IPhone 3G used's review (Better pregnancy yoga books) 『I picked a copy of this book up and have to mostly say it's quite dated. Luckily I got it from the library. The photos thankfully have real pregnant women, but they are wearing 70's style leotards and other equally aged images. Also there are a lot drawings of women giving birth with big smiles on their faces, and though birth is joyful experience, I highly doubt even with positivity you'll be grinning. Some of the positives though are the importance of breath, the explanation of yoga and other pregnancy information in the first half of the book. It has a very reputable feel and some good information, but I think there are better guides with more updated information, I'm fond of Yoga for pregnancy, birth and beyond.』
(Excellent book for pregnant mothers) 『I was recommended this book by my yoga teacher, an Indian woman from Rajastan, who has devoted her whole life to yoga. It is truly a great book. It has clear explanations of all processes that happen in woman's body in pregnancy, helps you understand your body and mind during pregnancy and helps you fix the basic troubles you might have in pregnancy, like bad posture, week pelvic muscles or backpain with simple tips. Being in the second half of my pregnancy, I used the advice from this book on daily bases and have no backpain or other troubles so far. In addition I think yoga makes you be more "with" yourself, so you can feel and be calm about your changes, and I think you can connect to your baby much better. I am pregnant for the first time, but felt the first movements of my baby already since week 15. Try it yourself!』
(any question about pregnancy? here is the answer) 『I am reviewing this book for my website - www.soloyoga.com - as it is a book I recommend for the yoga teacher training I conduct in Milano Italy. As yoga teachers we have also pregnant women in normal classes and have to take care of their condition with the do and do nots. The anatomical illustrations are very clear and what is especially helpful is how the author stresses the role of the partner, who is also active in the whole process. excellent the suggestions for labour and what happens after, I have given this book to more than one pregnant student and of course my own daughter mother of 3!』 『The exercises illustrated in this book help relieve pain, discomfort and tension at all the states of pregnancy including childbirth itself.』

Each posture works the sen energy system of Thai medicine, and the postures here are solutions to many common ailments of the back, knees, hips and neck. The exercises promote weight loss and circulation improvement too; any New Age collection strong in yoga techniques will want this photo-packed visual introduction.』 『A complete guide to the ancient technique of Ruesri Dat Ton, also known as Thai yoga
• Presents 60 step-by-step, illustrated exercises for self-healing and balanced well-being
• Reveals the practice and evolution of Thai yoga, said to have originated with Buddha’s physician, Jivaka Kumarabhaccha
• Explains how the postures allow individuals to rebalance the flow of energy in the body
Traditional Thai yoga--or Ruesri Dat Ton--is an individual yoga practice rooted in the ancient Ayurvedic tradition. It is comprised of exercises that--like the partnered practice of traditional Thai massage--originated with Buddha’s own physician, Jivaka Kumarabhaccha. Enrico Corsi and Elena Fanfani present, for the first time in English, 60 of these postures fully illustrated with step-by-step instructions designed to stimulate self-healing by rebalancing the flow of energy in the body.
Each of the postures works within thesenenergy system that underlies Thai medicine. Fundamental to the practice is retention of the breath once the body has assumed the desired posture. The practitioner concentrates the breath on the place where the body is storing tension or dysfunction. When the breath is exhaled the body also expels the negative energy, allowing restorative energy to take its place.
