『As good as 'The Joy of Cooking' is for cooks who love to cook; Esther Myer's book 'Yoga and You' is the same for Yoga Teachers. The book may not introduce you to anything specactularly new and different but this book is better written and more concise than most. It's a great reference - nothing is missing. I would definitely find a place for it in your library.』

(Outstanding)
『This is an amazing book. Very practical yet inclusive&descriptive. The pictures are beautiful. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to both beginners&more experienced students of yoga.』

(A must-read for both aspiring and experienced yoga students.)
『Esther Myers, building on her background in Iyengar Yoga, finds a balanced and integrated style through the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli (author of "Awakening the Spine"). This book balances the history and philosophy of yoga with postures, breathing and meditation. She also includes personal anecdotes from her life, including her battle with breast cancer. Esther's approach is down-to-earth and her descriptions of the postures are clear, including drawings or pictures for each. I find myself going back to this book over and over, as a yoga teacher, to take in her simply profound wisdom and insight into yoga. "Yoga and You" is both inspirational and practical and highly recommended to anyone who is either just starting out, or has been practising yoga for years. An incredibly beautiful picture of the author with her cat shows a truly gently natured woman whom you feel you want to get to know as you read her book.』
『Whether you are new to yoga, returning to it, or want to enhance an ongoing practice,Yoga and Youis an invaluable companion on your journey. (Helps balance the body and boost the immune system)
『Kam Thye Chow and Emily Mood's THAI YOGA THERAPY FOR YOUR BODY TYPE: AN AYURVEDIC TRADITION provides a bodywork therapy which guides readers through a series of yoga postures, accompanied by palming and thumbing along the body's energy lines and pressure points. This combined therapy helps balance the body and boost the immune system and is a discipline receiving increased attention in the Western world. Kam Thye Chow is the founder and director of the Lotus Palm School in Montreal and joins with an Ayurvedic educator to fully cover not just the technique, but the accompanying diet and lifestyle tips that should be included.』

(Truly A Wonderful Book)
『For anyone who is familiar with the teachings of Kam Thye Chow and the Lotus Palm School and who believe in the evolution of Thai Yoga Massage as truly one of the best things you can do for both you the massage therapist, and the client you will love this book.

This book opens doors for Thai Yoga Massage to the yoga, ayurveda and general community because it grounds the practice in easy to understand yet deeply penetrating and time honored principles of Asian/Indian medicine. Simply put it inspires and teaches you how to give incredible Thai Yoga Massage and further shows your clients how they can take all the wonderful benefits and incorporate them into their everyday life.

It has made a very noticiable difference in my practice, because it gives me a strong foundation to understand why I choose to use certain postures with certain clients, and why I put some aside. It has helped me to channel my intention and energy in such a way that at the end of the massage my clients will relate to me how they have benefited from the experience, and it almost matches word for word the thoughts in my head for what I was hoping to accomplish with my session.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Thai Massage, and when you combine this with Kam Thye's first book that relates to Thai Massage in a more classical sense, you start to have a more complete picture of the vision that Thai Massage is a complete wellness system.』

(Inaccurate information)
『I would like to take the time to write a little about Mr. Kam Thye Chow's new book entitled, Thai Yoga Therapy for Your Body Type: An Ayurvedic Tradition. In this book, the reader is introduced to "Thai Yoga Therapy" as a form of massage applied using the principles of Ayurveda. Though Mr. Chow attempts to justify his connection between Traditional Thai Massage and Ayurveda by citing that Traditional Thai Medicine has its roots in Ayurveda, he does nothing to prove it. Further more, he speaks very little about Traditional Thai Medicine. Out of 221 pages, only 3 pages make mention of any Traditional Thai medicine theory and/or terminology. For the most part, the entire theoretical discussion of the book is based on the practice of Ayurveda as taught by David Frawley. The terms used are entirely Sanskrit instead of Thai and Pali terms which are used in Traditional Thai Medicine. While it's true that Traditional Thai Medicine has its roots in Indian medicine, one cannot replace Thai medical theory and concepts with modern day Ayurvedic theory. The medicine of India which Thai medicine was influenced by is much different than the Ayurveda practiced today. In addition, Thai medicine has also been influenced by Chinese medicine and pre-existing indigenous practices. It would be more accurate to say that Ayurveda and Traditional Thai Medicine have similar roots or that they are "cousins."

