(inspiring, gentle and deep)
『I also found this at a bargain bin at a big bookstore and got it because it said it was simple, appropriate to beginners and exactly 30 minutes long, which is the minimum amount of time I am trying to exercise daily. I am very exercise adverse but Yolanda's quiet encouragement and stress free pacing has become really addictive to me and since actually getting me to exercise is my number one obstacle, I consider this a major plus. Encouraged by this to try other DVD's, so far I have found them jarring and intense, with insufficient warm up and little to no spiritual quality at all. I have always been turned off by "yoga martinets" who seem only interested in the disciplining the body like a wayward child. This is not what yoga is about IMHO. No slouch herself, Yolanda warms you up and down and has a heartfelt but low key quality I love. I feel excellent afterwards!

I researched Yolanda a tiny bit and gather that she has had a major transformation in her own life; yoga has apparently been a big part of creating that new life for her. She offers fairly traditional poses but apparently not just the easiest versions ever, as far as I can gather from my reading of Yoga Journal online. Yoga Journal - as well as Yolanda's own book - offer tips for improving postures and getting the most out of it. (Of course actual teachers are good too! LOL) Based on my considerable experience with tai chi, I would say that Simply Yoga DVD is "deceptively simple" and that one should not be too quick to underestimate what you can get from it. Like anything, the more effort you put in, the better the results will be.

For those starting at zero, in not the greatest shape but looking for rapid but gentle improvement, I think this is a real winner. I may advance to other DVDs and live teachers but I think this is a real keeper. Her understated spiritual qualities far exceed any other DVD presentation I have seen so far. I hope she makes a meditation CD! I've done a lot of visualization but I can see that she is an excellent teacher and would be a good guide into deeper meditations.』

(A decent start for yoga newbies with huge color pictures of the basic asanas)

Simply Yoga is a great intro book for yoga novices. Large color pics of the instructor concentrate on one pose or stretch on each two page spread. This is very helpful for newbies - you can flip though it to memorize the names of the poses.

So with this book, when a yoga beginner's DVD says to enter Child's Pose or Cobra Pose, they can go right to it without having to crane their necks up to the TV - they can just look down at the pose in the book.

The book also points out where one should be breathing in each part of the step. There are two pages of Corpse Pose that offer three different breathing techniques.

Recommended for newbies and early beginners to yoga postures.』

(Excellent for beginners)
『I have the boxed version with the DVD and the flashcards. I was very active in the past but now I am in horrible shape and have finally made the decision to do something about it. I plan to use this DVD every other day to help increase my flexibility (I am very stiff and inflexible right now). I've tried a few other yoga DVDs but I came back to this one because it is the level I need. It is slow and you have time to recover from each position (again, I need that pace). Yolanda's voice is very soothing, encouraging and relaxing, and she gives good reminders to breathe in the right places. It is true that she does not give a lot of technical info on the DVD, so watch it once first and review the book/flash cards as well. The 30 minute length is perfect and I hardly notice the time go by. I strongly recommend this DVD for someone who is starting out just like me. I know that I will eventually move up to other yoga programs (like Kathy Smith's) but this is what I need right now.』

(Excellent Beginners Workout)
『I would wholeheartedly recommend this video/dvd for beginner yoga...Yolanda has a very relaxing voice - it's a doable exercise and doesn't have you in all the twists and bends and harder poses that come in a more advanced yoga class. I've been using this for about 3 months now 3 times a week and find that it is really working my muscles and toning me up. I'm in my mid 50's and just love it!!! AND it's only 30 minutes long so it doesn't take up so much of your day! If you are thinking about yoga and looking at getting into it, then i urge you to think about this one - you will feel energized and relaxed at the same time!』

(Best Yoga)
『I want to encourage anyone that wants to incorporate Yoga into their healthy lifestyle to consider purchasing this book and DVD. In the book the author describes the details of each posture and also the importance of the various aspects of yoga, such as breathing and nutrition. In the DVD she calmly instructs the viewer in each pose of the sequence. During this she continues to remind the viewer how to breathe during each posture. I had originally borrowed this book/DVD from my local library and then pursued purchasing it because I had purchased several others by different authors and was disappointed. If anyone knows of other Yoga DVD's by Yolanda Pettinato I would appreciate the information, and how to purchase. Thank-you』

(Forget Fundamentals, Love the Trip)
『Not a traditional Buddhist or Yoga teaching, but an insightful, challenging little book that opens up the mind. Delightful on many levels.』

