(respect your body!)
『The cover picture alone should be enough to avoid picking up, let alone buying this book. Yoga specially for us 'older bodies' should be gentle and challenging, not impossible!』

(Still Trying!)
『I bought this book to add some new challenges to my novice yoga routine. I would like to be able to say that I have actually added them, but I have not. The information was good and the pictures helpful.』

(Older people people doing incredible poses, Discouraging!)
『I thought it would be a beginner's guide but I guess the astounding photographs of older people doing incredible poses was meant to inspire. It didn't help me get started!』

(A book for all ages)
『This book would be helpful for anyone (of any age), it is very readable and understandable. Buy it and you (too) will be pleased』

(the best for elder yoga addicts)
『I loved this book for it's optimistic and practical attitude towards aging.

Many seniors are searching for ways to improve their quality of life and remain active as they enter midlife and later years. Nationwide, people are recognizing yoga for its ability to slow down and reverse the aging process. A complete health system, yoga not only restores vitality to the body, but also expands the mind and soul. Yoga transforms the years after 50 from a time of deterioration to one of increased perspective and illumination.

InThe New Yoga for People Over 50, readers will learn how the health of the spine and posture affect every sustem of the body, and how yoga positions and breathing exercises benefit the circulatory system, the heart and other vital organs, relieve menopausal symptoms, and remove stiffness and inertia from the body. In this comprehensive guide, Iyengar yoga expert Suza Francina describes and illustrates how to begin and maintain a yoga program through personal stories and over 100 easy-to-follow instructional photos of older teachers and students.

『"No segment of our population can benefit more from yoga than people over 50," says author Suza Francina, Iyengar yoga instructor and director of the Ojai Yoga Center, where she specializes in classes for people over 50.The New Yoga for People over 50shows how to adapt traditional postures to suit any age or fitness level with step-by-step instructions aimed at the older beginner. Photographs, quotes, and personal stories of yoga teachers and students--many in their 70s and older--add inspiration.

One key to modifying postures for older, stiffer bodies is the use of props that provide support to let the yoga student get into strenuous postures and hold them longer without pain or fatigue. The book illustrates how to adapt many postures with the aid of chairs, walls, wall ropes, bolsters, back-bending benches, and straps. Yoga decreases stiffness and inertia, and enhances health, energy, flexibility, posture, breathing, independence, and balance (physical and emotional). Francina explains how yoga may prevent the shortening and rounding of the spine and ward off osteoporosis. This book is an excellent companion to a yoga class or an inspiration to begin one.--Joan Price

(Wonderful experience)
『I highly recommend this cd, it's a great way to go deep inside a meditation stage』

(Best sleeping mediation type CD for me)
『I bought at least eight medication type CDs from Amazon, and this one is by far the best. I like the intuitive nature of the CD...if you are someone that loves the details and not the big picture, your experience might be different.

I don't have that much more to add, but this is from the perspective of someone that bought all competing products all at once and tried all of them.』

(Yoga Nidra CD)
『I was reading Martha Beck's book Steering by Starlight and she recommended Yoga Nidra, so I looked at this one and another, on Amazon and decided on this one. It doesn't seem to be any better or worse than any other guided imagery relaxation tapes. I must not be too impressed because I've only used it three times.』

(Very nice systematic relaxation and more!)
『This cd is very good as the eastern Indian voice is very easy to understand and the guided meditation led me into a deep state of heightened awareness. the 2nd track starts out with a long piece of music before you hear a voice again but it was appropriately spaced. Very good cd!』

(Happy with content)
『The DVD was excellent, but it arrived with a broken case, so really my gripe is with Amazon. They should have packaged it better. I love the Yoga Nidra though!』
『Two genuine relaxation methods from the Nyasa Tantra, 20 minutes and 45 minutes - and a piece of music. 20 page information booklet included.