This book is a description of Thai massage with Ayurvedic principles laid over it. It is not a meshing of the two systems and it is definitely not Traditional Thai Medicine. Even the most basic concepts and theories of Traditional Thai Massage have been left out of this book. Furthermore, many of the known theories have been changed so as to fit in with the author's idea to mix Thai Massage with Ayurvedic principles.

I feel that to be honest to himself, his students and to the Thai Massage community it would be more appropriate for this form of therapy to be called something other than "Thai Yoga Therapy." The truth of the matter is, there is very little about it that is Thai.

Please feel free to contact me with any responses or questions.

(Thai Yoga Massage returns to its roots)
『Kam Thye Chow's book demystifies Ayurveda with a clear intro to it's practice of establishing ones constitution. The remainder of the book is well illustrated with a 1 1/2 hour Thai Massage form suited to easily help balance a Thai massage recipients dosha. Great read for those interested in both Ayurveda or Thai Yoga massage.』

(Thai Yoga Therapy for Your Body Type: An Ayurvedic Tradition)
『This is a terrific book and groundbreaking. To my knowledge, it's the first time Ayurveda and Thai Yoga have been connected and revealed to have the same roots. It is both a course in the principles of Ayurveda and a course in Thai yoga massage and it brings them together to create a wonderfully synergistic and flexible therapeutic modality, easily adaptable to various constitutional types. Anyone who learns this system is enriching herself and raising her healing potentiality immensely. As both a student and teacher of Ayurveda and Thai Yoga, I find this book easy to understand and, most importantly from a practioner's point-of- view, highly practical. Thanks, Kam Thye and Emily!』
『A form of Thai Yoga Massage that focuses on the three Ayurvedic body types

• Explains how to determine a person’s Ayurvedic body type and provides hands-on techniques for working with them

• Brings the practices presented in Thai Yoga Massage to a new customized level of therapeutic healing

The traditional healing arts of Ayurveda and Thai Yoga Massage have a deep and integrated relationship that provides an unparalleled modality for restoring body, mind, and spirit. Although it originated in India, over the centuries Ayurveda has been assimilated into the predominant Thai culture and has evolved into a distinctive folk medicine. With the growing popularity of Ayurveda and Thai Yoga Massage, there is a renewed interest in reuniting these practices into a powerful therapeutic alliance.

Thai Yoga Therapy for Your Body Typebridges the practice of Thai Yoga Massage with its ancient Ayurvedic roots to offer a complete and holistic healing modality. The authors first explain in detail the fundamental principles of Ayurveda and then recommend daily practices for each of the three main body types of vata, pitta, and kapha. Practitioners learn how to customize their work with the appropriate massage approach, recommended yoga asanas, breathing techniques, and diet and lifestyle tips. More than 50 illustrated, full-body Thai Yoga Massage postures are presented as well as a massage flow for each body type. The authors indicate the Ayurvedic benefits of each posture and detail any precautions that should be followed in this dynamic practice of transformative healing.

『The system called Tantra has been always regarded as an esoteric and a secret way of spiritual practice, not accessible to the untrained one and to the common folk. The secrecy about the practice seems to consist in the noble outlook of life which the Tantra requires the seeker to entertain, a way of looking at things different from the one in which people are generally accustomed to see, interpret and evaluate things. The teachers of Tantra hold that a seeker on this path has to outgrow the social and even the human outlook and develop a super human and divine outlook in respect of things. Since this would be to expect too much from the common man in the world, Tantra is supposed to be a closed secret whose gates can be opened only with the key provided by a competent Guru.

