(The Happiest Tree: A Yoga Story)
『Thank you for your wonderful service as usual. My students loved the book and so did I. I'm very happy that your customers can find beautiful books like thisone and many other ones you have so useful for children. Thanks again』

(Decent book)
『The story line here is simple but great for kids to understand the power of not giving up. However the ending is a little weak and I thought the emphasis on yoga a little odd in the title&in the book itself. However the illustrations are great. Overall not a bad book for a young girl to understand how to get some self esteem.』

(4 1/2 Be the Tree)
『Young Meena is a girl of Indian ancestry who is going through a growth spurt common to many kids her age. As her mom explains, "your arms and leg are growing really fast. That can make you feel clumsy sometimes." When Meena rehearses for the school play (a retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood"), both her balance and self-esteem take a tumble. Her Dad reassures her that she needn't be perfect, "just try your best." Meena dejectedly replies, "I'm perfectly clumsy."

The next day Meena and her mom go to the "Auntie" Vohra's Indian grocery story. Snacking on some "matthi," an astonished Meena see legs shooting up, holding still, and lowering again! It's a yoga class, and Auntie encourages her to join. Through yoga practice, Meena improves her coordination, and more importantly, her self-confidence and ability to calm herself. All this comes in handy on the night of the play, especially when things don't go quite as planned.

The book is admirable on a number of levels. The richly saturated acrylic illustrations, add drama and intensity to the story. The author sprinkles a few Indian words throughout the book (there's a glossary), and depictions of Meena's home and the market show Indian decorations, and a colorful assortment of foods. The Indian influences add interest and authenticity without overpowering or stereotyping Meena, who is, after all, a child of the West. I thought that one of Ruth Jeyaveeran's pictures (the rehearsal) breaks the fluid narrative; she covers too many story elements in one illustration, but overall text and pictures mesh well.

"The Happiest Tree" shows a few yoga poses, and emphasizes the slow progression and the importance of the teacher's help. Luckily for Meena, who plays a tree in the play, Auntie Vohra teaches "Tree Pose" and Meena uses this to calm herself and use imagery during the play itself. After several classes, Meena thins to herself, "I can change my body by how I feel inside...IF I am quiet inside, my body will be still. That's what yoga is really about." Well, yoga is about many more things, and the book tends to deemphasize yoga and the mind, but perhaps the physical is more relevant and understandable for a young reader. It's nice to see a book about yoga for kids, especially one that equally informs and entertains. The author lists three nonfiction books ("Yoga for Children," "Kid Yoga: Fun with a Twist," and "Yoga for Kids") for those who want to pursue the topic.』

(a happy tree)
『The Happiest Tree shows how yoga can help children calm down. Meena has a part in the school play. She fears that she may be too clumsy to even stand still enough to play a tree. She learns to control her anxiety at her yoga lessons at her Auntie's place. The story is slightly didactic in that some yoga lessons are cleverly snuck into the narrative, but the insertions are not interruptions to the flow of the story. The artwork is somewhat folksy, but the simplicity of the illustrations are rather appealing.』

(Meena is Lovely as a Tree)
『Menna is one of those kids who walks into a room and things fall over. She can tumble over her own feet. In fact, she's so excited about her class play The New Improved Red Ridinghood, that she trips, falls, and spills the paint while helping build the set. Worse, when she and her mother go to an East Indian grocery store to shop, Meena manages to knock over a bag of rice. Now she's really miserable. Encouraged by the store's owner, whom everyone calls Auntie, Meena signs up for children's yoga. As she works through the various poses, she discovers a mind-body connection she didn't know she had. Then her teacher, Mrs. Jackson tells her she must be a trree in the play. Meena can't stand still, until she realizes she might apply something she she learned in yoga class to her part. Then on opening night, she confronts a disaster with her costume. Can she use yoga principles to overcome the problem? If so, she stands to become THE HAPPIEST TREE in the production.