Swami Janakananda guides you into a deep relaxation of body and mind. He also uses the tantric mantras and visual symbols to awaken and harmonize the chakras. With a background of nature sounds and music. Roop Verma, on sitar, is the first musician to record the chakras' ancient music symbols.』

『Very good book. Gives lots of basic info on many topics in yoga. Good, quick reminder of topics for yoga instructors.』
『This chunky, richly colorful volume takes yoga "beyond the mat" to reveal classic yogic wisdom pertaining to the mind, emotions, spirit, and of course, the body. Drawing from such classical texts as theBhagavad Gitaand theUpanishads, as well as modern Indian and Western teachers, this treasure trove of yoga knowledge defines key terms and highlights important themes. It's also a helpful supplement to yoga classes, offering asanas, meditations, breathing exercises, mantras, and mudras for every occasion and skill level. (Haven't Bothered To Use It Yet)
『I have a previous book by the same author. I have yet to use it, and will probably do the same with this one. The reason is simple. I don't want to have to go out and buy about 6 Yoga blankets, bolsters, folding chairs and belts, ropes and other items that are pictured in order to do most of the positions. If I had all these items, thinking of where to store them all and the thought of dragging them out every day in order to do my exercises is a complete turn off to me and my aging body.』

(Great Resource!)
『As a brand new yoga teacher (at age 62), I find Suza Francina's latest book, "The New Yoga for Healthy Aging", to be a great resource. I teach in the 55+ community where I live, so many of my students have health challenges. I often refer to the chapters on teaching seniors, as well as those dealing with specific health issues, like hip replacement (I have two in class), arthritis and osteoporosis. I also like to share quotes from Suza and the other senior teachers featured in her book with my students. I highly recommend this book for new teachers and older students as well.

(Very good book.)
『With the innumerable yoga books on the market and the attempts of companies trying to make a buck of the yoga boom I am leary of buying any products, including books, marketed for yoga. Also, from my own experiences I feel many reviews give an exaggerated view of the books.

However, this book is truly a good book. I am 49 yrs old and have been practicing yoga for almost 5 years, two to four times a day. I am constantly trying to find out more about books, DVDs, websites etc on yoga related items in order to improve and deepen my practice. I am glad I bought this one.

For someone who recovered from a severe and incapacitating lower back injury with the practice of yoga asanas, this book is a reaffirmation of my own experiences. Had I not taken to an asana pracitce, I know for a fact that my injury would have made a "cash cow" out of me for the "medical professionals" in our health care system. More importantly the book offers tremendous inspiration, hope and encouragement to the aging -- which includes all -- and people recovering from chronic pain. It does this by sketching the lives of those who have been practicing yoga asanas.

I assure you that if you are serious about your mental, physical and emotional health, and if you have had a year of yoga and want to give your practice a boost then this book will not let you down. It will confirm your realizations and build on them regarding the healing potential of yoga asanas. I have already bought two copies and will be buying numerous more to give to everyone I know. This will save them a lot of pain and suffering as they grow older, not to mention the expenses of a medical system that is absolutely out of control. In my opinion and experiences medical science itself is shallow and flawed despite the many sincere practitioners. People suffering from chronic ailments are a testimony to this claim.

The writer has done a very good job of writing this book. Thank you Suza.

(Praise for The New Yoga for Healthy Aging)
『"The New Yoga for Healthy Aging is one of the most exciting yoga books ever published. Its promise is one that millions of baby boomers will find comforting--that yoga is a natural prescription for reversing the aging process. The proof is in the lovely and inspiring photographs of yoga students in their later years in poses of beauty and strength. This outstanding resource addresses the common ailments of aging and is as encouraging as it is informative and practical. Suza Francina shows how even challenging yoga poses become "do-able" through the use of props and modifications. Her extensive knowledge and experience teaching yoga is evident and her wisdom and deep caring shine through her words and stories. "

(A manual for over 50 yogis and their instructors)
『Suza Francina's book "The New Yoga for Healthing Aging" is a must-have for anyone over 50 as well as for those of us who work with the aging baby boomer population. This book is chock full of inspiring photos of seniors in different asanas, sage advice and some sample routines. I can't believe that some of these people are over 90! Wow!