(The title is a blatant deception.)
『One flip through the book, and I realized I'd been had. Jutta Mattausch billed herself as a freelance journalist in Germany. This book is her fantasy about traveling to Tibet, and learning from a lama after the author saw a slide show about Tibet one evening. To qoute her at the end of the first chapter 'This town in Tibet really exists. However, its name is unimportant because no one should come looking for this city. The following story also exists in reality. I will tell it like it took place, and could have taken place. In a kaleidoscope of worlds, the visions merge with realities, and dreams and wide,(sic) awakeness shake hands.' The only illustration in the entire book consists of one amateurish drawing. What is claimed in the subtitle as 'Essence of all Yogas; A Tibetan Excercise for Physical Vitality and Mental Power' turns out to be the common Tibetan Prostration. Understandably, Madame Alexandra David-Neal this author is not, but at least she could aspire to write like Lopsang Rampa. The title is a blatant deception, and to advertise it like a book of instruction, is willfully misleading and a shameless scam.』

(Inspiration for the Spiritual Trip)
『Tibetan Power Yoga by Jutta Mattausch fits into the expanding modality of spiritual story books whose message and essence are rooted in the authors' deepest perceptions rather than in their surface stories. These books often do not portray the popularly established fundamentals of particular traditions in the accepted public pigeonholes where every reader feels comfortable. But their purpose is to awaken in particularly aware readers a feeling of enlightened inspiration and to suggest a pathway on which an independent spiritual seeker might trod. Tibetan Power Yoga does just this. Ms. Mattausch tells a tale here of connecting with a Tibetan lama who, over time, opens her awareness and provides valuable life guidance. His direction to her is to practice the basic Buddhist prostration, a challenge to find the sublime in an ordinary everyday exercise. As she progresses, he drops in many little teachings along the way. The author reports on both the everyday reality and altered states of her trip in order to project the various realities any seeker faces on the spiritual path. The story flows and ends with effective touches of poignancy. Many in the West today are deeply concerned with the current plight of Tibet and its ancient culture, and there is much emphasis on the writings of current Buddhist leaders and on translations of ancient manuscripts. If we are to rise to the full challenge of the spiritual trip that lies at the heart of this ancient culture's traditions, we must value stories that awaken the inspiration for such a trip. This book offers that inspiration.』

(amateurish writing overshadows somewhat interesting content)
『I found this book to be annoying in it's very amateur writing style. Isn't that what editors are supposed to help with? The content was somewhat interesting, but overall I found this work preachy and disappointing. Can't really recommend it...』

(Good introduction to enhancing the human energy field.)
『Although certainly not a literary masterpiece, it offers a nice introduction to the exercise of "prostration," a Tibetan form of concise yoga. Also includes some excellent breathing exercises. Limited Buddhist philosophy. The story, though sparsely written, grows on you, and there are some nice nuggets of wisdom within.』
『The "Tibetan Power Yoga" is what the Tibetan Lama Tsering Norbu calls this set of motions that has given the people from the roof of the world physical vitality and mental power into ripe old age since time immemorial. Here is an absorbing story set in distant Tibet, yet could also take place within all of us anywhere in the world since it deals with the journey to the self.』

『Great book. Explains things well. My water pilates instructor had the book and felt that it was very good as well.』

(Extremely Helpful and a lot of fun)
『As a total non-swimmer and out of shape middle-aged woman, I found this book extremely helpful and the exercises a lot of fun. I don't really know any swimming strokes, but love the water and found these exercises have helped me to put on some muscle and take off some weight. I have osteoarthritis in my knees, shoulder problems, neck problems, and had hurt my feet on the treadmill. With this book I was able to keep exercising. I have loved it. The only reason I didn't give it a five is because it's not water proof and needs something you can take with you to the water area, if not into the water. I found the directions easy to follow.』

(Horrible)
『I recently started doing a lot of swimming and water exercises. There are several great books but this is not one of them. The book was done on the cheap with no photos to help you understand the exercise, just some line drawings.』

(FANTASTIC!)
『As a (almost) 16 year old swimmer who has been swimming before I could walk, I am always looking for ways to improve my swimmimg (which is the core of my fitness program). This is an excellent book and I recommend it to anyone who LOVES the water!』

(Review by certified hatha yoga instructor)
『Prasara Yoga: Flow Beyond Thought begins with a most interesting conversation. Author Scott Sonnon presents the idea of improvisational flow - a practice that moves beyond asana (poses) and focuses on the movement between poses. He writes, "if asana were the alphabet and vinyasa the grammar, then prasara would be the conversation." What a beautiful concept! Sonnon calls this practice "prasara" and defines it as a way "to explore, locate and release deeper or more subtle blockages." One meaning of prasara is to dance. Sonnon's sequences are fluid and do resemble a dance more than the practice of individual poses. The book includes 5 prasara sequences with photographs and helpful instructions. The sequences are probably best enjoyed by those with at least an intermediate level of yoga experience. The book is also an excellent reference for anatomy and physiology and how it relates to the transformative power of yoga. Sonnon tackles almost every topic related to yoga and the mind/body connection. Sonnon thoroughly researched the how and why behind the healing power of yoga. Sonnon weaves yoga philosophy with modern science to shed light on human physiology and health. Prasara yoga is a welcome addition to the present literature on yoga as a therapeutic modality. This text is a must have for anyone studying yoga therapy. The background information is accessible yet complex, making Sonnon's approach appropriate for beginners as well as advanced yoga teachers. Prasara yoga will excite readers into a new relationship with yoga.
Jessica Teel, RYT
Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor』

