(Self-Awakening Yoga:the Expansion of consciousness through the Body's Own Wisdom) 『I am thrilled with the knowledge that Don Stapleton is sharing with us in his somewhat biographical work that introduces intuitive yoga for beginners or advanced students alike. I am working through a torn rotator cuff on my left arm that is frozen shut. Don overcame severe scoliosis by listening to the wisdom of his body, and that has given me hope for my condition. Each week I am slowly getting in touch with the right movements that are indeed healing my arm and whole body. Peace of mind is an added side-effect. I would recommend this book to anyone who has avoided yoga because they are afraid of not doing each movement "correctly." Don teaches you to find your own "correct" movements.』
(I give it 10 stars!) 『I can't recommend this book highly enough. Before I started my yoga practice, I did Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement, which enabled me to do yoga without hurting myself. The combination of body awareness and yoga is imperative, something that all the yoga-as-fitness books and dvds seem to leave behind. Don's book is a series of inquiries into movement, much in the same way as the Feldenkrais method, but with more possibilities (in my estimation). Record yourself taping the inquiries, as Don suggests, and you will reap the enormous rewards awaiting you in this book. This book's practices changed the way I feel about my body and how I use it. It effected me so much I took a week long class with Don Stapleton, which if it is an endorsement, so be it; he is AMAZING, to say the least. Inspiring. Empowering. What more can I say?』
(The Essence of Yoga) 『Hello, I've been teaching yoga for a year now, different styles such as Fitness Yoga, Yoga for children, beginners yoga, yoga with the blind. I was finding that my students ( and myself !! ) really were never in a STATE of YOGA with our bodies while doing yoga poses. Then I dicovered Feldenkrais, which although it has many definitions, could be said to be movement awareness and education. Through it, I finally found a way to feel my entire being in the pose, and find an effortlessness to even the most challenging activities. Don Stapleton uses this same approach but makes it more user-friendly for someone with a yoga background, so we see familiar poses that he breaks down to their essence, then invites us to fully explore what our bodies do to get there. He goes deeper by also exploring how to feel the hara and the chakras, but this is not his main focus. I shudder to think how many times I have performed a simple cobra and didn't feel the subtle changes in my fingertips, my toes, my pelvis, and an effortless way to anchor my tailbone to the floor without the usual 'tighten the legs, tighten the buttocks' approach. This book has become my bible on how to connect with my body....the real essence of yoga, after all.
Just today I introduced a blind student to the basic techniques of scanning the body, noticing subtle changes in weight distribution etc and he started smiling...for the first time today he actually felt his entire body during Tree, including his ankles, his elbows, his fingertips. It was awe-inspiring. He also said today was the first day in his 57 year old life he understood the mind-body ocnnection. What better praise for a book.』
(Great physical exploration) 『I find the physical exploration of movement and alignment so relevant, for anyone teaching yoga or any physical moving art.』 『Takes yoga back to its roots as a creative learning process and an expansion of consciousness, not just a technique for health and fitness
• Provides simple techniques that enhance the free flow of prana to promote physical and emotional healing, self-discovery, and spiritual evolution
• Includes over 100 exercises and meditations for a self-structured practice
• Teaches how to release the body’s inefficient, painful patterns and to access unknown potentials through kinesthetic inquiries
• Includes 60-minute audio CD-V of four guided meditation exercises
When artist and professor Don Stapleton discovered yoga, it marked the beginning of a journey into the awakening powers ofprana--the energy of yogic purification--and the natural spiritual and healing properties of his own body. After 30 years of extensive yoga training, an accident left him with a severe injury to the spine. Faced with the challenge of physical recovery, Stapleton drew upon his knowledge of yoga to create a series of exercises that allowed him to recover freedom of movement, release emotional blockages, and unleash his spiritual and physical potential.