Francina is Iyengar-based, so many of the poses are shown with props and there is good information on how to use the props safely. In this book you can also find medical research and advice on using yoga for a variety of conditions including arthritis, osteoporosis, hip replacements, alzheimer's and parkinsons. Many of the seniors in the book share their stories on how yoga has helped them with their issues, and this can be very encouraging for people who may be fearful of trying yoga.

Especially helpful are the suggestions for getting up and down from the floor and the section on teaching seniors. Any teacher who works with the aging population will find these parts invaluable! I hope that this book can not only help me to be mindful of my teaching skills but also about my own aging body.』

(An excellent book)
『I just recently started the Flexeffect program by Deborah Crowley which I just love. She encourages us to be inventive and so with this book I've been able to combine some different and extra exercises.
The pictures (in this book) of each exercise are very clear and the explanations concise so that you don't have to wade through heaps of information first.
Diligence and patience is the key and with any facial exercises you definitely see a difference. As with most exercises it's best to cover if not all, then most of the them, as each muscle is connected.
I highly recommend it!』

(A major letdown.)
『I bought this book for someone who I know has a strong interest in this kind of thing, after reading the good reviews for it here, but I felt bad about giving it once I'd received it and had a chance to look inside.
The text was small and very faint, (if I recall correctly, a light mauve on a white background. - If I'm wrong then hopefully someone will correct me) and the pictures inside were all in black and white and not easy to see what one had to do. The main thing that came across to me though is that most of the models used looked young enough not to have to worry about doing facial yoga (presumably the book is aimed at people over a certain age whose faces have become old-looking in some way) and the older models looked old and not conducive to giving anyone confidence in the techniques being advocated, especially the author herself who looked her age and really one would have expected her to look a lot younger than her years if anyone is expected to have any faith in this technique.
The person I gave the book to, thanked me very much at the time, before looking at it, but has not mentioned it at all since, and this speaks volumes to me, as they normally would mention something they feel pleased with. All I can say to anyone thinking of purchasing this book, is try to get hold of a copy to look inside before you buy as it may not be what you are looking for. Quite apart from the disappointing content, the book was very cumbersome and awkward to hold owing to the shape and size of it.』

(You will benefit)
『This otherwise great book fails to get five stars for only 2 reasons: 1) the neck exercises didn't produce noticeable results for me personally (I'm going to try Carole Maggio's book for that reason alone); and 2)the author dismisses the importance of aerobic exercise, and in fact, calls it aging.
That may be true for aerobic enthusiasts who overdo it, but imho, it's a critical component of good health and looking youthful. I'm 47 and still get carded so I vouch for the importance of exercise.
Having said that, I started noticing areas of my face that I wasn't thrilled with. Lip lines that were getting worse rather than better, lines on the side of my nose, and upper lids that could use some lift.
Bam! Immediate improvement. I agree with some of the other reviewers: it's very cool to have full, voluptuous lips. My eye area is tighter, brighter (no crow's feet whatsoever, but in fairness, I didn't have that many to begin with) and my nose lines (from squinting) are gone. My cheeks are full and my jaw line is tighter.
Why my neck didn't reap the same benefits, I'm not sure. I've been doing these exercises since June 2007 and that area is the least improved.
Just my two cents, hope it helps.』

(Waste of Time)
『This book was a big disappointment and I do not recommend it. Get it from the library if you are curious, but don't waste your money. I did!』

(men can benefit too)
『I am very impressed with Marie's approach, which addresses the concerns I have with most facial exercise programs. Exercise does work, but it has to be the right kind of exercise, and not the sort that causes the skin to wrinkle even more. Since I've begun doing these exercises I have been very happy with the results and changes I see. I have also noticed a marked improvement in my wife's face. Great book to get you thinking about how, if you don't like the way you look, you can become proactive about it.』
『Women and men alike can reclaim their face withThe Yoga Facelift, an exercise, energetics, and meditation program specifically designed by Marie-Véronique Nadeau for the most prominent feature of the body. We are inundated with exercise programs to tone abs, biceps, triceps, and insteps, but none to exercise and maintain the most hardworking set of muscles in our entire body, the face!

