The Real McCoy is the copy published by Self-Realization Fellowship and has the footnotes that I got as much out of as the text. Many explaining the essential oneness of western and eastern religions through biblical passages, etc. This copy does not have those invaluable footnotes!
Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship organization continues to thrive and expand worldwide. I recommend only purchasing genuine, original, not-copied books published by Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship. They will have the name Self-Realization Fellowship inside as well as the SRF emblem (which is a star within a circle within a lotus).』
(Decent Compilation) 『This collection evidently inspires some ire from reviewers because it is not clear simply from the cover that this is not a new work by Yogananda, but a collection of various texts that embody what the editor felt was "The Essence of Kriya Yoga." First, to clear up a few things:
1. Paramhansa Yogananda's name was spelled as it is in this volume during the life of the great yogi's life. I have a first edition of Autobiography of a Yogi with his signature, and I am sure other copies of that edition are available for verification. I was surprised that this volume had the name correct, given the widespread misspelling, and that was what interested me in it in the first place.
2. This collection contains Science of Religion and Songs of the Soul in their entirety, and not merely excerpts. Otherwise, the Autobiography, Healthy Diet, and Ladder of Evolution are excerpted as Steven indicated.
3. If the works included in this volume were redundant to the Autobiography, I would not have even considered purchasing it.
I only write this review to correct some flagrant misinformation. Those corrections aside, I think this is a fair publication except from the formatting, which is lackluster. It would also have been wise for the publisher to indicate on the cover that this is, in fact, a collection, and not some newly discovered work.
That said, if you lack any of Yogananda's writings included in it, then it is certainly worth the price. As far as I know, this is the only publisher that has brought multiple works by the master in a single volume.』
(If you already have the Autobiography of a Yogi, you already have most of this book) 『First of all, to the folks who were disappointed that this is not an SRF book, check who the publisher is. SRF has published all of their own books since about 1950. Check the SRF website if you still aren't sure (there are a few non-SRF published books that SRF carries).
I was hoping that this book, in it's 321 pages, would contain a fair amount of currently out-of-print information on Kriya Yoga, written by Paramahansa Yogananda. I was disappointed.
Here is the breakdown:
Science of Religion excerpts: pages 1-52 Songs of the Soul excerpts: pages 53-122 Autobiography of a Yogi excerpts: pages 123-276, 296-316
Here is what is in this book that I consider 'out of print':
Healthy Diet (excerpts from lessons and articles from the 1920's) pages 277-295 = 18 pages
Ladder of Evolution (excerpt from an article in Inner Culture March 1937) pages 317-321 = 4 pages
Grand total of 'out of print' material: 22 pages
Incidentally, the entire March 1937 issue of Inner Culture, as well as many more of the older SRF magazines, may be viewed at: [...]
I am sure that the editor of this book is very sincere in his efforts in putting this book together. I feel that most people who are interested in Paramahansa Yogananda and Kriya Yoga would probably be better off with the complete texts of 'Science of Religion', 'Songs of the Soul', and 'Autobiography of a Yogi', however. 』
(An inspiring compilation) 『This is a must own compilation from one of the greatest yogis of recent times. Instead of the recent editions of his work which have been edited and changed, this volume contains the original works published during Parmahansa Yogananda's life-time. The only wish I have is that this should have been a hardcover book! I'm a long-time Kriya practitioner and have read some of the works published here, but still enjoyed it -- having all this information focussed on Kriya Yoga is very useful.』
(Inspirational collection) 『This is a collection of the writings of a Kriya Master on the subject of Kriya Yoga. The author passed away over 50 years ago and can have no new writings. It seems there is a dispute on the spelling of his name -- the authentic way that he spelled it is the way it is given in this publication and not as subsequently revised by zealous administrators of his legacy. I found it very useful to have his first book on religion which sets the stage for his exposition of Kriya Yoga taken from the Autobiography of a Yogi, as well as his inspirational spiritual poetry all in one book. I recommend this highly.』

I found this to be an excellent Yoga Book, it has a exercise program designed to keep you in your very best shape. 』