Self-Awakening Yogais the synthesis of Stapleton’s practice. More than 100 exercises--from focusing on the breath to accessing primal sound--show how to unlock the wisdom and power of prana to engage the body’s healing powers. His simple exercises and meditations focus on natural movements that encourage body awareness. Readers learn how to listen to what the body is saying before engaging in any specific yoga postures.Self-Awakening Yogatakes yoga back to its roots as a creative learning process and an expansion of consciousness, not just a technique for health and fitness.』

All of it very educational to the inquiring mind.』
(Lessons on Gnani Yoga) 『This paperback contains 12 lessons (266 pages) on Gnani ( a Sanskrit word meaning knowledge, cognizance, wisdom also transliterated as jnana or gyana)yoga. It was first published in 1906 in Great Britain. The title page describes the work as giving the "highest yogi teachings regarding the absolute and its manifestations". By this it means the principles by which the spiritual creation, evolution, and involution of the world and us happens mentally. After reading it I would not disagree with this claim. In the text there are a lot of rational arguments for monism as a theology and philosophy. There is an explanation of the philosophical basis for the Eastern religious doctrine of karma. This is good and helpful supplimentary material for those studying the fourth chapter of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. There is a clear discussion of some of the ways spiritual creation occurs inside of all of us and each of us (the many to the one and the one to the many). I believe I have benefited by my reading and study of this book and I plan to refer back to its clear presentation of this difficult subject matter in the future. I think there is a good possibiity that if more people understood the teachings in these lessons we would all be happier.』 『THIS BOOK GIVES THE HIGHEST YOGI TEACHINGS REGARDING THE ABSOLUTE AND ITS MANIFESTATIONS.』

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I want to discourage folks who are unfamiliar with jungian concepts from picking this right up. Start with a Marie Louis von Franz book (such as THE INTERPRETATION OF FAIRY TALES) so that you get some grounding in Jungian vocabulary. Afterwards, this book will be a little tough to follow, but if you stick it out you'll gain alot. The book is pretty esoteric although well organized and well written. If its Yoga you're interested in, Harris explains how you can use the technique of amplification to interpret the imagery in the asanas (postures) in order to gain psychological insight which will help you to add a mind-body connection to your yoga practice. If you are into Jung and not Yoga, well then, I don't know what you are waiting for, go take some yoga classes, then read this book.』
(Jung and Yoga) 『This book is an in-depth study of the parallels between yoga practices and Jungian analysis, and the implications of both for spiritual and psychological growth. It is an eminently practical approach to the subject that, on the one hand, focuses on the understanding of Jung's ideas as they may be experienced through bodywork, and, on the other, offers a new psychologicsl perspective to practitioners of bodywork. Many of us have endured a life not-yet-lived. In the mysterious place between the opposites, previously hidden energy brings psyche and body together, uniting them in the sacred union that gives birth to new consciousness and the gift of a life fully lived.』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (An atypical insight into the life of Jesus) 『This book is a recommended reading to all serious Bible students and scholars. It shows us on what Jesus actually taught and what he did not teach. It is an eye opening revelation in which it describes the differences between the Gospel of John and the other three Gospels of the New Testament. It also reveals the similarity of the teachings of the Siddhas to that of Christ. If one ones to know the real hidden meaning of Christianity, then this book is for you.』
(Revealing and Inspiring) 『I had long reflected on this subject, but all the books I picked up about Jesus were either too theological or too scholarly. I wanted the straight truth from someone with a mystical perspective, and finally I found it in this book. Govindan has distilled the work of many scholars and swept away 2000 years of religous baggage to unearth a portrait of Jesus as enlightened master. If you're into yoga, and you grew up Christian like I did, I think you'll find this book to be revealing and inspiring.』
(Rare Insight into the Underlying Nature of Christ's Teachings) 『This book offers rare insights into the true nature of the teachings of Christ (what little is known about it) and its harmonious theme shared with many great god-realized saints and yogis of ages past. This book is of special interest to two diverse groups - those who believe in a Creator but are confused by or unfamiliar with Christian teachings, and those who are Christians curious about the underlying truths common in all religions. A nice glossary of biblical and yoga terminology (Sanskrit, Greek, etc.) and a large bibliography for further reading make this book an exceptional learning tool.』