Nadeau has devised a holistic method for ridding the face of frown lines, reducing extra chins, and eradicating chicken neck. Her book is filled with useful charts, instructive photographs, and simple and natural exercises that readers can do in just five or ten minutes every day while waiting in traffic, talking on the phone, or working in front of the computer, all the while taking years off their face.

(Yoga and the quest for the true self)
『This is the most wonderful and skilful book I have ever read on yoga as it is so wonderfully truthful about yoga. Both of Stephen Cope books are a must for any true yogi, I have loved his work and his depth of insight into yoga. Stephen brings the light to the truth of yoga, which we all know can be confusing and frustrating. So thank you Stephen for clearing up the yoga monopoly and all the misunderstanding that has been evident for century in the yoga fraternity. I am so very grateful I can now hand on this wisdom of truth to my yoga students to embrace. thank you!』

(Top 5 books I've ever read.)
『I rank Cope's work right up there with Prisoners of Childhood by Alice Miller. This book shed light on some of my own experience and gave voice to spiritual yearnings of my own. This is a yoga of transformation. Excellent.』

(Insightful and Accessible)
『I so enjoyed reading this book. I very much felt that this book is written for real people who are skeptical/curious about yoga philosophy. Cope takes you through step by step how and why yoga works using real language not hippie/bliss out language seen in other yoga books. Also, for someone who is familiar with psychotherapy and wanting to add a spiritual dimension to their self-care this book is invaluable in merging the two lines of thinking. This book was very influential to me - I plan to refer to it much as I continue to develop my yoga practice.』

(Honest, Deep and Practical. A Life Changing Book !)
『Yoga and the Quest for the True Self is definitely one of the best (if not the best) and most useful books I've ever read. It truly speaks to developing a mature, real life approach to spirituality.

Stephen Cope writes from a perspective that I feel really speaks to the Western spiritual seeker. He combines his experience and knowledge as a psychotherapist with his knowledge of Yoga and other spiritual paths.

While Yoga is a path of union, it appears only too clear that without removing the layers of psychological baggage, union with the divine cannot truly mainfest in ones life. All of the spiritual insights and epiphanies will never be more than a transparent veil placed thinly over the unresolved baggage. Insights without fertile ground to take root will soon fade or be used as another vehicle for ego building.

The author makes clear that the mature path of Yoga is not one of renunciation, or a solitary journey, but explains that "as spiritual practice matured in India there arose a radical new understanding of the paradox of action and inaction. This was the doctrine of inaction in action, and goes further to explain that Krishna teaches in the "Gita" to "Act in the world in alignment with your true vocation, your true self etc....." Clearly not a path of renunciation or a solitary path but one that involves action IN the world.

I found this book really spoke to me as a person on the spiritual path in a way that is truly transformative and not just a bunch of religious dogma. Using his own personal experiences and the experiences of other seekers throughout the book, he has woven a beautifully written guide that is really eye opening and practical. It clearly put into perspective many things that I have either personally struggled with or wondered about.

Stephen Cope makes no claims to be an enlightened master with "wisdom from on high"nor is he trying to "convert" anyone to a particular spiritual path. He explains how the various tools of yoga can help us become more in touch with our true selves. How the process and practice of Hatha Yoga for example, isn't just physical exercise but a spiritual and yet practical process that can help people grow by becoming grounded in their own bodies. At the same time one can work at developing their witness consciousness thru the process of Hatha Yoga.

Of the many things I took away from the book, one particularly valuable was the "mantra" Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch, Allow" which can be used in Hatha Yoga practice, meditation, or even in one's ordinary life when they are scattered and want to become grounded, focused and internally centered.

Some have mistakenly concluded that the author's final assessment is that all of his spiritual practice was for nothing. While there is a "moment" in the book where Cope leaves in the middle of a retreat, a retreat that he had preconceived notions of it's outcome , that is not by any means the conclusion of the book. Actually the crux of what Stephen Cope comes to realize after refelecting on his10 years or so of practice is that "In the entire path of yoga, there is really only one lesson...... Whenever we relinquish our craving, clinging and grasping, whenever we stop the war with reality and are totally present and undivided, we are immediately in union with our true nature".