This book will be of great help to those seeking the insides of Tantra and those who intend to read such classics by Sir John Woodroffe like Serpent Power etc., available on amazon.』

(great book on mind body work)
『this book describes the best of both pilates and yoga. one of my favorite aspects of the book are the highlights of the body that show what is being worked with each move. as a pilates instructor i like that sort of information and feel it is helpful to participants. in the class there really is a place for both pilates and yoga as they both can help deliver optimal results in the quest for heightened mind body connections. this good for your library on the subject regardless of level.』

(An invaluable reference, modern and integrated approach to fitness)
『In a 252 pages of artistic display of photographs and text, the authors strived to present the best of strengthening and flexibility exercise routines of modern times. They integrated yoga and Pilates in well explained historical and technical scenario that combines the Indian contribution by Iyengar and the German, by Pilates.

The following are general observation about the book content and style:

1- The authors do not claim that their book is a substitute for taking classes in yoga or Pilates. The authors displayed modesty and genuine reasoning in almost every aspect of delivering information to their prospective readers.

2- The book clearly states the need for refraining from eating for at least four hours before starting exercise. They even recommend waiting for three hours after taking a snack before engaging in exercise. That shows the real depth of the authors' insight into realistic fitness practice.

3- Each exercise is demonstrated by four to five colored photographs that occupy a separate page for each exercise with legible and well chosen title depicting the purpose of the exercise.

4- The language of the book is simple and accurate, which makes reading enjoyable.

5- The photographs are chosen to show close-up views of relevant parts of the body as well as overall views of poses. It shows the dedication of the authors to facilitating the understanding of alignment of spines and posture during the performing of technically challenging exercises.

6- The book has two sections that describe individual exercises on yoga and Pilates. That is followed by a separate section addressing designing daily routines.

In all, this book is a real addition to the literature on body and mind fitness. It offers practical solutions to the universal health problem of modern times; that is stress and anxiety. The authors have demonstrated the need for patience and consistent training in order to reeducate the body and mind to endure repetition and gain awareness about the bad habits acquired during routine daily activities. The number of authors and participant who contributed to this book has indeed poured their best knowledge and talent in neat and appropriate photographing, book design, and display of information.

(A cute resource)
『I teach yoga to children ages 4 and 5, and I have been searching for some good resources to share yoga with the children.

Babar's Yoga for Elephants is a very sweet concept for a yoga book. For children who know who Babar is, this book is a treat. For those who don't, it could be confusing. The flow of the book is OK, and the landmark-inspired poses are excellent. First, Babar explains the history of how elephants discovered yoga as it was done by ancient elephants through a series of cave drawings. Babar then takes us through a few series of poses, as well as some good stretches. Babar then travels around the world, copying landmarks with yoga poses. The writing is very "stream of consciousness" without a lot of structure, so it's definitely not made to aid instructors in shaping lessons.

I only have 2 small issues with this book. First, there is a lot of information about "how elephants started doing yoga," and while this is amusing for myself as an adult and Babar fan, the children were confused and bored during those sections. Second, the pictures of Babar doing the yoga poses are sort of difficult to understand. I can figure them out and show the children, but when they take the book in their own hands they have difficulty figuring out what Babar is doing in the pictures.

The kids have enjoyed pawing through the book and doing the poses, and I have enjoyed a renewed love for Babar the Elephant. While the book is sweet and a nice addition to a yoga book collection, it is by no means a sigular resource upon which to build lessons.』

(Great choice for budding yoginis)
『What a fun, colorful book! If you are interested in the poster (it is adorable) be sure you purchase the correct format, the book comes in two: a large format 11.5 x 9 inches with the accompanying 22x26 inch poster and a smaller 8.5x 6.5 inch edition without a poster. The reviews on Amazon suggest that the poster accompanies both formats, this is not the case.

My daughter (almost 4) loves this book and asks for it frequently. Several of the poses are far too complicated for the little ones (under 8), but with Babar as our guide we've worked through about half of the poses and had a blast doing so.