THE HAPPIEST TREE: A YOGA STORY comes from the pen of talented children's author Uma Krishnaswami. Uma has the knack of catching a child's feelings, growth, and discovery as she develops Meena from a shy little girl who wants to hide from the world, to a confidant actress who might just handle the unexpected emergency. Ruth Jeyaveeran's illustrations work well with Uma Krishnaswami's text, presenting Menna's environment in a rich palette of East Indian colors and objects. As a result THE HAPPIEST TREE: A YOGA STORY offers a universal problem for the heroine to solve, by drawing on a solution from a specific cultural background. The combination offers a rich reading and visual experience to anyone who wants it.』

『We live in an age, which is, for an increasing number of people, of health consciousness. Yoga is often seen as the preserve of middle-aged, middle-class women, but this book is all about Yoga for children. Yoga promotes both physical and mental well-being and thus has no age barriers at either end. If, for example, a parent does Yoga, they may never have really thought about offering this option to their offspring, but there is actually no reason why they shouldn't. This book serves as a first introduction to the subject for both parents and teachers who wish to introduce kids to Yoga.』

(Great Exercise book)
『I am a visual person and this book has been great. I have been able to start a program using this book at home and it has been great.』
『This first-of-a-kind book based on the author’s experience outlines a comprehensive program specifically geared to those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and related conditions. This book covers a wide range of movement therapies such as range of motion exercises, low to no-impact aerobics, strength training, and yoga. This book is unique in that it covers a wide range of techniques, which are specifically geared to, and have been proven helpful for, those with arthritis like conditions. The exercises are all explained in detail utilizing safe body mechanics and are illustrated in standing, standing holding onto a chair, and seated variations to accommodate a wide variety of abilities. Also included are instructions for exercising in the water. This complete wellness program goes beyond the traditional exercise book offering information on home safety, fall prevention, activities of daily living, and body mechanics (including how to get up from the floor) as well as techniques to improve posture and balance. Each chapter includes brief explanations on how each movement technique physiologically affects the body and how they specifically help those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and related conditions. The strength training chapter also includes simple muscle diagrams to educate readers about which muscle group(s) they are targeting. The yoga section includes exercises aimed at maintaining range of motion in the hands and feet. This book also provides information on stress management and provides instruction in four different relaxation/meditation techniques. If you are looking for a complete program to help you manage your symptoms and enhance your quality of life, then this book is for you.』

(Wonderful Book)
『This book beautifully lays out the entire Highest Yogi Philosophy. It also parallels that of the Hindu Philosophy of Atman joining Brahman. Yogi Ramacharaka's argument goes to the absolute limits of reason, encompassing every single logical possibility of the nature of reality. His style of argument itself will vastly expand your mind, even if you do not fully grasp his argument. He will make you think on deeper levels than you have ever before thought, and will guide you into these truths ever-so-gently. Beautiful exposition on the nature of reality!』

(A Good One)
『This is a great book if you are new to yoga and want to try a physically demanding routine. I've been living yoga for about 2 months now (I know it's just too little time) and this one really satisfied my need and curiosity on a more challenging yoga session. There are 3 secquences in here (30 minutes, 60 minutes&90 minutes long) so you can adjust them to your timetable. The pics are very useful and show precisely what the posture should look like and includes step-by-step instructions on getting in and out of the posture. There are lots of useful tips on using props and varying the depth of the posture depending on your level. Let's point that this is not Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga (which is a bit more demanding but also less flexible on the length of the sequences and the postures you must include) but can actually be used as an introduction to more powerful types of yoga so you can later on try Ashtanga/Vinyasa.』

(Excellent Book for Beginners)
『As a beginner in Yoga, with little time for a regular weekly session, I bought two books for beginners. Dynamic Yoga and also Power Yoga for Beginners. Both books are excellent but if I was only buying one I would choose Dynamic Yoga. The main reason being that it is better at describing the flow of movements from one pose to another. It also is better at describing the breathing sequences when doing the Sun Salutations. The only quibile is that it would be of great advantage if it was spiral bound.』

(Learn Step-by-Step, You'll Use it Each Day)
『This is a really good book to refer to each day as you go about learning Ashtanga/power yoga. It's just page after page of very detailed photography of each pose, and most importantly "transitional moves"!! I finally learned the key to jumping back safely in and out of the vinyasa/flow sequence. For someone mid-30s, average health, average flexibility, this book makes a daunting type of yoga practice much more attainable.

There is little here about yoga philosophy, but what is there is straightforward. Good help with pronunciation and learning the Sanskrit versions of the asana names.

Good book overall. I now use it every day.』
『This full-colour, accessible book for beginners teaches "dynamic yoga", which is based on the athletic style of Ashtanga, offering a powerfully effective home regime of energising exercises and calming techniques. It features important breathing techniques, athletic exercise sequences and over 40 key postures. The step-by-step photographs help you to tackle the challenging postures and avoid common mistakes.』

(A great book to start with for whomever seeking the inner peace&joy)

Several concepts in Osho's book:

"live here and now"
"body, mind, soul"
"awareness"
"let go any desires, begin to love and give"
"keep trying and practice- the key to Yoga"
"free your soul- unlearn what have been taught since we were born"

And, more...