(Highly recommended for Christian spiritual seekers of all denominations.) 『Written by co-founder of the Yoga Siddha Research Project Marshall Govindan, The Wisdom of Jesus and the Yoga Siddhas is a unique spiritual resource giving insight into the original teachings of Jesus Christ, and also showing how Christ's words parallel the ancient yogic teachings of the Yoga Siddhas. The Wisdom of Jesus and the Yoga Siddhas further reveals how to apply this wisdom to one's own life, emphasizing the importance of seeking not simply to know God, but rather to know God through higher states of consciousness. Chapters discuss modern historical research of Jesus and early Christianity, the nature of Yoga as a philosophy and who the Yoga Siddhas were, what Jesus really did say and what He did not say, and much more. "Untold millions of Christians down through the centuries have been indoctrinated with the belief that 'I am a sinner, and there is nothing which I can do to escape eternal suffering in hell unless I accept Jesus as my personal savior.' Fear of God has replaced love for God in the psyche. Guilt, suppression of desires, internal division, skepticism and the glorification of suffering as imaged by Jesus on the cross has replaced the message of forgiveness, compassion, simplicity, truth, love, self-discipline, self-purification, detachment from materialistic desires, the presence of the Kingdom of God, mystical communion with it, and perfection which Jesus brought as his 'good news.' Highly recommended for Christian spiritual seekers of all denominations.』 『This book is addressed to serious Biblical students, Christians who are interested in comparing Eastern spiritual teachings with those of Christianity, and students of spiritual Yoga, otherwise known as Classical Yoga and Tantra, as well as students and practitioners of meditation and other spiritual disciplines. The discoveries of ancient manuscripts, and their analysis by independent critical scholars using scientific methods, provide much insight into the original teachings of Jesus. The sayings of Jesus, circulated orally during the first decades following his crucifixion are probably the most authentic source of his teachings that we have available today. These sayings are limited to a few dozen parables, aphorisms and sharp retorts, which were repeated in the oral tradition for two or three decades before they were eventually recorded by the anonymous writers of the Gospels. Remarkably, what Jesus taught through his parables and sayings exactly parallels the yogic teachings of the Yoga Siddhas. For those seeking to apply the wisdom of these sayings in their own life, the implications are clear. Seek not to know about God; instead, seek to know God through higher states of consciousness.』
『A newly revised an expanded version of a popular an unique work, this extraordinarily valuable introduction discussion of the philosophy of hath yoga is indispensable to any student of yoga. This clear and easy to follow exposition views hatha within the framework of raja yoga, the yoga of eight complements, as promulgated by Pantanjali, the author of Yoga Sutras, the most authoritative text on the science of yoga. Hatha should not be merely a system of physical exercise: this work emphasizes the paramount role that the mind plays in hatha yoga, and demonstrates how to elevate the practices of hatha to an inner spiritual experience. This study outlines how the practice of hatha yoga can serve as a means to understand the subtler essences of mind and prana and to prepare for meditation and the awakening of the kundalini force.』
IPhone 3G used's review (Too Big and Too Much Extraneous Information) 『Like most people interested in yoga, I have a few yoga books in my library. I got Yoga To Go by Paula Carino hoping for information specific to traveling and maintaining a yoga routine. While the book does that to some degree, I found its space taken up by too much extraneous information. The book could have been trimmed to be much smaller - therefore fitting in a purse or pocket. That would have been GREAT! Instead, it contains unnecessary information and becomes something only suitable for a backpack or actual luggage toting.
First, the good. The book does specifically talk about the situations you are likely to encounter while traveling. It talks about the stress of missing a flight, of waiting in line, the cramps of being seated for several hours running. It talks about the dearth of healthy food in many terminals, and the cramped size of the hotel room. These are exactly the situations I got the book to work through.
The book provides some solutions for these situations. If you are stuck at a bus stop in a not-so-great part of town, take time to people watch and observe just what this neighborhood's people are like. Get into a conversation with another person here - someone you might not normally talk with. You might learn some amazing things!
There are many, many pages of poses, all with clear photos and long descriptions including modifications. If you've never heard of a pose, this book will help you out.
But this leads into some of my disappointment with the book. Do we really need **153 pages of poses** (I am not kidding here) in a "easy to carry travel book"? They're not even broken out by situation. It is really like carrying a full, regular yoga book with you. I would much rather have had this be MUCH smaller (and therefore the book much more totable). Maybe 2-3 pages of "poses for waiting in line", 2-3 pages of "poses while waiting in a terminal/station, 2-3 pages of "ideas while in an airplane" and so on. You could quickly flip to the situation you were in and find a solution. As it is, you have to go digging through the huge selection to figure out what works best where you are.
If we're talking about actually being IN your hotel room - heck, you bring a travel mat and do your normal routine! That's not a big deal. And you don't need a "travel sized book" in that situation. You just back your normal yoga book, or a DVD for your laptop.
She recommends taking flammable substances - candles, incense - and lighting them in your hotel room. I don't imagine most hotels would be keen on this - and cruises expressly forbid it! She would have done much better to discuss the array of NON-flame involving options such as battery-powered tea lights, smelly jellies, a handful of coffee beans in a ziplock bag, and so on.
Even if you say "this book is for my in-room yoga and isn't really a travel book", I found it not as great as other books I own. She will show a series of photos up front, and then have multiple pages of description so you have to flip back and forth at each step to see what the photo was for that stage. It's a bit cumbersome.
In the dining area, I've written many, many articles on healthy dining while traveling. She misses most of the standard key ideas. She sort of mentions "look for salads", then starts pushing vegetarianism and then tells you to bring vegetarian meals from home. In most travel situations that simply isn't going to work (if you even are a vegetarian).
