yogic concepts, and the practices looked to be soothing and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this guide to any level of yoga practitioner who is looking to take their practice beyond the mat.』 『Yoga practice only begins on the mat. As people continue to turn to this ancient wellness tradition to stay strong, reduce stress, and find inner peace, the greatest challenge is to carry the valuable principles of yoga into everyday life. Picking up where his bestsellingYoga Zone Introduction to Yogaleft off, yoga master Alan Finger expands on this wisdom inYoga Zone Yoga for Life.
Intermediate practice does not simply involve more difficult poses, it includes a deepening of understanding and self-knowledge. It also means using the tenets of yoga to alleviate daily tension and stress: employing a concentrated breathing exercise to calm nervous jitters before a presentation, for instance, or drawing awareness to muscular pain and natural breathing and posture tendencies during a trip to the grocery store.
With asana sequences (poses) and breathing and meditation exercises from the highly personalized ISHTA school of yoga taught in Yoga Zone’s classes and Alan Finger’s studios,Yoga Zone Yoga for Lifeexplores the core principles of yoga using accessible language. Explanations of the concepts of karma and dharma and the chakras, and their value in discovering the truest self, make this enlightening manual the perfect next step for anyone looking to delve deeper into their yoga practice.
The Reducing Stress chapter gives comprehensive advice for using yoga to alleviate and prevent stress at home and in the workplace, while Finding Balance features targeted breathing exercises and suggestions for achieving inner tranquillity. Finally, Restoring the Body provides invaluable support for healing and strengthening after illness or injury.
For anyone looking for clear guidance to help enhance their insight,Yoga Zone Yoga for Lifeis the only book necessary to continue the pursuit of a healthy, stress-free lifestyle.』
IPhone 3G used's review (ok, but short on instruction) 『This very short book is good as a personal testimonial, but it had less information than I would have liked on what yoga exercises worked for diabetes or how exactly they worked. The FAQ section in the book has more lines on yoga exercises for the back than for diabetes. There is no mention of ayurvedic diet to integrate with the yoga. The book would have sufficed as an online document, where it probably would have made more people feel like there are others with the same problems. On our limited budget, I felt I needed a little more for my money. One reason I'm looking at yoga for diabetes is our lack of money for conventional treatment, and the somewhat low level of follow-up and education in conventional medical environments, which the book mentions. So the book title accurately reflects the contents, but any one in the same boat will probably want a little more information.』

I've been practising yoga for three years and this book is all I've needed to help stay stress free and fit generally as well as remind me of how to do the poses. The book is broken into ten minute Hatha yoga workouts or chapters for legs, arms, flexibility (stretching) and more. If you do all the chapters, you have a complete workout which you can do once a week and the exercises do keep you in shape, though you have to work at them. There is an advanced workout at the end of the book, which includes headstands and one-hand poses. Very challenging and only for the very advanced. What I like best about the book are the beginner and advanced ten-minute daily miracles, which are like mini-workouts for the whole body and can be done in the early morning before your daily chores or any time of the day. There's even a section on diet and an appendix that covers health problems such as asthma and a list of recommended poses to alleviate the health problems. Barbara is incredibly clear with her instructions and I love the colour photographs that map the poses. This book is all I'll ever need on yoga.』
(Great book!) 『I had been interested in starting Yoga and found this book at my library. The fully-colored photographs convinced me to borrow it. As a beginner, I found this book VERY helpful. Aside from the photos, each pose is described step-by-step in detail, so it's very easy to follow. Also, there's a paragraph describing the benefits received from that particular pose (i.e. - what body part you're toning, stress-relieving purposes, etc.). At the end of each chapter is a list and of all the poses from that chapter's routine for quick reference.
I love how this book is divided. It starts with 2 different 10-minute sessions (beginning and advanced). The next few chapters are divided into what section of your body you want to tone. So if you feel like focusing more on your thighs and butt one day, you can just turn to that chapter and follow that routine. There's also a chapter on abs and another on your upper body.
This book is not only for introduction purposes. There is also a 40-minute routine for advanced Yoga students, with a bunch of headstands and shoulderstands I hope to be able to do one day! I defintely plan on buying this book sometime in the future.』
『This book contains exercises to tone and firm the body, gently working the muscles and internal organs, and keeping the spine and joints in perfect conditions.』

(Body Wisdom Yoga) 『Excellent CD for those starting out with Yoga with concise&simple verbal instructions for each posture. Do as many or as few postures as desired, or create your own program using programmable CD facility. Also contains body relaxation to end each session.』
(Good, clear guide) 『I was a bit skeptical before trying out this CD because I've only ever practiced at a class before, but it works very well as a way of keeping a regular yoga practice.
There's no music on the CD, just the instructor's clear and confident voice, with a bit of a European accent.
The instructions on the CD are very precise, as you'd expect with an Iyengar yoga teacher, and there are helpful illustrations for all the asanas (postures) in the booklet. Sometimes it almost seems as if the teacher is talking directly to me, for example when he reminds me to breathe naturally and I realize I've been holding my breath! It can be a bit spooky!
Some of the poses are just a litle bit shorter than I would have liked, but over all the CD and booklet really do help me to do my yoga practice at home. The 11 1/2 minute shavasana (corpse pose) at the end is very relaxing.』
『Body Wisdom Yogaoffers an introduction to a dymanic and "intelligent" form of yoga. It leads you through 22 postures with precise and detailed instructions. The accompanying 40 page booklet includes photos of all postures as they are taught as well as some general information』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (if you're sincere about yoga) 『The modern "western version" of yoga (clubs, spas, exercise classes) completely misses the essence of what yoga actually is. Feuerstein bravely tells it like it is--true yoga is not what you do, but what you are. And here's a news flash: morality is not a dirty word! The amazing thing is that once a person understands and practices yoga, morality is a natural by-product.
Buy and read this book only if you genuinely seek transformation.
Hold on a second...............
Sorry, I wrote my review prematurely; I had only read less than half the book, but I was enjoying and believed it would deliver.... However, the author soon enough resorts to thin analyses and reveals his personal prejudices and bigotries. In the end it was an extremely disappointing book, though the IDEA of it is right on. Not a book I recommend. One star.』
(Timely wisdom from a yoga stalwart!) 『Georg Feuerstein has never lost sight of the goal of yoga. In our western culture with its emphasis on the body, its refreshing to read of the often forgotten and/or sometimes ignored angas of yoga. Thank you Georg.』 『This book explores what integral morality and maturity means in traditional yogic terms and in the context of contemporary culture. Feuerstein shows how the ancient teachings of Yoga are singularly relevant in our time of global crisis. At the same time, he offers a trenchant critique of the contemporary Yoga movement. This work, which is full of surprising insights, is required reading for anyone aspiring to understand or practice authentic Yoga.』