(Introduction to Prasara Yoga philosophy and movement flows)
『In this book, instructor Scott Sonnon introduces the practice of Prasara, a type of physical practice that evolved through his background in multiple martial arts and other fitness activities. In the first part of the book, Sonnon further defines Prasara and discusses the role of asana (the physical practice of yoga) in traditional exercise physiology. He also focuses on the experience of Flow and addresses many different physical concepts, including the stress arousal system, proprioception, the sixth sense, pain threshold, and core activation. In Part Two, Sonnon presents his five "Series A" flows. The are dynamic series which include both traditional yoga postures and more flowing transitional movements. Each of the five flows is broken down into step-by-step numbered instructions, both photographic and descriptive. For the most part, these flows include many challenging movements and are appropriate for advanced yoga practitioners or skilled athletes only.

I think this book is most likely to appeal to athletes who are coming from backgrounds similar to Scott's own. I would not recommend this book to those who are simply curious about yoga, as Prasara is a distinct style that would not be appropriate for most as mentioned above.』

(Finding Flow with Prasara)
『This book is a perfect guide to welcome anyone into the beautiful form of Yoga called Prasara. It shows you step-by-step how to perform the Yoga Flows with pictures and written descriptions. Whether you are new to Yoga or a seasoned practitioner you will enjoy this book.』
Know Your Flow The Prasara Yoga Book.

Years of research into the zone culminates in a clear, concise guide to self mastery. By bridging the gap between yoga and athletics this third evolution of yoga allows anyone to tap into optimal human experience where everything feels, looks and just goes right . Exercise descriptions and clear photograph examples take you from beginning poses to linking the poses with simple breathing techniques and unlock the most powerful virtue in human physical life: flow.』

(Awesome for the serious yogi)
『This book ROCKS! I totally agree with the reviewer before me. This is a great book for someone who has done some yoga and loves it and is ready to move into the spiritual side of yoga. Truly amazing and has completely changed my life. The writers have written this book with perfect simplicity and grace. A very easy read, yet encompasses everything quickly and neatly.』

(Awesome Resource!)
『I can't believe no one else has reviewed this yet! Despite the cheesy title, this is a bona fide invaluable resource, especially for those who do postures, but are unfamiliar with Hindu philosophy. The first half of the book is a basic introduction to yoga philosophy. The second half, believe it or not, consists of ample selections from the Upanishads, as well as the entire texts of the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, all translated into contemporary English with no complicated sanskrit terms---all in this tight little compact paperback. For such a small price, don't pass up this bargain!』
『In recent decades, the timeless practice of yoga has gained increasing popularity throughout the western world. However, many practitioners don't fully understand the philosophy behind yoga.

In a book based on his popular Spiritual Teachings series, Mark Forstater, with yoga instructor Jo Manuel, illuminates the meaning of this Far Eastern practice and makes it comprehensible for modern followers. Combining the significance of the ancient texts with the knowledge and insights of today's practitioners,Yoga Mastersdistills the essence of yoga into a highly readable and readily applicable guide to its millennia-old theories and practices.

Beginning with an introduction to the theory and the philosophy behind yoga, the book also contains new translations of the primary yoga scriptures. The yoga teachings of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Yoga Sutras hold the keys to self-awareness and the all-important sense of who we are. It is through seeking and understanding this inner truth that we can develop confidence, strength, and tranquility, and realize our limitless potential for happiness and well-being.

Whether the reader is a beginning or advanced student or an experienced practitioner,Yoga Masterswill add new depth and meaning to anyone's current yoga practice.』

『This book was reviewed in the July/August 2000 issue of Yoga Journal. The reviewer liked it. "A complete novice could spend an hour or so perusing this book and come away with a solid elementary understanding of yoga and what it offers. It's not an ultimate guide - it doesn't pretend to be - but it is an excellent first guide."』
『Simple Yoga takes an extremely complex subject and makes it accessible to general readers. It explains what yoga is, how it evolved in ancient India, and how it can benefit the typically harried Western lifestyle. It gives practical information on the various yoga styles available in the West and offers suggestions for choosing a style and finding an appropriate teacher. A chapter on women and yoga and a basic routine for readers to try on their own are included, as well as a modified routine for the office. Unlike most yoga books, targeted to people already involved in the discipline, Simple Yoga is short and easy to absorb. It gives a feel for what yoga is without getting overly theoretical. A practical guide, it is particularly useful in helping readers find the style of yoga that's right for them.』
