『I checked this book out at the library a few months ago. It worked. I felt stress melt away as I progressed week to week. When I returned it to the library I tried other yoga books, but I haven't felt the same since. I NEED this book and I plan to buy it very soon. It's on my wish list right now..... I bought it and it is a life saver.』

『I bought this book about 9 months ago, and then skimmed through it, and tried one or two exercises, and put it away. It didn't look enough like the yoga I was used to doing so I dismissed it. A few weeks ago, I started going through the 12 week program as outlined in the book, and I can't believe how wonderful it makes me feel! The first two weeks consist primarily of neck, shoulder, and upper back stretches which really relieves any tension stored there. The next two weeks adds in stretches for the lumbar region and legs, and then some more familiar poses, like shoulderstand, cobra, bow, and sun salutations are added through the rest of the program. It also includes breathing exercises and meditations, as well as recommendations for specific stress-related ailments. There are clear instructions and illustrations throughout.

I'm so glad I finally decided to give this book a try!!』

(A nice survey of the medical benefits of Asana)
『Summary, helpful addition to the library of someone with a little experience, but not recommended for true beginners.

Details:

This book provides two pre-sequenced yoga series and a large number of "case studies" regarding some way that yoga has helped various medical issues. In many cases, it also suggests several asana that may assist in those medical issues. The goal is to show people how yoga can impact the overall health, rather than just being a tool for flexibility.

I found this approach useful given a reasonable background in yoga, but do not recommend it for a beginner. For someone with background in the Asana, it can help to provide a broader view of the potential benefits of each asana. I have found this useful for adjusting my home practice, particularly to make adjustments around current flucations in my health (for example, if my asthma is flaring up). While you may get some of this information in a group class, my experience is that it tends to come in a haphazard manner (e.g. "your ashtma is bad today? Well, the forward bends should help."). This book allows me to build a more comprehensive and systematic understanding. Also, it frequently states that its arguements are from medical studies, which makes me feel a little better than when the comment is based on something my teacher heard from another guy who once had a similar problem sort of approach. It would have been nice to have references to the studies, but at least I feel like there is some basis here.
As far as not recommending the book for beginners - I don't think the description of the asana are complete enough to really help get you there with the form. Also, there is generally only one picture of each asana, so you are limited to seeing it fully applied and from only one angle. This is helpful if you have already learned it from another source (for example, some of the names where different but once I saw the picture I was on board). But it really want get you there if you are not already familiar with the pose. Also, I believe you are better off having some idea of sequencing prior to starting with the book. That will make sure that you are well balanced in choosing your routine.』

『I was introduced to Sivananda Yoga in May 06 by my Shiatsu masseuse. I had several sessions of Shiatsu for back pain relief. However, a few days after the session the pain returned. My masseuse told me that if I practiced Sivananda Yoga once a day it would significantly reduce my back pain. She covered the basic asanas with me in two sessions. I ordered "The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." and "Yoga 101 Essential Tips". I began performing the asanas on my own using both books as my guide. They are easy to read and fully explain the asanas.

"The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." is more detailed. It gives a great (but brief) history of Yoga along with breathing, meditation, diet info. and health benefits (in detail using photos). My favorite part of this book is the chart for 30m or 90m sessions and also additional asanas as my routine advances. I use this book when I have more time to experiment with new asanas or as a reference.

"Yoga 101 Essential Tips" covers every basic asana and briefly touchs on diet, meditation, etc. I use this book daily because it covers a complete session.

I am a newby at yoga and highly recommend both books. As a result of doing yoga from them for approximately 3-4 weeks my body feels great, my back pain is relieved and I have either toned or lost inches around the abdomen and thighs which has always been difficult for me. My sugar cravings have decreased (once a daily user of Coca Cola and Haribo Gummies) and coffee is not desired. I am also working on a better diet from recommendations in the book.

101 TIPS is a great pocket reference and good for people who travel and want to take a reference along for their daily practice, while YMB contains much more detail and variations on poses.

Both present the Sivananda Yoga practice, with information on the other "5 Points of Yoga," as presented by Swami Vishnu-Devananda, author of the excellent COMPLETE ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF YOGA. His 5 Points: exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet and meditation/concentration.