(A Good One) 『This is a great book if you are new to yoga and want to try a physically demanding routine. I've been living yoga for about 2 months now (I know it's just too little time) and this one really satisfied my need and curiosity on a more challenging yoga session. There are 3 secquences in here (30 minutes, 60 minutes&90 minutes long) so you can adjust them to your timetable. The pics are very useful and show precisely what the posture should look like and includes step-by-step instructions on getting in and out of the posture. There are lots of useful tips on using props and varying the depth of the posture depending on your level. Let's point that this is not Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga (which is a bit more demanding but also less flexible on the length of the sequences and the postures you must include) but can actually be used as an introduction to more powerful types of yoga so you can later on try Ashtanga/Vinyasa.』
(Excellent Book for Beginners) 『As a beginner in Yoga, with little time for a regular weekly session, I bought two books for beginners. Dynamic Yoga and also Power Yoga for Beginners. Both books are excellent but if I was only buying one I would choose Dynamic Yoga. The main reason being that it is better at describing the flow of movements from one pose to another. It also is better at describing the breathing sequences when doing the Sun Salutations. The only quibile is that it would be of great advantage if it was spiral bound.』
(Learn Step-by-Step, You'll Use it Each Day) 『This is a really good book to refer to each day as you go about learning Ashtanga/power yoga. It's just page after page of very detailed photography of each pose, and most importantly "transitional moves"!! I finally learned the key to jumping back safely in and out of the vinyasa/flow sequence. For someone mid-30s, average health, average flexibility, this book makes a daunting type of yoga practice much more attainable.
There is little here about yoga philosophy, but what is there is straightforward. Good help with pronunciation and learning the Sanskrit versions of the asana names.
Good book overall. I now use it every day.』
『This full-colour, accessible book for beginners teaches "dynamic yoga", which is based on the athletic style of Ashtanga, offering a powerfully effective home regime of energising exercises and calming techniques. It features important breathing techniques, athletic exercise sequences and over 40 key postures. The step-by-step photographs help you to tackle the challenging postures and avoid common mistakes.』

"live here and now" "body, mind, soul" "awareness" "let go any desires, begin to love and give" "keep trying and practice- the key to Yoga" "free your soul- unlearn what have been taught since we were born"
And, more... 』
(The Essence of the Teachings of Yoga) 『There is no other book which conveys the true essence of Yoga as does this book. It would be helpful for anyone truly interested to begin collecting the 10 volume set originally published as "Yoga, the Alpha and the Omega," as well. This series IS the Alpha and the Omega on Yoga. I am not an Osho devotee, yet regardless of anyone's views on his controversial life, his teachigs remain unparalleled. If you want to talk on a scholarly basis, sure you can read Eliade's "Yoga, Immortality and Freedom." That has an excellent history of the path. If you are interested in authentic practice of Asana and the like, anything produced by the KYM (Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram) will be invaluable- I especially reccomend "The Yoga of the Yogi," Krishnamacharya's (2nd) biography. And of course, the classical texts are always of Great use- The pradipika, gheranda samhita, all the countless others...
However, if you really want to extract the teachings, buy this book. Read it, meditate on it, let it sink deep down into your root and your envelop your being. This is it. These volumes by Osho are all you need. This book will change you, if you are ready for it. And that is what Yoga is about- a transmutation: completely breaking you apart, burning your Klesas, and revealing your essence in its complete freedom- freedom from tension. The natural, innate state of Sahaja, pure spontaneity. Remember, anytime tension arises, it begins in you. Instead of projecting it out, look within. Hari Om Tat Sat』
(best book ever written on yoga--distortion of nietzsche) 『i read this addition by osho in one sitting, and again found myself in a rapture over the astounding unconventional and enlightening approach not to be found in other eastern texts. one might call osho a 'mystic existentialist' in the tradition of iris origo, although ultimately rajneesh falls into no category at all because of his overwhelming authenticity. however, i believe that any widespread reading of his work promotes a dangerous misunderstanding of the ideas of friedrich nietzsche, whom the author is alternately sympathetic to and scornful of. (in this, as in everything else, osho contradicts himself directly in his own exuberant fashion.) he states quite unambiguously that adolf hitler, a 'man of imagination' according to osho, took his inspiration from nietzsche. "destroy the weak, save the strong", osho writes. "this is what friedrich nietzsche taught and hitler took his ideas and used them." that's