(The Essence of the Teachings of Yoga)
『There is no other book which conveys the true essence of Yoga as does this book. It would be helpful for anyone truly interested to begin collecting the 10 volume set originally published as "Yoga, the Alpha and the Omega," as well. This series IS the Alpha and the Omega on Yoga.
I am not an Osho devotee, yet regardless of anyone's views on his controversial life, his teachigs remain unparalleled. If you want to talk on a scholarly basis, sure you can read Eliade's "Yoga, Immortality and Freedom." That has an excellent history of the path. If you are interested in authentic practice of Asana and the like, anything produced by the KYM (Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram) will be invaluable- I especially reccomend "The Yoga of the Yogi," Krishnamacharya's (2nd) biography. And of course, the classical texts are always of Great use- The pradipika, gheranda samhita, all the countless others...

However, if you really want to extract the teachings, buy this book. Read it, meditate on it, let it sink deep down into your root and your envelop your being. This is it. These volumes by Osho are all you need. This book will change you, if you are ready for it.
And that is what Yoga is about- a transmutation: completely breaking you apart, burning your Klesas, and revealing your essence in its complete freedom- freedom from tension. The natural, innate state of Sahaja, pure spontaneity.
Remember, anytime tension arises, it begins in you. Instead of projecting it out, look within.
Hari Om Tat Sat』

(best book ever written on yoga--distortion of nietzsche)
『i read this addition by osho in one sitting, and again found myself in a rapture over the astounding unconventional and enlightening approach not to be found in other eastern texts.
one might call osho a 'mystic existentialist' in the tradition of iris origo, although ultimately rajneesh falls into no category at all because of his overwhelming authenticity. however, i believe that any widespread reading of his work promotes a dangerous misunderstanding of the ideas of friedrich nietzsche, whom the author is alternately sympathetic to and scornful of. (in this, as in everything else, osho contradicts himself directly in his own exuberant fashion.) he states quite unambiguously that adolf hitler, a 'man of imagination' according to osho, took his inspiration from nietzsche. "destroy the weak, save the strong", osho writes. "this is what friedrich nietzsche taught and hitler took his ideas and used them." that's not verbatim, but damn close. i was disappointed and angry that a deservingly legendary figure like osho--probably the best eastern philosopher to ever live--would allow himself such a gross, self indulgent massacre of a thinker undoubtedly his equal. while not all his comments on nietzsche are false ("man needs illusions and lies to live, wrote nietzsche":this is precisely what nietzsche said) osho reminds one of an ignorant born again christian when depicting nietzsche as a great thinker who went so awry that his writings are blasphemous. since nietzsche was an atheist, osho cannot abide him. and yet in his other works osho is so accepting of every kind of metaphysical stance--atheism, agnosticism, etc. other than that this is one of the most healing texts i have ever encountered, borrowed heavily from but superior and more accessible than the bhagavad gita or the vedas.』

(Journey of Searching for Self)
『My friend gave this book to me while my heart was in terrible turmoil and my life was a mass. Osho's teaching did help me a lot. He gives a new interpretation of how we search for a more spiritual, happy life, and to see into one's self more clearly. He talks about the difference between brain and mind, and encourages us to flow with nature, to flow with the true existence, then to be able to enjoy the real harmony in the deep heart. I felt so touched during the reading. The best is that I gain the courage and begin to believe that everyone can be happy and to love and be loved completely. Now I am working on it. If you are looking for a way to be peaceful and joyful, I am pleased to recommand this book to you all.』
Much of what is known as yoga today emphasizes physical postures and exercises to increase flexibility and help relaxation. But in fact, yoga has its roots in centuries of rigorous investigation and research in the East to develop an understanding of human consciousness and its potential.

InYoga, Osho explains the meaning of some of the most important Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an early "scientist of the soul" who is credited with being the father of Raja Yoga, or the "royal path" of yoga that uses physical postures and breath primarily as a means to achieve higher states of consciousness. With a fresh translation of these ancient texts, and unique Osho insights into the modern mind and its psychology, Patanjali comes to life on the pages with an approach to using yoga for greater self-understanding that is absolutely relevant to our times.

