『I bought this book because I wanted a different take on Ashtana Yoga to David Swenon's "Ashtanga Yoga: 'The Practice Manual'". I have practiced yoga off and on since I was 14. I am 25 now and thus have more than a decade of trying to do yoga- primarily with the use of books- as I do not have the kind of money it requires to get a good teacher i.e. $100-150/month- but I have had 3 months or so with a good teacher.

Positive Criticism:
If you are learning from a class and an instructor, Pegrum's book is pretty much a very terse flip book of asanas and could help you remember the names, and basic ideas to remember when practicing these asanas. She also describes Ujjayi breathing in some detail, which again is a very important part of Ashtanga Yoga.

Negative Criticism:
If you are trying to learn from a book or learn something more than what your instructor has shown you this is not the book for you. This book is incomplete in terms of a description of the type of asanas described, the directions for each asana, and also how to do the rediculously difficult - at least at the beginning- half vinyasa. The main problem I found with this book is that the descriptions given to each asana are so terse that you have a problem knowing if you are doing the asana properly.

These statements were made after comparing Pegrum's "Ashtanga Yoga: The Complete mind and Body Workout" to David Swenson's "Ashtanga Yoga: 'The Practice Manual'". If Swenson's book and Pegrum's book are compared Swenson' has a far superior book for learning Ashtanga by one's self and even if you plan to have a teacher Swenson's book is still superior if you like descriptions of asanas that deal both with how to get into a pose eventually from a rather inflexible body to how one can get into a pose having a body like a yogi. Not everyone thinks like me so Pegrum's book might suit another person very well but I felt that something should be said about what I think is an inferior product.

(Does a good job of breaking down the series)
『I enjoyed this book immensely. The book breaks down the Primary Series into workable parts. The book starts with the two Sun Salutations, then it goes into the standing postures, the seated postures, advanced seated postures, and finishing/closing postures. This book does a good job of offering some modifications to some of the poses. Berly Benders "Power Yoga" does an even better job, but this book is quite good to get started with. Pegrum demonstrates the poses with tremondous competency, and makes them look almost attainable :-). Overall, this is a good book to start with.』

It contains very clear photos and detailed instructions for each pose/sequence along with the benefits of each pose. The introduction talks about the origins of yoga, the 8 limbs, etc and basically how to get the best out of your practice (touching on routine, diet, etc). Probably best suited for individuals who have already been introduced to yoga (at any level).』

(More Peices to the puzzle, but...)
『I enjoyed reading this book, as it is a very informative and easy book to read. There is a lot to learn when it comes to Egyptian Deities and this book gives some nice insights. A very good breakdown when it comes to Nut, Geb and Shu and their function in creation. Dr. Muata Ashby also gives a very good explanation of the Obelisk and Ankh and their esoteric sexual meanings. I was glad to see that this book included some sexual sublimation exercises although brief and simplistic. Still, this may be a good thing. What I also found most beautiful were the insights and connections to Christian esotericism.

This book is by no means exhaustive when it comes to information on Tantra. It does however have many beautiful insights into the Egyptian Tantra mysteries, while holding that one abstains from losing ones sexual energy. My one big problem that I have with this book is Dr Muata Ashby's view that Tantra can be performed just as effectively through celibacy. Still, he mentions that if you are married to not think that you are worse off than a celibate person and to remain married. I hold that Tantra performed by a couple can produce greater energies and potentials than of a single person. This is of course for couples who both have the goal of spiritual advancement at heart. I am of course talking about White Tantra as opposed to grey or Black (even exluding morality, the latter are a waste of time ultimately). I am however glad to see that Dr Muata Ashby does say that marriage provides a great environment for people to work on themselves. I have ordered five more of Dr Muata Ashby's other books and am especially eager to read on the laws of Maat. On the whole a very worth while book to read for those interested in Tantra and liberation.

『I think that this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Kriya Yoga Lineage of Gurus starting with Lahiri Mahasaya. It was written by Swami Satyananda Giri, who was a close friend of Yogananda's since boyhood, and who was in charge of the Ranchi school for boys after Yogananda left for America in 1920. He was also a disciple of Swami Sri Yukteswar, he knew Shastri Mahasaya, and he personally knew many disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya. He was also an accomplished Kriya Yogi and Guru. Because of the above, he was in a unique position to write these 4 biographies with authority, and his warmth and devotion are very evident in his writing. I found it very inspiring and enjoyable to read. While the translation has not been grammatically changed into precisely proper English, the sentence structure reads the same way that many people from India talk. Only rarely did I have to re-read a sentence carefully to decipher the meaning. Yoga Niketan has done a great service in translating this book, and several other invaluable books on Kriya Yoga, into English.』

『A fantastic account of the lives of some of the key figures from the Babaji Line of Gurus, most well known in the US, through Paramhansa Yogananda.

The greatest insight is that even God-inspired people still have to face the myriad difficulties of the real world in moving forward.

Many US accounts and discourses gloss over the difficulties, presenting a stream of accomplishments only.

Sri Yukteswar's teaching and the syllabus at the Ranchi school emphasized martial arts and business success as well as spiritual pursuits. Yogananda built on that framework, adding general culture in the reading of scientific journals and classics, all of this a far cry from the narrow emphasis on yoga technique commonly espoused in the US,

Sri Yukteswar emphasizes in the book "that for the collective and individual prosperity of human beings, it was necessary to have the self-sufficiency of the Vaisas [commerce caste], the valor of the Kshatriyas [military and administration class] and, in the same type of environment, the Brahmin [priest and scholar caste] establishment of religion. Without having personal experience of the company of high and virtuous beings, it was not possible in life to have the elevated injunction of the service oriented mind of the Sudras [service caste]."』


(A unique biographical account of four great masters)
『This book is actually a four-in-one book, containing a collection of 4 spiritual biographies written by Swami Satyananda Giri, a disciple of Swami Sriyukteshvar.

If a reader would like to find new information regarding the lives of these spiritual masters, he/she would find it in this book. New refreshing information about Yogananda in this book also acts as a great complement to the famous book, "Autobiography of a Yogi". In fact, the reader would find many new interesting information about the lives of these beings which are not being presented in the "Autobiography of a Yogi, 2nd Edition: The Original 1946 Edition plus Bonus Material".

The author's lack of interest with supernatural powers must also be commended here. In "Autobiography of a Yogi" there seems to be much emphasis on these powers, but the reader would not find this evident here. This is indeed a refreshing style to more "serious minded" spiritual seekers.

However, I must warn the future reader that the grammar and sentence construction in this book does not come up to standard, which is done intentionally by the translator of this book. This is to prevent any misinterpretation from arising as a result of translating this work. Thus, a reader with a good command of the English language language, would find it a bit difficult in understanding what the author is trying to say. I must also add that the style and manner in which the "Autobiography of a Yogi" is presented is much more sophisticated than the style of the English language being written here.

In conclusion, aside from the minor concerns of the structure and usage of the English language in this book, I would highly recommend this book to all those followers of "Kriya Yoga". A small explanation by the author of this work at the end of this book also provides the reader with some very useful information on Kriya Yoga as well.』

As a group fitness instructor and instructor trainer, I found the information provided by James Hewitt to be a comprehensive background into the three focus areas of yoga and the information provided was very helpful during class with my students. There were only two drawbacks to this introductory book in my point of view. One was the quality of the illustrations which reminded me of something that had been photocopied and the second was that while interesting, I will say most of the Yoga of Meditation section's information was very foreign in concept to grasp.Perhaps it designed that way on purpose to provide a spark of interest in the reader to pursue further indepth study. Overall, an excellent primer into Yoga theory and practice.』