The book offers a nice visual breakdown of several basic asanas/poses. It not only introduces kids to yoga, but prompts skill building by teaching kids how to decode sequence and movement through static visual cues. Watching my daughter work through the poses based only on her "reading" of the detailed illustrations is great fun.』

(Lovely Book on Yoga For Children of All Ages!)
『Cute book, which shows various, popular yoga positions and how to do them. Plus demonstrates some great warm up stretches as well!

Babar's Yoga For Elephants comes with a full size poster&the book itself is very well illustrated! It has a very cute story about elephants&yoga that will captivate children's imagination. Have fun and happy reading!!

(Great Book for Teaching Yoga to Children!)
『This is a super cute yoga book for children, starring (and narrated by) Babar the Elephant. It talks about the earliest days of yoga (apparently, yoga was actually invented by elephants, although they looked more like woolly mammoths in the illustration), and then tells of how it was rediscovered and spread once again through the elephant world not long ago. Babar then takes us through his daily practice, and ends with some ideas of yoga to do on vacations at a variety of famous places (including the Golden Gate Bridge).

Today, I used the book to teach the class at my son's school (children ages 4 through 7), and it worked out very nicely. I read the intro, then we did the asana practice (beginning with Sun Salutations, which is how I always start the kids in their practice anyway), and I finished by reading the last section of the book, which was all text. The kids were particularly interested in seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, since we live near enough that it's a familiar landmark to everyone. It was a very nice way to do our practice today, and it is a lovely book for anyone who wants to introduce yoga to young children.

I disagree with the reviewer that said the poses are too difficult for small children - the only pose I didn't have them do was headstand. Also, they didn't find the instructions at all boring, since they were actually doing the poses as I was reading. It worked really well.』

(not for kids)
『The poses are too advanced for younger children. The book cannot be used to read to children, since it is boring reading instructions.』
『Babar's Yoga For Elephants marks the second all-new Babar title in the Abrams series! In this delightful crossover book, Babar takes readers of all ages through the history of elephant yoga, from prehistoric times through the present. In his introduction, Babar explains that yoga is the perfect tool to ease the stress and complications of modern-day elephant life. Then he takes readers through 14 positions explaining, in detail, how each is done. The book concludes with drawings of Babar and Celeste's world tour where they demonstrate the yoga positions alongside similar structures. For instance, two elephants in the "Cobra" position resemble the Golden Gate Bridge! And perhaps Mr. Eiffel came up with the idea for his tower in Paris after seeing two elephants in the "Proud Warrior" pose. Yoga enthusiasts and yoga beginners alike will adore this book for its unique approach and humorous artwork. What could be more comforting than seeing our beloved Babar sharing his message of inner peace? The book includes an easy-pull-out poster showing classic yoga positions as elephants.』

(Honest and Deep Approach To Yoga)
『I just finished reading this book and found it to be very worthwhile! I would almost say it's a must read for serious students of yoga who want to go "beyond the postures".

It approaches yoga practice as a gateway to the internal, as a way of making a deeper connection with oneself and discovering themselves through the practice of yoga. This isn't a book on asana (postures) so if you are looking for that this book is not what you need, rather look into books such as Erich Shiffman's "Yoga The Spirit And Practice Of Moving Into Stillness" , Donna Farhi "Yoga Mind, Body&Spirit: A Return to Wholeness" which are both excellent books on learning Asana as well as the deeper aspects as well.

The author writes with openness about his own experiences, and does not try to come across as all wise and knowing, but rather someone who himself is very much "in process".

I highly recommend this as a book for those who are looking to take their practice of yoga beyond the physical.

Another book I would highly recommend is Stephen Cope's "Yoga and The Quest For The True Self" which also is focused on the internal aspects of yoga. This book actually goes (in my opinion) even deeper than the Phoenix Rising book in terms of covering the psychological aspects in a much more in depth way and it's just a wonderful companion to have to help you deepen your practice.

Also, check out "Bringing Yoga to Life : The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living" by Donna Farhi which is also a book on the internal and life changing practices of yoga.