An invaluable resource for beginning or experienced yoga practitioners, and for anyone who seeks to better understand the intricate and powerful relationship that exists between body and mind

(inspiring, gentle and deep)
『I also found this at a bargain bin at a big bookstore and got it because it said it was simple, appropriate to beginners and exactly 30 minutes long, which is the minimum amount of time I am trying to exercise daily. I am very exercise adverse but Yolanda's quiet encouragement and stress free pacing has become really addictive to me and since actually getting me to exercise is my number one obstacle, I consider this a major plus. Encouraged by this to try other DVD's, so far I have found them jarring and intense, with insufficient warm up and little to no spiritual quality at all. I have always been turned off by "yoga martinets" who seem only interested in the disciplining the body like a wayward child. This is not what yoga is about IMHO. No slouch herself, Yolanda warms you up and down and has a heartfelt but low key quality I love. I feel excellent afterwards!

I researched Yolanda a tiny bit and gather that she has had a major transformation in her own life; yoga has apparently been a big part of creating that new life for her. She offers fairly traditional poses but apparently not just the easiest versions ever, as far as I can gather from my reading of Yoga Journal online. Yoga Journal - as well as Yolanda's own book - offer tips for improving postures and getting the most out of it. (Of course actual teachers are good too! LOL) Based on my considerable experience with tai chi, I would say that Simply Yoga DVD is "deceptively simple" and that one should not be too quick to underestimate what you can get from it. Like anything, the more effort you put in, the better the results will be.

For those starting at zero, in not the greatest shape but looking for rapid but gentle improvement, I think this is a real winner. I may advance to other DVDs and live teachers but I think this is a real keeper. Her understated spiritual qualities far exceed any other DVD presentation I have seen so far. I hope she makes a meditation CD! I've done a lot of visualization but I can see that she is an excellent teacher and would be a good guide into deeper meditations.』

(A decent start for yoga newbies with huge color pictures of the basic asanas)

Simply Yoga is a great intro book for yoga novices. Large color pics of the instructor concentrate on one pose or stretch on each two page spread. This is very helpful for newbies - you can flip though it to memorize the names of the poses.

So with this book, when a yoga beginner's DVD says to enter Child's Pose or Cobra Pose, they can go right to it without having to crane their necks up to the TV - they can just look down at the pose in the book.

The book also points out where one should be breathing in each part of the step. There are two pages of Corpse Pose that offer three different breathing techniques.

Recommended for newbies and early beginners to yoga postures.』

(Excellent for beginners)
『I have the boxed version with the DVD and the flashcards. I was very active in the past but now I am in horrible shape and have finally made the decision to do something about it. I plan to use this DVD every other day to help increase my flexibility (I am very stiff and inflexible right now). I've tried a few other yoga DVDs but I came back to this one because it is the level I need. It is slow and you have time to recover from each position (again, I need that pace). Yolanda's voice is very soothing, encouraging and relaxing, and she gives good reminders to breathe in the right places. It is true that she does not give a lot of technical info on the DVD, so watch it once first and review the book/flash cards as well. The 30 minute length is perfect and I hardly notice the time go by. I strongly recommend this DVD for someone who is starting out just like me. I know that I will eventually move up to other yoga programs (like Kathy Smith's) but this is what I need right now.』

(Excellent Beginners Workout)
『I would wholeheartedly recommend this video/dvd for beginner yoga...Yolanda has a very relaxing voice - it's a doable exercise and doesn't have you in all the twists and bends and harder poses that come in a more advanced yoga class. I've been using this for about 3 months now 3 times a week and find that it is really working my muscles and toning me up. I'm in my mid 50's and just love it!!! AND it's only 30 minutes long so it doesn't take up so much of your day! If you are thinking about yoga and looking at getting into it, then i urge you to think about this one - you will feel energized and relaxed at the same time!』

(Best Yoga)
『I want to encourage anyone that wants to incorporate Yoga into their healthy lifestyle to consider purchasing this book and DVD. In the book the author describes the details of each posture and also the importance of the various aspects of yoga, such as breathing and nutrition. In the DVD she calmly instructs the viewer in each pose of the sequence. During this she continues to remind the viewer how to breathe during each posture. I had originally borrowed this book/DVD from my local library and then pursued purchasing it because I had purchased several others by different authors and was disappointed. If anyone knows of other Yoga DVD's by Yolanda Pettinato I would appreciate the information, and how to purchase. Thank-you』