not verbatim, but damn close. i was disappointed and angry that a deservingly legendary figure like osho--probably the best eastern philosopher to ever live--would allow himself such a gross, self indulgent massacre of a thinker undoubtedly his equal. while not all his comments on nietzsche are false ("man needs illusions and lies to live, wrote nietzsche":this is precisely what nietzsche said) osho reminds one of an ignorant born again christian when depicting nietzsche as a great thinker who went so awry that his writings are blasphemous. since nietzsche was an atheist, osho cannot abide him. and yet in his other works osho is so accepting of every kind of metaphysical stance--atheism, agnosticism, etc. other than that this is one of the most healing texts i have ever encountered, borrowed heavily from but superior and more accessible than the bhagavad gita or the vedas.』
(Journey of Searching for Self) 『My friend gave this book to me while my heart was in terrible turmoil and my life was a mass. Osho's teaching did help me a lot. He gives a new interpretation of how we search for a more spiritual, happy life, and to see into one's self more clearly. He talks about the difference between brain and mind, and encourages us to flow with nature, to flow with the true existence, then to be able to enjoy the real harmony in the deep heart. I felt so touched during the reading. The best is that I gain the courage and begin to believe that everyone can be happy and to love and be loved completely. Now I am working on it. If you are looking for a way to be peaceful and joyful, I am pleased to recommand this book to you all.』 『
Much of what is known as yoga today emphasizes physical postures and exercises to increase flexibility and help relaxation. But in fact, yoga has its roots in centuries of rigorous investigation and research in the East to develop an understanding of human consciousness and its potential.
InYoga, Osho explains the meaning of some of the most important Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an early "scientist of the soul" who is credited with being the father of Raja Yoga, or the "royal path" of yoga that uses physical postures and breath primarily as a means to achieve higher states of consciousness. With a fresh translation of these ancient texts, and unique Osho insights into the modern mind and its psychology, Patanjali comes to life on the pages with an approach to using yoga for greater self-understanding that is absolutely relevant to our times.
An invaluable resource for beginning or experienced yoga practitioners, and for anyone who seeks to better understand the intricate and powerful relationship that exists between body and mind

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (The blue path to enlightenment) 『For those drawn to the Chakrasambara (Heruka) Tantra, Geshe Kelsang finally revealed all the essential practices after many years of offering only Vajrayogini training. However, you will also need his definitive Vajrayogini book, "Guide to Dakini Land", because apart from the sadhanas and the completion stage meditations the two practices are substantially the same 11-Yoga system, so he hasn't duplicated the yogas held in common between the two. For the Heruka practitioner this book is the fundamental guide to Dharma practice from the day you open it until the end of your life, by which time you will hopefully have become a Buddha.』
(A Treasure for Heruka Practitioners) 『This book is essentially a commentary on the sadhana (liturgy) for doing the Tantric practices of the Heruka Body Mandala, practices originally laid out by the Indian master Ghantapa in ancient times. Heruka is the Tantric manifestation of the enlightened compassion of all the Buddhas. Tantric practices are designed to quickly lead one to enlightenment in one lifetime by transforming ordinary appearances and ordinary conceptions into pure ones. Tantric practices have two stages, generation stage and completion stage, which are beyond the scope of this review to explain. This book seems to focus primarily on the generation stage practices, but further study will reveal a wealth of completion stage teachings as well. At the back of the book it also contains the sadhana, as well as other surrounding practices, such that one can understand and practice these amazing teachings merely with the purchase of this book. Tharpa publications also publishes the sadhana separately, as well as a CD of the sadhana so you can learn the melodies, pronunciation, etc.. But, you really must have the empowerment and oral transmission of the teachings for them to have any effect, so the readership for whom this book may prove useful (rather than merely interesting) may be fairly limited. I don't know of any teacher except the author who gives this particular empowerment and transmission to Westerners. And even if some do, this author is in such ill-favor in the lama community (over the silly Dorje Shugdan controversy) that I doubt any other teacher will be recommending this author's books to students for any practice, even though Geshe Kelsang's books are consistently the best in class.