The simple yet highly effective postures inTraditional Thai Yogaaddress many common ailments--including physical ailments of the back, knees, shoulders, hips, arms, feet, and neck and more generalized ailments such as nausea and shortness of breath--as well as offering exercises that promote weight loss, longevity, and overall balanced well-being. 』

I teach yoga and stress management at the college level and I use this book in both classes multiple times during the semester. The author Julie Lusk takes concepts that we as teachers study for years to understand (like the subtle anatomy or differing forms of meditation) and she explains them in a clear, concise and logical manner without oversimplifiying them, but making the ideas accessable to teachers and students alike. She has invited other respected experts in mind-body techniques to contribute to the many guided exercises offered and the book also serves as a great resource guide.』

The variety here is nice - everything from breathing meditations to chakra meditations. You don't have to be a yoga student to utilize these as they are appropriate for anyone. IPhone 3G used's review (Beautiful, informative book) 『My yoga teacher was being certified and she recommended this book to me. The pictures are beautiful and easy to follow. I think this is a great book for beginners!』
(Good for starting out) 『I've been attending yoga classes for about a month. I've recently started a daily practice with the help of this book. I Borrowed flows from my class and clarifed any unsure pose with the help of the pictures in this book. It has also allowed me to put names with poses, so I can ask for assistance from my teacher. I checked this one out of the library, but am probably going to buy it. I would consider it good for someone who knows little or nothing about yoga or wants to make adjustments to their practice.』
(Teach Yourself Visually--Yoga) 『I'm very happy with the format of this book. Since I am new to yoga I found the various positions were clearly explained and the pictures helped tremendously. I took this book to my Yoga class. My teacher was so impressed she asked for the name of the book so she could add it to her collection.』
(Outstanding) 『This book is excellent! The pictures clearly show each pose and the narrative includes modifications and problem areas. I highly recommend it to both beginners and teachers. I took it to class and my teacher was anxious to get her own copy.』
(Beautiful, informative book) 『I have bought a few books on yoga, and this one is by far the best. Not only is the book beautiful to look at, the instructions are clear, concise and very informative. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Alright book) 『I really didn't like or dislike this book. It has some pretty good information. It's not just one of those books that JUMPS OUT at me with lots of new information.』
(Never Written a Review Before But I Owe One to this Book) 『My brother gave me this book back in 1979. I was in my early twenties and had a bad back. I began doing these exercises and after a few weeks my back ache was gone. I also noticed numerous other benefits. I've always kept a copy of the book nearby since, but I also explored other books. This one was FAR SUPERIOR to every other book I've read. Why? There are fewer than a dozen simple poses, there is an order in which to perform them, each pose is explored thoroughly. The author also illustrates the mistakes you might make while attempting them. He gives a full description of the health benefits.
I have taken classes and I've read numerous books. Nothing compares to this one. Recently, my bad back returned after vanishing for almost thirty years. I had stopped doing yoga for several years. I got the book out, reread it, even though I've read it a dozen times, and began performing the asanas. Magic. Bad back gone, mild insomnia which I've also suffered from gone. I've never gotten a common cold while doing these yoga exercises...
I just spent fifteen minutes writing this. I do not know anyone associated with the book or the author. It's just something that's been a gift in my life and I felt it important to give a bit back to it.』
(An essential book for beginning yoga at home) 『I feel lucky that i found this book, when i started practicing yoga, as it helps you to learn yoga postures (asanas) step by step. You do not need a yoga instructor if you buy this book, for you may really start practicing at home without injuring yourself - especially the step-by-step teaching of Shirshasana (head stand) is very good. It also gives how to practice Uddhiyana Bandha / a special Bandha technique with a unique and easy-to-do method.
However, this book is plainly about hatha yoga - the physical practices on yoga, so the ones who are interested more on philosophy has to move on other books.』
(Barring a minor flaw, the book is fine.) 『This is a good book with elaborate explanations and meticulous descriptions on each Yoga posture (Asana). Yet, what is of paramount importance in Yoga is the correctness in doing the Asanas.
I found a flaw when reading the text on Bhujanga Asana (the Cobra pose). When ascending with face and neck upwards, you have to take a deep breath and hold it for a second or two at the full ascending stage and then return slowly, exhaling slowly in the process, simultaneously relaxing your calf and leg muscles.
Deep breathing is very important while doing the Cobra pose, but this was not mentioned at all. The rest of the book is fine.
』
(An excellent self-contained introduction to yoga) 『If you're looking for a book on yoga that will plant you firmly at the feet of a guru and introduce you to all the Hindu theosophical accretions that have built up around the asanas over the last two or three millennia, start with Iyengar's _Light on Yoga_. This book isn't it.