Still, that is to take nothing away from "Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy" which is definitely a book I would highly recommend to those looking to go further on their path.』

(Reviewed for Yoga Journal by Richard Miller, Ph.D)
『The best course I attended while earning my Ph.D. in psychology was "Theories of Personality." The professor brought the theories to life by describing the lives of each theorist - including people like Freud, Jung, and Maslow. She underscored how all theories grow out of an individual's life experience.

Michael Lee wrote his book on Phoenix Rising yoga Therapy (PRYT) from this perspective. We get to know Michael and his life first. As he describes his own psycho-spiritual journey, we tangibly feel how his approach to training teachers grew organically out of her personal life experiences. And as Michael tell his story, I see that he is also telling my story. It is not just about his journey in life and Yoga, it is also about my journey. This is also the story of how the PRYT training came to be, and thus if you are thinking of taking this training or are interest in following the story of a well-known Western yogi, I can recommend this unpretentious book.

I like that Michael acknowledges early on that each one of us is unique. We each follow a singular path to freedom, and we hold within ourselves the answers that guide us on our path. In turn, true teachers don't tell us what to do. They support us as we discover our own understanding. They help us accept ourselves as we are, so that we may listen deeply and uncover our own voice and song. Phoenix Rising, as envisioned by Michael, supports these views. It supports the therapist as guide, not as "one-who-knows-all."

Michael constantly reminds us that we need to keep out of our own way and the way of the student. Our mind is quick to give advice, but this instills an attitude that the therapist knows what is best for the client. Michael advises us to keep quiet and allow the client to come to his or her own knowing. While simple, this is perhaps the single most powerful message in the book - the attitude of listening, staying out of the way, witnessing, and being inwardly still, while at the same time being an actively engaged loving presence.

In Michael's words, "The more invisible and unobtrusive I am, the more clients feel they have permission to surrender to their body's innate wisdom. The process [of PRYT] unfolds naturally, guided by their inner being as I simply provide a space of acceptance and love, affirming all aspects of each person as the work of the Divine within."

At its core, PRYT is a practice that promotes transformation by drawing on the unique wisdom of the body. And as Michael affirms, "For empowerment and transformation to occur, the process must honor the spirit and stay out of its way. When this happens, Yoga is therapy."

Michael once told me that he was not trying to create a be-all-end-all training for Yoga teachers and therapists. He was interested in concentrating on a particular psycho-spiritual approach utilizing body and breath to enable students to get in touch with their core beliefs and emotions. Through PRYT he wanted to dig one well deeply, in one place. I'd say; he's struck a clear spring for refreshing water.

(Richard Miller, Ph.D.)』

It's a good book for people who have never done yoga or would like to try yoga stretches for warm ups - cool downs during exercise. But I didn't find it helpful for what I thought its purpose was - how to combine yoga and walking. I thought possibly there would be more about how to hold yourself while walking, breathing while walking, positions to do with your arms and legs while you are walking. Possibly I should read this again.... hmmm』

(I wanted to like it but could not.)
『I had trouble with this book because it is poorly written. I love both hatha yoga and walking so I hoped that this book would have something to offer.

You might like it if you are not picky about good writing and you enjoy inspirational life stories.』

(Take a Moment for Yourself)
『From the moment I picked up the book Yoga and Walking, I said to myself "I can do this!" As a women with a loving partner, four children, a full time job and all that goes with them, I have little time for myself. I have been searching for a way to incorporate fitness into my life for years. How could I do this between baseball games, homework and karate lessons, etc.? I have never tried yoga, let alone take the time to go for a walk. In order to tend to all of the details that I need to attend to, I sacrifice my time. When I began reading Yoga and Walking, I immediately felt the love and peace throughout the text. The loving guidance from the Sarleys, as they took the time to describe yoga, its postures and breath work in detail, is evident within each page. I journeyed with them on their walks, I breathed with them. Then I realized, I was reading a book about yoga, without feeling that it was completely foreign. I never felt that this was out of my league, or that I should already know all of the "yoga language". I found that this book had a human quality to it unlike any other; a sense of peace and tranquility. With the words from the Sarley's, "tell yourself that you only have to walk for five minutes", I began on my path to peace and serenity. Now I take a moment for myself. I have a sense of how to bring balance to my busy lifestyle. I take a few moments to breathe and I go for a yoga-walk. It clears my mind and gives me balance. This book is a gentle reminder that we all need to take a moment for ourselves in this busy world. This is not a "how to" book, but a book that brings forth a relaxed, unconditional path to personal, spiritual and emotional growth, one step at a time.』