The book also talks about the Kripalu Center and it's own growth, through the early years with founder Amrit Desai, to his (Desai's) fall from grace, and how this community matured rather than fell apart in the midst of this controversy.

It also explains much about the "false" Guru phenomena. In particular what happens when disciples own needs for an "all knowing father" can in their own way create a monster of their own making.

If you are a Yoga practitioner who wants to go "beyond the postures" as strictly physical exercise, or a spiritual seeker of any faith who wants to read a book that speaks with honesty and depth, intelligence and insight (and to "real people") then I highly recommend this book.』

(Yoga for the Western Student)
『In the world of yoga practice here in the United States, one often wonders how to incorporate all of the spiritual knowledge of the ancient texts with what we know about ourselves from a contemporary, psychological perspective. The synthesis of these two very valid traditions has found it's pinnacle in Stephen Cope's "Yoga and the Quest for the True Self". Written by a man who has has LIVED the practices under the tutelage of a guru in spiritual community, we find that our struggles of ego vs. nonattachment, compassion vs. reaction, etc. are universal. Here we learn that we are not alone in our self-study and find a guidebook for our journey. This book is a must-have for the modern, western yogi or yogini.』
『Millions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as a 4,000-year-old practical path of liberation—a path that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. Now Stephen Cope, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than ten years at the largest yoga center in America, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent "pilgrim's progress" for today's world. He demystifies the philosophy, psychology, and practice of yoga, and shows how it applies to our most human dilemmas: from loss, disappointment, and addiction, to the eternal conflicts around sex and relationship. And he shows us that in yoga, "liberation" does not require us to leave our everyday lives for some transcendent spiritual plane—life itself is the path. Above all, Cope shows how yoga can heal the suffering of self-estrangement that pervades our society, leading us to a new sense of purpose and to a deeper, more satisfying life in the world.』
『Despite skeptical jibes from his well-meaning friends, Stephen Cope set off for a four-month yoga retreat in rural Massachusetts. Ten years later, he is still there. A psychotherapist left in the lurch after a long-term relationship, Cope was experiencing the same deep questioning of life that he had witnessed so often in his practice. His self-prescribed antidote was to pursue a life of contemplation and inner discovery that he had felt drawn to for some time.Yoga and the Quest for the True Selfis Cope's chronicle of self-discovery. Cope is at turns frank in describing his own obstacles and epiphanies, brotherly in relating anecdotes of friends and patients on similar quests, and clinical in his trenchant psychological summations of why we find ourselves estranged and how yoga and meditation bring us back to clear awareness. Like Mark Epstein'sGoing to Pieces Without Falling Apart,Yoga and the Quest for the True Selfis a milestone in the melding of Eastern and Western methods of personal transformation.--Brian Bruya

Beautifully written, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in good health and for teachers who like me, love to help others help themselves: by learning the natural healing mechanics of the body. Remember, just do what suits you, there are postures with cushions, bolsters, and sometimes a chair. Enjoy!』

(The woman's book of yoga and health)
『I love this book! It was recommended to me by my yoga instructor and I am really pleased I took her advice. The book contains chapters and sections dedicated to different issues women face through their lifetime. The book is divided into chapters and sections that address different issues, and the suggested sequences are well described and illustrated and very achievable. I particularly like the way the poses are offered in sequences as in the past I have had difficulty deciding in what order to practice poses at home. The illustrations and instructions for each pose are very clear, and an explanation of the effects and benefits of each pose is included. Overall, a great book and one I believe I will continue to use for many years. My 18 year old daughter and 25 year old niece have also been reguarly reading and using the book.』

(Informative)
『Comprehensive, well presented and informative book. I would have like to have seen more on pregnancy though.』

(This is excellent. I would LOVE a disc accompaniment)
『I've done Bikram yoga for two years and am trying to broaden my experience. This book is one of the best I've found. It includes several complete, balanced sequences to do at home, which is a concern of mine since many dvds don't deliver a balanced workout and many books don't help a novice construct one. I am 48 and it addresses physical issues of mine with knowledge and compassion -- and I'm buying my 16-year-old daughter a copy, for the same reason. She will have to share it with me.