But if you're interested in yoga as a form of physical exercise that will help you to inhabit your body (and this planet) comfortably and perhaps occasionally even with a modicum of grace, and you want a no-nonsense book that will show you how to do it without requiring you to do obeisance to a guru full of Profound Insights, look no further. This book _is_ it.
The latter paragraph describes me. In traditional Hindu terms, I'm most definitely a jnana kind of guy (and a pretty iconoclastic one at that). Intellectually, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's _An Idealist View of Life_ comes close to capturing my philosophical outlook (which in my case owes as much to Royce and Bradley as to Shankara). I can muster up some reverence when it's absolutely necessary, but in general I'm about as inclined toward bhakti as your cat.
And I certainly don't have much patience for the sort of stuff Frank Zappa memorably described as "Cosmik Debris"; the little reverence I _do_ have, I reserve exclusively for the Absolute, not for His/Her/Its self-appointed earthly representatives.
Nevertheless, for the reasons to which I briefly alluded above, I've been practicing yoga, at least on and off, for something over twenty years. And I like this book.
Now, I'm not knocking gurus; if you want one, go get one. (Just please, for your own sake, check them out carefully and stick to the real ones, like Sri Ramana Maharshi. And Iyengar's books are very good if you want that sort of thing.) I'm just saying that if you're like me, this is the yoga book you want. It sets out the asanas in anatomical detail, with photos of not only the right way but also several common _wrong_ ways of doing them. The descriptions are very good and very clear. And if you don't think you can do the "hard" ones right away, don't worry; simpler variants are included.
This is not, in short, a yoga book that will make you feel like a spiritual quitter or a fraud or something if you're just doing it for exercise. You can do as much or as little as you want, and this book will be right there to help you. (There's helpful information on diet and such too, but here again, you can take the parts you can use and leave the rest.)
Andre van Lysebeth wasn't looking for devoted chelas when he wrote this helpful guide. It was first published in the 1970s and it's stood the test of the intervening decades. I'm delighted to find that it's back in print so that I can get a replacement copy.』 『If you cannot attend yoga classes, want to supplement what you learn in classes, or simply prefer to teach yourself at home, then this is the book for you! The essence of yoga is in the details, and this book covers them all -- not just each of the postures, but their variants, their duration, and the correct method of breathing as well. Van Lysebeth, with over 50 years experience as a yoga instructor, describes more than 200 exercises and postures, using over 100 photographs and numerous illustrations that show both the right way and the wrong way to perform them. Unlike other yoga books which show only completed postures, these illustrations show the intermediate steps for attaining the final postures. Van Lysebeth describes yoga breathing in detail, and explains the benefits and effects of each exercise. As a complete instruction in the practice of yoga, he also covers the mental and spiritual aspects, and discusses the basic principles of a healthy diet. For beginning students, this classic book is a perfect introduction to yoga; for more advanced students, it will prove a valuable resource.』

The cards offer a visual reference and the stick figure drawings give the basics of each position. What a clever idea. I just love the incense that came with it too. My two little ones (3 and 5) have even joined in to do the yoga with me. Great starter kit!』
(My favorite yoga workout) 『This may be my favorite yoga workout ever. Because it's a cd, and not a dvd, it may take some getting used to, especially for a total beginner. But it comes with a set of cards which show you the correct poses. What I like the best about it is that the cd lets you pick and choose the various sequences to create your own workout. You can just go through the entire workout, or you can pick from various workouts they suggest, or you can create your own. I like the instructor very much for the most part (she makes one comment about a "spinster aunt" which I find very offensive), and I find the level of difficulty perfect--not too hard, not too easy. Plus, since I can basically create the workout I want, I can modify it to be as difficult or as easy as I want it to be.』
(The Sound Of Strength) 『I really enjoyed using Cyndi Lee's Yoga practice!! The only draw back is I'm hearing impiared. So at first I sometimes did not hear Cyndi's voice as it dipped low, so I was unable to hear her voice. I also have Shiva Rea's Yoga Sanctuary, and am looking for other Audio CD's to alternate my practice.』
(Great Introduction to Yoga) 『Having never participated in yoga before, this box contains everything I need to get started. I find myself getting further and further into yoga every day. I bought a yoga video years ago, but had a hard time following it. The C.D. and flash cards make the whole experience much more positive. Cyndi Lee has a calming and easy to follow voice on the C.D. Her cards are illustrated so that I can easily visualize the poses. If you are thinking about trying yoga for the first time, this is the way to go!』
(Serenity in a Box) 『"Yoga is a practice of awakening and connecting with all that is." ~Cyndi Lee
I can think of very few gifts that will actually change a person's life and this is one of them. Yoga can actually change your life. Yoga is so much more than a duplication of poses. While other exercise routines can make you feel a bit like a robot, yoga opens your inner world and as you complete the poses, you actually grow and change and become a person who is more aware of the world and yet the world influences you less. You start to connect with the deepest levels of your inner self and as you continue practicing yoga, you start to feel very good about the poses you have mastered. In this way, you also start to boost your self-esteem, all while being very aware of how you affect everyone in your world.