(Taking Yoga Off the Mat)
『This book is an excellent guide if you are ready to take your yoga off the mat, both physically and psychologically. It outlines practical and realistic directions for doing this with clearly written descriptions of poses and stretches and well defined and reasonable plans and programs. It also offers inspiring insights into the deeper (nonphysical) benefits to be found in pursuing walking yoga as a path for growth. Thank you to the authors for illuminating a new trail on my life journey.』

(Inspiration!)
『I have had the priviledge of attending multiple retreats with Ila and Dinabandhu Sarley, the authors of Walking Yoga. In class they are not only inspirational because of their extensive knowledge of yoga postures, and how to impart this knowledge, but also because of their blissful presence and desire for everyone to love yoga and walking as much as they do. As an amputee, I feel honored to have found teachers who know how to accommodate and teach all people to fully experience Yoga, with whatever challenges they face whether it is a broken arm, a bad back or, myself, who wears two prosthetic legs.

This book, Walking Yoga, is an extension of their teachings, allowing everyone to receive the great value of the Sarley's wisdom right now. The book is a joy to read, blending in specifics on postures and benefits of walking and breathing with personal stories, and real, practical methods everyone can do to maintain the practice of yoga and walking in your life. Yoga, as the Sarley's teach, is not simply postures. Yoga is living a life of beauty, balance and joy. This book outlines creative ways to get started and maintain the practice of Yoga and walking - and carry these benefits with you - in each and every moment.』

Improve your health, vitality, relationships, and self-awareness with this stimulating new exercise program

For centuries, Westerners and Easterners alike have embraced the discipline of yoga as a way to physical health and spiritual fulfillment. More recently, fitness experts everywhere have recognized walking as one of the most beneficial (and least injurious) aerobic exercises. Now Ila and Garrett Sarley teach you how to combine both activities for a routine that will rejuvenate your spirit and calm your mind, while improving your cardiovascular system.

You'll learn the basics of yoga -- the principles, postures, and breathing techniques -- and how to apply them to dynamic walking routines -- transforming a simple, natural activity into a centering, strengthening, and integrating experience. You'll also be taught:

• The five types of walking yoga
• Hatha yoga -- to stretch and strengthen the body
• Mantras (chants) to center and calm the spirit
• Chakra visualization to strengthen your body's seven centers of power
• An approach to exercise that will ensure lifelong regular practice

Filled with tips, techniques, and illustrative examples taken from the authors' own lives,Walking Yogawill show you how to live in the moment -- and how to get the most out of each moment you live.』
『Yoga and walking are two of the most popular fitness activities, andWalking Yogacombines them. Much of the book focuses on the principles of yoga, descriptions of poses to practice on the mat (not on the trail), and anecdotes about people whose lives have been enriched by walking yoga. About 44 pages (out of 197) describe walking routines that incorporate yoga. The routines start with a yoga warm-up (postures and breathing), and then move on to walking with awareness, rhythm, and integrated breathing. The five routines are as follows: full-on walking (aerobic), walking alone (thinking and sorting out), walking with loved ones (intimacy and connection), contemplative walking (slow, relaxed, inward-focused), and walking with gratitude (sensing and appreciating nature). Each is described in detail.

"The synthesis of walking and yoga happens in the moment when you are fully present: when you walk in time with the rhythm of the breath and your sensory awareness is so acute that you actually tingle with the electricity of life," write authors Ila and Garrett Sarley of the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. The book includes a variety of clearly described and illustrated poses that you'll need to practice, with special instructions for beginners.--Joan Price