The only way this book could be improved would be if the authors would issue a dvd or audio cd of the sequences, so I could focus on doing them instead of reading the directions.』

The Woman's Book of Yoga and Healthis the first comprehensive book about women's health issues and how to treat them with yoga. The authors offer a complete yoga program for general health as well as pose sequences that address specific health problems—all in the Iyengar tradition, which targets health needs more than other forms of yoga. For example, in the first part of the book, Patricia Walden has organized three chapters showing yoga poses with clear instructions that tell how to get into each pose and describe its benefits: chapter one isthe Essential Sequence for all women, and includes modifications for people who cannot or should not do all the poses; chapter two is the Restorative Sequence for stress relief and relaxation; chapter three contains advanced poses that energize and tone. The second part is presented in four sections that broadly represent the stages of a woman's life: teen years and early twenties, later twenties and thirties, midlife, and wisdom years. Each section contains chapters offering specific information about a particular health issue from author Linda Sparrowe, as well as sequences of yoga poses from Patricia Walden that address the problem. For example, the back care chapter includes information about common back problems and their causes (scoliosis, arthritis, lordosis, sciatica, kyphosis, among others) with an emphasis on: emotional and psychological roots of some back problems; physiological information about the spine and back muscles; general information about how yoga addresses different areas of the back; and finally, Patricia Walden's sequences of poses that target different back problems with the goal of not only relieving back pain but of strengthening, and healing old injuries and misalignments. Sections of the book include: Teens and Early 20s: Eating disorders, menstrual health, immune support 20s and 30s: Back care, pregnancy, headaches Midlife: Depression, menopause, digestion Wisdom Years: Osteoporosis, postmenopause, the heart The final section of the book includes listings of yoga centers, instructional videos, yoga equipment, and where to go for more information about yoga.』

(Pleasant Dreams)
『Buy this book immediately if you have a sincere interest in dream practices. The information is appropriate for the beginner as well as the advanced yogi. Don't waste one third of your life in the sleep of ignorance. Make it the fertile pure land it is when seen clearly.』

(Ultimate Dreaming)
『Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche presents Tibetan dream yoga in full detail, and most importantly, fully contextualizes its practice in the Dzogchen spiritual tradition. As I slowly worked my way through this illuminating book it increasingly dawned on me that this work was not only the clearest practical manual on dream yoga ever penned, but that it ranks as one of the most enlightening spiritual treatises I have ever encountered. The author starts by outlining the conceptual foundations of Dzogchen teachings as related to dream yoga, then presents preliminary practices necessary for developing the "mental muscles" needed for genuine engagement in the rigors of dream and sleep yoga. Then comes the meat of the text, where Tenzin Wangyal elucidates all the elements for the complete practice of these esoteric yogas. He repeatedly stresses that the ultimate aim must be a consistent abiding in clear, non-dual awareness, or "rigpa"--throughout waking, dreaming, sleeping, and ultimately in dying (bardo). As heavy as this sounds, the author actually carries it all out with the light touch of a true master. He gently leads the reader into a realm of wondrous mystery...』

(Brilliant!!! THE OLDEST SPIRITUAL PRACTICE WILL BE ADOPTED BY WEST Eventually!)
『Very hip writing about PREPARING FOR DEATH... Amazing material being able to see life as a dream and hence waking up in your dreams to transcend death, and the subject of a new Hollywood big budget sci fi film, CONVERGENCE, by a director named Wake.
Simple and beautiful. Achieves what Casteneda makes complicated. But we know this one is real.』

(Book by Rinpoche)
『I highly recommend this Book on Dreaming and Sleep. It's very enlightening.』

(alternative info on lucid dreaming)
『I think this is a really good book to get some alternative info on lucid dreaming. I still prefer Stephen Laberges EWLD, but this one is great in a different way. I'm not into buddhism. And if you don't have any experience with buddhism, then it's not very easy/clear. You'll just have to ignore some of the buddhist slang to get the best out of it. Anyway, it's nice to read about the subject from a different angle.』
『The yogas of dream and sleep are used in the Bon and Buddhist traditions of Tibet to attain liberation.』