Cyndi Lee has a unique and very effective method of introducing you to yoga. She has a fun almost playful approach and I laughed out loud a number of times because of her witty humor. She is the director of the OM yoga center where she teaches hatha yoga. She has been teaching yoga for over 20 years, but her pictures look like she is ageless. Her beauty represents the deeply calming benefits of yoga. Her work has been featured in Shape, New York Magazine, Yoga Journal, Elle, Forbes, Newsweek and Self. She writes a regular column and lives in New York City. She travels to lead workshops and retreats in places like London, France, Italy and the Virgin Islands.
I wish I had found these boxed sets a long time ago. Each box contains everything you need for yoga practice besides a blanket and a yoga mat. I'd also like to recommend a soft blanket or comforter, a pillow and yoga blocks if you are just starting your practice. You can use the yoga blocks for some of the poses like triangle pose.
This box contains 2 Compact Discs, flash cards, a yoga belt (nice feature!), a candle, incense and an incense holder. The 2 Discs are in a durable little book with additional information.
The first CD is a 70 minute instructional CD that guides you through:
Warm Up Sun Salutations Standing Poses Seated Poses Backbending Finishing Poses Relaxation
When you open the box it is like an exotic experience. The Bodhi Sattva incense has permeated the entire box and everything has the scent of "celestial sandalwood."
Once you start the CD you soon realize that there is a method here. I had enough time to quickly place the cards out in order so I could see all the poses. This is very effective and unlike most yoga workouts on video, you can actually see the poses while you are doing them. A lot of yoga poses have you looking straight down at the ground, so it is great if you have cards placed out where you can see them.
Each flash card has information on both sides. When viewing all the cards from the top, it is easy to see the different colors of cards and separate the cards into sections. What I loved most about the cards is the names of the poses and the additional information on each card.
During the workout, you will learn the basic poses first and then put them into practice in the Sun Salutation section. On a "standing poses - sun salute card" you will find information on the "swan dive forward" with drawings and information on how this pose stretches the hamstrings and strengthens the legs and back. On the other side of the card, you will see Cyndi Lee illustrating the pose and see the words: Surya Namaskar. I found that these cards added a new depth to the yoga positions and loved learning all the added information most yoga workout videos don't ever discuss. This is a very authentic yoga workout.
The second CD is an amazing musical experience. This is music for when you want to experience the benefits of Yoga on your own without instruction.
OM Yoga is a well-organized system that provides a quiet sanctuary where you can regain physical strength and mental clarity. There is a emphasis on the breath and you can create your own practice sessions with the cards and CD.
There are 5 Suggested Practice Sessions:
OM Yoga Basic Level Short Practice 1-3 (Three variations for added variety. Choose 35, 45 or 50 minutes.) Very Short Practice - You can warm up and then relax
If you are already practicing yoga, you might want to buy this for yourself and some for gifts. This is truly serenity in a box! Also look for: OM Yoga Flash Cards: A 68-Card Deck with 32-Page Booklet. I really think you might enjoy both because I loved reading through the little booklet and seeing how the cards are used in each section. If there is a more perfect workout system, I haven't found it. This is just a beautiful healing gift for the body and soul.