After years of practicing various Heruka practices, I can attest to their power and speed. I have heard that this is the practice responsible for the incredible power of many of the spiritual heavy hitters in recent Tibetan history, such as Je Phabongkhapa, as well as such Indian masters as Nagarjuna. Unfortunately for us Westerners, few of our parents gave us to monasteries at age six as was expected for all second sons in Tibet, so we did not spend our whole life in monasteries and retreat caves with enough time to really do these practices justice. The Heruka Body Mandala practices are long and complicated, and to do a long retreat, or to do them three times a day, or even once a day, or even to do the short form once a day is much more than many working stiffs like me can do. But there are very short forms of Ghantapa's other Heruka practices, the Heruka Five Deities practices, that you can do daily, and, personally, I found that Heruka was more than willing to work with me amidst my hectic and full life, and over time he taught me even shorter but very powerful ways to fold his practices into the other practices I do have time to do. Fortunately, Heruka's practices, unlike those of other Tantric deities, become ever more powerful as times become more degenerate, and, certainly, to paraphrase Madonna, we are living in a degenerate time, and I am a degenerate guy!
Since I seldom do the full, formal practices as they are laid out in the book these days, I have not really read this book for a long time. Indeed, although I knew and studied with Geshe-la while he was writing this book and for a few years after it came out, I have not been a student of his for a few years now. But, on a recent retreat I had wanted to see how to integrate some esoteric teachings from another tradition with my Heruka underpinnings, (easy and powerful to do, BTW!), so I brought this book along and gave it another reading. I had recalled only the book's emphasis on generation stage, since that is ostensibly what the book and practices are about, and I was no longer emphasizing generation stage, so I just thought I'd read it as background to Geshe-la's books on completion stage practices (Tantric Grounds and Paths, and Clear Light of Bliss). During the re-reading I was amazed how good it was, especially the way Geshe-la weaves penetrating completion stage teachings and practices in at every opportunity. And, as with one other of Geshe-la's books, the words seemed somehow not to be written on mere paper, but appeared to float in a clear sky! I left the retreat with great renewed affection for this book and its author, and I thought I'd write a review to reflect that.
As for the book itself, it is flawlessly written and published, as are all Geshe-la's books. The language and presentation are clear and precise, and specifically suited to Westerners. As they state, "Tharpa Publications is a publisher of Buddhist books that provide the most complete and integrated presentation of the Buddhist path to enlightenment available in any western language, from basic introductions to Buddhism and meditation to detailed and lucid expositions of the highest Buddhist philosophy and Tantric practice". Most true. And to underscore the timeless quality of the whole enterprise we find, "Set in Palatino by Tharpa Publications. Printed on acid-free 250-year longlife paper and bound by Butler and Tanner, Frome, Somerset, England". Indeed.
Once again, this is probably not a book for very many people. Only someone drawn to Heruka and his practices is really likely to get much out of this book, and only then if they have received the empowerment and oral transmission of the teachings from Geshe-la. And most Tantric practitioners who have received Heruka empowerments from Geshe-la or anyone else seem to practice the related and much easier Vajrayogini practices these days, so we Heruka practitioners are probably a fairly rare breed. But if you are drawn to Heruka (it is probably true that "you don't choose Heruka, Heruka chooses you!") get the book, the empowerment and the oral transmission of the practices, and enjoy!』
(Clear and understandable Tantric instructions of Heruka.) 『This book is an explanation on how to practice Heruka's body mandala. The author has explained in detail so the reader is able to follow through on a extesive practice. If you are a tantric practioner that needs some guidance from a qualified teacher this is the book for you. In the back of the book there is a few sadhana that coordinate with the teachings. The book is quite advanced. If you are a beginner in Buddhism this is probably not a good first book to read. Try Universal Compassion by the same author.』 『
Essence of Vajrayanais the first complete explanation in English of the Highest Yoga Tantra practice of Heruka body mandala. Buddha Heruka is a manifestation of all the Buddhas' enlightened compassion, and by relying upon him we can swiftly attain a pure selfless joy and bring true happiness to others.
In Part One, Geshe Kelsang explains with great clarity and precision how we can practise the sublime meditations of Heruka body mandala, and thereby gradually transform our ordinary world and experiences into the transcendental reality of a Buddha. Then, in Part Two, he provides definitive instructions on the completion stage practices that lead to the supreme bliss of full enlightenment in this one lifetime.
This is a treasury of practical instructions for those seriously interested in following the Tantric path.