If followed closely, the system presented is stunningly effective and will have you recharged and rejuvenated in no time. Highly recommended.』

(Explaining Better Crucial Elements of World Religions Via Ancient Egyptian Mysticism)
『I read the "1997-2005" edition of "Egyptian Yoga Volume II: The Supreme Wisdom of Enlightenment and the Mysteries of Amun Religion" aka "Egyptian Yoga Volume II: Mysteries of Amun and the Supreme Wisdom of Enlightenment". The 1997 original, "Hymns of Amun", had been revised with an additional two new sections in 1998. This book may double as Volume 2 of the "African Religion" series on Egyptian based city theologies. At least I am not able to confirm the existence of another African Religion Vol. 2, in which place Egyptian Yoga Volume II gets usually listed. This would make sense, as this book focuses on the theology of the city of Thebes (aka Waset/Diospolis/No/No-Amon/Anu/Hektaptah): The major focus is on largely extensive commentaries on the Amun hymn verses of this city. The number of pages approximates Egyptian Yoga Vol. 1:: The Philosophy of Enlightenment, yet with a bigger font size, leaving the content at about half of that of Volume I. The second Volume (if it was originally planned as such) shows the spiritual development of the author. Which is not the reason, why I give Vol. 2 one more star than Vol. 1, but because the subtractions are not intense enough/are not occupying that much space for this great mystical book.

Volume II elaborates on some issues of Volume I, smoothes away the occasional more extreme view of the first Volume and takes more care of the do-it-yourself layout. (The favorite slips this time being headlines and captions not on the respective pages and name rendering variations in brackets accidentally largely being the very same ones than in front of the brackets.)

The derivation of Indian religion from the common Egyptian source gets more elaborated on. The reasoning on the mysticism of the Adam&Eve mythology gets explained in a most revealing matter (even though not complete), the trinity concept gets explained well via its much more coherent Egyptian source and the origin of the word "Amen" gets explained via the same way. All of this and other revelations make the book worthy to read alone. No less revealing the SYMBOLIC skin color of Aset/Isis being black, not necessarily her real one (which is rather an incidental doubling, then), the same way as the NON-Black skin colors of ancient Egyptian paintings are symbolic. Which sure is bound to be "controversial" among African-centered egyptologists.

Not everything has to get agreed upon 100%. For example that ALL animals are not aware of the self/individual has been disproven by now and that there is a clear-cut hierarchy in the complexity of the nervous system from plant to animal to human may be considered as specicist, too. That I-n-I (our) vision of self is responsible for many ailments we develop is true, but ALL of them, even infectious endemics such as Aids, is probably a little off... Also, to put the blame of e.g. child abuse on the survivors, caused by their actions in a previous life, is sure not for the sensibilities of everyone. In Buddhist countries to this day, many people suffer, because their religiously enlightened claim, every malady such as blindness is supposedly the result of karma, i.e. one's own fault.

I was also disappointed that the author shied away from elaborating on an important ritual for supposedly not being fit to be exposed in a book. Instead, I suspect, this has more to do with that the issue was too controversial in our Imes (and the author), as it is about a ritual symbolizing "the sexual union with the ["androgynous"] Divinity him/herself."

I recommend this book, though I have to admit that I dread forward reading a handful of other books by Muata Ashby on my table, simply for their repetitive character...』

『The CD is best for extending the lessons from the Main Lesson Book or Card Deck. My three year old seems to imagine she's right there with Angel Bear and Sweet Pea, and she's very creative in answering questions about the stories.

Although the Angel Bear Yoga program does not use traditional names for poses et cetera, it's theme of positive character traits really has young children interested. My daughter LOVES it, and she talks about all of the traits and poses she learns with everyone in the family. She likes to "define" them as well. I think it empowers her as well as fostering creativity, relaxation, and appreciation of nature.』

I think this CD has some great visualization exercises, but they're probably better for 6 year olds and up, unless you're a preschool teacher who is familiar with all the Angel Bear resources. I bought this for use at home with my three year old and her attention span isn't mature enough for this, and neither is her vocabulary advanced enough to understand words like "abundance," "compassion," "integrity," etc.』

『This is a great book!Why,you ask,is it out of print?This book reflects a time when Yoga was beginning to be widely accepted in the west from the east and so there is a slight cultural exotica flavour, which, while charming, is dated.
The book is by a doctor however, and takes a clinical western approach to total health:as such I find it to be a current asset to both my medical library section and my psychology section.I can't say that for many books in my library for 30 years. Many exercises are easy and invigoating at a deep level; a few of the exercises outlined here are for master level training,they take a lot of discipline to get through the first few times and a coach would be good to have,thats how I felt.Having said that,the breathing exercise set generally and the chapter on relaxation specifically is worth the price of the book.Tons of used copies everywhere.ENJOY』