Finally, some of the information is simply incorrect. She talks about the myth of eating turkey causing sleepiness because of the tryptophan in it. That myth was disproven years ago. Yes, there's tryptophan in turkey - but the amount isn't enough to affect the human body. The REAL reason people fall asleep after Thanksgiving is that they just ingested tons of carbs - potato, yams, stuffing etc. - and after the brief sugar rush, their blood sugar levels crashed. So if you wanted the Thanksgiving effect to get you sleepy, you shouldn't eat turkey - you should load up on carbs and then let yourself crash (assuming you don't have blood sugar issues to start with!!)
Anyway, I really liked the idea behind this, I liked the photography, and I liked some of the advice provided. However, there are WAY too many poses shown and the resulting thickness of the book is far larger than any travel book I own. If she did a second version with half (or less) of the poses, arranged more logically for its purpose, then I would go for the five stars. As it stands right now, it is missing its target mark.』
(My wife is happy) 『I bought this for my wife after it was recommended by a friend and she is very pleased with the book. She now uses it every day with help doing yoga routines as well as assisting with sleep problems. Highly recommended.』
(Very helpful book.) 『I love to travel and having this book by my side is going to make every trip evenmore enjoyable. I am planing take this book on every journey I make.』
(Entertaining, doable, perfect for travel) 『The visual appeal of this book -- its small size, heavyweight paper, and crystal clear photos -- all add to the top-notch instruction and sage advice for yoga either on the road or at home. The book consists of five chapters, focusing on postures, routines, and advice for achieving optimal wellness while on the road. The poses are photographed clearly, and the best part is the modifications recommended for beginners. This is the perfect complement to a beginning yogi or yogini's library, and I certainly intend on taking the book with me when I travel. The recommended routines are simple enough to perform in a hotel room, while the book itself will inspire me to look after my health while traveling. Highly recommended.』
(an excellent addition to your yoga bookshelf) 『...And if you don't have a yoga bookshelf, this would be a good place to start. YOGA TO GO is a well-written, handsomely produced (and very inexpensive!) yoga manual that works well as a general primer for yoga novices, but which also has something new to offer the more experienced: specific advice for how to continue your yoga practice while travelling. That is, how to use yoga to counteract the usual array of discombobulating travel-related irritations (bad food, long hours in cramped seats, time changes, lost sleep, etc.). Carino's book also offers simple and sage advice on some peripheral topics -- such as how to eat well in places where the only options seem to be Burger King and Taco Bell; and how to meditate on a plane while the guy seated next to you drools on your shoulder.
Carino's writing style is fluid and accessible and should appeal equally to those for whom yoga is a spiritual pursuit, and those for whom it is primarily an exercise regimen.
This is Paula Carino's first book. I hope we can look forward to more from her.』 『
Now there’s no excuse! This handy, illustrated guide tucks into purse or pocket and makes it easy to do yoga anywhere.
In a hotel room, on the job, even in the back of a station wagon: with these amazingly smart routines, created by an experienced instructor, it’s possible to do yoga everywhere. Paula Carino has boiled down the thousands of asanas into a basic series of therapeutic postures easy enoughfor total beginners, and they’re all described in detail and shown in dozens of easy-to-follow photographs. The views of each pose include the drishti and reminders of the bandhas. The breath count is included as well and will be helpful to the beginner. Suggestions for modifications are printed near the poses referred to. A brief essay on the philosophy is included as are mini chapters on the different "seasons" of a woman's life (almost no mention is made of menopause, however). The pictures are excellent but the print is very light and very small making it difficult to read. I would suggest having this as a second or third reference and using David Swenson's manual as a primary guide along with an authorized instructor. Another excellent guide is G. Maehle's new book: Ashtanga.Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and PhilosophyAshtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual: An Illustrated Guide to Personal Practice I would have given this 5 stars but it's not as thorough as it could be. Many women practice throughout their lives and the biggest transitions - perimenopause and menopause are barely hinted at.』
(Don't waste your money) 『Don't bother. I purchased this book after reading one of the reviews and was VERY disappointed. Save your money and buy the David Swenson "Practice Manual". My complaints? Almost NO modifications. At the end of the book, there are a couple of pages on pregnancy and menstruation, but you could read this information in Yoga Journal. The ONLY good part of the book is that it has pictures matched with the inhale/exhale. Otherwise, a waste.』
(Finally, a Yoga title book specifically for female practicer) 『I just began to practice Ashtanga yoga and there are so many Yoga related books out there, but none of them, until this one, is specifically for female practicers. It explains in detail what female Ashtanga Yoga practicers need mind during different stage of life - pregnancy, menstrual period, etc, - to adjust practice accordingly.
It's very helpful for female Ashtanga yoga practicers in general. However, there's some minor typo or mis-numbered error here and there in the book, it also doesn't include second series.
I strongly suggest female practicers to get this one as a second reference because in our life, there are times we need make adjustment accordingly.』
